Trail blazers celebrated at museum J.R. Rardon Black Press A generation ago, women fought perception, resentment and harassment to earn roles in North Vancouver Island’s timber industry. Getting a spot in the forestry-dominated Port McNeill Museum proved much easier. “I’m thrilled to have this exhibit here,” said Rupa Paul, manager and guide at Port McNeill and District Museum, as she showed
off the new History of Women in the Forest Industry exhibit in a room off the building’s main show floor. The exhibit was conceived and spearheaded by former log scaler Jenny Durke of Port McNeill. In addition to gathering numerous photos and historical records, Durke enlisted the aid of North Island videographer Rob Marty to compile a 20-minute video for the exhibit. The video plays on a wide-screen television
in the exhibit room of the two-story, log structure, which originally housed the Port McNeill Visitor’s Centre. It features interviews both with retired scalers and women currently working at sites like the Beaver Cove dryland sort and the WFP dry-land sort in Port McNeill. “When I started doing research for this project I found almost nothing available to show what roles women played in the industry,”

House Productions, spent nearly three months together gathering footage and interviewing the subjects. What evolves is a story of the gradual, positive changes that led to full acceptance and favourable working conditions for the women who broke the barrier into a maledominated industry. Durke, who ultimately left the job after suffering a knee injury, confirmed she underwent some harassment when she entered the industry, but said those instances were few and far between. Durke had some initial trepidation about approaching the other women for on-camera interviews, and was unsure how they would respond. Not only did they enthusiastically agree, but WFP allowed Marty to record the interviews at the job site. The exhibit fits neatly at the museum, which has been open nearly 14 years.

Some nice Chinooks are being caught on the west coast in the Nootka Sound area. Tyee are coming in with lots of Chinooks. In the month of August, anglers are trying to get the big one. They are having good success fishing in the afternoon and early evening. Moutcha Bay is fishing well and this is a busy spot for fishing s g on the west coast. In the Campbell River area, fishing has been steadily getting better for Chinooks. The average weight is anywhere from 9 to 23 pounds. On July 31, Painters Lodge saw 26 fish come in that day. Linda Stevens caught a 23 lb. Chinook, Harry Hammer’s Laurie Campbell,Victoria Chinook was 22lbs. and Joanna Bostock and Neil Quan’s came in at 13lbs. Here in the north, this is the time of year to fish the rivers for pinks or head to the saltwater for Chinook and Coho. On a daily basis, the Discovery Pier is loaded with locals and tourists and anglers visiting from all over the world. Lots of pinks and some bottom fish are being caught. Mel Adams caught his 28 pound Chinook on April 20th and remains the leader on the scoreboard the Pier. The pinks were plentiful at the end of July in the Eve and Salmon River, Campbell River is fishing well for pinks as indicated by the number of anglers present each day. Green Jacob Zask, Los Angeles, Calif and Blue flies are working well on the fly and the ever popular pink is a standard color for flies and lures. The city of Campbell River will be hosting an anniversary party on the Pier, Sunday, August 12, from 10 am to 2 p.m. The kids fishing derby runs from 9 to noon. On September 22, another free fishing derby will be held at Roberts Lake. There will be prizes, hotdogs and chili supplied by Lorna Duncan. I will be fishing and helping Roberts Lake put on this event.
