Tansi, my name is Christa Sampson-Waskewitch and my tribal ancestry is Yakima Confederation and Plains Cree. I have been taught and brought up with strong traditional values from my grandparents, uncles and aunts on both sides of my family. Being crowned for Miss Kamloopa Princess 2011-2012 has been a tremendous honor. Carrying the title has given a lot of insight of not only myself as a youth, but it has also taught Sampsonme respect of who I am as a Waskewitch First Nations youth of Canada. Being a youth has its struggles of peers my age. I am proud to say that I am alcohol/drug free and I want to set a good example not only for my siblings but also for our youth. “Our youth can achieve anything without any substance abuse, it is okay to walk our cultural/traditional path and not to worry on any judgement.” This past year, I have travelled to big powwow celebrations to represent the Kamloopa people with dignity and respect.
