Message from the

President riCCardo sestito, President, LanGLeY Good tiMes CrUise-in

Turn the clock back to 1997 when a few local shop owners had an idea to draw people to the downtown to shop. At that time they had no idea they had created one of the best mixed car shows in North America with the net proceeds going to local charity. From 430 registered cars to well over 1700 in 2011. This being my final year, living on no sleep from Friday until Sunday I can now relax and enjoy the show while taking a walk down memory lane. 2006 was my first year as chair, I had a head of thick black hair. Wow 2012, I still have that thick head of hair but now with a bit more gray and a lot of stories to tell. I became a director in 1999, filled with excitement and ideas. I held several positions before I became chair, I was treasurer and risk management. A.K.A. NO FUN was my nickname for always saying NO! to some of the crazy ideas on safety and costs that were presented at each meeting). Then I became in charge of the portable toilets/radios. I was told “this the most important job” (A.K.A Crapper Jack which is still one of my jobs today). I have been through the rainiest Cruise-in ever in history where you saw more umbrellas than cars.

You would have thought it was the middle of December and also some of the hottest when you did not want the show to end. I have met and worked with lots of great people over the last many years and would not trade any of those experiences for anything. This event is something that everyone in the community, from the volunteers, the sponsors, riCCardo the spectators, and the vehicle owners should be very proud of. Being a part of this event has set the stage for communities to copy but never duplicate. Welcome to Cruise-In 2012 Saturday Sept 8, the main event we all look forward to every year, the streets come alive early in downtown Langley, with some of the finest show cars, trucks and specialty vehicles in North America. Bring the whole family and enjoy all sorts of displays geared for all ages. You will notice a few changes this year.

We now have the entire market place in the Cascades Casino parking lot as well as a huge display by GM Canada. Check out the builders in “Builders Alley” or maybe you would like to check out the beautiful pin up girls and fine old school customs at the “Side Show” in the Build Magazine display just off of Fraser Hwy. Take a stroll through the crème de la crème of the sestito Concours d‘elegance which will wow your senses, set against the beautiful backdrop of Douglas Park. Be sure to try your luck on some of the raffles, especially “The Cruise-In Ultimate Garage Package.” Get your tickets early to avoid disappointment of a sell out. As always souvenirs, hats, T-shirts and of course the 2012 poster. Don’t forget to visit the fine shops in the area and enjoy the food offered by the local charities and restaurants. demand, once again coming up from California to serve up their famous burgers with all net proceeds going to benefit Cruise-In local charities. Got a classic car, or some spare parts to sell, or are you looking to buy? Then meet us at Kwantlen Polytechnic University on Sunday September 9 for our annual Swap Meet and Car Corral, which has become a favorite finale of the Cruise -In weekend. The entire event would not be possible without the sponsors and the dedicated volunteers who donate their time and effort to create a seamless event, a great success year after year. We are also proud that all net proceeds from the show go to local charities throughout the year. This year’s main charities are: The Langley Stroke Recovery, Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Society and The Langley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. So come see what Langley has to offer, see you downtown - enjoy the show. Once again it has been an honour to serve the community on this great event for all these many years. n

WIN $20,000 in Tools with the MIRANDA GATHERCOLE, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER

It’s hard to believe, but the Ultimate Garage raffle is back and even bigger than before. Worth a staggering $19,977.12, this year’s Ultimate Garage features 86 different items, ranging in price from $4.99 to $3,000, which are donated to the raffle by Lordco Auto Parts and its suppliers. It’s every mechanic’s dream shop in one package. “It has almost everything a home shop would need,” said Mike Coates, branch manager of Lordco Auto Parts in Langley. “Anyone who has a shop established already or just a little garage at home would find it really useful.” Since the show’s beginning, Lordco has been sponsoring the Langley Good Times Cruise-In by building a “garage” worth of tools and equipment to put up for raffle. All proceeds go directly to the Cruise-In charities, which Coates says is the best part of the whole kit. “I am a hot rod guy, I see cars all the time so I don’t usually go to other car shows. But the

ULTIMATE GARAGE

one thing I like about the Cruise-In, and I think it makes it different than other car shows, is it’s 100 per cent charity,” he said. “And I think it’s just awesome that they do that. It pushes me to put together a great garage.” It takes eight to 10 hours to set up the majority of the kit, which will be on display at the CruiseIn. The only item that won’t be on display is the Rotary 9000 lb. 4 Post Hoist, which takes an incredible five hours to set up and five hours to take down. With a value of $3,195.99, this is the largest and most expensive items in the kit. Lordco even has to use a special truck to transport the hoist’s 12-foot beams to the winner’s home. “The four-post hoist is really neat because a lot of people don’t have them. A lot of backyard guys would really like it,” Coates said. Last year’s winner, Rick Sparrow, was overwhelmed by the amount of tools he had inherited through the raffle. “It was great, he couldn’t believe he had won it,” Coates said. “Then we started showing up with truck loads of stuff, and he’s like ‘where I am go-

ing to put all of this stuff?’ We had filled his shop, there wasn’t any room for anything else to put in it. “It’s pretty neat to see the expression on their faces and to watch them smile as you’re unloading all of the tools and equipment.” The Ultimate Garage has everything car savvy you can think of. Top items include a Strongarm 20 ton Hydraulic Press, worth $1,640.99, a TCA 36” Industrial Cabinet, worth $1,199.99, a Chicago Pneumatic Air Compressor, worth $999.99, and a TCA 26” Roller Cabinet, worth $799.99. And with even more pieces ranging from a Waterloo Tool Box and a Launch Code Reader to a Powerwash 2700PSI Pressure Washer, this Ultimate Garage is the envy of every man. And all of this can be yours for only $10. Tickets are on pre-sale at Lordco Auto Parts, 5825 200 St., from the end of August until the day of the event, with the remainder sold at the Cruise-In on Sept. 8. Cost is $10 for one ticket or $25 for three. With only 2,400 tickets issued, they are sure to be a hot item. n

If they’ve been on the scene for a while he or she is going to have at least one, maybe two drawers that have only T-shirts with cars on them. Some shirts will feature the vehicle they have restored. Others may be souvenirs of car shows or events they have attended. If they have been to a major event like a Barrett-Jackson Auction or Hot August Nights, they will wear this shirt like a badge. Others will choose a couple of shirts if they are to be an all day event. You never know when a blob of relish or a slurp of coffee might soil the number one choice. always popular with collectors, some never taking them out of the bag. This year the Cruise-In Directors have tried something different. “In past years we have used the same design on the T-shirts and the posters,” explains Cruise-In director Lori Watts. “This year we will have one picture on our posters and a new, different design on the T-shirts designed by Greystone Promotional Products and Imprinted Apparel. This will give the people a variety of designs to choose from.” So ladies when you tell your husband to put on his good shirt because you are going out to dinner, don’t be surprised if he chooses the new one he bought at the 2012 Langley Good Times Cruise-In.

Come for the CARS Stay for the FOOD

MIRANDA GATHERCOLE, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER

Strolling down the crowded streets of Langley City during Cruise-In, you may see the glittering cars, hear the twang of Elvis playing and, of course, smell the festival food grilling on the barbecue. So when your hot rod hunger becomes too much to stand, it’s time to head over to a Cruise-In food vendor. Set up throughout the show grounds, local organizations will be serving fresh hot dogs, hamburgers and other goodies to keep your engine fueled for the day. In the past, food sales have raised an average of $25,000 in extra donations to give to the Cruise-In charities. This is on top of the regular $100,000 that is usually raised by the Cruise-In. Stop by one of the many locations for a delicious bite from your local volunteers:

Famed BURGER back in town !t isn’t just the smoking hot cars that draw a massive crowd at the Langley Good Times Cruise-In. Thousands of attendees flip for the famous “double-double” burgers served up by In-N-Out Burger. The popular California-based chain restaurant, known for its legions of loyal patrons, will be wheeling a cookout trailer to the event for the fourth year. Proceeds from every sale are donated to the Cruise-In’s sponsored charities. The line-up is usually long, but many who have sunk their teeth into a juicy In-N-Out burger, including incoming Cruise-In president Eric Taylor, swear it’s worth the wait. “It’s an experience you have to see, you don’t get those things here,” said Taylor of the burger with a cult following. The In-N-Out cookout trailer rolls into the marketplace bright and early the morning of the Cruise-In to begin prepping for the mayhem. “Everyone on board from the dishwasher and driver to the cooks and cashiers are out washing and polishing the truck,” said Taylor. “Once they are done making the burgers the word gets out and the line starts to build — it gets massive. It’s a steady, long line-up and people are anxious to get in it.” Taylor has tried the famed burger in Las Vegas as well as at the Cruise-In. “It’s a wonderful burger. I specifically went to an In-N-Out burger while I was on vacation just as my way of saying thank you for doing what they do for us here in Langley.”

And, while it may be a U.S. company, the Cruise-In — a Canadian event that raises money for local charities — is happy to extend a warm welcome to business from across the border, according to Taylor. “I would welcome any restaurant chain to do what they do,” he said. “They donate the food, their staff, and the facilities. The only thing we pay for is the cost of their fuel to drive from Los Angeles and back.” One of In-N-Out Burger’s vice presidents, Carl Van Fleet, said the 64-year-old restaurant chain, owned by the Snyder family, is honoured to once again be part of the event. “We are pleased to be a part of the Cruise-In,” he told The Times. “As a pioneer of the drive-through, we have enjoyed a long association with cars and car enthusiasts. We really feel it is a great event — a great way to provide philanthropic support. And once again, we will donate all the net proceeds to the Cruise-In charities.” n

elvis elite returns to the Cruise-in

MiRANDA GATHeRCOle, lANGleY TiMes CRUise-iN RePORTeR

Rocking out in the back of his orange ‘56 Ford short-box truck, Elvis Elite will be back cranking out classics from the iconic King of Rock. This will be the seventh year Steve Elliott, aka Elvis Elite, performs at the Langley Good Times Cruise-In. “Car shows are one of my favourites to perform at. I feel like I can be a real part of them,” Elliott said. “Elvis, the classic cars and the type of music we do, it all fits in with the Cruise-In.” A hot rod enthusiast himself, Elliott is the proud owner of a ‘56 Ford, which he uses during performances. “I’m not like some of those car guys who own 20 cars and never drive them. I have one and I drive it,” he joked. “But having a ‘57 Chev, baby blue with a white soft top, would be great. One day.” Elliott has only had his alter ego for about 10 years. Prior to becoming a tribute performer, he was a very successful political cartoonist. Born and raised in Nanaimo, Elliott grew up in an artististic home and quickly gained the knack for drawing. By 1995 he was one of the leading political cartoonists in B.C., freePremium Synthetic Oil Changelancing for a number of Vancouver publications.

He and his wife began attending karaoke nights at the local bar “just to sit there and have a drink and watch the performing,” he said. After seeing people get up and perform their best impressions of Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and Louis Armstrong, he was finally convinced to give it a shot. “I decided to try out Elvis, because that was the only voice I thought I would know how to emulate,” he said. And it paid off. “My wife told me I was actually good and she kept encouraging me to perform,” he said. By 2004 he was named the Top Canadian Tribute Champion at the Pacific Northwest Elvis Festival. Performing Elvis tributes was now a full-time job. “I like the innocence in Elvis in the early years of rock ‘n roll, before the jumpsuits of the ‘70s,” Elliott said. “He was just hardworking and talented. And the way the music moved him. I feel the same way. “In the early years he was really raw.” His favorite song to perform is How Great Thou Art, from Elvis’ gospel period, followed by Don’t Be Cruel, from the rock ‘n roll repertoire. ➤

“Gospel is definitely a big influence. I love Gospel. We do special Gospel shows too because a lot of Elvis’ songs got played, but not all of them did, and we like to show off that side that isn’t heard as often,” he said. Over the years, Elliott has discovered that he has an uncanny knack for many impressions. Roy Orbison, Nat King Cole, and Arnold Schwarzenegger are likely to make an appearance or two during his shows. “The audiences really get into it. I try to bring back the memories for them,” he said. shelby The legacy lives On When Keith Fortier, a Langley classic car enthusiast, saw that Shelby American was going to celebrate their 50th anniversary by offering a GT350 conversion, he knew that was what his new vehicle was going to be. “When we were all younger, we all wished we could afford a Shelby, a Corvette or a Charger, but we didn’t have the money. Now that the financial situation is better I knew I wanted to have a GT 350 built, because I would have a ‘One of One’ car. The depreciation on a Corvette or Camaro is pretty substantial but a Shelby prepared car will hold its value.” The original GT350 was marketed as “the Shelby for the people.” Based on the successes of the Shelby/Mustang racing cars, the GT350 was introduced in 1965. They built 521 street models and 36 competition models on the Mustang GT chassis and, as Keith points out, they are still the most coveted of the Shelby Mustangs.” Keith’s GT350 didn’t appear overnight. “The Shelby people provided me with the options to order on a 2012 Mustang GT. I ordered the vehicle locally, then delivered it to the Shelby factory in Las Vegas. They pretty much took the stock Mustang apart and rebuilt it. I ordered it on Feb. 11, 2011 and took Museum delivery over a year later on March 13,

2012 at the Shelby American facility. “The body got a new front and rear end. Then it got new suspension, brakes, tires, rims and a custom exhaust. I went for the full load and had a Shelby interior and shifter and chose the option of having the Lemans stripes painted on, not vinyl ones applied.” The original 412 hp Coyote engine was supercharged and race tuned and fitted with a cold air intake system. It was now producing 615 hp. “I had planned the delivery to come off the Shelby assembly line in time for their 50th anniversary celebrations and the Shelby people are fantastic to work with and be around. They were very proud of their history. “The best part of the delivery was taking the new vehicle out to Spring Mountain Race Track about

JIM MCGReGOR, lANGley TIMes CRUIse-IN RePORTeR an hour out of Las Vegas for an opportunity to race the car. There were literally hundreds of Shelbys out there, all years and all models. We were given a one-day novice driver training course then sent out on the track. “It was amazing. In the course, they showed us the signal to give if we wanted someone to go around us. I didn’t use it, nobody passed me.” Keith has other vehicles in his stable, including a couple of beautiful early T-bird convertibles. “I enjoy the classics but at times it’s nice to have something new and reliable to drive too. Recently we took the new GT350 on a Mustang run up to Manning Park, which was a great day. This will be my ‘sunny day car,’ I don’t believe in buying something and hiding it in a garage. “My only disappointment was not getting to meet Carroll Shelby. He was very sick and passed away not long after I took delivery. I had previously sent down my air bag cover for him to sign and that was one of the last few he did.” Was the 2012 conversion expensive? Let’s just say the base price of a 1965 Shelby 350 was $4,311 and that wouldn’t even cover the cost of painting the Lemans stripes on the new one. n

100 Years of

electric Vehicle technology JiM McGreGOr, lANGleY tiMeS crUiSe-iN rePOrter Nikola Tesla was widely respected as one of the greatest electrical engineers who worked in America. He pioneered modern electrical engineering, but with all his predictions, even he likely never assumed an electric-powered automobile bearing his name would one day be able to go from 0 to 60 in 3.6 seconds. Dr. Doug McFee of Langley is the owner of a 2011 Tesla Roadster. Prior to our interview, he offers to take me for a ride. We stop on a clear straight stretch of road and he smiles, then presses the accelerator. There is no roar of an engine, no squeal of tires, we just go. In

a little over three seconds we pass 60 MPH, then 80. Just as I think he is going to enter the launch code, he backs off the pedal and we begin to immediately decelerate. “I bought this vehicle mainly as a collector car,” he explains “Tesla bought 2,500 Lotus chassis’ to use for the Roadster model and when I purchased this one, there were only 39 left in North America. I believe that this is the future of the automobile and that is positive for the environment.” The latest models have no transmission, as that was the weakest part in the drive train of the early models. If you

want to go in reverse, you simply push a button and the motor turns in the opposite direction. “Other than tires and brakes, there is very little maintenance. It comes with three types of chargers. The overnight charge is more than enough for the day’s driving. Charged on extended range mode, we have driven it to Whistler and back with no problems. The 50 amp and 70 amp chargers require a 220 circuit and we see more of those charging stations being installed throughout the province.” The single large battery that powers the Roadster is a 220 amp, 46 watt lithium

Darnell & C Company ompany

battery. It takes up a large portion of the area behind the seat, but in the larger Tesla models there is plenty of passenger room. Currently the provincial government is providing a $5,000 grant to anyone purchasing an electric vehicle within the province. McFee predicts that we will see more electric vehicles being available in the $30,000 range within five years. “This one was expensive because of the model and the demand, but the low daily operating costs will make up for that over time.” John Stonier, spokesperson for ➤

electric Vehicle John Stonier, spokesperson for the Vancouver Electric Vehicle Association (VEVA), agrees with him. “One of our showcase vehicles is a 1912 Detroit Electric. VEVA has this vehicle on display at the Stave Falls Museum right now, and it runs like the day it came off the assembly line. The electric motor is similar to the elevator motors of the day and it has not been out of the vehicle or taken apart in over 100 years. “Today’s internal combustion engines have over 640 moving parts operating in constant metal to metal friction

driven by explosions. The electric motor has bearings and a rotor, not much to go wrong there. Electric cars are superior in every way. Very inexpensive to operate, but with all the luxury and quiet, and they are certainly cleaner to operate.” This 1912 Detroit Electric car was manufactured by the Anderson Car company in Detroit. It was driven regularly until 1950, and was a featured historic car at Vancouver’s Expo 86. The front and rear compartments were filled with the optional nickel-iron batteries which gave it a range of close to 100 miles.

The still fullyoperational batteries finally had to be replaced in the late 1980s when the Bakelite cases starting to leak. The car is currently powered by 96 volts, consisting of 16 lead acid batteries, each 6-volt. The range with the lead acid batteries is 60 to 80 kilometres. In place of the original large wall-mounted charger are two smart 48-volt chargers operating off 120 volts, manufactured and donated by Delta-Q Technologies of Burnaby, BC. There have been many conspiracy theories regarding the demise of electric vehicle technologies over the years. Many have blamed the big car companies for keeping a lid on electric cars. “The pundits who speak against electric vehicles refuse to discuss depreciation,” says Stonier. “The mass-produced gasoline vehicles lose their value almost immediately upon delivery. A 10-year-old Porsche is a poor investment because of the wear and tear on the power train. That can be expensive. An electric-powered vehicle will perform the same five to ten times longer.” n

Eric Taylor – upcoming

PRESIDENT

The Fords are out and the Chevys are in, as 2012 marks the last year Riccardo Sestito remains president of the Langley Good Times Cruise-In. Sestito (ever a Ford fan) is passing the presidency torch to Eric Taylor (a self-proclaimed Chevrolet guy), who came on the executive committee as a director last year. Since taking over as president in 2006, Sestito and his devoted team have helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for local charities — a feat that even he has a hard time taking in. “I don’t even think about the money to be honest. My focus is on a quality show,” Sestito said. “Of course I always try to get as many bucks for charities as I can. But I just want to make sure things run smoothly, no one gets hurt and that the show goes on next year.” Before taking over as president, Sestito served many roles as a volunteer with the Cruise-In. He started off as the risk manager, and shortly after took over as treasurer. He even served the role of ‘Crapper Jack,’ a name he rightfully earned being in charge of setting up the toilets. It wasn’t long before he became the cruise-In vice-president, a title he held for five years before becoming president. Next year he’s “looking forward to doing nothing.” Although he will be sticking around as past-president, he says he feels relieved at finally being able to pass the reins to someone else. For him the best part of the show has always been the morning when the cars first start to roll in, and the very end when everything is finally over. “There are so many memories, but I love the end of the show on Sunday afternoon when it’s done,” he said. “You’re running on adrenaline for three to four days and then at the end on Sunday afternoon you’re sitting around wondering what to do.” Now it’s time for the spotlight to be taken over by Taylor, who is a perfect match for the role, Sestito said. “I’m liking what I see. I’m totally confident in Eric becoming president. I feel it’s going to be in good hands,” he said. But before crossing the finish line on his very last show, Sestito must show Taylor the rules of the roost. An event this large takes months of planning, and even Taylor was taken aback by how much time the volunteers contribute.

MIRANDA GATHERCOLE, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER

“I don’t want to count the hours Riccardo puts into it because it’s massive, that has to be the biggest eye opener for me,” Taylor said. “Riccardo does it because he loves the Langley Cruise-In. And that’s why anyone should get involved, because they love it, because there is no money to be made.” Taylor has been involved with the Cruise-In for many years organizing the marketplace, and served as a director last year. This time around, he has been shadowing Sestito, “watching the things he worries about and the things he doesn’t worry about,” he said. “I hope to manage not to trip. The show has its own life and I’m hoping I don’t do something so wrong I mess it up,” Taylor said with a laugh. For him, the single most important part of the Cruise-In is raising money for the charities. “I love the charitable nature of it,” he said. “If it was a for-profit show I wouldn’t be interested. If a company was running it trying to make money, I don’t really care, that’s not where my heart is. “My interest in Cruise-In is all about raising money for charity. It’s about how we can give back to the community.” n

“People really appreciate all the effort that goes into organizing the Cruise-In, especially seeing that most of the money goes to charity — it’s not just a big money grab.” A native of Port Colburne, Ont., Mahaffey has been interested in cars since he was just a young buck. His first ride was a rusty black 1946 Buick, which he bought in 1967 at the age of 15 from a farmer for $15. While it was quite the steal — even for an old beater — the vehicle didn’t last him very long. “I had that car for about a week before I drove it into the ground,” he laughed. Mahaffey is your typical car enthusiast. The self-proclaimed “car buff” has had a few different businesses over the years helping people to restore their ➤

Tim Mahaffey couldn’t be prouder of his 1968 Firebird, a gleaming burgundy red dreamboat that he has restored from top to bottom. “Every nut, bolt and screw is brand new,” said the father of two, who has been taking his prized hot wheels to the Langley Good Times Cruise-In for the past 10 years — except for 2010, when the show hit a speed bump (it was cancelled for a year). Mahaffey, 55, admits he was disappointed by the hiatus two years ago, but is thrilled the good times will continue to roll in Langley’s downtown core this weekend. “I’m sure glad to see it’s back,” said the Langley resident of the one-of-a-kind event that raises thousands of dollars for local charities every year.

cars. He also ran a car dealership back in the 1970s in Burnaby. But, of all the cars he’s worked on or taken for a spin, the Firebird is his all-time favourite. “I saw the ‘for sale’ sign on it one morning on my way to work and stopped to take a look at it,” he said of the car he purchased 30 years ago from a couple, who sold it to help pay for their wedding. “Later that night I went back and bought it.” It’s safe to say that Mahaffey, who has only driven the car a couple of dozen times (never in the rain) and has only washed it once in 30 years, is a little protective of his pride and joy. And you can’t really blame him, considering a horrific incident that happened in the 1980s. “I was out at a friend’s house for dinner when some vandals came and dumped paint thinner all over a bunch of cars. Mine just happened to be one of them,” said a regretful Mahaffey, who

ROLL

came out to find paint streaming off his prized wheels. By looking at his car now, one could never tell it had been victimized by vandals. The car’s glistening paint job is quite the attraction to anyone who passes by, according to Mahaffey. “It’s like the house of mirrors,” he said. “When you walk by, your reflection changes from short and wide to tall and skinny. Kids always get a kick out of it.” Mahaffey hopes to park his car in his usual spot at the Cruise-In (in the Concourse). He invites the public to step right up and check out his ride as well as to reach deep into their pockets to help out the Cruise-In’s sponsored charities. “We much appreciate all the people who come to this wonderful event. Stop by and say hi — let’s keep the good times rolling and remember that an extra toonie or loonie will go a long way.”. n

and shop Hotrod Style “Have an old box of parts sitting around

collecting dust? Or how about that project car that never really got off the ground? Pull them out and take them down to the Kwantlen parking lot. ”

Langley Good Times Cruise-In will feature some of the hottest cars and trucks on the show circuit, but it’s on the following day that you’ll have your best chance to purchase one of them, or to look for that elusive part. The annual Swap Meet and Car Corral will take place on Sunday, Sept. 9, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot of Kwantlen Polytechnic University, just off Highway 10 and Glover Road. It may be a small meet, but it’s large in popularity, said Steve Paul, organizer of the event and a board member for the KPU Foundation. “It was decided a few years back to extend the venue of the Cruise-In, and what we found was that people were showing up on Sunday, and there was very little going on,” he explained. Created through a partnership between the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Foundation and the Langley Good Times Cruise-In, the meet raises thousands of dollars to be split between both organiza-

tions each year. Proceeds donated to the KPU Foundation go towards Kwantlen’s sponsorship program for students who can’t afford classes. “It’s the town and gown connection and this is an excellent way for the Langley Good Times Cruise-In to do what it’s doing for the community, and it’s a venue that allows CruiseIn to work with Kwantlen to create an opportunity for bursaries and scholarships as well,” Paul said. There are two components to the Swap Meet. The first is the actual parts swap, which will offer everything from rusty door handles for that rare make and model, to new tools and more. The second component is the Car Corral, where owners can put their car in the mix and up for sale. It could be a finished, show-quality hot rod or classic car, or a project waiting for a motivated new owner. Paul says the popular Car Corral featured at the Swap Meet was started out of necessity. “People who were showing their

cars in the grand event on Saturday would have ‘for sale’ signs on their cars, and often times, potential buyers can’t find the owners in the maddening crowd so they could try the car out. “So we decided to put in the Car Corral component, and it’s one of the biggest presences at the swap.” Paul says it brings the buyer and seller together, and raises money at the same time. “This is the day after the main venue, but this is perfect for people looking for project cars,” he said. Have an old box of parts sitting around collecting dust? Or how about that project car that never really got off the ground? Pull them out and take them down to the Kwantlen parking lot. “It’s been largely successful and a win-win for the event and participatn ing charities,” Paul said.

PROUD SPONSOR: SEPTEMBER 2012

Beyond showing off incredible cars and raising money for charities, Cruise-In also has a huge impact on the local business community. With downtown streets shut down and crowds of 100,000 people wondering about, it’s a prime opportunity for local storefronts to show off what they’re all about. Cruise-In has been hit hard by businesses in the past, who are upset over the loss of parking spaces and the inaccessibility that happens when street closures are in effect. But as one business owner says, “you just have to look at the bright side.” Heather Jenkins, owner of 1 Fish 2 Fish Fresh Seafood Market on the one-way portion of Fraser Highway, has embraced the Cruise-In since she opened her store 14 years ago. Although she sells seafood, not cars, and her biggest connection to the car community is that she “drives one,” Jenkins looks forward to the event every year. “It’s a great, great event,” she said. “I can’t believe how much money it has raised for nonprofits. It’s awesome. “It’s not necessarily the best financial day for us, but what other day can you get 100,000 people walking past your front door? So it’s your job as a

business to attract their attention, and usually someone saw you who didn’t know you were there before.” Located right in the heart of Cruise-In action, Jenkins does her best to display to visitors what 1 Fish 2 Fish has to offer. She sets up a table outside her store and sells salmon jerky and smoked salmon to hungry passersby. She also has staff members walking throughout the crowd with flyers and promotions. “You really just have to try to grab people’s attention and have a good time with it,” she said. “There’s so many different opportunities that you can take.” Although it is harder for regular customers to make it to the store, and sales are much lower than a typical Saturday, Jenkins doesn’t complain. “It’s once a year, it’s one day, and it does create so much awareness for the charities. It’s such a good feeling event,” she said. “I love the energy — the energy of the crowd, the people, and the local restaurants do so well. It’s a great day for them. There are some naysayers, but the majority of us are supportive of it. “We just try to have a good time and enjoy.” n

Is Your Crack Showing?

The City Welcomes Along with many delighted car fans, families and businesses, the City of Langley is giving Cruise-In a warm welcome back. The event not only means a lot to the hot rod community and local charities, but it is also very important to the City of Langley itself. “It’s great exposure for the City. It brings a lot of people into the downtown,” said Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender. “It’s a great event that draws people from all over, predominately from the northwest here and from Washing-

ton state especially. But we have had people who have come from England in the past − there was even a couple of people from Australia that I had met, so we have many people that come here and it’s just a great event.” With crowds upwards of 100,000 expected to flood the streets of downtown Langley, there are many opportunities to promote the City, but also many precautions that need to be taken. Increased policing, manning of barricades and security for the hundreds of hotrods parked on the streets all need to be taken into

account to ensure the event stays family friendly and safe. Mayor Fassbender recognizes these challenges that come with hosting such a large event, and acknowledges that not everyone may benefit. He agrees that some businesses may be impacted negatively from the street closures and large crowds, and that residents in the area may be disturbed. But on the flip side, it is a great chance for locals to get out and enjoy their community, and there is also a large marketing opportunity present for merchants to take advantage of. “It reinforces our sense of community,” Fassbender said. “Those [businesses] that see it as a marketing opportunity get exposure to a lot of folks. I think there is a business value that comes out of it for the downtown, if not on the day than in

the future because people see that we have a lot going for ourselves,” he added. There are many other good things that Cruise-In brings to the City, as the mayor points out. It helps raise large sums of donations for local charities that benefit the Langley community, it unites the businesses and residents together and it creates a great family event for people to go out and enjoy. “Cruise-In is a wonderful event, it’s a great family day, it’s a great day for people who love cars. When you see the crowds, you see people of all ages who come out and walk the streets, and that’s a good thing,” he said. “To me, with all of the challenges that come with closing down the city for a day, the benefits I think outweigh that.” n

Classic Mustang MIRANDA GATHERCOLE, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER

When “some ordinary guy” approached Jeremy Mannall-Fretwell at Cruise-In last year looking for some Mustang parts, he had no idea just how lucky he was. Mannall-Fretwell, owner of Classic Mustang parts in Victoria, was about to aid in the creation of a replica Steve McQueen bullet car for the TV show Alcatraz — not a bad connection to make at his very first Cruise-In appearance. “It was pretty cool because they were building a special car for a cool show that I was looking forward to myself,” MannallFretwell said. “So not only was it a financial benefit but it was also a neat experience to be involved with. “And when the show was finally on TV, we could say ‘hey, that was in my garage’ or ‘hey, that’s the part that I had to go dig out of my old barn.’ That kind of stuff was really quite cool.” The show Alcatraz, which was partly filmed in Vancouver, aired for one season in January of 2012 before being cancelled. Mannall-Fretwell and his wife watched the show every week for any sign of the car. “The best part about the show was that the car wasn’t the focus of the show. It was just the car she drove in the show. And they never explained any links to the whole Steve McQueen thing. The premiss of the show had a lot of tie-in’s to the 1960s, so you could see it was maybe leading up to it at some point,” he said. Prior to attending Cruise-In in 2011, Mannall-Fretwell had never heard of the show. In fact, he knew little about cars either until two and a half years ago. That’s when he purchased the small business Classic Mustang as a project. Having his masters in public administration, Mannall-Fretwell spent many years working as a consultant in road safety for ICBC, not fixing cars.

But, as he claims “I needed something to do, so I thought what better to do than buy a failing business and pump all of my savings into it?” At the time the most he knew about cars is that they “had four wheels. I could fix a car but I wasn’t a car guy. In fact I vividly remember my dad saying to my mom ‘when is he going to learn to fix this?,’ and she saying ‘well maybe he’ll be rich enough to afford his own mechanic.’ And I kind of went with that,” he said. With a vision to create an online presence for Classic Mustang, Mannall-Fretwell has managed to turn both his business and his career around. Now, he is a familiar face at Mustang and Ford shows throughout the province, and once again will be returning to Cruise-In for 2012. For him, the biggest shock of the annual Langley show was its size. “I’ll tell you what the biggest impact was,” he said. “I woke up in the morning in the hotel at some ungodly hour, because car people like to get up early, and I could hear this sound outside. And I thought ‘what the hell is this roaring sound? It’s six in the morning, there should be birds chirping.’ “I pulled back the curtains at the window and the cars were lined up out onto the highway, and they were all idling waiting to get into Downtown Langley to take their spots. And it’s not even 7 a.m. Most car shows I go to cars start showing up between 8 and 9 a.m., by 10 o’clock everything is up and running. I actually got into a traffic jam leaving the hotel trying to get to my booth spot. “So that more than anything was the biggest impact on me. Oh my god this is a really big show. I was really impressed.” For more on Classic Mustang, visit Mannnall-Fretwell’s booth at Cruise-In or go to www.classicmustang.ca. n

Cruise-In “side show” MIRANDA GATHERCOLE, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER

Come one, come all to witness the circus of car anomalies, where the best of the best hand-built custom cars will be on display. View these “freaks” and “outcasts” of the car world at the corner of 56 Avenue and Fraser Highway, where the Cruise-In customs sideshow will take place. Following the footsteps of lasts year’s inaugural event, the sideshow will give builders an opportunity to show off their custommade cars. And this doesn’t necessarily mean million dollar cars. They can range anywhere from $1,000 to $100,000 in worth. What matters here is creativity, quality and heart — not wallets. “We often get mistaken for rat rods because

our cars are a little bit more extreme than they were back in the day,” said Garrett Cahoon, organizer of the event and owner of Build Magazine. “If a car was lowered a couple inches, now it is lowered seven. Everything is just a little more extreme.” Featuring a 1930s and 1940s carnival theme, the area has a selection of custom bikes and cars that don’t often make it to regular shows. “We keep it to the handcrafted cars with a little more character,” Cahoon said. “A lot of these cars are cars people have built themselves. So when you talk to someone about your car

Marketplace you can actually say you built it, or you had a really big part in it. You didn’t just sign the bill.” Last year’s show was a huge success, and this year Build Magazine is trying to top it with some new attractions. The popular pin-up contest, hosted by Pin-Up Perfection, will be back but will have a few new twists. Instead of having audience votes and a talent show, the contest will be turned into a comedic take on a traditional beauty pageant. The Girls of Build models will also be nearby signing autographs, and several car clubs will have unique cars and booths set up.

Want to choose the Right TRANSMISSION SHOP? Free pickup and delivery of your vehicle on any service

You’ve probably already heard that most of the cars brought to transmission shops don’t need a new transmission. The vehicle must be properly test driven and subjected to a detailed diagnostic process before any shop can realistically say whether or not a major problem exists and how much it will cost. “Our This is where we out perform everyone, Customers including the dealers. For years, our customers have had the peace of mind knowing we repaired only what was necessary while building Send Their quality and value into every transmission. And at Atlas, you will talk to Friends!” a technician, not a salesperson!

No. 9 Cycles will have a number of bikes on display, including one that won best of show at Sturgis North. This small sideshow within the Cruise-in is all about trying to expose the scene and this type of sub-culture, which Cahoon believes is becoming more mainstream and common. “We like to see some actual personalization and some custom stuff on the vehicles,” he said. “We are big believers that if you own the car, cut it up. Don’t listen to other people. A lot of people out there like to tell you what to do with your vehicles. It’s yours not theirs, do what you want.”

Cruise-In Strengthens Father-Daughter

BonD

“Are you ready? Let’s go.” I registered my dad’s waking and crawled out of bed. I glanced at the clock and smiled. In five minutes, I was downstairs, clad in an AC/DC T-shirt and worn jeans that had been ripped with an X-Acto knife two summers ago. I could hear the house reverberate with the rumble of the Willys as it came to life, my father backing it out of the garage and into the driveway. I jumped in and slammed the door once, twice, before my father reached across and slammed it for me. I thought there had to be some secret trick to it. Streetlights commenced their dim lighting as the MalISSa rest of the neighbourhood clung to the last hours of sleep. We looked at each other and laughed in spite of ourselves as the car roared down the road, unable to control its noise any more than we could contain our excitement. Heads turned as people openly stared in their cars as we reached the highway. The Willys announced its presence with great authority. My father stared straight ahead, but I could see a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. I surveyed the road from inside the black painted coupe, where I saw a man in the car beside us giving the thumbs up. My father nodded in his direction, engaging the clutch and speeding off as the light changed to green. We approached the congregation of old muscle cars with increasing attention. People as thick as molasses clogged the roads near 56 Avenue, We

parted the Red Sea with an air of sovereignty. Cameras flashed, phones appeared, and video cameras rolled as the crowd stood mesmerized, grinning broadly. A man sporting a graying Santa beard gawked like a surprised goose beside a nearby lamppost. “We’re going to get a crappy spot,” my father observed, gauging the remainder of available spaces surrounding the hobby shops. I didn’t think there was a spot where we wouldn’t be seen, but I knew he was thinking that it was likely the judges wouldn’t be noticing his baby. I recalled the wall that housed the “Willys Parking Only” sign, hanging among the numerous plaques that boasted its accomplishments. In any case, there MonIz wasn’t much room there now. We were directed to an old lot behind a retro diner. People began milling around us before we could get ourselves out of the tight space of the car. I stood to the side, inspecting a ‘69 Mustang fastback as the crowd advanced and admired the Willys’ jet-black steel body and protruding Hemi engine.

“The Willys announced its presence with great a u t h o r i t y .”

I went back in time. I wasn’t more than three years old, and I could recall standing in Neil’s Paint Garage looking at the hollow and sanded body, lying decrepitly on the floor. I remembered sitting on the concrete steps of the shop at our old house while my father painstakingly inserted the engine with the help of the cherry picker, which evoked further memories of the little

stereo in the corner that blasted “Supernaut” and “Hand of Doom” with all its tinny glory. “...really from three different bodies,” my father recounted among the masses. “One was a rusted old piece of shit that I found upside down with a bullet hole through the middle. That was a real hassle, that one.” Everyone chuckled with wide eyes. I glanced over at him from beside the brilliant blue Mustang where I stood. The sun reflecting off the paint seared my eyes, so I squinted. Older men in jean jackets peered into the coupe and under the hood, circling the Willys to observe every angle. “This really is a beast, buddy,” a scruffy man remarked. “Wow. Perfectly restored and everythin’. You don’t see one of these everyday.” I ran my eyes along the double white stripes of the Mustang and saw myself grinning in the tailgate. The sun was high as we squinted into the window of a ‘71 Roadrunner, admiring the leather interior and the customized bodywork that looked as if it was painted yesterday. We came to the engine, where I laughed at one of many cautionary signs. “A classic auto is like another man’s wife - look and admire, but do not touch.” We wandered through the crowds and around the block, examining ‘70 Novas, ‘55 Chevys, and ‘68 Camaros. I marveled at the uniqueness of each, thinking of the time that went into making them something to show off. Inspiration and comfort fused into a simultaneous feeling. “Are you hungry?” my father asked as I started to look into a bright red Chevelle. “Let’s get some breakfast. I know a good place.” We made our way around the corner and down two blocks. People of all walks of life infiltrated the streets as well as the sidewalks, and I could see more occupying various cafes and pawn shops through the glass win-

dows. I smiled at a young girl sitting in a stroller in the shape of a pink Bonneville. The smell of burning hot dogs accented the atmosphere while Led Zeppelin crooned from some blessed source. My father opened the door to Rosie’s Diner, an insignificant looking establishment that appeared to be adorned by my grandmother. “I come here every Wednesday for lunch,” he said as we chose a booth. We both ordered the same thing, Rosie’s Deluxe Brunch, since he assured me that they made the best sausages in the entire town. “So, are we going out tonight?” he looked up at me before spooning a forkful of hashbrowns into his mouth. I smiled. “Yeah, this is the big one, right?” “Mhmm.” He finished off his enormous glass of milk. “It sure is.” The night was crisp and ringing with the sound of revving engines by the time we rounded the corner. Metallica was blasting from the twin subs, and the Willys made a scene of its own as we contributed to the symphony. Classic cars filled every parking lot and corner; every street was alive with burning rubber and supercharged V-8s. People lined the sidewalks as if we were the main attraction of a Macy’s Day Parade, and cops could be seen on patrol every which way. Cat-calls and incredulous shouts erupted as we cruised the town in relaxed fashion, finally pulling into the back of a dim A&W parking lot to give the car a rest. My father turned off the ignition and flipped several switches while steam radiated from the hood. “Damn,” he mumbled as he confirmed overheating with a glance at the water temperature gauge. He opened the door and raised the hood as scorching heat immediately hit his face. My father cursed and turned away, telling me to get water from inside. I entered the restaurant and asked for two full large cups. My father carefully poured them into the radiator, which wasn’t nearly

enough, and I repeated the process several times. On the fourth or fifth run, the manager noticed me, approaching us through the back door to investigate. He was a tall, lanky man with befitting spectacles perched on his slim nose. “I saw her with the water and I just thought I’d see what was going on,” he said. “It just overheated here. But it’ll be fine,” my father explained as he crouched to continue pouring water. “Ahh. Yes. These things do need maintenance, don’t they,” he said, scratching his head. “My, there’s so many police out tonight! I tell you, last year there was so much noise when people came roaring down this street, there was smoke everywhere. It’s a lot more controlled now, that’s how it should be.” “Oh for sure,” my father nodded. “You don’t need these crazy people to be waking up the whole town.” “Exactly, exactly,” the manager nodded. “It is good for business though, I have all my staff working overtime! They aren’t too happy with me right now,” he chuckled as he turned to leave. “Well, let me know if you need anything more. Don’t want them running off on me.” My father and I left the Willys to simmer in the lot, and we joined the crowd on

the sidewalk as cars passed in continuous succession. He knew each one’s make and model as he pointed them out to me. “68 Dart, used to see tons of those back in the day. ‘69 Charger, those are pretty fast. 1970 GTX, ‘71 Barracuda, ‘56 Fairlane, 1968 Camaro SS... “My friends and I would take our cars and race down this road with my Nova,” my father recounted. “There were no irritating cops around back then, this used to be so common. Every Friday night would be like this, with drag races and everything. It was the best, man.” I laughed and recalled the image of the oblivious manager. I looked at my father, his full six feet. He was broad and strong, and his eyes were gleaming and reminiscent as he continued to list off the deafening cars that roared by. I shared his love for this world and longed to stay in it, one of muscle cars and rock n’ roll, one that allowed you to enjoy one other and to have a good time. I looked back to the oncoming parade. “ 69 Mustang fastback,” I said. “Four speed.” My father laughed and rumpled my hair. “One day,” he said. I believed him. n

This will be the second year Martin Brown returns to the Langley Good Times Cruise-In to co-ordinate the show’s Marketplace — a one-stop shop for unique collector memorabilia and souvenirs. The 41-year-old Langley resident is in charge of promoting the market, selling the spots to vendors and making sure there is a wide variety of goods and services. And, it’s not just the typical car shirt or coffee mug you’ll find for sale, according to Brown. “Some really excellent clothing options have come into the Marketplace, from people who hand-make them locally, to people who source them from all over the world.” While his post is an unpaid position — none of the volunteers or directors makes a dime — Brown is happy to give his time to a great cause. “I enjoy being involved in any event that celebrates vehicles,” said Brown, who has logged about 45 hours this past year organizing the Marketplace. “With the Cruise-In, I like the fact that it’s all about community and fundraising — it also just so happens to incorporate a favourite subject and hobby of mine.” Stories of Brown as a toddler always seem to revolve around cars, he told The Times. “I have forever been in love with cars. I couldn’t wait until I was older so I could get something to work on and fix up.” The self-proclaimed car buff’s first project car was a 1959 Grabber Blue Volkswagen Beetle, for which he paid $2,800 at the age of 16. “I pushed that car more than I drove it because it broke down so much,” he laughed. But Brown was more than happy to roll up his sleeves and tinker around under the hood. “I made many mistakes, but it helped me learn. I also had a good friend and neighbour who had an interest in cars and we’d work on them together. That really confirmed my love of cars from then on in.” While Brown has since acquired quite the impressive fleet — a 1964 Chevrolet custom-cab pickup, 1965 Mustang in original stock and a 1971 Chevrolet pickup, also a original — he kept his first car like a memento up until seven years ago.

custom exhaust specialists

martin Brown is on the Langley Good Times Cruise-In volunteer committee once again as co-ordinator for the marketplace Bidding farewell was difficult, but Brown found someone who would love his prized car as much as he did. “When I realized I was probably never going to have an interest in it again, I parted with it like I was giving away a family heirloom.” His first love went to a lady who purchased a dress to match the car, which she wore the day he delivered it. “She would send me emails from time to time to tell me how she (the Beetle) was doing.” Brown’s new pride and joy is his 1971 Ochre Yellow Chevy pickup. “I was kind of looking for a project and happened to cross this truck in Abbotsford,” he said. “I intended to clean it up and have something to drive every day, but ended up kind of completely restoring it from top-to-bottom. Now it has collector’s plates and is a bit of a ‘sunny-day-only’ vehicle.” Brown is looking forward to taking his pickup to the Cruise-In, an event he enjoys behind the scenes as a volunteer, as well as being front and centre as a participant. “You don’t have to be a car buff to enjoy this event. It’s an extremely lively and fantastic way to look at history and understand how central vehicles and cars are to all of our lives. Even if you don’t care about vehicles at all, you’ll find something that will be truly amazing and be very impressed with the time and effort put into caring and restoring these vehicles.” n

“In business for over 20 years, we are a full service automotive shop specializing in brakes, exhaust and custom exhaust. We work on all makes and models of vehicles.”

If they want to treat me like one of the boys, well that’s just fine with me.” Walton was raised on a farm in Truro, N.S., where she became a fan of cars at a young age. “I was likely to be found playing with toy cars, rather than dolls,” she said. “My cousins and I would spend hours just sitting around and naming all the cars that drove by on the farm roads: the Chevys, the Fords and the Chryslers — by grade school I knew almost every car on the road.” While Walton has exhibited Annie at

car shows throughout Greater Vancouver region, the Langley Good Times Cruise-In is her all-time favourite show as both a spectator and participant. “The Cruise-In is one of my saviours, it’s what I live for,” she said, noting her disappointed when the event was cancelled in 2010. “Well, that was pretty tragic. I’m just so relieved it is back on.” In addition to being surrounded by a variety of some of North America’s most beautiful cars, Walton is a big fan of the Cruise-In’s festival atmosphere. “There’s just so much variety, so many things to do,” said Walton, who hopes to secure her regular spot in front of Choo Choo’s restaurant in downtown Langley this weekend. “You party all night and then are up staging the next morning at 4:40 a.m., but I don’t mind at all. You don’t go there to sleep, after all.” n

Come for the cars, stay for the fun – Tourism aTTraCTions in Langley With thousands of classic cars taking over the Downtown Langley core, so too will the tourists. Deborah Kulchiski, executive director of Tourism Langley, says that Cruise-In is the perfect opportunity for people lured to Langley by the car show to explore the area and find out what the community is all about. "People may build their vacation plans around (Cruise-In) and stay in our community and in our region. But we also have the opportunity to encourage people to stay in Langley longer than they may have originally planned," she said. Kulchiski says that festivals and events hold a significant impact on the community and on local businesses. Something as large and distinctive as Cruise-In gives a certain brand to Langley and helps to establish it as an enticing place to visit. "Events such as Cruise-In strengthen communities, because it is a unique activity," she said. "It helps us build awareness to Langley."

Beyond attracting foreign visitors, Kulchiski believes the Cruise-In is very positive for local residents as well. "It also ultimately is not just an economic benefit, but events also contribute to the quality of life for residents," she said. By showing off Langley's greatest features, "it helps with community pride," she said. When you've finished admiring cars, head over to the many other attractions Langley has to offer. The Village of Fort Langley has many unique shops and restaurants in an historic setting. Step into the past at the Fort Langley National Historic Site (23433 Mavis St.), where costumed interpreters relive the glory days of fur trading along the Fraser River. Walk through original heritage buildings and discover the art of barrel making, gold panning and blacksmithing. Then visit the Fort Langley Heritage CN Rail Station on the corner of Glover Road and Mavis

Street to admire the 1915 Station and Simpson Garden, a 1930 Speeder and Speeder shed, a 1900 velocipede, a 1920s caboose and a 1947 railcar. Afterwards explore the Langley Centennial Museum and BC Farm Machinery and Agriculture Museum on King Street to see how pioneers started the vibrant town that thousands of residents call home today. If that's not enough for the history buff in your family, visit the Canadian Museum of Flight (Hangar #3 5333 216 St.), to sneak a peak at more than 25 aircraft, including the rare Second World War Handley Page Hampden and T-33 Silverstar. If wining and dining is more your style, visit some of Langley's exquisite vineyards. Domain de Chaberton Estate Winery (1064 216 St.), the Fort Wine Co. PROJECT

Hank van Winkel’s 20-year restoration project has been a real labour of love. It seems like just yesterday that the father of two brought home his cherished ride, a 1929 Ford Tudor, which was basically just a heap of rusty old parts. “They dragged it out of the bushes somewhere in Regina,” said the Vancouver resident, who purchased the car at The Old Car Centre in Langley in 1977. “It took three pickup trucks just to load it home. The engine had seized, the wood was all rotten and there was no roof — it was a basket case.” It wasn’t long after the semi-retiree brought the project home that he and his wife began to expand their brood. “My daughter was born in 1979 and my son in 1982. As the kids grew, the money we would have saved for

the car went to them. I didn’t get it on the road until 20 years later — I don’t think my wife even thought of it as a car until I got it painted.” Van Winkel did most of the restoration work on the car himself — an accomplishment he takes great pride in. “I went to night school to learn to do the bodywork,” he said. “All of the parts are from an old Mustang that I purchased.” However, he did receive assistance from some little helping hands along the way. “I can remember my kids helping me sand it down when they were just five and eight. Wow, it’s been a long time.” While the original paint job was dark blue and black, van Winkel decided to have the Tudor painted an eyecatching hue — Murano red. “It certainly does ➤

Worth the Wait turn a lot of heads,” he laughed. It’s also no trailer queen. Van Winkel takes his car out to run errands without hesitation. “This is a weekend fun car,” he said matter-of-factly. “Anytime the sun comes out, it’s the car I drive. I’ll take it shopping to Home Depot or the grocery store, it doesn’t matter.” On several occasions, van Winkel has come out of a store to find a small crowd admiring his hot wheels. “The fun part is when you find people leaning on it, having their picture taken.” Van Winkel enjoys any excuse to show off his ride and the Langley Good Times Cruise-In is no exception. He is counting down the days until he can park his car on the main drag in downtown Langley and catch up with all the classic car buffs he has met over the years.

Kristyl Clark, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER

“I’ve been to the Cruise-In three out of the past 15 shows,” said van Winkel. “It’s really nice to talk to everyone who has the same hobby and to see what kind of car they have and what they’ve done to it.” While there is a huge variety of cars at the show, the 1929 Tudor is a real rare breed, according to van Winkel. “A lot of the cars seem to be getting into the mid-to-late ‘60s — you see fewer and fewer of the older cars every year. The last time I was parked between a row of newer Camaros, so I looked pretty strange among the bunch. But hey, car guys are car guys, it doesn’t matter what you drive.” n

Taking the WHEEL Big wheels will continue to keep on turning at the Langley Good Times Cruise-In, as long as there are volunteers like Gordon Stebanuk and his wife Audrey to steer it full speed ahead. The Langley couple have dedicated tireless effort throughout the year to making the annual auto event a show that is quickly garnering an international reputation a huge success. “I really enjoy volunteering," said Gordon, who has been lending a helping hand at the Cruise-In for the past 13 years. "You get to see some great cars, meet a lot of different people and help some important local charities." The semi-retired 70-year-old, who runs a mobile welding and mechanic company, stages the cars in the Kwantlen Polytechnic University parking lot at the crack of dawn before they are sent to park. Audrey may be retired, but she is certainly no side-passenger when it comes to her husband's philanthropy. The proud grandmother is also a big fan of classic cars and has two important volunteer roles at the CruiseIn as secretary and director. Audrey took over the latter position after filling in for a friend who never returned to her post. "She was sick and never did get better so I took over and have been do-

ing it ever since," she said matter-offactly. While there are several volunteers who have helped out since the event's inception, like the Stebanuks, the next generation will have to step up to the plate for the show to motor on, according to Gordon. "A lot of us volunteers are getting up there in age, it has been a lot of the same people doing the same job year after year. If they enjoy the cars and want to keep it going, the newer generation has got to take over. Otherwise, it's going to be lost." And, volunteering for the Cruise-In is no casual feat; it's a year-long commitment, according to Gordon. "When the Cruise-In is over, our work is just beginning. We are right back at it planning the next show. It's hard work, but it's also a lot of fun. You meet a lot of great people." Gordon has been fascinated with cars all of his life, but it wasn't until their kids grew up and moved out of the house that his hobby blossomed into a full-blown love affair. "Gordon has always enjoyed restoring his cars, he takes great pride in them," said Audrey. "It's really nice to get up on a Sunday and go cruising in a 1959 convertible. My granddaughters really love it too." The Stebanuks own a pretty impressive fleet of hot wheels, which includes a matched set of Chrysler ➤

"It's one big party room," said Audrey, who has hosted many celebrations for friends, family and several car clubs. "We all work really hard and feel exhausted when it's over, but we feel great for what weíve done." Like her husband, Audrey hopes the Cruise-In will attract more volunteers in the years to come. "We want volunteers of all ages, even the old diehards like us," she laughed. "There are all kinds of things volunteers can do. Even if you can't give your time, donations go a long way." n

Meet the GATEKEEPER

TOWN CENTRE

KRISTYL CLARK, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER

Barricade crews are a key element in making sure the Langley Good Times Cruise-In runs smoothly. They respond to visitor questions, assist in traffic flow around town and ensure that parking and event rules are adhered to. It’s a big job, but Wayne Patterson is happy to stand guard. The Langley Rotarian will once again be manning the gates and barriers with a team of volunteers for an event that attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators to Langley City’s downtown core. While the Cruise-In has always operated like a well-oiled machine, there’s the odd speed bump along the way, according to Patterson. “All cars have to pay a registration fee to be in the event, this is why we have barricades, and security,” said the father of two who has been vol-

unteering for the Cruise-In for three years. “In past years, the casino parking lot has been an issue because we did not use the complete parking area. Cars would sneak in past unmanned barricades and when we were asked to move and go register, there was an argument.” Last year, there was one person looking after the parking lot of the casino, this year there are six personnel and an area supervisor, he added. “We are putting a few more people out there to turn people around and put more money back into the charities because that’s what the event is all about.” Patterson is often surprised to hear that there are still many spectators who don’t realize that every cent that goes into the Cruise-In’s official charities.

“The fact that all proceeds go to charity, well, that’s really something to be proud of.” The Cruise-In is always in need of volunteers, but Patterson is pleased with the number of individuals and groups he has signed up this year to work the barricades. “We have had more groups getting together, like a couple of soccer club that will look after a barricade. We’ve actually had to turn some people around who wanted to volunteer for gate time.” Patterson, a branch manager for United Rentals in Langley, grew up around muscle cars. “My dad got me under the hood of cars very young and it grew from there into an expensive hobby.” Patterson’s impressive fleet of muscle cars includes a 71 Buick Block Chevy Nova, Porsche, Transam and

a Dodge Challenger - The latter is his latest project. Volunteering at the Cruise-In is a lot of work, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t time for play. “I just really enjoy the fellowship of everyone down there,” said Patterson, who has met some interesting people at the Cruise-In over the years. “Everyone has a story to tell the car people, the volunteers. It’s a great event.” This year, Patterson is looking forward to sunny skies, a big turnout and a vast array of unique automobiles. “It sounds like it’s going to be another stellar year. According to the longterm weather forecast we are going to have some great weather, there will be some new cars and items to show off to everybody.” n

JIM MCGReGOR, LANGLeY tIMeS CRUISe-IN RePORteR

Summer is here and along with that comes many opportunities to display your classic vehicle across the province. How do you decide which ones to attend? In this day and age, most people sit down at the computer and type in the name of the show and, if the promoters have done their homework, everything you need to know will pop up at your fingertips. Jim Robinson from WPX Web Design in Langley designs the Langley Good Times Cruise-in website. Over the years the information on the site has expanded from pictures of the previous year’s event to providing on-line registration, site maps of the event, a list of sponsors with links to their business profiles and information on the volunteers and Directors. “The site gets busy as the summer approaches,” says Jim. “We mea-

sure the effectiveness by the number of new visitors each month and we make sure that’s when the new information is available.” Director Lori Watts is pleased with the upgrades to the site. “Adding the Frequently Asked Questions feature and providing a Guest sign – in page has allowed us to become more interactive with those people who have been to the show or are coming for the first time. The site is accessed by people from all over the world and many tourists make the show an annual destination or have attended it while on vacation.” The website for the Langley Cruisein is: www.langleycruise-in.com n

MIRANDA GATHERCOLE, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER Since Cruise-In began in 1997, more than $1.1 million has been raised for local non-profits. The show is far more than a flashy get together of expensive hot rods, as it serves as an invaluable source of donations for many community groups. When the show took a one-year hiatus in 2010, the charity beneficiaries felt the pinch, with some having to scale back operations because of it. But, with its triumphant return in 2011, Cruise-In raised $86,000 for the Langley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Langley Stroke Recovery and Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Association, creating a much needed cushion for them. This year, the three organizations have once again been selected as the beneficiaries, and are grateful for the continued support from car enthusiasts throughout the province.

Cruise-In Langley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Based solely on volunteers, the Langley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is an integral part of the Langley Memorial Hospital. As one of the major sources of funding for the hospital, the donations they raise are used to directly support patients through the purchasing of new hospital equipment, and other volunteer duties. Places such as the hospital gift shop, lotto booth, vendor tables and Penny Pincher Thrift Shop on 56 Avenue are all run by auxiliary volunteers. "It's a very generous donation we get from the Cruise-In and every penny given is directed back to the hospital in equipment," said Diane Thornton, president of the Langley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. The majority of donations go into the purchasing of new hos- ➤

The Auxiliary usually does two pledge drives per year, in June and December, where they will purchase equipment based on a wish list provided by the hospital. With the help of money received from Cruise-In last year, the auxiliary was able to buy new blood pressure machines, new hospital beds and upgrade medical imaging machines. This year they hope to use donations from the show to help fund a maternity clinic expansion at the hospital. The organization usually gets most of its funding through the Penny Pincher Thrift Shop, donations in memory of loved ones, bequests from estates, grants and cash donations, so extra support from the Cruise-In gives them even more means to help the hospital. "Cruise-In gives a significant dona-

tion to us and one we are grateful for," Thornton said. "They are our biggest private sponsor." Beyond providing much needed donations to the Auxiliary, the CruiseIn also helps to advertise the organization to thousands of people. "The Cruise-In is such a great community event," Thornton said. "It gets so many people out from the community, and the fact that we're a part of that brings more public presence to us as well — it gets our name out there, gets our cause out there. We appreciate that as well as the financial donations." Visit the Langley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary tent at McBurney Plaza during the Cruise-In for information on the organization and volunteering opportunities. Local charities the big winners Langley Stroke Recovery The Langley Good Times Cruise-In is the main supporter of Langley Stroke Recovery, and without them the organization would not be able to stay afloat, says Marilyn Piticco, co-ordinator of Langley Stoke Recovery. "They love our program and the reason we have been able to be there is because of them," she said. "We just would not have been able to do it without them." A branch of the Stroke Recovery Association of BC, Langley Stroke Recovery provides support and services for stroke survivors to integrate back into normalized life. Focusing on improving areas of mobility, speech and communication, mental stimulation and counseling, the organization truly adheres to their slogan, 'there is hope after stroke.' "Recovery from stroke does happen," Piticco said. "They can get their speech back, moving their arm again can happen, and walking with a walker instead of sitting in a wheelchair can happen." Because of past support from the Cruise-In, Langley Stroke Recovery has been able to expand their programs to offer better rehabilitation resources for stroke survivors. Beginning as just a one day a week operation, Piticco increased this to two days a week and then three. She was able to create a new website, extend the time of speech therapy sessions, hire counsellors and create resource office hours at the Walnut Grove Community Centre, where they are located. "Because of having their funding for so long, the continuity has allowed me to plan and dream and make the organization what it should be," Piticco said. However, because Cruise-In was cancelled in 2010, she had to decrease operations back to only two days a week. Now, even with Cruise-In support last year, Langley Stroke Recovery still has not managed to recover fully. They are still operating at two days a week, and had Cruise-In been

cancelled again, this would have been scaled back to one day. "We're still short $5-$10,000 in operations. The Cruise-In covers a huge amount, it really helps us, but we still need to find more," Piticco said. "We do the best we can with other smaller donations, but we're still not at the point where we're fully funded." Cruise-In truly is the lifeline that keeps Langley Stroke Recovery alive, Piticco said. "I was always praying that someone would come along and do a big fundraiser for us, and we were so lucky to be chosen by the Cruise-In over the years," she said. Stop by the Langley Stroke Recovery tent on Cruise-In day to learn more about their programs and stroke recovery. "We can't say enough about Cruise-In, they have done so much," Piticco said. For more on Langley Stroke Recovery, visit www.langleystrokerecovery.com. Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Association Helping hospital patients and stroke survivors, the Langley Good Times Cruise-In will also once again be benefitting clients of The Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Association. Providing assistance for special needs children and adults, VTEA offers therapeutic horseback riding to boost physical, mental and emotional well being. Siobhan McKenzie, office coordinator at VTEA explains: "It's practising hippotherapy which utilizes a horse for physical exercise. For example, this is great for someone confined to a wheelchair who does not have use of their legs. When they're on a horse, the horse's movement actually stimulates the exact same movement as a human walking. It helps develop muscle tone, upper strength and body core strength that would not be developed because they are confined to a chair. It really develops a lot of muscles that wouldn't be used otherwise. That's the physical part. But it

Supplement to the Langley Times | September 8, 2012 Supplement to the Langley Times | September 8, 2012

also builds confidence and provides a sense of freedom." With 80 to 100 clients in their programs each year, donations to VTEA go directly to benefit the riders. "The money goes wherever it is most needed," McKenzie said. This includes running the programs and caring for the 13 horses they currently have, from vet bills to feeding and shoeing them. All of their clients pay a subsidized fee for their classes, which is up to 50 per cent cheaper than regular trail rides. McKenzie says this is to account for extra financial strain that is placed on families caring for children and adults with disabilities. Since receiving their donations from last year's Cruise-In, VTEA has been able to build five new stalls for their horses, purchase feed and pay for other expenses such as grain and farrier bills. Hay alone costs $12,000 a year, so any extra donations go a long way. "It's hard to fathom how much everything costs," McKenzie said. "The donations from Cruise-In are huge — they're one of our largest donators, and we are extremely grateful." VTEA primarily runs private classes, where the program is individually tailored to the specific rider. However they also offer some group classes for returning clients who are more experienced riders. "We have 10 acres of trails, they're beautiful. They're sensory trails, and especially for a kid with autism this is huge," Mckenzie said. "There's lots to capture their eyes and stimulate their imaginations." McKenzie says that it's supporters like the Cruise-In that keep their programs going. "We run month to month, and being a non-profit we definitely struggle," she said. "Every penny counts. It's 100 per cent significant." For more on Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Association, visit www.vtea.ca. n
