Joints ache far more quick if I didn’t exercise. I treat than they used to and some it like brushing my teeth. It’s days it can be a real struggle to something I have to do, and I get moving. do it whether I want to or not.” Taking up a fitness regimen in For someone who’s been those golden years can seem active their entire life, as daunting. Enzenhofer has been, staying And yet it is essential. active isn’t a problem. It isn’t easy some days.
“It doesn’t matter what your age is, you should be into fitness, but it gets more important for seniors,” said Herman Enzenhofer, an energetic 63-year-old who takes and teaches spin-classes at the Hocking YMCA. “Fitness helps you maintain your ability to do the things you want to do. You may not live longer by doing it,
to come back, because fitness isn’t a short-term thing. It’s long haul and you’ve got to convince them to stick with it.”
Enzenhofer said. “But if you can find a way to get them over that, sometimes a star is born. The trick is to get them there the first time, and then create an atmosphere where they want

For someone who hasn’t been active, taking that first step is the biggest issue. “Going to a fitness club, or the YMCA, can be a hurdle because they can feel like they’re out of their element, and they see people there who are doing far more than they feel they’re capable of doing,”

Healthy heart is an active heart Heart from p5 Fitness regimens should be fun and realistic. Asking a senior with bad knees and hips to run 10 kilometres a day is likely a bad idea. Having them hop on a bike or hop into a pool is a wiser alternative. “I’m into the spin classes, but you’ve also got walking classes, and yoga is really taking off right now,” Enzenhofer offered. “Anything that elevates your heart rate, right? You want to get into that aerobic heart rate three or four times a week, and there’s lots of machines (treadmills, recumbent bikes, cross-trainers) and approaches that can help with that.” Enzenhofer even suggests weight-lifting as a viable option.
“Even at an older age, you can still strengthen muscle groups through weight-lifting,” he said. “That will shed pounds, and that’s what you need. You need to keep a svelter body. Things like tennis and racquetball can be beneficial too, but they can also be very hard on the joints because of the starting and stopping.” Enzenhofer has been around long enough to see tons of people overcome their initial misgivings, take up fitness and thrive. He believes anyone, at any age, can do it with the right mix of determination and perseverance. “I like thinking I’m creating these monsters who enjoy fitness,” he laughed. “It’s rewarding for me and I know it’s rewarding for them. They’re getting so many benefits from it, and it’s good to play a part in that.”

Simple tips for active seniors • Make a date: One of the best ways to ensure you keep with your program, at any age, is to exercise with a buddy. Make a date with a friend three times a week to head out for a brisk walk, 30 to 45 minutes is ideal.
Take a look at Gretzky’s health and fitness tips for seniors:
• Incorporate household and outdoor chores: Gardening and chores around the house can get your heart pumping. Pulling weeds, mowing the lawn and vacuuming get you moving.
• Talk to your doctor: No matter what your age is, you should always consult your

the mall—or leave the car at home all together. Doro, a company that makes cell phones specifically for seniors, suggests always bringing your cell phone with you when you go for a walk—especially if you are by yourself.
• Don’t forget the strength training: To keep your bones and joints healthy and strong, don’t forget to incorporate some strength training into your exercise routine. You can use free weights or elastic resistance bands and perform the moves right in your own living room.
• Hop in the pool: Swimming is a great, low-impact way to stay active. Many community centres such as the YMCA offer water aerobics classes on a daily basis. If arthritis is a problem that stops you from enjoying certain exercises, a pool is a great alternative.
• Make it fun: This is the most important thing to remember. We all know exercising can be a chore sometimes, but if you do something you enjoy, you are more likely to stick with it.
• Put on your dancing shoes: Aerobic dance classes are a fun way to stay active and are great exercise—as long as you don’t get too fancy and

Smart choices make all the difference Making healthier food choices as we get older may be more important than ever. Eating well is closely linked to aging well it turns out. By instituting a few changes where it counts, elders can maintain and even improve their health, according to research from the 1999 British Columbia Nutrition Survey. “The key is choosing foods from all the food groups, including fruit and vegetables, grains, dairy and protein,” says Sharon Fast, a registered dietician based in Chilliwack. Our ideas about nutrition have changed so much through the decades. Having a taste for white
bread, for example, made with highly refined flour, is a habit that some older folks may find hard to break.
A decrease in lean muscle mass is inevitable when we get older, which slows down the metabolism.
“Growing up, white sliced bread was seen as more desirable. But today it comes down to making healthier choices,” says Fast.
“That creates challenges for seniors because they need to eat a more nutrient dense diet,” says Fast.
“Say you’re making a sandwich, I advise my clients to try using half white bread and half brown bread or whole grain.” These healthier eating habits can be brought in gradually. “When you’re making pasta, mix in the whole grain variety. It can be an acquired taste, but you might fight you start to enjoy it.”
Opting for lower fat dairy products and leaner proteins is the way to go, along with introducing more whole grain products. “Also when we talk about taste perceptions when we age, sometimes food doesn’t taste as good as it used to,” says Fast. The instinct is to reach for the salt shaker. Improvements can be made

saturated and trans fats, and especially salt, which is listed as ‘sodium’ on food labels. Older individuals experience problems of over nutrition such as obesity and under nutrition such as micronutrient deficiencies, according to B.C. officials. Many could benefit from specialized diets to counterbalance agerelated physiological changes, according to results of the nutrition survey. There are B6 or B12 deficiencies, and often there’s a need to boost calcium and Vitamin D intakes. Recent studies seem to show that calcium from food sources may be preferable to the supplement form.
Changes in appetite can result from some medications, or from loneliness and depression. Better meal planning is an important step.
“The fact that not many seniors seem to like to drink milk seems to add to the problem,” says the dietician.

adventure Call of the open road For John Blessin, traveling is a reprieve from the mundane of every day life. The 68-year-old and his wife regularly plan road trips through the United States, most often to the national parks in Utah. It keeps them active, educated, and always wanting more. “Every time we go, we can’t wait to go back,” said Blessin, who loves to explore the canyons, hike the trails, and take in the picturesque beauty all around him. “You’re always learning and discovering new stuff.” Traveling is like a time capsule for seniors. it keep the brain and body active, it also has the ability to broaden social circles, something that often diminishes as people grow older, but is extremely important in keeping them lively.
“For lack of a better expression, it can help [seniors] remain intact for longer,” said Darren Blakeborough, media studies professor at the University of the Fraser Valley who has a masters in gerontology.
Research shows that strong social ties can lead to fewer colds, lower blood pressure, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, some cancers and even Alzheimer’s.
“We’ve had a tendency in our culture to view old people as this one homogenous group with the same desires, the same increased need for healthcare, the same need to be put in a home. But with the baby

Gone are the days where seniors had limited travel options, they’re now being inundated with senior-specific expeditions that include road trips, educational getaways, cruises, volunteer trips, and more. “They’re getting to rewrite the rules for the travel industry,” said Blakeborough. “They’re getting what they want tailored specifically to them.”

adventure A few travel tips... Whether retired or simply an empty nester, older men and women often love their increased opportunities to travel and see the world. Without kids to cater to or college tuition to pay, men and women approaching retirement age, or those who have already passed it by, find themselves with more free time to take to the highways and skyways and experience other cultures. While traveling is a great way to make the most of one’s golden years, traveling as an older adult isn’t the same as it might have been back when you were a carefree teenager or twenty-something backpacking through Europe. Before setting out to see the world, older travelers should consider a host of factors. Documentation Older travelers tend to travel abroad more than they do domestically, so be sure all documentation, including passports for each traveler, is up-to-date. If you’re traveling for an especially long period of time, be sure your passport is valid beyond the length of the trip. In addition to passports and any visas you might need, make sure your driver’s licenses and auto insurance policies are current and will remain so through the trip. This is important for travelers who plan on Continued: Advice/ p19

adventure Advice for older travellers Advice from p13 renting a car during their vacation. Don’t forget to bring your driver’s license and proof of auto insurance (as well as contact information for your insurance company should an accident occur) on your trip. Climate & Geography It’s also important to consider geographical conditions before establishing any travel plans. Older men and women tend to have more health issues and might even be on prescriptions that can make it challenging to travel to certain areas. Before committing to a trip, consult your physician about the possible effects a certain climate might have on you personally. Some people might be sensitive to altitude and therefore unable to travel to high-altitude locations without putting themselves at serious risk. When considering climate and geography, don’t overlook a region’s history or likelihood of natural disasters. If a given destination has a history of hurricanes, earthquakes or tsunamis, then consider that before making plans. It’s still possible to enjoy such destinations, but you’ll want to travel when such storms or natural disasters are not in season. Luggage & Wardrobe When traveling, it might be comforting to overpack because it can give you the feeling you’re prepared for any situation that might arise. But don’t pack so heavily that your luggage becomes a nuisance to take from place to place. If you’re traveling to especially tourist-friendly regions, keep in mind such locales often have all a traveler needs should he or she have forgotten something or experiences an emergency. When packing your clothes for a trip, keep your wardrobe as conservative as possible. Anything too flashy could draw the attention of con artists or thieves, as tourists often make for easy marks. But don’t forget to pack some formal attire as
Traveling as an older adult might require more caution and planning than it does for young jetsetters, but such measures won’t diminish the joy of your travels. well, as clothing that is too casual might make it hard for you to gain access to certain tourist destinations or restaurants. Contact Information While a vacation is an escape for many people, you don’t want to escape from the world entirely. Make sure loved ones back home have your itinerary and know where you will be staying should an emergency occur. If traveling abroad where you won’t have cell phone service, choose resorts or
hotels with Internet access and ensure friends or family members you will check in periodically via e-mail. While staying in touch might not be reminiscent of the carefree travels of your youth, doing so will help your loved ones rest easy and will prove invaluable should something unexpected occur. When traveling, older men and women should consider a host of factors before making plans and always make safety a priority.

living Big ideas for small spaces Don’t give up the green, just because you’re downsizing, says Little Mountain Greenhouse Many benefits come with downsizing your home and garden space. And the best part is being able to showcase your beautiful garden oasis right on your patio and front step. The quality of care you can give a smaller location is a huge benefit of a smaller garden space. Container gardening is the way to go, whether you`re gardening for a large or small spot. Containers bring gardening into any space and help brighten up even the darkest corners. It is well worth it to invest in a beautiful container for yourself; your flowers can change with the season and your container can last you a lifetime. With a variety of containers on the market, let your unique personality shine through and customize your patio to complement you. Whether you are looking for inspiration to create your own container or if you want to pick one out designed by an expert, there are hundreds of unique container options for you. Another great benefit of container gardening is portability. Put your container on wheels and you can move your container from the front to the back, sun to shade, indoors to outdoors. Make sure that all outdoor containers have drainage holes in the bottom. Also, if you enjoy creating new life, container gardening makes it easier to save seeds for future

Container gardening is extremely kid-friendly, it creates a great way to encourage the next generation. It’s a fun way to get involved with your family and grandkids. Not only is it the perfect excuse to get in the dirt, it’s a hobby that will hopefully improve eating habits. Turn your patio into a beautiful garden by creating a lovely spot for tea or lunch. The health benefits of growing your own food, maintaining a garden and being outdoors far outweigh most indoor activities. And the best part of downsizing: hopefully your weeding and lawn care will be minimized.
Trending now Vertical living walls are stylish, trendy and great for small spaces. A living wall planter allows you to garden anywhere there is a wall. The Woolly Pocket is an innovative addition to vertical gardening. It is perfect for any small space, indoors or out. Just like hanging artwork on your wall, Woolly Pockets come with the hardware you need to hang them. Herbs and tropicals do very well in a Woolly Pocket. Whether you’re creating an indoor kitchen herb garden or an outdoor edible container, be sure to check out Woolly Pockets. Watering is simple. The system wicks the water
down to the roots, helping to conserve water and promote healthy plants. The breathable felt allows moisture to evaporate and plants to air prune, meaning roots will continue to grow within the container in a constricted pattern – something that can only be accomplished if they are exposed to air. As a result, your plant will constantly produce new and healthy branching roots. Whichever style of patio gardening you choose, always remember the most important thing: Stop and smell the flowers. security Don’t be a victim of this classic scam Scam artists continue to target British Columbian seniors through deceptive ‘sweepstakes’ opportunities that come through the mail. It’s an age-old trick and unfortunately seniors continue to be victims of this type of scheme. This is how the scam works: Martha is 82 years old and lives alone. She receives a letter in the mail saying she has won $2.5 million. All she has to do is send $30 in the mail as a ‘processing fee’ and include personal details, such as her telephone number and birth date. Martha takes some money from the bank, pops it into an envelope and sends it off. Not only is Martha out
some crucial money from her limited budget, she has also been added to a ‘sucker list’ and receives more and more offers like this one in the mail. Of course, she never sees any winnings.
n Be careful if an offering asks for you to send personal information.
Just last year, Vancouver Police broke up a lottery mailout scam that was pulling in thousands of dollars a day from seniors around the globe.
n Before responding to a company you have never heard of, contact organizations such as Consumer Protection BC, Canada’s Anti-Fraud Centre or your local Better Business Bureau to see if they have received any complaints about the company.
Here are some tips to protect you and your family from deceptive mail-outs and lottery scams:
n Do not fill out surveys or questionnaires asking questions about gambling, puzzles or sweepstakes.
n Do not pay up-front for any prize. A legitimate prize offering will never require you to pay anything.
n If you are getting rid of documents that have your personal information on them (e.g., bills and bank statements), shred them.
n Be suspicious of free gifts.
n Do not be fooled by glossy and colourful mail-outs. Scam artists are professionals and know how to make things look real. n Sit down with family members who might be vulnerable and explain how these types of scams work. n Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

security Top 10 scams
Scammers are using new guises to misrepresent themselves and separate consumers from their cash, according to the Better Business Bureau of Mainland B.C. Every year agency compiles a list of top 10 scams it is witnessing. The bureau says social media networks are increasingly being used to transmit spam and scammers are exploiting new trends, including BC Hydro’s rollout of smart meters and consumer interest in selling gold jewelry while the yellow metal is at record prices. Here’s is the BBB’s list: 1. Brand spoofing Brand spoofing (aka phishing) is a general term for e-mail, text messages and websites fabricated and sent by criminals and designed to look like they come from wellknown and trusted businesses, financial institutions and government agencies to collect personal, financial and sensitive
information. If the recipient follows the link provided and connects with the fraudulent website, any information entered into the data fields (account number, PIN etc.) could be recorded and used for fraudulent purposes. 2. Advance fee loans Consumers have reported losing substantial sums of money responding to advertisements that “guarantee” loans to people, often online. Consumers complete credit applications and are told the loan (from $5,000 to $100,000) has been approved and the promised funds will be received once a fee is paid. After payment, the loan is never received as promised. 3. Gold buying schemes The price of gold has soared recently. Similar to gold rushes of the past, a strained economy and high demand for gold resulted in many consumers selling, trading
and receiving unfair returns when cashing in their gold and jewellery. 4. Financial elder abuse Financial elder abuse occurs when seniors’ pocketbooks are exploited by scammers who take advantage of a person’s vulnerabilities associated with age – like hearing loss, loneliness, physical limitations and impaired mental capacity. Common financial elder abuse frauds include tricking seniors into giving out private banking information; encouraging unnecessary home repair work, telemarketing and mail fraud; and swindles by family or friends that result in seniors giving up money, property, personal information and decision making capacity. 5. Power saving claims The switch to smart meters in B.C. fostered a rise in false claims and deceptive ads by some scammers selling energy conservation Continued: Scams/ p24

security Top 10 scams Scams from p23 devices. 6. Door-to-door sales Each year a variety of unscrupulous door-to-door salespeople use high pressure sales tactics to frighten people into purchasing expensive, substandard – often unneeded products and services. Be wary of overly aggressive sales people selling everything from alarm systems to vacuums and air purifiers, as well as roofing, paving, window washing, painting, plumbing, heating, repair and landscaping services. 7. Virus fixing scheme A scammer claims to be
phoning from Microsoft about a serious problem with the person’s computer. The caller warns that if the problem is not solved, the computer will become unusable. In order to “fix” it, the computer owner is directed to a website and told to download a program, plus pay a fee for a subscription to this preventative service. The catch: there was never anything wrong with the computer, the caller is not working for Microsoft, and the owner has downloaded to their computer damaging malware and spyware. 8. Fraudulent locksmiths Consumers reported “local locksmiths” advertising online using a local telephone number and local address, but when

contacted, consumers are connected to a call centre in another city and there is no locksmith at the address listed in your area. Consumers who have hired these companies allege that they have been overcharged for products and services. 9. Penny auctions Online ads, often designed to look like news reports, are cropping up on popular websites claiming that you can get great deals on iPads and other electronics with online penny auctions. Most commonly with a penny auction, users must set up an account and purchase bids with a credit or debit card; each individual bid may cost less than a dollar and are often sold in
bundles of 100 or more. Every item has a countdown clock and as people bid, the cost of the item goes up incrementally and more time is added to the clock. Even if you don’t win the item, you still have to pay for the bids you placed which can add up over time. 10. Anti-social network Social networks like Facebook and Twitter are becoming more and more popular. Users are often subject to targeted advertising and direct messages. To learn more about how to protect yourself from false or misleading advertising, contact the Competition Bureau at competitionbureau.gc.ca or 1 (800) 642-3844.
planning ‘Simple will better than no will at all’ It’s never too late — or too early — to start estate planning, says Todd Harvey, a partner at the Baker Newby legal firm in Chilliwack. A will is not just something seniors should prepare in their sunset years, he said, but an “automatic” thing that anyone over age 20 should think about, especially those starting families and beginning to accumulate assets. Because accidents can happen to anyone at anytime, Harvey explained, and a will can save a family the emotional burden of how to distribute assets and avoid the financial cost of straightening out these matters in a courtroom, if no will is in
place. A simple will prepared by a notary public may cost $100$200, but a contested estate could cost “thousands” to settle in court, Harvey said. “What you should be thinking about ... is the people you’re going to place a burden on, if you don’t have your affairs in order,” he said. In addition to a will, Harvey also recommended appointing a close family member or trusted friend to handle your financial affairs through a “power of attorney” document, in case you are unable through accident or ill health to do it yourself. “Certainly
anyone

agreement” that involves health care decisions, like palliative care, if you are unable to make them. And an “advanced directive” Continued: Will/ p26

for health care — also called a living will — is a document that sets out your preferences for when to end life support in terminal situations. These four documents were once mainly recommended for seniors, Harvey said, but that changed as the number of younger people incapacitated by illness or accident mounted. “It could happen to anyone at any time,” he said. Harvey said he’s been called to court to deal with a “staggering” number of cases because no will has

been prepared. Even if you believe you have few assets and no family or close friends to leave them to, Harvey said a will can be used to assign them to charities or to any other entity you desire. Simple wills can be done by a notary public, but more complex wills — like those involving children from several marriages or special trust provisions for disabled children — should be handled by a lawyer, Harvey said. “A simple will is better than no will at all,” he said.

health One-stop access to care Chilliwack seniors with complex health issues are gaining comprehensive primary care in their community with the opening of a new Primary Care Seniors Clinic at Chilliwack General Hospital. The new clinic is a collaboration of the Chilliwack Division of Family Practice and Fraser Health’s Primary Health Care, Older Adult, Home Health, and Mental Health and Substance Use programs. The Chilliwack Primary Care Seniors Clinic improves patient care by assisting GPs and nurse practitioners with the assessment, diagnosis and management of patients who have dementia concerns or multiple chronic conditions and complex health issues. The clinic makes it easier for seniors to get focused care by providing access to a team of health care professionals, including primary care doctors, a nurse
specializing in seniors care, a geriatrician and geriatric psychiatrist. Working together, the team partners with patients, their family members and family doctors to ensure seniors are well prepared and supported in their ongoing health needs. Services include:

problems.
That’s particularly true if you are elderly, or lack the deep resources of an extended family network, she says.
“It’s the system; it’s not the people,” White says. “The people are doing the best they can.”
White is quick to point out the challenge lies with an overtaxed and complicated health care service.
That’s were Silver Strands comes in. Silver Strands is a local service White started a couple of years ago. Its goal is to guide people through various aspects of the system, easing the transition and smoothing the bumps along the way. “We are problem solvers who co-ordinate the disjointed elements of health care services,” White says. It begins by understanding the expectations of her clients and their families, then developing a personalized plan to monitor progress and offset any surprises.
Efforts have been made over the years to develop more seamless, integrated health care delivery, she says. But gaps still remain, particularly if people are accessing the system through emergency room visits or walk in clinics. White has more than 30 years experience helping people. She says she’s seen how, in the rush and crush of an over-stressed health delivery system, gaps and cracks can appear. Without care people can fall through those cracks, turning simple, preventable situations into more serious

White helps her clients prepare for medical visits and will often accompany them if asked. At a time when many physicians limit the number of issues dealt with in a particular visit, she says, it’s important questions are precise and explanations understood. Continued: Strands/ p29

Strands from p28 It’s also helpful to have someone co-ordinate future visits and appointments, and ensure issues like medications are understood and handled properly. The service White provides is not free. “There is a minimal cost,” she says (consultations are free). But for many it can mean the difference between accessing proper care, or being left behind. Canada may have excellent health care, however that means little if someone is unable to make full use of it, White argues.
