MP David Wilks presented eight Diamond Jubilee Medals to Cranbrook and Kimberley residents on Thursday. The ceremony was held during the regular weekly luncheon of the Cranbrook Rotary Club at the Heritage Inn on August 30. Six Cranbrook residents and two Kimberley residents were honoured, in front of a crowd which included Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett, Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski, Kimberley Mayor Ron McRae, loved ones of the recipients, and Rotary members. The commemorative medal marks the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne. Sixty thousand Canadians will be chosen to receive the award this year, a tangible way for Canada to honour the queen and, at the same time, honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. From Cranbrook, medals were given to Garry Anderson, Orville Anderson, James Hong, Scott Manjak, Liz Schatschneider, and Heather Smith. Kimberley residents Don Wallace and David Ekskog were also recognized with the Diamond Jubilee Medal. FLATHEAD FEAST: Nearly 100 people gathered at the Canada/U.S. border in the Flathead River Valley for the ‘Flathead Feast’ on Monday, August 20, to celebrate the transboundary Flathead River Valley and call for its permanent protection. Wildsight and other conservation organizations are calling for a National Park in the southeastern one-third of the B.C. Flathead. They are also urging the B.C. government to agree to a Wildlife Management Area in the rest of the Flathead and adjoining habitat, to preserve a link in a wildlife corridor stretching from Glacier National Park to Canada’s Rocky Mountain parks. The Flathead Feast was the culmination of 10 days of activities in the B.C. Flathead, including a Bioblitz, an artist retreat and artist workshop, and a celebration of a 2011 legislated ban on mining and energy development in the B.C. Flathead. People gathered on each side of the defunct border crossing, sharing conversations and food.

Banishing bumps, putting paid to potholes
Local roads ripped up in seasonal repairs S a l ly M a c D o n a l d Townsman Staff
Road crews are busy ridding Cranbrook of a few potholes as roadworks season carries on. Five major projects are underway around the city as road repairs are performed, ranging from repaving to complete reconstruction. Work is substantially complete on two of those projects, which make up the city’s Priority 1 list for the 2012 season. The section of 1st Street South between 9th Avenue and 11th Avenue has been repaved after improvements were made to the storm sewer. “They put a glass grid between the two layers of asphalt,” said Chris Zettel, corporate communications offi-
cer for the City of Cranbrook. “They are hoping that will help increase the longevity of the paving. It might add a few years to the integrity of the asphalt.” The sidewalk on 1st Street South from 11th Avenue to 14th Avenue was also replaced during this project. Also essentially complete is the repaving of 21st Avenue North between 12th Street North and Kootenay Street North, behind Canadian Tire. “Drivers will likely notice there is some missing asphalt on 12th Street North,” said Zettel. “They are going to do some repaving work there and there will be some storm sewer work in there done in relatively short order.”
With that work done, contractors are now focusing on three significant projects around Cranbrook, which won’t be complete until October 31. The most noticeable one, at least for residents of the Southview area, is the section of 14th Avenue South from 10th Street South to 13th Street South. It’s the continuation of work on 14th Avenue that was completed up to 10th Street over the past several years. The work includes storm sewer improvements, curb and gutter, a multi-use path and repaving. What’s more, the city is using a new system called “bioswale” to redirect rain water that runs down the slope. “In the past, when there has been a lot of

There has been a lot of running water coming down there,” explained Zettel. “What this ‘bioswale’ is intended to do is create little storage ponds all the way down to slow the water down a little bit. There is going to be grasses and some shrubbery in there, and a honeycomb style catch basin to slow the water down so it can get taken away without running down the street and causing issues.” Over on 2A Street South between 17th Avenue South and 20th Avenue South, near Laurie Middle School, the road is being completely reconstructed. “That’s everything from your water line, sanitary sewer line, storm sewer, paving, the whole nine yards,” said Zettel. Finally, by Gordon

It really needed to be done.” There was a sixth project on the Priority 1 list this year: two blocks of the major east-west artery 2nd Street South, starting at the highway. However, the scope of the five other projects was more significant than the city expected, so 2nd Street South will have to wait till next year, Zettel explained. “Overall, the work has been going really well. Residents in general have been really cooperative and supportive and understanding of the delays,” he said. “We certainly appreciate them being cooperative and sup-
portive. The end result is they are going to have a nice street to drive on when we are done.” The city budgeted $2.8 million on roadworks this summer. When the list was approved in April, Mayor Wayne Stetski said council would like to spend more, but it’s just too expensive. He added that the city’s road asset deficit – what the city would need to spend to ensure that all city streets are up to standard – is $19 million. Every $200,000 the city adds to its budget translates to a 1 per cent increase in taxes. “I’ll leave it to you to figure out what kind of tax increase would be required to cover just the road deficit. There are deficits in sewer and water as well. It is a long term challenge for council and for taxpayers,” said Stetski.

Pete Durning, owner of Mission View Moving and Storage, is busy rearranging offices at the Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce this week. The building is halfway through a $160,000 renovation by Living-Stones Developments that will create five additional offices for the Chamber, the Blue Lake Society, the BC Hydro Livesmart program and the Sam Steele Society. The work, which uses a $42,500 grant from Columbia Basin Trust, is expected to be complete within a month.

This is a great opportunity for would-be cowboys and cowgirls to spend a week in an authentic dude ranch environment.

Three more B.C. Liberals bowing out Tom Fletcher Black Press
Shuswap MLA George Abbott has confirmed he is following his fellow B.C. Liberal leadership contender Kevin Falcon into political retirement. Chilliwack MLA John Les also announced Thursday that he will not run in the 2013 election, and a Children and Family Development Minister Mary McNeil released a statement saying she has made the same decision. Falcon, the three-term MLA for Surrey-Cloverdale, resigned as finance minister Wednesday. Premier Christy
Clark said all MLAs have been asked to declare their intentions by the end of the summer, and she will unveil a cabinet shuffle next week. Abbott said he expects to be dropped from cabinet as the B.C. Liberal election team is assembled, but he plans to continue to work on the election platform as he serves out his fourth term as MLA. With a total of 33 years in elected office at the local and provincial level, and at age 59, Abbott said he will not be making any comebacks in the future. Abbott served as health and aboriginal relations minister and is currently educa-
tion minister. McNeil, elected MLA for Vancouver-False Creek in 2009, was appointed to the children’s ministry by Clark last year. Les issued a statement from his constituency office, saying it was a difficult decision to leave a political career that started as a Chilliwack councillor in 1983 and four terms as a B.C. Liberal MLA. A former public safety minister, Les has most recently served as parliamentary secretary to the premier. “I trust I have been able to represent the people of Chilliwack well and hope they will forgive any short-
comings on my part,” Les said. Falcon, Les and McNeil have all confirmed they will serve out their current terms until the election set for May 2013. Premier Christy Clark issued a statement praising all three retiring MLAs. Commenting on Falcon’s decision Wednesday, Clark downplayed the departures and said the turnover offers a chance for renewal. NDP leader Adrian Dix contrasted the departure of former leadership candidates Abbott and Falcon with his team, where his leadership rivals Mike Farnworth
and John Horgan are staying on along with former leader Carole James. Dix agreed with Abbott’s assessment that Clark is a great campaigner, but added that doesn’t change the fact that the main government initiative since the 2009 election is the rejected harmonized sales tax. “What B.C. needs is a better government, not a better campaigner,” Dix said. Other B.C. Liberals who have announced they are not running again include Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Kevin Krueger, BurnabyLougheed MLA Harry Bloy, Vancouver-Fairview MLA
Kash Heed, Surrey-Tynehead MLA Dave Hayer, Saanich North MLA Murray Coell and Penticton MLA Bill Barisoff. Former cabinet ministers Barry Penner and Iain Black resigned their seats last year and have been replaced by NDP MLAs in a pair of byelections. Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen quit the B.C. Liberal Party in March and joined the B.C. Conservatives. NDP MLAs Dawn Black (New Westminster) and Mike Sather (Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows) have announced they are retiring next year, and Dix said there may be more.
‘Culture of delay’ blamed for B.C. court backlog: review C anadian Press
VANCOUVER — A “culture of delay’’ exists within British Columbia’s justice system that encourages defence lawyers, Crown prosecutors and even judges to act in ways that contribute to unacceptable backlogs in the courts, a government-ordered review has found. Lawyer Geoffrey Cowper, appointed in February to examine why so many cases take months, if not years, to make their way through the courts, has released a 270page report on his findings. He makes a number of recommendations to fix that problem, many focusing on ensuring cases are resolved early, well before a trial date is even set. He does not make any recommendations on the level of funding for the justice system and rejects a recommendation by the provincial court that 18 new judges be appointed. Cowper says the system is currently designed as if every
case is destined for trial, when in fact 98 per cent of cases in provincial court are resolved without a trial. But despite that reality, he says neither the defence nor the Crown are encouraged to work early in the process towards reasonable pleas or sentences, resulting in courts that are poorly utilized as cases that are scheduled for trial are cancelled at the last minute. “Not only does delay undermine public confidence in the system, but a culture of delay rewards the wrong behaviour, frustrates the well-intentioned, makes frequent users of the system cynical and disillusioned, and frustrates the rehabilitative goals of the system,’’ Cowper writes. The debate over court resources boiled over last year in the face of what lawyers and judges lamented were lengthy delays. Last year, more than 100 cases were stayed because of court delays, and when
Cowper began his review, there were roughly 2,500 cases before provincial court that had been there for more than 18 months. At least two judges used decisions from the bench to criticize the provincial government for underfunding the justice system, particularly when it came to the number of judges currently sitting. Cowper says there has been a reduction in that backlog recently, but he says the system is currently not meeting the expectations of victims, suspects or the public in resolving cases in a timely manner. The report says the government should set a Criminal Justice and Public Safety Council that would draft a province-wide justice plan that would implement reform, set timeliness goals and develop a system to track whether those goals are being met. He says individual Crown prosecutors should be as-
signed to take “ownership’’ over files from the outset, and legal aid lawyers should be assigned to particular court locations so they deal with the same offenders. Such a change, says Cowper, would require a prosecutor to make a reasonable offer on sentencing early in a case. That would discourage an accused person from waiting until the
first day of trial in the hopes that he or she may receive a lighter sentence for a guilty plea or that no-shows among witnesses would jeopardize the case, he says. The report doesn’t make any recommendations about the level of funding for the justice system, and in what will likely be a controversial conclusion, he rejects the provincial court’s request for
18 new judges. Instead, he says five new judges should be appointed to immediately deal with the current backlog and concludes other reforms designed to use court time more efficiently will make significant increases in judicial appointments unnecessary. He also recommends more money for legal aid.
Man pleads guilty to sled dog slaughter Canadian Press
NORTH VANCOUVER, B.C. — A man charged with the slaughter of more than 50 sled dogs near Whistler, B.C., two years ago has pleaded guilty to a charge of causing unnecessary pain and suffering to animals. Sled dog operator Robert Fawcett entered his plea while standing next to his lawyer in a North Vancouver court, while outside, about a dozen animal rights advo-
cates gathered, calling for a prison sentence for Fawcett. Fifty six dogs were dug up in a mass grave near the 2010 Olympic Village after details of the cull leaked out through a post-traumatic stress disorder claim made by Fawcett through worker’s compensation. The compensation documents described a bloody scene of how the dogs were shot or had their throats slit
before being dumped in the grave site. The slaughter prompted the B.C. government to bring in tough new anticruelty laws to protect sled dogs, with penalties that include fines up to $75,000 and two years of prison time. The Crown prosecutor has asked for a psychological assessment for Fawcett, who is expected to be sentenced in November.

An interesting conference is scheduled for Kimberley the weekend of September 14, 15 and 16, 2012 at Centre 64. The Whitebark Pine Ecosystem Foundation (WPEF) willl host its annual Science and Management Workshop in Kimberley this year. The Whitebark Pine Ecosystem Foundation of Canada is devoted to the promotion and conservation of ecosystems by supporting resto-
ration, education and research projects that enhance the knowledge and stewardship of these valuable ecosystems. WPEF’s annual gatherings are an opportunity to increase awareness and understanding of high elevation pines. Sponsored by Columbia Basin Trust and Teck, the Kimberley meetings will feature some interesting guest speakers and field trips. Friday’s daytime session will include more than a dozen presenta-
tions on issues including ecology, decline status, management, federal listing developments, and restoration. On Friday evening, September 14, at 7 p.m. there will be a presentation about the declining forest’s effects on birds and grizzly bears. Guest speakers are Dr. Michael Murray, BC Ministry of Forests, Forest Pathologist; Kate Kendall, Grizzly Bear Biologist, Glacier National Park; and Dr. Diana Tomback, Wildlife Biologist, University
of Colorado. The public is invited to attend this session. Admission is by donation. On Saturday, September 15, there will be two field trips. Conference guests will either travel to the summit of Puddingburn Mountain (elev. 7,626 feet) which supports a variety of whitebark pine stands and alpine larch; or travel to the nearby Findlay Creek area to see examples of both limber and whitebark pine restoration work.
On Sunday, another field trip is planned, this time a hike into alpine larch stands. Randy Moody, a director of the Foundation, says that up to now 50 people have signed up for the conference, most being biologists from western Canada and the United States. Just over a year ago East Kootenay Foundation for Health was working on its marketing plan for “A Clear View” digital mammography campaign. That plan included the concept of Faces of the Campaign and the first two individuals to step forward to showcase their story were Sue Selby and her daughter Stephanie. A trip to Idlewild Park had photographers Chris Pullen and Cassidy Shankowsky of Cranbrook Photo pulling out all the stops to capture the essence of the spirit of a breast cancer survivor and one of her closest supporters. What wasn’t known at the time of the photo shoot was that the very next day Sue and Stephanie would be making their way to Calgary for Sue to undergo a stereotactic biopsy since the equipment was not available in Cranbrook. Her courage, hope and strength to face breast cancer a second time left an indelible mark on Sue’s husband Roger. “Sue has always been a very positive person, and facing breast cancer not once but twice she has moved me deeply as she has refused to let this disease affect her life negatively,” he said. Roger also said his wife’s first biopsy was very difficult. When she returned from Calgary he distinctly remembers Sue saying that the stereotactic equipment had made the second biopsy so much easier that she wanted to help someone else and to
make a difference now through not only her profile support of the campaign but also with a $500 gift of financial support. Fast track to a year later and Roger Selby never forgot those words “to help someone else”. The Selby family have recently decided to sell their Fort Steele ranch and move into Cranbrook. It is at this time that Roger did something for the woman who he feels sets a example of living each and every day to the fullest, even with breast cancer. Roger, in honour of Sue and his family who stood firm beside her, donated $10,000 to the A Clear View campaign to help all those other “someone elses”. East Kootenay Foundation for Health returned to Idlewild Park this week to have Cassidy Shankowsky once again capture the essence of the spirit of a breast cancer survivor and this time with a bevy of her supporters — the Selby family. “The journey with the A Clear View campaign has taken me many places but one of the most treasured moments was to witness the love of a family who see their way clear to give back to the community, to others with a breast cancer diagnosis and to a campaign that is going to change lives. I am one of the luckiest people in the world to be a part of something so wonderful,” said Donna Grainger, EKFH Executive Director. The A Clear View digital mammography campaign sits at $855,000 towards it fundraising goal.
Retired serviceman Orville Anderson was given a lifetime membership with the Royal Canadian Legion in 1983, and its highest honour, the Palm Leaf, in 1997. He was the Army Cadet’s Commanding Officer from 1960 to 1970 and 1973 to 1977. He participated in the Queens Guard in 1951. James Hong was born and raised in Cluny, Alberta, where he took over the general store started by his father in 1918 and ran it until 1990. Hong was mayor of Cluny for 25 years, school trustee for 20 years, volunteer fire chief for 25 years, and a lifetime member of the Legion. He is also an honorary chief of the Blackfoot tribe. Scott Manjak was Mayor of Cranbrook from 2008 to 2011, and
councillor from 1999 to 2008. He was chair of the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District from 2003 to 2008. He was instrumental in strengthening the relationship between the City of Cranbrook and the St. Mary’s Band. Liz Schatschneider was heavily involved with the Cranbrook and District Chamber of Commerce from 1995 to 1999, and has organized the Sam Steele Days parade since 1996. She was a Cranbrook city councillor from 1999 to 2011. Schatschneider is a strong supporter of the Kootenay Ice and an overall community minded person. Heather Smith is a long standing member of the Kin Club of Cranbrook, but she is most recognized for the many hours of volunteer work

she has contributed in the community. She volunteers with the Sam Steele Youth Ambassador Program, the Canadian Cancer Society, and the seniors Christmas dinner. Two Kimberley residents were recognized at the Thursday ceremony as well: David Ekskog and Don Wallace. David Ekskog joined the Kimberley Pipe Band at age 11 and has been a member for 49 years. He took over as Pipe Major in 1978 and has not only kept the band alive but nurtured it to thrive.
Now with 30 members, the Pipe Band was invited to attend the International Tattoo in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 2010. Don Wallace joined the Canadian army in 1954 and retired as Lieutenant Colonel. During his tour of duty in Germany, he set up a ski school in Oberjoch, Germany, where he became chief instructor. After leaving the army, he became a dentist and practiced for 30 years in Calgary. He is now a cattle rancher near Kimberley.

We were up at the Estella mine when we saw the hang-gliders in action and I was enchanted, positively drooling. I even got our son interested and I spent a great deal of time looking for places where we might try practicing to fly (read: crash). My beloved had ideas other than me trying to kill her son and said so frequently. We did try water skiing and even purchased a motor boat but I didn’t like the noise of the infernal combustion engine, nor its idiosyncrasies. But I loved wind-surfing (sail-boarding) and became a fanatic. That was more like it; no noise, no fuss, quite a bit of swimming. Sometimes, as I watch people having marvellous times on some of the latest toys I feel jealous but realize that, if they had been invented when I was much younger and agile, there was no way I could have afforded them. The Royal Air Force provided the gliders we flew (read: crashed). My rock-climbing gear was garnered from all sorts of places, not sports stores. The first skis and climbing skins probably came from second hand stores and, I well remember, the first wind-surfer was like my first sailing dinghy, put together using bits of other equipment but, wow, were they ever fun. I wonder if those folk on new parasurfing boards, with brand new, brilliantly hued rock-climbing gear or those powered ultra light planes, have half the fun that I did.

Does it contain some reliable historical information? Of course. There is little doubt of that. But this information is intended not to make a logical argument but rather to persuade people of a larger “truth” that cannot be proved in a laboratory but is finally accepted or not accepted based on its ability to offer a compelling story about the meaning and purpose of the world, God, humanity, and everything in between. I think that, in a significant way, that kind of truth is much bigger, even more important, than facts. Don’t get me wrong — I’m all for facts when it comes to doing my taxes, fixing my car, or boiling water, but when it comes to the things that mean the most to me, facts fall a little short. When it comes to things like the meaning of life, the power of love, the importance of faith, and such things — we simply can’t “prove” any of it. When it comes to the things that really matter to us – that things that we call True (with a capital T), facts aren’t enough. Those things are about how the story has an impact on our lives, and we simply cannot dissect that in a laboratory or prove it for someone else. All we can do is witness to the truth that we experience. And that is the kind of truth that I think the Bible offers us. Does it help us make sense of our lives? Does it help us know the world a little more deeply? Does it help me discern how God might be involved in the world and in our lives? MONTREAL - A large section of the roof of Montreal’s Maurice Richard Arena blew off Thursday, apparently by powerful winds. Police have sealed off a wide perimeter around the east-end rink, which is named after the Montreal Canadiens legendary star. It is not immediately
clear whether or not there were any injuries. Part of the roof has tumbled from the top and the damaged area is about the size of a couple of school buses. A massive, crumpled chunk of metal roof is lying on the ground beside the arena. The sounds of bending, vibrating metal sheets are echoing
through the area. The rink, adjacent to the Olympic Stadium, has served as the home of Canada’s national short-track speedskating team. It opened in the early 1960s, was a venue for events at the 1976 Summer Olympics and has hosted junior hockey over the decades.

After spending a day getting used to their bearings around them, Kootenay Ice prospects got a chance to show off their skills in a game situation during the camp’s first intrasquad scrimmages on Thursday. Team Black had double duty for the day, playing two scrimmages against Team White and Team Blue, winning the first match 8-4 but dropping a 9-4 decision in their second contest. Team White also had a practice in the afternoon under the guidance of Ice head coach Ryan McGill, following their morning scrimmage with Team Black. Area scouts, along with head scout Garnet Kazuik and Kootenay Ice management, watched from the stands during both games as the prospects went at it on the ice. A few standouts for the day include Carter Sawicki, a Team Black player who scored two back-to-back goals in the game against Team White. Sawicki also showed he wasn’t afraid
to drop the gloves and went for a go against fellow prospect Collin Shirley of Team Blue in the second game. Shirley’s light also shone bright during the game against Team Black as the 2011 firstrounder posted three goals and two assists to complete a Gordie Howe hat trick on the road to his team’s victory. Douglas Morris, a 1995-born player who is listed with the club, went on a scoring spree as well, notching a hat trick for Team Blue. Morris only played five games last year due to injury, but came back to make an appearance in the 2012 Telus Cup with his host team, the Leduc Oil Kings. Jesse Wood-Schatz, a late cut from last year’s squad, found the scoresheet twice with a pair of goals for Team Blue. The Blue-Black game also featured more fisticuffs as Stefan Nicholishen took on Ice veteran Joey Leach, while prospect Jordan Steenbergen
fought Ice winger Erik Benoit. Jon Martin, who is returning for his sophomore year in the WHL, scored once for Team White in the tilt against Team Black, a trend he hopes to continue into the regular season. Martin, who came into camp as a prospect last year, says he knows how the young guys are feeling as they battle against each other for attention. “Just play your game,” is Martin’s advice to the young guns. “Don’t take a shift off or anything. Just do what you can do, don’t try to do too much and don’t get nervous or anything. “Just play your game.” Luke Philp, a late cut from the team last year who played in a few call up games throughout the season, is hoping to stick with the club this time around. The 17-year-old played a year with the Canmore Eagles of the AJHL, where he led the team in points with 16 goals and 30 assists. The Eagles had a
tough year, though, losing 39 games and finishing in second-last place in the AHJL regular-season standings. “Our team didn’t do too well, but I thought I played good most of the year and got to develop lots,” Philp said, of the experience. “Lots of ice time, too so that was good. “Sure I would’ve liked to have been here, obviously, but it was good for me to go down and play more, handle the puck more, so I think that’ll help a lot coming into this year because I hope to play more this year and have more of an impact with this team.” While competition for the forward ranks is fierce, Philp is hoping to use last year’s camp as an edge over the next few days. “You just got to keep things simple lots of the times because that’s what they’re looking for,” said Philp, who scored a goal in both scrimmages. “Sure, it’s nice to score goals and stuff, but you don’t have to do anything fancy every play. They just like the simple plays and the less mistakes, the better.”
Raonic advances to third round C ANADIAN PRESS
Another career first for Milos Raonic. The hard-hitting 21-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., defeated Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu 7-5, 6-4, 7-6(4) at the U.S. Open on Thursday, firing 30 aces to advance to the third round here for the first time in his career. More importantly, Raonic is the first Canadian male to get this far in this event in 24 years. Montreal’s Martin Laurendeau, who now captains Canada’s Davis Cup squad, reached the fourth round of the U.S. Open in 1988. Raonic played better Thursday than he did in his opening match against Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo. The Canadian had to rally from a set down and break to
earn the first-round victory. “I played much better today than in the first round, as far as the basics go,” Raonic said. “But I still need to do quite a few things better. “The two breaks I got, I played good points each time. But I wasn’t happy with my return games, I wasn’t doing enough with the ball.” The 15th-seeded Raonic needed two hours 10 minutes to clinch the win. He’ll next face 32-year-old American James Blake, who dominated 24th-seeded Marcel Granollers to win 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. “I do feel good about my game, I’m getting better and better,” Raonic said. “I now have two days to get even better.”

Kimberley Dynamiters set for training camp this weekend Tre vor Cr awley Sports Editor
The Kimberley Dynamiters are kicking off the new season with training camp that officially opens on Friday and runs throughout the weekend at the Civic Centre. Registration begins on Friday evening, which splits up all attendees into three teams that will play two games and undergo rigorous fitness testing over the course of the camp. The Nitros have lost a few players from last year’s roster as Rylan Duley, Mark Strachan, Senate Patton and Richard Hubscher went to college and university hockey, while Jordan
Revie, Colton Vannucci, Bryce Perpelitz and Braeden Ostepchuk committed to playing in other junior leagues. Nitro head coach Roman Vopat is looking forward to getting back on to the ice after turning the club around to a winning season last year and a second-round appearance in the playoffs. He’s also looking forward to getting down to work with Kris Knoblauch, the former Kootenay Ice coach who signed on as an assistant two weeks ago. “We’re looking forward to the start of the season again and just having the addition of Kris Knoblauch coming and helping us tomor-
row and the whole weekend,” said Vopat. “It’s going to pay dividends to our organization and make it a lot easier on me and Jordan [Foreman].” Vopat recently signed locals Jesse Richter and Aaron Shubert, two players who attended the summer identification camp at the end of July, but just because players are signed doesn’t mean they’ll make the team. “They still gotta come and prove themselves,” Vopat said. “So do the veterans. Just because they come back from a previous year doesn’t mean their spots are guaranteed, so that’s why we’re looking to see a lot of energy at camp
and we’ll see how things are going to turn out.” Vopat did some recruiting in Drumheller and Penticton over the off-season, but credits his assistant, Jordan Foreman, for doing the majority of the legwork on reaching out to new players. “I got to say that Jordan Foreman, he did exceptional work,” Vopat said. “He traveled a lot and contacted over 100 kids and I think he did a tremendous job.” Vopat expects that Taylor McDowell, Brett Luker, Corson Johnstone, and Jared Marchi, among others, to step in and fill the leadership gap formed by some of the departing players. “Yes, there will be a
lot of pressure on these boys, but it’s a healthy pressure,” Vopat said. “If there’s no pressure, then there’s no reason to do sports. Every hockey player rises to the occasion, rises to the challenge and I hope the guys I mentioned rise to the occasion and lead the Dynamiters to another successful year.” The Nitros had a turnaround season under Vopat last year, going from 40 points to 74 in the regular season, losing the Eddie Mountain division crown to the Fernie Ghostriders by a single point. The ‘Riders later eliminated the Nitros in a seven game series in the second round of the postseason.

NEW YORK - Andy Roddick is ready to walk away from tennis whenever his U.S. Open ends. The 2003 U.S. Open champion and former No. 1-ranked player surprisingly announced his plans to retire at a news conference at Flushing Meadows on Thursday, his 30th birthday. “I’ll make this short and sweet: I’ve decided that this is going to be my last tournament,” said Roddick, wearing a black T-shirt and baseball cap with his clothing sponsor’s logos. “I just feel like it’s
time. I don’t know that I’m healthy enough or committed enough to go another year,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to, in a perfect world, finish at this event.” The 20th-seeded Roddick is scheduled to play 19-year-old Bernard Tomic of Australia in the second round Friday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium. “I think I wanted an opportunity to say goodbye to people, as well. I don’t know how tomorrow’s going to go, and I hope it goes well, and I’m sticking around,” Roddick said. He was, by turns, in reflective and joking
moods while speaking to reporters about his decision. “If I do run into some emotions tomorrow or in four days, I don’t want people to think I’m a little unstable. Or more unstable,” Roddick said with a chuckle. “So that’s why I came to this decision.” His title in New York nine years ago was the last time an American man won a Grand Slam singles title, and Roddick spoke wistfully - as he often has in the past - about coming to the U.S. Open with his parents as a present he turned 8 years old. He said he’s “been
thinking about (retirement) for a little bit,” and knew for sure that the time to quit was now after his 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 first-round victory over 21-year-old American Rhyne Williams on Tuesday. “I’ve thought all year that I would know when I got to this tournament,” he said, “and when I played the first round, I knew.” In addition to winning his U.S. Open trophy, Roddick also played in four other Grand Slam finals - three at Wimbledon and one at the U.S. Open, losing to 17-time major champion Roger Federer each
time. That included a 16-14 defeat in the fifth set at the All England Club in 2009, when Roddick was saluted by spectators who chanted his name at the end of the match. Roddick’s announcement came one day after four-time major champion Kim Clijsters played the last singles match of her career, a second-round loss to Laura Robson at Flushing Meadows. “I haven’t done this before. I’m sure it’ll be very emotional. I’m sure I’ll still be nervous,” Roddick said, looking ahead to facing Tomic. “I don’t know.”.

NEW YORK - The NHL Players’ Association needed some overtime to work on its next offer in collective bargaining. Donald Fehr, the NHLPA’s executive director, had hoped to table a counter-proposal Thursday but instead called off the session to devote more time to drafting it. The sides are scheduled to resume talks Friday morning. Earlier this week, the NHL put forward a proposal for a six-year contract that would see the players’ share in revenue reduced to 46 per cent - something the union was unwilling to do. However, the league
viewed its second offer as a significant improvement on the initial proposal it tabled July 13, which called for players to receive a 43 per cent share and introduced a number of new contract restrictions. With a Sept. 15 deadline looming for a lockout, deputy commissioner Bill Daly expressed hope the players would be motivated to sweeten the offer they made two weeks ago. “We’re hopeful that it’s a meaningful proposal that we can continue to make progress from,” Daly said Thursday. “We feel like we made a good step in that direction earlier this week and we hope
that they would make a step forward as well.” As of late Thursday afternoon, Fehr had not been made available to the media. There’s a sense negotiations have reached crunch time, especially with the growing possibility the league is heading for its second lockout in as many negotiations. The NHL’s business is essentially on hold while players and teams wait to see if an agreement can be reached in time for training camps to open as scheduled Sept. 21 and the regular season to start Oct. 11. The NHL has said it will lock the players out when the current CBA expires Sept. 15. Daly believes there’s still
enough time to hammer out an agreement before then. “Well obviously the clock is ticking - we’re almost into September now,” he said. “I would say the positive thing is I think both parties are committed . . . to meet as often as it takes to get a deal done, but obviously every day that goes by it’s less and less likely that we’ll be able to come to closure on all of the issues we need to come to closure on.” They haven’t yet got past the first one. The negotiations are now solely focused on the league’s economic system and figuring out how revenues are divided. Even the contract issues have been pushed aside for the
time being. Part of the hangup is a philosophical difference on what the new agreement should entail, with players believing they shouldn’t have to move far from the 57 per cent share they were given in the last deal and commissioner Gary Bettman suggesting Wednesday that number is not “baked in perpetuity.” The sides don’t have any blackout days scheduled in the coming weeks, meaning they could conceivably bargain around the clock. Daly wouldn’t even rule out the possibility of meeting through the Labour Day long weekend - provided they have matters worth discussing.

North of the St. Mary River crossing, travellers following the North Star Rails to Trails encounter an area with a wealth of local history and natural interest. The trail offers a great view of the original headquarters of the Otis Staples Lumber Company, although only a few concrete and stone structures remain. Between 1887 and 1927 it was one of the largest railroad logging operations in this area. Rail spurs were built over much of the territory which included both sides of the Kootenay River. Eventually, 40 kms of track were in operation by six logging railroad companies; evidence of the overgrown grades can be seen today. As one climbs the trail to the north, brushy, semi-open woods with numerous springs and moist areas provide high quality habitat for birds and wildlife. Tall aspen ‘bluffs’, Interior Douglas Firs and Yellow Pines occupy the upper slopes while a variety of shrubs, native grasslands and rocky outcrops supply the local inhabitants with shelter and food. The Western Chokecherry is a conspicuous white-flowering shrub or small tree up to 10 m tall, which is common in thickets, in open woods and along streams. Although often found on exposed locations, it prefers damp ground of fair richness. White clematis and poison ivy are likely
to be growing in the vicinity. When ripe, in August, the fruit is less than 1 cm in diameter, has become red-purple to black and is nearly all stone. These small cherries have a sweetish, astringent taste, and make excellent jelly, pancake syrup and wine. The western chokecherry provides excellent to good forage for deer and elk while the fruit is relished by bears, many species of songbirds, pheasants and grouse. This is also a good erosion control plant because it can form thickets and spread by rhizomes. For this reason, chokecherry makes good screening in campgrounds and picnic sites. While hummingbirds, chickadees, waxwings and sparrows flitted through the brush, the Osprey flew high overhead. This bird is uncommon around any open water that harbours fish. It’s nest is a bulky mass of sticks in dead trees or in other prominent supports near water, and it perches on conspicuous poles or trees overlooking the water. One of the most specialized hawks, the Osprey finds it’s prey by hovering high over open water, then plunging head and feet first into the water. Special barbed pads on the soles of it’s feet help to grip the slippery fish, which the bird carries to a nearby tree to eat. These large, rangy hawks do well around humans and have re-
bounded in numbers following the ban on the pesticide DDT. Hunting Ospreys are a picture of concentration, diving with feet outstretched and yellow eyes sighting straight along their talons. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: We are three daughters who need help. Our parents’ home seems unhappy and full of bitterness. Mom and Dad have been married for 59 years, but Mom doesn’t seem to enjoy life. Dad is not perfect, but we really don’t know their past personal stories and relationship. They seem to have led separate lives: Mom at home with six kids to raise, and Dad working long hours at his business. Since Dad’s retirement, they have settled into a routine of doctor appointments and staying home. Dad no longer wants to do anything, because Mom is constantly telling him that he doesn’t do things correctly. He embarrasses her. Dad has no interest in going places due to his health issues, and Mom doesn’t want him driving much or staying home alone. The constant nagging has created an unhealthy environment. It is difficult to visit because we don’t like to see and hear them like this. We have sat down with them to discuss the situation and offered suggestions, but there has been neither change nor resolution. Counseling is not an option, as Mom seems overly concerned with what others know about her or will think of her. Dad doesn’t seem to be concerned about anything. We don’t want to become the kind of kids who stop seeing their parents. Any suggestions? -- The Girls Dear Girls: When couples retire, they can fall into the trap of doing nothing and getting on each other’s nerves. Mom resents Dad invading her domestic domain, and Dad is depressed because his identity was tied up in his job. And if they have health issues, it can exacerbate the problem because getting out of the house can be problematic or exhausting. It’s a shame your parents won’t address their problems, particularly if they are depressed. We recommend you find ways to get them out of the house, together or separately. Take them out for dinner. Invite Mom to a play. Encourage Dad to attend a ballgame with you. Look into senior programs in their area, and perhaps offer to go with them until they become interested enough to go on their own and, hopefully, make friends. Please don’t give up on them. They need you. Dear Annie: I’m 13 and live with my mom. She always overreacts when my room is not absolutely spotless, which leaves me wondering whether she has OCD. She doesn’t seem to care that the rest of the house is a mess. She seems to magnify the messiness of my room only. When I confront her about this, she gets mad and sends me to my room. I think she wants me to be holed up in there so I’ll see how messy it is. But I don’t. Does she have OCD? How would I know? Help me. -- My Room Is Clean Dear Room: If your mom is only concerned with the mess in your room, it’s probably not OCD. It’s more likely that your room is a little messy. Mom sounds stressed. If you find yourself arguing with her a lot, please consider that the two of you may be pushing each other’s buttons more than you intend. Try talking to her when you are both calm. Explain that you don’t want to fight. Ask how to make things better. If it doesn’t help, please discuss it with your school counselor. Dear Annie: This is in response to “Single Too Long,” the 45-year-old gentleman who is having problems meeting women who have never been married and don’t have children. I would like to mention No Kidding (nokidding.net), an international “social club” for adults, single or married, who never have parented and don’t wish to. Not everyone wants kids, and many of us are surrounded by others constantly trying to change our minds. No Kidding is not a dating site. Isaac sidesteps New Orleans, but thousands flee floods Associated Press
MCCOMB, Miss. — New Orleans’ flood defences appeared to withstand Hurricane Isaac, but thousands of people to the north and south of the city had to be evacuated or rescued as the storm edged inland from the U.S. Gulf Coast with whistling winds and constant rain. At least two deaths were reported. The storm flooded neighbourhoods in a rural part of the state and in neighbouring Mississippi, and it left nearly half of Louisiana without power. The waters continued to rise, even as Isaac, now a tropical storm, meandered northward Thursday toward neighbouring Arkansas. The floodwaters “were shockingly fast-rising, from what I understand from talking to people,’’ Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne said. “It caught everybody by surprise.’’ Many residents had assumed they could ride out Isaac, a lowest-category hurricane. Louisiana officials on Thursday ordered the evacuation of low-lying, sparsely populated areas as a dam on the Tangipahoa River was in danger of failing. Officials feared the swollen river would flood areas near the border with Mississippi, but Mississippi officials said they didn’t think the volume of water would threaten communities. Along the shores of Lake Ponchartrain just north of New Orleans, officials sent scores of vehicles to help evacuate about 3,000 people as rising
waters lapped against houses. Floodwaters rose waist-high in some neighbourhoods, and authorities worked to rescue people stranded in their homes. Isaac arrived exactly seven years after the devastating Hurricane Katrina and passed slightly to the west of New Orleans, where the city’s newly fortified levee system, helped by $14 billion in federal repairs, easily handled the assault. But low-lying areas outside the city were swamped. One person was reported killed in New Orleans, compared with 1,800 deaths from Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi. And police reported few problems with looting. New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu ordered a dusk-to-dawn curfew. A man was killed Thursday morning when a tree fell on his truck in Mississippi. In Plaquemines Parish, a sparsely populated area south of the city that is outside the improved federal levee system, dozens of people were stranded in flooded coastal areas and had to be rescued. The storm pushed water over a 29-kilometre levee and put so much pressure on it that authorities planned to intentionally puncture the floodwall to relieve the strain. By mid-afternoon Wednesday, Isaac had been downgraded to a tropical storm and the Louisiana National Guard ceased rescue operations in Plaquemines Parish, saying it felt confident it had gotten everyone out.
Cooking fumes, smoke lead to unscheduled plane landing Associated Press
VIENNA, Austria — An investigation into why a Lufthansa commercial jet made an unscheduled stop at an Austrian airport last week has arrived at its conclusion: smelly cooking oil. Boris Ogorski, a spokesman for the German carrier, says fumes and smoke from the cooking oil in the jet’s kitchen spread throughout the plane as meals were being warmed, creating a “penetrating odour’’ and sickening

The aircraft — an Embraer 195 with 115 passengers on board — broke off its scheduled flight from Sofia, Bulgaria, to Munich Thursday, landing smoothly instead in the Austrian city of Linz. Passengers then boarded other flights for their destination. Ogorski said Thursday the reason for the unscheduled landing is unusual, “but the crew did the right thing.’’
