Oval Volleyball Athletes land spots on National Team It’s been more than two years since the Olympic Winter Games were in full swing at the Richmond Olympic Oval, but Canadian Spirit is still very much alive under the Oval roof. Earlier this summer, the Oval played host to the Canadian Olympic Women’s Soccer Team as they trained for the Summer Games in London. Now, two players who are recent graduates of the Oval’s Volleyball Centre of Excellence have earned spots on Canada’s Junior National Team. Juliana Kaufmanis and Nicola Laniuk-Etter, both of whom trained at the Oval under head coach Joanne Ross, have been selected to the Junior National Team, taking them each one step closer to realizing their volleyball dreams. “It is a crazy experience that’s for sure,” says Kaufmanis, who calls Richmond home and has committed to the play with the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds this fall. “It’s really exciting to get to represent your country.” Laniuk-Etter is from Surrey and like Kaufmanis competed with the Vancouver Thunder Volleyball Club in addition to training at the Oval.

“Without Joanne (Ross) helping me to improve so much throughout the year I don’t know if I’d be here,” Laniuk-Etter professes. “I owe a lot to her.” The hope is that their successes are not uncommon. The Oval’s Volleyball program continues to train committed athletes who are dedicated to personal and performance excellence. “Our responsibility is recognizing their strengths and areas of improvement from the start of the year and following through with a focused season plan,” says Volleyball Centre of Excellence Head Coach, Joanne Ross. “This integrated approach ensures these athletes are healthy, and physically and mentally prepared for training and competition.” Not only does it make sure they’re ready, in the case of Kaufmanis and Laniuk-Etter it allows them to compete at higher levels, proving the Oval is a place that not only hosts elite athletes, but grooms them too.

It looks like man versus the elements. Scaling up the side of a mountain face or clambering up an artificial wall might seem like a solitary activity. But even when you have nothing but clear skies above or the safety of padded mats below climbing is anything but an individual sport. “Climbing culture is uniquely supportive and inclusive,” says Andrew Wilson, Sport Climbing Specialist at the Richmond Olympic Oval. Wilson, a former National Team Coach, has developed a climbing curriculum at the Oval for climbers: beginner to competitive. Beginning this fall, he says those unfamiliar with climbing as an activity might be surprised to discover all that one can learn in this sport. “Climbing develops a number of physical literacy skills including body awareness, co-ordination and balance,” explains Wilson. “It uses body weight as resistance, and it promotes safe, functional strength development.” The sport boasts a great balance between physical and mental training and is perfect for youth in their developmental years. “Climbing is the perfect activity for kids,” says current National Team Member, Jamie Chong. “It’s fun and kids don’t even realize they’re getting exercise and learning to problem solve.”
Your child will see more practice time under the Oval roof this year. Parents rejoice for underground parking and weather protected training facilities. RSA players will benefit from practicing in a high calibre and inspirational training environment.
For the more experienced climber – of which there are many in these parts – climbing has a challenging competitive side too.

I’d love to train there,” McColl adds. “I love that climbing is beside so many other mainstream sports.” Wilson hopes that very excitement spreads to all those who come through the Oval in November, when the facility hosts its first ever climbing competition. “It appeals to goal oriented individuals who enjoy ever-changing, progressive challenges from a physical pursuit,” says Wilson of what type of athletes might be seen during the event in November. “Climbing is unique in that it demands physical and mental problem solving at the same time.” A perfect combination for those looking for more than ‘just a climb’.
