Welcome to the Kimberley Active Community Guide.

We hope that as you browse through this Guide, you discover a new program that will be interesting and habit forming. Physical fitness promotes health in both body and mind and aids in maintaining a balanced and happy life. As well as health and fitness for everyone from tots to seniors, this guide provides contacts for literacy, rehabilitation and general interest programs. Thank you to everyone who offers these local activities and programs and everyone who participates in making Kimberley a great place to live and play. Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) Family Programs

Quali¿ed early childhood educators lead learning activities, including stories, music and art to help children get ready for success in kindergarten. Each session includes a Mother Goose circle time, time to participate together in play based learning centers and a nutritious snack. Parents and caregivers are likely to discover new ways to support their children’s learning at home, and may make valuable connections with others attending the centre. To register for the StrongStart program, parents need to bring legal proof of identi¿cation for their children the ¿rst time they attend. For example, they could bring a birth certi¿cate, permanent resident card, certi¿cate of citizenship, documents issued by Immigration Canada, Aboriginal Status cards, passport/visa, or other vital statistics documents. Bene¿ts to participating children and to the parents/ caregivers include: Children will develop physically, linguistically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. Parents and caregivers will: gain knowledge of activities they can try at home to further support their child’s learning; learn about a range of guidance strategies that support social and emotional development; receive information on other services in the community; acquire knowledge of healthy snacks they can continue to feed their child at home and/or pack for that child when he or she starts school; and make valuable connections with other parents or caregivers

Interior Health Child Health Clinics

Parents are welcome to drop in to the Kimberley Health Centre to weigh their babies or discuss concerns with public health nurses weekdays from 8:30-4:30. Baby Goose

A free program for parents with babies under 1 year old. Join us for rhymes, songs and stories, guest speakers and baby topic discussions for you and your baby. Offered in partnership with CBAL-Kimberley and Public Health Nursing. Child care is provided on site for older siblings by FRP program. Healthy Moms/Healthy Babes

An outreach program for women or families seeking information, resources, services, support or community referrals during pregnancy and the ¿rst six months of parenthood. Group drop-in program offered Wednesdays, 5-7 pm at the Kimberley Early Learning Centre, includes supper, child minding and limited transportation. Making Connections: Free Program for Parents with school aged children K-Grade This 8-week program has been designed to help parents understand what goes on at school. Together, we will continue to develop skills that will help your child be a better learner. In a fun and informal way, this program creates an awareness of the learning and reading process so you can play a bigger role in your child’s education. During this program, you will learn and practice some of the skills for learning and reading to better support your child at school and in life. For Boys and Girls ages 5-7. Fun and friendship are the cornerstones of the Beaver Scout program. Through an adventurous program of outdoor activities, creative play, music, and cooperative games, Beaver Scouts enjoy time with their friends, learn how to get along within a group, and develop con¿dence to be themselves. Cub Scouts

For Boys and Girls ages 8-10. Challenging hikes, weekend camps, and an introduction to water activities like canoeing and kayaking are just a few of the fun outdoor adventures that Cub Scouts enjoy. With the motto of “Do Your Best” front and centre, Cub Scouts are encouraged to try new and challenging activities. Learning important ¿rst aid skills, paddling a canoe for the ¿rst time, or leading a game at camp will open the door for Cub Scouts to try other adventures they never thought possible. Scouts

For Boys and Girls ages 11-14. The focus of this age group is to develop personal growth through challenging outdoor camps based on minimal impact camping. Scouts learn to move through the land without leaving a trace. Scouts learn to take responsibility for themselves and the world around them. Through their motto of “Be Prepared” Scouts experience a variety of activities such as high ropes training, search and rescue skills, and community involvement. An organization for young people, ages 6 to 21. Our Motto is “Learn to do by Doing”. Have fun while learning and participating in Public Speaking, Demonstrations, Educational Displays and carrying out a project in a variety of areas, such as crafts, sewing, foods, beef, horse, sheep or a topic of interest to you. Kimberley Gymnastics

Recreational, pre-competitive and competitive gymnastics and trampoline programs for all ages with Àexibility in program scheduling. Birthday and Event Parties are planned and supervised by a certi¿ed gymnastics coach. Summer programs are scheduled week-to-week to work around family vacations and other programs. At least once a week, turn off the TV and do something more physical. Take a walk, ride a bike, play a game with your kids, spend 10 minutes stretching... almost anything will be more active than sitting on the couch!

5 Kimberley Girl Guides Mountain View District

An organization for girls & young women from ages 5 & up (Sparks, Brownies, Guides, Path¿nders and Sr. Branch units). This organization belongs to the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) which is the world’s largest organization of girls and women. Guiding is an accepting environment with diverse and exciting programs and activities that offer the chance to discover new interests, learn valuable leadership skills and make lasting friendships. It provides opportunities for personal growth, mentoring and national/international travel as well as opportunities for post-secondary scholarships. Kimberley Seahorse Swim Club

Offers swimmers ages 7 to adult an opportunity to develop swimming skills, endurance and team spirit in a fun, competitive atmosphere. Novice program for ages 6 and under. The winter session is targeted for the competitive swimmer who wants to maintain for the upcoming summer season. Kimberley Jackrabbit Program

This is a volunteer-run group that teaches children aged 4-12 to enjoy cross-country skiing. It starts with the youngest kids joining the Bunnyrabbit program, moving on to the Jackrabbit program, and then the older children join the Track Attack program. Each different level will challenge these children in different ways with the main focus on learning how to have fun on cross-country skis. Track Attack kids start with regular dryland-training lessons in September that focus on agility, speed, and strength. Track Attack kids also have a second training day on Tuesday evenings during the winter (6 – 7:30 pm). Skiing experience is not a requirement, only enthusiasm and a smile. 6 One to One Literacy Reading Program in the Elementary Schools

A Fantastically Fun Fall Day for Kids

A PD Day is coming in October and the kids need something to do. We can help! This one-day camp is a great place for kids aged 6 - 11 to have fun, meet new people, and build self-esteem skills. The day is ¿lled with fall themed activities, crafts, events, and games. Our dedicated camp leaders make this day a memorable experience. Supervised drop-off times are a half-hour before and after camp. Kids need to bring their own drink, lunch, and snacks. East Kootenay P.A.R.T.Y. Program (Prevent Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth) This is a youth injury prevention education program that encourages youth to make smart choices with respect to all risk taking behaviours. Grade 10 students spend a full day at EKRH following a re-creation of a crash scenario when they hear presentations from a variety of community health professionals that bring real life incidents into the action packed integrated learning environment. Gyminy Crickets Play Group An early learning program with stories, crafts, games, music, combined with a gymnastics component for children from 3-5 years of age. A wonderful atmosphere for your child to learn to play, engage in social interaction and become accustomed to routines in preparation for Kindergarten. All children must be registered with Gymnastics BC. Kimberley Gymnastics and Gyminy Crickets are a non-profit society. 7 Seniors Wellness in Motion (SWIM)

A seniors-based program that provides Kimberley seniors with a healthy social opportunity including: transportation to & from the Kimberley Aquatic Centre, a therapeutic exercise program in the pool and a group social. The program is targeted to isolated seniors that may live alone and who may live at risk, who may no longer drive, have little opportunity to socialize with others and those who could bene¿t from a low impact and safe exercise program. Kimberley Minor Hockey Association

A non-pro¿t recreational sport society. All players will be placed on their respective teams at playing levels to commensurate with each player’s age, playing skill and experience. Motivate Yourself to Exercise First of all, choose an activity that is fun and think of it as taking time for you. Focus on how good you always feel afterwards. Treat yourself every third time you exercise, it will keep you inspired! Sign up for a class or find an exercise buddy to help you to stick to the program. Remember, it only takes 30 days to form a new habit and then it won’t be so difficult to get moving.

Active Aging

The Active Aging program is designed to support older adults to lead independent, active and healthy lives. Through community partnerships the program will provide opportunities for seniors to fully participate in physical, social and community life programs in Kimberley. The program will also help facilitate and educate seniors on a variety of topics; affordable and accessible transportation in order to assist access to leisure and recreation opportunities, orientation to local recreation programs, inter-generational programs, information sharing among service providers, and outreach opportunities for those with physical limitations. Seniors Helping Seniors

This volunteer based program establishes a supportive connection between a volunteer and a senior in need. The program fosters a healthy social and supportive relationship allowing older persons to help other older and more vulnerable seniors engage in their community. The coordinator of the program recruits volunteers for the community; they are then matched up with a senior participant. The volunteers provide the seniors with many valuable services such as: transportation, a walking partner, social opportunities, someone to do light repairs, relief from care giving responsibilities, and peer support. Volunteers that are seniors themselves who continue to utilize their life long skills, by providing support to more disadvantaged and vulnerable seniors. Kimberley Mountain Bike Skills Park and Skate Park

Located at the corner of Rotary Drive and Marsden Street, these parks are connected by beautiful creekside trails and provide both skaters and cyclists with the opportunity to carve and Àow through bowls and launch jumps. Located at 480 North Star Drive, the club maintains 35km of snowcat groomed and track set trails (for skate and classic technique skiing) as well as 5km of single track for those preferring a more back to nature experience. A new 1200 sq ft lodge is open daily for relaxation during skiing or après ski activities with complimentary hot chocolate, tea and coffee. Skiing typically starts in November and lasts until April thanks to extensive summer grooming as well as regular winter groom¬ing with a Bombardier BR 275 and Ginzu groomer. There is also a 3.5km trail that is lit every night during the ski season from dusk until 10pm. Special events this coming season will include a “Lantern Ski” on New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day, and Kootenay Cup Ski Races for competitors of all ages and talents. Volunteers for these events are Club members and locals and any help is always appreciated. Other programs offered at the Nordic trails include the Jackrabbit Program (a fun, learn to ski program for kids aged 4-12), the Kimberley Nordic Racers Program (a ski-racing program for kids aged 10-18), and a Masters Skiing Program that has been a great success and will continue this season. Kimberley Curling Club

This ski-racing program is for cross-country skiers aged 10 – 18 who like to have fun, train hard and race. Training for older team members starts in early May with dryland training activities like running, hiking, biking, roller skiing and strength training. Team members compete in regional, provincial and national level competitions, including the Canadian national championships. This program is for skiers of all abilities, and any age over 18 years old (you don’t need to be over 50 years old to be part of this group). This year we plan on having 2 instructional sessions/week, as well as 1 non-instructional session/week, starting in early December, and ¿nishing in early March. We have 4 trained instructors who cater to all ski levels. Instructions will be given for skating and classic technique. There are also 2 classes on waxing, and at least 2 video analysis sessions. The Lois Creek Trails located adjacent to the Townsite and Morrison subdivisions are popular for biking and hiking as well as cross-country skiing in the winter months. The NorthStar Rails to Trails is a paved trail for running, walking, biking and blading that runs from the Civic Centre to Cranbrook. The Lions Trails run between Kimberley and Marysville and give you a choice of pathways ranging from narrow to wide, Àat to rocky and sunny to shady.
