Traffic cameras going up Thirty new cameras to monitor traffic, weather AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
The Ministry of Transportation is installing 30 new traffic cameras on B.C. highways, including one at the French Creek bridge on Highway 19 reports Parksville-Qualicum MLA Ron Cantelon. The camera was installed on a pole at the southeast end of the bridge, complete with solar panels, a couple weeks ago and the image is expected online at DriveBC.ca this week. “This is really a good thing,” Cantelon said, boasting they will AUREN RUVINSKY PHOTO have 250 webcams on A new traffic camera B.C. highways. installed at the French He said while Creek bridge on weather doesn’t interHighway 19 is expected rupt as many trips on online this week. The accidents happened around 11 a.m. — the ďŹ rst, involving a single vehicle on the Inland highway (Hwy 19) near the Parksville weigh scale. The other was a two-vehicle crash on the East Island highway near the orange bridge. See DRIVERS NOT, page A4

“There was no way to get out of Parksville for about half an hour, which was good for our economy,” said Corporal Michelle LeBrun, after the accidents were cleared up. The first accident involved a truck towing a trailer, where LeBrun said he must have hit the bridge deck, because his trailer came around and jackknifed. There were no injuries, she said, but there was quite a bit of damage to his truck and both lanes of traffic were blocked. Traffic was backed up from this first Parksville exit, where the accident occurred, to the next Parksville exit, in the

With two Parksville Volunteer Fire Department support vehicles up for renewal this year, the department reviewed the most suitable type and recommend sticking with their full-size multi-purpose pickups. Asked by city councillor Bill Neufeld if they considered other options like electric vehicles, chief administrative ofďŹ cer Fred Manson said they routinely do cost/beneďŹ t analysis for the entire eet and are still at least three to ďŹ ve years away from electric vehicles being cost effective. “Other than a display of support for electric vehicles, it is not economically viable for us to purchase them yet.â€? He added they study the decreasing trade-in value versus the increasing maintenance costs and still ďŹ nd it is most economic to trade-in every ďŹ ve years. The report from staff reviewed the use of the basic multi-use pickups over some other form of more specialized single-purpose vehicle for conducting safety inspections. Breaking down the pros and cons, the city staff report concludes that the pickups have “served the department well over past years ‌ (and have) a proven track record,â€? that enables

Truck burns and sets bush ablaze WHISKEY CREEK — A truck caught ďŹ re on Highway 4 near Cameron Lake on Saturday night, Aug. 25, at around 6:20 p.m. According to the Oceanside RCMP detachment, police received multiple calls about the blazing truck, which has been westbound at the time of the ďŹ re. While police were en-
route, the vehicle stopped on Highway 4 near Koen Road. The Hilliers Fire Department were on scene, as a 2007 GMC Sierra pickup truck burned. Flames had spread into roadside bush. The driver, a 57-year-old Surrey man, and his 22 year old son escaped without injury.
The highway was temporarily closed for about two hours as ďŹ re departments and forest ministry staff attended to contain a forest ďŹ re. Emcon and the Ministry of Transportation were also in attendance. The cause of the ďŹ re to the truck is unknown and the driver and passenger lost all of their personal items.
LABOUR DAY Monday, Sept. 3, 2012
There was no damage to other private property. With the recent dry conditions, it would not take long for ďŹ re to spread through the forest. The RCMP in attendance commended the ďŹ reďŹ ghters involved on the excellent job undertaken to contain the ďŹ re to about 3,000 square feet. — Oceanside RCMP

Mayor invited to speak on town’s success Chemainus event wants Teunis Westbroek to share the good news and the future outlook for Qualicum Beach STEVEN HEYWOOD editor@pqbnews.com
Mayor Teunis Westbroek doesn’t take credit for how the Town of Qualicum Beach has taken shape over the years. In fact, he’s quick to point out that it has been the leadership shown by councils, mayors and townspeople before him that have contributed to the town’s current layout and character. He does say that he — and the rest of town council, and the citizens it represents — are only the current caretakers. Future generations, he says, will look back on his and others’ time on council and judge if what they did added to that sense of place. In an interview with THE NEWS on the state of the town, heading into the busy season (children back to school, more council business ahead), Westbroek said it has been a year of celebration in Qualicum Beach — with plenty more to come. Events, such as St. Mark’s Fair marking 40 years, the 100th birthday of The Old School House arts centre building, and more, have been at the forefront this year.

The Town of Qualicum Beach, seen here in an aerial photo taken before changes at the bus garage, is under the care of municipal council — a task mayor Teunis Westborek says he takes seriously.
“So many people come into the town to take in these events, Westbroek said, noting he talks to as many people from out-oftown as he can. “They are here for that one
event sometimes, he said, “but they always say they’ll come back, realizing how nice the town looks. It’s this blend of character, local business and natural beauty

that is the envy of some other Island communities. Case in point, Westbroek, as mayor, has been invited to attend a meeting in Chemainus on September 11, called a Con-
gress on Economic Development through the Arts, Culture and Tourism. He will take part in a mayors’ round table on revitalization and economic development in small towns. In a letter to Westbroek, North Cowichan mayor Jon Lefebure stated Qualicum Beach “is well known for its beauty and commercial successâ€? and asked Westbroek to give a 10 to 15 minute presentation on the town’s success to date and looking forward. “It’s a compliment,â€? Westbroek said of the invitation. Westbroek said he knows there have been plenty of changes in town in recent months, but said he feels in spite of his personal disagreement with some of the issues on the table today, they won’t change the village character of Qualicum Beach — something so many of the town’s founders and leaders worked hard to create. THE NEWS spoke with Westbroek on a variety of current issues in Qualicum Beach — from the ďŹ re hall to village plan. The interview will continue in Friday’s edition of THE NEWS.

B.C. arts, culture grants kept up TOM FLETCHER Black Press
VICTORIA — The B.C. government has provided $16.8 million for community arts and culture grants for the current year, matching last year’s total with help from a dwindling 2010 Olympic legacy fund. Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Ida Chong announced the funding Aug. 13 in Victoria, along with B.C. Arts Council chair Stan Hamilton. The BCAC has juries that assess funding applications, and has already doled out about $6 million of this year’s budget. With less than half the money allocated in Chong’s current ministry budget, another $6.75 million came from the 2010 Sports and Arts Legacy. That $60 million fund was created in the 2010 budget to offset earlier recession-driven cuts to adult arts and sports organizations from provincial gambling revenues. It will be gone after this year, and there is no indication where it might be made

up next year. When the recession hit in 2008, the B.C. Liberal government cut grant funding from the B.C. Lottery Corp. from $156 million to $113 million, then raised it back
to $120 million to restore funds to school district parent advisory councils. Applicants were told that arts and sports funding from lotteries would be restricted to organizations for young people
and the disabled. Premier Christy Clark promised to restore funds while campaigning for the party leadership last year. Once elected, she announced a $15 million increase in gambling funds for a range of organizations including community service clubs, fairs, festivals and museums. Chong said she sometimes meets artists and organizations who are not aware that they can apply to the B.C. Arts Council for grants. Eligibility requirements and application forms are available at www.bcartscouncil. ca. The largest recipients of arts council funding include the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra ($1.2 million last year), the Vancouver Art Gallery ($630,000) and the Vancouver International Film Festival ($82,000). Chong said more than 1,000 grants are given out to 200 B.C. communities, including $1.1 million to writers, publishers and literary festivals, as well as scholarships for new writers.

School District 69 (QUALICUM) STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE The Qualicum School District does not insure expenses for student injuries that occur on school grounds or during school activities. Those expenses are the responsibility of the parent/guardian unless the School Board is proven liable for an injury. Therefore, the Board of Education encourages all parents to obtain student accident insurance, either through their own insurance agent or through a private insurance plan. The Board of Education provides the opportunity for families to voluntarily purchase private accident insurance through the IAP Kids PlusTM plan underwritten by Industrial-Alliance Pacific Life Insurance. During the first week of school, all students will receive a brochure containing information about the voluntary insurance plan and extra copies will be available at each school. Those who attended the second annual Road Trauma Awareness fundraiser at the Rocking Horse Pub in Nanoose Bay Saturday, August 25 were treated to some fantastic music as they helped out a good cause. Keith Cyr, who organized the event to raise awareness and help prevent the carnage that continues to happen due to car crashes, had several volunteers who helped sell 50-50 tickets and put together an amazing silent auction. The event raised $2,500 which will be used to promote road sense and awareness of the epidemic of automobile crash fatalities. Cyr, who has also put together a collection of photos of roadside memorials in a book in honour of those who have died in car crashes in British Columbia, said the day of the fundraiser was also a busy one for automobile accidents in Oceanside. “It is ironic how many car crashes there were that afternoon in Parksville. I got stuck in a huge trafďŹ c jam on Saturday,â€? he said and added it was another reminder of why he is trying to get the message out about road safety. His book titled I M ‌ A Book To Remember includes pictures of memorial crosses representing crash victims that dot our roadways, photos and names of people memorialized, statistics of how many people die in car crashes, as well ways to be safer on the road and prevent the havoc that ensues after a car crash. Cyr is working on turning the Road Trauma Awareness Group into a society and he admitted that although the event wasn’t a sell-out, it was successful in spreading the message that terrible tragedies can be prevented. “This was more of a community event to get it off the

ground. All crashes are equally horriďŹ c and especially when someone young is involved it rips at your heart. There is no cure once you have the trauma ‌ but there is a cure to prevent it.â€? The highlight of the night was the top notch entertainment which included award winning recording artist Andrea Smith. The talented singer, songwriter and guitar player who calls Nanaimo home demonstrated why she is such a musical force. She performed original and cover tunes that ranged from blues to rock with her sultry voice that can only be described as captivating. Back in April, Smith took home Female Songwriter of the Year at the Island Music Awards. The talented team of Pat Coleman and Rick Salt took home Producer and Engineer of the Year for Smith’s album Sweet Embrace. Smith is gaining international interest and recognition not only for her songwriting but for the skillful rendering
of her material when she performs live. During the ďŹ rst set she performed songs from her about to be released new CD Transition with guitarist Alan Medcalf. In the second set she played songs from her CD Sweet Embrace as well as covers with a throw together band made up of some local talent that included Keith Cyr on drums, Mike Vaira on guitar and Mike Jarvis on bass. Smith said she was more than happy to take to the stage for such a worthy cause. She is currently putting the ďŹ nishing touches on her new CD and hopes to release it in a couple of months. “I am just tweaking the vocals and the ďŹ nal mix,â€? she stated. She added that since some of her former band mates have moved in different directions, she has been working with different musicians and for her new CD she had some of the best join her in the studio including Pat Steward on drums, Rick Salt on guitar and Todd Sacerty on bass.

Refinery idea a hard sell
T
here doesn’t appear to be a grey area for those who are weighing in on the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline. Opposition is rampant and loud, focusing primarily on environmental concerns, while supporters defend Enbridge’s project for, among other reasons, its economic potential. Last week’s announcement from David Black, the owner of this newspaper, for a proposed $13-billion oil refinery in Kitimat, adds a new conversation to this divisive issue. Analogous to milling raw logs instead of shipping them overseas, Black wants to add value to crude oil in B.C. A massive refinery, where half a million barrels of crude oil could be processed each day, delivers the idea of permanent employment and economic benefit for the province, instead of pumping oil sands crude into tankers bound for China. Building and running the facility would create thousands of jobs, and the area around Terrace and Kitimat would require major infrastructure improvements to accommodate the regional boom. It would also ease some, certainly not all, environmental concerns about oil tankers on the coast. As opposed to heavy crude oil, refined fuels evaporate. But Black is putting the cart before the horse. Even if he arranges $13 billion in financing and receives environmental permits, any refinery is predicated on the Enbridge pipeline, which remains deeply unpopular with a majority of the public and northern First Nations people. Significant economic benefit derived from the pipeline could sway popular opinion, especially people living through hard times in northern B.C., but probably not enough to tip the scales. Black and Enbridge will have a tough time convincing residents in southern cities that the potential of thousands of jobs in the northern oil sector is worth the risk of a pipeline leak or a tanker running aground on B.C.’s coast.

Letters THANKS FOR THE HELP Parksville, Qualicum Beach did it again, supporting the needy through their Food Drives on behalf of the Salvation Army Food Bank. The Salvation Army in Oceanside is very appreciative for the different food drives during July and August. The Canada Post offices in Parksville and Qualicum Beach received 7,184 lbs of valuable food items. This exceeds the previous food drive in 2011 by 462 lbs. Thankfully, the Canadian PUPS Mini Storage on Herring Gull Way in Parksville donated one of their storage containers to help make the job much easier. Another drive took place on July 28 at the Pheasant Glen Golf Club which raised $2,214 in cash plus $150 in gift cards. There was a birthday party which raised 390 lbs. of food and another garden party raising 394 lbs. of food plus $35 in cash. The Church of Latter Day Saints in Qualicum will stage their second Annual Food Drive on Saturday, September 15. Thanks to this generous help we are able to help many in need. Thanks to the generosity of the people in District 69, we are able to cope with the increased demand. ROLF D. GUENTHER, MAJOR Community Services Director

a vital entity in our community hurting like this. It is really surprising to me to see the lack of support from the business community. The MAC and any other community arts society in B.C. are a backbone of our need for human togetherness. I find it hard to understand how our businesses and/or our Parksville chamber can not see that a living and active art centre like the MAC contributes greatly to their collective bottom lines. There are so many things that could be done such as donating funds to keep it afloat or helping with the physical building. It would be great to have a group of local businesses get together and rebuild the once beautiful entrance steps at the front of the building off Morrison Street. The list of needs for the MAC and the opportunities for our local businesses and service organizations is somewhat endless. We must not let our very large central art community down at this time. BUILD FIRE HALL NOW Thank you, fire Chief Darryl Koshe for an excellent presentation on the construction and relocation of the long overdue new fire hall. Back in the day, the engineering department had the foresight to build the water reservoir to the highest earthquake standards and dual use as a foundation for the
conceptualized new fire hall. Then in 1997 [the town council] established a new fire hall fund with the vision of moving forward in the early 2000s. What happened? [the town council] puts the project on the back burner and spends the money on lower priorities. Town staff orders a structural report on the existing fire hall, carried out by Harold Engineering. The report warns the building may not withstand even a mild earthquake. [Town council] then decides it would be prudent to spend nearly one million dollars constructing an addition. According to current mayor Teunis Westbroek, it will be another five years before the hall is built. The town of Qualicum Beach has the ability to fund a new fire hall. I call on today’s council to make safety its number one priority and move forward on the design and build a new state of the art fire hall. BRIAN JENKINS Qualicum Beach
WHO’S THE BOSS? Why are B.C. taxpayers via government always held up for ransom, from government employees. In B.C., we have a BC Liberal government, offering the BCGEU, a wage increase over a two year contract. Not good enough for the BCGEU. It’s about time that B.C. taxpayers show government employees who is the boss. JOE SAWCHUK Duncan

Live free or D’OH! Show me a man with a tattoo and I’ll show you a man with an interesting past. — Jack London
W
BASIC
BLACK
By Arthur Black
ell, that may have been true in your day, Jack — you were swashbuckling your way around the world a century ago when the only tattooed humans you were likely to encounter were pirates, felons or circus freaks. Nowadays, everybody has tattoos. You see them on file clerks and bank managers, doctors and dental hygienists, soldiers and solicitors. The guy who stacks lettuce in my local supermarket has multi-coloured swirls of ink that start at his wrists, undulate up his arms, disappear into his short sleeved shirt and end up God knows where. Back in Jack London’s day a tattoo was a sign of rebellion. Today, sporting a tattoo is about as rebellious as wearing an Arnold Palmer golf shirt. I don’t go as far back as Jack London, but I did get myself tattooed back in the ‘60s. My rebel credentials were pretty decent: I was a Canadian kid, working on an oil tanker that was drydocked in New York. Simpler times. My tattoo was administered by an ancient guy with an equally ancient tattoo gun that hung down from the ceiling — it actually sparked as he worked. When it was over he slapped some rubbing alcohol on my bleeding arm, asked for five bucks and gave me the rest of the bottle to take with me. (“Don’t drink it, kid — it’ll blind ya”.) I didn’t know it at the time, but I was responding to a primeval human initiative. We’ve pretty much always re-decorated the temples of our bodies. Remember Otzi the Iceman — the mummified corpse spat out by a melting alpine glacier about 20 years ago? He had tattoos on his back, behind the right knee and around both ankles. Experts reckon that Otzi froze to death while hiking through the mountains more than five thousand years ago.
Otzi’s tats were simple things — x’s, dots, squiggly lines. To tell the truth, mine isn’t much more complicated. It’s a stylized anchor with a ribbon entwined around it, maybe three inches long top to bottom. Pretty tame stuff compared to the psychedelic landscapes and Technicolor panoramas kids are adorning themselves with these days. But when things get more complex they also become more error
prone. There are no spelling mistakes in my tattoo because there are no words. Not like Marie Huckle of Nova Scotia who had the words “SEE YOU AT THE CROSSROADS” tattooed on her side. She thought. What she actually got was one letter shy. Marie’s tattoo reads SEE YOU AT THE COSSROADS. Loses a certain something, don’t you think? Marie thought so too. She sued and was awarded a $9,000 settlement. This may provide some hope to the California woman who had BEAUTIFUL TRADGEDY emblazoned on her chest. Or the guy who paid to have a slogan in letters six inches high across his back telling the world I’M AWSOME. Or the Chicago dude who wanted to salute his origins with a tattoo reading CHI-TOWN across his throat. Alas, he drew a tattooist who was something less than a spelling genius. His tattoo reads: CHI-TONW. The odd thing is, that last tattoo is so bad it’s become a tattoo trend. People in the Windy City are actually paying to have the misspelled tattoo inked on their bodies. Maybe that’s what you have to do to pass for a rebel now that tattoos have become as common as freckles. Or you could be a real outlaw like Michael J. Fox. When Esquire magazine asked him to describe his tattoos, the Canadian actor said: “My tattoo is that I don’t have a tattoo.” Outrageous!

Balkan brass band to play Errington LISSA ALEXANDER

Giant hamster balls are back this year at the 2012 Lighthouse Country Fall Fair on Saturday, September 1.
EVENTS
Labour Day weekend at the fair
The Errington Hall won’t know what hit it this weekend, when two Balkan brass gypsy bands flood it with their high-energy, funkfilled, celebratory music. Vancouver-based Orkestar Slivovica is made up of 14 people who play a pile of brass instruments like saxophone, trumpet, horn and sousaphone, along with an accordion and various percussion instruments. The music is “like a stew of Klezmer, New Orleans brass, Mariachi and Turkish music, all with Roma-style ornamentation,” said alto sax player Oliver Schneider, and it is traditionally played at weddings and parties, as well as funerals. Schneider said they always have a good reaction to their music, especially from people who are from the southeastern area of Europe where the music originates. “Anyone from that part of the world, they will either freeze up, burst into tears, throw money at us, break into laughter…it’s always an extreme reaction, but it’s always good.” See ONLY A HANDFUL, page A25
42nd annual Lighthouse Country Fall Fair takes place Saturday in Qualicum Bay LISSA ALEXANDER
reporter@pqbnews.com
Lighthouse country will be filled with pets, bubbles, giant hamster balls, bouncy buildings, and music this Saturday, among a slew of handmade items as the 42nd annual Lighthouse Fair approaches. Children enter free and will see no end to the fun with a petting zoo, pet and bike parade, pony rides and old fashion games like potato sack and egg-on-spoon races. There will be a chalk wall for kids to get artsy, a bubble pond, daisy the cow, hamster ball races, and kids can even play some music with local musician Gerry Barnum. “He’s got a whole bag of tricks where he’s teaching kids how to play music on-site, it’s a great thing he’s doing there,” said president of the BowHorne-Bay Community Club, Sheena McCorquodale.
Sheena McCorquodale, president of the Bow-Horne-Bay Community Club, said this year’s fall fair will be fun-filled.
For parents there’s the Old English Car Club, an open-air market, information booths and returning to the fair after a long break, the nail driving competition. The focus of the fair this year is on water, which McCorquodale said is our most precious resource, and luckily is excellent in Lighthouse Country. “We’re flaunting Bow-Horne-Bay water because it’s excellent, it’s non-
chlorinated and it tastes wonderful.” There will be live entertainment throughout the day with Gerry Barnum, an African drumming group, a ukulele group, an excellent young fiddler, an up-and-coming vocalist, and “local legend” Peter Mason, McCorquodale said. There will be $7,000 worth of silent auction items, 50-50 tickets and other draws. And then there’s the backbone of the fair, the Fall Fair entries. McCorquodale encourages anyone who makes anything, even if they are not a resident of Lighthouse Country, to come and submit it in the fair Friday, Aug. 31 from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Look online for an exhibit guide. The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1. Adults pay $5 for entry. For more information call 250-7579991 or visit www.communityclub.ca.

Lighthouse Country
ith 130 businesses along Highway 19A alone, there’s plenty of choice in what businesses to visit in Lighthouse Country — and folks like Betsy Poel and Arlene Veenhof are working hard to spread the word. The Lighthouse Country Business Associaition — of which Poel is president and Veenhof is one of its board members — covers the area from Qualicum Bay to Deep Bay. Not only are there the 130 roadside businesses, but Pool adds there are dozens more being run out of the owners’ homes. Getting the word out about all of them is a big job. The LCBA was founded around 35 years ago, according to Poel. They have a seven-member board of directors and in their early existence, their main job was to produce a local phone directory. It’s a publication that they still produce each year. It’s paid for by member businesses and offers all sorts of listings — residential, commercial and emergency numbers — and it’s delivered free to the Lighthouse Country community. “Our job,” added Poel, “is to get people better able to find things, to make it a little easier.” Approximately 60 per cent of all business in the region, she continued, are home-based — from construction and
masonry firms, to art galleries, enter- Scott Fraser, MLA tainment venues, fitness and much more. With this variety, the challenge is keeping residents in the area and able to shop local for what they need. Licensed Ocean View Dining To that end, the LCBA held a small Authentic Cantonese & trade show during the Lighthouse Community Hall’s regular pancake breakfast earlier this year. Szechuan Dishes Thirty-two local business owners took advantage of the opportunity to set up a table or booth and show visitors 250-757-8288 what they have to offer. 5968 West Island Highway, Qualicum Bay The response by local business was more than they had Tues.-Fri. & Sun. 11am-8pm, expected, Poel said, and the event itself was a busy half-day Saturday 8am-8:30pm affair. Looking ahead, Poel said the LCBA will be doing what it can to get the word out about what the area has to offer the community — and the region. “We can offer business owners value,” she continued. “With networking, signage and more.” Poel herself is a member, noting she and her family have “Our goal is simple... been involved for many years. To help you reach yours! “I feel like I’m doing my part,” she said, noting people need to ask themselves, ‘what can I do to support my entire Direct Line: 250-951-4078 info@setterandassociates.com community?’” Becoming a member of the Lighthouse Country Business Association may be the first step. Orkestar Slivovica is playing at the Errington Hall this weekend, along with Lasqueti Island’s Bolting Brassicas.
Only a handful of bands play this type of music CONTINUED FROM PAGE A15
Schneider said for some reason the music hasn’t made it over here as there are only a handful of bands in the country who play this style, but it is ourishing in Europe. He ďŹ rst heard it on a student radio station in Victoria about four years ago when he was searching for a new style of music to play. He gathered a group together from
a variety of musical and ethnic backgrounds and the group was formed. The music is technically challenging, allows for improvisation and is a lot of fun to play, Schneider said. Lasqueti Island’s Bolting Brassicas Marching Band has a similar style, and Orkestar Slivovica have enjoyed playing with them many

Canadian artists at TOSH Contemporary artists Barton and Leier bring unique art to town LISSA ALEXANDER News Reporter
When celebrated Canadian artist Nixie Barton began creating her somewhat dark, antique doll installations for a show at the Old School House Arts Centre (TOSH) she was doing it more for herself, and wasn’t so sure people would get them. She was wrong. “I didn’t think that people would like them,â€? she said. “I wanted to do it; I didn’t think they’d sell, but you know what ‌ they have been, so I’m really thrilled.â€? Barton got her formal art training at the University of Victoria and Malaspina College in Nanaimo. She met her husband Grant Leier when they were both artists living in Victoria. The couple opened a gallery at their home in Yellowpoint 18 years ago, surrounded by an extensive garden, where they have been selling their prominent Canadian contemporary art work. Known for her bright and bold paintings, marked with clean lines and fresh compositions, Barton said this series has surprised people. “I know it kinda looks dark and dirty but it’s not meant to be. It’s just to bring out some emotion in a person.â€? Barton said the series started with a piece called Family Secrets, that spawned from situations in her own extended family. Things you’re not supposed to talk about and nobody is supposed to know about, but everybody does, she said. When she’ would share her family secrets with friends they would share their own family secrets as well, she

said, and she began to realize that everybody has them. Barton has been collecting the porcelain and celluloid dolls that are in the show for some time, and some are from the 1920s and ‘30s. She said she stripped and painted them, and then dressed and stamped them, giving some headdresses and other colourful attire. She put some in shadowboxes accompanied by little messages, some in glass bell jars, and others on little see-saws. Barton said people seem to be relating to the messages and the overall acceptance of the series has been really cool. Her husband Grant Leier also has work in TOSH’s current exhibition, with a series of colourful dogs that has allowed him to revisit his past. Twenty years ago he had painted dogs extensively, he said, for about ďŹ ve years, and the hasn’t painted them again until now. “It was fun; they’re a ton of fun to paint. They’re very fast and they’re all about colour;
more about colour than they are about the dogs. It was just a hoot. Leier studied at the Alberta College of Art in Calgary before attending classes in New York. Much of his inspiration for painting comes from exotic cultures, he said, and often he’ll add Asian, Indian and Japanese imagery to his traditional still life pieces of owers and fruit. Some of these ideas come from traveling with his wife and son over the last 20 years, he said. Executive director of TOSH, Corrine James said the reason the show is selling so well is because people are aware the couple are two of Canada’s top contemporary artists, and their work is very interesting. Along with Barton and Leier’s work, Megan Dulcie Dill’s enchanting mixed media paintings are also part of the current exhibition. These colourful pieces celebrate the life cycles of salmon and have each taken two years to complete. Dill studied at the Victoria College of Art, the University of Toronto and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Today, she divides her time between Salt Spring Island, Savary Island and Powell River. The show at TOSH runs to Sept 15. For more on Barton, Leier and their new extended gallery in Nanaimo, visit www. bartonandleiergallery.com. For more on Dill visit www. mdill.com. Parksville location for Marin bike company STEVEN HEYWOOD editor@pqbnews.com
Did you know that there’s a major bicycle manufacturer with a base in Parksville? It’s something that Brad Donaldson of Marin Bikes California (Canada) wants locals to know. For nearly two years, Marin Bikes Canada (the Canadian branch of the California-based company) has operated a warehouse in Parksville’s industrial park. It’s where all dealer warranty work is done on Marin bikes from across Canada. They see only around ďŹ ve to 10 bikes per month — and most of those, said Donaldson, are older models. Donaldson is Canadian customer service rep. for Marin, working for manager Lisa Jaggard, and alongside four other employees. The main company itself is 25 years old and was recently bought out by an Indonesian businessman — who has only made the company more progressive since taking over. For Donaldson and the

events (like the recent Bike For Your Life event), working to get
the word out about the Marin line of bikes.
For Donaldson, having a major brand based in Parksville means a better lifestyle for its employees who love the Island. “I’ve been working in (the industry) for 10 or 12 years,â€? he said, “and I love it here. It’s really neat to tell people the company has a warehouse in town.â€? While they don’t handle direct sales, they do through a local dealer — Island Cycle — as well as others on the Island and mainland. Marin itself has won awards for its suspension system and maintains a high-quality bike. It’s the company that makes working for Marin great, said Donaldson. “It’s a great family. Every day I wake up and pinch myself. It’s an awesome company.â€? Today, Donaldson ďŹ nds himself a B.C. sales rep., traveling for the company, working with their riders and helping raise the company’s proďŹ le. LAWN BOWLING
CRICKET
Parksville vs Qualicum Beach today STEVEN HEYWOOD editor@pqbnews.com
Lawn bowling teams from Qualicum Beach and Parksville hit the greens on Tues., Aug. 28 (today) for their annual challenge match. The Parksville-Qualicum Challenge starts in the City of Parksville at the local lawn blowing club on E. Stanford Ave., across from the elementary school. Mike Ward, a member of the Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club, says there are eight teams of four players in total from both community clubs — that’s around 32 players — taking part in the all-day event. Games to see which club is the best in District 69, start at 10 a.m. in Parksville and run until after 12 noon. The series of matches then moves to Qualicum Beach and their club (on Jones Street, near the Ravensong Aquatic Centre) for games that begin in the afternoon (once they’re done in Parksville). The clubs encourage people to come out and watch — and see which community lawn bowling club will take this year’s honours and local bragging rights.

gan Lake, and the Victoria-based women’s team, which features a few members of the Canadian national squad. Batting first, ACC’s scoring was rather slow to start with. Then Jay Kumar of Nanaimo and Philip Jenkinson of Parksville came in and the runs came more freely. Both batsmen hit the boundaries, including
three sixes for Kumar and four for Jenkinson. The team’s total was 156 for the loss of six wickets, largely thanks to Kumar, who made 55 and Jenkinson, who had made 54 not out when the 35 overs were up. The match limited each side to 35 overs to ensure a day-long game. See MAIDENS QUICK, page A36

CURLING
Four Foot camp draws curlers here 31st annual summer curling camp caters to visiting adults and youth curlers STEVEN HEYWOOD editor@pqbnews.com

The Wicket Maidens’ Jo White, a Canadian international, bowls to Arrowsmtih Cricket Club Saturday.
Maidens quick between the wickets CONTINUED FROM PAGE A35
Jo White, a Canadian international, was the pick of the ladies’ bowlers with figures of two for 19 off seven overs. When the Wicket Maidens batted, the first three bowlers Arrowsmith used proved very hard to score runs off, though the ladies were very quick running between the wickets and punished every fielding error by scrambling home for a single. Having been tied down by the accurate bowling of Kumar, Jenkinson and Geoff Lyons, the Maidens had to try and hit out against more wayward bowlers, who ended up taking wickets as a number of catches were very well taken. Will Jones of Qualicum Beach, the youngest member of the Arrowsmith team, came on and bowled five overs of left arm medium pace for only five runs and claimed a wicket as he removed the middle stump of one of the Maidens. The ladies finished with 100 for eight, leaving Arrowsmith the winners by 56 runs. The Arrowsmtih Cricket Club practices in Qualicum Beach and draws players from throughout the mid-Island. They play many of their exhibition games at Shawnigan Lake. — Thanks to ACC’s Luke Downs for the game information and proper cricket lingo.
More than 60 adult curlers and approximately 50 youth were in Parksville last week for the 31st annual Four Foot Curling Camp. Run by Elaine Dagg-Jackson, the camps have been running on Vancouver Island for more than three decades — the last five years at the Parksville Curling Club. Campers come to Parksville to hone their curling skills with local and international coaches. And they do come from far away. Dagg-Jackson said she had people from Manitoba, Alberta, B.C., Oregon, Ontario and Pennsylvania. “Few locals,” she added, noting that the people who do come to the camp stay in local hotels and have a good economic impact on the community for the week or so they are in the area. “We love it here,” she said of the Parksville Curling Club facility and ice. The camp culminated Sunday with the youth group, and the camp’s traditional Silver Broom competition. Featuring opening and closing ceremonies, the Silver Broom event was a skills competition. Winners were awarded bronze, silver and gold medals, sportsmanship honours were handed out, as were prizes — as well as the coveted silver broom.

Park goes to the dogs PARKSVILLE — The Vancouver Island Jack Russell Terrier Club hosted a regular lure course fun day for all breeds, as well as a go-to-ground training for small dogs. The event was held Sunday in Parksville’s Community Park, and saw a variety of dog breeds — and their owners — take part. Between barks and begs, the dogs seemed to enjoy putting their chase and hunt skills to good use. For more information about the club and its events, visit www.vijrtc.com. — Steven Heywood
