A destructive invasive plant called Japanese knotweed has taken root in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, and is threatening to damage roadways, crack building foundations and destroy fish habitat. The bamboo-like plant is strong enough to bore through concrete and so virulent, it can regrow from as little as 0.2 grams of root remains. “It’s impossible to dig them up,” says Jennifer Grenz of the Invasive Species Council of Metro Vancouver, which has been working to eradicate the infestation in the Lower Mainland. The Americans had two calls from the Norwegian referee that allowed them to tie the match at 3-3. The U.S. then scored in the final 30 seconds to break a nation’s heart. However, LeBlanc, who was on the sidelines with an ankle injury, and her Canadian teammates, rallied to defeat France 1-0 to take the bronze medal. See LeBlanc, p26

Orphaned otters learn to fish Siblings found in Maple Ridge are two weeks old by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter
A
pair of orphaned river otters from Maple Ridge are learning how to survive in the wild at a rehabilitation centre in Langley. The siblings were found two weeks ago hiding under a barbecue in the backyard of a house, their mother nowhere in sight. “She was most likely hit by a car,” said Angela Fontana, a senior animal care supervisor at the Critter Care Wildlife Society where Mo and her brother Diloo are staying. Around 15 weeks old, the otters are too young to survive in the wild on their own. The pair are now living with eight other orphaned otters, where they are picking up skills they would have learned from their mother. “They are going to start learning how to fish soon,” said Fontana. “We are going to start giving them live fish. That’s the biggest thing we have to teach them, making sure they can catch fish on their own.” The river otter, a member of the weasel family, is comfortable in water and on land. They live in burrows close to the water’s edge in river, lake, swamp or coastal ecosystems. Although fish is a favoured meal for otters, they also eat frogs and small birds. Mo and Diloo will be released in the fall since they’ve spent more time in the wild. The other otters will stay at Critter Care through winter. “We are quite confident

Critter Care Wildlife Society specializes in the treatment, care and release of sick, injured and orphaned mammals. It is also one of four bear rehab centres in the province. Besides otters, the society has cared for bears, racoons, Douglas squirrels, skunks and minks from Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. The non-profit society receives a few grants but relies on donations for its day-to-day operations, costs which can often balloon if there is a sudden influx of animals. Rehabilitating one bear cub costs $5,000. Critter Care released 16
cubs in April. “Our fundraisers are very important,” said Elaine Stirling, a volunteer at Critter Care for the past eight years, who is organizing the society’s fourth annual “walka-thon.” It’s baby season, so the centre is currently caring for 105 raccoon kits, 51 baby skunks, three fawns, three coyote pups, the otters and several other small mammals. Most of the donations raised go towards purchasing a special milk formula for baby animals, as well as medication. The society also has to buy fish for the otters. Fontana says 10 river otters eat
about 10 kilograms of fish a day. “We’ve got some people to donate salmon so we’re pretty lucky,” she added.

Cyber-bullying twitter tirade quickly squashed Account targeted local teens by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter A Twitter account that unleashed a tirade against teenage girls in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge has been wiped clean after it was brought to the attention of police and the press. Yesterday, a Twitter user with the handle @12andwhatisthis deleted the account but seems to have registered another account with the same name. In tweets viewed before the account was erased, @12and-

The thumbnail previously used by @12andwhatisthis was a photograph of a Mountie in an Integrated Road Safety Patrol car, with a pig’s head superimposed on his face. Ridge Meadows RCMP said the

tweets, though nasty, don’t constitute a threat. Police though will continue to watch the account. A spokesperson also encouraged anyone who is being bullied online to speak to police. While most interactions online are positive, new technologies have given young people new – and powerful – tools to target their peers. In 2010, photos of an alleged sexual assault at a rave in Pitt Meadows went viral and prompted a police plea to stop their distribution. In a 2008 U of T study, half the students reported being cyberbullied. Simon Fraser University communications expert Peter Chow-White thinks the Twitter user was prob-

ably scared off by the attention. “Twitter is pretty open in terms of its public dialogue,” said ChowWhite, noting that racist or offensive tweets are rather common on the micro-blog. “[The account] sounds like teenagers, it doesn’t sound like adults. It’s another case of social media giving us an insight into their world.” Although some people may think cyber bullies are not a big deal, Chow-White said words matter. The adage “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” doesn’t hold true. “Nothing could be further from the truth, is what we are learning.”
As soon as the weather warms, Leslie Elchuk keeps an eye out for tents and tarps. She’s quick to dismantle any homeless camp she spots and politely tells the occupants to move on or puts them in touch with outreach services. “It’s something you have to keep on top of,” said Pitt Meadows bylaw officer. “If you don’t, it can quickly get out of control.” Last month, Elchuk and city staff took down three camps in the span of a week. Three might seem like a lot to many city residents but Elchuk says the number of homeless people living within Pitt Meadows boundaries has stayed steady for years, fluctuating between three and five in winter, and more when the weather warms. In summer, most like to camp along the river, away from residential neighbourhoods. “As soon as I hear of a camp or a tent I go right away,” said Elchuk, who is usually alerted to camps by residents who spot them while walking on dikes or trails. Nearby Maple Ridge has a much bigger homeless problem, noted Elchuk, but also has resources to deal with it. One hundred and two people were found in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows without a roof over their heads during the 2011 Greater Vancouver Homeless Count. That’s up from 90 in 2008. Of the 102 – 40 were in emergency shelters, while one person was listed as having no fixed address. The municipalities were the only place in Metro Vancouver where the number of street homeless also rose – to 61 from 40. Elchuk is now familiar with the city’s homeless and knows several by name. Car sales rev up in July
Dave Wyant, at Maple Ridge Hyundai, is expecting business to continue to grow at the east Maple Ridge dealership. Car sales across Canada are up compared to last year, and are on pace for the best sales year since 2007.
2012 on pace to be best auto sales year since 2007, with more than 1 million sold by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter Car sales nationwide spiked last month and could be on track for the best sales year since 2007, according to a report by BMO Economics. Canadian auto and light truck sales increased 4.7 per cent this July over last. To date, more than 1 million units have been sold in 2012, a 6.7-percent increase over last year. The annual record for Canadian car sales of 1.73 million was set in 2002. “Every month this year, except April, sales have been higher than a year ago,” said Sal Guatieri, senior economist for BMO Capital Markets. “While most other areas of consumer credit have slowed, auto financing remains strong because of aggressive incentives by dealers. Steady job growth in Canada this year has also played a role.” Ryan McVeigh with Marv Jones Honda said sales have been strong as of late at the local dealership thanks to falling prices. Honda is offering its 2012 line at a lower price than its 2011 line, thanks in part to cheaper manufacturing costs. “People who might have been in the market for a used car that one or two years old are going for new one instead,” said McVeigh.
“Every year it’s getting cheaper to produce cars. A GPS navigation system would have cost $4,000 10 years ago. Today it’s $1,500, and its voice activated.” Honda has also rebounded from inventory shortages suffered last year after flooding in Thailand disrupted the car manufacturer’s supply chain, causing delays of two to three months for cars to arrive. This year, Honda introduced two new redesigned lines of cars, with the CR-V and the Civic all-new for 2012. Meanwhile, Maple Ridge Hyundai in Albion is undergoing a dramatic renovation, and plans to nearly double its staff from 28 to 40 or 50. Among car manufacturers, Toyota led the way in July with a 31 per cent increase in sales over last year, while Chrysler saw a 3.4 per cent increase. Ford saw a sales increase of 2.2 per cent. Continued low interest rates are also making it easy to finance a new vehicle. However, Guatieri said he expects Canadian auto sales to slow in the year ahead as a result of elevated household debt. Robert Sadokierski, head of dealership financing for BMO, expects auto manufacturers will continue to offer more incentives for consumers. “There is good news for prospective buyers,” he said. -with files

City hopes study will help with housing Homeless from p3 She’s linked them with services but says a few don’t want the help. “They are just down and out,” says Elchuk. “They are just in a bad place right now. I wish there was a solution.” The city hopes to get a better idea of how big its homeless population is through a study that’s currently underway. World needs Olympics
I
n a world where there is often precious little to celebrate, where citizens must die for democracy, people are gunned down in a movie theatre and countless other acts leave us saddened, disheartened or just plain cynical, every two years a spectacle takes place that breathes life back into the human spirit. The Olympic Games are a two-week celebration of youth, goodwill and ultimate effort. A glimpse, perhaps, into the lighter side, the better side, of the human condition. The Olympics are a spectacle where failure doesn’t result in civil war or poverty, but only an acknowledgement that more work is required. To lose leaves little consequence; we simply move on to the next event and hope. Vancouver Island’s Mike Mason’s high jump effort came up just short of the bronze medal. Simon Whitfield’s crash in triathlon and the women’s loss in soccer to the U.S. left us disappointed. But to win leaves us punching the air in celebration, with lumps in our throat as our national anthem plays. We see the joy and understanding in the athlete at the top of the podium, having carried an entire nation’s hopes on their shoulders and succeeded, to have so much sacrifice pay off. That is what we celebrate. And while every Olympics has its shortfalls, corporate sponsorships and huge investment in venues, the price is worth it. For two weeks, the world converges in one place without politics, religion or greed. For two weeks, we get a glimpse of a world without borders. As the 2012 London Olympics draw to a close, and as the Olympic Flame is once again set to be extinguished, we can look back and pocket the moments of inspiration, learn from the failures and embrace the human race. – Black Press Tell us what you think @ www.mapleridgenews.com

If regulated, no need for gov’t. booze VICTORIA – Here’s a summer scene being played out all over North America. Family van pulls up to the corner store to stock up on a few camping essentials: pop, chips, hot dogs, a case of beer and a bottle of vodka. Not in B.C. you say? It happens every day B.C. Views at rural agency liquor Tom Fletcher stores around B.C. As with many issues, there is one reality for urban B.C. Another for the rest of us. Selling booze in grocery stores would presumably create anarchy in our cities, but villagers and their visitors somehow manage it, just as everyone does across the line in Washington or Alaska. These rural agency stores are “flyspeck operators,” sniffs an acquaintance who spent his career as a union activist in government liquor stores. Picture dusty old bottles on a rickety shelf, greedy owners and poorly trained clerks more likely to sell to under-age drinkers. Similar generalizations can be heard about the hundreds of private liquor stores that have popped up around B.C. since they were legalized. And in fact there have been more violations in private stores, revealed in sting operations run by liquor inspectors. In the year ended March 31, 54 private stores were caught selling to a minor,
Q
uestion of the week:
for an 84-per-cent compliance rate. Only four government stores were caught, a pass rate of 96 per cent. Five rural agency stores were tested, and one flunked. But here is the telling statistic. In 2010, the government allowed liquor inspectors to employ actual minors to test these stores. Previously, they hired people who looked young but were old enough to buy alcohol, As late as 2009, two out of three stores (government or otherwise) sold to them. Problem is, that’s not an actual offence. Now, liquor inspectors send in undercover teens, and relieve them of the evidence when they are allowed to buy booze. The watchdog now has teeth, and compliance has jumped. The government glossed over the poorer performance of private stores. But in fairness, three times as many private stores as government ones were targeted in the new inspections. Government stores also have a huge built-in financial advantage in their wholesale rate, and are generally overstaffed by private-sector standards. The B.C. Liberals also moved this spring to make rural agency stores easier to establish. Regulation changes brought the minimum population served from 300 down to 200, and eliminated a vague requirement for a “bona fide community” to exist around the store. Meanwhile, the big booze story this year is cabinet minister Rich Coleman’s plan to sell B.C.’s warehouse and distribution monopoly to a private contractor.
Are you watching and/or enjoying the 2012 Summer Olympics? Yes: 43% – No: 56% (32 votes)
The B.C. Government Employees’ Union has protested, despite assurances that their jobs will continue. B.C.’s burgeoning craft-beer industry has looked to Alberta’s all-private model and predicts higher costs.
“B.C.’s burgeoning craft-beer industry … predicts higher costs .” The B.C. Liberal government has been on the defensive from the start, with the NDP pointing to the paper trail of lobbyists with an apparent inside track. It’s great politics, but it matters little to consumers in an increasingly competitive but heavily taxed business. Another new regulation took effect this summer, creating a $525 fine for adults serving minors, on the job, at home or as a bootlegger. Parents who provide booze for their own under-age children are exempted. Previously, penalties applied only to licensed establishments. If the issue really is public safety and teen binge drinking, the key job for government is to regulate sales effectively. Once that is done, no justification remains for government liquor sales. THE NEWS/letters The RCMP has issues EDITOR, THE NEWS:
I’m responding to the article in The News about the latest incident involving an RCMP officer being arrested. (The News, Aug. 3). Unlike others, I’m not going to jump on the bandwagon and criticize this officer. There are many problems within this organization and that is clearly evident. It’s just now starting to come to the surface. But what is more important, and we should be asking the question, why are so many officers getting into these situations? What are the stressors? Is it because of what they’ve experienced in their work place, i.e. the RCMP and their own heartless bureaucracies and commanding officers? I think this latest incident is just one more example of a deeper underlining problem within the force. They have actually identified this in the Task Force study, “Rebuilding the Trust” – in the year 2008. What remains to be seen is what have they done to really change this culture within the force. The real question should be, ‘What’s going on within the force, and can it be fixed?’ JOHN MCKENZIE MAPLE RIDGE

Time to give abusers jail time EDITOR, THE NEWS:
I am the proud father of Trooper the emaciated dog that was in the headlines a few years ago because of the awful abuse he was subjected to by his previous family. Trooper has become a wonderful and loving family member after rebounding from a horrific past. Recently, I read a story about a German shepherd named Captain who was grossly abused and thrown away like trash and died from his injuries. What sort of society do we live in where these cowards are allowed to beat and kill defenceless animals with impunity? Our government needs to work in conjunction with the B.C. government, SPCA and other animal welfare departments to put forth legislation that has teeth so these creeps can face real jail time that will act as a deterrent for other sick people who punish animals for their own warped enjoyment. If our government can impose a new tax in record time, why can’t it streamline legislation to hit these cowards hard and put them in general population where they will become the prey? Developing World Connections sending eight, or more, to help by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter

A group of local volunteers is off for a trip of a lifetime to lend a hand on the other side of the world. Jen Baillie, children’s services programmer for parks and leisure services, is helping to organize the three-week trip to Rwanda through the non-profit Developing World Connections, where volunteers will help construct an occupational centre and work with a primary school. Baillie said eight people have already signed on for the trip, leaving seven open spots. While the trip is open to all age groups, Baillie hopes young people take advantage of the opportunity to volunteers overseas. “Youth will expand their awareness, view the global community, see a different culture and a different way of life,” she said.

Knotweed roots can bore five metres “The root systems are massive which is where the threats to infrastructure … are”
CONGRAULATIONS!! FOR TOP SALES IN JULY
Jennifer Grenz, Invasive Species Council Knotweed from Front “Their roots can reach [five metres] deep and 20 metres across.” Grenz likens knotweed to an iceberg. “What you see is often only a fraction of the plant. The root systems are massive which is where the threats to infrastructure and septic fields are,” she said. The plant was introduced to B.C. as a landscaping shrub that provided h privacy and shade. However, the plant soon grew out of control in its new environment, Grenz said, outcompeting native vegetation and taking over ecosystems. “Maple Ridge is an ideal place for it to grow,” said Grenz. Ridge taking inventory of invader Knotweed from p11 “It’s one of the worst infested areas in the Lower Mainland.” Eradication crews from the Invasive Species Council of Metro Vancouver are working to contain the spread of Japanese knotweed along Lougheed Highway in Pitt Meadows, as well as Kanaka Creek Regional Park. Maple Ridge Coun. Cheryl Ashlie said raising awareness is the first step to stopping its spread. “I don’t think people realize how destructive it is,” she said. “Until they see the damage themselves, I don’t think they understand.” Earlier this year, an infestation of Japanese knotweed was discovered splitting concrete in the footings of the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge and infesting a section of the Highway 1 expansion project in Burnaby. Since 2007, the U.K. government spent the equivalent of $110 million to eradicate four hectatres of Japanese knotweed from the Olympic Park in London, prior to the construction of Olympic venues, according to the Royal Horticultural Society. That plant has caused so much damage to house foundations in the U.K., in some cases homes have been condemned. Banks may even refuse to offer mortgages on properties where the plant is found. Grenz cautions against trying to dig out the plants, as they will inevitably grow back. “The worst thing you

In May, eradication crews working in Kanaka Creek Regional Park found close to 70 kilograms of knotweed yard waste that had been illegally dumped in the park. “Someone likely tried to clear their property, and dumped it there,” said Grenz. Now the knotweed has spread, taking root
on properties adjacent to the park. To kill the plant, eradication crews must inject a herbicide called glyphosate, the active ingredient in Round-Up. Smaller plants require targeted spraying. Grenz said that while she understands public concerns regarding the use of herbicides and pesticides, there is no other way to effectively kill the plant. She added the targeted use of glyphosate leaves nearby plant species unharmed. While the use of Round-Up is restricted for cosmetic purposes under the District of
How to fight knotweed • Don’t mow or weed whack as it will spread the plant • If you attempt to dig it out you must dig all of it out. Roots can go five metres deep so it may not be possible. • Any biomass cannot be composted and needs to go to the dump or be burned if you are able to do that • Round-Up applied to the foliage is effective but follow up treatments will be needed over one to two years • Natural herbicides (horticultural vinegar) will not work on knotweed as it only burns the foliage. To effectively kill knotweed a systemic herbicide is needed to target the roots. • For more info, visit www.iscmv.ca
Maple Ridge’s cosmetic pesticides bylaw, because the province has identified the Japanese knotweed as an invasive noxious species, it is legal to use the herbicide to kill it. “The provincial law supersedes the local bylaw,” said David Boag, facilities manager for Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Parks and Leisure Services. Parks and leisure services are currently developing a strategy to deal with the infestation locally. Boag said the first step is to conduct an inventory of the plant to determine the extent of the infestation. “We are still in the very early stages,” Boag said. “There’s a lot of work that needs to be done.” The Alouette River Management Society has already spent $3,000 to eradicate Japanese knotweed on private land along the Alouette River over concerns it poses to fish habitat. Naturalist Greta Borick-Cunningham said the plant crowds out other species, such as salmonberry and vine maple, eliminating food sources for local faunae. “The animals and the birds won’t go anywhere near it,” she said. Knotweed roots can also cause increased soil erosion along riverbanks. More silt is washed in waterways as a result, damaging fish spawning grounds. “It’s very much a matter of containment,” said Borick-Cunningham. “Now that it’s here, we may never get rid of it completely.”

Driving while distracted can result in loss of vehicle control, accident and injury. Ford recommends that drivers use caution when using mobile phones, even with voice commands. Only use mobile phones and other devices, even with voice commands, not essential to driving when it is safe to do so. SYNC is optional on most new Ford vehicles. ◆◆Remember that even advanced technology cannot overcome the laws of physics. B.C. arts, culture grants maintained by Tom Fletcher Black Press The B.C. government has provided $16.8 million for community arts and culture grants for the current year, matching last year’s total, with help from a dwindling 2010 Olympic legacy fund. Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Ida Chong announced the funding Monday in Victoria, along with B.C. Arts Council chair Stan Hamilton. The Arts Council has juries that assess funding applications, and has already doled out about $6 million of this year’s budget. With less than half the money allocated in Chong’s current ministry budget, another $6.75 million came from the 2010 Sports and Arts Legacy. That $60 million fund was created in the 2010 budget to offset earlier recession-driven cuts to adult arts and sports organizations from provincial gambling revenues. It will be gone after this year, and there is no indication where it might be made up next year. When the recession hit in 2008, the B.C. Liberal government cut grant funding from the B.C. Lottery Corp. from $156 million to $113 million, then raised it

Cultural Development Minister Ida Chong said Monday that grants will stay the same as last year. back to $120 million to restore funds to school district parent advisory councils. Applicants were told that arts and sports funding from lotteries would be restricted to organizations for young people and the disabled. Premier Christy Clark promised to restore funds while campaigning for the party leadership last year. Once elected, she announced a $15-million increase in gambling funds for a range of organizations including community service clubs, fairs, festivals and museums. Chong said she sometimes meets artists and organizations who are not aware that they can apply to the B.C. Arts Council for grants. Eligibility requirements and
application forms are available at www. bcartscouncil.ca. The largest recipients of arts council funding include the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra ($1.2 million last year), the Vancouver Art Gallery ($630,000) and the Vancouver International Film Festival ($82,000). Chong said more than 1,000 grants are given out to 200 B.C. communities, including $1.1 million to writers, publishers and literary festivals, as well as scholarships for new writers.

Olympic year, a sense of pride, and community in watching the world’s best athletes compete for their respective countries. This year at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Canada had many victories, and losses, but the spirit of sportsmanship was always apparent. That spirit, the sense of camaraderie among athletes and peers is what the modern Olympics are all about. That tradition is what drew one of Maple Ridge’s most extraordinary citizens to the 1972 Games in Munich. Marge Saunders was always a bit of an adventure seeker. In 1937, she became a local hero when she rode her one-speed bicycle to Vancouver and entered a race around Stanley Park, which she won, and then rode back to Maple Ridge that same day. Her cycling trips were just the start of her athletic adventures. She would travel all over B.C. on her motorcycle, being her own mechanic the entire trip.

By 1942, she won a Dominion Marksman Expert Shield with a score of 5,933 out of 6,000 in competition. She was only the third woman in Canada to win that award and the second in B.C. In 1942, she joined the RCAF and spent the remainder of the war as a wireless operator in Prince Rupert and other West Coast locations. After the war, Saunders returned to Maple Ridge and became involved in the sport which would lead the remainder of her life: archery. She helped to create the Maple Ridge Archery Club, and held a connection, coaching,

until the age of 92. Archery first debuted at the Olympics in 1900. Between its debut and 1920, it was contested four times, not appearing again until 1972. Since the 1992 Summer Olympics, headto-head matches have been the method used for competition. Saunders was part of the Canadian team at the 1972 Summer Olympics. At 59, she was the oldest participant, yet achieved a personal best score and qualified for a FITA star, of which only 15 were given in Canada at the time. “Wanted – young male, single and free. Experience in love preferred, but will accept a young trainee.” This is a line from a song released in 1971 about a woman who is looking for a new love in the Want Ads. True, I did change “man” to “male” but you get the idea. She is specific about what she is looking for in her new love, and it is also something I hear from people all the time when they are looking for a pet. Many people have the notion that they need a young animal to bond with, preferably a baby. They think that it has to be a boy (or a girl) and the animal must already be loving to fit in their home. Every week at our shelter’s open house, I see this idea challenged and proven untrue. Each year, we see hundreds of cats come into Katie’s Place Shelter, and each year we see hundreds find loving homes, and not
Contributed
Jazzy needs a home. just the “young and single.” If you choose to take home a “free kitten/puppy” from somewhere in your neighbourhood or from a friend or relative, remember there are still costs involved. Many areas, Maple Ridge included, have bylaws stating all animals over six months must be spayed/ neutered and identified. The identification can be a tagged collar, which may get lost, or a tattoo or microchip which you can get at your vet’s office. It’s also a good idea that you take
your new friend to a vet within the first month of bringing it home to check for any health conditions, and have them get their first vaccinations. No doubt, these animals deserve a loving home, but all things considered they are not so “free.” Then there is the option of adopting an animal from a recognized shelter. Yes, there is a fee involved. Yes, the animals are all ages, including just plain old. But when shelter animals are adopted out, they will be spayed/neutered, tattooed/microchipped and have had their first vaccinations. Yes, some of them have health problems that will require attention at some point, but then don’t we all! Some are loving from the word go, others need a little more time to warm up to you, and still others will never be like that snuggly kitten on the bathroom tissue commercial. Barbara Paulic is a volunteer at Katie’s Place.

Transit cops will tip off fare evaders Hopes it will result in greater awareness Transit Police will start giving advance warning of where they will set up enforcement blitzes to nab transit fare cheaters. Spokesperson Anne Drennan said public notice of fare checks through the media, on the web and via Twitter will begin in September as TransLink intensifies its efforts to combat fare cheating and make those who are
caught pay their fines. “We think if we advise people where we’re going to be doing our fare checks they will realize we are out there in force and they have to buy their fare tickets or they’ll be getting violation tickets,” she said. She said it’s a similar tactic to police telling the public locations of speed traps – while it may help violators dodge a ticket the greater publicity increases awareness, hopefully improving compliance.
Drennan also noted the publicized blitzes aren’t the only spots fare cheats could be caught. “Just because certain people might avoid the places where we’re particularly ramping up our enforcement doesn’t mean they won’t be checked at other locations.” New provincial legislation also takes effect in September giving TransLink wider powers to go after violators, most of whom did not pay their $173 fines.

Projects chosen will “help create sustainable places to live, [invest] for positive change in the community, and focus on educating people on how to build their financial knowledge.”

THE NEWS/arts&life Art for a cause Breastfest raising money for Ridge Meadows Hospital by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter

ulia Bartel’s mesh tent is a realm free of technology. To enter it, you’ll need to obey a sign: “Please turn off all electronic devices/vices.” “When people are on their cell phones or computers, they are less engaged in life in general,” says Bartel, 22. That’s why when people enter her art tent at Breastfest on the weekend, she wants them to be all tuned in. Bartel, who is studying visual arts at the University of the Fraser Valley, will be showing her work at Breastfest for the first time this year. She plans to donate the proceeds from any sales to the fundraiser, although she isn’t sure she’s quite ready to part with the pieces. Creation 2010, a wood sculpture, depicts two cells coming together. “The beginning of life,” she explains. A mask of an owl made of wood and leather will also be for sale. Titled Nocturnal Mind, the owl symbolizes Bartel’s struggle with insomnia. “I feel like the animals that stay

up at night and sleep during the day,” she says, with a laugh. The third piece she’s bringing to Breastfest is one that’s generated a little controversy at school. ‘The Difference Between Us’ is a two-piece installation. The first is a ball-shaped wood sculpture embellished with moss, that represents the earth - it suspended in space and natural. The second piece is a New Testament bible, enclosed in a see-through box. The earth represent my free spirit, says Bartel, while the bible symbolizes her Christian upbringing, “attending church, closed in with a lid.”
“We wanted to bring it a little closer to home.” Chad Williams, organizer, Breastfest Colleen Flanagan/THE NEWS
Julia Bartel holds her sculpture titled “The Difference Between Us.” Bartel will be selling her work at Breastfest.
It’s an piece that perfectly illustrates Bartel’s reason for pursuing art. “I like how art gives people a different perspective and engages,” she says. Breastfest started five years ago to raise funds for breast can-
cer research. “We chose Breastfest because it’s bold and something people will remember,” says Chad Williams, president of the non-profit group United Circle of Arts, which hosts the free festival. To date, the event has almost $7,000. This year, donations are
no longer going to the Canadian Cancer Society but will be funneled to Ridge Meadows Hospital to buy cancer prevention and coping equipment. “It’s the first year we’ve made this change. We wanted to bring it a little closer to home,” said Williams.
•
Breastfest takes place 3p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday Aug. 18 at Memorial Peace Park in Maple Ridge. Centrefold, The Bone Daddies, Whisky Jack, Crystal Swells, Ruskin, SolidRed and The Mortimers are playing the event. There will also be a car show, kids zone, art sale, food and raffles.

A dancer and a singer from Maple Ridge will be vying for the top prize at the PNE Star Showdown this weekend. Erika Bernard is competing in the kids division, while Matt Kennedy will battle nine other contestants in the adult division. Both seasoned performers, Bernard and Kennedy have qualified for the Star Showdown before. The province-wide talent show search will showcase performers from many different fields, including comedians, musicians, singers and dancers. Local pipers win with bands at world championships Four members from Maple Ridge The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band has shown it is still one of the top pipe bands in the world, by placing third at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland on the weekend. The junior bands also
shone, with its Grade 3 Robert Malcolm Memorial band taking first place in the Gr. 3A category and its young Grade 4 band also placing third. The Grade 4 band features three Maple Ridge members - piper Russell Pengelly as well as sibling Cameron and Sarah Ickert. The Ickert siblings hail from a Scot-
tish family. Cameron is the youngest member of the Grade 4 band and hopes to be a famous piper one day, following in the footsteps of his grandfather’s cousin. His sister Sarah is a drummer in the band. Maple Ridge piper Kevin McLean is a member of the elite band, which had hoped to win its seventh cham-
pionship. “This is the best we’ve played all year,” says Pipe Sergeant Jack Lee after placing third. He called the band’s sound as tight and polished as it has ever been. “We’re disappointed, we thought we played well, particularly in the medley and were hoping for better. But we’re still happy to maintain

Band members jumped and shouted as they paraded their trophy around the field on Glasgow Green. “This is the best, it’s just the best,” shouted Gr. 3 piper Brian Haddon, while several members cried, and later broke out singing We Are The Champions. The Grade 4s also celebrated pulling off a surprise third, happy to have just made the qualifying round.

Royals walk off with title Ridge Meadows upend Newton for provincial win contributed
Colleen Flanagan/THE NEWS
Are you ready for some football? Brendan Atkinson of the Ridge Meadows Knights steps over a member of the Nanaimo Redmen during a midget game in the Knights at the Round Table Tournament at the Albion Sportsfields on Sunday. The tournament, which started in 1992, hosted 800 players over the weekend from across the province. Football season starts on Labour Day weekend. The Knights first home game will be the following weekend at Samuel Robertson Technical secondary.
Silver lining for Team B.C. at lacrosse nationals Pee wee, bantam, and midget teams all fall to Ontario in gold medal games contributed
For anyone who follows lacrosse, it’s always tough to win in someone else’s barn. Even tougher is winning when that barn is more than 4,000 kilometres to the east. The pee wee, bantam, and midget Team B.C. squads made the trip to Whitby, Ontario for the Canadian National Box Lacrosse Championships Saturday in hopes of upend-
ing the home province. However, the road to gold came up short for each team as all three squads lost to the hosts in the finals. The pee wee squad, which featured Ridge Meadows Burrards players Dylan McCormick and Aidan Murphy scratched and clawed their way to the finals before dropping a 5-1 decision to Team Ontario. The pee wee squad went 6-2 in round-robin play, including beating Team Quebec 20-0 and Team Newfoundland 23-0. In the semi-finals, Team B.C. avenged an earlier 6-3 defeat at the hands of Team Alberta, this time coming out on top 7-3. Team B.C. also lost to Team Ontario 5-2 in round-robin play.
• In bantam play, Team B.C. dropped a hard-fought 8-4 decision to Team Ontario in the gold medal game. Mackenzie Rope of the Ridge Meadows Burrards was part of the Team B.C. squad. Team B.C. went 4-2 in round-robin play, winning their first four games. However, the provincial squad dropped two straight games to host Iroquois, 4-3, and Team Ontario 5-1.. Team B.C. entered the playoffs in third and found themselves in a rematch with Iroquois . The back and forth affair went in favour of Team B.C. as they eked out a 5-4 win to reach the finals. Team B.C. had only given up 26 goals in seven games heading into the fi-
nals, but couldn’t stop the wave of Ontario success in the finals. •Team B.C.’s midget squad were the third straight provincial team to fall to Team Ontario in the finals, losing 9-5. Burrards’ Brody Glemnitz, Andrew Gresham, Mitchell McDole and Jacob Tiefisher also played for the Team B.C. midget squad, which went 6-1 in round-robin play. Team B.C. scored 77 goals in round-robin play while giving up 38. Team B.C. finished second in the preliminary round and subsequently dropped Team Alberta 13-5 in the semi-finals. However, the road team ran out of gas in the final, claiming the province’s third straight silver.
The Maple Ridge Royals used some lategame heroics to win their first-ever Junior Men’s Provincial baseball title on Sunday. The Royals stunned the three-time defending provincial champion Newton Nationals with a 2-1 win in New Westminster thanks to a little patience at the plate. After a scoring threat in the bottom of the 7th inning was snuffed out by a controversial call the Royals looked lost at the plate as the team was down to its final four outs before starting the rally. Trailing 1-0 and with two out in the bottom of the 8th inning, the Royals changed the tide with singles from Cole Ross and Ian Rennie. After a pitching change, things went from bad to worse for the Nationals as Dan Rennie, Erik Herbranson, and Justin Armstrong all walked, leading to the only runs that Royals would need. Kevan Speth recorded the win after reliving starter Andreas Irion, who pitched five strong innings, only to leave trailing 1-0 after the 5th. Irion was named player of the game for his strong start.. The Royals went into the playoffs finishing in first place with a record of 11 wins and just two losses. The team lead the league in runs scored with 102 while finishing in second in runs allowed with 42. The reigning champion Nationals gave up a meager 25 runs during the regular season. However, it was their pitching that ultimately cost them. The Royals punched their ticket to the finals by topping the Cloverdale Rays 6-1 in the semi-finals. This was the Royals third trip to the finals.

The Maple Ridge goalie said the 2012 Canadian Olympic squad felt like destiny was on its side. While initially devastated by the defeat, she said she and her teammates had their spirits lifted by the overwhelming support from across the country. Inundated with emails and tweets of support, the team was brought back into focus only hours after losing, she said. While outplayed for long stretches of the game, it was Canada’s turn to shine late in the match. A late goal by Diana Matheson in extra time propelled the Canucks to victory. “To win the game the way we did was incredible. I was in tears. “I don’t even remember the details, all I remember is the being on the field just crying my eyes out. They are the happiest tears I have ever cried. I was just
so proud to be Canadian,” said LeBlanc, who noted that she always dreamed of playing at Old Trafford Stadium, the home of Manchester United. “It’s a cliche, but you have to go through the extreme low to get to that high.” Perhaps the only other person as proud as Karina at that moment was her mom Winsome and her father Van. The proud parents were at the Olympics watching the tournament but came home before the bronze medal match. Winsome said she wanted to be home to greet her daughter at the airport, no matter how they fared. “We were so, so proud of Karina. She has given so much over the past 15 years and to see her achieve her dream was amazing,” said Winsome. With more than 100 national games played for team Canada, Leblanc said it’s too early

The 2015 World Cup will be played on Canadian soil. LeBlanc admits it’s enticing to compete in front of the home crowd. “It’s up to my body. I love the sport and I love representing my country. You’d be a fool not to enjoy every moment of that but right now it’s up to my body,” she said. For now, she is going to enjoy the moment. Part of that has been the
handshakes, hugs and photo-ops she’s sharing with fellow Canadians. Leblanc said she has to keep asking herself the same question over and over. “Is this real life?” As she looks down to readjust the bronze medal around her neck, she grins with an infectious smile, answering her own question. Gracious in victory, Leblanc said she’s so thankful for the support she’s received from her hometown.

Shin and Kwon finish in tie for 14th USED MUSTANG Sports
Pitt Meadows golfers at Canadian Amateurs contributed Two Pitt Meadows golfers ended up tied for 14th at the 108th Canadian Men’s Amateur Championships at the Camelot Golf and Country Club in Cumberland, Ontario. Justin Shin and Kevin Kwon finished the tournament at 3-under par for the 72-hole event, nine strokes back of tournament winner Mackenzie Hughes. The Dundas, Ont. native entered the
final round with a one-stroke lead over Kitchener’s Chris Hemmerich and both players plodded their way to an evenpar 72 final round. Brian Churchhill-Smith made the biggest push in the final round, carding a 4-under 68 to finish at 11-under, tying Hemmerich for second place. With the win, Hughes earns a spot at next year’s Canadian Open at Glen Abbey, as well as an invitation to the U.S. National Amateur being played this week at Cherry Hills Country Club, in Colorado. It was a tournament of whatif’s for Kwon, as the Pitt Mead-
ow’s product was sitting at 8-under par as he approached the 16th hole in his third round. However, a string of three straight bogeys dropped Kwon to 5-under and into a six-way tie for sixth place heading into the final round. A two-over 74 on Sunday dropped Kwon into 14th. For Shin, the tournament was more about consistency, as the Swan-E-Set golfer sat at evenpar heading into the third round. Shin had his best round on day three, firing a 3-under 69. Shin finished the tournament with a solid round of even-par 72 to tie Kwon for 14th overall.

After a long and courageous battle with kidney disease Rueben Heinrich was called into the presence of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, there to be reunited with his beloved wife Emily. Rueben is survived by his sister Mae Haworth (Dick), sister-in-law Freda Shuya, daughter Beverly and sons Lyle (Colleen), Neil (Trudean), Terry (Jan) and Mark (Lori). Rueben also leaves nine grandchildren, Theresa (Colin), Lance (Jessika), Brittany (Corey), Spencer, Aaron, Calen, Tierney, Sholana (Pat) and Emmary, as well as great grandsons Nolan and Hudson. Rueben was predeceased by Emily Heinrich, his beloved wife of 56 years and his adored first great grandchild Jessica Faith. Rueben grew up and was married in Medicine Hat Alberta. In 1968 he moved his young family to Maple Ridge, continuing to dedicate his life to faith, family, friends and community.
