World sand event eyes Parksville Parksville’s sand sculpting event too good to move, however
BRENDA GOUGH News Contributor
If the director of the World Championship of Sand Sculpting has his way, Parksville could play host to the worlds in the not too distant future. That plan, however, could mean significantly changing the city’s successful event, and the local event manager, Trish Smith, said that’s not likely to happen any time soon. Charlie Beaulieu, who began sand sculpting 29 years ago on the beaches in Northwest Washington State, was in Parksville to help kick off this year’s Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting competition and exhibition. The Parksville competition, which took place July 14 and 15, is an official qualifying event for the World Championship of NEWS PHOTO Sand Sculpting, scheduled to take place in Fort Myers Beach, FlorParksville could see the world’s ida in November. Beaulieu told top sand sculptors here. THE NEWS this weekend, however, that there are some hick-ups with that venue. Back on July 13 at a welcoming party for the sculptors and sponsors, Beaulieu stated Parksville had the potential to host the worlds and given that the worlds were born in Canada he would love to see them return to this country. Parksville city council will ask the provincial government not to privatize the Liquor Distribution Branch distribution system. In response to a letter from Darryl Walker president of the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union (BCGEU) which represents LDB employees, council went with
the staff recommendation to endorse a resolution to the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities in support a moratorium on privatizing. “I see this as a real detriment to our tourism industry,” said councillor Carrie PowellDavidson, who added that the industry has been hit with a lot of new regulation and hard times in recent years.

“Parksville hosts a premiere event. It is run well and there is great community support and there’s a possibility the worlds could be brought here,” he admitted. On August 11, he said organizers are still trying to iron things out with their sponsors in Florida and he, along with his business partner Suzanne Altamare, is becoming increasingly frustrated with them to the point that they may abandon that venue altogether. He said the sponsors are attempting to change the way the event is run and he isn’t about to sacrifice the good reputation associated with the World Championship of Sand Sculpting. “The name represents all sculptors of the world and I have worked hard to make sure the sculptors are represented proper-
ly. Months before the event they (the sponsors) are trying to be greedy and I don’t want anything to do with that,” he confessed. He said if they drop the Florida event it will be up for grabs and Parksville could potentially take it on. “Anything is possible. I’m not ruling anything out but we have to look at all the offers on the table,” he stated. Beaulieu said he would need to get a proposal from Trish Smith the event manager for the Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and pointed to the one obstacle that could get in the way. “The biggest hold back is the size of the space … it is not large enough.” He said the area where beach volleyball takes place has

enough room and that space would need to be secured for a world competition to be held at Parksville beach. “I’d love to bring it back to Canada. It started in White Rock and Parksville is one of the top notch competitions around.”

He said they have a list of criteria that needs to be met before a venue is chosen for the worlds and on that list is how well the sculptors are treated and Beaulieu said Parksville ranks right up there. He said as far as location goes Parksville has a leg up on the other contenders. “Parksville is God’s country. It would be a beautiful spot for the worlds,” Beaulieu stated. Smith, however, said Monday Beaulieu only mentioned such a possibility to her a few months ago and it hasn’t come up formally since. She told THE NEWS to change Parksville’s current event could mean the loss of significant community support. As it stands today, she said the event garners a lot of business and city support, as it draws a lot of people to the downtown area. “We are in our current location because we can’t move to the larger volleyball court,” Smith explained, noting the organizers of other
events have done a lot to accommodate the sand sculpting exhibition. “It would upset a lot of people,” she added. As well, the local event needs the summer months and the extended exhibition time to be able to pay for the event. Should the worlds maintain its November date, Smith said Parksville probably wouldn’t be the best site, considering the winter weather. Smith didn’t rule out hosting the world event, however, but noted that it would have to change significantly and the local Beach Festival board would have to discuss it in depth, as playing host has plenty of ramifications. Beaulieu has sculpted all over the globe working for many prestigious clients and celebrities. He is known for his innovative and creative ideas and his high standards. He said another challenge the world of sand sculpting faces is the dwindling number of master sculptors. “The masters are getting older and there is not a lot of young talent coming in.” Beaulieu will be competing this weekend Stateside at The Tournament of Champions at the Commons Mall parking lot in Federal Way, Washington. He said the winners of the Parksville event who qualified for the worlds in Florida need not worry about that event not happening. “In the worst case scenario the winner will just roll over to the next year’s event.”

ven the ducks were hot at the 99th annual Coombs Fair over the weekend. Under the hot sun families enjoyed a number of kids activities like the merrygo-round, bouncy slide and the kids corral, with colouring and other activities. Farm animals like sheep, goat and cows were spread out around the grounds and many waterfowl and chicks were offered to the pubic for petting by 4H members and volunteers. People took time to walk through the barns and learn about the animals from young 4H members and enjoy perusing the fruits of the community’s labour like the jams, pies, quilts, woodwork and paintings entered into the fair. The horse shows drew crowds and Bobby “The Wizard Cole was a hit, making balloon animals for the young kids whilst walking on stilts. Organizer Janet Boley said Monday that the fair saw more than 8,000 people on the grounds throughout the weekend. “It was a good weekend, and it was hot, she said. Already, Boley and other fair organizers are going over the books and getting an early start on the 100th Coombs Fair in 2013.

Seafood can often be a shell game BCCDC cautions shellďŹ sh eaters to properly cook their meals; watch for outbreaks AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
Along with the season’s beach weather, the BC Centre for Disease Control reminds the public there’s a risk of illness from raw or undercooked bivalve shellďŹ sh like oysters, clams, mussels, scallops and cockles. “We see more illnesses during the summer months and we see it mostly in people who live along the coastal waters,â€? said CDC epidemiologist Marsha Taylor. ShellďŹ sh can accumulate bacteria (vibrio parahaemolyticus), viruses (norovirus, hepatitis A), toxins (paralytic or diarrhetic shellďŹ sh poisoning) and other impurities from the water. Thorough cooking destroys bacteria and viruses, but does not destroy toxins. “There’s an increase in vibrio parahaemolyticus as the water warms,â€? Taylor said, pointing out the other risks can be present throughout the year, but there is less self-harvesting so the overall danger is lower. There were 42 cases of vibrio reported in B.C. last year and over ďŹ ve so far this year. Illnesses have been linked to raw shellďŹ sh served in restaurants, bought retail, or self-harvested across Van-
couver Island and the Sunshine Coast including Qualicum Beach and Parksville, Taylor said, but she didn’t have further details on the local illnesses. The effects run from discomfort to diarrhoea bad enough to keep people home for a week, she said. If they can track an illness to a speciďŹ c store or restaurant, they will issue an advisory she said. Along with the individual cases there are occasional outbreaks, like a 2010 norovirus outbreak from raw oysters that affected over 30 people. In 2011 more than 60 people became ill after consuming cooked mussels contaminated with diarrhetic shellďŹ sh poisoning. “The safest thing is for people to only eat cooked shellďŹ sh from approved sources,â€? Taylor said, explaining that restaurants and retailers must be federally approved and able to provide a shellďŹ sh shipper’s tag. People can harvest their own shellďŹ sh but should be up on the latest local details available from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) at 1-866-4313474 or on their website — easiest to Google “DFO shellďŹ sh.â€?
Most of District 69 corresponds to Department of Fisheries and Ocean’s area 14, but it is also divided into sub-areas for harvesting openings or advisories.
Safety tips to reduce the risk of shellďŹ sh-related illness: s ONLY BUY SHELLlSH FROM APPROVED SOURCES s CONSUME ONLY COOKED SHELLlSH s DO NOT CROSS CONTAMINATE WHEN HANDLING RAW AND cooked seafood s OBEY POSTED WARNINGS AND BANS WHEN SELF HARVESTING Call DFO at 1-866-431-3474 to check if an area is open. When preparing at home cook oysters to an internal temperature of 90°C (195°F) and be extra careful about cross-contamination with other food. Store raw and cooked seafood separately, cleaning and sanitizing knives and cutting boards and working with clean hands. Anyone becoming ill after eating shellďŹ sh should

CITY OF PARKSVILLE
Small lot residential proposal goes to public AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
A small lot development proposal at the corner of Despard Avenue and CorďŹ eld Street in Parksville has been sent forward to a public hearing. At a previous committee of the whole meeting, Nigel Gray described the 25 single family unit proposal on behalf of Rushan Development Corporation. It would have small 330-420 sq.m. (3,5504,520 sq.ft.) lots, that would be ground oriented, fee simple detached houses with a yard or garden space. Gray sug-
gested the small lots ďŹ t in with the city’s stated goal of densiďŹ cation and would allow the houses to be built incrementally, including renovations to increase their size later. Because there is an identiďŹ ed eagle perch tree on the property, 21 per cent of the land would be set aside as park and the developer would contribute to a fund for trails that would not be built until the eagles leave. The development, on three forested lots totalling 1.7 hectares (4.2 acres) require an ofďŹ cial community plan (OCP)
amendment from multifamily residential to residential and the creation of a new “small lot residentialâ€? zone. The new zone would allow single family dwellings on lots over 300 sq.m, with the inclusion of a secondary suite or accessory carriage house on properties over 560 sq.m. With councillor Bill Neufeld absent at their Aug. 8 meeting, the rest of council unanimously passed ďŹ rst and second reading and sent it forward a public hearing at the start of an upcoming regular council meeting.

CITY OF PARKSVILLE
Stanford Ave. project moves on to a hearing AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
The proposal for a mixed used commercial/residential development at Stanford Avenue and Highway 19A in Parksville has been forwarded on to a public hearing. The proposed development on two properties totalling 0.8 hectares (2 acres) would include three commercial buildings of one and two stories and a four story residential building with 27 units, commercial on the ground oor and underground parking. The two properties
have to be rezoned and require an ofďŹ cial community plan (OCP) amendment to commercial/multi-residential. At previous meetings several councillors said they loved the proposal but it is in the wrong location, being more suitable for closer to downtown. Project architect Raymond de Beeld previously described it as a “mixed urban village,â€? different from standard strip malls with more of the shops focused into an inner parking area instead of along the street. Councillor Sue Powell had a
number of questions, including the buffer space to the agricultural land reserve (ALR) property across the street and the inclusion of what the proposal calls “affordable housing.â€? Director of community planning Blaine Russell explained that Stanford Avenue provides the required 15 metres between the four-story residential building and the ALR property. He also explained that the proposed residences would not ďŹ t within the city’s formal deďŹ nition of affordable housing, but is planned as rental apartments,
which would be more affordable than condos. With mayor Chris Burger and councillor Marc Lefebvre recusing themselves and coun. Bill Neufeld absent, the rest of council unanimously passed ďŹ rst and second reading and sent the proposal on to a public hearing at the start of an upcoming regular council meeting. Both Burger and Lefebvre later explained that they have relationships with property owner Bruce Alexander, who also owns Parksville Chrysler. Burger, a former employee,
said he wanted to ensure the process is not only fair, but appears fair, pointing out conict is as much about appearance as anything and he didn’t want people to doubt the process. Lefebvre similarly said he has been buying cars from Alexander for 12 years and Alexander supported Lefebvre’s last political campaign, including keeping brochures around the dealership. While he said he could still make a fair decision, he wanted to avoid the perception of conict and err on the side of caution.

Nanoose Bay man struck by alleged intoxicated driver NANOOSE BAY — Quick action by concerned residents is being credited with the apprehension of an impaired driving suspect who struck a man on Northwest Bay Road Thursday. Oceanside RCMP Corporal Jesse Foreman said the incident took place just after 10:30 a.m. on August 9 when a 64-year-old Nanoose Bay woman was driving to Nanaimo. He said the woman swerved after taking a corner past Powder Point Road and
left the roadway just as a 62-year-old Nanoose Bay man was walking on the side of the road. The man jumped to avoid the car but was hit by the woman’s side view mirror, hurting his wrist. Foreman said the driver continued on her way as if nothing had happened. Several witnesses called 911 to report the erratic driving behaviour however, allowing ofďŹ cers from the Oceanside and Nanaimo RCMP as well as the RCMP’s Central Vancouver Island TrafďŹ c Ser-

vices to intercept and stop the motorist on Millstream bridge and Highway 19 in Nanaimo before any further damage occurred. The woman provided breath sample, which Foreman said showed she was highly intoxicated. Her vehicle was impounded and she received an immediate 90-day driving suspension. The investigation is ongoing and therefore, no name will be released.
“Impaired motorists are always a great concern. However, an impaired motorist on the roads in the morning ads a further element of danger as streets are crowded with pedestrians and motorists, Foreman said. “Thank goodness nobody else was seriously injured. Thank you to the pedestrians and motorists who witnessed the event and then called 911 without hesitation. — News staff

CITY OF PARKSVILLE
BIGGER THAN ITS BITE
City changes staff structure City of Parksville formally shifts its engineering and operations positions after struggles AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
With the elimination of the position of director of engineering and operations, Parksville city council amended their officers bylaw and appointed two incumbents as new directors. After several years of struggling to fill and keep the combined director position filled, the structure was shifted after the departure of Robert Harary in June. Manager of operations Alan Metcalf, who has been with the city since 2004, was appointed director of operations. Vaughn Figueira, hired as manager of engineering in Dec. 2010 was appointed director of engineering. Both men were appointed as officers of the corporation at Wednesday’s regular council meeting.

Parksville moves to restrict some parking AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
Rather than implementing a “resident only parking” decal and enforcement program for a handful of streets, Parksville council will remove the existing signs and use more targeted, restrictive parking signage. The issue was addressed at council’s May 23, 2012 “town hall style” meeting at Ballenas Secondary School, where some local residents spoke, mostly from Ger-

ald Place and Jenkins Place across from Ballenas Secondary School where the problem of students parking on residential streets led to the first “Resident only” signs. The general tone of those who spoke was that the school has helped and it’s not a big problem anymore. There are currently sections of eight city streets with “resident parking only” signs, but there is no decal system to identify resident
vehicles so the signs are unenforceable. A staff report points out that they do get complaints from some of the other areas with those signs, specifically around Springwood school and park. The report looked at the options of continuing with the status quo, to implement a decal program, which would be the most expensive, or to remove the signs and essentially start again. This would include the
implementation of “parking restrictive signage,” like no parking at certain times of day, which would be enforceable by the existing bylaw staff. These will apply to residents as well, but the report says “all current residents have parking alternatives,” ie. driveways. The residents of the streets in question will be petitioned with majority agreement required for new restrictive signs.

National Relaxation Day – Time to Chill
City Services
Although not widely celebrated, National Relaxation Day is being recognized tomorrow on the shores of Parksville Beach as a way to promote the Parksville-Qualicum Beach region. Oceanside Tourism Association is promoting our area as Canada’s relaxation destination; as the place to de-stress. In the promotion, good sports, Qualicum Beach Mayor Westbroek and Parksville Mayor Burger, suggest these top five ways to chill: • Just sit… and that’s it. Point yourself towards a multi-coloured sunset over the mountains or ocean, breathe deeply, watch and relax. Simple. • The ocean’s your bubble bath. Who needs suds indoors? Splash around in the big bathtub of Parksville-Qualicum with some of the warmest water this side of Mexico. • Beach Yoga with a twist. Follow these simple steps: lift a drink of choice to mouth; stretch out toes in sand; lift arms to sun; turn head to ask server for a refill. Repeat. Parksville and Qualicum Beach never felt so good. • Too Wired? There’s an app for that. Under the giant cedars of Cathedral Grove, download an app like Pzizz Energizer and wake up feeling energized after a quick, blissful power nap. • Bust a Move. In the shadow of Mount Arrowsmith (no, not named after the rock band) grab your iPod, put on your favourite beach t-shirt (the one your spouse thought he or she threw out) and let loose! So, on August 15, kick back and relax, it could be habit forming. For info on National Relaxation Day visit visitparksvillequalicumbeach.com.

Summer in Parksville means all hands on deck for the City’s parks department. Summer students are doing a stellar job keeping the Community Park polished for our many summer events and festivals. With such popular events as Beach Festival, Oceanside Overdrive Car Show and Kid Fest, as well as beach volleyball with about 400 participants, the park is the place to be over the summer. Seasonal and full-time crews are busy planting, watering, fertilizing, mowing, weeding, cleaning washrooms, picking up litter and all those other tasks it takes to keep our City looking its best. Meet Ethan Halvorson, David Ross, Annie Syrotuck, James Karras and Derek Mintz.

Take a chill pill
T
omorrow is Relaxation Day in Parksville and Qualicum Beach — not quite a holiday, but a theme borrowed from our neighbours to the south. Yes, it’s also something that the Oceanside Tourism Association has adopted for the mid-Island as another way of attracting tourists to the area. And why not? This part of Vancouver Island has long been the destination for folks from the south part of the Island to the mainland to come when they are in search of doing ... well ... next to nothing. There are beaches in both Parksville and Qualicum Beach on which to relax, catch some rays and enjoy the water. There are plenty of spas here at which visitors and locals can indulge — and splurge. Resorts, too, offer summer camps for the kids, so that parents can sit back and take time to remember what those early, heady days of courtship were like (if they remember them). If doing absolutely nothing is just something that visitors cannot stand, there’s a relaxing game of golf at one of the many courses and mini golf clubs. There’s also hiking trails, water sports, sand castle building, butterflies to see, gardens to admire, local restaurants to enjoy, art to take in and more — much more. So, if your idea of relaxation is to have fun, this area is just the ticket — and it’s close to home. For locals, it’s really close to home. Sometimes, being a tourist in your own backyard can open your eyes to people, places and activities that you may not have realized were here. Taking in these sights as a resident also helps the overall tourism experience, because once people know what the region has to offer, they tend to spread the word. So, on Wed., August 15, take a chill pill and mosey on down to the beach, or into an art gallery or a spa — enjoy the moment whenever you can, and, most of all, relax. It’s what we’re known for, so doing next to nothing — and loving it — should be second nature.

QUOTABLE:
Letters BROOM A DISASTER I had to read the letter by Peter Simeonoff (THE NEWS, Aug.3) twice to realize that he was trying to be funny! It’s not possible for any sighted individual to drive to the recycling depot and look up toward Exit 51 and not see how exceptionally invasive broom is to any other plant – nothing else now grows there. Three or four years ago there were some pretty wildflowers along the highway at that point. Broom does grow in the forest — Kit Miller, of Jim’s Gym, organized a group of members to cut the prolific growth of broom among the trees across from the gym. I was only able to spend an hour there but about 30 members spent several hours lopping and piling broom. Broom costs New Zealand’s economy about $1 billion per year because of land use lost to broom, Oregon spends about $100 million trying to save their logging industry, Croatia is a disaster according to two of our Parksville doctors who visited about two years ago. The list goes on — type in Scotch broom on the Internet and spend an hour or so reading about the damage caused by broom worldwide. Persistance is the way to deal with broom. This is the fifth year that I have been lopping broom on Price Road, Fair Road, Despard from Corfield to the Alberni Highway and there were very few, and small, broom plants this year.

Most of the neighbors have been helping and supportive and, I’m sure, will continue now that we’ve seen the results. I have also cut on Errington Road and Grafton to help the Broombusters in their work to try to control broom. I think that Broombusters, and particularly Joanne Sales, should get an award for her work in co-ordinating and encouraging people to do their part. As a volunteer coach I realize how much time and effort is required, as a volunteer, to do this work. ED FERGUSSON Errington
THANK YOU JOANNE I would like to thank Joanne Sales and her Broombusters for all their work in helping get the broom cleared up in Qualicum Beach. They did a wonderful job, and it is much appreciated by those suffering from allergies. Thank you. JANET DOL Qualicum Beach
TOM IS PREDICTABLE
The great utility of having a columnist like Tom Fletcher is you don’t have to read him to know what his opinion is going to be on any significant subject. Tueday’s column tricked me. The headline, “Poll finds open minds on oil pipeline,” led me to think it was a news story so I read the first part before I was moved to note the
by-line. Every other journalist I heard from noted the near total lack of public support for the Enbridge tar sands pipeline; Fletcher takes a contrarian point of view. Actually, the real headline is at the end of his second para: “Only seven percent indicated unqualified support for the line.” I guess I’ll just have to continue to fight against this outrageous exploitation of nonrenewable resources and hope British Columbians don’t succumb to the premier’s siren song about collecting revenue from the gamble that we will earn enough money out of the venture to pay for the inevitable environmental disaster. Is there enough money in the world to do that? JOHN OLSEN Errington
BUSINESS BOOSTED I’d really like to say thank you very much to Neil Horner for doing an article on my business, Nanoose Bay Succulents, in the Tuesday issue (THE NEWS, August 7). Today I was at the Qualicum Beach Farmers Market and had a huge response from that article, with lots of comments about the article and all very positive. Thank you so much. Getting started in business is difficult and awareness of your product or service is key to success. Thank you again. MARY SANH Nanoose Bay

It appears that another chapter in the book of stupidity is about to open. Mainstream and other open pen salmon farms in the waiting line, appear to be preparing to put their hand out to gather up insurance dollars and — wait for it — government dollars to compensate for their loss due to IHN. All the affected companies knew of the dangers of open pen salmon farming due to IHN from wild stock and maybe have insurance to offset this loss. All well and good if some company will insure this liability. However, to approach the government for compensation is beyond belief. It is like building your home under a slide area or on a ood plain next to a roaring river and then applying to the government for loss of property due to ones own ignorance. All open pen farms should be on dry land and the ďŹ sh farm companies know this, yet they ďŹ ght it so as not to set a precedent for other open pen salmon farms around the world. Now, for them to ask our government for our dollars to bail out their foreign international companies is beyond any stretch of the imagination. There are only three alternatives for these feed lots, put the facilities on the beach and out of reach of IHN, pay exorbitant rates for loss insurance, or pack your bags and go home. To ask us for compensation to continue to foul the oceans is not very palatable. BOB TRITSCHLER Parksville

I have followed, through the media, the development of the Northern Gateway Pipeline proposed project from the beginning. A major deďŹ ciency of the reports that I have reviewed is any serious discussion of alternatives, including a recognition that the oil sands are not going away and can be developed over time to meet market demands in the future. DOG DILEMMA What is it about some dog owners? I know that there are responsible dog owners out there. I know them, I like their dogs. I have no issue with them. What is it though, that makes a person let their dog out, unattended, in the late evening and allow them to bark loudly and incessantly for hours, while the rest of us are trying to sleep or otherwise have some peaceful thought in the sanctuary that is our home? Surely, they realize that, with the current hot weather and the many open windows, that this sort of cacophony is all the more intrusive. I have to wonder then, about the person or persons who are currently allowing their dog to ?have his way? with the otherwise peaceful existence that is this lovely town of Qualicum Beach. Will they continue to put theirs, and their dog’s needs above those of their fellow humans? With any hope, he or she will read this and perhaps ďŹ nd another way to relate both to their pet, and the nice humans that occupy the same neighbourhood. CRAIG DRUMMOND Qualicum Beach

Being dependent on a single customer is not a good strategy for any business. But that being said, what is the hurry? Naturally the investors in oil sands production and Enbridge want early returns, but their interests must not be the sole determinant of method or timing. David Anderson’s suggestion of rail delivery to port in Prince Rupert is certainly worth some serious study. Has this been done? How about investing in upgrading and reďŹ ning capabilities in Canada, particularly Alberta, keeping those jobs in Canada and exporting ďŹ nished or semi-ďŹ nished products? Typically, distillates can be shipped by pipeline and tanker with much less environmental risk than the bitumen produced directly from the oil sands. I believe Canadians, and in particular British Columbians, are entitled to an unbiased evaluation of the many available alternatives to the Northern Gateway proposal. CLIFFORD M. STONE Parksville

West Nile risk goes up with temperatures VANCOUVER — Higher temperatures mean more mosquitoes, and the BC Centre for Disease Control is warning that some of them may carry West Nile Virus. Increasing numbers of mosquitoes have been particularly noticeable in the Okana-
gan and the Fraser Valley, and people in those regions and elsewhere should take appropriate precautions to prevent mosquito bites. West Nile Virus (WNV) is transmitted from birds to people through the bite of an infected mosquito.
So far this year there have been no positive test results in B.C. from human, animal, or mosquito samples. — Submitted by the BC Centre for Disease Control (http://westnile.bccdc.org.)

Maureen Groves hopes to top the $2,100 she raised last year cycling to Victoria for Grandmother’s to Grandmother’s.
writer@pqbnews.com
aureen Groves is spending more time than usual out on local roads. “I belong to the Oceanside Grandmothers for Africa group which is part of the Stephen Lewis Foundation,” she recently explained to THE NEWS about her current adventure. “The various Grandmothers to Grandmothers groups raise money to help grandmothers in Africa that are supporting and mothering their orphaned grandchildren due to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.” Last year Groves started cycling with the Victoria group to raise money and awareness, doing the fifth annual ride 275 kilometres from Campbell River to Victoria. Groves, not shy about turning 60 just before this year’s ride, moved to Qualicum Beach with her husband Ron 20 years ago from Victoria.
M
Qualicum Beach
“We knew we wanted to retire here, so we moved here with the kids so they could grow up here,” she said. They started a card and gift shop and switched to open Village Clothing about 17 years ago, which she and Ron still run. “This will be my second year riding with the group, last year I raised over $2,100 and our team raised over $59,000,” she said, proud of the efforts of her 30 women teammates ranging in age from 50 to 81. They hope their cumulative six year total will surpass $250,000 this year. Groves has made it to Victoria a
couple times to train with other riders this season, but generally she can be seen training around District 69, riding to Cook Creek and back or around the Coombs-Parksville triangle. They ride from Campbell River to Qualicum Bay on Friday, September 7 and stop for breakfast with mayor Teunis Westbroek at the Shady Rest at 9 a.m. the next morning. That day, September 8, they make their way most the rest of the way down the Island with brief breaks along the way as various Grandmother to Grandmother groups help refresh and support them. They plan a stop at the Nanoose Place hall around 10:30 a.m. On Sunday they ride the final stretch into a large welcome in Victoria on National Grandparents Day. To donate visit bit.ly/maureeng or contact Groves at her store in Qualicum Beach at 250-752-0436, villageclothing@shawbiz.ca or 120 W. Second Avenue.

LDB contributes $4.3 billion to B.C. CONTINUED FROM PAGE A3
Aside from concern for the employees they represent, Walker wrote, “I’m also concerned about the impact these changes and the loss of government revenues will have on communities throughout the province.” He points out the LDB, owned by taxpayers, contributed $4.3 billion to general revenue over the last five years and the government should
consider modernizing and expanding hours to generate more revenue rather than seeking privatization. The resolution from council picks up on that suggesting that the system is currently a public asset and dismantling it will lead to higher consumer prices (as happened in Alberta) and increased social problems that municipalities will be left to deal with.
“I’m certainly in favour of privatization, it should have been done many years ago,” countered coun. Al Greir, speaking in favour of privatization in general. The resolution passed with only Greir opposed, and coun. Bill Neufeld absent, calling for a moratorium on the privatization until the government conducts a formal public discussion with community input.

Hazel Louise Hovell (nee Baker) Hazel was born on March 18, 1955 and passed away on August 3, 2012. She was predeceased by her parents Betty-Lou Baker and Clinton Bud Baker and is survived by her loving husband of 17 years, Craig Hovell, also her siblings; Clinton (Corina) Baker, Tracy Baker, Don Baker, Brian (Cori) Baker and Chris Baker, all of Edmonton, AB, plus numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. To know her was to love her. She was the kind of person who lived her life one day at a time; be it a good day or not she always had a smile. Hazel lived a simple life and touched many people’s hearts where ever she went and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. A gathering to honour Hazel will be announced at a later date. YATES FUNERAL SERVICE & CREMATORIUM (250-248-5859) in care of arrangements
CARPENTER, Audrey Elaine
Elaine Carpenter of Qualicum Beach passed away peacefully on 04 August 2012 and is now in the very presence of her Lord and Savior. The day before she was surrounded by her family, laughing and telling stories. Elaine was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and moved to Fort William, Ontario as a child and eventually she went into training to become a registered nurse. Born to help others, she practiced nursing for 43 years only to continue helping others into retirement through the visitation committee at the St Stephens United Church in Qualicum Beach and with the Canadian Cancer Society by canvassing, visitations, support groups and administration. Her greatest joys were her four sons and their families. She showered her 8 grandchildren with shortbread, ribs, coffee cake and love. Other passions included tending her flower gardens, making quilts for loved ones and sharing smiles with friends. Survived by her husband and best friend of 58 years, Ken. Loving and supportive mother of four sons and their wives Murray and Dawn; Scott and Leslie; Brad and Karen and Ian and Grace. Loving grandma to James, Elizabeth, Samantha, Elsbeth, Rebecca, Miriam, Josie and Abigail. She was a wonderful sister to Gwen (Joe) and Alan and surviving in-laws Betty-Ann, Dorothy, Helen, Ross and Lee and Shirley and Harry as well as an aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brothers Harold, Bert, Jim, Earl and sister Beryl. A memorial service was held at St Stephens United Church, 150 Village Way, Qualicum Beach on August 10, 2012 at 1:30pm. Donations to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society are welcomed in lieu of owers. YATES FUNERAL SERVICE & CREMATORIUM (250-248-5859) in care of arrangements.

Albert Christopher Murray
Murray – Albert Christopher, passed away Wednesday, August 8th at the Swift Current Care Centre in Swift Current, Saskatchewan at the age of 92. Albert was born in Golden Prairie, Saskatchewan, January 23rd, 1920. Predeceased by his parents William and Helen Murray; sisters Charlotte, Annabelle, Rose and Pearl and brothers Fred, Walter, Charles, Kenneth, Tom and Henry. Albert is survived by his sister Kay (Bill) Keith of Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Albert worked in the Maple Creek and Golden Prairie areas in a variety of jobs before moving to Regina where he began his career, that would become his passion, as Greens Keeper at Flowing Springs Golf Course in Regina. Albert was a fixture at Flowing Springs since it was built in the early 1960’s. In 1978 the course was purchased by Loney and Bunni Anderson and Albert became Greens Keeper. With his passion for the course and his love of the game and with the help of his dogs, particularly Scotty, Albert became the best gopher exterminator a golfer could ever ask for. Albert retired in 2005 at the age of 85 years. Albert was a friend, mentor and golf coach to many golfers both young and old at Flowing Springs and it was this person that so many of us will fondly remember and miss. Albert spent his winters enjoying the past-time of golf in Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island where his personality and friendship endeared him to another complete group of friends and golfers. In his short retirement he was to find his final student of the game, Jesse. A young man who became Albert’s dearest friend and student until his death. At Albert’s request no funeral will be held but at a later date a celebration of Albert’s life will be hosted at Flowing Springs Golf Course. Those wishing to attend should email angus.smith@kitchencraft.com or call 1-306-530-0394 so that the details can be sent to you when a date is chosen. Special Thanks to Lil Rognstad, Lesley Kowbel, Jesse, Trudy and Terry Lacher for helping Albert in his later years, your efforts and friendship were appreciated. Albert‘s advice to everyone was to “Be Happy and friends and family can take comfort in the fact that Albert will now always be Happy!

The greens were the best they’ve been in years and 36 players turned in a great pace at this years Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Club’s Men’s Club championship. A four-round 32 hole event played out over Saturday and Sunday, the long-running in-house tournament for bragging rights went off without a hitch said Bob Benning, QBMGC Men’s Club captain. Saturday morning tee-off was 7:15 a.m., and Sunday saw an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. “The pace of play was wonderful for both days — day one we averaged four hours for the field, and on day two we averaged three hours and 45 minutes, which is terrific,” Benning said after, then made the point “it’s the fastest pace we’ve had for the championships in years.” See CLUB DATES, page A34

Hank Acres knows hockey, and his passion for the game and for helping young players become the best they can be, was again evident at Oceanside Place last week.
Acres Hockey School expands
Added value in the form of extra training and high-tech hockey gear JAMES CLARKE
sports@pqbnews.com
Hank Acres is back in Sweden already, ramping up for his first season as a coach with his former club, but closer to home it’s evident the hockey school that bears his name continues to lay the foundation for future students of the game. As always, this year’s Acres Hockey school, the ninth annual, featured many local players and plenty of Islanders in general, as well as players from the Lower Mainland, Alberta, Manitoba and internationals from the U.S. and as far as Hong Kong. Acres, 37, was raised in Ontario and moved here in 1992 with family and attended Ballenas Secondary School. A dedicated (and decorated) defenseman in his playing days, Acres laced up for the hometown Generals for two seasons (1992/’93); went on to play Junior A with the Nanaimo Clippers and Victoria Salsa, and made the jump to play semi-pro in Europe 10 years ago. He launched his school in the spring of 2003 with the help of family and friends. Six students turned out that first year, and it has grown from there.
A participant in Henry Acres’ hockey school takes a much-needed drink of water.
Fast forward to this year, and just over 70 players (boys and girls) aged four to 15 turned out for the one week school (July 29-Aug. 2). Acres himself even seemed impressed with how far the school has come, but his commitment to the kids goes well beyond the ice as he continues to add other elements to the school. “Most definitely … it’s getting closer to my vision, but it’s like life, it’ll never be finished.” This year’s school featured a great cast of supporters.
Former Canuck Cliff Ronning and his company BASE Hockey was there teaching shooting on and off the ice “Use of video will be incorporated,” Acres said, “very cool use of technology that each player will receive a video of their shot overlapped with Cliff or Al Ifarate for slapshots, after the school week. Along with personalized shooting tips and drills.” Dr. Saul Miller, an American sports psychologist who has worked with the NHL, NBA, MLB and NFL made the trip here to talk to players about the mental side of hockey and how to become a complete player. Impakt Protective from Ottawa donated a Shockbox — an impact alert sensor for players to test on their helmets during the week. The high-tech helmets alert parents and coaches by sending info to their smartphone when the player has received an impact. The dry-land portion of the camp was overseen by Dayna Harstad, former National Team member and 2003 Canadian Women’s Welterweight Taekwondo champion turned personal trainer. Lawn bowling fundraiser Aug. 15 PARKSVILLE — From the desk of Carol Bucyk a reminder the Parksville Lawn Bowing Club will be hosting an important fundraiser on Wednesday. “The Shades of Pink Tournament is held by our club annually, and its main purpose is to make life easier for cancer patients and their families, and to raise awareness to the importance of screening and early detection,” said Bucyk, explaining the women lawn bowlers of the club dress in pink for this event, while the men set up the greens for play, “then wear beautifully stitched pink aprons to serve lunch to the female players later in the day.” There will be 16 triples teams (48 women) playing in the tournament, which will see volunteers for the Canadian Cancer Society PV/QB Unit for Support Programs in attendance to open the tournament by rolling the first bowl. McGibbon posts best time in Ocean Mile Swim 55th annual Qualicum Beach spectacle sees 55 swimmers take part; RAC Breakers were first ones out of the water JAMES CLARKE

How fitting that 55 swimmers — that’s up by 11 from last year — took to the brine down by Four Pole Beach with family, friends and random spectators cheering them on from shore Sunday, for the 55th annual Qualicum Beach Ocean Mile Swim. It is the longest running annual event on Vancouver Island, and for the volunteers that keep it going, the payoff is days like the one they had Sunday. “Oh yeah ... the day was beautiful,” longtime swim volunteer and booster Doug Taylor said after the seaweed had settled. “I mean it was much the same as last year but people were saying it was even better. The water was warm, there were no jelly fish ... it attracted quite a crowd,” he chuckled. In the end, it was a couple of Ravensong Aquatic Centre (RAC) Breakers that were first out of the water on Sunday, with Angus McGibbon posting the fastest time at 22 minutes and 12 seconds, and right on his heels as in five seconds behind, was Haley Bennett at 22:17. “It was good,” Hayley, 12, surmised nonplussed and looking like she’d just got back from a quick dip. The Breakers’ swim team, she said, do some open water training and added this was her third year swimming the QBOMS. For those following along at home, it takes 64 lengths at Ravensong Aquatic Center to swim a mile (40 lengths for a kilometre). In other local results, Haley’s dad Shawn Bennett was the fastest in the open category (wetsuits) at 22:34. Mercedes MacDougall finished in 25:33 for first in the

Conditions were ideal for the 55 swimmers that turned out for Sunday’s 55th annual Qualicum Beach Ocean Mile Swim. Above, RAC lifeguard Lynsey Epp drives for the finish line.
“It was a fantastic day — I’d say top five for weather in the 11 years I’ve been doing it, and the bonus was it wasn’t windy. It was

just an all-round great day,” she said, adding, “the spectators were wonderful ... it’s just an excellent, fun family event that en-
courages active participation in our community, and I thought that was just awesome having 55 swimmers on the 55th year.”

field of 19-25 year olds. Peter Poland kept the Poland name on the podium, finishing first in the 5064 year old category in 30:05. Qualicum Beach mayor Teunis Westbroek was in the mix completing the swim (without a wet suit) in one of the largest categories, the 12-swimmer 50-64 age group, in a time of 47:10. Ten-year-old Ethan
Standard from Qualicum Bay was the youngest finisher this year. Gerry Britton, 72, from Bowser was the oldest. As always, the OMS had entries from all over the Island and even the mainland. Steve McFaden, here on holidays from Australia, was the swimmer from the furthest away and finished in 30:12. Watching on from
the sidelines Sunday as she often does was Betty Breakwell, one of the co-founders of the Ocean Mile Swim 55 years ago. “She was also the one that introduced the Red Cross water safety swimming lessons to our local children down at the beach front 60 years ago,” OMS organizer and RDN aquatic programmer Anne Porteous said after.

Matt Auerbach, equipment manager for the WHL’s Victoria Royals, was there teaching the kids about the importance of properly fitting equipment, skates and helmets. There was a free concussion awareness seminar open to the public and to parents of kids in all sports put on by Colleen Butler, founder of Brain Navigators, and along the way there were games, prizes, and pizza day from Boston Pizza. While Acres oversees all the skaters, the goalie training by Progressive Goaltending provides the stoppers with personalized video analysis. This year’s camp proved to be particularly rewarding for Acres, as he realized his dream of creating the Michal Vincent Acres Memorial Bursary. “It’s what I’m proudest of this summer,” he said easily when THE NEWS caught up with him between classes. Michal was Acres’ brother who passed way in a house fire at the age of three on Jan. 12, 1985. “This bursary has been a goal of mine since the creation of the hockey school,” said Acres, and explained how “working together with the Rotary Club of Parksville, we have created an opportunity based on financial need to provide free admission to the school for a minimum of three participants in 2012 (for more information go to www. acreshockey.com).” While here, Acres was also working with the Oceanside Minor Hockey Association “to create some other projects during the weeks I am available to be in Parksville ... I am a big believer in all the work OMHA does to provide hockey for our youth, and anything I can do to help bring and keep more kids involved in hockey I am willing to do.” In the end, all 10 kids that applied were able to be part of the school, “almost all as full bursary recipients.” “Our goal this year was to provide a minimum of three bursaries,” said Acres, pointing out they exceeded that number with the donations received and Acres Hockey sponsored the other half.

Henry (or Hank) Acres gives pointers to a couple of the participants in the hockey camp that bears his name.
“The whole program is designed to promote playing safe, having fun and dreaming big. All of our add-ons are related to keeping you safe. Improving base skills (skating, shooting, passing, stick handling) is the best method to stay safe and have more fun out on the ice. I know minor hockey coaches are volunteers and they do their best,”he said, “but I implore all coaches to be overly positive while building relationships and confidence in these young people. Speaking with many players during the school, there are a growing number of players that don’t believe their coaches believe in them and want them to succeed.” The main goal of his program, he said, “is to provide an exceptional hockey school experience for players in the mid-Island region without the added costs of travel/accommodation that are required to attend programs in the Okanagan (or other places).” Acres’ coaching debut came last year as an assistant coach in charge of defensive play with the Steel Bulls out of Dunaujvaros, Hungary. “We had a very successful season,”
he said of the team, which won two of a possible four titles. The Steel Bulls competed in two leagues last year, playing the regular season in the MOL league made up of teams from Hungary and Romania, and also in the Austrian National League, the second highest league in Austria. Fast forward to today and Acres is gearing up for his first season as a coach with his longtime club Asplöven HC, which is making the jump up this season to Hockey Allsvenskan, the second highest pro league in Sweden (comparable in North America to lower AHL and top ECHL level of play). The new position is a homecoming of sorts for him as he spent five seasons playing for Asplöven HC and it is also where he met his wife Christina, who has her hands full with their twins, William and Emma, now two-and-a-half. The family resides in Christina’s hometown of Haparanda, a small coastal town on the Swedish/Finish border. Acres said he will be back at Oceanside Place next year overseeing the onice coaching at Acres Hockey, which will be moved to the beginning of July.

QBMGC dates back 99 years, and the men’s club championship almost as long. Fast forward to the weekend and the overall club champion for the second straight year was Les Pockett who fired a three-under par 67 on day one, and a 78 on day two, for a five-over total of 145. The tournament has awards for the top two players in all five divisions. Les was top dog in Division A, and runner-up
was former club champion Peter Drummond who was four strokes back at 149 (73,76). Locky Hay won Div. B at 162 (80,82). Runner-up was Walter Teichgrab at 164 (81,83). Drew Braid finished first in Div. C at 169 (83, 86), and runner-up was Gunter Fissler with a 172 (84,88). In Div. D, Doug Ebbett finished first with a 171 (86,85) and the runner-up was Jerry Kitzler at 176 (85, 91). An award was also
presented to the overall Low Net winner (gross score minus handicap), taken by Ethraim Kubai at 132 (69, 63) who led the field by three shots. “The two days were wonderful for weather, and the golf course was in the best condition that it’s been in for a men’s club championships for the last eight years.” The QBMGC Men’s club, which numbers 88 members this year, started up in mid-April and runs through to late October.

OMH grads win award PARKSVILLE — The Jeff Nabseth Memorial Scholarship was awarded to four Oceanside minor hockey graduates this year. More than $31,000 has been awarded since it was established in 2001 a couple of years after Nabseth’s death. Nabseth played hockey for many years with Oceanside minor hockey as well as junior hockey with the Surrey Eagles. Oceanside minor hockey started the scholarship fund and contributes $5 per registered player so that the scholarship can continue. In order to qualify, applicants must have played in the OMHA as well as be strong students, community supporters and contribute back to minor hockey. Jackson Collette is planning on attending UVic in September and hopes to pursue aeronautics engineering. He has participated in many sports and also has been part of the band program throughout high school. He plans to continue playing hockey and refereeing. Owen Addy is going to attend UVic in the mechanical engineering program and has played hockey as well as officiated. Owen has been awarded as the top metalwork student for three years and also been active in lacrosse and motor cross. Ryan Blyt is planning on attending UVic in the social sciences program and plans to pursue political science. He has refereed for Oceanside hockey for a number of

years and has mentored younger officials. He has been on the honour roll throughout high school. Ben Hamilton is planning post secondary education in journalism. He has been a referee for Oceanside hockey for the past four years and has been a goalie instructor for younger players. Hamilton has been working on improving the environment for the community. Every year it gets more challenging to choose because of the outstanding applications. It is very rewarding that we can assist these young people in their pursuit of a higher level education. We wish the very best for all of these young men in their future endeavours. — Submitted by Oceanside Minor Hockey

CARVERS IN QUALICUM BAY
Carving out a new path for Bowser First wood carving extravaganza in Qualicum Bay and Bowser areas sets the scene for plenty of art on display LISSA ALEXANDER
reporter@pqbnews.com
I
t was a carving extravaganza in Qualicum Bay last week and it drew big crowds, said owner of the Sandbar Cafe Helen Hal-
lett. “Tons of people have been stopping by,â€? she said on Saturday, as the sculptors ďŹ ne tuned their pieces on the last day of the event. The idea for the event came from local artist Ken Kirkby, who wants to ďŹ ll Bowser and Qualicum Bay with sculptures over the next 10 years, in order to attract more tourists. Four carvers started creating their large wooden pieces on Aug. 9 and carved throughout three days, completing them Aug. 11. Kirkby said next year there will be even more carvers. “Each year it will grow bigger and bigger and we’re going to ďŹ ll Bowser with beautiful things made by human beings to attract people from all over the country,â€? he told THE NEWS prior to the event. The four carvers: Howard Lobb, Dan Richey, Jerry Strelioff and Oscar Moria, impressed the crowd Saturday, as they used chainsaws, blow torches and other carving tools to bring their pieces to life. The four carvings have already been bought this year by local merchants, explained Hallett: Tomm’s Food Village, the Salish Sea Market, The Crown and Anchor Pub and the Sandbar Cafe. They will be displayed for the public to enjoy, and next year she hopes more of the town ďŹ lls up with the art. “We have two at this end (of town) and two on that end, so now we just have to ďŹ ll in the rest,â€? she said, smiling.

Local merchants sponsored the event, providing money, food and accommodation to the carvers. Kirkby, president of the Nile Creek Enhancement Society (NCES), said people come to the area to ďŹ sh Nile Creek thanks to the success the society has had restoring salmon, and now people will come see the sculptures and spend money in the area. He’s hoping the annual event will put Bowser on the map,
and with the media attention the event has received so far, it seems to be working. “One of my customers (in the Sandbar Cafe) came up and said ‘I have to thank you for making our little community known’ said Hallett on Saturday, “and that makes it all worthwhile. Dan Richey creates a wooden eagle clutching a fish in Qualicum Bay.

TMT instructors Hilary Whelton and Donna Wilkins said they have a diverse range of students this year, from very experienced to some who have never been on stage before. “What we ďŹ nd very quickly is the more experienced start to mentor the less experienced and it becomes a really collegial team environment,â€? she said. The program has been doing well for a number of years and this year there are 23 students in the program ranging from 12 years to 18. Whelton said the program can’t take many more than that and she attributes some of the camp’s success to the fact that many of the kids play sports in the winter and this is their only opportunity during the year to act. Also, a core group that has been taking part and loving the

With a tough economy, Whelton said the B2B educational programs have had more requests than normal for ďŹ nancial aid. Thanks to grants from the Regional District of Nanaimo, Dolphin Bay Music, The Bank of Montreal and the Rotary Club, the families that needed ďŹ nancial assistance were able to get it. “Personally I think this is how the whole world should work,â€? Whelton said. “I’m very grateful that the sponsors for the B2B education programs are able to make it work for the young folks in our community.â€? program for the past few years also get the word out and bring along new friends. Some older, former students of both TMT and B2B’s Junior Music and Performance program have also come back and are helping out with technical work, assistant directing and stage managing. “It seems really special to have that kind of continuity,â€? said Whelton, â€œâ€Śand it does suggest we are doing something right.â€? A Kidsummer Night’s Dream will happen Aug. 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. and Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. at the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach. Experience the music of ethnic cultures while enjoying music to dance to at the Errington Hall this Saturday night, for the 43rd Hi Neighbour Day Dance. Tambura Rasa is returning to the hall to play their world fusion music with a focus on Flamenco and Balkan. “What I love doing with the music is taking different elements from a bunch of different cultural backgrounds and then finding ways to fuse it together,” said guitarist and leader of the group, Ivan Tucakov. Tucakov has a Serbo-Croatian background, but was raised in Turkey and said his love for multicultural music comes from extensive traveling and being immersed in different cultures. The music also has Middle Eastern Turkish, Indian classical and gypsy jazz influences, he said. The group plays all original music and sometimes throws in a couple of covers, one a Macedonian traditional song. The Vancouver-based group has five CDs released, the latest Adsum, was nominated for Best World Recording at the Western Canadian Music Awards. Their 2009 CD Tambura Rasa Beats was also nominated for the same award. Tucakov has also written a book The Mindful Connection Method and holds workshops and a blog about social dynamics and conflict resolution. He said there is a crossover between his book and his music. “The music we do actually recognizes the fact that there is different styles of music out there and we need to hear all of those and accept them,” he said. “Being able to understand someone else is to be able to hear where they are coming from.”
Tambura Rasa released their first CD in 2004 and Tucakov said since that time the music has gained more depth. Although the group has always been about trying new things, he said, now they push the boundaries a little bit more as band mates are very comfortable playing together. But there will be even more changes for the group very soon as the drummer has decided to move out east. Tucakov said they’ve had a wonderful time playing with Trevor Grant and after he leaves, Tucakov will explore a direction he took with earlier CDs, which is bringing atmospheric, ambient compositional elements to the forefront. The music is more for sitting theatre audiences, he said, and he is planning to do a big show in Vancouver in November with a string quartet and a classical pianist. But in Errington, he said, the group will focus on music to dance to, and will continue to make this type of music as well adding some guest acts on various instruments if shows lend themselves to that, he said. Don’t miss Tambura Rasa Saturday August 18 at the Errington War Memorial Hall. Tickets are $20, under 12 is $5 and under 5 is free. Doors open at 8:30 and the show starts at 9 p.m. Get tickets from the Errington Store, Cranky Dog Music in Parksville and Heaven on Earth in Qualicum Beach. For more on Tambura Rasa visit www.tamburarasa.ca.

Women’s church group marks 50th PARKSVILLE — A significant celebration was held recently in Parksville, to mark the 50th anniversary of the United Church Women’s Organization (UCW). Some local women attended the inaugural service back in 1962. A special service was organized with guest preacher
Marion Best, who was Moderator of the United Church of Canada from 1994-1997 and on the Executive of the World Council of Churches from 1991-2006. UCW Lifetime pins were presented to seven members of Knox United Church at the celebrations, who have served in the UCW for many years and/or made a signifi-
cant contribution to the organization at Knox United and elsewhere. Representatives from Grace United Church in Coombs and St. Stephens United Chruch in Qualicum Beach joined the congregation at Knox United for the special service. — Submitted by Margaret Edwards with the UCW
Hospice to offer new group sessions QUALICUM BEACH — Oceanside Hospice Society will now be offering the following groups that will run if participant numbers support the need. An End-of-Life Support Group is for people who are facing their own terminal illness and for their family members and caregivers. This drop-in group gives the opportunity to share feelings and experiences with others who are dealing with similar situations. This will be held Wednesdays, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, commencing Wed., Sept. 5. A Coping with Grief group is a six-week group covering topics such as the grieving process, sharing losses, emotions around grief, and the healing process. It offers an opportunity to get a better understanding of the grieving process and to process the experiences around your loss. Fall dates are Tuesdays, October 23 to November 27, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A spring session will also be held, Mondays, March 25 to April 29. Both groups are facilitated by a clinical coun-
