SCHOOL SCENE 2012

Welcome to the 2012/2013 School Year! School District No. 6 (Rocky Mountain) Quest for Quality We would like to welcome everyone to the new school year, on behalf of our Rocky Mountain Board of Education and our Administration staff. Summer is a great opportunity to recharge, and to spend quality time with family and friends; we are so privileged to live and work in this beautiful corner of BC. We trust you are beginning 2012-13 feeling energized and looking forward to the coming year. To our new staff, students and parents, welcome to Rocky Mountain! Our learning community, from Field Elementary in the Yoho National Park, through Golden, Invermere, and Kimberley (and all points in between!) is focused on a “Quest for Quality” that includes a deep care and concern for each and every student, as well as for creating and sustaining working and learning environments where everyone’s contributions are valued. You will see that we “act wisely, care deeply and find joy in each day” and this gives us the grounding that we need to make sure we have done our very best for our students. Please review our 2012-13 Achievement Contract for more information about how our “big picture” achievement goals connect to school plans and to every learner we serve. We are excited to welcome new staff members in District positions this year. In Golden, we welcome Angela Stott as a new Vice Principal at GSS. In Windermere Zone we welcome Jacinda Foulkes who has been looking after

CUPE Payroll for the last few months. We also welcome Charles Myers as a new Network Systems Specialist, serving all three zones. Congratulations to all of you and we wish you all the best in your new roles. We continue to support the Rocky Mountain District Directions 2013 which were developed with input from staff, students, parents and the community. The Focus Areas and Directions that were set are as follows: •Our Culture: Build and maintain a culture of shared values and understanding consistent with our Vision, Mission and Guiding Principles. •Our Students: Be an innovative and responsive educational leader embraced by students and parents. •Our Staff: Be the employer of choice. •Environmental Stewardship: Practice environmental stewardship. •Healthy Living: Expand initiatives to support students, staff and our partners to maintain healthy life-styles. •Community Involvement and Engagement: Work with community partners to develop mutually beneficial educational opportunities. The Board of Education has begun planning the process to develop District Directions 2018, our “stretch goals” for the next 5 year period. Again, this will be a consultative process, involving all our partner groups. More information about this will be circulated in the Fall. On behalf of the Rocky Mountain Board and administration, have a great year! Sandra Smaill, Board Chair Paul Carriere, Superintendent of Schools

Back-to-School Safety It’s as Easy as ABC!

Review these safety tips with your kids before they head back to school. 1. Opt for a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and keep it light. You may want to consider a rolling backpack for heavy books. 2. At the bus stop, wait for the bus to reach a complete stop before approaching it. 3. Stay seated on the school bus until it arrives at your stop, and remember to wear your seatbelt. Always keep your head and arms inside the bus. 4. Use the handrail when exiting the bus, and cross in front of the bus so the driver can see you. Remember to check both ways for traffic before crossing the street. 5. If you walk to school, go with a buddy, and avoid crossing through any empty lots or fields. 6. If you ride a bike or scooter to school, remember to always wear your helmet. 7. Don’t talk to strangers, and never accept gifts or rides from strangers. 8. Cross the street only at designated crosswalks, and obey school crossing guards. 9. If you’re bullied or see somebody being bullied, tell a teacher or trusted adult. 10. Memorize your home address and phone number. In case of an emergency, call 911.

700 - 4th Street • Invermere • 250-342-3060

Open Doors is the senior alternate program for David Thompson Secondary School. Students are 15 years or older. The program offers a flexible timetable to accommodate students’ work and/or family concerns. Much of the curriculum is modularized but some courses are taught in a small group setting. Students do the same courses as DTSS students and write the same Provincial Exams. Students interested in the program should be self-directed and self-motivated. The program has been operating for over 20 years and still follows the philosophy of its founder. He said to students, “If you are not interested in graduating, why bother to come through our door?” This is still the Open Doors program’s attitude. Opportunities in the Open Doors Program include: • An activities program with an emphasis on cardio-vascular health • Individual coursework opportunities

J. Alfred Laird is a school with a staff of exceptional teachers, supportive and dedicated parents, and amazing students. We are proud of the many opportunities our school offers and the positive attitudes we promote. We strive to offer diverse experiences and learning environments for our students, recognizing that many of the most powerful lessons are learned outside of the classroom. Caring for self, others and our world is conscientiously taught and is an expectation of all members of our school community. We want to make our world a better place through words and actions, through critical thinking, questioning, creativity, imagination, and problem solving, and through the development of empathy for others.

The Th 2012/2013 school h l year promises i a continued focus on diverse learning opportunities including an increased emphasis on the arts, French language, social responsibility, technology, fitness, and environmental stewardship. Just up the road from Lake Windermere, in the peaceful village of Windermere, is the ideally located Windermere Elementary School. Well known for our amazing students, highly involved parents and dedicated staff, the environment of the school is immersed in a family-like atmosphere. Intensive French is an enhancement of the Core French program by the creation of a period of intensive exposure to French which enables students to receive up p to four

times the number of hours of instruction normally devoted to Core French in one school year. The teaching strategies focus on interaction and group work, helping the students to communicate orally in French. The Rocky Mountain Distributed Learning School (RMDLS) provides services to all of the communities found within Rocky Mountain School District. The school supports learners from Kindergarten to adults with our three primary programs: Learning@Home, Distributed Learning, and Adult Education. One of our teachers is Becky Blakley, who brings a wealth of experience and positive energy to the school and learners. Becky lives in Radium Hot Springs and has been an educator for 20 plus years. Learning@Home: This program is designed for students who, along with their family, prefer to complete their education primarily from their home. This program also works for students and families who will be travelling during the school year and for those who for medical reasons cannot (or prefer to not) attend a regular school. RMDLS provides the curriculum, learning resources, teacher support while the student and family commits to spending the required time and effort to complete the work. Contact with Mrs. Blakley is made with a combination tion of electronic methods along with faceaceto-face appointments to ensure that hat the student is on track and to provide ide assistance to the family. Students and families who participate in this prorogram must commit to spending the he time required to be successful with th this demanding program choice. ce. There are opportunities with this is program for an element of selffdesign so as to allow families to o take advantage of their particularr situation. Distributed Learning: This iss often referred to as online learning for students taking grades 10 to 12 courses. RMDLS has students from around the province enrolled in both regular academic courses (such as English and Math) and specialized courses such as Equine Studies and Digital Photography. While we do have students at the senior High School level who are only taking courses from us, most of our Distributed buted Learning stu-

dents are taking one or two courses while taking their other courses at their regular High School. Visit our website (getsmartbc.ca) for more information about courses and choices. Adult Education: We have students taking courses from us for a number of reasons. Some of those students work to complete the Adult Dogwood Diploma (which is an actual High School Diploma!) while others work at completing the Dogwood Diploma that they had started but not completed in High School. There are others who take specific courses in order to gain entrance to a post-secondary program, such as taking Biology 12 as a pre-requisite for a Nursing program, or for specific employment situations. Some courses for Adults are free to residents of British Columbia! Ed Main, our District Principal for Distributed Learning and Continuing Education, invites learners of every age to contact Becky Blakley (becky.blakley@ sd6.bc.ca) for further information.
