Abbotsford will become the latest municipality in the Lower Mainland to have a bylaw regulating the use of blueberry cannons, if Coun. John Smith has his way. “I have experienced the situation of the complainants, and it’s intolerable,” said the veteran municipal politician, noting that council has received numerous complaints this year about the noisy bird scare devices. Dr. Barbara Fischer walks her Lefeuvre Road property wearing hearing protection because her neighbour has no less than five cannons that have been blasting as often as 165 times per hour this summer. The propane cannons automatically rotate, and Fischer said when they “shoot” their noise directly in her direction, it can leave her ears ringing. She raises horses, and one young horse was spooked by a cannon, threw her into a fence, knocked her down and stepped on her. She has dealt with the Blueberry Council’s grower liaison officer, but found they had no “teeth” in their enforcement. Another neighbour of the same farm, Diane Danvers, said she could not believe the noise level was allowable when she first heard the cannons at her house. They had it measured at 92.5 decibels, which is within the acceptable range, she said. For comparison, a train whistle is 90 decibels at 500 feet, and a jackhammer is

Dr. Barbara Fischer wears hearing protection when she’s outside on her Lefeuvre Road property due to the blasting of a neighbouring farm’s propane cannons. 95 decibels at 50 feet. “It’s enough to make you jump – and no, you don’t get used to it,” Danvers said. “If you were on shift work, I don’t know what you would do.” Both Danvers and Fischer have lived on their properties for some three decades, and can’t be considered “city folk” who are inconvenienced by normal agricultural smells, sounds or practices. “There has never been anything, in the 30 years we’ve been here, that we’ve complained about,” said Danvers. Their stories are familiar to Smith.
“There are all sorts of situations where people’s lives are being made hell,” he said. “I support farmers, but these cannons are so totally intrusive ... it’s unacceptable.” Smith was intending to serve his fellow councillors with a notice of motion at Monday night’s council meeting. He said the city will work with the agriculture ministry on the regulation, and research bylaws that have already been drafted by Surrey, Delta and Pitt Meadows. Smith would like to see the starting time for cannons moved from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m., and
the evening deadline moved from 8 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Cannons are already shut off for an afternoon break between noon and 3 p.m. He would also like to see cannon setbacks extended from the current guideline of 200 meters to 300. And, he is suggesting “tough” fines for non-compliance – $1,000 for the first offence and $2,000 thereafter. Ministry of agriculture berry specialist Mark Sweeney, who works in Abbotsford, said the ministry approaches this issue as one that demands compromise. He said blueberries generate $150 million in farm gate sales in the Lower Mainland, and more revenue in packing and processing – much of it done in Abbotsford. It’s a healthy industry, with room for growth, he said. But already an estimated 10 per cent of the crop is consumed by birds. A large flock of starlings can devastate a blueberry field. “Birds are a serious problem,” he said. “Farmers need the tools to protect their crop. “The question is what’s reasonable – the (ministry) guidelines represent a compromise,” he said. The ministry acknowledges it is appropriate for local governments to fine violators, and notes that situations where producers don’t respond to neighbours with legitimate complaints are rare. He said if Abbotsford’s bylaw sets limits that are different from government guidelines, the ministry would want to have consultation.

The toddler was chasing a fly, and when she went to swat it, fell through the window screen, said Mission RCMP Cpl. Mike Sukkau. The Wilderness Committee is teaming up with Tanker Free BC and the PIPE UP Network to host a town hall meeting on Aug. 15 at the University of the Fraser Valley auditorium, 33844 King Rd. in Abbotsford, at 7 p.m. Kinder Morgan is planning to twin the oil pipeline that runs from Edmonton to Burnaby, increasing capacity from 300,000 to 750,000 barrels per day. The pipeline runs through Abbotsford, where there is a Sumas Mountain tank farm and terminal facilities.
BASEMENT FIRE Smoking is believed to be the cause of a fire on Friday night at a multi-family residence at 2275 Beaver St. When fire crews arrived at about 10:20 p.m., heavy smoke was coming from the front of the home. The lone occupant had escaped. Assistant Chief Dave Rivett said that a resident of the home was smoking in the basement, where her computer was located, and then went upstairs to watch TV. She then smelled smoke, and went back downstairs. “Fortunately, she felt the door and it was hot. She didn’t go back into that area,” Rivett said. Two rooms in the basement suffered considerable heat and smoke damage, estimated at $30,000 to $40,000. Thirteen firefighters fought the blaze.

One week ago, Sophie Schmidt was kneeling on the grass at Old Trafford – the legendary home field of Manchester United – with tears rolling down her cheeks following a devastating 4-3 loss to the United States in the Olympic women’s soccer semifinals. Yesterday, the 24-year-old midfielder from Abbotsford walked through the international arrivals gate at Vancouver International Airport to a hero’s welcome, with a bronze O E D VI LINE medal around her ON ws.com neck and a smile abbyne on her face. “I don’t think there’s two bigger extremes,” marveled Schmidt, who helped her team bounce back from the U.S. defeat to beat France 1-0 in the bronze medal game. “You’re absolutely gutted for the (semifinal) result – you want to be in that gold medal game, but your dreams are crushed. But to end up winning a medal anyway, it’s fantastic.” Against the U.S., Canada held the lead on three occasions thanks to a hat trick from Burnaby’s Christine Sinclair, but they were undone by a series of controversial calls and ended up losing in extra time. After the game, sharp criticism of the referee by Canadian players – particularly Sinclair and Melissa Tancredi

Ultimately, FIFA held off on any punishment until after the Olympics. After all that drama, it was a wonder the Canadians were able to compose themselves for the bronze medal game. The French dominated, but Canada got the game-winner in the late going. Schmidt’s fingerprints were all over the play, which will surely go down as the most memorable goal in Canadian women’s soccer history. The ball came to her at the top of the box, and she unleashed a shot that hit a French defender. But the ball deflected onto the foot of Diana
Matheson with nothing but net in front of her, and she rolled it home. It was Canada’s first shot on goal of the game. “I thought I was going to score,” Schmidt admitted with a grin. “But it took a good deflection, and (Matheson) was in the perfect place at the right time. “I couldn’t even celebrate because I was so tired, but I was so happy.” The soccer team’s emotional roller-coaster ride at the Olympics captured the attention of the nation, and the flag-waving throng at Vancouver International on Monday gave Schmidt a taste of it. Her parents, Elmer and Cornelia, hung back as Schmidt fulfilled numerous interview and autograph requests. When the sea of red-clad fans finally parted, Elmer scooped her up in a big bear hug as Cornelia captured the moment on video. The Schmidt family, which also includes soccer-playing brothers Bruce and Spencer, watched all of Sophie’s Olympic games on TV together. “We were screaming the whole time,” Cornelia said with a chuckle. “They did their absolute best, and in my mind, they won gold. We can’t change the (semifinal) result, but they overcame it with grace. I’m very proud of them. “Abbotsford has supported her. All the girls soccer teams, all the parents, everybody is a part of this. They helped to bring her to this moment.”

Abbotsford’s Cascade Aerospace will become one of only two Lockheed Martinauthorized C-130 Heavy Maintenance Centers (HMCs) in the world. Lockheed Martin’s Rick Kirkland, vice-president of international business development, made the announcement Friday morning during a reception at the Abbotsford International Airport. “There is only one other company throughout the world that we have bestowed this authority (upon), and this will provide Cascade the ability to support the C-130J for the Canadian Forces, but also open up opportunities for the growing number of C-130J fleets around the world,” said Kirkland. Cascade Aerospace CEO David Schellenberg said, “We are privileged to have Lockheed Martin’s respect and credibility behind us, and to become one
of only two C-130 HMCs in the world. With more than 1,450 C-130s currently operating in 65 countries, and with Lockheed’s C-130J delivery backlog and strong order book, this new standing will significantly increase the international opportunities for Cascade Aerospace.” He added the new designation will “mean the sustainment and the growth of jobs” in Abbotsford. Cascade currently supports Canada’s new 17-aircraft C-130J fleet under a 20-year contract with Lockheed Martin, and provides fleet management services directly to the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) for its legacy C-130 Hercules. A large group of dignitaries attended the announcement, including Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman, MLAs Michael de Jong and John van Dongen and Abbotsford MP and Minister of International Trade Ed Fast. “The aerospace industry, as most of
you know, represents somewhere in the order of close to $7 billion worth of GDP … and represents close to $20 billion of revenues in Canada. It is the fifth largest industry sector in Canada and it supports somewhere in the area of 87,000 jobs,” said Fast. The previous day, Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, spoke at the 2012 Abbotsford Aerospace and Defence Expo. The expo was held at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre and brought together large international companies with small and mediumsized businesses from Western Canada. Jay Teichroeb, Abbotsford’s general manager of economic development, said the city has held events like this in the past, but now plans to make the trade show an annual event.

Acts of great courage The recent events in Wisconsin are almost beyond comprehension. A 40-year-old man who was bounced from the U.S. army for being drunk on duty – a white-power skinhead – walks into a Sikh temple near Milwaukee and starts shooting. Six people die. Then the killer kills himself. The gunman was quickly identified and the hunt for every available detail of his life was underway within hours of the tragedy. We now know a lot about him. With all that has been reported, we still don’t know exactly why he did what he did, and we may never find out. But his name and his history are not what need to be remembered. The name and life we should remember is that of 65-year-old gurdwara president Satwant Kaleka, a farmer from the Duggal village of India’s Patiala district, who moved to the U.S. in 1982 and helped found the temple. It was the unarmed Kaleka who
tackled the gunman at the door of the temple when the shooting started, suffering two ultimately fatal leg wounds. Kaleka delayed the killer’s entry by two minutes, giving others a chance to flee. Nor should we forget Oak Creek police Lt. Brian Murphy, who was shot nine times while tending to one of the wounded in the temple parking lot, then reportedly tried to wave off fellow officers when they came to his aid, insisting worshippers indoors needed their help more. We also need to remember 39-year-old Parkash Singh, a quiet, gentle man who served as granthi (priest) at the gurdwara for six years. And the others who died: brothers Sita Singh, 41, and Ranjit Singh, 49, Paramjit Kaur Toor, 41, and Suveg Singh, 84. The bravery of Kaleka and Murphy makes sense. Being a person of faith also makes sense. What the killer did was, by any definition, a senseless act. – Black Press

Other Hand It has often been said that subliminal imprinting creates many of our likes and dislikes, that it can be accused or applauded for how we become the people we are. Little did I know that my usual ‘don’t worry, be happy’ philosophy on life, my laid-back procrastinating lifestyle was actually a product of not necessarily my upbringing so much as where I was brought up. Or at least that’s my excuse, made rather pointedly tomorrow when the little towns in which I lived my formative years officially declare Aug. 15 “Relaxation Day.” The region now known by the touristoriented ‘Oceanside’ moniker is made up of the villages of Parksville and Qualicum Beach, joined together by French Creek (with, by the way, Whiskey Creek just up the road, which may
explain one of my other proclivities). It is now, apparently, home to the greatest concentration of seniors in the country. When I grew up there, you either became a logger or worked for pennies in the seasonal tourism industry. And as the population of the combined communities was less than 2,000 when I finished high school at QBSS, there weren’t a lot of jobs available at the best of times. Thus a mass exodus of youth to the bright lights of the city, the construction and industrial opportunities throughout the rest of the province or to higher education that you hoped would lead to a reliable paycheque. So while the various cohorts of youth left the villages and their exceptional strands of sand, seniors and others seeking the ‘relaxed life’ moved in. It’s rare that I return to Vancouver Island – my home for two-thirds of my life has been the Fraser Valley – yet I still have a lasting attachment relating mainly to the cemetery of the historic log church St. Anne’s at French Creek wherein lie the remains of generations of my family dating back to my greatgrandfather, who expired in the vicin-
ity around 1916. However, family history aside, the communities that sprang up adjacent to the magnificent beaches in the late 1800s have always been known for their haven-like attraction, abetted no doubt by the fact that the area only gets about

And maybe that’s why there aren’t so many families flocking to the region. Not much in the way of work, few amenities for organized sports, and major shopping centres a half hour drive away. But wow, does the area attract the
oldsters – so much so that the official stance of the village councils is not only recognition, but declaration, of the need to relax. Maybe that is something, thanks to our city council, which has been missing in my life these last few years. As the mayor of Qualicum Beach is quoted as saying, your doctor doesn’t tell you to “make sure stress is a big part of your daily routine.” How refreshing … rather than threatening residents with draconian bylaws, with piling rules upon rules at ever-increasing tax rates, there is a political philosophy in the sleepy little burgs of east coast Vancouver Island that urges its citizens to take it easy, to relax, and at the same time have some fun doing it. Perhaps it wouldn’t be a bad idea for politicians on this side of Georgia Strait to share some of those thoughts with their political brethren/sisteren in laid-back Oceanside. At least then I’d be able to revert to my intrinsic heritage of a relaxed, couldn’t-care-less slacker.

Difficult to believe in justice system Once a g ain, Abbotsford parents are reminded that when we are at the park or the pool, or simply watching our children play outside, we don’t just have to watch for hazards and little accidents; we have to watch for child rapists. Oh, I know the politically correct term is “sex offender,” but let’s get real and call them what they really
are. Don Bakker was convicted of sex crimes against seven young girls and three sextrade workers. And he videoed it. And he got one year in prison per victim. And now he is free. Meanwhile, each of these young girls has been given a life sentence of pain and horror and they will never be
free. How do we call this justice? On the other hand, the court is considering calling the man who abducted the little boy and then returned him four days later unharmed, a dangerous offender (which would net him
a life sentence). There is no consistency here. I’ll be honest, I am sorely tempted to call in and say that I saw him at a park, just to get him off the streets. I won’t do it, of course, as I value honesty greatly. But shame on
our “justice” system for failing to uphold the value of justice, for failing to protect the most innocent in our society. I am deeply disturbed. Sherilyn Klassen

There doesn’t appear to be much concern for trees at the Hazelwood Cemetery. Since last winter, we have watched several very large trees, along with large flowering shrubs, being removed. The very tall conifers that were cut down last winter apparently were in the way of the next phase of developing the cemetery. The lovely shrubs beneath them were bulldozed without even an effort of relocating them being made. A couple days ago, we noticed that several more trees near the building were cut down. I suppose that trees which appear to have been planted at least 40 years ago have no historical (or environmental) relevance, unlike those on rural private property. Valorie Hill

When a group of people spends an extended amount of time together, a unique culture – complete with its own relics and rituals – can develop. Such is the case with the Yard Dogs, an Abbotsford men’s fastpitch team with a core membership that dates back almost two decades. Six players on the squad – Brad Avery, Geoff Dodson, Eric Reisinger, Tim Folster, Josh Wiens and John Perlinger – have been teammates since peewee ball back when they were 12 years old. Bob Avery, Brad’s dad, has been the coach almost the whole way along. Over the years, the team has developed a few quirky traditions which seem to indicate a deep bond. But, as is often the case with boys, these protocols basically amount to an institutionalized form of chops-busting.

First, there’s the dog bone – a three-foot-long piece of wood carved in the shape of Fido’s favourite treat. It sits in the dugout during every Yard Dogs game, and after the last out is made, the players and coaching staff retreat to a local pub to assess fines accrued. Each player’s fine total is tracked on the bone, written in black marker. Fines are earned for all manner of miscues.
Drop a fly ball, you owe a buck. Commit “Dog on Dog” violence – being overly abrasive towards a teammate – and it’s another buck. Striking out three times in a game, known as a Golden Sombrero, will cost you five bucks. “And rookies aren’t allowed to touch the bone – that’s also a fine,” Folster said with a chuckle. “We’ll set it up behind them and try to do stupid stuff to get them to touch it. The City of Abbotsford will hold a community meeting to consult with the public on a proposal to amend the City’s Of¿cial Community Plan (OCP), which would change the land use designation of the subject properties from Urban Residential to Commercial. This amendment is necessary in conjunction with a proposal to rezone the subject properties from One Unit Urban Residential Zone (RS3) and Gas Station Commercial Zone (CGS) to Comprehensive Development Zone to permit the development of a sixstorey mixed-use building with approximately 922 sq. m. It’s really comfortable and everybody falls into their role.” Whether it’s because of, or in spite of, all their shenanigans, the Yard Dogs are an accomplished team. They’ve won the last three Fraser Valley Men’s Fastball League titles, and they were victorious at B.C. provincials last month. They’re looking to add a Western Canadian Senior B Championship to that list, and they have a chance to do it at home this week. Exhibition Park’s four ball diamonds will play host to the tournament Aug. 16-19, bringing together eight men’s and eight women’s teams from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. “We’ve said from the beginning that we had three to win – the Fraser Valley, the provincials and Westerns,” Folster noted. “We’re looking for one more.” Each team plays a six-game modified round robin, culminating with the men’s and women’s finals at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Heat set in net after Dance Studio for Rent signing Taylor, Brust In the heart of historic downtown Abbotsford The Abbotsford Heat solidified their goaltending situation last week, signing Danny Taylor and Barry Brust to one-year AHL contracts. Taylor joined the Heat midway through last season, and made the most of his opportunity. The 26-year-old finished the regular season with a 17-10-3 record and a trio of top-10 stats: shutouts (five, fifth in the AHL), goals against average (2.29, eighth), and save percentage (.924, ninth). Taylor also carried the load for the Heat in the playoffs, backstopping the team to the second round. Brust is a newcomer to the organization – he’s returning to North America after spending
last season in Germany with the Straubing Tigers. The 29-year-old native of Swan River, Man., has a track record of success at the AHL level. In 2010-11 with the Binghamton Senators, he went 29-19-1-2 with seven shutouts during the regular season. The Senators would go on to win the Calder Cup, though Brust saw limited playoff action as top prospect Robin Lehner took over as the No. 1 keeper. With Taylor and Brust in the fold, and Leland Irving agreeing to a two-way contract last month, the Heat and their NHL parent Calgary Flames now boast solid organizational depth in the crease.

The Friends of the MSA Centennial Library are trying to save the old building. The proposal is to turn the facility, located at 33660 South Fraser Way, into a community arts centre and cultural hub. The old library will soon shut down, in favor of the public/school library being constructed as part of the new Abbotsford Senior Secondary school. “To re-purpose a building like the MSA Library does not happen very often,” said Ken Wuschke, spokesperson for the group. “And to take a building that has been an essential part of Abbotsford’s cultural scene for the past 45 years and give it another purpose for the arts is an incredible opportunity.” Built as a community project for the 1967 celebration of Canada’s Confederation, the MSA Library was a cutting edge project for its day. Wuschke said in 1967 the public raised funds
and community groups like Rotary, Kinsmen, and Lions worked together to complete the project. “It is a building built by the people of Abbotsford for all to enjoy.” The group was scheduled to make a presentation before council yesterday (Monday) inquiring about the future of the library, which the group worries will be demolished, although city hall has said it has no plans to do so. “What heritage will surround us if we keep destroying Abbotsford’s iconic buildings like the MSA Centennial Library?” asked Dorothy van der Ree, executive director of the MSA Museum Society. The group is working with the Abbotsford Arts Council to create a new arts centre. The present facility, Kariton House, is 870 square feet, while the main floor of the MSA Library is 3,600 square feet – four times the space.

Officer nabs bank robber
A quick-thinking undercover police officer nabbed a robbery suspect on Friday afternoon just as the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) was receiving details on the incident. The officer had seen the man removing his jacket as he was running from the bank towards a taxi, and he broadcast his observations over his police radio. The officer stopped the cab after it drove away, and detained the man and a woman who were in the vehicle. Const. Ian MacDonald said the 22-year-old male suspect had apparently entered a bank in the 31900 block of South Fraser Way at about 4 p.m., approached a teller, and handed over a note demanding cash. He also implied that he had a weapon. The suspect is well-known to Abbotsford Police and was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for breaching his probation.

Suspected impaired driver hits police cruiser
The theft of a cooler early Thursday morning in Abbotsford led
to a collision with an unmarked police vehicle and charges being

said the incident began at about 3 a.m., when a resident reported that a cooler had been stolen by possibly three people from his neighbour’s property in the vicinity of Marshall and Gladwin roads, and the culprits had fled in a dark Chrysler 300. About 45 minutes later, an Abbotsford
Police supervisor in an unmarked police SUV spotted a vehicle matching the description in the downtown core. The officer saw the car quickly back out of a parking stall, and followed it as it headed north on Montrose Avenue and east on George Ferguson Way,
where a train was blocking the road. MacDonald said the driver then made an abrupt U-turn and collided head-on with the police car as it was turning onto George Ferguson. The 24-year-old male driver, who was the only occupant in the car at the time,
was suspected to be impaired, but refused to provide a breath sample, MacDonald said. The man’s driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days, the car was impounded for 30 days, and a criminal charge of dangerous driving has been recommended.

Brian passed away peacefully on August 1, 2012 at Vancouver General Hospital, surrounded by his family. Brian was a devoted husband, father, brother and uncle. He is survived by his loving wife Joanne; sons, Stan (Lavonne), Scott (Tessa); daughters, Andrea, Katrina (Trevor); step daughters, Meagan, Kim (Jack), Amy (Dale), Sara (Robb); grandchildren, Jamie, Aaron, Hughie, Cecelia, Esteban, Mateo, Chantal, Natasha, Frances, Riley, Janek, Kaman and Roenik. He is also survived by his brother Cliff (Kathy); nephew Cliff and niece, Kalea; as well as his step mom Lee Nokleby, mother-in-law, Violet Pinning, Heather Grant (mother of his children) and other cherished family including his aunts, Marcella and Lois. Brian was born in Hardisty, Alberta and as a young boy moved to Smithers, BC. His post secondary education took him to the University of Victoria where he received a degree in Education. Later he received a Masters of Education from the University of Washington. Brian was an Educator and retired from the Abbotsford School District in 2001. His life was of service. He was a former Rotarian, minor hockey coach, he served on the boards at Cultus Lake Memorial Church, Sunshine Valley Executive and was elected Cultus Lake Commissioner from 2008-2001 where he served as Chairman. Brian had many hobbies but fishing was his passion. Two of his favourite destinations were Puerto Vallarta, Mexico where he and Joanne vacationed each winter, as well as their cabin by the river in Sunshine Valley, Hope. Brian also enjoyed cooking and entertaining. He loved life and was a very generous person. Even in death his generosity continued. Brian donated his eyes and eight recipients will benefit from them, two of which will receive the gift of sight. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Brian’s honor to either Salvation Army Church, Chilliwack or The Heart and Stroke Foundation. A funeral service was held August 8th at 2:00pm at the Salvation Army Church, Chilliwack. A reception followed at Evergreen hall.

POLYWKAN Stella It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Stella passed away suddenly on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at her residence at Menno Care Home in Abbotsford, BC at the age of 86. Mom was a kind, loving and caring person. Her greatest joy was her children, grandchildren, and especially her greatgrandchildren who held a very special place in her heart. Mom had a love for gardening and took great pride in tending to her vegetables and flowers. Mom was known for her wonderful gift of cooking and was always happy to share her favourite foods with her family and friends. She loved to make all the traditional Ukrainian dishes especially at Christmas and Easter. Stella was predeceased by her loving husband John in 2010. She is survived by her children Elaine (Doug) of Abbotsford, Bob (Marilyn) of Victoria, Joan (Graham) of Abbotsford and Jim of Abbotsford, grandchildren Dave (Jodi), Mike, Brian (Alix), Colin (Pauline), Kimberly (Adam), Shelly, Janice and Lanie, great-grandchildren Brandon, Justin, Jessica, Tyler, Ryan, Janie, Madison, Parker, Karlee and Hailey.
