Gower Roberts, 18, his father Russell, 56, and his brother Sayer, 22, are a New Westminster family that got to perform together in the Theatre Under The Stars production of Titanic in Stanley Park this summer.

Roberts family take to the stage Theatre performance a special experience for New Westminster acting family Grant Granger

ggranger@newwestnewsleader.com

When Sayer Roberts was on stage for the Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) production of Titanic this summer he noticed how the other performers thought it was so special for him to share the stage with his father, Russell, and younger brother, Gower. “I’ve had countless people tell me

how they would love to do it with family members but don’t have any in the business,” says Sayer, 22. The three months of rehearsals and six weeks of shows at Malkin Bowl in Stanley Park comes to an end Saturday for the New Westminster family, but the memory of something special will live on. The journey to that Stanley Park stage started almost 40 years ago. In 1973, Russell had just moved with his family from Wales to White Rock and hadn’t given an a thought to acting. He was sweet on a girl at Semiahmoo secondary

who was always busy doing different activities in the evening. One night she was going to the White Rock Players’ pantomime and said, “Why don’t you join us?” His parents, anxious for him to have a social life, said, “Go ahead.” That’s the night the bug bit. “The camaraderie, the family, the sense of sharing, the response you get from the audience,” says Russell, 56, about falling in love with acting. “We all like to hear the applause, whether it’s for you or not. It was magic.”

BLESSING AND A CURSE Russell took drama at UBC for a couple of years and then went to the Old Vic Theatre School in Bristol, England before moving to Calgary. That’s where he met Colleen Winton, who was a fifthgeneration New Westminster girl. After that they ran into each other performing in various productions across the country, and after doing the obligatory Canadian acting stint in Los Angeles (“You’ve got to try it once”), Russell landed on stage with Winton in Victoria. Rona has chosen New Westminster as the location for its first “satellite” store in British Columbia. In an effort to keep pace in the highly competitive home improvement business, Rona Canada recently announced a strategy of establishing satellite and “proximity” stores. A sign has been put up on a storefront in the Columbia Square Plaza that formerly held a women’s fitness centre, saying Rona is coming, and work has already begun on the conversion. It will be the only hardware store in the mainland portion of New Westminster. A satellite store is about 5,000 to 10,000 square feet in a densely populated area that is connected to one of its big box stores, which in New Westminster’s case will be the one on Grandview Highway in Vancouver, said Dave Carr, Rona vicepresident of retail for Western Canada. “It’s an interesting Please see RONA, A5

With the television and film industry taking off in British Columbia they decided to set up shop here. Winton initially balked at returning to her hometown, but they fell in love with a little house in Glenbrooke North. Since then they’ve found enough gigs to pay the mortgage and raise Sayer, 22, and Gower, 18. Russell says a recent report found 96 per cent of actors in Canada live below the poverty line and another determined 40 per cent of Canadian actors have left the business in the past two years. “We’re somewhat blessed and we’ve managed to buy a house,” says Russell, who has shown up on TV shows like MacGyver and movies such as Ernest Rides Again and the second Twilight flick as well as doing lots of voiceover work for animated films. “I’m not qualified for anything else, and now who wants to hire a 56-year-old know-nothing?” he quips. “It’s a passion. Being an actor you are blessed and you are cursed because when we act and perform we get to do what we want. But we’re cursed because that’s what we have to do.” A SON’S AWAKENING

Russell and his wife didn’t drag their kids around to auditions because they’d seen too many stage mothers living their lives vicariously through their children and, besides, Sayer and Gower had no interest in acting

growing up. But when Sayer was in Grade 12, New Westminster secondary decided to produce its first musical in 22 years, Annie, which he tried out for. Sayer says he was an outgoing kid until he hit his teenage years when he became quite shy. He wanted to be a magician, so he took drama to develop stage presence. That class changed his life and his focus. “It really brought back the Sayer that used to be, that had been laying dormant. [Annie] was just a great time,” says Sayer. The experience inspired him to enrol in the musical theatre arts program at Capilano University. His parents weren’t so sure about the decision because he hadn’t shown that much interest prior to Grade 12. “I sat him down for 30 minutes because it was the last thing I ever wanted [Sayer] to do,” says Russell. “I wouldn’t want to wish it on anybody.” After the half hour, Sayer remained adamant. “They thought they should just let him do this and get it out of his system and within a year he’ll give it up,” recalls Sayer, who graduated from the program last year. “It was just apparent that [musical theatre] was just right.” Gower’s passion, on the other hand, is music— composing, arranging, producing—and in the fall he’ll begin studies in music technology at Douglas College.

Sayer Roberts stars as engine crew member Fred Barrett in the production of Titanic. His brother Gower plays a bell boy, and their father is Captain Ben Smith, at the helm of the fated ship.

During high school, however, he was part of the NWSS production of Grease, at which point he figured his stage career was over. But then Russell got the TUTS role of Captain Ben Smith in Titanic, which he performed 10 years ago in Nanaimo. Its music has many a time echoed off the walls of the Roberts residence. Singing, however, has been one stage activity Russell generally shies away from—thankfully, his role in Titanic doesn’t require him to do much of it. “I’ll ad lib Shakespeare, but when I forget the words

Sayer auditioned for the role of engine crew member Fred Barrett, who does a duet with a telegraph operator. Sayer, who has done three shows with his mother before, encouraged Gower to audition for that role so they could sing together. But the director decided Gower was too young and offered him another part as a bell boy which Gower balked at. Russell, realizing it was a fantastic opportunity for

the three of them to work together, bribed Gower by promising to buy him the fully loaded laptop computer required for his course at Douglas College. Although an acting career isn’t in his plans, Gower enjoyed the experience. “It’s a lot more comfortable than it would be with a whole bunch of strangers, or even a bunch of friends,” says Gower of working with his brother and father. Says Sayer, “It’s been really neat. It’s been a lot different than with my mom. Those just so happened, it didn’t seem like a family thing. The three of us, all the boys from the family, and that we always [went to rehearsals and performances] together.” Russell’s eyes light up when he talks about being in the same production as his sons. “It’s a wonderful, wonderful treat, and I’m going to miss it when the show closes,” he says. “The overwhelming feeling is one that is shared with every parent; that of immense pride in seeing your children succeed so well and make such an impression doing something they have a passion for, and enjoying themselves so much. Two ‘major tenants’ eyeing office tower: agent Chris Bryan

editor@newwestnewsleader.com

The man in charge of leasing the office tower the City of New Westminster is building on top of the Downtown civic centre says he’s in discussions with two large tenants. And Darrell Hurst of Avison Young Commercial Real Estate is confident there will be good news before the year’s out. “We’re hopeful of some announcements in the next 60 to 90 days,” said Hurst on Tuesday. “We’re in negotiations with two significant tenancies at the very moment that would be around 50 per cent of the entire building. We’re very pleased with the activity to date.” That said, Hurst said it’s possible the majority of Merchant Square—as it’s being marketed—won’t have secured leases until the 137,000 square foot building is nearly complete, slated for December 2014. Hurst has been in commercial real estate more than 25 years, and has a long background on projects in New Westminster. He’s been involved in pre-leasing virtually every significant office project in the city in recent years, including the Royal Bank building on Sixth Avenue, the Westminster Savings building at Sixth and Sixth, and First Capital Place down at the Quay—home to the corporate offices of Westminster Savings. And he says while companies in head-office markets like Toronto and Calgary will lease before a building’s complete, that’s not usually the case in Metro Vancouver. “My historical experience working on these types of projects, particularly in the

ADRIAN RAESIDE:

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

Pipeline a big risk Alberta Premier Alison Redford doesn’t seem to understand what the fuss is about. She has been feuding with B.C. Premier Christy Clark over the Northern Gateway pipeline, ever since Clark suggested that B.C. does not get enough benefits from a pipeline which would be operated by a company with a spotty safety record in recent years. In addition, the pipeline would traverse many environmentally sensitive areas and would supply tankers which would travel along B.C.’s northern coast — which means additional risks to B.C. Redford was in Vancouver on Tuesday and reiterated that she doesn’t plan to share any of Alberta’s oil wealth with B.C. Redford’s position on sharing energy royalties isn’t unreasonable. B.C. doesn’t share resource revenues with Alberta, or any other province for that matter. But Redford doesn’t seem to fully comprehend that B.C. is taking the major portion of the risk that this pipeline will bring, with little to show for it. Yes, it would be good to have additional markets for oil. At the same time, Canadians (including Albertans) need to ask what value there is, in the long term, in shipping vast quantities of raw materials overseas. Redford and her fellow oil barons need to understand a few facts about B.C. First and foremost, almost all First Nations along the proposed route oppose this pipeline. They have sufficient legal rights to tie up this project indefinitely in court, if not stop it entirely. Second, B.C. residents do not oppose exports. Ports provide many good jobs here. But they, like most Canadians, also value the environment. B.C.’s environment is a major attraction to many of us, and a big oil spill would be completely unacceptable. – Black Press

B.C. liquor laws finally effective VICTORIA – Here’s a summer scene being played out all over North America. Family van pulls up to the corner store to stock up on a few camping essentials: pop, chips, hot dogs, a case of beer and a bottle of vodka. Not in B.C. you say? It happens every day at rural agency liquor stores around the province. As with many other issues, there is one reality for urban B.C. and another for the rest of us. Selling booze in grocery stores would presumably create anarchy in B.C cities and towns, but villagers and their visitors somehow manage it, just as everyone does across the line in Washington or Alaska. These rural agency stores are “flyspeck operators,” sniffs an acquaintance who spent his career as a union activist in government liquor stores. Picture dusty old bottles on a rickety shelf, greedy owners and poorly trained clerks more likely to sell to under-age drinkers. Similar generalizations can be heard about the hundreds of private liquor stores that have popped up around B.C. since

Tom Fletcher tfletcher@blackpress.ca

they were legalized. And in fact there have been more violations in private stores, revealed in sting operations run by liquor inspectors. In the year ended March 31, 54 private stores were caught selling to a minor, for an 84 per cent compliance rate. Only four government stores were caught, a pass rate of 96 per cent. Five rural agency stores were tested, and one flunked. But here is the telling statistic. In 2010, the government allowed liquor inspectors to employ actual minors to test stores. Previously, they hired people who looked young but were old enough to buy alcohol, As late as 2009, two out of three stores (government or otherwise) sold to them. Problem is, that’s not an actual offence. Now liquor inspectors send

in undercover teens, and relieve them of the evidence when they are allowed to buy booze. The watchdog now has teeth, and compliance has jumped. The government glossed over the poorer performance of private stores. But in fairness, three times as many private stores as government ones were targeted in the new inspections, and the gap is narrow. Government stores also have a huge built-in financial advantage in their wholesale rate, and are generally overstaffed by private sector standards. The B.C. Liberals also moved this spring to make rural agency stores easier to establish. Regulation changes brought the minimum population served from 300 down to 200, and eliminated a vague requirement for a “bona fide community” to exist around the store. Meanwhile, the big booze story this year is cabinet minister Rich Coleman’s plan to sell B.C.’s warehouse and distribution monopoly to a private contractor. The B.C. Government Employees’ Union has protested,

despite assurances that their jobs will continue. B.C.’s burgeoning craft beer industry has looked to Alberta’s all-private model and predicts higher costs. The B.C. Liberal government has been on the defensive from the start, with the NDP pointing to the paper trail of lobbyists with an apparent inside track. It’s great politics, but it matters little to consumers in an increasingly competitive but heavily taxed business. Another new regulation took effect this summer, creating a $525 fine for adults serving minors, on the job, at home or as a bootlegger. Parents who provide booze for their own under-age children are exempted. Previously, penalties applied only to licensed establishments. If the issue really is public safety and teen binge drinking, the job of government is to regulate sales effectively. Once that’s done, no justification remains for government liquor sales. COMMENT

EMail letters@newwestnewsleader.com

Readers can decide who is hypocritical Re: Cook’s comments hypocritical (NewsLeader, Aug. 10) I feel it necessary to comment on New Westminster City Coun. Chuck Puchmayr’s political rant regarding my comments to reporter Grant Granger. Puchmayr asserts that I am being hypocritical because I voted against the destination casino in 1998 and now am commenting on the delaying of projects that were using development assistance compensation (DAC) casino monies. While I have grown accustomed to Puchmayr’s method of presenting half-truths, mischaracterizations and outright whoppers, I need to set the record straight on what I actually did say. But first, a little history. I did vote against the destination casino in 1998, and I will credit Puchmayr for getting at least that part correct. I voted against the casino because of the tremendous social and financial damage that it inflicts on individuals and families. Also, because casinos

suck significant dollars out of local communities, dollars badly needed to sustain and enhance economies in those communities. Finally, and I stated this at the time, of all of the entities that get addicted to gaming, government is the worst. History will bear that out. My views on that have not changed. On the delay of DAC projects, what I actually said was, that to sustain the ill-advised city-funded foray into the development of the Downtown civic centre and office tower, some DAC projects had already been discontinued. Further, I warned that other capital initiatives such as the Massey Theatre replacement project could be at risk. I did so in my capacity as a school trustee. I stand by my statement. Civic government has neither the mandate nor the capacity to engage in the development industry, to speculate and to take on risk associated with it. That is best left to those with the necessary expertise. Minimal research will show

that office space development is risky business, given that there are other massive projects that have either been started or have been committed to. Puchmayr himself recognized the danger of the city playing developer using public money. On April 30, 2012 Puchmayr stated: “It’s a risk that I am personally not prepared to take as a member of council. I feel it’s not something I have a degree of comfort with.” Further, on May 2, 2012 he stated: “With respect to going forward and taking the risk of building the office tower using city reserves and also using financing, it’s a risk I’m personally not prepared to take as a member of council.” What is remarkable in all of this is the political game being played by Puchmayr. He voted against the city’s taking on the office tower development because as he stated, the risk was too great. Yet he has gone to considerable length to thwart the counter petition process, one that

is required by law. He voted against the project, with the full comfort of knowing that it would go through. I will leave it to the readers of the NewsLeader to determine as to who the hypocrite in this piece really is. Casey Cook New Westminster

Let’s re-think the PattuLLo Bridge… Does TransLink care about New Westminster? TransLink made its views clear when it attempted to push more trucks and traffic into our city via the United Boulevard Extension. After great public resistance TransLink backed off. The Pattullo is near the end of its life, but do we really need to replace it? I don’t think so. Remember how peaceful it was when this crossing was shut down for almost two weeks? People adapted to the situation and managed without much fuss. SkyTrain ridership was up and the majority of people got around

just fine and our city was a delight to live in. This weekend the Pattullo Bridge will be closed again for repaving, so take note of how different life is. The Pattullo was a needed crossing when it opened but do we need it today? The new Port Mann will soon open and many people will use the Pattullo as the free untolled alternative. Our city will be at gridlock. We are the oldest city in Western Canada, with a small population with no more land for expansion. Our city is the centre of the region and has put up with more than our share. We all must be proactive and tell TransLink and our leaders to move all truck traffic to the perimeter of our city as opposed to through it. If we allow the region to proceed with their plans, New Westminster may become history, not just part of it. Gavin Palmer New Westminster

Richard Armstrong, president of New West Artists (NWA), was walking up Eighth Street to the SkyTrain station the other day and in the short time it took him to get from Columbia to Carnarvon, five people had stopped to look at the NWA works of art displayed on an electrical power box at the corner of Eighth and Carnarvon. “It looks great,” said Armstrong. “I saw one woman take out her phone and take a picture of it. Even if you’re 100 feet away and looking around it grabs your attention.” The box is the first of up to 10 in the city expected to display NWA work as part of an anti-graffiti compaign. City arts and culture development director Greg Magirescu said the

city’s electrical utility had been wrapping boxes for many years using stock images. But Magirescu felt while flower patterns might look all right in a park setting, they don’t necessarily work in context of the concrete jungle. His first experiment was to put pictures of dogs owned by city residents on two boxes. More than 200 photos were submitted, and he’s still getting them. One of the boxes near Royal Columbian Hospital was vandalized the first night. Magirescu said he loves the work NWA is doing in producing art and promoting local artists, so he approached the organization. “It’s a great idea,” said Armstrong. He had seen a few other boxes around town with pictures of people’s dogs on them and he felt

the photos were too small. So when he sent out emails to NWA’s 106 members he asked for something to make people stop on the sidewalk, just like Armstrong witnessed the other day. “Go for a stark picture, like a tree on a landscape or bird in the air, because those are the ones that stand out well,” said Armstrong. “They turned out quite well.” The box at Eighth and Carnarvon is covered in 22 pictures done by 19 artists. Some are photos, others are paintings with each having the artist identified. The boxes also have the colourful NWA logo at the top and the city’s at the bottom. “It turned out beautifully,” said Magirescu. Please see Box art, a9

Box art work to ‘pop up slowly’ ⫸

continued from pAgE A8

The rest of the boxes will have different themes. The next one, said Armstrong, will have strange and quirky pictures. “We want to really be more striking with the next one.” Magirescu said a location hasn’t been chosen because he

wants to pick a site that suits the art work. “My thought is to have them pop up slowly and inconspicuously at first, and as we get more of them done people will begin to notice them and take pride in them,” said Magirescu.

The goal, he said, is for New West residents to take pride and ownership in the art. Each wrap costs about $900, said Magirescu, which mainly comes out of the utility’s budget for anti-graffiti measures with the rest coming from his department.

Dedicated meter at all stations ⫸

continued from PAGE A9

their road to zero-emmission transportation; there’s no place in the underground parkades to plug in their car and it’s difficult and expensive to retrofit existing buildings. So beginning with the Sovereign in Burnaby and the Viceroy in New Westminster, as well as other Bosa and BlueSky projects in Coquitlam, Vancouver and Victoria, up to a dozen “Bosa Volt” stations that will charge a car in six to

eight hours, will be installed in parking stalls near the buildings’ transformer room. Each station will have a dedicated meter so the owners pay the cost of hydro, rather than the strata. It’s an idea whose time has come, says Simpson. “The ability to charge electric vehicles is a huge step in facilitating a greener city and doing our part to support sustainability strategies that are being promoted by

Canadian cities. By building these charging stations within our projects, we hope to finally make it easier for people to make the green choice and invest in green alternatives.” And while Simpson concedes making the stations available is a marketing tool like any other feature or amenity in a new development, he says he hopes other builders will follow suit. “Our hope is everyone will jump onto this.” twitter.com/newsleaderfotog

Minister hints at lower Port Mann toll Tom Fletcher

tfletcher@blackpress.ca

As the Port Mann bridge replacement nears completion, Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom says he is “optimistic” that the toll can be lowered below $3 per crossing, at least for the first year. Lekstrom said in an interview this week that his discussions with the corporation set up to build the 10-lane bridge indicate it may be possible to reduce the toll rate by extending the debt repayment period. When the project was announced, a $3 toll was calculated to pay the bridge off over 40 years. Lekstrom said he has heard from many people who consider that toll too high, especially since the bridge will function with only eight lanes for the first year. The old bridge must be taken down before the last two lanes can be connected to Highway 1. So would a toonie get you across during the first year? Lekstrom wouldn’t give specific number until the entire tolling framework is released, which is expected to be in early September. There will be a second round

of ministry advertising at that time, to explain the rates and payment options that will take effect when the bridge opens in December. The eastern portion of the South Fraser Perimeter Road will open at the same time, giving drivers a faster route to the Pattullo Bridge as an alternative to the toll bridge. Lekstrom said he expects some people to try that, but soon recognize the time saving of the new Port Mann. “To divert from the Port Mann to the Pattullo and then get back onto your way, I think people might do it once or twice to say look, I’m opposed to tolling,” Lekstrom said. “But I couldn’t imagine going through that frustration to save a couple of dollars.” Lekstrom said he’s also confident that the promised rapid bus service will be in place from day one. If TransLink’s $30 million funding shortfall isn’t covered by savings from an ongoing audit of the regional transit group, he said he’s committed to work with communities to find the money. The prospect of a lower toll didn’t impress Jordan Bateman,

“ We’ll get you back on the road.”

B.C. Director of the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation. “Lower Mainland drivers already pay more than a billion dollars a year in gas taxes,” Bateman said. “We deserve to know that money is flowing into roads and bridges before we get dinged for tolls.” Lekstrom said he is also prepared for people to claim that a one-year discount on tolls is designed to ease the backlash against his unpopular government going into an election year. Critics say the same thing about paving highways and building schools and hospitals, he said.

Cyclist dies from head injury, wasn’t helmeted

Martin van den Hemel Black Press

A sunny afternoon ride with his two young children ended tragically Tuesday night when a 63-year-old Richmond man suffered a fatal injury after he fell from his bike and struck his head on the ground. Richmond RCMP Cpl. Sherrdean Turley said the tragedy occurred around 2 p.m., as the man and his two children, ages 6 and 12, were out cycling. None of them were wearing helmets, and that proved to be a fatal mistake for the father. As he was making his way

Once police notified their mother of what happened, they escorted the family to the hospital, but tragically the man passed away prior to their arrival. “This is a very sad and tragic event that very likely could have been prevented if a helmet had been worn,” Turley said. “Our condolences are extended to the family and friends of the cyclist. We would also like to thank the off-duty nurse for her assistance and obvious dedication to helping others.” newsroom@newwestnewsleader.com
