Semiahmoo Secondary alumnus mourned at informal memorial in White Rock

Plane crash victim ‘lived life to fullest’ Dan Ferguson Staff Reporter

Dallas Smith was remembered as a loyal friend who lived life to its fullest at an informal memorial Tuesday night in White Rock. The 30-year-old Smith, a White Rock native, was one of four people aboard a PA 30 Piper Twin Comanche that crashed the day before, 30 kilometres

west of Kelowna, near Brenda Mines. The B.C. Coroner’s Office said Smith was pronounced dead at the scene and the other occupants of the plane were airlifted to Kelowna General Hospital and Kamloops Royal Inland Hospital. At PAN press time Wednesday, all were listed in critical condition. “It still doesn’t feel real,” long-time friend Tim Proznick said following the

Tuesday night get-together. “Any second, you’d expect Dallas to make an entrance.” Proznick met Smith at Semiahmoo Secondary, and they kept in touch. Proznick, a professional musician, said he could almost always count on seeing his friend in the audience at his concerts. Smith was part of a close-knit group of

friends from the White Rock and South Surrey area, some of them dating back to elementary school. Another longtime friend, Alexis Bennett, called them “the boys,” now young men, who all moved to Vancouver about the same time after leaving school. The “very good looking” Smith was genuinely charming, Bennett said. see page A4

Nurse remembers

Dieppe insight shared Alex Browne Staff Reporter

A special commemoration at the White Rock Elks Club this Sunday will mark the 70th anniversary of an event – the ill-fated raid on Dieppe – that some would prefer to have forgotten. Among them is the event’s honoured guest, club member Lillian Hanna, 88. She doesn’t have to learn about Dieppe or imagine what it was like. She was there, as a teenaged British Army nurse on a hospital ship Lillian Hanna that cared for Canadian casualties evacuated from the beach. She hasn’t talked much of that time since then – hasn’t wanted to – but agrees with event organizer Pat Maxwell it’s important for post-war generations to know, and remember, this history. The Dieppe Raid, which took place on Aug. 19, 1942, must surely rank as one of the most disastrous military operations of the Second World War. see page A10 Starting today…

Canadian shoppers and their detractors vent online

Cross-border commentary goes south Dan Ferguson Staff Reporter

It all started when a Bellingham resident, frustrated at the lineups at the local Costco and the number of Canadians in those lineups, decided to vent online. The unnamed person was feeling frustrated about the rudeness of the “milk piranhas,” the less-than-affectionate phrase applied to Canadian Costco shoppers who can reduce chesthigh pallets of inexpensive American milk to

nothing in a matter of seconds. So on July 19, that person created a Facebook page, called “Bellingham Costco needs a special time just for Americans.” “Them Canadians can be rude,” the site description said. “The lines are crazy. We aren’t on a vacation and have an RV to hang out in like those Canadians.” The result was an explosion of irate commentary from indignant Americans and Canadians. “The infestation of Canadians in Bellingham

has downright gotten out of control,” said one. “I say we boycott Costco until we get the treatment we deserve,” another said. Ticked-off Canadians objected to being portrayed as ill-mannered. At least one filed a “hate” page complaint to get Facebook to pull it, while others returned fire online. “I would suggest that you thank your lucky stars and stripes that Canadians are pumping the amount of money into your local see page A4
