HOT HOT HOT ? Summer has arrived - with more than what was expected ! Hot sunny days - for weeks on end - and, I have heard more than one person complaining about not being able to stay cool. Staying inside shouldn't be the choice - but staying cool is. When the need for cool arrives we wish that we had built "that deck" with a shade pergola top. We didn't - but there is a solution - and the cost is less that building a deck.

BUILD-IT YOURSELF OR PREFABRICATED Upside - permanent structure - no need to dismantle and store after the season is over. Rain? Wind? who cares ! - the elements won't cause a mad dash to protective cover. AND - if the square footage of your structure is less than 10 square meters (107.5 sq. ft) you do not need a building permit. Set back requirements are a reasonable 1.5 metres (5 feet) away from all property lines. Also the structure must not be attached to the principal residence. Height restriction is 4.5 metres (15 feet). The guidelines for a Gazebo are common sense and very easy. Make sure that your wood is kiln dried and well sanded. The removal of moisture from the wood and thorough sanding will ensure that your finish will adhere to the wood and give you many years of enjoyment. Use stainless bolts and screws that have been countersunk. This will result in an extremely sturdy and attractive structure. Build it yourself, or prefabricated there are numerous styles available for your consideration. Victorian, minimal, contemporary or Oriental. Let your imagination and preference guide you here. The addition of hanging flower baskets, benches with cushions, tables and chairs for dining El fresco, a chaise for an afternoon nap?? The options are unlimited. Downside - the cost - I checked on line and found a lovely 10 x 10 resin Gazebo - with floor, the cost was around $4500 - substantially more than a portable, but substantially less than the cost of a deck (which should be constructed by a professional). Whatever you choose, a Gazebo will expand your living space - give you, your family and friends an immediately accessible retreat to make cool summer living easy.

While some people see a bedroom as simply a place to sleep, more and more people are recognizing the “master suite” as a room unlike any others in their homes. For these people, a bedroom is a sanctuary that allows the homeowner an off-limits place to get away from the world… to slow down the pace and rejuvenate. As master suites have grown in popularity, many of today’s renovated or newly constructed homes not only have an ensuite, but also a seating area. Regardless of what your bedroom is to you, however, you likely face the same challenges, especially here in the Comox Valley where our shopping options are more limited than in a metropolitan area. If you’re tired of the limited choices in patterns, colors, and even products at area retailers, then custom may be the way to go to give your room…and yourself a lift for fall. Rather than a renovation project or the purchase of new furniture, consider window treatments and a bedding
ensemble. You may want to add an area rug for another splash of color and texture, and then look at your accessories, such as throw pillows or bolsters, which can coordinate with the windows and bedding. When going custom, there are hundreds of choices for window treatments. Do you want shades or blinds? If going with blinds, do you want fabric, wood, or plastic? Do you want vertical or horizontal? Room darkening or blackening? Choices, choices, choices. If shades are more your style, you have similar choices in materials and function (room darkening, etc.), but there are other decisions, too, which your designer can discuss with you. Remember, custom does not always cost more than retail, but the opportunity to pick exactly what you want is much greater.

Grilled Portobello Mushroom Sandwiches
PREP TIME: 25 MINUTES COOKING TIME: ABOUT 7 MINUTES MAKES: 2 TO 4 SERVINGS INGREDIENTS 1 piccolo ciabattini (see Note) 2 portobello mushrooms, each about 4" to 5" wide 4 slices havarti cheese, each cut in half (see Note) 3 Tbsp. pesto 3 Tbsp. mayonnaise 8 slices ripe tomato Balsamic vinegar and olive oil to taste salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 Tbsp. chopped fresh parsley
METHOD: Preheat an indoor grill or barbecue to medium-high. Cut the bread widthwise in half. Now cut each half piece of bread lengthwise in half. Grill the bread, on the cut side, until nicely coloured, about 30 seconds. Set bread, cut side up, on a nonstick baking sheet. Trim a little from the stem end of each mushroom, and then cut each mushroom into 1/2” slices. Brush the mushroom slices lightly with olive oil. Grill 1 to 2 minutes on each side, until nicely coloured and just tender. Set mushrooms on a plate. Set and oven rack 6” below your oven’s broiler. Preheat the broiler to high. Spread each piece of bread with pesto and mayonnaise. Top each piece of bread with 2 halves of havarti cheese. Divide and top the cheese with the tomato and mushrooms. Broil the sandwiches 2 to 3 minutes, or until the cheese just begins to melt. Set the sandwiches on plates. Drizzle with a little balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and parsley and serve. This recipe will serve two if enjoyed on its own. It will serve four and make a light meal if served with a side salad.

Note: Piccolo ciabattini is Italian-style bread about half the size of a baguette. It is available in our bakery section. Sliced havarti cheese is available in our deli department.

… everyday to gourmet ... Lavender is not just another pretty flower - people around the world have used lavender as an herb for over 2,500 years. Perhaps best known as part of the French seasoning mixture ‘Herbes de Provence,’ lavender also lends its distinctive sweet flavour to vinegars, sauces, honey, jams and jellies. Lavender flowers add a delicate floral touch to salad dressings, poached fish and herbal teas. Infuse lavender flowers in a base for homemade ice cream (strain before freezing). Add a mysterious scent to custards, flans or sorbets. Introduce an aromatic flavour by placing a pinch of dried lavender buds in sugar (let it sit about one week for flavour to infuse) and then sift into desserts, muffins and buns. Lavender is an incredibly versatile herb for cooking. A small addition breathes life into savory dishes ranging from hearty stews, roasts and gratins to wine-reduced sauces, and lamb and chicken recipes. Look for small, dried flowers with a vivid violet hue and flowery fragrance. Make sure to use only culinary lavender for your cooking. Remember: less is more when using lavender. Start with a small amount of the dried flower and add as you go.

THE COMOX VALLEY RECORD
THE SUN’S HARMFUL UV RAYS Gone are the days when we basked in the sun USING OILS AND BUTTERS to achieve the darkest tan possible….. We are learning more and more about the health hazards associated with too much sun exposure. Over exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays can result in pre-mature aging, skin cancer, wrinkles, severe burns, age spots, and the proliferation of moles which can be an indicator of developing cancer in the future. Research has also shown that excessive exposure to UV radiation may impede the body's immune system. Continuous exposure to the sun’s rays will increase skin damage, whether or not one gets a sun burn, so applying sunscreen daily when you are outside, even in the winter months, is very important. For proper protection use a separate moisturizer with a sunscreen over top. Now if you are still yearning for that luscious tan, try using a sunless tanning product. Sunless tanners such as Quick Tan Instant Bronzing Mousse have improved tremendously delivering natural looking colour with no orange. It is tinted for an immediate sun
kissed glow so you can actually see where you have applied and prevent streaking. Great for filling in tan lines too! A sunless tan generally develops in 3-5 hours and most products can be used daily for a deep, dark tan and then 1-2 times per week to maintain. The most common active ingredient in sunless tanners is DIHYDROXYACETONE. DHA works by reacting with the keratin protein in the outer or "dead" layer of your skin. DHA in sunless tanners is refined from sugar beets or sugar cane. Discovered to be a temporary skin coloring agent back in the 1920’s, the Food and Drug Administration added DHA to their list of approved cosmetic ingredients in the 1970’s. DHA based sunless tanning has been recommended by the Skin Cancer Organization, American Academy of Dermatology, Canadian Dermatology Association, The American Cancer Society and the American Medical Association. For a year round natural looking, safe tan, stop by today and pick up your sunless tanner!

when the warm weather arrives H How long do you hold on to your bra bras? Well, if you happened to live in an Aus Austrian castle, you might find one dating bac back 600 years. Th The amazing discovery of bras from the 15th century shocked fashion experts as the bra was believed to be only a little ove over 100 years old. The bra was said to hav have been invented after the corset when one New York Socialite, Mary Phelps Jac Jacob, was unhappy with how her sheer gow gown looked over her stiff corset. H However, this new find proves diff differently.
MODERN HISTORY OF THE BRA From the 16th century to the 19th century corsets dominated the undergarments of wealthy women. Corsets were designed to restrain the lower torso while pushing the breasts upward. It wasn’t until the late 19th century that fashion makers started experimenting with two-piece undergarments. One piece would hold the breasts, suspended by the shoulders, while the other would cover the torso. The first brassiere went into mass-market production in 1912 and was patented in 1913 by Sigmund Lindauer from Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt, Germany. The true death of the corset wouldn’t come until World War II, however, when metal shortages encouraged women to abandon the metal-laden garment for the new brassiere. By the time the war ended, most fashion conscious women in North American and in Europe were wearing brassieres. Initially, woman had to suffer with stretchable cups to accommodate different breast sizes but in 1932 cup sizes A through D were introduced and adjustable bands were also first seen in the 1930s.
Achieving predictable haircolor results can be a challenge for some clients due to many factors – the consultation, colorist’s understanding of the product, colorist’s skill level and technique. Redken is making it easier for clients to get the color they want by certifying their top colorist and calling them Redken Certified Haircolorists. Highlighting these highly trained colorists, dedicated to their craft and invested in becoming the best, will make it easier for clients to connect with credible
colorists. Ashley Birley at Chatters Salon has just passed the certification exam (written, practical and scenario) to become a Redken Certified Haircolorst. With a comprehensive understanding of haircolor principles, creative color, foil placement, color correction and the consultation process, Her clients are guaranteed to receive exceptional service and color results. “Color Certification was designed to recognize and reward top colorists. Our
accreditation process assesses their technical skills, knowledge of haircolor products and principles and their approach to color formulation, application and color correction. An individual that becomes certified will excel in the area of haircolor and provide top notch service to their clients,” explains Christine Schuster, senior vice president of education for Redken.

BRAS – WE’VE COME A LONG WAY BABY This, of course, is a little different from the bra’s 600-year-old sibling. These ancient bras were found to have slightly different designs but were made of linen and included a row of six eyelets for fastening. Of note, however, was that the unearthed bras shared a similar design with shoulder straps and a likely back strap along with lacy ornamentation. It seems that even back on the 1400s, bras were considered a thing of beauty. The bra now represents a multi-billion dollar industry and enjoys an illustrious place in fashion and in the function of everyday dressing. It also enjoys a special place in our hearts as we don it not only to enhance our silhouette, but also to know we did something luxurious for ourselves each day too.
