“Maybe in a lot of people’s cases, it’s just a matter of getting used to our silliness.”

For TSN personalities Jay Onrait and Dan O’Toole, humour is a regular part of their highlight pack. Sports viewers across Canada have come to expect those prepared comedic skits every time they watch the weekday evening edition of SportsCentre. But it isn’t all practice, as spontaneous comments result in some of the pair’s finest seconds on air. “The same things make us laugh so that’s one of the keys and the other thing is we both try not to lose it on the show,” O’Toole says. “When one of us does lose it, that’s what makes it our favourite moments, at least mine because I can’t control myself because I’m laughing too much.” O’Toole says that sometimes they don’t even discuss the highlights until they run them on SportsCentre. He compares those interactions with what viewers would talk about at the same time. “We have conversations that you’d have with your buddies, on the couch, having a beer, watching the show. But we’re sitting at a desk having that conversation, minus the beer.” Onrait and O’Toole take a goofy, slapstick brand of humour into their programs. The style has made them successful, but also targets for a small pool of people who find their comedy crude and offensive. Criticism comes with the territory of being a celebrity. “You can get your highlights on the Internet now, there are a million places you can get your sports information,” Onrait says. “It’s not like we’re leaving you high and dry, you can go elsewhere.” But the duo has grown on people. Onrait has heard of supporters of their program who didn’t enjoy it at first.
PRINCE GEORGE VISIT The two sportscasters will be in Prince George as special guests of the third annual Y Champions Hockey Weekend on Sept. 7 and 8. Dave Bidini will also attend the Family YMCA of Prince George event. Bidini is a hockey fan, hockey player and award-winning writer and filmmaker. In addition to the hockey tournament, the weekend includes a keynote banquet, the Canadian Tire Hockey School and Bidini Band concert at Shooters Pub downtown. Bidini will emcee the banquet, with comedic entertainment provided by Onrait and O’Toole. “I think I get to coach one of the Ph o to s ub mitte d teams,” O’Toole says. “Just so you TSN SportsCentre hosts Jay Onrait, left, and Dan O’Toole will be guests for the third annual Y know, if you get me as a coach, Champions Hockey Weekend on Sept. 7 and 8. Wow, that was fast.’” One of her larger drawings, Technical Expedition, is part of the Two Rivers exhibit, and Exner took some time to explain some of the details of the work. “The rabbit running around is a tribute to Eduardo Kec, who genetically produced a fluorescent green rabbit. I started thinking about what some of the other bunnies looked like that he was working on.” There are also tributes to Gauguin and Michelangelo in the work, with Adam from the Sistine Chapel stretching a hand not

When Twyla Exner moved to a bigger city, she decided to change her art medium. “I had been working with willow,” Exner said July 5, during an artist’s talk before the opening of her exhibit, Entangled, at Two Rivers Gallery, “but I found it difficult to get the detail I wanted weaving with willow. “When I moved to Saskatoon, I wanted something more representative of my urban surroundings. Enter telephone cable – lots of telephone cable. “I was able to get the cable free from SaskTel after it had been used. Here’s a tip if you want to use telephone cable: Get the stuff in the grey wrapper. The black wrappers have oil inside and it’s really messy. “Grey is the way to go.” Part of her artist’s talk showed her progression in the use of cable. “This was my first piece,” she said of one slide, called Reprogress. “I had a solid centre and wrapped the cable around it. “When I had to leave my apartment, I found an 800pound sculpture is not very practical.” There was a happy ending, though. “Almost all the wire was re-used into other work, including some of the ones here in the exhibit.” Exner’s works use the cable to show how technology is weaving its way into every facet of modern life. It’s a theme she has pursued for several years, and she has branched out from telephone cables. “When I was doing my Master’s in Montreal, they wanted me to start experimenting with other forms. I found drawing very immediate, especially after cable weaving. “With drawing,
sculptural and pictorial, drawing on computers and their “innards”, it was something of a surprise to find Exner is not a “geek”. “I do not have any sort of background with computers. I’m actually not very good friends with them. “That’s the dichotomy of my

Northern Health making more Connections ALLAN WISHART allanw@pgfreepress.com
Northern Health is making more Connections across the north in 2012. Regional manager for external business Reina Pharness says they have seen a jump in the number of people using the Connections bus service to travel to and from medical services. “We’ve seen about a 14 per cent increase this year over last year,” she
says. “It’s been pretty consistent from the start of the year, with no real spikes.” While ridership is up, Pharness says it hasn’t meant any changes to the service, which runs from Prince George to Prince Rupert, Prince George to Valemount and Fort St. John, and Prince George to Vancouver, with a number of smaller routes as well. “We’re watching it closely, but we haven’t
had to increase the number of buses or change any routes.” Pharness doesn’t have specific figures for where the increased ridership is coming from, but, “I suspect in the northwest, there would be a significant increase.” She says that could be due to a number of causes. “Over the past year, we’ve done a lot of promoting of the service in the area, so I think

there’s been an increase in awareness. “We also get good word of mouth from people who use the service and tell their friends how well it works.” With the BC Cancer Agency Centre for the North and Kordyban Lodge scheduled for completion in November, Pharness says Connections is talking with the agency. “We’re working with them to meet the transportation needs of people who will be coming here for both the centre and the lodge. “We anticipate a small increase in ridership.” Dave Christie, the regional manager for Diversified Transportation, which operates the Connections buses, says the service has definitely grown. “In 2006, we had about 6,000 passengers. We’ve more than doubled that now.” The Connections buses travel more than 1.6 million kilometres a year, serving more than 35 communities in the Northern Health region.

The delivery from Northern Health in Prince George to a medical facility on the run to Prince Rupert is a standard service, along with transporting patients to and from Prince George. “We replace the buses every couple of years to keep them efficient. The whole system is designed to keep costs down for everyone.” Driver Neil Taylor was getting ready Friday morning to make the run to Prince Rupert. “There’s 11 runs in total, and we rotate through them in a sixweek schedule.” He says after six years with the service, “you recognize clients who make a lot of trips. Stampeders gallop into city for PGX ALLAN WISHART

In a music business where so often we hear of egos clashing, talking to Rich Dodson is a breath of fresh air. Dodson, along with Kim Berly and Ronnie King, are the Stampeders, and they’re bringing their catalogue of hits to the Prince George Exhibition on Aug. 9. All three of the band members sing lead on some songs, and all three write music, so you would figure each of them would jealously guard his own compositions for his own singing parts. Not so, Dodson says. “I liked Kim’s delivery and approach, so some of the songs that I wrote were written for him to sing. We were one of those bands where the drummer did most of the vocals. While Berly was on drums from day one, Dodson and King had to have a major intellectual discussion over which of them would play bass at one point. “We were a sixpiece band, he says on the phone from his home in Toronto, “and then the three older guys left. So Ronnie and I had to decide who would learn bass and who would stay on guitar. “So we flipped a coin. Actually, he says, while King lost the

Dodson knows this isn’t the first time they’ve played Prince George. “I was trying to remember the last time we were out that way. I think we did a show with Andre Gagnon, the impressionist, at the big arena there. “We’re always landing in Prince George on our way to shows in places like Terrace or Smithers, though. The Stampeders try to keep their schedule down to about 30 or 40 shows a year now, but “extra shows keep popping in, Dodson admits.
When you’ve played together a s a trio for as long as these guys have, it doesn’t make long to get things back together. “Kim and Ronny are still both doing a fair bit of writing. I sort of start stuff and then throw it in a box to finish it later. But we still usually have a couple of new songs in the set each year. The set list, he says, as been honed over the years. “We play all the hits and some new tunes, but we’ve also tried to set it up so it works almost like a stage show, with a big explosion at the end. One of the songs fans expect to hear is the Stampeders’ cover of Hit The
