RCMP officials at the Pacific Region Training Centre in Chilliwack say it’s too early to speculate whether there’s any interest in acquiring the “1041 Building” should it come available with the closure of the Canadian Forces’ Area Support Unit. And it appears “unrealistic” for the necessary studies to be completed in time to use the building for a new rifle range, said RCMP Insp. Ken Burton, officer in charge of support services at the PRTC. The University of the Fraser Valley is interested in the property at 1041 Caen Road behind its Trades and Technology Centre, but UFV officials aren’t commenting publicly until after a tour of the property later this month. Chilliwack MLA John Les, the former Chilliwack mayor who has been instrumental in converting the former military base into what is now the Canada Education Park, was also non-committal about possible future uses of the 1041 building. But he pointed out the city has seen “huge economic and educational benefit” out of all the former military buildings and properties that are now being used by the RCMP, Canada Border Services, B.C. Call for dogs to control Cultus geese Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Cultus Lake Park Board is still on the hunt for a good goose management strategy. The resident population of Canada geese has increased in recent years, which means substantially more unappealing goose poop on the beaches. Lake resident Max Newhouse presented a proposal to the park board on July 27 that would see a handler and a trained border collie used to keep the geese at bay.
The Cultus artist told The Progress he often counts the geese at Cultus, as he’s on the beach quite often. Sometimes there are 10, or 100 geese around. Other times he’s counted as many as 300 at a time. Park Board officials started looking into their goose management options last year, studying raking equipment and vacuum type machines to keep the beaches clean. At the time, board chair Sacha Peter cited the growing numbers of geese, and the potential public health threat posed by the feces as part of the incen-
tive for them to find solutions at Cultus Lake. It could migrate from being an annoyance to a health issue, Peter said, and some Okanagan beaches had been closed because of high fecal counts in the water. “There’s no quick fix with this one,” said Newhouse. “The geese are very persistent and very clever.” He’d prefer not to see the geese culled, nor does he want to shake eggs, among the techniques employed by others. Fraser River gravel mining set to resume next year Robert Freeman The Progress After a two-year hiatus, Fraser River gravel removal operations are slated to resume early next year. “We are looking to resume sediment removal during January to March 2013,” Carol Loski, director of Emergency Management BC’s flood protection program, said in an Aug. 2 email sent to “stakeholders.” But why the program is re-starting now, and how effective gravel removal has been in flood protec-
tion over the past decade isn’t clear as EMBC officials did not return a Progress request for that information. Chilliwack MLA John Les blamed the two-year hiatus on the “endless requirement” for studies and reviews in the process for obtaining permits to remove gravel during the brief window when inriver work can be done. “That’s essentially what was happening,” he said. Last year, a gravel removal operation at Tranmer Bar was cancelled at the last minute when federal fisheries requested addi-
tional information, which pushed the project beyond in the window for in-river work. Despite his criticism of the process, Les stood by his pro-removal stance, saying “sustained” gravel removal does reduce the risk of flooding in the lower Fraser River. The EMBC is asking for “stakeholder” feedback on the resumption of gravel removal by Aug. 20. But Marvin Rosenau, a member of the Fraser River Gravel Stewardship Committee, said that’s not enough time for a full review of the consultant’s report to the EMBC.
“If they were honest about flood protection and engaging people,” he said, the EMBC would not send an email “out of the blue” in the middle of the summer when many stakeholders are on vacation. “We’re just back to the same-old same-old,” he said Monday. “All of the unresolved issues are still outstanding.” Each year, about 230,000 cubic metres of gravel and sand are washed down the Fraser and deposited in the “reach” between Agassiz and Chilliwack as the river current slows down. Thousands of folks will be testing them out for the first time as they experience the smash-hit musical Mamma Mia! on Friday night. But purchasing, rather than renting, the 1,000 new chairs in a nice shade of burgundy, may also signal something more longterm for the facility. “While this is a terrific hockey rink for Chilliwack, it’s so much more. “It’s an event centre,” said Prospera Centre CEO Glen Ringdal. They plan to bring even more world-class performances like Mamma Mia! to Chilliwack, including big-name concerts, unique sporting events and trade shows. “It’s a place the community can enjoy for all kinds of acts.” They’ve had their share of challenges in recent years, in terms of attracting other types of high-end stage entertainment to the facility. “Many in Chilliwack have said they felt the building wasn’t serving their needs. Our objective is to fill it with as many events as possible to meet the needs of the community.” The market they draw from includes Fraser Valley communities from Abbotsford to Hope. The centre has hosted everyone from Jann Arden, Leahy, George Jones and Alice Cooper, as well as the Celebration on Ice figure skating show with Elvis Stojko and Kurt Browning. It also saw the Continental Cup, Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance and last May, country legend Charley Pride. agement specifically to bring up the capacity of the facility to 3,000 seats for Mamma Mia. There will be 2,000 seats in the arena section and another 1,000 on the floor. “Mamma Mia! will be the seats’ grand debut and we couldn’t be more excited,” said Ringdal. The seats will be “ganged” to keep the rows together during the show. The high-caliber seats are on a par with those used in worldclass venues, said Ringdal. So far an estimated 70 per cent of available Mamma Mia! seats have been sold. Chilliwack is the only city in the Lower Mainland where the show will be performed. “We’re expecting to sell out,” said Ringdal. How crucial is that? “This building belongs to the
people of Chilliwack. They have to use it in the best possible way.” When it was built, Prospera Centre was seen as one of the first successful private-public partnerships in B.C. A design/build P3 partnership was forged in 2003 between the Chiefs Development Group and City of Chilliwack to build and run the sports and entertainment facility that would eventually boast 5,700 seats. It opened in 2004 and cost less than $22 million, including the 2005 seats expansion. The Chiefs Group will own the facility for another minimum six years, at which time it could revert back to city ownership. But the company could continue in its current role after that time, he said. He makes it clear they are
serious about filling the facility in the meantime. “Part of it is that we don’t have a good enough knowledge of what it is the people of Chilliwack want to see,” said Ringdal. “We’re ready to go out and get that.” They’re planning to professionally survey the community about its tastes. “We really want to hear what they’re interested in seeing.” Make no mistake, they love having the B.C. Hockey League here with the Chilliwack Chiefs, where the average attendance in Chilliwack was the highest of all 168 teams in the Canadian Junior Hockey League. “We’re still not satisfied. We want to fill the building for every game and for every event.”
Yukon, the Siberian Husky stolen from the SPCA shelter in Chilliwack, has been found. Skway Road residents spotted Yukon walking along Wolfe Road and, recognizing him from media reports, called police. “This is a good example of the community being the ‘eyes and ears’ of the police and helping resolve community issues of every level,” RCMP Cpl. Len vanNieuwenhuizen said. Yukon is now headed for a home with the family who had adopted him before he was taken from the SPCA shelter on Aug. 6 SPCA staff arrived at the facility on Hopedale Road at that time to find one of the outdoor shelters broken into — and Yukon nowhere in sight. Police put out a news release and photo, which was picked up by media outlets all over B.C. and beyond. Yukon was originally picked up as a stray walking along the Agassiz Bridge on Aug. 2 and taken to the SPCA shelter in Chilliwack.

Jocelyn Heaps shouldn’t be faulted for wanting to belt out Journey’s Small Town Girl come January. The 20-year-old dance instructor has lived her whole life in Chilliwack, but this winter, she’ll be packing her bags for the Big Apple where she will be attending the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts. For those of you who don’t know, this school is like the Harvard for the theatrically minded. Alumni have included Matthew Fox of Lost, Lauren Graham of Gilmore Girls, several actors from Glee, the Footloose remake, and more. “It’s like crazy to think about,” said Heaps. “It’s a pretty big opportunity.” An opportunity that was granted after Heaps, a petite young woman with Californiablonde hair, beat out hundreds of other performers at the World Championship of Performing Arts competition held in Los Angeles last month to secure a three-year, $35,000 scholarship. In a competition that had shades of America’s Next Top Model with its boot-camp style classes, go-see auditions, judged performances, and where performers required an invite to even audition, Heaps

came in first for her solo hiphop dance routine, third for her street jazz number, seventh for runway modeling, and made it to the semi finals for her acting monologues. “It was intense,” she said, noting there were thousands watching in the audience, many of whom were scouts and talent agencies. Heaps is no stranger to competition. Ever since starting in dance, she’s been regularly competing, has choreographed
commercials for Aviva hair products and Lululemon, and is currently a backup dancer for teenage heartthrob Brock Zanrosso. And yet, when her name was announced as the winner of the scholarship, it didn’t register. Fellow competitors sitting next to her nudged her, told her she had won, started screaming and cheering for her. Her mom and nana burst into tears. But for Heaps, it was all a daze.
“I didn’t even know they called my name,” she said. “I was so shocked, I didn’t see it coming at all.” Heaps was also awarded an industry award, granted to just 25 of the performers. Quite impressive given that prior to the competition, Heaps had never done any acting or runway modeling, and has only been dancing for eight years, teaching for six. Her love for the medium came hard and fast in elementary school when a friend brought her along to a hiphop class. At the time, Heaps was already ingrained in other sports that included soccer, baseball and basketball, but as soon as her feet hit the studio floor, “I knew this was what I wanted to do,” she said. “I knew it was something I would drop everything for.” One year after starting, she was assisting classes. Two years after, she was teaching. And for the last four years, she’s been a regular fixture at Project Dance Hip Hop in Chilliwack. Heaps hopes her entrance into the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts will lead her down a path towards continuing her teaching career, choreographing music videos, and one day dancing backup for Beyoncé. kbartel@theprogress.com twitter.com/schoolscribe33

The annual Chilliwack Flight Fest will take to the air again this weekend. But the event is about more than aerobatics and aerial mastery, says organizer Ray Firkus. It’s about inspiring a new generation to test their wings and pursue their dreams. Some of the biggest names in the airshow circuit will be returning to Chilliwack this Sunday – pilots like Dan Buchanan and Bud Granley who just performed at the Abbotsford Air Show last weekend. Buchanan is a master of powerless flight, says Firkus, and a true inspiration. After an accident left him paralyzed from the waist down, Buchanan returned to the air, mastering both sail planes and hang gliders. His performance, which often involves pyrotechnics that he rigs himself, has earned widespread acclaim, including three awards for showmanship. Bud Granley, meanwhile, also has a couple of showmanship awards to his name. He’ll be back with his signature move – a snap roll just seconds after takeoff. “Super Dave� Mathieson returns with a new plane this year. The popular performer will be flying the MX2 – considered to be the most advanced aerobatic aircraft in the world.

But Super Dave doesn’t just shake things up in the air. He’s also a partner in the Ryan J. Poe Foundation, which was established to help young people make the right decisions in life, using aviation to “inspire, motivate and provide a path for young people to realize their dreams.� This week Mathieson has invited a couple of local young people to experience the thrill of flight, Firkus says, and hopefully help them recognize their potential. There will be another special guest at this year’s Fight Fest that will show young people what is possible. Lt.-Col. Scott Greenough graduated from Sardis Secondary
School in 1987 and is currently the commanding officer of 2 Canadian Forces Flying Training School at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan – home base of Canada’s famed Snowbird aerobatic team. (Greenough, in fact, is married to Lt.-Col. Maryse Carmichael, the Snowbird squadron’s commanding officer). Greenough has 2,400 hours in the CF-Hornet, and has served overseas (Bosnia-Herszegovina, Italy) and North America. “I’d like to see us cut down the population in a gentler and greener way,” Newhouse said. He started intently researching the goose problem being faced by so many other communities across the globe. “The northern hemisphere has become overpopulated with the Canada geese, which is something Canada has now became famous for as well.” He searched the world over for anyone trying to employ trained dogs for geese control, only to find a local expert nearby in Abbotsford who tackled the problem at Mill Lake with a geese team, as well as another expert out at the Vancouver Airport.
“The whole world is working on this problem.” Park board officials recently voted to contact the expert in Abbotsford about the issue, as well as making it a bylaw contravention to feed wildlife in Cultus Lake Park. “We’re investigating more options,” said Park Board chair Bob McCrea. His understanding is that the goose feces problem is more unsightly, than it is a public health concern. “We hope to have more to report at the first meeting in September,” he said. McCrea said he personally thinks the border collies are an incredible breed, the way they expertly herd other animals.
“They just love to herd. They live to herd.” It probably works well in terms of controlling geese because the border collies don’t bark at their charges when they’re in herd mode, offered Newhouse. “They crouch down like a predator and move forward, advancing on them in an intimidating manner.” He doesn’t think shooing them works, or waving arms in the air, as well as letting dogs do their thing. So far the response to the trained dog idea has been positive, said Newhouse. “This is not something that has to be done right away. But it’s a good idea.” jfeinberg@theprogress.com

military. “I think it would fit into our plan,” he said, but added it is “too early” to say the RCMP has a need for the facility. The RCMP is looking at building a new rifle range facility, he said, rather than acquire an existing building. In addition to the studies that would be needed before purchase of the 1041 building, he said, capital expenditures by the RCMP now need provincial government approval under the terms of the new contract, which could further delay a solution to the noise complaints stemming from the existing rifle range. He said the RCMP is shooting for a new rifle range by late 2015. It’s not even clear the military will turn the property over to the Canada Lands Company for redevelopment after the ASU closes in fiscal 2013/14. Randy Fasan said the CLC is “not in the loop yet” as to what will happen to the 1041 building when the ASU closes. He said the decision must first go to the defence minister’s office, and then to the treasury board for review. If the federal government has no need for the building, then provincial and municipal governments would have a shot at acquiring it, he said. If there are no other takers, then it would come to the CLC for disposal. It was the CLC that developed the bulk of the former military base into residential accommodation. The 1041 building was home to the 39 Combat Engineers Regiment, which will move to the nearby ASU building when it closes, as expected. The Union of National Defence Employees is fighting the closure, which it says will cost the community 18 jobs with a $930,000 annual payroll. In a world where there is often precious little to celebrate, where citizens must die for democracy, people are gunned down in a movie theatre and countless other acts leave us saddened, disheartened or just plain cynical, every two years a spectacle takes place that breathes life back into the human spirit. The Olympic Games are a two-week celebration of youth, goodwill and ultimate effort. A glimpse, perhaps, into the lighter side, the better side, of the human condition. The Olympics are a spectacle where failure doesn’t result in civil war or poverty, but only an acknowledgement that more work is required. To lose leaves little consequence; we simply move on to the next event and hope. But to win leaves us punching the air in celebration, with lumps in our throat as our national anthem plays. We see the joy and understanding in the athlete at the top of the podium, having carried an entire nation’s hopes on their shoulders and succeeded. To have so much sacrifice pay off. That is what we celebrate. And while every Olympics has its shortfalls, corporate sponsorships and huge investment in venues, the price is worth it. For two weeks, the world converges in one place without politics, religion or greed. For two weeks, we get a glimpse of a world without borders. With the 2012 London Olympics now over, and as the Olympic Flame is once again extinguished, we can look back and pocket the moments of inspiration, learn from the failures and embrace the human race. ~ Black Press

Perseid meteor showers are the most easily seen If you missed the Perseid meteor shower this weekend, it should still be visible all week. In fact the meteor shower’s active end date is August 24. The Perseids are among the best known of meteor showers, they are the most easily seen (because skies in our area are often clear in August) and among the most dramatic with shooting ‘stars’ coming at the rate of 50-80 or more per hour. And this year Earth is on target to experience the ‘core’ of the Perseid swarm where the meteor concentrations are the densest. The Perseids, so named as they seem to radiate from the constellation Perseus, were first documented in Chinese records in 36 AD when 100 meteors were witnessed one summer morning. As the centuries went by, the Japanese and the Koreans also

recorded meteor showers at the same time. But the shower wasn’t actually named until 1835 when a Belgian astronomer noticed that it seemed to be coming from the constellation Perseus. Hence, the Perseids. But what created this amazing annual display? In the summer Margaret of 1862 a brilliant comet was EVANS seen car ving a trail across the night sky. Two Americans, Lewis Swift and Horace Tuttle, tracked it in telescopes and watched as its luminosity built during the month of August. The Swift-Tuttle comet, as it became known, was considered among the top ten of great comets of the 19th century.
A few years later, in 1867, Italian astronomer Giovanna Schiaparelli made the calculation that the orbit of the comet coincided with the orbit of the Perseids. He floated the idea that the comet shredded rock and debris in its wake as it swept through the solar system, leaving behind its meteor shower which returns to our celestial spot every August. But the elongated orbit of the Swift-Tuttle comet around the sun is so vast that it only returns once every 130 years. It was last here in 1992. In all probability, no one living today will be around to see its next fly-past. Scientists sometimes call these meteor showers flying gravel banks. Talk about killing off the romance of a nightly encounter. Apparently, Earth entered the edge of this gravel heap on July
17th. But it’s not, by any Earth standard, compact. The meteoroids can be anywhere from 95-160 kilometres apart and the spread of the cluster is staggering – as much as 80 million kilometres in diameter. It’s a pretty busy month for celestial stuff. On the heels of the Perseid shower comes a blue moon. The moon actually isn’t blue (at least not this year) but the expression refers to there being two full moons in the same month. There was a full moon on the 1st August and it comes around again as the blue moon on the 31st. Blue moons are rare, about once ever y three years. The reference launched the saying, ‘once in a blue moon’, because it seldom happens. But occasionally, the moon really can look blue. Forest fire

smoke will do it. Then there was the year 1883. The Indonesian volcano Krakatoa exploded with the force of a 100 megaton nuclear bomb. The ash from the volcano circled the world and rose to the very top of our atmosphere. It was filled with particles one micron wide (one millionth of a metre), scattering red light and allowing other colours to pass which changed the colour of the luminous moon to shades of blue and green. The ash caused such brilliant sunsets that fire engines were called out in New York and New Haven. But don’t count on that this month. Just know that once in a blue moon, space is a very busy place.

Re: Anti-noise bylaw in Chilliwack I live in the downtown core and the highly disturbing and unnecessary noise of a great many motorcycles and boom boxes (and the occasional “souped-up” vehicle), negatively impacts a great many residents who would like to enjoy a reasonable amount of peace and
tranquility in this community. This issue predominates in the months of the year that are conducive to taking advantage of the outdoors, whether it’s opening a window, enjoying patios, walking or even driving. Would you please explain why this is allowed to happen, why it goes unchecked, who is responsible, and if there are any currently
anti-noise bylaws or nuisance bylaws? If there are, then what is the reason they are not enforced, or is there fear of “rocking the boat?” I believe that if my car didn’t have a proper muffler and made that kind of noise I would be ticketed. Lynn Douglas
Trains ring motorist back to slower times Remember the good ol’ days when people weren’t rushing to appointments all the time, and when life went at a much slower pace? Of course, you would have to be old enough to remember. Today’s busy-ness with its deadlines and tight schedules only existed in the large centres of the world then, and time was not such a hot commodity as people seemed to have plenty of it. There is a spe-
cial place in our city -- a place that takes us back in time, back to those slower days. Here one can watch a train slowly move back and forth as railcars are unhooked and attached. Unfortunately, a pressing appointment or just getting to work on time usually doesn’t allow us to indulge in some good old fashioned train-watching, turning the event into a rather unpleasant and stressful experience. What really
brings out the stress factor in any late-for-work man is the assumption that, when the train is finally moving, the railcars will move all the way past the crossing whereby allowing at least some of the lineup to clear out. Instead, the train usually stops just one or two railcars short of clearing the crossing. There it sits for a while before crawling back for some more railcar moving action. Those drivers who finally decide
to turn around and who obviously didn’t pass this stress test should not be fooled. The trainwatching site sometimes stretches all the way from Young Road to Airport Road meaning, “don’t even think of going down Hocking Avenue.” Well of course, one could always go through Rosedale or Sardis to avoid Chilliwack’s special place where the good ol’ days come alive.

Better screening for colon cancer needed “I played hockey, I golfed, I could run up Teapot in 25 minutes, and all of a sudden that’s all been taken away from me.” Katie Bartel The Progress In Chilliwack, Hal Singleton is best known for his background in the military and politics. At the Abbotsford Cancer Clinic, he’s known as the unlucky one. The one who went misdiagnosed until it was too late. The one who has advancedstage colon cancer. The one who, doctors have assured, will die. Still, Singleton refuses to go gentle into that good night. The 69-year-old is furious with the death sentence and believes he could have had a chance – if only better medical systems were in place. ‘THAT’S WHAT SUCKS’
Singleton started experiencing abdominal and liver pains, and was losing weight, in the summer of 2010, all of which he said his doctor didn’t pay attention to. When he required a physical before going to Pakistan in September of that year, his ailments again weren’t checked. And when he came home complaining of severe abdominal and
liver pains, he felt he was given the brush-off. He said it was never once suggested that he get an early screening fecal occult blood test (FOBT) or colonoscopy, despite being in the high-risk category for colorectal cancer. With early detection, there’s a 90 per cent survival rate. “This is a highly treatable cancer and the doctor missed it, he completely missed it,” Singleton told The Progress. “For 17 years, from the time I was 50 to 67, there was no colonoscopy. That’s what sucks.” It wasn’t until Singleton got a second opinion that he was finally sent for an ultrasound and, later, a colonoscopy. The results showed colon cancer that had spread to his liver — so bad was it that the oncologist described his colon as an angry volcano ready to blow. He was given two to three years. “I went from being an athlete to something pretty close to a couch potato,” he said. “I played hockey, I golfed, I could run up Teapot in 25 minutes, and all of a sudden that’s all been taken away from me. I
can’t get it back. I lost 25 pounds, I became weak, my life crashed right smack there. “Colon cancer is a total thief in the night.” PROGRAM NEEDED
Last month NDP leader Adrian Dix was in Chilliwack pressuring the B.C. government to roll out a province-wide screening program for colorectal cancer. This cancer, which isn’t widely discussed, is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Canada. This year alone, approximately 3,000 in B.C. will be diagnosed, and 1,100 will die. And yet, with early detection, it has a 90 per cent survival rate. While the province has had an early screening pilot program in select communities since 2009, which has completed more than 15,000 FOBT screens and identified 46 cancers, Dix said it’s high time a province-wide program is implemented. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Health told the The Progress the government is currently working with the B.C. Cancer Agency and the Provincial Health Services
Authority to determine if it would be beneficial to expand the program across B.C. She also noted everyone in B.C. has access to colorectal cancer screening through their doctor’s office. But for Singleton, that’s not good enough. The retired military engineer, who ran for federal office twice under the Liberal banner, said if people don’t know about colon cancer or their screening options, they’re not going to request them. “The system is completely backwards, it’s broken” Singleton said. “The costs of treatment by far outweigh the costs of prevention. The money being spent on pharmaceuticals, oncologists, nurses is astronomical.” According to a 2002 Health Canada report, the annual costs of cancer is $14.2 billion. “The nurses [in the cancer clinic] have told me the biggest single reason people are there is because of misdiagnosis or lack of diagnosis,” said Singleton. “GPs are at the core of the medical process, your health rests on their shoulders, and if they don’t have the tools necessary, we’re just going to keep
filling the cancer chairs. “The system needs to be fixed.” ‘THE UNLUCKY ONE’
Even if the system is fixed, even if Dix comes to power and immediately implements a province-wide program, it will be too late for Singleton. For 21 months, he has been sentenced to a cancer clinic chair for four hours every two weeks; he has a catheter inserted in his chest to self-administer chemo at home; has ingested dozens of drugs; and has suffered chemotherapy side effects that have included a severe sensitivity to hot and cold, thinning of his fingernails and extreme eczema. He has undergone 43 chemo treatments, amounting to 2,300 hours in the chair, has gone through all five of the chemotherapy cocktails available and is back on cocktail number one. Two months ago, he was given 11 more months. “I got the short end of the straw,” he said. “I’m the unlucky one.” kbartel@theprogress.com twitter.com/schoolscribe33

Since then, this has been a mainstay of their programmes. They have been relentless in their battle to rid the world of blindness and other eye diseases, providing medication, eyeglasses, and surgery. However, the lions didn’t stop there. They are now the worlds largest non-governmental service organization working to help the poor, caring for the environment, feeding the hungry, aiding the disabled, the hard of hearing, the handicapped, helping seniors and much, much more. Today there are over 1.3 million members in more than 45,000 clubs worldwide. In 1977 the Mount Cheam Lions was established in Chilliwack, as a group of community minded people decided to join the Lions International in an effort to improve the lot of those in need. in the Chilliwack River Valley. Police were not available to comment on whether additional charges would be laid now that O’Hern has died from his injuries. Johnstone reportedly turned himself in to police after initially leaving the scene. Anyone who has information about the accident is asked to call the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
A 49-year-old man is still missing after the boat he shared with two others capsized in the swift waters of the Fraser River Saturday. RCMP and Kent/Harrison Search and Rescue volunteers scoured the shoreline for the missing man and an RCMP helicopter was called in for the search, but to no avail. Police said the fishing boat with three men on board capsized at about 3:20 p.m. near the AgassizRosedale bridge. An RCMP boat was on the river in the same area when the call came that a boat was taking on water and starting to sink. “The boat began to capsize and the occupants of the boat were not able to control the roll of the boat and it began to sink,” Staff Sergeant Sukh Parmar said in a news release. “Two of the occupants were able to swim to shore, however one male occupant, 49, was not able to swim across the strong current,” he said. The name of the missing man is not being released until family members are notified. The search continued Monday.

his 62-year-old grandfather in the Chilliwack Lake area was found early Friday morning. “They were not missing, just overdue,” RCMP Cpl. Dale Carr, acting regional duty NCO for the Upper Fraser Valley detachment, said. Carr said anxious family members in Aldergrove called police at about 10 p.m. Thursday when the pair did not return as planned. But apparently they were having so much fun camping, they decided to stay an extra night but had no way of contacting the family. The Chilliwack Lake area is out of cellphone range. “They were driving Loyal. From 10am to 6pm, a FREE shuttle service will run between the University of the Fraser Valley (old campus) and the Airport Terminal Parking Lot. Enter the UFV grounds via the Yale Road entrance, follow the Airshow signs to Parking Lots 5, 6 and 7. Meet your friends near the bright yellow and red “Shuttle Stop” signs and catch the shuttle running every 15 minutes. The shuttle will drop you off near the entrance to the Airport Parking Lot. You just can’t get any closer than that, and you can get back to your car just as easily! The usual Sunday bus schedule will be in effect Flight Fest Day. Note that bus routes which travel Airport Road will be detoured between Young Road and Brooks Avenue. Super Dave Airshows Dave Mathieson, better known as “Super Dave” in the airshow community, was voted the #1 aerobatic pilot in Canada… by his mom. (It’s on the side of his airplane, so it has to be true!) Mathieson currently flies the world’s most advanced aerobatic aircraft called the MX2. The aircraft is designed for plus or minus 16Gs, and has an incredible roll rate of 500 degrees per second and is powered by a 380HP motor giving the e aircraft a top speed of 300 MPH.

Major Brian Bews Maj Brian Bews began his flying career in 1995 in Okotoks, Alberta. After receiving his private pilot’s license, he went to Mount Royal College in Calgary and graduated with a Diploma in Aviation with a commercial pilot’s license and multiengine instrument rating. He enrolled in the Canadian Forces in 1999. Maj Bews attended the NATO Flying Training in Canada (NFTC) program in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and received his wings on the BAE Hawk jet in 2003. He was selected to be a fighter pilot and went to 419 Tactical Fighter (Training) Squadron in Cold Lake, Alberta to conduct Fighter
Lead In Training on the CT-155 Hawk. In 2004 Maj Bews finally realized his dream to fly the CF-18 Hornet while at 410 Tactical Fighter (Operational Training) Squadron in Cold Lake, Alberta where he remained for his first operational tour on the CF-18 Hornet with 416 Tactical Fighter Squadron, followed by a tour with 409 Tactical Fighter Squadron. In 2008, Maj Bews was posted to 425 Tactical Fighter Squadron based in Bagotville, Quebec and was selected as the 2010 CF-18 Air Demonstration Pilot. Following his season as the demo pilot he was posted to “The Big 2” Canadian Forces Flying Training School where he serves as an instructor pilot and Operations Officer. He has accumulated approximately 2,000 hours in the military, of which 1300 of those are in the CF-18 Hornet. Maj Bews grew up in Eatonia, Saskatchewan and spends his free time riding motorcycles; he is also a huge fan of motorsports of all kinds.
Lieutenant-Colonel Scott Greenough was born in April 1969, in Teulon, Manitoba. He enrolled in the Canadian Forces in August 1989 under the Officer Cadet Training Plan after graduating from Sardis Senior Secondary School in 1987. In February 1992, LCol Greenough completed his pilot training in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and was posted to Cold Lake, Alberta to begin his training as a fighter pilot on the CF-5 Freedom Fighter and CF18 Hornet aircraft. In June of 1994 he was posted to his first squadron, 416 Tactical Fighter Squadron. LCol hi Greenough’s five-year posting to 416 Sqn included a G ddeployment e with 2 Canadian Multi-National Brigade Group to Bosnia-Herzegovina as a Forward Air Controller G and an n a tour in Aviano, Italy conducting Peace Support Operations over Bosnia. In 1999, LCol Greenough was O selected to attend the Fighter Weapons Instructor Course se (FWIC) and graduated with Top Gun honors. (F In 1999, he was posted to 410 Tactical Fighter (Operational Training) Squadron, where he instructed both basic fighter pilots and FWIC candidates on the CF-18. In 2000, LCol Greenough was selected to be the western CF-18 Demonstration Pilot and spent the summer performing at airshows all over Canada and the U.S. In August 2001, LCol Greenough was posted to the Fighter Standards and Evaluation Team where he acted as a fleet-wide Fighter Force Standards Officer. In January 2002 he was promoted to the rank of Major and posted back to 410 TF(OT)S as the Squadron Weapons and Tactics Officer and the Officer Commanding the Fighter Weapons Instructor Course. In 2003, LCol Greenough was posted to 3 Wing Bagotville, Quebec where he was the Squadron Weapons and Tactics Officer for 433 TFS and Deputy Commanding Officer for 425 TFS. In March 2007, LCol Greenough was posted to the newly-established Canadian Forces Aerospace Warfare Center where he worked closely with international partners and allies on the development of new fighter concepts and doctrine development. LCol Greenough was promoted to his current rank in December 2010 and is currently the Commanding Officer of 2 Canadian Forces Flying Training School (2 CFFTS) at 15 Wing Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He has amassed over 3000 flying hours in CF aircraft, 2400 of which are on the CF-18 Hornet. LCol Greenough holds a Bachelor of Military Arts and Science degree from the Royal Military College of Canada and is a graduate of the Joint Command and Staff Programme at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto, Ontario. LCol Greenough is married to LCol Maryse Carmichael, the Commanding Officer of 431 Air Demonstration Squadron: The Snowbirds. They have two daughters, Georgia, and Danielle.

Yes, free from illness, disability, substance abuse problems, criminal activity, or premature parenthood; but shouldn’t we expect more than this minimum. I came across a great quote on this matter: “We want our teenagers to be healthy and vibrant, not merely free
of disease; optimistic and exuberant, not simply “non-depressed”; intimately connected to others, not just part of the crowd; intellectually curious and determined to succeed in academic and extracurricular pursuits, not simply content to do just what it takes to avoid failing; and passionately engaged in activities that excite them, not just “occupied.” Shouldn’t we all be so lucky, young and old, to live that view of health?

What does it actually mean to be healthy? People are constantly talking about living healthy, eating healthy, being healthy, and getting healthy. The World Health Organization defines health as: “a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Dr. Martin Seligman, psychologist who has pioneered the positive psychology movement describes positive health as “the group of subjective, biological, and functional assets that actually increase health and illness targets. As we were recently introduced by Dr. Lees, positive psychology is the scientific study of optimal human functioning. Its core philosophy can be described as a “build what’s strong” approach that can augment the traditional “fix what’s wrong” approach. In fact, proponents of positive psychology state that optimistic or happy people are healthier, more successful, and live longer than other people. Positive health lends itself to the following questions: • Does positive health extend lifespan? • Does positive health lower morbidity? • Is health care expenditure lower for people with positive health? • Is there better mental health and less mental illness? • Do people in positive health not only live longer, but have more years in good health? • Do people in positive health have a better prognosis when illness finally strikes? It would seem, in society, that so-called healthcare is really illness care. Even with regard to disease prevention and health promotion the focus tends to be on the reduction of risk factors for illness and very rarely on the encouragement of good health in its own right. However, the absence of symptoms and illness is not the same as health and vigour. For example, mental health or mental well-being is something over and above the absence of mental illness. It predicts lack of depression, higher achievement, and, according to posi-

rity chef, Jeff Massey, is coming back to the ‘Wack. He’ll be demonstrating the deliciousness of summer bounty for the second time at Minter Country Garden store on Young Road on Saturday, Aug. 18. After the excellent turnout at the last cooking event in June, he’s decided to do it again in partnership with master gardener Brian Minter. This time Chef Massey will be showcasing berries and fruit during the free morning demonstration. He’ll be whipping up a warm compote of blueberries, flavoured with thyme, rosemary and pepper, and pairing it with seared meat and vegetables. Known for seeking out the freshest ingredients possible, he’ll also be grilling up some orchard fruit, expertly complemented with an array of local cheeses and meats. Rough start as Huskers drop home opener Eric Welsh The Progress Preseason optimism has turned into regular season reality for the BC Football Conference Chilliwack Huskers, who find themselves 0-2 to start the 2012 schedule. The junior football squad played their home opener Saturday afternoon, hosting Victoria’s Westshore Rebels at Exhibition Stadium. Trying to bounce back from a 64-10 week one loss in Kamloops, the Huskers instead took another beating. Westshore walked off with a 46-8 win in a game that was as unequal as the final score would indicate. The visiting Rebels took the ball downfield on their first offensive series, taking a 3-0 lead on a 20-yard field goal by Quinn Van Gylswyk. Greg Morris set it up with a run off left tackle, scampering down the sideline for 36 yards, the first of several yardage-chewing scampers by Victoria’s bowling-ball tailback. The Rebels struck again on their third offensive series. On a second-and-six from the Chilliwack 38, Victoria quarterback Jesse Herman rolled to the right, then passed to the left, finding running back Niles Goguen uncovered in the flat. Goguen had a leisurely stroll into the endzone for the first Rebels TD and a 10-0 lead. Chilliwack’s of fense struggled mightily to get anything going. The power running game promised by new head coach Tyson St. James never found traction. The Huskers tried going to the ground early, but Victoria’s tenacious D dictated a different game plan. Chilliwack’s offensive fortunes instead rested on the right arm of rookie quarterback Braden Churly, who did what he could. “It’s because of the front Victoria played, a five-guy front that’s not very run friendly,” said Chilliwack native Dylan Boykowich, the team’s top offensive performers with eight catches and 106 yards. “We knew if we ran, they’d be right there. But we did some good things and we kept our composure, which was a big thing we didn’t do last week. And Braden, I liked him a lot. He made great decisions, but there were different things where someone

didn’t know a pattern, or the O-line let someone through or the play call didn’t work.” Harried by an aggressive Rebels pass rush, the pivot struggled to find his receivers on the short routes. And when he did connect, the results weren’t always as expected. On Chilliwack’s third offensive series, Churly completed a short pass on second down, only to have his receiver cough up the football. Victoria took over at the Chilliwack 15 yard line and took one play to punch it in on a Herman touchdown pass to Joe Barkhouse. Where Churly showed well was on the deep ball. The newcomer showed good touch on the bombs, and got his biggest play of the game on a second quarter completion to Dalbir Bhandal. Churly aired it down the left sideline, with Bhandal reeling it in for a 38 yard gain. That play helped Chilliwack get on the board,
with a missed 31-yard field goal by Brody Slagman netting the Huskers a single point. “I thought he did pretty well today, under the circumstances,” St. James said. Victoria responded with two majors before halftime to put the game well out of reach. Morris put the Rebels up 25-1 on a 32 yard run, cutting right, then left through the entire Chilliwack D on his way to paydirt. With 4:43 left in the opening half, Herman hit Eric Eggleston in stride as he flew down the right sideline. The 36-yard touchdown toss put the Rebels up 32-1 and triggered a new BC Football Conference rule. With Victoria’s lead above 30 points, the game clock switched to running time. The Huskers were mercyruled, and St. James wasn’t impressed. “I don’t find that competitive at all,” he said. “When they’re wasting time on penalties and stuff like that, how
are you going to come back? You’re missing snaps that might make your team better in the future. It’s frustrating and it’s something I’ll take up with the league. Unfortunately, it was the refs getting an earful today.” Had the Huskers trimmed Victoria’s advantage to less than 30 points at any time in the second half, the clock would have went back to standard operating procedure. That didn’t happen. Chilliwack’s lone touchdown came with the score already 39-1. Chilliwack native Josh Hayden brought the crowd to its feet, taking a Van Glyswyk punt to the house. The former Chilliwack midget Giant fielded the kick around midfield, split two Rebel defenders and got to the edge, bounding down the left sideline for his first junior football touchdown. “I thought our special teams really stepped up today. We worked on it all week, and it really showed,”
St. James noted. “All aspects of our game were really weak last week, but the special teams were much improved today. They really impressed me.” Victoria had the last say on the scoreboard though, with third-string quarterback Mike Dumesnil connecting with Eggleston for a 25-yard strike on the final offensive play of the game. Van Glyswyk nailed the convert to make the final 46-8. St. James was a picture of barely-restrained fury afterwards, suggesting some of his players need to take a good look in the mirror. “I always get disgruntled by lack of effort, and I saw that today on some of the plays that hurt us,” the coach elaborated. “It’s disappointing. You’ve always got to find the players who are going to put that effort forth. You either have it or you don’t, want it or you don’t. Finding guys that want it enough, that you can’t teach.” As for the things he can teach, St. James said he’ll
continue drilling football fundamentals into his young squad. “You celebrate the little things, and that’s what we’ll do, after the steam cools off,” St. James said. Things don’t get any easier for the Huskers with the unbeaten Langley Rams on the horizon. Chilliwack visits McLeod Stadium in Langley Saturday night, with memories of a horrific preseason beating still fresh. Boykowich believes that should serve as motivation. “This week is going to be about knowing your job and doing your job,” he said. “It was preseason, so you don’t take a lot from it because we didn’t show them everything and they (Langley) didn’t show us everything. But they did what they did, and now we’ve got to go and smack them back.” Chilliwack’s on the road for three straight before returning home to host the Rams Sept. 15 at Exhibition Stadium.

Yarrow paddler top female Canadian in kayak Yarrow’s Jazmyne DenHollander earned first place in women’s single kayak at the Canadian National Whitewater Championships in Quebec on the weekend. Denhollander joined Cameron Smedley of Dunrobin, Ben Hayward of Edmonton and Alexandra McGee of Ottawa on the podium. The wins signal a new generation in competitive canoe and kayak, says performance manager, James Cartwright. “It’s great to see an infusion of youth in the National Team program. This year all the national champions are under the age of 23. Jazmyne Denhollander is in her final year as a Junior athlete yet she is still competitive with the senior athletes.” The National Team now heads to Czech Republic and Slovakia for the final World Cups of the competitive season.

WITTHINRICH Kaethe Anni
April 16, 1915 August 8, 2012 Doris (Dorie) was born in Loverna, SK, fouth child to pioneers Leslie and Flora Buchner. As a COCHRANE child she lived in Watford, ON, and later Saskatoon, SK, where she married James A Couvrette. She spent many years in Ottawa, then Stratford, before moving to Chilliwack in 1954. An excellent homemaker and avid gardener, she participated in both the Atchelitz and Promontory Womens’ Institutes. She could manage a restaurant, be a receptionist, work in intermediate care at its inception, and still find time to advocate for others. While with the Chilliwack Safety Council she negotiated RCMP boat protection (against power boat swamping) for the First Nations paddlers during the annual Cultus Lake canoe races, and successfully lobbied for lighting of dangerous intersections to reduce accidents. She volunteered for several years with the Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce. She dearly loved animals and they flourished under her care. In her early retirement, she met and married Scotty (David) Cochrane, a most happy union that found them sharing many enjoyable trips around Europe and North America. Doris is survived by her daughter, Lauren; step-children: Beth (Harry), Sandy (Bonnie) and Gena (David), along with their children and grandchildren. Her legacy is one of love, strength, humour and honesty. “Live so that when your children think of fairness, caring and integrity, they think of you.” No service by Doris’s request. The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Cascade Lodge for their exemplary care during her three-year stay.
Kaethe Anni Wi t t h i n r i c h passed away on Tuesday August 7, 2012 at the Bradley Center at WITTHINRICH age 73 years. Kaethe was born on August 21,1938 in Kiel, Germany. Kaethe is survived by her brother Kay, and a sister Jutta. She was predeceased by a sister, Frauke (Fran). Kaethe has lived in Chilliwack since 1962. Kaethe and her friend Arnie enjoyed their many outings to Banners Restaurant. The family wishes to thank Rod, and staff for their kindness. At the family’s request there will be no service.
