Features Extra Extra large rear & side window, separate front bedroom c/w walkaround Queen Bed, U-shaped dinette booth (optional)
During a fall inspection of the home, as you prepare for winter, don’t forget to take a good look at the roof of your home. This is especially true if you live in an area that usually receives a lot of snow, because your roof will have to support all that weight during the winter months.

The simplest and safest way to carry out an initial, basic inspection of a roof is to use binoculars, unless of course you have a flat roof. This will allow you to check for loose shingles or tiles that you can climb up and fix securely with nails or glue. Be sure to hammer down any nails that are sticking up, as they could cause water infiltrations.
$53.88 bi-weekly payment OAC!
A thorough inspection of a roof also includes checking it from the inside. This will have to be done from the attic. Check carefully to ensure that the roof has not started sinking between the rafters. Can you see any daylight filtering through anywhere? That is a sure sign that something is wrong!
*Applicable Taxes extra, Freight & Pre-Delivery inspection included. Bi-weekly pmt calculated on $15668.80 balance to finance based on tax included (12%HST) and RBC financing OAC at 6.49% 60 month term/240 amortization. cost of borrowing $4,756.91for 60months balance due $13,421.31
If you see any dark stains on the wood, they are likely the result of a water infiltration. The problem is relatively new if the stain is still damp and if you can pierce the wood fairly easily with a screwdriver. If this is not the case, the problem must have occurred in the past and been repaired. If you have any concerns, do not hesitate to call a professional to come and inspect the roof. It goes without saying that any repair jobs should be done properly and quickly to prevent any further damage.

The sad moment has come
Closing up the cottage for winter Whether you want to or you have to, fall is usually the time to close down the cottage for the winter. Holiday weekends are spent in town, and a busy fall family schedule means you won’t have much time to escape to the country any more. Here is a list to help you remember all the things that need to be done before hanging up the cottage key for the winter. First of all, take the time to clean and store all the outdoor furniture, lawnmower, bikes, and any gardening equipment. If you own some kind of watercraft, find out from the manufacturer if they need any special type
of maintenance before they are put into winter storage.
Winterizing your barbecue
Lots of jobs have to be done inside the cottage as well. Empty the fridge and if your cottage is in the woods, ensure that you don’t leave any traces of food for mice to be drawn to. Unplug the fridge and clean it thoroughly, leaving the door ajar. Remove and wash the bedding and then store it in a dry place, such as in plastic storage bins.
Unless you have a natural gas barbecue that is connected directly to your home’s fuel supply, the chilly days of late fall signal the end of outdoor cooking. It is also the time to winterize your barbecue properly in order to prolong its life and look.
Lower the heating enough to maintain a minimum temperature of at least 5°C to prevent pipes from freezing. If you live in an area with severe winters, pour about half a litre of plumbing anti-freeze down the drain pipes. Turn off the cottage’s water supply and then the electricity to the water heater. This should then be emptied using a hosepipe connected to the purge control valve. Empty all the other water pipes by opening the taps fully. After that, all you’ll have to do is purge the water pump. Winterizing a cottage properly is essential for a worry-free return in the spring.
Of all the different components, the grill is the one that deserves the most attention. Removing all traces of food is essential, especially after you have finished cooking the last meal. This is above all a question of hygiene. Use some steel wool or a metal brush with soapy water for cast iron grills. More expensive barbecues are often equipped with stainless steel grills which should be cleaned with a cloth, mild soap, and hot water. If you don’t want to go to a lot of trouble, do a self-clean by turning the burners on high and letting all food residues burn off. The next item to clean is the rubber pipe that connects the valve of the propane tank to the burners. Brushes
that have been designed for this job are available at specialized retailers. On the outside of the barbecue, use linseed oil to get rid of any rust on the cover. When all rust is removed, it can be repainted with a heat resistant paint. This retouching not only improves the look of your barbecue, it will also prevent rust from reappearing over the winter while the barbecue is in storage.
Removing all traces of food is essential, especially after you have finished cooking the last meal.

The 2012 grandparent-grandchild knowledge summit September 9 is Grandparents’ Day, a time to be thankful for the important role grandmothers and grandfathers play in the fami ly structure. Your children might know their grandparents mostly as babysitters or, perhaps, as distant figures who live quietly. They might not know that Gran and Gramps or Oma and Opa or Nana and Nonny are wicked story tellers or former whizzes at cards! Why not arrange a know ledge sum mit for Grandparents’ Day where these talents can be appreciated and passed on for posterity.
Invite grandparents to share a long-lost talent or trick they’ve kept hidden up their sleeve. Was Grammy known for her graceful swan dive in her younger days? Maybe a trip to the pool will result in a demonstration. Was Grampa a ferocious softball pitcher? Head out to the ball diamond together. Was he the best small motor mechanic on the block? Dress your child in play clothes and let him or her help Grandad tune up the lawnmower motor.
Propose different categories and invite grandparents and grandchildren to come together for a grand day of fun and a friendly meal. You might want to leave time for crafts, sports, cooking, and storytelling.
Even better, suggest a “workshop” on old-fashioned play. Many of the common school yard games from as few as 20 years ago have been lost to time. Invite Gran to teach the kids some old skipping or clapping songs, ball games, and hopscotch variations.
ALL SMILES
However you all choose to spend the day together, the focus is on Grandmother and Grandfather and on creating a way for their skills and knowledge to shine.

How to make your dog become your best friend
Discover rhythms from around the world
Many people say that a dog is man’s best friend. However, despite all the affection that may have been lavished on them, pets often develop bad habits that their owners would love to correct. Sometimes, it is no longer clear who is even master of the home! Dog training classes can offer some solutions that will alleviate your and your pet’s stress.
Discover the colour and warmth of rhythms from around the world this fall by registering at an African or Brazilian drumming school. Give free rein to your creativity and learn about different cultures while having lots of fun. As well as developing your motor skills, learning the art of drumming will also allow you to improve your concentration and your musical memory.
A wide range of obedience training classes are available to owners and their dogs, whether they are puppies or adults. These classes aim to teach owners the main obedience techniques, and group sessions are often available so that dogs can become accustomed to concentrating even in the presence of distractions. Heel, sit, down, up, stay, and come are the basic commands demonstrated at the beginning of all these classes.
Classes offered by drumming schools are usually given in the form of group workshops that take place in a dynamic and festive atmosphere. They introduce participants to the playing techniques of various instruments, including the djembe, conga, bongo, darbuka, and doum doum. These instruments are supplied by the school and can sometimes be rented by students wishing to practice at home.
Owners will also learn to better understand a dog’s body language so they are able to correct the most common types of unwelcome behaviour: barking, excessive jumping, aggressiveness, and anxiety. Classes also include tips on grooming and healthcare, which are essential to the well-being of your four-legged friend. Many dog training schools offer private classes in the home so that owners can learn and practice new techniques with all the attention of the instructor.
So, whether you prefer to learn the art of djembe or gumboot, let the mesmerizing and powerful rhythms of Africa and Brazil sweep you away as you register at a drumming school or dance class.

Although methods recommended by obedience training schools may vary from one place to another, the formula based on positive reinforcement is by far the most popular. One thing is sure, training methods must always respect the animals. Once you have registered for a class, all you’ll have to do then is stock up on treats and be prepared to give your beloved pet lots of affection. Dog training classes teach owners the main obedience commands and enforcement techniques.
Surpass yourself with military style training Do you love working out? Maybe now’s the time to give yourself more of a challenge and push your limits even further by registering for boot-camp-style classes. Also known as cardio boot camps, these classes are inspired by training methods used by the armed forces. First of all, it should be said that unless otherwise specified, this type of class is adapted to those who are already fit and who would like to take on new challenges. Offered both indoors as well as outside in the fresh air, this training method was popularized towards the end of the 1990s by a U.S. military veteran.
PHOTO: MIKE POWELL / THINKSTOCK
Each class includes a complete workout built around muscle strengthening, cardiovascular endurance, and surpassing one’s limits. The goal is to enable participants to improve their balance, strength, flexibility, and agility. Just like recruits in the armed forces, you will have to do push-ups, crunches, races, and jumps to the rhythm of your instructor’s whistle blasts. If he or she has been well trained, be prepared to keep going, no matter what! Military style workouts are undoubtedly very demanding, both physically and mentally, but they are the most efficient type of exercise if practiced on a regular basis. If you want to lose weight or get in shape, this method is guaranteed to give you the desired results. Another advantage is that all the equipment you need is a good pair of running shoes, comfortable clothing, a towel, a water bottle, and unflinching determination! Just like armed forces recruits, you will be required to do exercises to the rhythm of your instructor’s whistle blasts.

Everything you need for home preserving You’ve finally decided to try your hand at home preserving, taking advantage of all the fresh seasonal produce available directly from the farm or at the grocery store? That’s great! Now all you have to do before embarking on this wonderful adventure is to equip your kitchen with a few essential tools and pick up a few tricks that will ensure your success.
Thanksgiving is for sharing and solidarity
Our Canadian tradition started in 1576, the year that British explorer Martin Frobisher arrived in North America in search of the Northwest Passage. He tried in vain to find gold and to establish a new colony. Despite the many setbacks he encountered, he held a formal ceremo-
ny in what is now the province of Newfoundland and Labrador to give thanks for having survived the long and arduous voyage. That is considered to be the first Canadian Thanksgiving. The first Thanksgiving held after Confederation was a civic holiday on April 5, 1872, in commemoration of the Prince of Wales’ recovery from a serious illness. It was only on January 31, 1957, that the Canadian Parliament declared the second Monday of October as the official Thanksgiving holiday, a time “for general thanksgiving to Almighty God for the blessings with which the people of Canada h ave been favoured.”

The freshness of produce must always be taken into consideration when home preserving: if it tastes overripe going into the jar, the preserves will taste overripe too. Also be sure to follow sterilization instructions for the jars you will be using. This will ensure that contaminating bacteria are destroyed and that a hermetic seal will be created to prevent spoilage on the shelf. By carefully following all the steps, you should be able to produce some delicious results without too much worry. Don’t forget to clearly mark your jars once they are filled so that you can easily identify the fruits of your labour!
N o w a d a y s Thanksgiving is a day of sharing and solidarity. Many charitable donations are made on this occasion, in the spirit of the tradition that Thanksgiving meals should be prepared and distributed to the poor. As a celebration of nature’s bounty, the ideal Thanksgiving meal is always copious and delicious.
PHOTO: JUPITERIMAGES / THINKSTOCK
These days Thanksgiving is celebrated in many expatriate communities in the far-flung corners of the world. Much of the turkey-day imagery is influenced by the American Thanksgiving holiday, held in November, but our own October version has roots worth celebrating too.
Here is a list of what you’ll need in order to make delicious relishes, ketchups, jams, and jellies: jars of various sizes with lids and rings; magnetic pliers for metal lids; a funnel especially designed for canning; a jar lifter for placing or removing the jars from boiling water; a plastic or silicone utensil for removing air bubbles; and a deep water bath canner or a pressure canner for preserving lowacid foods. Complete canning kits are available that can provide beginners with everything they need in one package. Your local hardware store is the place to pick up all the equipment you’ll need.
If you know how to cook you should be able to home preserve your favourite foods, as long as you follow a few important steps.

The equestrian look
The modern look is all the rage
Every fall, the equestrian look seems to make a comeback in one way or another. It has long since strayed from the stable, though, to become the epitome of urban elegance. Its popularity endures because of the structured lines and elegant polish that make the look flattering to the figure.
During recent fashion shows, several designers appear to have been following a similar guiding principal: modernize women’s style with a futuristic look. We saw lots of couture with clean cut lines that conferred a sleek and original look to the women wearing them.
Inspired by the home counties style from the beginning of the twentieth century, the chic horsewoman seen on the catwalks of the Dior fashion show last year has obviously been an inspiration for many other designers as well. Indeed, on the street last fall you might have noticed riding boots galore. They’re back again: those at the height of fashion will be wearing them with full-cut, pleated mid-length shorts or jodhpurs (otherwise known as riding breeches) and a jacket to give an aristocratic air. This season, Smart Set is offering two-toned leggings that evoke traditional jodhpurs. Worn with mid-thigh boots in suede, they are truly sublime.
With the unveiling of the winter collections, it was impossible not to think of the cheeky Twiggy-era energy that typified the 1960s, when some of the shorter dress lengths evoked the tunic. Also noticeable were the aesthetic influences of Courrèges, who introduced geometric forms to the world of fashion.
The rural colour palette of riding suggests the raw and rich tones for the season, such as chestnut, blonde, caramel, and natural leather. Indeed, leather is the perfect material for the cold season. The leather satchel is a must-have accessory; with its retro shape, it recalls the schoolbag of the past. Slightly more expensive than bags made of synthetic materials, a leather satchel is nevertheless sturdy and classic — a good investment for those who want to treat themselves to luxury.
This modern style is topped by simple hair arrangements, including 1960s-inspired hairstyles, à la Brigitte Bardot. Alternatively, we will be seeing short hairstyles with clean-cut lines.
The fall-winter collection from Bodybag by Jude offers several superb short dresses. Sometimes very simple, their effect is always stunning. These outfits combine the feminine with the enigmatic in superlative fashion. The fashionable palette this year emphasizes dark tones and monochrome ensembles. Some fashionistas love these tones, while others consider the look difficult to wear without more vibrant colours. For them, there are striking fall accents, such as oranges, rusts, and mustards to illuminate the darker tones of brown, charcoal grey, and jet black.
Keep in mind, as in all fashion trends, that an elegant equestrian look should never fall into excess: limit your outfit to one major “horsey” element at a time. This season, Smart Set is offering two-toned leggings that evoke traditional jodhpurs. (Photo www.smartset.ca)
Trend or 70s style? If you’re fed up with the 80s-style retro fashions that have been on the street for a while now — especially those little Peter Pan ankle boots — you’ll be pleased to know that the softer 70s look has begun a return and is not likely to disappear any time soon. That’s right, straight from Woodstock, the 70s style is all the rage. Get ready to be groovy again! The 70s style is an easy trend to follow. Just take your inspiration from the flower power folk singers of that era, with their high-waisted bell bottom pants and full colour spectrum. For a touch of hippy chic, emphasize the waist by combining pants with a tie-neck blouse, tucked into the pants and worn with an attractive leather belt and unique belt buckle. . To compliment a pretty floor-brushing dress, choose a pair of platform-soled shoes. Musts for the season are accessories such as wide-brimmed hats, or floral headbands — a classic hippy look. If your inclination is to ignore the more flamboyant 70s-influenced trends, the classic look will do just fine this season. Both these styles were seen during a recent fashion show held by Annie 50, where Eastern European folklore influences brought a soft and homey look to the runway. But no matter which decade sways you, a style worn elegantly will always be in fashion!

Your local dealer is your best ally Most people think that after the warranty on their car is over, they don’t need to keep returning to their dealership. They might be very wrong!
In the event of a major problem, a dealer will be able to find you a replacement vehicle, sometimes at a very reasonable price. For short-term needs, such as one day, they will likely be able to provide you a courtesy car or a shuttle bus service. If you have your car serviced regularly at a dealership, the chances are they will be able to catch any small problems before they become bigger ones. They will also be informed of any recall repairs that you are eligible for. That alone makes it worthwhile to return to your dealer, because it will save you money on the long term.

In some cases it could cost a little more at a dealership to have a car repaired or maintained. There are, however, some advantages to doing so. In most cases, a dealer will have the right expertise to correct, repair, and properly maintain your vehicle. What’s more, their technicians will know exactly where and what to look for when working on your car, thus saving some precious time that another mechanic might have to bill you for. Also, the dealership will have the proper tools to fix, repair, or maintain your vehicle, not to mention that they are more likely to have on hand the replacement parts for your vehicle.

What if the brake light comes on?
Be careful when changing a flat
There is a little light on the instrument panel that lights up in red if you have set the parking or emergency brake or if your vehicle experiences braking problems. When you disengage the parking brake, it should go off. If it stays on, it could be a small electrical problem like a stuck switch. That can be easily fixed. Sometimes, just playing with the brake a little will solve the problem, at least temporarily.
Having a flat tire can be a real nightmare. Unless you have a vehicle equipped with run-flat tires, which allow you to drive up to 50 kilometres to the next garage, you will have to pull over and change your tire.
If the light goes on and the brakes don’t seem to respond correctly, immobilize the vehicle right away. Slow down with the transmission by shifting to lower gears, switching into slower lanes. On automatic cars, that means switching into second and then low gears, letting the transmission do its job. With manual transmissions, dropping gears gradually should do the job. Try to stop the vehicle on the shoulder by pumping the brakes. Don’t hold your foot down on the pedal, because if you feel it sinking, it means you are losing all your braking power. Finally, when the car is coasting slowly, use the parking or emergency brake to stop it completely. That is exactly why that component should always be maintained in good condition. Once you’ve got the car stopped, call for roadside assistance.
Check that power steering fluid Have you ever heard a screaming sound when you turn your steering wheel a little too much? That could mean your power steering system is low on fluid. You might want to pop the hood and see what’s happening with your power steering pump. If this is unfamiliar territory for you, check your owner’s manual first and read the instructions. Make sure the engine is not running. The pump should be clearly identified and is usually at the front of the engine, where it will be attached to the belt. Open the pump lid and gently pull out the dipstick (it should come out with the lid). Wipe the dipstick off and dip it back into the pump. Remove it again. If it’s dry or barely wet, that means your pump needs fluid. It takes a special power steering fluid to fill the pump, one that can be found at your local auto parts shop or service station. Do not overfill the pump. Overfilling it will increase the pressure and pop the lid off, and then power steering fluid will spray all over the engine. If you had to refill the power steering pump, it might be a sign that there is a leak somewhere in the system. That means it would be a good idea to have the car checked out by a trusted mechanic.

If the brake light goes on, try to stop the vehicle as quickly as possible.
To be ready for such a situation, be sure your spare tire is well inflated and that the jack equipment is in good shape (read: not rusted in!). In a flat tire situation, stop the car as soon as possible. Sometimes, it might not be possible to stop, but know that running on a flat tire will surely ruin it, even by going just a few hundred feet. If you are in a situation where you really can’t stop, be assured that wrecking a wheel is better than putting your life in danger!
king brake on, and get out the spare tire and have it ready beside you. Loosen the tire bolts before jacking the car up, as the bolts might be frozen in. Jack up the car, keeping in mind that jacks are not trustworthy — be careful to not put yourself under the car at any time while it’s jacked up. Remove the bolts and take the flat tire by grabbing it at each side, rather than at the top and bottom. That will help you avoid getting your hands caught if the car slips off the jack. Remove the wheel and quickly install the spare. If it’s too heavy, use one of the tools to lift it into place. Retighten the bolts, stow the flat tire, and head to the nearest garage. There, make sure you have the right pressure in your spare to get to your own mechanic, or have the flat repaired and reinstalled right away.
If you find a safe place to change the flat tire, do it as per the instructions in the owner’s manual. Be sure you have wheel chocks to secure the car or truck, and work on a level surface. Place the parAlways take safety precautions when changing a tire.

If the light comes on while driving, it could mean trouble. The first thing to do is try to stop the car. If everything seems to be working well, pop the hood open and check the level of the brake fluid in the master cylinder. If it’s full and the brakes are working well, it could be a simple electrical short. Nevertheless, get
the vehicle checked as quickly as possible.
