Welcome to the Fair

Driving with precision and grace.

“Hats Off to 145 Years!” is our theme and we are featuring “The Tractor”. The Saanich Fair is Western Canada’s oldest continuous agricultural Fair. The Fair provides a wonderful outing for all ages. Come on out and experience the country farm atmosphere and see all our old tractors on display. There are multicultural experiences in eating, a large number of farm animals to see, rides available for the young and feint of heart, entertainment to amuse you, markets, exhibits and more! This year we have ten new entertainers on stage along with some of the past favourites to entertain you the three days. Come and see the new display in Photography called “The Colour Orange”. Check out the kids newly revised KidZone, Farm Fun Passport for kids, Farm Games and three days of continuous horse shows. We have cows, llamas, emus, goats, pigs, sheep, ducks, chickens, pheasants, rabbits, alpacas, donkeys and cavies for all to see. Have trouble finding your car in the parking lot at the end of

Feeding the calf.

your stay – this year we have farm signs posted to show you what area you are parked in. May you have a wonderful stay at our event and plan to come back again.

The District of North Saanich “Since I came to live on the Peninsula, one of the annual events which I have most enjoyed is the three day Saanich Fair. My children looked forward to it every year, loving the animal events and the exhibits. I think it is the emphasis on agriculture and community involvement that makes it so special. The variety of activities, the competitions and the way the event represents the end of summer calls visitors from all over the region. Many North Saanich residents participate in the baking, preserving, food and flower growing competitions. Our children ride horses and show livestock. I very much look forward to seeing the crowds again this year, enjoying the local harvest and greeting one another during these wonderful days.”

Trooper is a mini donkey and will mature under 36 inches tall, and will be at this year’s Fair. Our Convenor of the Donkey Department - Shannon Johnson raised the donkey from birth on which meant feeding day and night. He made a few visits to the Fairground in his diaper and in the back of Shannon’s van. Come visit Trooper and all the gang at the donkey section located behind the swine bar.

The Archers Victoria Folk/Rock band, The Archers, were crowned Youthinks “BC's Best Teen Band” in Vancouver in April 2011, then went on to win Victoria’s “Garage Band Live” title in May 2011. They produced their own EP, "Much More Than Merry Men", in August 2011, and discovered it had national appeal on CBC Radio. They have played events like Rifflandia Festival, TedX and Fringe Festival and are equally at home performing acoustically as they are full band. The five friends creating this unique Indie-Folk/Rock sound include Ethan Caleb, Sandy Hughes, Liam McLaren, Liam Moes and Robert McMullen. They pride themselves in their ability to be multi-talented musicians, songwriters and performers. The Archers share the roles of guitar, piano, bass, drums, mandolin, banjo and multiple other percussion instruments, creating, through this trade off of instruments, an impressive and versatile sound. Audiences enjoy their fresh Folk resonance, compelling harmony, and fantastic energy. The band was formed in early 2010 by Sandy Hughes and Ethan Caleb. After a few months the two songwriters set out to find a drummer and a bass player. Before too long they found a very reliable rhythm section comprised of Liam Moes on drums and Liam McLaren on bass. In September of 2010, Liam McLaren was moved from his role as bass player to playing piano, guitar, and mandolin, and Robert McMullen joined the band as bassist.

“Much More Than Merry Men” has been played on CBC programs such as Definitely Not the Opera, All Points West, Trail End, Radio West, The Bridge, Radio Active and Whitehorse Afternoon Show along with other programs. CBC Resources added the album and the song “Out of My Hands” to a playlist. The Archers album has also been added into rotation on CBC Radio3 and they are Victoria radio station The Zone 91.3FM’s Band of the Month for June 2012. They have performed at Rifflandia 2011, Fringe Festival, and TedX Youth Conference, Victoria’s Canada Day, FolkWest Fundraiser, Earth Day and many high schools and benefit concerts. They have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with musicians such as: Steven Page, Kim Churchill, We Are The City, Doug and The Slugs, Rococode, Mike Edel, and Oliver Swain. They just released their single, Cathedrals, completed a packed 2 week tour of BC and Alberta in May, and opened for Jon and Roy’s CD Release in Vancouver. The adventures have just begun.

The Royal Canadians

Founding members Taylor Allum, drums/perc (Chemainus) and Connor Head, guitar and vocals (Duncan).

Two Island teens – Taylor Allum and Connor Head – have had quite the memorable year since forming The Royal Canadians. The pair released their debut album, Lonely Whale; they opened for Canadian rock legends Chilliwack earlier this year, and they’re quickly making a name for themselves nationally and internationally. Lonely Whale was recorded in Victoria with the assistance of Pat Steward (who’s worked with The Odds, Bryan Adams and Colin James). All 14 songs on the album were written by the teenaged duo. Included on the album were Canadian recording artists Mae Moore and Jean Paul Maurice, and New Zealand singer Anita Prime. The Royal Canadians opened for Chilliwack – best known for their hits My Girl and Fly at Night – when they performed in May at Duncan’s Island Savings Center/Cowichan Theatre. Chilliwack guitarist Bill Henderson had much praise for The Royal Canadians. Taylor, 18, (on drums and percussion) and Connor, 17, (guitars and vocals) are also gaining the interest of music industry professionals in France, after their producer talked them up during the Cannes Music Festival earlier this year. Rounding out their sound on stage is two new additions to the group: Ray Visscher, 18, (on guitar and banjo) and bassist Ryan Scott, 15. This group featuring young talent from Vancouver Island is gaining rave reviews and compliments and cheers from fans and audiences of all ages. They’ve also gained the respect of their professional music peers for putting on a great live show that you don’t want to miss. With no sign of slowing down, The Royal Canadians are destined to continue to make the island proud.

West Coast Amusements West Coast Amusements Ltd. (WCA) is one of the oldest and largest travelling carnivals in Western Canada. Started in 1948 by Bingo Hauser, WCA has grown from an all-animal show with Simba the Lion as the star attraction to the spectacle of rides, games and concessions it is today. Three generations are now actively working in the carnival business, continuing to make West Coast Amusements a leader in the industry. They’ve been a part of Saanich Fair for more than 25 years, providing rides for all ages, games of skill and prizes-everytime games. WCA provides entertainment to thousands of people each year at numerous fairs, rodeos, exhibitions and special events throughout Western Canada. It takes more than 100 trucks to carry the shows from town to town. Being a carnie is not just a career, but a lifestyle, with the majority of life on the road working long hours setting up and tearing down the show in all types of weather. WCA travels more than 24,000 miles each year, visiting about 129 locations. The majority of the season is spent travelling Western Canada from Prince Rupert, to Winnipeg and Fort Nelson to Dallas, Texas.

Laura Lavin/News staff

Karly Moskal, Tisha Mills, Grant McLachlan and Danny Cox get a fast ride on the Super Shot at the Saanich Fair.
