Help on the way Discussions ongoing for partners to help the troubled Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com

After a presentation from Karen Hunter, Parksville city council asked staff to look into how the city might be able to help the struggling Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Reserve (MABR). “We’ve begun discussions with UNESCO (United Nations Educational, ScientiďŹ c and Cultural Organization), the university (VIU) and other partners,â€? mayor Chris Burger updated THE NEWS on Thursday. he day may have set some records, says Rob MacKay, a spokesperson for Quality Foods. The local grocery store company hosted their 2012 Kids Sand Castle Building Competition, coinciding with the annual KidFest in Parksville Community Park on Sunday. Quality Foods is celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, and they were giving out plenty of prizes to the kids for their sandcastle efforts on the beach. The prize giveaway event at 1:30 p.m. was well-attended and garnered plenty of cheers for the winners in various age categories. Overcast skies and the threat of rain didn’t keep people away. In fact, there appeared to be more people than ever at the park. MacKay noted quickly that he thought there might have been more entries in QF’s sand castle event than ever. The weather stayed warm, the rain held off, and families enjoyed the day. There were games, prizes, food and fun for the whole family at the Parksville KidFest Sunday.

RDN seeking info. on groundwater NANAIMO — Residents who get their water from a well on their property are informational gold to the Regional District of Nanaimo. As part of the Drinking Water and Watershed Protection Program, the RDN is asking residents for their help in understanding local groundwater systems. To this end, staff will be visiting select areas between August 21 and September 5 and asking residents for permission to measure the level of water in their wells and

conduct a test for electrical conductivity. Information about groundwater levels helps scientists understand where the water table is located, where groundwater may connect with streams, and how current water levels compare to historical levels. It is important to learn more about groundwater because it is a source of drinking water for many rural residents. Groundwater also helps maintain stream and ďŹ sh health by contrib-

uting cool, clean water to rivers year-round and especially during summer months when there is little or no rain. The research is part of the Water Budget Project. The goal is to better understand regional water resources by identifying where various elements of the hydrologic cycle are located (ie., soils, aquifers, streams, lakes), how much water they hold, how water moves between these elements, and where water is being taken or used

Future of the biosphere reserve is bright: Hunter CONTINUED FROM PAGE A1

a first in Canada. Hunter said “the past is the past and the future is bright,” stressing that they have a lot to offer in terms of scientific research, sustainability initiatives and public recognition. When pressed for details, Hunter struggled to define the reserve. “It’s about model regions trying to come up with innovative solutions for sustainability,” she said pointing to some of the climate and invasive species monitoring they are involved in. “I don’t want to put a bound-

ary on what a biosphere reserve is,” she said, explaining they are all different, shaped by the local people and geography. Each councillor who spoke said they supported the reserve, but several mentioned the past. “As a resident of this area, the past has tainted a lot of things,” said coun. Marc Lefebvre, asking what the reserve can do to guard against similar problems. Hunter admitted they don’t have anything in their current bylaws to stop similar problems with “rouge elements” but that was one of the things they were

looking to the city for. “We are asking local governments to provide expertise. This region is not shy of progressive sustainability initiatives,” and are experts in governance. She said local governments are already doing a lot of the biosphere work but are not getting the credit and she sees big opportunities, including tourism. She summed up that they are not asking for anything specifically, just for Parksville to be more involved. “The key to moving forward is to establish the right governance

structure,” agreed Burger, who others praised for his work on the issue. “The biosphere reserve is near and dear to my heart,” he said agreeing that “it comes with a lot of international recognition” and the city could take better advantage of the opportunities. To that end the city and VIU are “having great discussions and looking at different models that would have longevity,” he said. “The university is very interested, but it’s still early.”

They are also looking at options like private sector involvement and coordinating with Clayoquot Sound on the west side of the Island, the province’s only other UNESCO biosphere. Council passed a motion asking staff to report back on what the city could do to help. Coun. Al Greir was the only one to vote against it, saying he can see some of the benefits but they haven’t been successful enough on their own and it would be extra work for Parksville staff. Cedar-based group makes unsolicited offer to take over biosphere AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com

The Mid Island Sustainability and Stewardship Initiative (MISSI) has made an unsolicited offer to take over administration and management of the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Reserve (MABR). MISSI president Laurie Gourlay said the biosphere offers huge ecotourism and business

opportunity that would be lost if it was the first UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) site in the country to be de-listed. MISSI, based in Cedar, sent out a news release Thursday proposing a grand regional initiative linking the biosphere, which runs from Bowser to Nanoose Bay, with the Nanaimo River watershed initiative, Nanaimo es-

tuary and the Southern Strait of Georgia National Marine Conservation Area. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for mid-Island residents. Several prominent local features, adjacent to one another, can be linked ... creating a legacy that serves all residents and visitors alike, and extends throughout our region,” Gourlay said.

They are asking local governments to join the effort and recognize Nanaimo as the green gateway to Vancouver Island. Gourlay, involved with biospheres and ecology initiatives across the country for 20 years, said he has spoken with Peter Bridgewater, secretary of the UNESCO program, and “nothing we’re proposing would take anything away from the under-

lying protection of the area.” He admits MISSI “doesn’t have deep pockets,” but believes they would be able to pull in the necessary support from other organizations. Parksville mayor Chris Burger said he hadn’t heard about the proposal, but believes there are other things in the works that will provide other options. — THE NEWS

Art needs you

B

efore us is a chance to revive arts in Parksville. Not the amount of local artists or the quality of the works they create — but the chance to help keep them in the forefront of the community and maintain a central location were existing artists and up-andcomers have a place to show off their work. Parksville’s McMillan Arts Centre (the MAC) is facing an uncertain future, caused by a decided lack of funding, which they need to keep their current location in the city open. It seems sources of money are drying up for the MAC. While they are receiving a small amount from the City of Parksville, they need more in order to reach out for more grants. They are caught in a bit of a vicious circle. Parksville does have an active art community and the MAC is at the centre of it all. Unfortunately, not all of the art community — or its supporters — is being drawn in. The MAC needs our support if it’s going to grow and change to meet the needs of local artists and people who enjoy their work. Money is one thing, and local governments can only go so far, as they are facing financial constraints of their own. Donations will continue to be sought, after all, there are bills to pay. Yet, the traditional sources of cash (such as provincial grants) are drying up and the demand upon what’s left is immense. To help shoulder this load, the MAC needs you. Finding people willing to help, then, falls to the expertise of people — and the MAC needs those people now. People with expertise in finding grants. People whose ideas on promoting art can lift up this place of light and colour. And people who want to live in a community that supports and shows off its artistic talent. The efforts of the Oceanside Community Arts Council (they run the MAC) will come down to people’s support and the answer you make to the questions: Do you think your community is a better place with art, music and dance? And, what are you willing to do to keep all of that here?

QUOTABLE:

Letters RAIL LINE PIECEMEAL On economic grounds the E&N Railway is simply not sustainable and that has been made very clear in study after study. Today the line is a little more than a piecemeal operation involving a few freight movements, and the heavily subsidized operation of the Via Rail Dayliner and its very small ridership. Furthermore, the impact of “freight” on the rail crossing that we have in Qualicum Beach would, we feel, result in serious congestion. M & D COWAN Qualicum Beach

Town of Qualicum is painting itself into a corner. When I need something I cannot buy in QB, I make a list of other items I can get in Nanaimo and then make a trip south and hit all of these “big box” stores. This is money that could be spent locally! And it’s usually big money. If (and I don’t know if this is what was being discussed) the “big box” stores come to Wembley Mall, downtown QB will look like a shopping ghost town! And most of the money spent there still won’t come back to QB! WARREN BAILEY Qualicum Beach

GOUGED AT THE PUMP GOING UP? I can’t help noticing that we are continuing to be gouged at the gasoline pump here in mid-Island. I would urge drivers and shoppers to buy your gas and groceries, etc. in a more consumer friendly place like Courtenay. Look up GASBUDDY.COM and do business with those that are following the trend to lower gas prices. You could save money on a trip to Courtenay if you bought gas and groceries there. And a nice day out to boot. KEITH GRIFFIN Parksville

MISSED THE ISSUE I read Bernie Smith’s “Mitt The Twit,” with great interest, because it appears he has missed the essential issue. While excoriating Gov. Romney for a gaffe or two, Mr. Smith fails to focus on the vital issue at hand is a candidate’s philosophy of government. That is what will matter the most over the term of office and that should be where the public attention is riveted — not on a misplaced word or phrase. The great issues before the American public come November’s voting date relate to the power of government; the scope and intrusiveness of government; its ability to create incredibly complex regulations; its propensity to spend money it does not have and thereby accumulate huge deficits and debts. In those matters, where advocacy of less government intrusions falls under the general categories of ‘conservative’ or ‘libertarian’, new vice-presidential nominee Paul Ryan is leagues to the right of many Republicans of the past and present. Because he so consistently and forcefully defends such positions, his nomination is a virtual guarantee that this American presidential campaign will turn on issues instead of personalities. Parksville motorcyclist injured in crash SAANICH — Two motorcycle riders remain in Victoria General Hospital recovering from injuries after a chain reaction collision Aug. 16 on the Pat Bay Highway. The crash was initially reported by police as a motorcycle rear-ending a truck, which had rear-ended a car that had stopped for a road crew near Claremont Road, at about 12:20 p.m. on Thursday. It now appears there was no road crew at all, police say, possibly just driver inattention

and a congested highway. A 47-year-old male motorcycle driver from Parksville and his passenger, a 43-yearold woman from Courtenay, were thrown from their Harley Davidson after braking hard to avoid a GMC Sierra pickup which had rear-ended a Toyota Matrix. The northbound motorcyclists where thrown onto the road and under the back of the Sierra, police say. The drivers of the Sierra and the Toyota, residents of Metchosin and

Saanich, were not injured. The collision is still under investigation by the Saanich trafďŹ c safety unit. Alcohol is not considered a factor in the crash. The incident came one day after, and drove home Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom’s announcement of a $3 million project to improve safety on that stretch of the Pat Bay. The crash was in the exact area where crews plan to install a “congestion aheadâ€? sign. —Saanich News/Black Press

OPINION

Nature primeval — let it be, for our sake

A

re land, forest, birds, plants, sky and water valuable only if they generate taxes for its community? Should any part of these be demolished or lessened because they’re not on the tax roles or spending money? Are taxes and the economy everything in the greater scheme of things? In the early days of North America’s European settlement, trees and forests and animals were endless and uncountable. They were in the way; they were the enemy, and so they were hacked at, pushed back, and slaughtered to make way for humans. For hundreds of years, few people ever thought about the forests or the animals coming to an end. It’s true it’s hard to see the forests for the trees when you’re standing on the ground. With the age of air travel, the continent’s growing bald spots became visible.

Gradually, some realized forests and their inhabitants were finite. Some of them even began to understand that without our natural heritage we’d be without a lot of other things. But haughty humans that we are, we too often turn a blind eye to the disappearance of “natural” things in our sphere. Our faith in the human technology that allows us to lead easy, comfortable and sheltered lives tricks us into believing that the loss of a chunk of bush here, some old growth there, a few bugs and weeds, a view of sky or mountains, or the mirror surface of the sea at our doorstep cannot possibly affect our well-being. What hubris! Do you truly “see” the trees in those woods as you walk or drive by; do you thrill to the mountains etched against the blue vault of sky, feel the mystery, the secrets, the solace they encompass?

What about the homes, food and shelter they provide? (No, not for you, for the creatures who call them home.) Do you think of the life that surges there through all the seasons? Do you give any thought to the wonders that can be found there? Wonders that had evolved, been tested, and found satisfactory ages before we came up with our own “modern miracles” But would a subdivision or higher buildings not be an improvement? After the land was cleared, the houses built, the owners moved in, how much and for how long would the predicted benefits be felt in our community? In the long run, would all the storefronts be full, would more people be spending more money (locally), would taxes go down, would Qualicum Beach be a better place to live? What makes Qualicum Beach a “desirable address” right now? So far, it’s a com-

We still have patches of true forest, relatively clean beaches, clear air, sensibly low-rise buildings and views of the mountains. These are what make Q.B. special — but they’re being chipped away at. That’s how the natural world which we enjoy is being endangered beyond repair. And why should we work to save these attributes? They should be saved to save our souls. Deep in every human is a need to touch the earth and the earth’s wild things. It’s a need too often

Parksville’s Doug Courtice has written a book about his years up north.

Remembering the Yukon

H

e went north for two years but stayed for 14 and Doug Courtice, who now calls Parksville home, said his experience of living in the Yukon had a big impact on his family and he wants to ensure the memories of residing in the land of the midnight sun live on. That is why he has penned his first book, Yukon Bound. Courtice has been retired from his career as an educator for 10 years now but he has kept himself busy in Parksville not only writing, but as the vice-president of Friends of Foster Park. About eight years ago Courtice, who lives just around the corner from the park, got involved with the group that has for the past 15 years been embracing Foster Park and said the volunteer work has been very rewarding. Courtice is also proud of his book. The paperback is a collection of real life experiences and adventures that he and his wife Mary and kids Tara and Kent had the pleasure of living. The book describes some humorous tales and northern adventures that occurred when the family relocated from Saskatchewan to the Yukon, where Courtice continued his career as a teacher and school administrator. He said it was his intention to stay in the north for only two years, but two years turned into14. “I wrote it (the book) because I wanted to have details for my granddaughters who hear about where their dad and grandparents lived for 14 years,” he stated, adding the

stories are about the people he met and the events that occurred as he remembered them. Courtice said they left the Yukon after his children were ready to go to university. The family moved to Calgary, then to Squamish and eventually Parksville, where Courtice and his wife are now making more fond memories living in the neighborhood he said is home to a real jewel in the city. “If you go by Foster Park almost any time you will find retired folks sitting on benches reading books, the Mother Goose Words on Wheels bus with kids, moms with babies in their arms and kids having a great time in the playground. In the summer, the RDN has kids camps, people walk their dogs and have picnics,” he said and added the city is enthusiastic about the great work the group does in the park. Some of the events the group organizes in the neighborhood green space include the annual pumpkin walk and Easter egg hunt. He said for now he is happy to continue his work that benefits the park and the city. Foster Park is located at Pym Street and Sanderson Road. You can purchase a copy of Yukon Bound, which is for sale at the Parksville Chamber of Commerce Visitor Information Centre at 1275 Island Highway East. — by Brenda Gough/originally published Feb. 28, 2012

Neighbours come out to play in Errington

Parade, dance, a tribute and plenty of fun mark the annual Hi Neighbour Day LISSA ALEXANDER

T

he Hi Neighbour Day Parade was ďŹ lled with its usual colorful and enthusiastic characters, from young kids on bikes to aerobic dancers, stilt-walking-ute-players and Errington's Taekwondo School showing off their skills. The parade was preceded by an art and craft display, the annual zucchini races, and a farmer's market. Following the parade there was a tribute to long time Errington Hall contributor Murray Chantler. A dance was scheduled to ďŹ nish off the day at 9 p.m. with world fusion group Tambura Rasa. See more photos at THE NEWS’ Facebook page.

Art and dance in Coombs Volunteer brings SPCA LISSA ALEXANDER

reporter@pqbnews.com

A new workshop from Dancestreams Youth Dance Company is combining art and dance this month in Coombs. Art and the Dancer is a oneday workshop that will teach dance, by a highly trained classical ballet and contemporary dancer, and construct plaster performance masks by an experienced art teacher. Maiko Miyauchi from Vancouver started her ballet training when she was four years old in Japan. She said she knew she wanted to be a dancer from a young age. “My family thought I was crazy because as soon as I started speaking all I said was ‘I want to be a ballerina.’” At four, she was accepted by a junior ballet company in Tokyo and so began her training. Although she said she’ll be a ballerina in her heart forever, she broadened her horizons and began training in jazz and hip hop and fell in love with both, she said. She then added urban and contemporary dance to her resume as well. Miyauchi has danced on TV

and movie sets including the 2011 Warner Bros. film Sucker Punch and she was a Kung Fu girl in a commercial for New Balance running shoes. She was also asked to join the successful Canadian contemporary dancing group The 605 Collective, with whom she has been touring with and presenting the show Audible! in Canada and the United States. Miyauchi will be teaching hip hop and urban influenced contemporary dancing at the

Art and the Dancer workshop. She said these days it’s important to be open to many styles of dance as well as art. Miyauchi said she has not seen many of these types of workshops in B.C. so she’s extremely excited to work with the youth and the art teacher Sara Stone, who has been teaching art for over eight years. Stone is currently the art teacher at Ladysmith Secondary School and has instructed in district and private schools, as well as summer school. Both teachers will guide the young dancers to explore how art can influence dance and vice-versa. Art and the Dancer is for ages 12 and up and takes place on Sun., Aug. 26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Bradley Centre, at 975 Shearme Rd. in Coombs. Pre-registration is required. E-mail dancestreams@shaw. ca or call 250-723-9525 for more information or to reserve a spot. For more on Miyauchi and her dance company Bare Movement visit www.mimamima.com.

Degage Fashions opens store in Qualicum Beach Chemainus-based custom clothing store owner branches out and opens a new location in the mid-Island LISSA ALEXANDER reporter@pqbnews.com

When a pregnant Sheri Dusseault was fired from her job over 20 years ago, she had no idea what a blessing it was. There she was, six months pregnant, feeling down and out and wondering how she was going to make a living, when she got the idea to make and sell a bit of handmade jewelry. It worked. “Right away I was making way more money than I ever did and having way more fun,” she said. She was at a craft fair selling ceramic jewelry when she got talking to another vendor who was using ceramic paints on clothing. Another idea grabbed hold of her. She took the money she made at the fair and headed

for Wal Mart to buy some oversized T-shirts (this was back in the ‘80s when women loved big shirts tied up on the side.) She made six that night using bright colours, flowery patterns and abstract designs, and the next day they were sold within an hour. Dusseault started designing her own clothing and was soon approached by sales representatives who took her products across Canada. It was all very exciting, she said, she was traveling a lot and busy designing and selling her clothing, everything seemed to be going great, except one thing. She now had two young children, and she hardly ever got to see them. “So I threw up my hands in despair one day at the lifestyle and decided I’m going back to

the Island and opening a store.” Dusseault spent her teenage years in the Cowichan Valley and wanted her children to have a similar small town life and not be raised by nannies, she said. So she went back to the drawing board and opened a small store called Degage Fashions in Chemainus; Degage is an 18th century word for a woman who is comfortable with her beauty. For the first few years, Dusseault sewed every single stitch and waited on every customer. She specialized in classic designs using high quality fabrics (as many as she could from Canada) and would also do custom designing. She would close her store when she had to pick her kids up from school and open it back up when they returned. See STAR EMPLOYEE, page A27

Examine your options on income splitting

S

pouses are allowed to split qualified retirement income with their spouse or common-law partner. This can result in a reduction of family taxes and can also minimize the impact on income-tested tax credits and benefits. If you have a spouse, or common law partner, who is in a lower tax bracket, you and your spouse will be able to elect to have up to 50 per cent of eligible income transferred to the lower income spouse. Eligible income is defined as income eligible for the pension income credit. Under age 65, only income received directly from a pension plan or received because of the death of your spouse qualifies for pension income splitting. Income from other registered plans such as RRIFs, annuities purchased with your RRSP and Deferred Profit Sharing Plans are only eligible for splitting if you are age 65 or older. Oil reďŹ nery proposed for Kitimat TOM FLETCHER Black Press

VANCOUVER – A Victoria businessman is heading up a proposal to build a $13-billion oil reďŹ nery in Kitimat. David Black, chairman and owner of Black Press, announced Friday he wants to build a world scale oil reďŹ nery at Kitimat, B.C. Black told a news conference in Vancouver Friday he is submitting an environmental assessment application to build a “world scaleâ€? oil reďŹ nery on behalf of Kitimat Clean Ltd., a company owned by Black. The application to the B.C. Environmental Assessment OfďŹ ce is expected this fall. The proposed reďŹ nery would be big enough to process all the diluted bitumen carried by Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway pipeline. Black said he has had extensive discussions with Enbridge and other players in the Canadian oil industry, but none has so far offered to back the project. Black said he will use his own money to ďŹ nance the proposal through environmental assessment, which he expects to cost several million dollars. After that, he said investors would be needed to complete it, assuming both the reďŹ nery and the pipeline receive approval.

“I see myself as a catalyst to make this happen,â€? said Black, who is working with Glenn McGinnis, a consulting engineer and former manager of the Ioco oil reďŹ nery in Port Moody. The reďŹ nery would produce 240,000 barrels per day of diesel, 100,000 barrels per day of gasoline and 50,000 barrels per day of kerosene or aviation fuel, reďŹ ned from heavy oil. That was 21 years ago. Now the store in Chemainus is twice the size and she has opened a factory in the town with industrial machines and professional seamstresses. Dusseault said she has always loved Qualicum Beach, and when one of her star employees, Cindy DeVries, mentioned her husband was being transferred there and she’d be moving, the two saw an opportunity. The store was opened in June of this year and they gained employee Bea Spilloway. Dusseault said she and her staff do a lot of custom work these days where ladies choose their style and fabric, or even revive an older, loved garment — or recreate it. Ladies appreciate these custom outďŹ ts when very often they may be one size on the top and another size on the bottom, and usually end up compromising unhappily, she said. Women also like original garments and are thrilled to have clothes designed and made in Canada, she said. The clothes are excellent for traveling, Dusseault said, as they don’t wrinkle, and the ageless designs and quality materials used allow them to be worn for years. Dusseault said a grand opening in June saw over 200 people who were all very warm, welcoming and encouraging. Degage Fashions is located at 172 2nd Ave. W. in Qualicum Beach. The store is open 9:30 to 5 Monday through Saturday and 11-4 on Sundays. For more information call 250-594-2290.

STEVEN DALEY PEARCE

It is with great sadness that the family of Steven Daley Pearce say their final earthly goodbye to a wonderful Son, Brother, Father, Husband & Step-Father. Steve fought a decades long battle with cancer, moving on to The Lord on Monday, August 13th 2012. At heart, Steve was a cowboy, from his early years on the family farm in Ontario. Horses were his first love until he found motorcycles. After getting his Motorcycle Mechanic’s license, Steve lived worked and raced as “The Wheely King.â€? Fate took a hand and sent him to Esso, where during a prestigious career as Lubrication Specialist & Chemist, Steve received accolades and awards for his innovation and inventions. Leaving Esso, but staying with his field of expertise, Steve partnered with Ross Gilley to form “Lakeland Oilâ€? and enjoyed many happy successful years in the Okanagan before moving on. Steve was a key operative in U.S. Banks’ Petroleum Software Division “Adventâ€? as their sole Canadian representative until the sale of the company. After a move to Vancouver Island, Steve’s life changed once more with a new marriage and a job with Enex fuels, where he made countless contacts and forged many firm friendships. Steve was a Champion Shotgun Shooter and an active member of the Single Action Shooting Society spending countless happy hours with Caribou Lefty, Sodbuster, Too Dusty, Too Slim, Too Thirsty and all the other Posse Too’s. He cherished his time with all. A great friend, a hard worker, a man of his word and a man of The Lord, Steve was the guy ready with a smile, a handshake, and a helping hand. Left to mourn the huge hole he leaves in their lives, are his Mother, Marlene Pearce, his siblings : Sandra Styrna, Sheila Rodger (Malcolm), Sharon Foofat (Jules),Stuart (Kathy) Pearce, and all his beloved nieces and nephews, every one his special favourite. Steve’s children (by wife Cathy Ryan) were his most treasured possession. Son Sean Pearce, wife Emily and only grandchild Liam, Son Ryan Pearce, Daughter Stephanie (“special baby girlâ€?) and husband Jeff Gibson will live forever in his heavenly heart. Patricia (Pepper) Pearce, Stepdaughter Althea Rose, & Tucker the Schoodle are thankful for the 3 ½ all too short years we shared together in our little home by the beach. A funeral for Steven will be held at Parksville Fellowship Baptist Church, 550 Pym St. Parksville, B.C. on Friday August 24th at 2:00 pm. A light tea will follow at which time we invite and encourage any and every one to share memories. In lieu of flowers, please choose a 3rd world charity as was Steve’s wish to spread sunshine in dark corners.

** A very special thank you to our family Physician, Dr. Robert Macarri for his unfailing support and compassion during troubled times. We would also like to thank the many caring hands that treated Steve during his months at Vancouver General Hospital and in particular the wonderful team at 8th oor Step down unit .**

Friend Mother Daughter We still hear your laugh, but can’t believe your not here. You left a lasting impression, which we all hold dear. We know you are watching us all from above, know in your heart your are truly loved. Sometimes the words are hard to find, but you are always on everyone’s mind. If there was a wish that I could give, is that there was a phone where you now live, as there is a little man down here that needs to say

“I love you Mommy and I’ll be okay. Christina, Ladonna & Sam.

HIKING

CPR trail offers spectacular mountain views

A party of four hikes the CPR trail from Cameron Lake to the top of Mt. Cokely on an overnight adventure STEVEN HEYWOOD editor@pqbnews.com

M

ount Arrowsmith has been much in the news lately — more specifically, the fate of the Mt. Arrowsmith Biosphere group. They are trying to stay alive and have been asking for help in managing this United Nations-designated biosphere on the east coast of Vancouver Island. A chance for an overnight hike up the old CPR trail from Cameron Lake to Mt. Cokely — which offers great views of Mt. Arrowsmith itself — seemed like the perfect chance to see the mountain for which the biosphere is named. Mt. Arrowsmith, the largest mountain peak in the south portion of the Island, affects the environment all around it. There are times when the clouds and fog are socked in over Port Alberni and the weather stays clear of Qualicum Beach and Parksville — it’s all affected by the mountain. From atop Mt. Cokely, one can see both sides of the Island, and how imposing Mt. Arrowsmith is to all of the communities in its neighbourhood. The hike itself was set up a few weeks ago. Some friends and I had climbed Mt. Benson in Nanaimo a few months ago in the snow, looked north-east, and set our sights on Mt. Arrowsmith. It was to be an overnight adventure, come rain or shine. But this time, during the summer.

The sun rises over the Strait of Georgia and the City of Parksville.

We selected the old CPR trail route from Cameron Lake. Now part of the Regional District of Nanaimo’s Mt. Arrowsmith Massif Regional Park, the trail was originally used by the railway to take travellers to the peak, to see the Island from a decidedly

unique perspective. We made sure to start out on a Friday and later in the day so we didn’t run afoul of road construction work being undertaken by Island Timberlands. Hikers should be aware that alongside a portion of the old CPR trail route, blasting and tree falling is a real hazard during the week. The CPR trail itself is a four-hour trek from Cameron Lake to the old ski hill area (now long abandoned) on Mt. Cokely. Along the way, there are multiple switchbacks, taking hikers up approximately 1,000 meters. The route is much longer, however, and hikers need to be well prepared with enough water and supplies. There were, however, a few people on day trips and runs up the route, to a lookout about half-way up the trail. There are plenty of places to stop and rest — from small waterfalls beneath a well-kept, wooden bridge, to a trail intersection point where Whiskey Jacks emerge from the trees and are not afraid of landing upon resting hikers in search of a treat. Laden with backpacks, it took the four of us close to six hours to complete the route and summit the mountain top. Nearing darkness, we decided it best to make camp there. At 1,631 metres above sea level, Mt. Cokely is only around 200 meters smaller than Mt. Arrowsmith, yet offers some spectacular views on its own. See MASSIF HAS PROFOUND, page A34

We had planned to get to the top of Mt. Arrowsmith itself the next day, but work plans for some of the hikers on this trip meant we didn’t have the proper amount of time to hit that goal. We were, however, satisfied in reaching

the top of Mt. Cokely. From there in the early morning hours, we watched the sun rise over the Straight of Georgia and shine brightly onto the face of Mt. Arrowsmith — making for excellent views and pictures. With the morning

light upon the area, we saw how such a mountain and the land around it, can have such a profound impact upon the region. We may have not come to any grand conclusions about the future of the biosphere, but we did see why the region was designated as such. The massif overlooks so much of the mid-Island and from its peaks, the connections between communities can plainly be seen. After a quick breakfast and packing up our camp site, we four headed down the mountain, vowing to return, take an alternate route, and reach the top of Mt. Arrowsmith itself. The return hike was a lot quicker (with lighter packs and all), taking around three hours to descend to our waiting vehicles. The CPR trail is a popular route, and well-marked. To learn more, visit the Regional District of Nanaimo’s website at www. rdn.bc.ca, search under ‘Services’ and find the ‘Parks’ link for more information about the route.

Brave Whiskey Jacks take snacks right out of your hand — if you remain still.

Portions of the CPR trail are level and well-travelled. Others are quite steep and it will take a moderate level of fitness, good footwear and a lot of water to be able to complete the four-to-sixhour, one-way trip to the summit of Mt. Cokely.

HOCKEY

Plenty of talent at Gens main camp STEVEN HEYWOOD editor@pqbnews.com

The pace was quick and the hockey was skilled during Sunday’s intra-squad game between two teams of Generals hopefuls. The Parksville-based Oceanside Generals Junior B hockey team wrapped up their weekend main camp Sunday with the White versus Red game, and opened the doors to the public, free of charge. A small crowd of hockey die-hards were on hand to watch the game. “They were all pretty tired,â€? said Gens coach Brent Desmerais of the players, adding they were completing a busy, competitive camp, whose level of talent surprised him. There are around eight players from last year’s squad back on the ice, being pushed by newcomers from Parksville, Powell River, Nanaimo and Port Alberni, said the coach. “Overall, the skill was a lot higher than I had expected,â€? Desmerais continued, noting that is going to make his decisions tougher when it comes time to pare down the crowd to a roster of around 25 players. “We were looking for players who are strong (on defense),â€? the coach said about what he and his assistant coach were looking for this weekend. “We do have a few, older 20-year-olds who are able to guide the younger players along.â€? Some of the younger players, however, were there to test the veterans. Desmerais had high praise for Chandler Bruyckere, 17, originally from the Parksville area. Bruyckere played hockey at Notre Dame college in Wilcox, Saskatchewan. “I was impressed by his play,â€? said the coach. “He’ll be moving on to the next level soon.â€? Desmerais had ďŹ ve goaltenders on the ice Sunday, giving each a chance to battle for one of the three spots with the Generals. “We’re looking for a solid goaltender,â€? he continued, “two guys who can challenge each other and get along.â€? He added a Gen from last season,

the arduous bike ride. “How often do you get a chance to do something like this and make a difference? Martindale asked, adding he also had plans to participate three years ago, but was unable due to a knee injury. “We’re simply just riding a bike, which is the easy part. It’s the kids who have to go through treatment, they’re the real heroes out of all this. Martindale has also lost an uncle and cousin, who had two young daughters, to cancer.

“We’ve all lost someone, it’s kind of the one great uniďŹ er that everyone has a cancer story.â€? He said the experience was “uplifting,â€? as many of the children, although sick, behaved as they should -- like kids. The riders held a casino-themed fun night for the children, where many laughs were shared. To be able to give happiness back to a child who’s going through chemotherapy or cancer, is priceless, Martindale said. Although seemingly reserved and stoic, Martindale said it will be emotional once the ride begins Sept. 23. “It’ll be very emotional, too, going through all of these towns and seeing the support that perhaps the RCMP hasn’t had lately.â€?
