Coun. Tony Luck to be his successor. In recent weeks, a number of prominent Liberals including John Les and Kevin Falcon announced they will not run next year. Hawes said his decision should not be interpreted as a lack of confidence in the

Thanksgiving food drive

Grocery bags on doorsteps this week Hundreds of people require assistance from the Abbotsford Food Bank and St. Joseph’s Food Bank of Mission on a weekly basis, and meeting the demand requires a continuing stream of contributions from the public. The BC Thanksgiving Food Drive (BCTFD) is a province-wide initiative organized to stock local food banks with essential items. “We had phenomenal success across the province last year. In total, we were able to collect some 250,000 pounds of food. And we’ve set our sights even higher this year by expanding our collection routes and reaching out to additional community partners,” said Andrew Rolfson, BCTFD executive director.

Local volunteers will deliver donation bags to homes in Abbotsford and Mission this week. Those who receive a bag and wish to donate can simply fill it with non-perishable food items and leave it on their front step before 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15. The bags will be picked up that day and delivered to a local donation centre. “We anticipate having more than 6,000 volunteers throughout the province this year,” said Rolfson. “We know many people wish to help, whether by volunteering or donating food. We welcome all who wish to participate, and hope we’ll be able to surpass last year’s results.” The Abbotsford Food Bank and St.

Joseph’s Food Bank of Mission are heavily reliant on the support of local residents. While almost all non-perishable food items are accepted, there is always a need for powdered milk; Boost or Ensure; canned meat, fruit or vegetables; rice; flour; sugar and oats; large size diapers; cereals; peanut butter and/or jellies and jam; regular and chunky soup; and pastas and sauce. Phoney ‘Sally Ann’ canvasser Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

The Salvation Army in Abbotsford has received two complaints that a woman is going door-to-door selling small items to raise money for the organization. But spokesperson Deb Lowell said the agency has never heard of such a campaign and is concerned the woman might be collecting funds for herself. Lowell said two unrelated callers reported that last Thursday (Sept. 6), a woman knocked on their doors on Capri Court in Abbotsford, and was selling items such as fridge magnets and clips for potato chip bags. The woman suggested a donation of $7 to $10 on behalf of the Salvation Army. She was described as a slight, blonde woman in her 50s with her hair pulled back in a ponytail. Lowell said the Sally Ann has received reports of

this nature a couple times each year over the last three years. In none of these situations has an individual come forward to turn over funds raised through such

a venture, she said. Lowell said the Salvation Army has not conducted any door-to-door campaigns in the community for about 10 years.

Hoping for a better year

Students and teachers are back in the classroom, and hopefully this will be a better year in the public school system than 2011-12. One of the most disappointing things about the past school year was a work-to-rule campaign by teachers, who were upset that they were getting nowhere in negotiations with the provincial government over a new contract. While their frustration was understandable, the length of the job action and the effect on students and families was disturbing. Many youngsters saw their team sports nixed, and drama, theatre and other events cancelled. Parents had to make an extra effort to monitor their children’s academic process, because report cards were not issued. Thankfully, the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the provincial education bargaining author-

ity reached an agreement over the summer months, and it appears there will be no job action this year. The BCTF is still angry with the government and will be working toward its defeat, as is its right, but there is a contract in place. Whether a new government, should one be elected, will come up with a more favourable deal for teachers remains to be seen. There should be report cards and proper consultation with parents this school year, and that is to the benefit of everyone — teachers, students and parents. Education has never been as important as it is today. The ability of young people to live independent lives as adults is directly related to a good education, and the school system is a key part of that. Rediscovering the ‘warmth’ of a village Mark

Other Hand It’s seems odd that, despite driving past something virtually every day, you never really notice it. Such is the case with “downtown, old town” Abbotsford. There is not a day I don’t drive through, yet rarely do I stop, other than occasionally at the Royal Bank on South Fraser Way or now and then at Hub Sports to score a new fishing lure that doesn’t lure a fish. Long gone are the days when Gosling’s used to be the ultimate department emporium; Marshall Wells the local hardware store; and Little Mountain Dairy “the” coffee shop on Montrose. Also consigned to the history of Essendene Avenue is Gilmours, Ken Adrian’s super market and crossstreet rival Walker’s Grocery Store. I remember too, in a time before the

malls, the days when most Christmas shopping was done along the three or four blocks of the village, carols playing from the storefronts and windows decorated. I still wear now and then a heavy leather belt with a big brass buckle bought at Viola’s Boutique back in the early ’70s. So it was with some measure of appreciation that I walked a block of Montrose on Saturday, enjoying what appears to be a resurgence of the village atmosphere emanating from the rebuilt or renovated “heritage-style” shops. To those who operate businesses in the old village, please accept my apologies for ignoring you for so long, and for neglecting to recognize what a great job developers and the business owners have done to revitalize and return a sense of hominess to our city. Certainly over the years I have noticed the great improvements, but almost always with little more than a glance as I passed through. However, this weekend I was drawn to the Farmers’ Market that has for the past eight years called ‘home’ the alley at the north end of Montrose. Thus the

reason for my walk along the street, and a new-found appreciation for our community. It seems, however, that I am not alone in rediscovering “Abbotsford.” While talking to farm market organizer Bruce Fatkin, who extolled the

‘... beneath every skeleton beats a heart, and behind every street beats a community. weekly success of the Saturday event, he pointed out that they have begun to hold midweek markets beside city hall. What makes this remarkable is that, according to their ‘polls’ more than 80 per cent of those who attend the Wednesday market are “new faces.” So I have to assume if the vast majority of market visitors haven’t been to the Montrose market, they likely

also haven’t spent anytime experiencing the charm of Abbotsford’s revitalized village, and that, as I have now discovered, is an opportunity missed. This may soon change because, when reading this Sunday’s Vancouver Province, I noted an article announcing a weekly feature that will describe in detail a dozen “special streets” across the Lower Mainland. Abbotsford’s Montrose is one of those to be featured – listed as number eight in the series. The Province described the streets it will feature as “beneath every skeleton beats a heart, and behind every street beats a community.” The ‘new’ Montrose, and its neighbouring shops and streets, is all of that. So I encourage you, if like me you usually just pass through, to stop, smell the coffee and spend a few moments appreciating a sense of community and ‘small town shopping’ that, despite their convenience, isn’t available in the relative anonymity of malls and big box stores.

BCTF should look to fresh start I hope the BCTF and their president, Susan Lambert, can learn to get along better with Don McRae, the new minister of education, than they did with previous ministers. I for one am getting very tired of hearing Ms. Lambert claiming that education funding in B.C. has been cut when it has not been. Over the past decade, education funding in B.C. has been increased by $1.4 billion. That’s a 26 per cent increase. This is particularly noteworthy when you consider that there are now 63,000 fewer students in B.C.’s education system than there were a decade ago. On top of the increased education operating funding (i.e., to pay teachers and staff), the province has also spent

another $2.1 billion to build 93 new or replacement schools, to acquire 22 new school sites, to renovate 27 schools, and to add on to another 150 schools. How, in good conscience, can a profes-

sional body like the BCTF characterize a significant increase in education funding, along with significant investments in new schools, as a decrease in education funding and somehow claim it to

MCC’s relief, development and peace work in more than 60 countries around the world, and this year there is a focus on food relief for famine in North Africa, and war-torn Syria. People attend to donate, to shop, for entertainment, and certainly for the food. There were 25,200 vereniki (Russian perigees) consumed, 1,600 pounds of farmer sausage and 466 pies served with 75 buckets of ice cream. Relief sale coordinator Dora Hoeppner was encouraged by the thousands of people who attended, and the thousands more who volunteered. “What an inspiring sight to see thousands of happy people under one roof, enjoying themselves, visiting and spending money, and at the same time doing it all for a hungry world in the name of Christ,” she said. This year the event included the Pedaling for Hope Cyclathon, which saw 86 riders cycle either 20 or 40 kms and raise over $90,000 for the food crisis in the African Sahel. Organizer Jon Nofziger was thrilled with the turnout – more than double the riders from last year – and that so many new people participated in the event. The Canadian government will match donations for the Sahel until Sept. 30, meaning that the cyclathon effectively raised $180,000.

Yared Nigussu created an artistic piece in less than 45 minutes during Saturday night’s gala at the Reach. The event was a celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Abbotsford News and featured guest speakers, a silent auction, video display and a look at some of the top stories in recent years.

90 years of News A sold-out crowd of more than 220 people were at the Reach on Saturday night to help celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Abbotsford News. The gala event featured a gourmet dinner, a silent auction, a video presentation, and an overview of some of the major stories covered by the News in recent years. Guest speakers included Mayor Bruce Banman, Black Press CEO Rick O’Connor and Black Press Lower Mainland president Randy Blair. Artist Yared Nigussu, who specializes in producing artwork on demand, created a piece in under 45 minutes. Karina Chow, director of development at the Reach, said the event was “a great success” and featured a “cross-section of the community.” While figures aren’t yet finalized, close to $15,000 was raised and will go to support The Reach Gallery Museum.

Irons runs wild in win over T-Wolves Dan KINVIG Abbotsford News

It’s a tall order simply trying to tackle W.J. Mouat Hawks tailback Maleek Irons, powerful and elusive as he is. Factor in the Hawks’ road grader of an offensive line, and the Grade 11 speedster becomes downright unstoppable. The Robert Bateman Timberwolves got a first-hand taste of that reality on Friday evening, as Irons racked up 324 yards and five touchdowns on just 13 carries in a 64-34 nonconference victory at Mouat Field. “Once he gets a head of steam and gets into the secondary, it’s basically just one or two missed tackles and he’s gone,” noted Hawks coach Denis Kelly, whose team led 28-0 after the first quarter and 42-6 at the half. “But it’s like any good back – if there’s no holes there, you’re dancing around with nowhere to go. He’s getting very good blocking up front. It’s 10 other guys doing their job.” Clovis Lumeka had touchdowns on both sides of the ball for Mouat, rushing for a 61-yard TD and returning a fumble to the end zone on defence. Quarterback Mario Narte tossed a 55-yard pass to Steven Baker and scored on a five-yard QB sneak. The Hawks (2-0) are No. 2 in the provincial AAA rankings. For Bateman (0-1), ranked No. 5 in AA, the defeat was not without silver linings. After struggling to move the ball for much of the first half, the T-Wolves got on the board late in the second quarter when QB Tanner Friesen hit running back John Beckerleg for a TD. Bateman had much more success after the break. Beckerleg would rush for two more majors en route to 128 yards on the ground, while running back Ben Cummings (98 rush yards, one TD) and tight end Kent Hicks (10 catches for 132 yards, one TD) also found the end zone. “It was a whole new game for the kids (after halftime),” Bateman coach Alfred Brathwaite said. “By the time they realized they were in a

The University of the Fraser Valley women’s soccer team began the Canada West regular season by splitting a pair of games at their new home pitch, Chilliwack’s Exhibition Field. The Cascades opened with a 3-0 triumph over the Mount Royal Cougars of Calgary on Friday, but it was the definition of a costly win. UFV captain Chelsea Steffen, who headed home the first goal of the game in the 54th minute, suffered torn ankle ligaments later on and is expected to miss the rest of the season. For a Cascades team which was already missing sophomore star Mackenzie Shopland due to a knee injury, losing another midfielder is a devastating blow. “We’re all kind of gutted,” UFV coach

Rob Giesbrecht said. “Chelsea’s our captain, and it’s a testament to who she is as a player.” The Cascades kept their focus, though, and pulled away on goals by Sam Temple and Donna Pinning to deny Mount Royal a victory in their firstever Canada West game. On Saturday, the Alberta Pandas dealt the UFV women their first defeat of the season by a 2-1 count. The visitors struck for a pair of goals in the first 16 minutes, and while the Cascades controlled the play in the second half, it took until injury time to get on the board. Paige Friesen scored off a feed from Tristan Corneil, but UFV would get no closer. “They took their chances in the first half, and we didn’t,” Giesbrecht said. “But again, I was very proud of my team, because they kept fighting to the end.”

Natasha passed away peacefully at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and will be dearly missed by her son Randy, grandchildren Emma and Dylan by her siblings Henry, Anne, Liz, Jake, Martha, Ben and Irene and by in-laws, extended family and countless friends and neighbors. Natasha’s warm smile, sense of humor and ability to connect with others saw her easily develop friendships and put others at ease. Natasha will be missed by many, but will also be warmly remembered by all those fortunate to have shared her presence. A memorial/celebration of life will be held to honor Natasha at Clearbrook MB Church on Friday Sept. 14th at 11:00 am with refreshments to follow. Mrs. Sara Friesen late of Abbotsford, BC, daughter of the late Peter and Justina Dueck of Steinbach, MB, passed away on September 3, 2012 at the age of 90 at Worthington Pavilion. She is survived by: her sons Ron Friesen, Gary (Laura) Friesen, Walter (Carmen) Friesen, and daughter Johanna (Ernie) Trachuk, 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, brothers: Walter (Nettie), Frank (Sara), Arnold (Vera), John, Ernest (Lorraine), Del (Eilleen), sisters Mary Unger, Betty (Dave) Penner, sister-in-law Maria and brother-in-law Elmer Bartel. She was predeceased by her first husband Abe Friesen, her second husband Anton Friesen, an infant son and her siblings Ben, Martin, Peter, Henry, and Ann. Sara had a strong Christian belief and prayed faithfully for her family. Though Sara was quiet by nature, she enjoyed socializing with friends and getting together with family. Family gatherings were very important to her. Quilting was a hobby she enjoyed after retiring from nursing; and puzzling and word games were favourite pastimes throughout her lifetime. A Viewing will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2012 from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Henderson’s Funeral Home, 34537 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC. HARPER Sarah Sarah “Sadie” Harper, late of Mission, BC, passed away on September 4, 2012 at the age of 76 years at Abbotsford Regional Hospital, after a brief battle with cancer. Survived by her loving husband, Derek; her sons, Paul (Wendy), Mark (Myra), and Sean; her daughters, Michele DeFehr and Lisa McLeod (Mark); her grandchildren, David and Joshua Harper, Mika and Kai Harper, Brittany, Kayla and Lindsay DeFehr, Alexander Hall and Rowan McLeod. She was predeceased by her son-in-law Greg DeFehr. Sarah was born in Liverpool, England. She trained as a registered nurse and midwife in Boston, Plymouth and Oxford, England. She moved to Canada in 1965 with her family and was dedicated to her work as Head Nurse of the maternity unit at MSA Hospital for many years. Many thanks to the nursing staff on Baker 2 at ARH for their wonderful nursing care, and also to Drs Egolf, Chow and Walia. Richard (Rick) Edward Lowe passed away on August 29, 2012 in Abbotsford Regional Hospital at the age of 65. Rick was born in Regina, SK on September 18, 1946. Rick leaves behind his wife Valerie, daughter Amber (Stefan Kirsch), son Jodi (Rebecca) and 5 grandchildren Hanna & Paul Kirsch and Isabella, Ruby & Zen Ortega-Lowe, brother Bob (Sharon), numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews. Rick was predeceased by his father John and mother Helen. Rick will be missed by family and friends.

THOM David David John Thom was born in Edam (Sask) on May 7, 1943. He died at the Abbotsford Hospital (BC) on September 4, 2012. Dave was predeceased by his parents Gordie and Mackey Thom. He is survived by his wife Pat and his two sons Aron (Shannon) and Brian (Karen) and their two sons Elwyn and Alden. He is also survived by Pat’s sister and six brothers and their families. Dave spent his working life as an X-Ray Technician - for 15 years in Saskatoon, and then for 20 years at the Mission Memorial Hospital. He also liked to build and fix things with all of his tools. Dave and Pat played a lot of bridge for enjoyment and friendship. Dave left us bravely and gently and with great good humour. At Dave’s request, there will be no funeral. PEARCE Doris Doris Marie Pearce, known to her loved ones as Marie, surrounded by her family passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at Royal Columbian Hospital after suffering a brain aneurism. Marie was born March 19, 1943 in Edmonton, Alberta. She spent her early years in the prairies before moving East to Ontario where she met her husband, Dave Pearce. They lovingly raised their three children. Marie made the world beautiful through the aromas and tastes of her cooking, the colour and textures of the knitting, quilts and sewing expressing her creativity. She also was a gifted musician and expressed herself through organ and piano music. Spending her later years serving her family and friends in Abbotsford and Calgary, Marie continued her vocation with grace and elegance to her very last day. An exceptional wife and companion to her husband Dave, a loving and generous mother to her two sons Jeff and Steve (Tina) and her daughter Donita (Leroy). She was also a most affectionate and reliable grandmother to her 8 grandchildren Jake, Joel, Lise, Maggie, Alma, Ethan, Libby and Joey. She is survived by and will be missed by a large extended family. Marie Pearce was the perfect example of a godly wife, mother, grandmother and friend and we’re thankful to God for the way she shared her life with the many who knew her. Born in Harrison Mills, BC to Nancy and William Phillips on December 8th, 1937, she spent her childhood in Chehalis and went to school in Mission. She graduated from St. Mary’s in 1957. Millie married Erich Schmidbauer in 1959 and was blessed with 5 children. She was later married to Ray Silver in 1989. She was a strong cultural and spiritual leader in the community and gave of herself heartily to pass on traditional teachings. She leaves a strong legacy and a loving family.
