Motorists: beware of speed hump on 28 Avenue outside Shortreed Elementary School. School zone signs are normally turned around during summer recess but this warning of a speed hump in the “trafficcalmed neighbourhood” has

also been turned around for some unknown reason. The speed hump has not been removed during summer recess, and motorists should not exceed 30 k/ph or they could do damage to their vehicles as well as rattle their teeth if they hit the hump at the posted 50 k/ph.

A neighbourhood dispute is the reason a 20-year-old man shot at his neighbour and caused a police stand off in south Aldergrove on Monday night, says the stepfather of the victim. Langley RCMP confirm that dozens of police and the Emergency Response Team were called to the 1900-block of 269A Avenue late Monday night after shots were fired. The man wasn’t injured but the shooter barricaded himself inside a home around midnight and refused to come out. The ERT team was able to get the man out and arrest him without incident around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, confirmed Langley RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Holly Marks. “There are some mental health issues involved,” she said. Langley RCMP said the victim approached his neighbour shortly after

midnight to discuss some property damage that had occurred. After a short discussion, the victim of the property damage returned to his own home. Shortly after that, a number of shots were fired. No one was hit by the discharged bullets, said police. The shooting was a neighbourhood dispute which has been escalating, pitting a family of chicken farmers against area residents, said the victim’s stepfather. “The young man who fired rounds at my stepson’s truck is among the neighbours who are taking issue with us expanding our chicken barns,” said Cory Spitters. The victim runs a neighbouring poultry farm in the family business. Chicken farms do deal with manure, smells and use large fans for air in the barns. Spitters has a large poultry operation along with his stepson on two neighbouring properties that has been behind the

anger of some of the south Aldergrove neighbours for some time. But a recent expansion, adding three new large barns onto another property on 20 Avenue, has raised the neighbours’ ire even more, and there have been arguments, he said. According to Langley RCMP, the serious crime section is investigating this incident and may recommend a number of charges against the 20-year-old. In the meantime, Langley RCMP’s Victim Services is offering support to the family members involved. “These people have to understand they are living in a farming community — get used to it. If you come in here and build a fancy home and then expect us to not farm, you are very mistaken,” Spitters said. He claims RCMP and bylaw officers, along with Department of Fisheries and Environment officers, have been called out to their farm by the neighbours on numerous occasions.

In March of 2013, two teams of Aldergrove Peewee/Bantam aged hockey players will represent our country in our own community at the Peewee International Friendship Hockey Tournament. Aldergrove will be hosting the world with 14 teams from seven countries coming to our town. Friendship Hockey was created by Mr. Kaneiri, a Japanese business leader whose dream was to create a hockey event where players from different countries could compete in the spirit of

friendship and fair play. Building relationships and multi-cultural community takes precedence over goals and wins in this event, which is held in a different country every two years. Although players represent their country, the teams are not selected from the elite players in minor hockey. A 20-year-old man charged in connection with two violent attacks on local transit buses, including the choking of a bus driver and the stabbing of a passenger in Aldergrove, made another appearance in Surrey Provincial Court on August 8. Steven Fayant is charged with aggravated assault for the stabbing of a 41-year-old Langley man who was getting off the bus near Aldergrove Centre Mall on Feb. 21. Fayant is also charged with

assault in connection with strangling a Surrey bus driver on Feb. 18. He appeared in court to fix a date for his trial. He is also there to deal with another charge of assault that took place on Sept. 25, 2011 in Langley. Fayant was denied bail in March and has been behind bars since the February attacks. At the time, Langley RCMP said that Fayant was arrested a couple of days later at his Surrey home. The arrest was made possible after a Langley Mountie recognized the

man from surveillance footage provided by TransLink. The victim of the stabbing wasn’t known to the suspect and it isn’t known what provoked the stabbing, said police. He was stabbed in the back as he was getting off the bus. The 41-year-old victim is recovering from the stabbing. In the Surrey incident, a rider returned to the driver and started choking him. Then the assailant suddenly let him go and ran off the bus.

Jada McKenzie-Moore Singer sets the stage for music career

Jada McKenzie-Moore is only 12 years old but the Aldergrove girl is already making a name for herself as a stage performer. Jada has appeared in six stage productions, 20 short films and sings every weekend at the Richmond Night Market, where she is also the cohost. An impressive résumé for the bubbly youth but she continues to seek new avenues to explore her talents. Among these new avenues is her entry into the PNE’s Star Showdown, which begins next Saturday, August 18. This year, Jada has made the semifinals of the talent contest, and aims to join the ranks of past winners such Michael Buble and Carly Rae Jepsen. She has done well in other competitions, making the top three of the International Village Children’s Talent Show, a finalist in the B.C. Junior Talent Search, and out of a field of 650 she made the top 40 of the Next Star competition hosted by YTV. She also received word Monday that she achieved the top six of Virtual Next Star contest, sponsored by YTV. The Virtual Next Star winner is decided by on-line votes from now until August 24. The winner gets a trip to Toronto to see

the finale, live, at Canada’s Wonderland. (Here is the link to vote for Jada: http:// nextstar.ytv.com/virtual_nextstar. aspx?vns=1434) A video of her performance of “I’m a Star” from Hello Dolly has helped gain her success. This video and several others are available for viewing on Youtube. She is one of 10 youths, aged seven to 12, selected for the PNE Star Showdown, and she plans to sing “Dynamite” from Ant Farm at the PNE’s semi-finals. If she makes the final round she plans to sing “Wide Awake” by Katy Perry, featuring seven background vocals of her own in the backing track. Jada and her family moved to Aldergrove from Richmond a year ago so that she would access to the arts programs at the Abbotsford School of Integrated Arts, and Langley Fine Arts School when she moves into her junior high school years. She is also enrolled at Kick it Up Dance Studio in Aldergrove. She achieves top grades in academics but relishes the dancing, acting and singing aspects of these schools, and would like to have a career in musical theatre when she graduates.

Grandpa, youth safe A seven-year-old reported missing while on a camping trip with his 62-year-old grandfather in the Chilliwack Lake area was found early Friday morning. “They were not missing, just overdue,” RCMP Cpl. Dale Carr, acting regional duty NCO for the Upper Fraser Valley detachment, said Friday. Carr said anxious family members in Aldergrove called police at about 10 p.m. Thursday when the pair did not return as planned. They were having so much fun camping, they decided to stay an extra night but had no way of contacting family. The area is out of cellphone range. “They were driving back into Chilliwack,” Carr said, when he saw the grandfather’s truck coming toward him on Chilliwack Lake Road at about 9:30 a.m. “I whipped around and caught up to them,” he said. “The seven-year-old was all smiles and had a good time camping with Grandpa.”

Long days, late nights and little sleep have become a daily occurrence for Jay Daulat, the owner of the Twilight Drive-In in Aldergrove. He and his family opened the Twilight Drive-In in September, 2005, two years after the Hillcrest Drive-In in Surrey was closed in 2003. Operating one of the two drive-in theatres left in B.C., Daulat is a “firm believer in the business,” and has no regrets or reservations about his line of work “There used to be lots of drive-ins in the Lower Mainland but unfortunately most were forced to close, not because of attendance but because the land became too valuable to the owners,” says Daulat, with a sigh. Finding land and long term leases is not an easy task, says Daulat, but with a little effort, anything is possible. Having built the Twilight Drive-In from scratch, running the theatre has become more than a family affair. With the help of his wife, Camla, and two sons, Vesham (28) and Vijay (24), the drive-in season begins mid-February and the theatre stays open until mid-November. Although, with dreary Vancouver weather, it’s not uncommon for that time-line to shift. May-to- September continues to be their busiest period, “primarily because that is when the summer blockbusters are released,” says Daulat. With a passion as evident as Daulat’s, it may surprise many that the film industry was not Daulat’s first dream, though he says the work was a hobby he developed as a young child. Leaving Trinidad in 1956 to study in Canada, Daulat attended the University of Manitoba and then went on to UBC where he earned a degree in petroleum geophysics. Quickly after graduating, Daulat decided that labouring in Alberta oil fields was not the career he envisioned. “In 1968, I started an apprenticeship program for film,” he says. “My first placement was at the New West Drive-In and in 1969, I started working there.” Since then, film has been a constant focal point of Daulat’s life – a central cog in his daily routine. VICTORIA – Here’s a summer scene being played out all over North America. Family van pulls up to the corner store to stock up on a few camping essentials: pop, chips, hot dogs, a case of beer and a bottle of vodka. Not in B.C. you say? It happens every day at rural agency liquor stores around the province. As with many other issues, there is one reality for urban B.C. and another for the rest of us. Selling booze in grocery stores would presumably create anarchy in B.C cities and towns, but villagers and their visitors somehow manage it, just as everyone does across the line in Washington or Alaska. These rural agency stores are “flyspeck operators,” sniffs an acquaintance who spent his career as a union activist in government liquor stores. Picture dusty old bottles on a rickety shelf, greedy owners and poorly trained clerks more likely to sell to underage drinkers. Similar generalizations can be heard about the hundreds of private liquor stores that have popped up around B.C. since they were legalized. And in fact there have been more violations in private stores, revealed in sting operations run by liquor inspectors. In the year ended March 31, 54 private stores were caught selling to a minor, for an 84 per cent compliance rate. Only

four government stores were caught, a pass rate of 96 per cent. Five rural agency stores were tested, and one flunked. But here is the telling statistic. In 2010, the government allowed liquor inspectors to employ actual minors to test stores. Previously, they hired people who looked young but were old enough to buy alcohol, As late as 2009, two out of three stores (government or otherwise) sold to them. Problem is, that’s not an actual offence. Now liquor inspectors send in undercover teens, and relieve them of the evidence when they are allowed to buy booze. The watchdog now has teeth, and compliance has jumped. The government glossed over the poorer performance of private stores. But in fairness, three times as many private stores as government ones were targeted in the new inspections, and the gap is narrow. Government stores also have a huge built-in financial advantage in their wholesale rate, and are generally overstaffed by private sector standards. The B.C. Liberals also moved this spring to make rural agency stores easier to establish. Regulation changes brought the minimum population served from 300 down to 200, and eliminated a vague requirement for a “bona fide community” to exist around

the store. Meanwhile, the big booze story this year is cabinet minister Rich Coleman’s plan to sell B.C.’s warehouse and distribution monopoly to a private contractor. The B.C. Government Employees’ Union has protested, despite assurances that their jobs will continue. B.C.’s burgeoning craft beer industry has looked to Alberta’s all-private model and predicts higher costs. The B.C. Liberal government has been on the defensive from the start, with the NDP pointing to the paper trail of lobbyists with an apparent inside track. It’s great politics, but it matters little to consumers in an increasingly competitive but heavily taxed business. Another new regulation took effect this summer, creating a $525 fine for adults serving minors, on the job, at home or as a bootlegger. Parents who provide booze for their own under-age children are exempted. Previously, penalties applied only to licensed establishments. If the issue really is public safety and teen binge drinking, the key job for government is to regulate sales effectively. Once that is done, no justification remains for government liquor sales. Despite the media focus on spills and protests against new oil pipelines proposed for B.C., about half of respondents in a new poll are open to changing their minds based on economic or environmental factors. The Angus Reid survey of 804 B.C. residents found 35 per cent completely opposed to the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway line from northern Alberta to port facilities at Kitimat. Only seven per cent indicated unqualified support for the line. Another 27 per cent said they support the Enbridge proposal but could change their minds based on economic benefits or environmental protection. Similarly, 24 per cent were opposed but open to reconsidering based on economic or environmental concerns. The survey asked participants what they think of Premier Christy Clark’s five preconditions for provincial support of the Enbridge project. About a third said they would more likely back the project if Clark’s demand of “world leading” marine and landbased spill response was met, and a similar number said they would be persuaded if the current federal environmental review supports it. Economic benefits to B.C. were cited as a factor in considering support by 32 per cent of respondents. NDP MLA Shane Simpson said the poll shows a clear trend to more opposition as people become more familiar with the pipeline issues. Firm opposition is five to one against the Enbridge proposal, and is strongest in northern B.C., he said. A proposal to twin the existing Kinder Morgan oil pipeline between Alberta and port facilities in Burnaby was supported by 37 per cent of respondents and opposed by about half. While the NDP is campaigning against the Northern Gateway project, Simpson said the NDP won’t take a stand for or against the Kinder Morgan proposal until the company makes a formal application to Ottawa that details its plans. There were 32 tankers loaded with crude oil at Kinder Morgan’s Burnaby facilities last year, and 69 in 2010. A company official said an expanded pipeline would generate 25 to 30 tanker loads per month going out through Vancouver harbour.

Enbridge vows to make their proposed pipeline ‘even safer’ By JEFF NAGEL Black Press

Enbridge Inc. is pledging to add up to $500 million in extra safety improvements to its embattled Northern Gateway pipeline project in a bid to calm fears of a possible oil spill along the proposed route across northern B.C. The Calgary-based firm announced Friday it would thicken the pipeline wall, make the pipe even thicker near major river crossings like the Fraser and Skeena and install dual leak detection systems. It also pledged: 50 per cent more remotely operated shutoff valves; more frequent in-line inspection surveys; and round-theclock staffing of pump stations in remote areas to ensure on-site monitoring, heightened security and rapid response to problems. “We recognize that there are concerns among aboriginal groups and the public around pipeline safety and integrity,” executive vice-president Janet Holder said, adding the project was already going to be state-of-the-art. “With these enhanced measures, we will make what is already a very safe project even safer in order to provide further comfort to people who are concerned about the safety of sensitive habitats in remote areas.” Enbridge estimated the extra spending at $400 to $500 million, adding to the cost of the $5.5-billion original price tag. “We have to do everything we can to ensure confidence in the project,” Holder said. The announcement came on the heels of scathing findings by U.S. regulators this month on Enbridge’s inept response to a 2010 rupture of an oil pipeline in Michigan. The provincial government has yet to take a clear position on the project, although the premier has increasingly warned it comes with high risks and little reward for B.C. Northern Gateway would carry oil sands crude from northern Alberta 1,170 kilometres west to Kitimat, where it would be loaded onto tankers for export to Asia and elsewhere. A second pipeline would bring imported condensate back to Alberta.

This past B.C. long weekend, RCMP attended two fatal crashes, resulting in three deaths. On average, the B.C. Day Long Weekend sees five people lose their lives on our local highways, said Sgt. Pierre Lemaitre, of E Division traffic services. In a four day policing blitz, from Aug. 3 to Aug. 6, hundreds of tickets were handed out: • 42 drivers lost their license for 90 days after failing a breathalyzer. • 407 people weren’t wearing seatbelts. • 1,897 were given speeding tickets. • 173 charged for using a cellphone. • 70 pulled over for driving a defective vehicle. • 24 charges of driving without due care. • 102 charges of driving contrary to Novice restrictions. • 15 charges of not wearing a helmet while driving a motorcycle. • 36 charged for not having insurance. Also this past long weekend, the Greater Vancouver Integrated Road Safety Unit worked a Sea-To-Sky Project ( Highway 99) in order to enhance road safety there.

Sgt. Marc Alexander pointed out that many motorists on the highway waved at officers and gave them a thumbs up while they were dealing with violators. Alexander said he had some interesting interactions with motorists over the long weekend. When stopped for excessive speeding the passenger of one vehicle hugged the officer. She said, “I was sitting in the passenger seat being quiet but saying to myself, ‘He is going to get a ticket.’ I am glad he did. Maybe he will slow down now.” She was perfectly happy to finish her ride in the tow truck, said Alexander. Three class 7 drivers had their vehicle’s vehicles impounded. Two were not displaying the N sign. One of these was driving contrary to licence restriction as well, due to the number of occupants in the vehicle. The drivers of more than one high end vehicle asked the officer to write “any” ticket they wanted to, just please don’t impound the vehicle.” Several drivers were stopped for excessive speeding and their vehicles were impounded.

Then your hot water tank blows, unfortunately in the evening. You phone the Township, because your main water line needs to be shut off so the plumber can fix your problem. Guess what — it’s $200 for shut-off and then another $80 to get it turned back on. Hopefully that happens during the day, otherwise it’s another $200. You are paying $280 for something nobody wants to happen to them in the first place. The bottom line is that this is 10 per cent of the taxes I pay every year — for what service? Cool-headed D-man seeks more Canada gold By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

A fast-rising young hockey defender from Aldergrove is now in Slovakia for the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament. Shea Theodore, who just turned 17 in July, is one of nine Western Hockey League players selected by Hockey Canada at the men’s U-18 national hockey camp at Toronto’s MasterCard Centre on August 6. Canada has won the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament four consecutive years, and has won 17 of 21 summer under-18 tournaments since 1991. It will play in Group B in Piestany with Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland. Group A, which consists of Finland, Russia, the Czech Republic and the United States, will play out of Breclav. Canada faced Czech Republic in a pre-tournament game in Piestany on Saturday, Aug. 11 (Canada lost 4-6) before opening the tournament against Switzerland on Aug. 13 (a 4-1 win for Canada). On Tuesday the Canadian squad scored three powerplay goals and added another while short-handed, en route to a 7-5 victory over Sweden. Canada improved to 2-0 at the tournament, and plays Slovakia on Wednesday. The top two teams from each group advance to the semifinals on Friday, Aug. 17, with the gold medal game scheduled for Saturday, Aug.

Canada’s roster is made up of 13 forwards, seven defencemen and two goaltenders. Head coach Todd Gill, assembled the roster with support from assistant coaches Yanick Jean, Scott Walker, Kevin Prendergast, and Brad Pascall. This is not Shea’s first European tournament. Shea won his first gold medal at the age of 11 when his triple-A All-Star team won all 18 games and the gold medal in Europe. Winning gold has become almost second nature for Shea, as his U-16 B.C. team won the gold at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax in February of 2011. Shea was also the most outstanding player in the history of Aldergrove Minor Hockey, consistently averaging above 125 in the plus-minus, reaching a peak of 164 in his bantam year. “In minor hockey that’s a stupendous feat,” says Troy Theodore, president of AMHA as well as Shea’s proud uncle. “In every team he’s played on, including the WHL’s Seattle Thunderbirds that he’s now with, he’s been an exceptional player.” Troy credits AMHA coaches Steve Howerton and Dan and Kris Armstrong for helping Shea develop into the player he is today.

There are very few truly gifted athletes but Shea is one; he’s just mentally zoned in and has phenomenal hand-eye coordination. “I asked him once when he was young how he could see a split-second passing opportunity and he just looked at me and said, ‘I don’t understand your question. I just do it.’” Born at Langley Memorial Hospital, Shea attended Betty Gilbert School during his elementary school years before attending his senior school years at Abbotsford’s Yale Hockey Academy, on the advice of Brad Bowen. Throughout those years Shea played for the AMHA. “Shea had the opportunity to play

It shows how hard I have worked and how far I have to go,” said Shea, in a statement prior to the camp. Shea has earned a reputation for his cool-headed and calm manner on the ice, and impressed the eastern hockey scouts during last weekend’s camp in Toronto. “Six scouts phoned Newport Sports and asked Shea’s agent Don Mehan who this player was and why they had never heard of him before; they had never seen a defender with ‘ice in his veins’ play like this before,” says Cam. Shea scored a goal in each of the three camp scrimmages.

One of the young players with the Aldergrove Minor Baseball Association has been invited to play for Team B.C. at the Bantam Girls National Championships. Deborah Ross, a student at Aldergrove Secondary School, is looking forward to the trip organized by Baseball B.C. and Baseball Canada. The 2012 Bantam Girls Invitational Championships will be held August 23-27 at Bedford, Nova Scotia. Baseball Nova Scotia and Hammonds Plains Minor Baseball host the event . All games will be played at Joan and Robert Lenihan Fields in Bedford. Team B.C. faces Alberta first on August 23, followed by a game against Ontario the next morning, and the Chicago Pioneers later that afternoon. The series moves into semi-finals on August 25, wrapping up with the bronze and gold medal games on Sunday afternoon.

One week ago, Sophie Schmidt was kneeling on the grass at Old Trafford – the legendary home field of Manchester United – with tears rolling down her cheeks following a devastating 4-3 loss to the United States in the Olympic women’s soccer semifinals. On Monday, the 24-yearold midfielder from Abbotsford walked through the arrivals gate at Vancouver International Airport to a hero’s welcome, with a bronze medal around her neck and a smile on her face. “I don’t think there are two bigger extremes,” marveled Schmidt, who helped her team bounce back from the U.S. Sophie Schmidt defeat to beat France 1-0 in the bronze medal game. “You’re absolutely gutted for the (semifinal) result – you want to be in that gold medal game, but your dreams are crushed. But to end up winning a medal anyway, it’s fantastic.”

Cutting was the first event and Stradling, 15, put down a brilliant run aboard Wild at Dawn to capture both gold medals in the event. Judges Hans Kuhn of Germany and Jan Boogaerts of Belgium both gave Stradling a perfect 20 score for the event, ahead of second place Germany with 16. Switzerland and Israel tied at 15. There were representatives from 15 countries at the Cup. Wild At Dawn is an eight-year-old American quarter horse mare by Wild Thing Dna out of Dulce Quixote and is owned by Weglöhner and Wüst. The mare is an NCHA Money Earner and was Bavarian Champion Open. “This is an amazing horse,” Haley said afterwards. “I’m so happy about this success!” Stradling was the 2010 BCRCHA Junior Youth Champion and AQHA Regional Cutting Junior Youth Champion, as well as 2011 BCQHA Youth Year End Champion. Stradling also picked up a buckle at the Calgary Stampeded last month, in cutting competition. Cutting is an event in which the rider and horse take a cow out of a herd of 45 one at a time and prevent it from returning to the herd. Stradling also enjoys competing in hunterjumper events.
