Councillor Sue Attrill

Message from the Mayor

Councillor Ken Huttema

Fall is a season of change and new beginnings. Leaves on the trees change from green to beautiful shades of orange, red and brown, the days get shorter and cooler and Chilliwack students are beginning new grades with new teachers and faces. Shorter days and your busier schedule don’t have to mean a less active lifestyle. This season of change is the perfect time to incorporate small and healthy changes into your daily activities. There are countless opportunities to do so in Chilliwack, indoors and out. The Fall 2012 Leisure Guide puts them all at your fingertips. Each contributor to this Guide brings with them an expertise that collectively addresses the needs and interests of the residents of Chilliwack and area. On behalf of Chilliwack City Council, I encourage you to take a moment to read through this guide, see what it has to offer and most importantly, take advantage of all the amazing ways you and yours can get involved and be active and healthy. Sincerely,

Parks & Trails Yarrow Pioneer Park

Over the past several years the City of Chilliwack in conjunction with the Yarrow Pioneer Park Residence Group has worked together to create a park space in Yarrow that, in one location, would providing opportunities for play, learning and leisure and would encourage family involvement. This past summer this vision and work became a reality with Yarrow Pioneer Park now being completed. The park development now incorporates; a new nature- themed playground area, including new play structures, a water feature and a manually wheeled (bike, tricycle, wagon) streetscape element which is located in the south east quadrant of the park. A new, modern and more diverse skate park was installed and the removal of the original skate park allowed for a prominent entrance way feature as well as a large information kiosk outlining the history of the park to be installed. The laying of several pathways allowed all these elements to be joined making it easy for visitors to navigate.

Waterfowl in Parks

While it is enjoyable to feed the waterfowl it is detrimental to them and our environment. and creates numerous problems such as: • Disturbs natural migration patterns, leading to a high concentration of birds • Overcrowding can lead to disease and fighting amongst the population • Feeding destroys the bird’s natural ability to forage and find food for themselves • Deprives the birds of essential nutrients • It reduces useable areas due to large amount of feces and aggressive fowl Feeding waterfowl is also illegal and can result in a fine of up to $2000 (Bylaw #2974) Please help us control the waterfowl population and remember; real geese do not eat bread.

Top Five Dog Tips for Local Parks and Trails License Your Dog A license isn’t just a fashion accessory for your beloved pooch, it helps identify your dog if it gets lost. Leash Make sure your pet is under control. Whereas you may be comfortable around your pet, others may not be. An over excited or aggressive animal can increase others discomfort or fear. Unleash The City of Chilliwack has off-leash locations for your dog to run freely . They are: South Chilliwack – The former Canadian Forces Base at Nord Road North Chilliwack – Island 22 at Cartmell Road When visiting the off-leash areas please keep toys and snacks off site and remain

The Fraser River: Its Spirit and Place

For 10,000 years the Fraser River has pierced through the centre of our Province before reaching the Fraser Valley and a slow meandering journey to the Pacific Ocean. For most of its life, the river offered food and material resources that enabled the Stó:lō, 10

(the People of the River), to thrive and expand in a series of villages located along the river. The section that flows by Chilliwack is called the gravel reach. Here the river supports 30 species of fish, and provides rich habitats for resident and migrating birds and a host of mammal species. In the last century the river began to change. Flood control measures and developments have altered the landscape and are threatening the health of the river. This exhibit looks at the history of the Fraser River and why, today, it is important to understand the processes that created the river and have sustained it for so many centuries.

Pennies for our “An-cent-ors”

The Chilliwack Museum and Archives are launching a penny drive! It’s an end of an era! In early May the last penny was minted at the Royal Canadian Mint. The federal government will stop circulating pennies as early as this fall when current inventories are depleted. We are collecting your remaining one-cent coins as a fundraiser to replace our aging microfilm reader-printer and/or our aging photocopier. Both of these machines receive heavy use by researchers and access to the Archives will be improved from technologies new digital machines can offer. So stop by to donate and support the preservation and research of Chilliwack’s history. Penny jars are set up at the museum and the archives to receive donations.
