Most Abbotsford teachers have returned to participating in extracurricular school activities, following a period in the spring that saw them step back from roles such as coaching sports teams, organizing grad events, and supervising students during breaks. Jeff Dunton, president of the Abbotsford District Teachers’ Association (ADTA), said the organization has provided no directive to teachers on the issue. Most who participated in extra activities in the past are continuing to do so, he said. “They still have the option to volunteer or not … but there are a number who are concentrating on their teaching and making sure they’re doing their best for their students in the classroom.” Provincial job action began at the beginning of the 2011 school year while the BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) and the BC Public School Employers’ Association (BCPSEA) were engaged in contract negotiations over issues such as wages and class size composition. The first phase involved teachers refusing to attend staff meetings with administrators and take part in activities such as “meet the teacher” nights. A three-day strike was held in March, followed in April by a further withdrawal of teacher involvement in activities they deemed “volunteer.” Continued on A4

Charges in cocaine, ecstasy conspiracy International investigation spanned B.C., California, Mexico and Peru

Several Lower Mainland men, including one formerly of Abbotsford, face drug trafficking charges in connection with an international plot to import large amounts of cocaine and ship ecstasy to the U.S. Police in B.C. had been tipped by U.S. drug agents in 2008 that several Canadian and U.S. suspects were using encrypted smartphones to organize drug deals on an international level. The investigation ultimately spanned B.C., California, Mexico and Peru. “We took a significant amount of drugs off the streets during this investigation,” said Sgt. Ghalib

Bhayani, spokesperson for the B.C.’s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit. “The cocaine alone represents a street value (per gram) of over $17 million.” The charges come four years after officers first conducted a raid in Princeton that netted 117,000 ecstasy pills. Subsequent raids in late 2008 uncovered 97 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a truck carrying bananas at the Pacific border crossing and 10 kilograms of cocaine in Burnaby in May 2009. Police also searched homes in Burnaby, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Lake Country in 2009, finding various prohibited handguns. Charges of conspiracy to traffic and import co-

caine and illegal firearm possession have been laid against both 38-year-old Langley resident Jeremy Albert Stark and Khamla Wong, a 42-year-old former Abbotsford resident who is presently at large and wanted by police. Burnaby resident Christopher Lloyd Mehan, 40, is charged with conspiracy to import 97 kilograms of cocaine. Surrey resident Robert Charles Arthur, 32, is charged with cocaine possession for the purpose of trafficking and is currently out on bail. Matthew James Higgins, 28, of Powell River also is charged with conspiracy to traffick in ecstasy, as is 50-year-old Vancouver resident Hernan Osvaldo Veloso.

Tuesday marked the first day back to school for almost 19,000 students in the Abbotsford School District. At Ecole Margaret Stenersen Elementary School, Megan Hewitt’s Grade 2 class discussed common fears associated with a return to the classroom.

Sports were halted, grad ceremonies were staged by administrators and parents, and report cards were not issued. But 75 per cent of teachers who voted at the end of June favoured a tentative contract agreement which runs until June 30, 2013 and imposes a cooling-off period. That contract provides improved benefits and seniority provisions but no wage increases. Abbotsford school district spokesman Dave Stephen said on Tuesday morning that the situation in local schools appears to be “back to normal. “We have had no indication that teachers won’t be participating in extracurricular activities such as coaching, theatre

productions, taking classes on field trips, etc. Administrators are meeting with teachers as per a normal school year,” he said. School-based staff have returned to performing supervision duties, which in the spring had been taken over by administrators and managers. As well, report cards will again be issued. Dunton said he anticipates a relatively smooth 2012-13 school year, but there is uncertainty ahead with the resumption of bargaining in March and the provincial election in May. Meanwhile, the BCTF is continuing to pursue a court challenge against Bill 22, the legislation that passed in March that made it illegal for teachers to strike, imposed a cooling-off period, and introduced a mediator.

Hospital responds to overcrowding concerns Fraser Health plans to convert under-used beds in pediatric ward Fraser Health will convert under-used pediatric beds at Abbotsford Regional Hospital (ARH) into an adult overflow space to temporarily reduce pressures on the emergency room and to reduce the number of patients who are treated in non-clinical areas. In the recent past, overcrowding has led to patients being placed in beds in hall-

ways – sometimes for days – resulting in concerns from medical staff and the public. The pediatric department at ARH was originally built to accommodate future growth, and there are many under-used beds that can be temporarily and safely converted for adult patients to ease ER congestion, said Rowena Rizzotti, executive director of clinical programs

and operations, women’s health, maternity, infant, child and youth. She said the beds will be converted back to pediatric beds when demand increases. “Our priority is the safety of the children in our care. With any of these changes, we will make sure that our pediatric patients will be cared for separately from

adult patients,” Rizzotti said. Fraser Health will move the pediatric daycare into the unused portion of the pediatric ward. The health authority will then convert the current daycare space into temporary adult beds to make sure patients are being cared for in an appropriate space. Minor renovations that will

be completed by November include the installation of a secure doorway to divide the pediatric area from the area that will support adult patients. Rizzotti said that as a regional acute care facility, every effort must be made to ensure ARH has the capacity to respond to demands for higher levels of care from within the region.

Abbotsford Police are trying to determine whether there are any connections between a shooting that occurred early Tuesday morning and one that took place in 2011 in the same area. Both incidents happened in the 2500 block of Bradner Road. The program, which helps supply grad clothes to students who can’t afford them, has to move from its present location in the Sevenoaks Shopping Centre.

Talia’s Closet is looking for a new home. The program, which is operated by the Youth Resource Centre at Abbotsford Community Services, supplies new or used gowns, suits and accessories to be worn by local graduating students who may not have the financial means to buy or rent their own. “For many young people, high school graduation is a great success, and if graduating students want to be celebrated, then financial reasons should not stand in the way,” said youth worker Laurel Curtin. But the program may be in jeopardy. Two years ago, the Sevenoaks Shopping Centre provided a vacant space on the second floor. The location was used for the donation of dresses, and as a preparation area for volunteers such as seamstresses, hairdressers and photographers.

But the space has been rented and Talia’s Closet must relocate. “While we are sad to give up the space, we certainly understand the needs of the landlord and their business decision. We thank them for their generosity,” said Curtin. The group is appealing to Abbotsford’s business community, or anyone, to help find access to a clean, dry, centrally located space that will allow Talia’s Closet to continue. But the clock is already ticking. The new tenants are set to take over the location on Oct. 1, leaving about three weeks for the group to find a new home and move. “We’re just starting to introduce young men’s wear, but now that we are moving we will have to wait on that,” said project coordinator Linda Hamilton, who began the program with just 10 dresses. Today, thanks to community donations, there are more than 100 gowns to choose from. The program is free for the students, and the organization works with local high school counsellors to find students who need the service.

“We at the youth resource centre have seen for years how hard it is for some of the youth we work with, that worked so hard to overcome obstacles, to graduate. But then there’s no money for them to do the whole thing,” said Simone Maassen, youth resource centre supervisor. She said most girls who use the service are surprised by the quality of the dresses. “They think, ‘OK, I get some sort of a second-hand something,’ but what they get is like a ball gown so they are really blown away by that.” The first year of the program helped outfit 10 girls. In 2012, the number grew to 20. This year, the program was going to expand to help Mission students, but all plans are now on hold. The group is looking for any kind of storage space, hopefully big enough for a second room where girls can try on the dresses. The current location is approximately 800 square feet, but organizers would be happy with any usable location. Anyone who may be able to assist can call 604-859-7681.

Curbside Compostable Collection

The City of Abbotsford plans to start curbside compostable collection on January 1, 2013. Food waste will be able to be combined with yard waste. Both compostables and recyclables will be collected weekly, and garbage will be collected bi-weekly. The City intends to provide further information and supporting items to residents throughout the fall of 2012. Of course, this only worked for awhile until some sharp-eyed hall-wart noticed I was not locking my locker, and various items from it disappeared, spiking my already stratospheric heart rate. Ultimately, over the months and years to follow, I came to have an uneasy truce with the evil orbs, and the catacombs they protected. But to this day, if you want to keep me out of somewhere, just hang a combination lock in front of it. You don’t even have to actually lock it.

I was here farming peacefully for 10 years before the blueberry farmers moved next to me. Don’t tell me that violent explosions are a normal part of farming practice.

Thanks for voice of reason

I am reading Henry Braun’s blog from his website – henrybraun.ca – and it strikes me that Henry is not at all the same as the other councillors. Instead of nodding his head and seconding the motions, he is actually independently thinking, he is pointing out things that are very wrong and trying to fix them. Not since Moe Gill meekly tried to stand up against two bullies and Christine Caldwell wrote a letter saying she disagreed, then ran away on vacation, during the “Plan A” propaganda blitz, has there ever been a dissident. No elected council member has ever appeared to have such free will, such interest or such honesty in stating simple truths that 75

per cent of the population was suspicious about. Will our incumbent council get on board with Henry, possibly even implicating themselves? (They were all yes voters, remember?) Will our new mayor be supportive of Henry in his quest to change things from the status quo, to give us ratepayers a break? Henry, bless your voice of reason. Thank you for not just being another paycheque-cashing headnodder. The little raggle-taggle group of whistle-blowers that have been trying to point this kind of stuff out for years to no avail, thanks you most sincerely.

Pipeline foes see hope in green wave Robert FReeman Black Press

Ending the “addiction to oil” and switching to renewable “green” energy sources is the longterm goal of opposition to the Kinder Morgan pipeline. Most of a town hall meeting organized by pipeline opponents in Chilliwack recently focused on warnings about the perceived risks to the local economy and the health of area residents, if the Trans Mountain pipeline owned by Kinder Morgan should rupture and spill diluted bitumen (tar sands) into the environment. But after the meeting, PIPE UP Network organizer Mike Hale was clearly elated by the talk by audience members and a panel of guest speakers about ending the “addiction” to oil and funding “green” energy sources. “That’s the revolutionary movement,” Hale said, adding

that he believes there has been a “seachange” in public willingness to switch to alternate energy sources like wind and solar power. Reuben George, a panelist at the meeting from the Tsleil-Waututh First Nation, called for an end to government subsidies for fossil fuels and re-directing them to renewable sources. Ian Stephen, another panel member, said Canadians need to “pipe up” and make the federal government listen to the public demand for clean energy to end the economy based on fossil fuels. Panelist Ben West, a director at the Western Canada Wilderness Committee, said a local solution to “getting off the oil” is the Inter-Urban Rail line, which has long been proposed as a rapid transit route. He said rapid transit would reduce Hwy 1 traffic, protecting air quality,

and reducing urban sprawl, which would protect Fraser Valley farmlands. Kinder Morgan opponents say building the pipeline to pump fossil fuels to

export markets holds few benefits for B.C. while the risks of spills increase with the proposed expansion. West noted the NDP has proposed

Pharmacy robbed at gunpoint The Abbotsford Police are searching for a man who robbed a pharmacy at gunpoint. On Aug. 23 at 4:10 p.m. a man with his face covered entered a pharmacy in the 30400 block of Blueridge Drive. He approached the pharmacy staff, displayed a firearm and robbed the pharmacy of a variety of narcotics. The man fled to Blueridge Drive, where he entered the passenger side of a parked vehicle. The vehicle then drove northbound on Mt. Lehman Road. The suspect is described as a Caucasian male with a medium height and build. He was wearing a grey

In September, 220 adventurers took on the 2011 Innovative Fitness Canuck Place Adventure Challenge. Racers kayaked the calm waters of Deep Cove and Cultus Lake then set off on mountain or road bikes, before returning to tackle the trails on foot and racing back to finish to the cheers of onlookers. While challenging themselves, each of the participants was reminded of the daily challenges of Canuck Place children. All of the racers raised the minimum of $1000 for Canuck Place—and many exceeded it—raising a record $285,000! An event such as this is the sum of many parts and we look forward to our 2012 event, aiming to incorporate what we have learned into an even better experience. UFV student Braeden Wiens demonstrates how to use a GPS unit at an event in Africa. Titled Planning for the Future of a City, Generation, and Workforce, the workshop was designed to help improve gender equality in the field of urban planning.

Students from UFV spent the summer in Africa working with UNaffiliated programs on initiatives aimed at educating women, and engaging in community planning with a primary school in rural Tanzania. One project involved working with the Girls in ICT Portal, a UN affiliate designed to help girls prepare for careers in information and communication technology. Through this program, the UFV students hosted a seminar aimed at teaching young women how to work with technological tools used for urban development. Titled Planning for the Future of a City, Generation, and Workforce, the workshop was designed to help improve gender equality in the field of urban planning. The women were taught by UFV students how to use a GPS unit, and how to incorporate it with basic mapping. While the event was hosted at the end of June, students were busy preparing before they left Canada. UFV students worked on press releases, bookings, and invitations to

UFV students conduct research in Tanzania From A30

They also gave their own presentations at the event, in addition to conducting the training. “It was exciting to host an event like that to celebrate success and change,” said UFV Geography instructor Cherie Enns. “And to know that the students’ research will be used in Tanzania, and even beyond that, is very rewarding.” Enns has been leading UFV students to Africa on study tours for the past three years. This year there were 16 students. Four of them received funding from the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) development program. The rest of the students were selffunded. While in Tanzania, half of the students carried out applied internships for two to three months. Their placements included law firms, non-government agencies (NGOs), and research internships at Ardhi University. The other eight students completed field studies from May to June where they worked on general assignments, took field trips, and wrote reports. They also spent a week at an elementary school near Mount Kilimanjaro, assessing the school environment and its sustainability. “Overall, we were working in partnership with the community to create a vision for the school,” said Enns. “We were exploring opportunities to strengthen the rural school and looking at how to make it more sustainable, economically, environmentally, and culturally.” Students worked on landscape assessment, mapping, food growth, and land use planning. They created a final report for the school, which will also be submitted to the local Member of Parliament, and to the UNICEF

Canada Green Learning program. Students based their research on the UN Sustainable School checklist, which focuses on encouraging and safe learning envi-

ronments. UFV students are currently working to connect the primary school in Tanzania with one in the Fraser Valley that also participates in the

UNICEF Green Learning program. The work of the UFV students this summer will be presented at the Child in the City conference in Croatia at the end

We think of music as something created for entertainment, without knowing music can make us smarter. Researchers have known for decades that developing a child’s musical ability may actually improve their ability to learn and be successful at other disciplines, such as language, math and science.

In Irvine California, researchers conducted a study in which they had three groups of elementary school aged children. The first group was the control group, which the other two groups would be tested against before and after the study. Group two was given extra computer studies and the third group, placed into a musical curriculum. At the end of the study all of the children were tested for how well they learned other skills in math, science, complex reasoning tasks, etc. The results revealed that the “computer” children scored somewhat higher than the “control” children, however the “music” children’s scores far exceeded even the ‘computer’ kids’. Training children in music at an early age exercises higher brain functions, including complex reasoning tasks. The pathways we use for spatial reasoning are similar to the music pathways in our brain. When we listen to music, the spatial pathways are “turned on” and ready to be used. It’s been a remarkable roller-coaster of a year for Tory Nyhaug, Canada’s reigning king of BMX. The 20-year-old Coquitlam product scored a trio of victories last weekend as the Canadian BMX Championships rolled into Abbotsford, marking another high point in an epic story of resilience and pain

tolerance that would make Don Cherry proud. Nyhaug was shaping up to be a legit medal threat at the London Olympics, rising as high as fourth in the world rankings. But on May 13, a devastating crash during a race in the Netherlands put his Olympics in jeopardy. A ruptured spleen and a broken wrist were the net result, and he spent 11

days in the intensive care ward of a Dutch hospital. But after surgery to remove the spleen, Nyhaug made an amazing recovery, and he was on the gate in London just over two months after the crash. While the result wasn’t what he might have hoped for – he fell short of advancing from the heats to the semifinals by a single point – simply experiencing the five-ring

circus made the ordeal worthwhile. “It was pretty traumatic,” Nyhaug told The News on Saturday, reflecting on his Olympic odyssey. “I didn’t know if I was going to get to go, but I was so happy I was able to. It was an unbelievable experience, and I want to go back in four years. “I was pretty close to 100 per cent (in London), but defi-

nitely, the overall sharpness wasn’t there. But I did the best I could with what I had, and with any luck, I could have been through. But that’s BMX.” In Abbotsford on the weekend, Nyhaug served notice that any rust from his injury convalescence is long gone. Four TDs by Irons spearheads Hawks’ blowout Mouat opens season with win in Oregon

A dominant 42-18 triumph over the Elmira Falcons highlighted a football weekend to remember for the W.J. Mouat Hawks.

The Hawks’ road trip to Oregon yielded not only the aforementioned victory on Friday, but also featured a visit to Autzen Stadium in Eugene to watch the University

of Oregon Ducks trounce Arkansas State 57-34 in NCAA gridiron action on Saturday. Mouat alum Boseko Lokombo is a junior linebacker with the Ducks, and has moved into the starting lineup this season. “It was a great weekend for the

kids, and the coaches too,” said Hawks coach Denis Kelly,

noting that his team also had a chance to chat with Lokombo and tour the Ducks’

football facilities. “The Oregon game itself, there’s so much hype and hoopla around it. It’s quite a neat environment.” Opening their nonconference schedule against Elmira, the Hawks got a dominant effort from the defence, while Maleek Irons spear-

headed an unstoppable running game. The Grade 11 tailback scampered for 137 yards and four touchdowns on 15 carries, while fullback Taylor Hinton also eclipsed the century mark on the ground, rumbling for 102 yards on nine carries. Quarterback Mario Narte and running back Crysthian Rivas also rushed for majors, while Matt Riley booted four converts. n Up next for the Hawks is an exhibition game against an Abbotsford foe, the Robert Bateman Timberwolves (Friday, 7:30 p.m., Mouat Field). The T-Wolves, heading into their second season of fullfledged AA football, are ranked No. 5 in the province, but AAA No. 2-ranked Mouat will pose a stiff test. Bateman was slated to open on the road last Friday against the Lynden (Wash.) Lions, but

had to cancel because they didn’t have enough players available. Several T-Wolves had summer work commitments, while others were out of town on vacation. Head coach Alfred Brathwaite said they’ll have a full roster available for the Mouat game, though. “Our kids are ready,” he said. “It’s a big deal. They’ve practiced all summer long waiting for this, and they haven’t had the opportunity to show what they can do. This gives them the opportunity to do that, and it should be quite exciting.” n Abbotsford’s two other AA senior football teams also debut on the road this week. Cascades draw in exhibition finale

The University of the Fraser Valley women’s soccer team wrapped up the preseason with a 1-1 draw against the UBC-Okanagan Heat on Saturday at Exhibition Field in Chilliwack. The Cascades posted a 2-3-2 record during the exhibition portion of the schedule, and they open the Canada West regular season on Friday against the Mount Royal

“Carly Neeson had her best performance of the preseason; she was lively and assertive in attacking and scored a fantastic goal,” Cascades head coach Rob Giesbrecht said. “I felt we responded well to getting scored on and had a number of high quality scoring chances to regain our lead. Angels stumble on road, fall to Saskatoon The next challenge for Abbotsford's fledgling Lingerie Football League team is learning how to play on the road. It took the BC Angels some time to find their legs in their first game away from home, as they fell 22-18 to the Saskatoon Sirens. The Angels dug themselves a 22-6 hole early in the third quarter, before staging a rally to get within four points. But

in the waning minutes, they couldn't get the stop they needed, as the Sirens got three fourth-down conversions and ran out the clock. "We made a wicked comeback – the girls were resilient," Angels coach Kevin Snell said. "If we could have gotten one more stop, we would have had a chance." BROCK Darlene Rose (nee Freylinger) Born in Mission on June 21, 1952, Darlene passed away at Mission Memorial Hospital on August 19, 2012, after a brief battle with cancer. Darlene was pre-deceased by her parents Michael and Cora Freylinger, son David Brock and granddaughter Mackenzie Rose Forgues-Brock. She is survived by her husband Graham Simpson, son Walter (Bev)Brock, sister Sheila(Ron) McRae, nephew Neil McRae, nieces Roxanne Graham and Jennifer Freylinger and good friends Vern Henderson, Pat Harrup and James & Eva Sampson. Darlene was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed. In lieu of flowers, donations in Darleneâ€™s memory may be made to the Candian Cancer Society. Sarah Martens died September 2, 2012 at Abbotsford Regional Hospital after suffering a stroke eight days before. She was born October 18, 1913, the third of nine children, to Henry and Margaret (Klippenstein) Enns. Her birthplace was a tiny Mennonite village in Slavgorod Colony, Russia. In 1926 the family fled the growing tyranny of the Soviet Union, immigrating to Saskatchewan, where they lived a short time before moving to Yarrow, BC. The general poverty among immigrants of that time was such that Sarah never had a chance for education. Throughout her life, however, she was an avid and curious reader. As a child she worked side by side with adults in the enormous hop yards of the Fraser Valley. Later she worked for time as a housemaid in Chilliwack and Vancouver. Sarah married Jacob Martens July 30, 1938. From 1967 onward, the couple lived in Abbotsford. Their relationship was to endure through good times and bad until her beloved Jake died in 1984. Sarah was a strong woman who loved to socialize. She will be deeply missed. Sarah is survived by brothers Henry, John, Peter, George and by sister Anne Loewen; children Mel (Doreen), Robert, and Dolly (Bob) Peters; grandchildren Brian (Colleen) Peters, David Peters and Sarah Martens; and great grandchildren Kaeden and Jackson Peters. As per her wishes there will be no viewing. Burial Friday September 7th at 9:30 am at Mennonite Cemetery, followed by memorial service at 11:00 am at Bakerview MB Church. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honour to the Mennonite Historical Society.

NORGREN, Dorothy Evelyn (nee: Payne) Mom was born in Camrose Alberta on Sept. 11, 1934 and passed away in the early morning hours of September 1, 2012, surrounded by her loved ones after a long and courageous battle with diabetes and kidney disease. Mom was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend who lived her life with humility. She enjoyed her family, bingo and watching every sport on TV except soccer. She was predeceased by her father Varnon, mother Jessie, brother Ken and son Barry. She is survived and will be dearly missed by Budd, Sons: Robbin (Cora) and Marty (Corinne); Daughters; Barb (Tim) and Deanne (Jamie); Daughter-in-law; Sandra, 12 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren and many, in-laws, friends and extended family. The family would like to express their thanks for the excellent care that mom received while at the Renal Unit at ARHCC and at The Cottage. In lieu of ďŹ‚owers the family requests that a donation be given to the BC Kidney Foundation in momâ€™s name.
