Rebels head coach honoured by Red Deerians Jesse Wallin named City’s Favourite Coach BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express
L
ife’s ranges of experiences have been an extraordinary teacher for Red Deer Rebels coach Jesse Wallin. He’s won gold in the Favourite Coach category of this year’s Best of Red Deer, and he’s grateful for the community’s show of support. “It’s very humbling and a tremendous honour,” he said. “It’s an honour to have that recognition from the people of Red Deer.” Wallin, 34, who has been head coach of the Rebels since 2008, is known for his outstanding coaching skills and his solid commitment to causes including that of clearing up misunderstandings about mental illness. Wallin’s passion for mental health awareness was sparked by his father Brian’s suicide in 1994. Brian had battled bipolar disorder for more than a year. Jesse and his wife Jenn partnered with the Canadian Mental Health Association in 2001 to create the video ‘Tearing Away the Myths of Mental Illness’. They also supported the ‘Speak Up For Mental Health’ campaign which was launched by the CMHA several years ago. “What I have found through the process is that it’s been tremendously helpful and healing for me,” explains Jesse of choosing to be open about his family’s loss and the subject of mental health in general. “It was a huge part of my grieving process, and still is.” His connection to Red Deer stretches back to when he was 16, and started playing hockey here. Born in Saskatoon and raised mostly in North Battleford, he recalls feeling at home pretty much from the start upon his arrival. “I love the area, the community and Central Alberta in general. I’ve always felt very welcome here and embraced by the community. And when you feel that way, you want to give back. I’ve tried to give back as much as I can.” He wasn’t initially interested in hockey as a young boy. “When we moved to North Battleford, the house we moved into had a rink in the backyard. One day the neighbourhood kids came by and asked my dad if they could use our rink. Of course, dad said that was no problem. It only took one afternoon of watching the rest of the neighbourhood playing in my backyard before I got out there, and there was no looking back. I was hooked.” A passion for hockey continued to grow into his teens, and ulti-
mately Jesse landed the opportunity to play with the Rebels, having been drafted in 1993. “I remember hanging up the phone that day and I knew the direction of my life from that day forward,” he recalls. “I was going to be a Red Deer Rebel and then move on to play in the NHL. It was the next step in the dream.” He moved to Red Deer in 1994, which was a life-altering year for another reason as well. That April, his father took his life. With his father’s death, Jesse, who is the oldest of three, recalls feeling like he went from being a boy to a man in the span of one hour. Almost immediately, he also became aware of the misconceptions surrounding mental illness and suicide. “When you live with someone who is fighting mental illness you see and understand that it’s not a choice. I saw how hard he fought to get better and what he went through. I just had this drive within me to try and validate what he went through. “I wanted to defend my dad, and really try and bring this illness to the forefront. I wanted to honour him – that’s what it came down to.” In the week’s following his father’s death, he was also doubting whether moving to Red Deer was the best thing to do at the time. Finally, his mom explained that his father would be devastated if he knew his son didn’t move forward with his plans to join the Rebels. “That changed it for me. I think it just really demonstrates the power of a dream because I look back on it, and without a doubt it was the hardest year of my life.” Settling into life in Red Deer proved a busy time, juggling hockey with wrapping up school. The next big step was being drafted by Detroit in June of 1996. “I was a member of the Red Wings organization and attended my first camp in Detroit in 1996. That was a surreal experience. I was drafted late in the first round and went into a powerhouse organization. Your first NHL camp is one of those things you remember forever.” He would also spend two more years with the Rebels, playing in the World Juniors both of those seasons. “In September of 1998, I turned pro and went to Detroit’s training camp and was sent to their affiliate Adirondack of the AHL for one season.” Then it was off to join the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks in 1999 for a couple of seasons. “In 2001, I made the Red Wings full time and played for two seasons.”
HONOURED - Jesse Wallin, head coach of the Red Deer Rebels, was named tops in the Favourite Coach category of this year’s Best of Red Deer. After his second year in Detroit, he was a free agent. He ended up signing with Calgary and went to camp with the Flames in 2003. But first, he ventured back to the U.S. on what was to be a temporary basis. But his life took an abrupt turn once again. An injury left him with an extremely serious concussion that would be symptomatic for years. That was the fall of 2003, and although he had had concussions before, this was different. “There were many more symptoms and they were much more severe. They lasted so much longer, and it ended up being the better part of three years before I really felt back to normal.” Early in 2004, his doctor asked him if he couldn’t continue in hockey what he might do with his life. “That was the moment it hit me that this was bad, and could
Tanis Reid/Red Deer Express
be career-threatening. I was still hoping to recover and get better.” That summer, doctors recommended he not continue with his hockey career. “It was the death of an identity and the death of a dream, so the biggest step was just acknowledging that.” Jesse found himself at a crossroads, but it wasn’t long before the opportunity to come onboard as an assistant coach with the Rebels surfaced in 2005 before becoming head coach. Besides bringing out the best in his players, Wallin is intent on developing them into outstanding citizens who are dedicated to the community as well. “They’re in the public eye and they are also role models for the up-and-comers and the young kids in our community.” For Jesse, the mix of compas-
sion, ambition and a clear-cut vision are what set him apart as a coach. “For me, being genuine is how I try to operate. And I think my players would tell you I’m hard on them and demanding, but I also think they would say they if there is something they want to get off their chests, my door is always open.” And through the ups and downs of successful seasons and others that bring inevitable challenges, he’s just thrilled to be a part of the game he loves. “You’re in the action, and the decisions you make directly impact the game. But the single most rewarding thing is being able to make a difference. I think that coaching junior hockey is such a rewarding level to coach at.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Local teacher honoured through recognition of his work BY KIRSTEN PALARDY Red Deer Express Many teachers see the same students every day all year at the same location and teach the same courses, but Brian St. Germain is one of the few who gets to break that trend. St. Germain teaches with First Nations Metis and Inuit (FNMI) Learning Services, which is a program through Red Deer public and Catholic schools. “Our program assists teachers and aboriginal students to be successful. We teach a lot of the cultural background and provide the support to FNMI students,” said St. Germain. He was voted bronze in this year’s Best of Red Deer and said he is honoured considering how many great teachers there are here in Red Deer and Central Alberta. “I had some great teachers in high school and junior high and that is what motivated me to want to be like them and become a teacher.” St. Germain has been teaching for 32 years including eight years at the Red Deer Remand Centre. His job currently takes him to about 60 different schools within the Red Deer public and Catholic systems and he said while it is different from previous teaching jobs he enjoys it. “I’m truly lucky because I get to go to so many different classrooms. I loved having my own class and building those relationships but now over the course of seven years I have gotten to know many more
students a little bit more.” He said it is gratifying to see former students because they frequently remember him and the lessons he has taught them. “Even some of the guys from the Remand Centre remember the things I taught and the relationship and that’s really humbling because they’ve used that as grounds to better themselves.” St. Germain said he teaches the FNMI program to students of all ages from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and said it is a very different experience within each age group. “The high school students ask questions about the misconceptions regarding the culture but the younger groups are so accepting of everything that they want to know the legends and stories of the culture instead.” He said he enjoys teaching each of the different age groups because as they grow the topics that are important to them change. “My favourite part of teaching with FNMI is that the students show much more pride in their culture which wasn’t really there when I was younger.” St. Germain said that the FNMI program is a great way to encourage students to continue with their education and he feels that it is a great addition to Alberta Education’s goal. “Alberta Education has what’s called ‘goal three’ which is to have schools increase the success rates for students completing high school and receiving scholarships and I do think that the FNMI

program has an impact and influence on students.” He said that even though the program is targeted to aboriginal students that he is quite enthusiastic about the number of non-aboriginal students taking an interest in the history of the different cultures that surround them. As a part of the FNMI learning services program, St. Germain said they also provide resources, ideas and lesson plans to teachers to aid them in working with their
students. “We don’t just work with aboriginal students because we do all sorts of classroom presentations and see a lot of students who all have great questions.” St. Germain said the program is great and he feels it plants a seed with a lot of students that gets them going and awakens them to some of their own heritage or to other cultures. “I love my job and it’s a fulfilling career that I am sure glad I got started in.” kpalardy@reddeerexpress.com

Top of the line products and service at Fetch Haus BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Dedicated to the well-being of pets on every level, the staff at Fetch Haus aim to treat clients’ animals as their own. The business, which was launched in November of 2011, is located at #3, 4946 -- 53 Ave. Fetch Haus recently landed several honours in this year’s Best of Red Deer including gold in the Best Pet Store, Best Pet Groomer, Best New Business and Friendliest Staff categories. They also won silver in Best Customer Service. Owner Sabrina Thieme couldn’t be happier about the recognition shown to the new venture. “I was a little bit overwhelmed, because over the past few years I’ve seen who has won and it’s been a lot of the bigger stores,” she explained. “I was really excited. We’ve definitely worked really hard for it, and we know we have to be different in order to compete with a lot of the corporate stores.” Fetch Haus is described as a unique pet lifestyle boutique for modern pets and their people. Customers will find a growing selection of healthy pet foods, supplements, toys, treats, chews,

collars, leashes, grooming supplies, apparel and more. Product lines also include a large selection of toys, collars, leashes and waste bags made out of recycled materials. “I only sell things that I would give to my own dogs,” she said. “I really try to find unique, healthy products and we focus on the ones made in Canada or the U.S.A. But if I wouldn’t give it to my own dogs, we won’t sell it. My philosophy is that I want to stand behind the products I sell.” An extensive line of grooming and training services are also available at Fetch Haus. “It’s all about incorporating total pet health and wellness. There’s much more to it than just food.” The name of the business also denotes Thieme’s German heritage; she and her family settled in Calgary when she was a child. As to a career, she went on to become an accountant but found over the years that her interest in animal care and training kept growing. She began doing online research about training when her own two dogs, Zac and Casey, were having a few issues. She completed a course in Kelowna and starting training but continued working as an accountant. But one day she realized she

Bridal store a one-stop shop for wedding attire BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express Brides looking to not only find their perfect dress but to make sure their groom and the rest of the wedding party have what they need can check out one local bridal store which offers a one-stop shop when it comes to wedding attire. Bridal Couture Dezigns in Red Deer has been open for about six years but new owner Iska Hollman purchased the business in December 2010. The bridal store won bronze for Best Bridal Wear Store in this year’s Best of Red Deer. “I’m so ecstatic that we were voted. For me, especially being a new business it’s really difficult to break through. We’ve done a lot of community involvement, so just to have some recognition and to know that we are starting to move forward is great,” said Hollman. The bridal store carries a wide variety of wedding gowns and can meet any customer’s budget. “With the order-in gowns we can start at $295 and one of our most expensive dresses in store is around $5,000. We can also order gowns in the higher $10,000 plus range as well – we just don’t carry them in the store,” said Hollman. “We have one of the largest ranges in all of Alberta.” The in-store selection of wedding gowns is abundant with over 200 varieties available for customers to try on. “We also have our trunk shows every month. We select one designer every month and we feature them. They send us anywhere between 10 and 30 of their dresses. We keep them in store for usually a week so it gives our brides another opportunity to see new dresses and new styles. Sometimes we get dresses before they are out in other stores,” said Hollman.
When a bride comes into the store they can expect to be greeted at the door. “We then bring them in and we go through an interview process. We ask them what they are looking for, what they have tried on and what they would like to try. We also ask them about their wedding. We want to make sure that the dress they are looking for matches their wedding,” said Hollman. “We then pick the dresses for the girls. We know what we have here and it’s a lot easier for us to pick what will look best on each body type. And then once we order their dress and we keep in touch with them and we move forward until the dress comes in. We have the brides meet with our seamstress and we see them through until their wedding day. “We have our alterations services here so we really get to see brides from the very beginning – girls getting engaged right up to days until their wedding. The whole process and knowing we are here for them really makes me happy and hearing their stories and just being part of their wedding, their happy day.” She added the staff at Bridal Couture Dezigns wants to ensure every bride has the best experience possible when searching for their perfect dress. “Customer service for us is huge. We definitely try to take everything one step above. That is why we have the in-house seamstress. We are the only bridal store in Central Alberta to have an in-house seamstress.” Meanwhile, Bridal Couture Dezigns carries much more than just wedding gowns. They have a large selection of bridesmaid, flower girl dresses as well as evening gowns. They also rent tuxedos and carry a selection of jewelry and shoes as well.

SIGN OF SUCCESS - Linda Gillett and Carla MacKenzie, co-managers of Nutter’s, celebrate 30 years of the company’s success as well as a gold win in the 2012 Best of Red Deer. KirstenPalardy/Red Deer Express
36th St. & Gaetz Ave.
Nutter’s Bulk & Natural Foods is celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, and the Red Deer location is doing so with a gold win in the Best of Red Deer. They won in the category for Best Health Food Store. Linda Gillett and Carla MacKenzie comanage the Red Deer Nutter’s and said the staff have become like family to them and their customers are what make them a success. “What sets us apart is our knowledge and our extensive training. We have a whole filing cabinet of information. We answer questions the best we can,” said Gillett. She added Nutter’s is not just health food but a whole body nutrition store. Chris Barnes, who works in vitamins and supplements at the store, said it is great to offer a wide selection of items for people with allergies because it seems they are more common and seen in people at a younger age. “We keep very up to date on what’s in demand and bring in new product all the time. Nutter’s has diversified over the years and is proud to carry specialty items,” said Gillett. Some of the products that Nutter’s offers include green coffee bean extract, coconut milk and ice cream, probiotics and natural body care products like toothpaste, shampoo and body washes that aren’t full of chemicals.
The staff at Nutter’s say it is a learning experience every day they work because customers come in with questions and product representatives tell them all about what is new. “Most of us have tried or own most of the products in the store. I’m sure we could fix the neighbourhood from our very own pantries,” said MacKenzie. Part of what Gillett said she enjoys most about her job is being able to help customers and having them return saying that what was recommended worked to help whatever ailment they walked in with originally. “If we don’t know the answer we try to find one or refer the customer to someone who can help them,” said Gillett. Nutter’s focuses on smaller centres, meaning there isn’t a store in Calgary or Edmonton. They are also an Alberta based company that began in Medicine Hat. There are now over 28 locations from Manitoba to British Columbia and even one in the United States. The store offers Seniors’ Day Mondays as well as a customer appreciation day on the first Tuesday of each month. Nutter’s caries products for people with gluten, soy, lactose, nut, or other allergies as well as for those looking to improve their overall health. “It’s fun to work here and there is a lot of support from head office as well as other staff,” said Tanya Pasiciel, an employee at Nutter’s.

Red Deer radio personality lands top honour Mike Diesel of Kraze 101.3 FM named Red Deer’s favourite DJ BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express His charisma, funny antics and overall personality have landed Mike Diesel with a top honour in this year’s Best of Red Deer. Diesel, who co-hosts the morning show on Kraze 101.3 FM with Rae and Matt the News, has been named the City’s number one radio DJ in that category. “That is so exciting. It feels amazing. I have been doing radio for 12 years. To leave home and to sacrifice and to feel like you are doing a good job is great. It’s phenomenal,” said Diesel. He said the top honour also validates that he is doing something right.
‘WE GET TO CREATE A SKIT OR A FUNNY AUDIO BIT. I LOVE WHAT I DO. IT’S FUN, IT’S BEING FUNNY. I FEEL LIKE I FOUND WHAT I WAS MEANT TO DO.’ MIKE DIESEL “From time to time you know you are. Listeners tell you that they like what you do. “It’s nice to have an honour like this. Our ratings are really good right now -- we’re number one in the ratings. “So to have that and then this really kind of cements it all together.” He added an ex-girlfriend got him started on the path of his radio career. “I went to business management and I was mediocre at it and I didn’t want to be mediocre. She said ‘You talk a lot, you love to talk and be the centre of attention.’ Two weeks later I was enrolled in school, six months later I had a job in radio and 12 years later I am in Red Deer,” said Diesel. “When you find something you love you stick with it. “We get to create a skit or a funny audio bit. I love what I do. It’s fun, it’s being funny. I feel like I found what I was meant to do.” Before coming to Red Deer, the Surrey, B.C.-native worked at a radio station in Edmonton, but has also worked at radio stations in Drumheller, Cranbrook, Kimberly and Vancouver, B.C. “I’ve always grown up on hiphop and rap and Top 40 music. I’ve worked country and I’ve worked rock. But working at Kraze was a chance to start at a brand new station where you don’t have any baggage and the community was waiting for you to come in. The community seemed to be waiting for Kraze just because there wasn’t really anything like us -not a lot of talk, keeping it fresh
CRAZY KRAZE - MIke Diesel “does his thing” behind the mic for Kraze 101.3 FM in Red Deer. Diesel won gold for the Best of Red Deer in the Favourite Radio DJ category. and keeping it young. “It was a really good opportunity and it was a lot of fun to come down. It was the right place at the right time.” Inspiration for the morning show comes from a wide-range of places, said Diesel. “Every day is probably the best radio source. When you’re talking to people you want to be conversational and relate to them. The hardest part and what most people don’t do is make notes. “If I see something in the grocery store I make a note and email it to myself as a reminder so the next day I can remember what was funny about the frozen section. It’s important to notice every day things and then make note of it. It’s a matter of always thinking. “A lot of what I say is really dumb to be honest with you,” Diesel chuckled adding he is 401 months old (or 33 years). Diesel credits his co-hosts, Rae
Tanis Reid/Red Deer Express
and Matt The News for making the morning show what it is. “There’s just jokes everywhere all morning long. It’s not just me. I wouldn’t be nearly as good without them.” There are various things Diesel said he loves about his job but being out in the community is definitely one of the highlights. “One of the best things we do is the school tour and we go to about six or seven different schools a year. They’ll write us and tell us why they want us to come to their school. “We’ll take the show live from 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. We usually bring Tim Horton’s with us and we’ll feed the whole school. The kids will sit around and take pictures. To affect six schools and 1,800 kids a year is really awesome. “My favourite part is we usually get to sign autographs.” As for what is most challenging about his job, Diesel said other
people’s opinion of you can sometimes be tough. “Not everyone is going to like you and you have to be able to accept that. You are never going to please everybody. You have to be able to step back and ask yourself if you’re on the right path. Do you like what you’re doing and are there people that like what you’re doing? Because if there are then you can tell if you’re on the right path or not. “But it’s the nature of the business.” Although Diesel is a fun-loving guy who lets his personality shine by building plasticine figurines and displaying them proudly on his desk, there is also a serious side to him. Diesel recently developed a clothing brand called Eemoeemu. “We used to do a game on the show where we had a contest where listeners would call in and they would tell us the difference between an emo and an emu. It
was a really easy game and we thought it was kind of fun. That’s where the name stems from.” The shirts are sold in various stores throughout Red Deer and 10% of the proceeds from the sales go towards the Canadian Cancer Society. “We want to help people who maybe need to get into treatment or to help people stay in treatment,” said Diesel. “My mom passed away from cancer three years ago so that was really important to me to be able to use our platform for a good cause too. There’s nothing like the feeling of knowing you’re helping someone.” Reflecting on his top honour from the Best of Red Deer, Diesel said he’s at a loss for words. “It’s just so cool. I feel really humbled. I have this big smile.” In addition, Kraze 101.3 FM was also awarded gold for Best Radio Station in the City. efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Charitable organization lands silver award Opened in 2005, the Red Deer Hospice is a sanctuary for end of life care BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express A vital organization in the community has been honoured. The Red Deer Hospice Society has been awarded silver in the Best Charitable Organization category for Best of Red Deer. The Red Deer Hospice Society opened its facility in 2005. The Red Deer Hospice house has 10 independent rooms, all equipped with their own washroom, sitting area and bed. Each room is unique as the décor is different. The hospice is also equipped with a large bathtub area, television room, children’s playroom and many gathering areas with stone fireplaces. The sanctuary is also a gathering place for church and other events. “Our service to the community is end of life care. The Red Deer Hospice is an alternative to having a family member in a hospital or at home,” said Marian Cloutier, the fund development and marketing coordinator for Red Deer Hospice. “As far as community members helping us out, we receive a portion of our operating expenses from Alberta Health Services. “As a charity we have to raise the remaining money to meet our operating budget. In 2012 we are going to have to raise $600,000 and that’s where our community comes in.”
The cost per bed is about $360 a day and that is why the fundraising is so critical. “We cannot expect family members to pay that. It is not a requirement. Anything that they are able and willing to give us as a donation is wonderful but it’s definitely not something we expect,” said Simone Schumacher, bereavement support coordinator for Red Deer Hospice.
“THE COMMUNITY ALLOWS US TO CONTINUE TO OFFER SERVICES AT NO FEES FOR ALL CENTRAL ALBERTANS NO MATTER WHAT THEIR FINANCIAL STATUS IS.” MARIAN CLOUTIER The Hospice holds a number of events in hopes of garnering funds to operate including this spring’s first annual Celebrity Dance Off, the Hike for Hospice, Fund a Day, Mulligans for Hospice and memorial donations, among others. “We have very good support from the community. We’ve had a couple of years when we have had to dip into the reserves but we are always hopeful that it doesn’t happen,” said Cloutier. “But I think we are very fortunate and I think we have a very loyal support base. The community allows us to continue to offer services at no fees for all Central Alber-
tans no matter what their financial status is.” People also donate their time to the hospice as well. “We have a fantastic force of volunteers here. They can work in-house, they can work on the yards outside and we have a lot of volunteers out in the community helping us out with our fundraising events and of course our board of directors,” said Cloutier. As for their careers, both Cloutier and Schumacher said it is very rewarding to work at the Red Deer Hospice, but it can also be very difficult. “You’re dealing with such a vulnerable event and the reality of our own mortality. It really makes us look like our own relationship with death,” said Schumacher. ed Deer Best of R NER W GOLD IN

“In a society where we don’t talk a lot about death and dying it’s a reprieve for a family where they can come and ask questions and be able to connect around that.” Cloutier added working at the Red Deer Hospice offers her peace, calm and energy. “It’s the residents and their family and the laughter. It’s the smell in the kitchen and the staff here,” she said. “It’s just like a home and we treat each other like family here.” Meanwhile, as for their Best of Red Deer Award Schumacher said it’s validating and exciting that people are aware of the Red Deer Hospice. “I think they see the value that we provide to our community. Our community is behind us,” said Cloutier.

I would like to take this opportunity to first congratulate all of the businesses, citizens and organizations that have been voted the best in Red Deer. Being voted the best is a testament to the hard work and dedication to customer service that our local businesses and their staff put forth every day. Also, a big thank you to all of our dedicated readers that took the time to vote either by entering their printed newspaper ballot or through our online survey. This is my second year being involved in the Best of Red Deer and once again it amazes me how many people are involved in the voting process. It really shows that people appreciate when a business or service goes above and beyond in customer service. The Red Deer Express prides itself on being Red Deer’s community paper and as such we try our best to keep the people of Red Deer aware of what is going on in our community. However, the printing of the Best of Red Deer would not be possible without the winning businesses, citizens and organizations that have participated in this annual special feature. Every week when the Express is delivered to your door it is because of the businesses in Red Deer that support our publication and our community. Red Deer has grown and flourished so much that in 2010 the Express decided there was a need to print a separate feature that focused squarely on all aspects of food and restaurants. The Golden Fork Awards is the counterpart to the Best of Red Deer for foodies. Watch for the Golden Fork ballots printed in the Express as well as our online survey in August. Meanwhile, for the businesses, citizens and organizations that have placed in Best of Red Deer 2012, our warmest congratulations. You all deserve the recognition and we encourage you to keep up the great work and continue to make our City one of the best.

Rob Rae Clothiers a fixture in downtown Red Deer BY KIRSTEN PALARDY Red Deer Express Rob Rae Clothiers provides a broad range of styles and brand names from formal wear and dress clothing to casual and made-to-measure menswear. Red Deerians voted Rob Rae Clothiers as this year’s bronze winner for Best Men’s Clothing Store in the Best of Red Deer. “We are honoured and it really does go to show that hard work pays off. We are very excited about the lines that we carry, there is good value there and that is what we sell,” said owner Tim Snell. Some of the brands carried in the store include Hugo Boss, John Varvatos, Coppley, Robert Graham, Eton, Alberto, G-Star and Canada Goose. “Canada Goose is a clothing line and suits a broader base customer while Coppley is a line of classic men’s tailored suits and made-to-measure suits for the hard to fit or individual with a flare for personalized styling.”
Snell and his family took over operations of the store in 1993 but the company has been a fixture in the City since 1969. “We cater to all age groups with a flare for fashion and pride ourselves on personalized service and an attention to detail.” He said in today’s age of big box stores and malls that Rob Rae Clothiers is a throw back to men’s wear individual stores. Snell has also taken the time to keep involved in the community through donations to charities including the Rotary Club and many different golf tournament fundraisers. “When you work in a community it’s nice to be involved. It’s the community that has supported us for 43 years so we like to give back,” said Snell. He said the individual feel and nature of the store hasn’t changed but that the lines have changed with the clientele. “We are now seeing our second generation of customers and we have Red Deerians who move away and still call us for a suit
because this is where they feel comfortable,” said Snell. One thing that is unique to Rob Rae is that they keep a client’s measurements on file so they can phone in and order items without needing a fitting each time they need another shirt, jacket or pair of pants. “We have a unique service that we offer because we are local residents, we live in and understand the local Red Deer market. I know most of our clients on a first name basis.” With their location on Little Gaetz downtown, Snell is finding that they do get a little bit more foot traffic and that word of mouth has garnered them new clientele in the past few years. He said they are committed to bringing exciting men’s wear fashions and impeccable service to Red Deer and Central Alberta. “As we aspire to be the premier men’s wear store in Central Alberta, we recognize our staff and loyal customer base for our present and future success.”
T
o have a group of Clients, Friends and Family that would take the Ɵme to consider my service to my industry and my community in this manner....it truly is humbling and I wish to thank each and every one of you.

Tiny Tots Playschool important stepping stone for children BY KIRSTEN PALARDY Red Deer Express Parents value educational facilities, and Tiny Tots Playschool is no exception as is evident by their gold win in this year’s Best of Red Deer. Tiny Tots won gold for Best Day Care this year and while they are technically a playschool, Marla Newton, a teacher there, said it is understandable that they be voted for as a daycare because parents see them as a child-minding facility. Programs at Tiny Tots run for two hours in the morning or in the afternoon during which time children are taught social skills, coordination and motor skills, language skills and much more. “The programs have changed over the years and evolved with the children and parents that come through,” said Newton. Tiny Tots has been around since 1978 and strives to provide the best early childcare services possible to all children. The facility is also wheelchair accessible and Newton explained that the programs are all inclusive and that the staff will adapt the programming to children with any and all requirements. “We work with the school boards and Aspire and they bring their kids here with support to attend our programs. We try not to change the programming for the children, but just make it more accessible.” Being the end of the year for the programs at Tiny Tots, parents were invited to make comments about the things they enjoy about the playschool.
One quote from parents said they felt that the playschool was a great transition into kindergarten and another said they have had three children go through and they love the program and trust the staff. “We like the fact that they’re learning social skills and how to play together. We value the patience and caring nature of the teachers,” said another parent. Tiny Tots Playschool sees children ages three and four for one or two years before starting Kindergarten. Sally Tettmar, president of the Red Deer Tiny Tots Playschool Society, said it is important to note that it is not a substitute for kindergarten and that it is not a full time day care facility. “It’s just a stepping stone. Imagine being a little kid who’s only ever been in a group of four children with one or two adults; this is how they learn how to work in a classroom of kids with one or two teachers,” said Tettmar. Newton said part of developing children as a whole is understanding and knowing their family. “We support the child by getting to know his or her family so we know what’s going on and what’s coming through the door at times.” She went on to explain that parents are always welcome to ask questions about what types of activities and disciplinary tactics are age-appropriate for their child. Tiny Tots is also proud of the parental support that they receive when they go on field trips including a nature walk in the fall, trips to the library and getting the children involved with the Christmas
Thanks Red Deer!
Bureau. “The children save their pennies through the months of November and December and then we take them to Toys R Us to buy toys for children less fortunate than themselves,” said Newton. Newton said the staff at Tiny Tots Play-
school are honoured to have been recognized by the public as a great place to send their children and that they plan to continue providing quality care to the community. kpalardy@reddeerexpress.com

Spray Tanning At the Bronze Zone Tanning Company our goal is to provide you with a refreshingly positive tanning experience with the best possible service, and equipment in a trendy, relaxing environment. Eight years ago, the Bronze Zone was opened in the Easthill Centre with a well thought out plan different from any other tanning salon in Red Deer. It was such a huge success that the need for a second location was very evident. The second Bronze Zone opened December of 2006 in the new Taylor Plaza. The success of the salons has been attributed to many factors that set the Bronze Zone apart from it’s competition. Such differences are things like the Convenience

Local photographer captures magical family moments BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Local photographer Deanna Hall likes nothing better than capturing magical moments with families and kids, preferably in a natural, outdoor setting. Hall landed silver in the Best Photographer category in this year’s Best of Red Deer. “I was completely floored by it,” she said of learning the news of the recognition. A desire to truly pursue photography was sparked with the arrival of her own children, she explains. She became interested in digital scrapbooking and came to realize the potential of what she could capture via the art of photography. She upgraded her equipment and her natural ability to capture an array of images shone. Friends and family continually encouraged her to move forward and share her growing skills more widely. She took several courses in refining her craft, and
ultimately the demand for what she had to offer just took off from there. Deanna Hall Photography marks its seventh year this autumn. “I was also excited about the opportunity of being my own boss and setting my own hours,” she said. And with three young children, the concept of launching her own business, and the flexibility
‘MY FAVOURITE TYPES OF SESSIONS ARE WITH CHILDREN AND FAMILIES.’ DEANNA HALL that would provide, was that much more exhilarating. For Hall, it’s all about creating very special and unique moments and settings for her clients. As her web site points out, the beauty of custom photography is in the choices and in the luxury of those options. “My favourite types of sessions are with children and families,” she said. “I
just absolutely love them. And I rarely shoot inside.” Studio lighting and sets are certainly an option, but the natural beauty of the outdoors provides the ideal backdrop. It lends itself to a fresh, vibrant realism that is consistently reflected in her photography. “I also prefer outside and the natural light. Kids are kids when they are outside,” she said. It’s more of a challenge nailing that perfect moment within a defined studio space. “They need to run and they need to have fun.” Hall also shoots weddings, although she only takes on a few each year. “Because I only have (a few), I can be extra super creative. “I’m not taking different brides and grooms to the same location every weekend doing the same photos. I can really tailor my weddings to the specific client because I only do a select few.” She is also involved with a non-profit organization called Now I Lay Me Down

to Sleep. The organization’s mission is to introduce remembrance photography to parents suffering the loss of a baby with the gift of professional portraiture. Hall finds it a meaningful way of helping families through the grieving process. She’d also like to see more local photographers available for those types of sessions. It’s a truly moving experience to be part of, and a gift to be able to provide families in these situations with photos to commemorate their child, she said. Ultimately, among the most fulfilling moments of her career are seeing the expressions on the faces of her happy clients when they see the finished product. “When I deliver a custom-designed album, I will stand there because I’m so excited about this book I’m wanting them to open it so I can see the looks on their faces when they go through it. “I’m totally blessed.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Best in live entertainment at The Vat BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Offering a slate of topnotch bands both emerging and well-established, The Vat has again landed gold in the Best Live Music category of this year’s Best of Red Deer awards. Virtually no musical genre is ignored at the popular pub, from classic rock, simmering blues, straightforward pop, country and hip hop to jazz, ska, reggae and a spectrum of other styles. Patrons certainly like it that way, and business has been on the increase year by year since Terry Cave and fellow co-owner and musician Duke Thompson set up shop in the late 1990s. The Vat is located at #101, 5301 – 43 St. Thompson and Cave established the business when Cave returned to Red Deer after living in Vancouver for a 10-year stint. Cave said the success of The Vat boils down to the steady stream of customers who find the comfortable
environment a great place to relax. “Our clientele is very diverse,” he explains, noting that folks popping by for a drink, a meal or a concert range in age from around 18 to those in their 80s. That reflects The Vat’s dedication to mixing it up when it comes to selecting who performs there, he said. “It’s good for Red Deer, and it shows that we don’t play the same genre of music all of the time.” He’s also excited to see a tremendous showing of local talent who utilize The Vat to showcase their flourishing skills. “The local talent is incredible,” he added, noting that there is an increasing number of bands on the home front looking to connect to local audiences. Of course, bigger names like The Payolas and Wide Mouth Mason have also hit the stage there over the years as well. There had been a previous pub called The Vat on the same site which had closed, but the guys knew it was a great location to keep
the tradition moving ahead under their ownership. The Vat is indeed aptly named – it used to house five huge beer vats as part of the old Carlings Brewery many years ago. These days, there’s a continued emphasis on keeping The Vat an inviting and attractive location – new sound and lighting systems have been installed, said Cave. Their menu items are also proving a continued hit with folks as well, particularly the scrumptious lasagna, he points out. “There’s people who come here just for the lasagna. It’s a big kicker around here.” For Cave, running a place like The Vat is pretty much the best job a guy could have. And the joy he garners from his job comes primarily from the patrons. “There are lots of good people who stop by and share stories. They are the ones who help everyone else feel good about coming here too.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

Hot yoga a popular feature at The Amaryllis Centre BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Continuing to garner a loyal following of clients, The Amaryllis Centre Inc. has landed silver for Best Yoga Studio in this year’s Best of Red Deer. “The Amaryllis Centre was opened by my family three years ago,” explained owner Shauna Clark. “It was replicated from our sister studio which is in Cochrane.” Clark and her sister are yoga instructors, and it’s been a passion for several years. It’s also been a bit of a family venture, as their mother was a natural practitoner focusing on Body Talk and Electro Acupuncture. Another new building block – Darcy Schneider is coming onboard as a partner in the business. “Our goal was to provide a welcoming environment where people would feel safe and comfortable to heal and/or find tools to create a balanced lifestyle,” said Clark. “We currently are also excited to introduce Red Deer Hot Yoga as our new title and we are looking forward to making some exciting changes and growth within our studio and our community in the next few months.”
Clark said Red Deer Hot Yoga is a very unique yoga studio. “Independently owned and operated we have highly certified instructors that focus on not only stretching but many of our classes also integrate strengthening. With the most variety of hot yoga classes Central Alberta has, we truly try to offer a class for everyone. From a strengthening Hot Power Flow class to warm and relaxing Yin Yoga -- everyone is welcome.” Clark said their classes range in temperatures from 35C to 42C. The majority of classes are set at 40C with 40% humidity. “With the combination of heat and movement the body’s lymphatic system moves toxins quickly through to be filtered. Hot yoga is not only one of the best ways to detoxify the body, it is also one of the fastest and healthiest ways to find mental clarity, emotional balance and become physically fit.” Clark said clients love the studio for the variety in instruction and the balance and creativity that is offered. “Also the warmth and friendliness of our staff and environment creates a community that everyone that walks through our doors feels a part of. The only
people that we do not recommend for our hot classes are pregnant women, children under the age of 11 or persons with high blood pressure or heart problems.” Clark started practicing yoga on the beaches of Palau and was immediately hooked. “My life has transformed so much since I started practicing; physically and emotionally I have become a very strong person and a very positive person,” she said. “I now teach because I receive so many benefits from the practice and I also love seeing transformations within my students. “My awareness has gifted me with more optimism and ability to see opportunity around every corner and that is priceless.” For those who would like to give it a try but feel a bit wary, Clark said stepping out of comfort zones gives the opportunity to see how one may react to challenge. The Centre offers classes seven days a week and they also have Red Deer’s first Hot Yoga Teacher training program coming up in the fall. “There are hundreds of styles and thousands of poses so boredom will never be a problem as there is always an opportunity to grow physically and mentally.” editor@reddeerexpress.com

GOLDEN FORK AWARDS
In 2010, staff at the Red Deer Express decided that honouring the best eateries and food providers should stand alone rather than be a part of the Best of Red Deer feature, hence the inception of the Golden Fork Awards. “From the start, the concept for the Golden Fork Awards really clicked with our readers,” said Tracey Scheveers, Express publisher. “People are passionate about their favourite eateries and also want to spread the word about everything from superb service to the finest specialty locales. Having it all in a separate feature gives us the opportunity to showcase these businesses in a stronger light.” Best of Red Deer highlights the best in everything from retail, services, recreation and the most outstanding local citizens while the Golden Fork Awards name the best in anything to do with the fascinating world of food. Categories run the gamut from the finest in appetizers, breakfast and brunch to the best in pizza, sushi and Greek eateries. Readers can also vote for their favourite bakery or health food store and their pick for the best provider of organic food. There are also categories for friendliest staff, best pub/lounge, best patio
and best waiter/waitress. Golden Fork winners will be announced in the special feature inserted in the Sept. 26 issue of the Red Deer Express. Scheveers and the Express staff are grateful for those who took time to vote in the Best of Red Deer, and encourage readers to once again put forward their choices for who should be honoured via the Golden Fork Awards. “It’s wonderful to see the enthusiasm around the Best of Red Deer Awards,” she said. “Golden Fork is catching up, and our aim is to only broaden its scope down the road as Red Deer becomes a more diverse and larger community. “We would also like to thank the thousands of people that voted for their favourite businesses in the Best of Red Deer,” she said. From these thousands of ballots cast for Best of Red Deer, one lucky name is drawn. This year, Amanda M. won a $500 gift certificate to Parkland Mall. For the Golden Fork Awards, the voter drawn from the ballots cast takes home $250 worth of gift certificates donated by several of the winning restaurants. “Those of you that missed voting for your favourites are encouraged to watch for Best of Red Deer 2013.”

Paul Harris eases into role as City councillor BY ERIN FAWCETT Red Deer Express Elected to council in 2010, one of the City’s newest councillors has been honoured in the Best of Red Deer. Paul Harris garnered silver for Favourite City Councillor in this year’s awards. “It’s pretty neat (to get this award) actually,” said Harris. “It certainly feels like I am going in the right direction.” Harris, 49, was born in Calgary and moved to Red Deer in 1990. In 1997, he opened Sunworks in downtown Red Deer with Terry Warke. “When I first came to Red Deer I started doing community work right away. Then I worked on the Culture Master Plan in 2001 as a committee member and before that the Writer’s Guild of Alberta and the Museum Shop Society. It wasn’t too many years later after we moved our store into this location that people started asking when I was going to run for council. “Each time an election has come up I have wondered if it was the year and waffled.” All-around community change sparked the interest in politics for Harris. “You could see urban sprawl starting to happen, you could see the environmental issues were happening. “People were unhappy and people’s sense of belonging was at risk. There was a whole bunch of things and I thought we could do better than what we were currently doing.”
Diving into council in 2010 was a tough task and the steep learning curve can often be overwhelming but Harris has eased right into his role. “It’s been very good to work with a number of my councillor colleagues and also to work with administration and staff. We have a brilliant group of people at the City. I think they are taking some more educated risks and trying new things. The Ross Street experiment is an example of that. “The ability to effect change is really something that is fulfilling.” Some of the biggest issues Harris is most passionate include having a community where the economy functions well. “It comes from my business background and I feel very strongly that we can’t borrow from the future to fund the present,” he said. “We have to think about what resources we have in the community that we could use better.” Another issue Harris is passionate about is arts and culture. “When you look at culture in Red Deer, one of our main values is our green space and trails. The way we work together in a leadership capacity is another value and that’s a cultural value. We really value people coming from different walks of life. Arts is a reflection of those things. It’s interesting to see the arts community grow in Red Deer and it continues to get better.” Looking ahead Harris said he plans to run again in the next municipal election which will be held in the fall of 2013. efawcett@reddeerexpress.com
