While the majority of participants at classic car shows are typically male, Sandra Walton proves the Langley Good Times Cruise-In is not just another boys’ club. The 66-year-old New Westminster woman will be steering the wheel of her own classic vehicle to the annual event—a haven for hot rod and classic car buffs of all ages and genders. “I guess you could call me a bit of a tomboy,” joked the retired administrative assistant, who has been bringing her baby Annie, a

Declared one of the most aerodynamic cars ever made when it was released, her pride and joy was voted Motor Trend magazine’s car of the year. Just last month, Annie won first place in the 1980s restored and/or original category out of 455 cars at Westcoasters Daze Show ‘n’ Shine in White Rock. Fellow car buffs are often surprised to learn that Annie belongs to Walton and not her husband or boyfriend, she said. “Most of the women at the Cruise-In are there with their spouses, I’m one of the very few single ladies who show up alone. I get asked all the time whether it’s my car.” But that doesn’t mean she is the odd woman out. “I fit right in,” said Walton

matter-of-factly. “I’ve met so many great people there over the years. If they want to treat me like one of the boys, well that’s just fine with me.” Walton was raised on a farm in Truro, N.S., where she became a fan of cars at a young age. “I was likely to be found playing with toy cars, rather than dolls,” she said. “My cousins and I would spend hours just sitting around and naming all the cars that drove by on the farm roads: the Chevys, the Fords and the Chryslers—by grade school I knew almost every car on the road.” please see Cruise-in, A9

There should be a few more students walking through the doors of New Westminster schools this week. The district is projecting its kindergarten to Grade 12 total enrollment to be 5,977, giving New West an increase of about 50 students from September 2011. New Westminster and Surrey are two districts with increasing enrolment which bucks the trend of declining student population in much of the rest of the province. District figures project enrolment at 2,974 for elementary, which is up 106 from September 2011. It’s expected 874 will be in New West’s middle schools, Glenbrook and Queensborough, which is 30 more than last year. New Westminster secondary and other district secondary programs are projected to have 2,129 students. please see City, A3

That is a drop of 100 from September 2011. The district expects to have 270 students in its home learners programs, a drop of seven, and 164 in international education, which is 17 less than 2011. “We’re looking forward to a very positive and productive year ahead. We’ve got a lot of projects on the go, said district superintendent John Woudzia. Unlike last September when the school year began with labour unrest that didn’t end until a two-year deal was reached in June, there will be some certainty to the district’s dayto-day operations between district officials and administrators, and teachers. “We’re just looking forward to a real positive and exciting relationship, said Woudzia.

City agrees to deal City council has approved an agreement with Onni Group to split the cost of building 12 parking spots on city property for its proposed rental housing development. Council previously objected to Onni’s proposal to provide less parking for the residents of the complex, which will have 100 nonmarket rental and 85 market rental units, than the city’s guidelines require. The spots are expected to cost $76,000 with Onni and the city each agreeing to pay half. “That was a good resolve, said Coun. Bill Harper. He also said the city will pursue the issue of nonresidents parking in the area and then going to work at Queen’s Park Lodge. He suggested some sort of sticker program for local residents’ vehicles to be identified might have to be explored. Although Onni had suggested renters typically own fewer vehicles than condominium owners, Harper said that’s unlikely to be the case unless Victoria Hill can be guaranteed bus service in the neighbourhood at all times of the day.

The district hopes it will finally be able to put a shovel in the ground for the new elementary school on the old St. Mary’s Hospital site. Three firms were recently shortlisted for the design-build process. “We’re very excited about the progress being made, said Woudzia. “Once that gets underway we’ll turn our sights to the middle school at [the site of the current John Robson elementary]. We’re looking forward to substantial progress being made on our capital projects. Finally, we’re getting down to some business. “We’re hopeful the high school this year will get formal approval from the government. Once we demonstrate we’re underway with those two schools (St. Mary’s and Robson) then hopefully we can go back to Victoria for that.

Looking to expand Quay concerts grant granger

ggranger@newwestnewsleader.com

The Hyack Festival Association is looking to at least double the number of Concerts on the Quay in 2013 after a successful debut this year. The association put on two concerts, Aug. 12 and 26, on the boardwalk. Executive director Douglas Smith said the spectators doubled for the second event compared to the first. “I tried not to set any expectations, said Smith. “It was very clear there was good word of mouth the second time around. So I think that augurs well for the future. He said it would be realistic for the association to expand to four or six concerts next year, and instead of all of them on Sundays (2 to 5 p.m.) they might experiment with Saturday evenings. The association is also contemplating the viability of doing one of the concerts at Westminster Pier Park, although access is a bit of an issue at this point, said Smith. The first concert featured Dustin Bentall and Kendel Carson, and Warren Dean Flandez, while the Aug. 26 show was headlined by Steve Dawson with David (Boxcar) Gates also performing. “All in all it went well, said Smith. “In terms of the production and execution everything went well. We had two really nice days. The music

was fabulous, I think people were blown away by the quality of the entertainment. Maybe they haven’t seen that kind of quality of professional musicians in the community. “The reaction from the community is ‘holy mackerel thank you very much.’

Smith said it was “pretty cool to be able to provide high-calibre entertainment at no cost to the spectators. “It really is in alignment in what we’re trying to achieve and that’s present events that appeal to everyone in our city and our region, and give people that might not normally come to the boardwalk something of quality and to showcase our community.

NEWSLEADER’S VIEW:

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: LAST WEEK:

Peace, please in public schools After a 2011/12 school year fraught with tension and concern, the coming one will be a blessing. Thousands of students (about 6,000 in New Westminster) headed back to school on Tuesday, some to new classrooms, some to new schools with new principals and new teachers. But with the current public school teachers’ collective agreement due to expire in less than a year, some old issues will continue to plague the education system. The BC Teachers’ Federation said it only signed the deal under the threat of legislation and there is a concern some teachers will be returning to the classroom bitter and demoralized. It’s possible some will even continue to refrain from doing volunteer duties while others may simply jump back into school activities with enthusiasm. Let’s hope a year of relative calm will provide new optimism and a sense of purpose as the school year begins — for teachers as well as students. – Black Press

Separating oil from manure

I

was as surprised as anyone to hear about the plan by this newspaper’s owner, David Black, to begin regulatory work on an oil refinery for Kitimat. I’ll leave it to others to comment on the practicality of that plan, and whether it would make the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline project more acceptable to B.C.’s government and population. Black Press news coverage, columns, letters to the editor and other reader comments are not affected by this project, and there has been a range of views expressed already. Whatever the merits of the refinery idea, it has advanced the debate over pipelines and the place of oil in our society. And that’s a good thing, because as someone with a basic knowledge of chemistry and some experience in oil refining, I have noticed a lot of ignorance about the subject. Today I’d like to address some of the main misconceptions, which have been exploited by some opponents. The first one is oil pollution in general and how it gets into the environment.

NEW WESTMINSTER

Tom Fletcher tfletcher@blackpress.ca

A global study by the Smithsonian Institution in 1995 calculated the amount of oil making its way into oceans this way: Big tanker spills accounted for 37 million gallons a year, about five per cent of the total marine oil pollution identified. By far the largest source was oil runoff from land into drains, from oil changes, municipal and industrial wastes and other sources: 363 million gallons. Bilge cleaning and other routine ship maintenance added 137 million gallons, four times the tanker spill average. Air pollution from vehicles and industry deposited hydrocarbon particles equal to another 97 million gallons; natural seeps added 62 million gallons; offshore drilling discharges accounted for 15 million gallons. So that’s the first thing to

understand. It’s not tankers and pipelines doing most of the polluting. It’s you and me. Then there is the propaganda about greenhouse gas emissions from the oil sands crude. Actor Robert Redford is one of the highest-profile pitchmen for the false notion that “tar sands” oil generates three times the greenhouse gases as conventional oil. The facts are clear. The most widely cited source is a graph prepared by Cambridge Energy Research Associates, which shows 75 per cent of greenhouse gases from all types of crude occur when the gasoline, jet fuel and diesel are burned by the end user. Yes, there are variations in emissions on the remaining quarter. Emissions from mined oil sands crude are slightly higher than steam extraction, which is slightly higher than conventionally drilled and pumped crude. The most greenhouse gas-intensive crude used in North America is California heavy crude, which is conventionally drilled. Burning coal produces far more greenhouse gases than oil,

as University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver has calculated. Two U.S. environmental groups, including the one fronted by Redford, have lately been promoting a study that suggests oil sands crude is more corrosive to pipelines. False, says the industry, showing analysis of pipes that have carried diluted bitumen for decades. The Trans-Mountain pipeline has been carrying crude from Alberta to Burnaby and Washington state for more than 60 years. It has periodically carried heavy crude for 40 years, and diluted bitumen for 25 years. Some of that crude is refined in Washington and the gasoline and diesel barged up to supply B.C. gas stations. And of course Vancouver Island, Haida Gwaii and all other B.C. islands depend on marine fuel shipments. And let’s not forget the most common heavy oil used in B.C. It’s called asphalt. City settlement with CUPE ‘an outrage’ Re: CUPE 6.75 per cent wage hike This is an outrage and a slap in the face to all GVRD taxpayers, because the slimy New West deal means all local cities will be forced to adhere to the hike. Coun. Bill Harper and CUPE business agent George Habib: It’s so easy to spend other people’s money, isn’t it? After you lot gave New West city workers who are forced to be CUPE members a 17 per cent raise a few years back, you add more now when most taxpaying families are struggling? Pray tell, how much is the raise going to cost in real dollar terms and how much will that raise taxes? Please add on the amount for the $59 million you stole to go into the office building business. We are fed up. Why do we need unions at government offices, including city hall? Do paper pushers have safety issues? Can we not trust the government to be fair? Why do we need to pay more bureaucrats to find more ways to tax us? New West city government is also screwing local biz with heavy taxes, regulations and parking meters—how many folks shop local when they have to pay $1.35 an hour to stroll about? Fed up with you killing local biz and local lifestyles. Jettie Gorgon New Westminster

Editorial missEs point Your “view” of Aug. 29 cross border shopping missed the point. The total taxation is on citizens in B.C. It is now

so out of control and so abusive that we all have to scramble to simply save and survive on what most of us (excluding public sector employees) who are on fixed incomes (and thankful to even have jobs, or who are retired and have worked our 40 to 50 years) have to be realistic, to money in and money out, have to deal with daily, monthly and maybe forever. It is time for a political party to not tell us they will simply not curtail expenses, but also tell us their objective is to brag about cutting costs annually. When Finance Minister Kevin Falcon tells us he did not pay attention to ICBC because they did not raise rates “all that much,” I shudder to think that he or the rest of our elected government could be that stupid, at their pay rate, to use that as an excuse. All of a sudden (since ICBC was started in 1973) they noticed some financial abuse! Give me a break! Tell me that last year “we” reduced cost of running the government in every department by increasing efficiencies and you will get my vote forever, regardless of which party you are! So, while I can’t support the total unionized NDP turnabout, I will look forward to some party telling us that they “get it.” We are really tired of just the same old B.S. and it really is time for a big time change, don’t you all think? And finally, when the candidates talk, please, please, give us a “yes or no answer,” not a “well, you know, that is blah, blah, blah.” Bill Davis New Westminster

confirmed they will serve out their current terms until the election set for May 2013. Premier Christy Clark issued a statement praising all three retiring MLAs. Commenting on Falcon’s decision Wednesday, Clark downplayed the departures and said the turnover offers a chance for renewal. NDP leader Adrian Dix contrasted the departure of former leadership candidates Abbott and Falcon with his team, where his leadership rivals Mike Farnworth and John Horgan are staying on along with former leader Carole James. Dix agreed with Abbott’s assessment that Clark is a great campaigner, but added that doesn’t change the fact the main government initiative since the 2009 election is the rejected harmonized sales tax. “What B.C. needs is a better government, not a better campaigner,” Dix said.

Shuswap MLA George Abbott has confirmed he is following his fellow B.C. Liberal leadership contender Kevin Falcon into political retirement. Chilliwack MLA John Les also announced Thursday that he will not run in the 2013 election, and Children and Family Development Minister Mary McNeil released a statement saying she has made the same decision. Falcon, the three-term MLA for SurreyCloverdale, resigned as finance minister Wednesday. Premier Christy Clark said all MLAs have been asked to declare their intentions by the end of the summer, and she will unveil a cabinet shuffle next week. Abbott said he expects to be dropped from cabinet as the B.C. Liberal election team is assembled, but he plans to continue to work on the election platform as he serves out his fourth The New Westminster term as MLA. With a total of 33 years in elected office at the local and provincial level, and at age 59, Abbott said he will not be making any comebacks in the future. Abbott served as health and aboriginal relations minister and is currently education minister. McNeil, elected MLA for VancouverFalse Creek in 2009, was appointed to the children’s ministry by Clark last year. Les issued a statement from his constituency office, saying it was a difficult decision to leave a political career that started as a Chilliwack councillor in 1983 and four terms as a B.C. Liberal MLA. A former public safety minister, Les has most recently served as parliamentary secretary to the premier. “I trust I have been able to represent the people of Chilliwack well and hope they will forgive any shortcomings on my part,” Les said. Hyacks hopes high for upcoming season Grant Granger

ggranger@newwestnewsleader.com

Farhan Lalji is having visions of deja vu. If that turns out to become a reality and not a delusion, he’ll be a happy head coach of the New Westminster Hyacks football team. The Hyacks will play their home opener against the Abbotsford Collegiate Panthers at Mercer Stadium on Friday (7:30 p.m.). The Hyacks head into the 2012 season looking a lot like the 2007 squad in Lalji’s mind. That team was coming off an awful year in 2006 with little expectation, and it came out of nowhere to go all the way to the provincial semifinals. alan waRdle/cOnTRibuTRed PhOTO This year’s edition is Stewart Sommerfeld of the New Westminster Hyacks catches a pass during a pre-season practice game against Abbotsford’s Rick Hansen Hurricanes. coming off two subpar seasons (4-7 overall in 2011 and 3-8 in 2010). Like 2007, said Lalji, the Hyacks don’t have any a limb because “I don’t know if the competition glaring weaknesses at any position. Hyacks head into 10th season

Rep Softball

Farhan Lalji remembers the first game he coached the New Westminster Hyacks they scored a touchdown on their first drive. “It was the neatest of moments,” said Lalji. “It was the only one we scored in that game, but it was quite the moment to score.” The 2012 season will be the 10th campaign for the New Westminster Hyacks since Lalji resurrected a program that had been dormant since the 1970s.

Tryouts Final Tryout This Sunday September 9th At Mundy Park O’Connor Field, Coquitlam Visit our website for times & age groups. Or contact rep@coquitlamsoftball.com for further information.

www.coquitlamsoftball.com

Lalji remembers 115 kids showing up at the first meeting, and most didn’t play any other sport which made it a strong selling point for the school and the district, both of which got behind his project. Since then, the Hyack program has produced 23 players that have gone on to play university level football. It’s also helped to mould many a young man as they prepared to tackle life instead of running

backs. “I’m happy with the support of the community and the number of kids we’ve been able to impact with their lives,” said Lalji, who moved to New West along with assistants Ryan Leslie and Chad Oatway. “We’ve all made homes and built our relationships and built our families here. It’s been kind of neat to see how our lives have evolved.” ggranger@newwestnewsleader.com

Rising expectations for Robertson ⫸

continued from page a11

Quarterback Tommy Robertson had a strong season in 2011 as a Grade 10 forced into a starting role due to injuries, throwing for 337 yards in five games and four touchdown passes. He also scored six TDs himself. “He showed a lot last year, but can he be that guy all the time. As a Grade 10 last year he was playing with house money,” said Lalji. “We have faith in Tommy after he filled in when [last year’s starting QB Regan Eberding] was hurt, but now there’s expectations.” The Hyacks line depth is so good, said Lalji, senior Jordan Chin will be the only one playing

on both sides of the ball. He is also looking for good things from defensive lineman Sonu Kainth, who is 6-foot-6 and 245 pounds, and defensive back Tristan Sands. “There’s a lot of pieces there that we’re quite encouraged about,” Lalji said. Much of the Hyacks fortunes, said Lalji, rest with a handful of players who will need to live up to the roles given them by the coaching staff. • The Hyacks’ annual homecoming game will be against the Carson Graham Eagles on Friday, Sept. 14, 7:30 p.m. Other home games are Oct. 5 (Centennial), Oct. 19 (Vancouver College), and Nov. 2 (Mt. Douglas).
