An unoccupied townhouse unit on Sappers’ Way in Sardis went up in flames early Tuesday morning, and a nearby four-unit complex was evacuated as a safety precaution. Assistant Fire Chief Jim MacDonald said firefighters were able to get a handle on the fire “relatively easy,” but the three adjoining units were evacuated in case the flames spread. “We didn’t want to take any chances with lives,” he said. The evacuated residents were able to return to their homes, but the people living in the fire unit will have to wait because of “significant” fire damage. Continued: FIRE/ p6

Dr. Ralph Jones, lead physician of the Chilliwack Division of Family Practice, a non-profit society representing family physicians, also took part in the panel

He did not criticize the quality of home care support in Chilliwack, but did suggest the system needs a “redesign” to ensure all patient needs, including transportation and motivation, are looked after when patients return home from hospital. The FHA insists that rehab patients will have better health outcomes by returning home, rather than staying in the hospital unit. Pearson agreed, but only if there are home support services in place. “Home is best when it makes sense and can be supported,” she

said, but it is a “hollow” program if the government does not provide the funding. Johnson said home care and home support in Chilliwack “needs additional money.” The BC Liberal government earmarked $135 million in its last budget as an “incentive for builders and developers,” he said. “That money could have gone to home support.” He said the FHA is under pressure “imposed by the BC government” to cut costs, “but sometimes the best economic decision ... is not the best health decision for an individual or a community.” Continued: HEALTH/ p4

Chilliwack was urged at a Tuesday night “town hall” meeting to push back against the pending closure of the rehab unit at Chilliwack General Hospital. Chilliwack-Hope MLA Gwen O’Mahony, who organized the meeting, gamely vowed to carry a call to cancel the closure until all the community’s concerns are addressed to Health Minister Mike de Jong. But the end of in-hospital rehab services in Chilliwack — which was deemed important enough by the Fraser Health Authority
to open the $2.5-million unit six years ago — seems final. Scott Brolin, the FHA’s director of rehabilitation services, told the Tuesday audience of about 80 that it’s expected no new patients will be admitted to the unit after the end of August. He agreed the plan to replace the unit with out-patient services and to send patients needing inhospital rehab to Abbotsford “did not roll out” as intended, but the FHA is committed to closing any service gaps for patients before the change is final, he said. However, it seems questionable that home care support services in Chilliwack, one of the main

Road closures expected for annual toad migration Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Juvenile Western toads could be on the move any time now in Ryder Lake above Chilliwack. Selective road closures on Elk View and Ryder Lake Road will be in place when the mass migration of dime-sized toads begins. “The migration hasn’t quite started yet. It’s hard to say exactly when,” said Suzie MacMillan of the Fraser Valley Conservancy. It’s usually sometime
between late July and the end of August. When the migration starts, closed signs will appear periodically at the bottom intersection of Ryder Lake and Elk View Roads to help cut down on vehicle traffic, thereby reducing the mortality rate of the threatened species. It’s one of three migrations involving six amphibians species in the area. Curious members of the public are being asked to kindly stay away from Ryder Lake for safety and
conservation reasons. “There’s no parking up there and no shoulders on the road, so we’re discouraging people who may want to run up there to take a look.” FVC started the road closures to encourage safe and natural crossings for the blue-listed toad a few years ago, after obtaining approval and cooperation from City of Chilliwack officials. It’s part of the FVC’s Amphibian Protection Program. New this year is a
Creating a ‘culture of safety’ on the mighty Fraser River Jennifer Feinberg The Progress It’s a chance to learn something vital about staying safe on the Fraser River. The first ever Celebration of Safety and Culture on the River is slated for Saturday, Aug. 11 at Island 22 in Chilliwack. It’s a day outdoors, tasting some salmon, meeting river users, and sharing cultural fishing practices. “Safety is a big part of the celebration, but it’s a twopronged approach,” said Rod Clapton of the Federation of B.C. Drift Fishers. “It’s also a demonstration of the spirit of cooperation that’s been achieved between local First Nations and the recreational fishing community,” Clapton is a member of the Fraser River Peacemakers, a local group working on creating a climate of mutual respect among users, as well as anticipating and avoiding any potential conflict on the river hotspots and areas of high use. “We’ve learned that we have to share the river. We’ve come to appreciate the constitutional rights of First Nations with regard to the fish, and they’re starting to appreciate that we’re not going to go away either.” It’s the first time a joint river-focused initiative like this one has ever come to fruition to his knowledge. More than 20 water safety, river or fish related groups will be represented.
“There has been a real buy-in, so let’s get out there, demonstrate we can get along, save a few lives and build for the future,” said Clapton. One way to save lives might be to promote the regular use of personal floatation devices. Numerous drownings every summer are reported along the mighty waterway, said Dave Barrett, president of the Fraser River Salmon Table Society. “The river is world-class with lovely scenery and mountains, but it’s also very dangerous.” Deadly in fact. The river event will see that topic tackled head on. The Salmon Table formed a subcommittee to look at river safety issues, with the goal of addressing why so many river stakeholders steadfastly avoid the use of personal floatation devices (PFDs) all together. “Nobody out here wears a bloody life jacket,” Barrett said with some frustration. One of the ideas from a focus group is a getting a custom designed PFD just for river users, with their unique needs and requirements in mind. There are stories of fishermen drowning after getting dragged out of the boat and into the water when the buckles or other parts of the PFDs get caught in a gill net. Todays 2morrow is not quitting, it’s growing. This week the Chilliwackbased youth political organization announced it would be merging with the national Canadian Youth Federation (CYF) in an effort to reach a wider range of youth. As a result Todays 2morrow will cease to exist effective immediately. “We are not giving up on our vision, we are simply becoming a better organization,” said 15-yearold William van Hoepen, founder of Todays 2morrow and new vice president of CYF. Todays 2morrow was started last year by van Hoepen and 17-year-old Maxwell Gardner (who’s since left the organization) in an effort to raise awareness and interest in politics amongst youth. The visionary teens, who attended every political rally and all-candidates meetings in the last civic election, were disappointed with the lack of youth interest in politics. They vowed, with Todays 2morrow, to do whatever they could to change that. In its first year Todays 2morrow attracted 30 members, mostly from Chilliwack. With the merger, it will now have a national presence that will include provincial boards in Newfoundland, Ontario, Alberta and B.C. Its membership will also grow to 190. “That’s a massive increase,” said new CYF director of intelligence, Phillip van Huigenbos, 16, of Chilliwack. Continued: YOUTH/ p7

“Your community needs to decide if there’s more you want to do about it,� Johnson said, adding that the community has a “right to consultation� just like union workers at the hospital. “We were informed of this decision, (but) we had no opportunity to influence the decision,� he said. The opportunity to influence a decision is
key to the definition of consultation, which the FHA did not do with hospital doctors, municipal leaders, or the community at large. Why that consultation never took place has never been clearly answered. Brolin tried to assure the audience that the FHA executive has learned from this experience, and sees “the need to involve folks� the next time an initiative like this
is introduced. “Next time isn’t good enough,� a member of the audience shouted. Dr. Jones, who told Brolin an apology the society received for the lack of consultation was “not accepted,� suggested the reason was either “incompetence or machiavellian tactics.� The Tuesday night meeting was the first public meeting since the closure was announced May 24.

News Gas station robbed

Chilliwack RCMP are looking for the lone male who robbed the Esso gas station on Young Road last Saturday morning. Police learned from a witness that a grey, oldermodel, four-door vehicle was seen leaving the gas station around the time of the 4:23 a.m. robbery. “The male suspect is described as wearing blue jeans with designs on the rear, and a black, tight jacket with a white shirt underneath,” RCMP Cpl. Len vanNieuwenhuizen said in a news release. He said a lone male entered the gas station at about 4:23 a.m., demanded money, and left with an undisclosed amount of cash. Police attended the scene and launched a perimeter ground search, but then learned from a witness that a vehicle was seen leaving the station at around the time of the robbery. The fire had travelled from the lower floor, breached the windows and entered into the living area. MacDonald said the unit on fire was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, but the other units were “relatively unscathed” probably due to building codes that prevented the spread of the fire. “It’s a testament to the way we build things that it didn’t spread as quickly,” he said.

Off loading expenses Fraser Health continues to insist the changes it’s making to Chilliwack hospital’s rehabilitation clinic will ultimately benefit the people it was created to help: patients and their families. However, the arguments failed to convince many at a town hall meeting organized by NDP MLA Gwen O’Mahony Tuesday night. (See story, front page.) Indeed, it looks more like a decision based on cutting costs – like so many made in health care these days. This should not come as a complete surprise. Cost-cutting is the narrative that has dominated our medical system for the past two decades. It’s the reason behind the regional approach to health care delivery: share services, consolidate resources and create efficiencies. But while that approach may work in Metro Vancouver, where centralizing services at another hospital may only result in a longer bus or skytrain ride, it’s a little different here. Chilliwack is 35 kilometres from Abbotsford, with no transit service. The result is an efficiency paid for by the very people the service is intended to help. And these are already vulnerable individuals – people who may be unable to work while they recover from their accident or illness. Their families, too, are affected because it is they who will assume many of the duties of the clinic as the program moves to a more home-based model. It has been a governing tenet of health care over the past few decades that home care is preferable to institutional care. Not only is it less expensive to operate, outcomes for patients demonstrably improve. The failing, however, has been in the provision of adequate resources in the community to support these individuals. Fraser Health apologized for the manner with which the rehab closure was handled. We hope that the execution of this “improved” service is more successful than its communication. Mario, Rossi and the road more travelled I blame Mario. It is his fault, the alarm that wakes me much too early on Saturday mornings. His fault, the (ahem) snug Lycra shorts I wear, the colourful jerseys I pull over my head. His fault, the countless hours and kilometres I spend on two skinny wheels. I also blame Rossi. Let me explain: Preparing to move a few years ago, my friend Mario Bartel, a photographer and reporter at the NewsLeader papers in Burnaby and New Westminster — and a hardcore cyclist — needed to get rid of some of his stuff. So he did what anyone would (not) do: He created a website and emailed the link to friends and acquaintances, who could then shop online for used Ikea furniture and other household items. Or, in my case, a blue, steelframed Kona mountain bike that had carried its owner up and down trails for years but had been

replaced with a newer model. With an eye to upgrading from a bike I had bought in the 1980s, I pointed and clicked to reserve that beast, an investment of a couple of hundred bucks in future fun and fitness. When I visited Mario to pick up my purchase, he mentioned he was also selling his old road bike, which he’d been using on his training machine and which he would Richard throw in for an extra DAL MONTE $50. That’s Rossi. Sleek, elegant tubular steel. Gleaming chrome forks. A hard, old leather seat. Italian. Mario had bought it more than 20 years earlier, when he was a university student, and just as it had grabbed him from the first ride, it spoke to me now. It spoke of packs of riders on
mountain roads and city streets in my family’s native northern Italy. It spoke of childhood freedom in East Van on my purple bike with the banana seat and sissy bar, and, later, my brother’s hand-me-down, Woodwards-bought 10-speed. It reminded me of the time, more than two decades earlier, when I heard someone talk about riding to Whistler and I had thought, “Wouldn’t that be cool?,” never thinking I would do it (I’ve done it). And it said one thing I immediately knew to be true: This is going to become an expensive habit. Still, cheapskate though I am, I was sold. And thus began the education of a roadie, another MAMIL (middleaged man in Lycra) among the hundreds you see on local roads any given weekend. Not that I was a two-wheeled newbie. I remember the precise moment, as a child, that I learned to ride without training wheels,
pushing off my neighbour David Andrews’ front steps and cruising down the sidewalk, the secret of balance suddenly revealed, a discovery that would yield hundreds of hours of fun with friends — Albert, Dave, Gary, Gary, Robbie, Mark, Bill — on the streets of our neighbourhood. Now, the carbon-fibre Cannondale that the Rossi begat is also the source of much recreation with riding buddies. First, there was Max, a friend and neighbour who let me slow him down on trail rides and road outings until I was usually able to keep up. Then came Hush, Ziv, Sumo, Detonator and Andrew. Mario, too. Each is better, stronger, faster than I. But when I struggle up a hill, which I usually do, I sometimes think of a story about my father that I learned only after Rossi entered my life, and only after my dad died: He was about 25 when he was preparing to emi-

grate from Italy and was working clearing brush in a town called Castello Tesino in the Dolomite Mountains. Word came to his family’s home that he was to attend a meeting about his emigration. His brother Silvano got on a bike and rode 50 km or so to alert him and to take over my dad’s job so he could take the bicicletta and ride back to attend the meeting that would propel him to Canada. I think of this story and I imagine him pedalling a heavy, old bike. I imagine the hairy switchbacks of the Dolomiti. I imagine a determined young man in dirty work clothes and worn boots pushing to his future. I imagine this ride as but one of many challenges before him. And I keep pedalling. Pipeline: What’s in it for B.C.? Re: Clark’s tough stand on pipeline earns praise, The Progress, July 31. How do we get our political leaders to develop an approach to energy that is in the best interests of British Columbia residents? Opposition to transporting raw tar sands bitumen through pipelines in British Columbia continues to grow. At issue are proposals for Enbridge’s Northern Gateway and Kinder-Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipelines. If you live in southwestern British Columbia you have good reason to be concerned. Several major pipeline accidents, in the last month alone, cast a shadow over these companies’ plans. Recently the Northern Gateway pipeline debate has taken a new turn—into an argument about money. Thus it has marginalized issues of water pollution, climate change and increasing cancer rates related to fossil fuels. Alberta Premier Redford and BC Premier Clark voiced seemingly opposing positions on the national stage. One might assume they were standing up for their respective electorates, but were they? One important fact has been ignored in the debate about pipelines through BC: Tar sands bitumen is already being shipped silently through Kinder Morgan’s 59-year-old Trans Mountain Pipeline from Edmonton, Alberta to Burnaby, BC. On learning this in April of this year, concerned residents of southwestern BC
formed the PIPE UP Network to educate themselves and their communities about tar sands pipelines. Here’s a summary of some of what we’ve learned: Tar sands bitumen (which must be diluted by volatile organic compounds to be shipped through pipelines) is not like conventional crude oil: It is more corrosive and more toxic. Pipelines operate under higher pressure and temperature when piping tar sands bitumen. We know that all pipelines have spills. Research shows that tar sands pipelines spill more frequently and put people and the environment at much greater risk than conventional oil pipelines (see NRDC report Tar Sands Safety Risks”). Spills of tar sands bitumen have a devastating impact on the economy and the environment— as evidenced by Enbridge’s 2010 spill into the Kalamazoo River in Michigan which negatively affected local business and tourism and drove down property values (see Cornell University’s Global Labor Institute report). Two years, and approximately $800 million later, it is still not completely cleaned up. Equally importantly, as economist Robyn Allan’s Economic Assessment of Northern Gateway” clearly shows, tar sands pipelines are “not an income generating growth opportunity” as the industry tries to claim. Her analysis concludes: “the value added potential of our
raw resources is sold-short on the international market. From a public policy standpoint, Canada is being outplayed.” Whenever there’s a spill, the corporations promise safer pipelines. Can they guarantee that there will be no spills? Their track record is poor. Should local people bear such a risk? Politicians are giving tax breaks to big, outdated, and dangerous, raw resource extraction corporations. Meanwhile, it seems that Canada is losing ground in developing clean energy. Should we not rethink fossil fuel subsidies and instead support job creation in clean energy and transportation industries? While export of tar sands bitumen may be profitable for some corporations, we cannot see any net economic benefit for residents of British Columbia (or, for that matter, for Canadians generally). Nor can we see how rapid expansion of the tar sands is in Canada’s best interests economically or environmentally. What is in the best interest of residents in British Columbia? ‘No more pipelines, no matter what’ The column in Tuesday’s Chilliwack Progress by Margaret Evans misses the point, in my opinion. Christy Clark has given the appearance of opposing the pipelines and the inherent risks involved to both inland and marine environments. In fact, she has covered herself, no matter what happens. If the pipeline is built and British Columbia receives our fair share of the pie, she will look good. If the pipeline is not built, she can claim
that it was her government’s opposition that did the trick. Either way, she wins. Either way, she can claim a victory for her party and their “determined stand.” All of the above is hogwash. The pipeline, as it is proposed, will run through some of the most pristine wilderness on the planet. When a spill happens, it will be almost impossible for Enbridge to get to the spill and contain it. Considering their record, this will be a
disaster. We’re dealing with the Keystone Cops here, and, folks, it isn’t a matter of if there will be a spill, but when. Remember, if it can happen, it will. Then the pipeline will be used to load supertankers, up to 400 a year, again in some of the most pristine and vulnerable coastline on the planet. When the oil spill happens, not if but when, it will be far larger and far more disastrous that the Exxon Valdez was. Again, if it can happen, it will.
Christy and her band of merry politicians should be fighting to prevent any such pipeline from coming onto British Columbia soil, no matter how many promises are made by Enbridge, Alberta and the Feds. She should stop playing politics and start working for the benefit of British Columbians, not the Liberal Party. No more pipelines, no matter what. No more tankers, no matter what. Jerry Riches

West 49’s annual LRN2SK8 is back at Cottonwood Mall this Friday. News Water rates going under the microscope Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Chilliwack is seeking a consultant to review its water rates to see if a change could lead to more effective water conservation. City officials issued a request for expressions of interest for engineering services to conduct a $70,000 study. In the city’s documents for the project, it states the water rates have not been restructured for “many years.” “Water rate restructuring has been identified as one of the effective water conservation measures in the City’s

water conservation plan.” It implemented a water conservation program to control high summer peaks arising from capacity limitations in the Sardis-Vedder aquifer. The objective of the study would be to review existing water rates, and conduct a rate study to determine the revenue requirements including capital budgeting, cost of service study to equitably allocate the revenue requirements between the various customer classes, and develop a suitable rate design. “Twenty-five or 30 years ago we didn’t have a river fishery like this,” said Dave Moore, executive director of the Fraser River Salmon Table. “Today, look at all the access points. They’re not all developed but they’re fully used. So we have to work toward building a culture of river safety.” The process has been “exciting” to watch, Moore said, and the collaborative approach with a range of river users is clearly working. “We are moving away from the point where we have an aboriginal fishing community, a sport fishing community, and a commercial fishing community, and moving into a river fishing community. “It’s being built. You can see it in the agenda of the Peacemakers and with the river event. The work being done crosscuts all the politics on the Lower Fraser.” Celebration of Safety and Culture on the River, August 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Island 22 Regional Park. Free entry with no gate fees. It’s a family friendly event with displays, activities and demonstrations sponsored by Fraser Valley Regional District in cooperation with the Fraser River Peacemakers and local First Nations. Chilliwack Search and Rescue will be doing a demonstration and there’s a chance to take part in the Learn to Fish program. For more details email parks@fvrd.bc.ca.

Art of the Portrait on display now The Progress “Eclectic” is a word that’s perhaps overused when describing art shows, but for this one it may be apt. The Art of the Portrait is the latest offering by members of the Chilliwack Visual Artists Association in the Cultural Centre Gallery until August 25. For textile artist Judy Hurley, it’s the rich textures and colours that she loves.
When the opportunity came along to do a portrait for the show, she created two characters with three dimensional crocheted hats that she called, A Gal in a Hat, and A Guy in a Cap. Both faces are set in a backdrop made from an old tapestry from the 1980s that has an antique look. “I thought it was a challenge to do something fun.” She used all kinds of techniques to get different effects, like steaming the
fabric to alter the look. As a textile artist, she works with fabric, thread and beads. “I use anything I can find that can be sewn down,” she says. Her background was in textiles and fashion, as head of fashion at Kwantlen and UFV, until she retired in 2005. “People say I should put my work under glass, but I think the tactile aspect is important.” She doesn’t even mind

if people want to reach out and touch her work, which of course is not always the case for most art exhibitors. “It doesn’t bother me at all,” she said. “It’s about the mood of the moment and the experience. I say go ahead.” She’s aware the conservationist point of view is to avoid touching it to preserve the materials’ longevity and durability. “I say who cares.” The show offers a stun-

Water-saving tips for hot weather My preferred choice is always fir or hemlock bark mulch. Bark is a wonderful insulator, it looks great and makes a fine soil amendment. A covering of three to four inches around all your plant material will prevent a great deal of stress, especially for shallow-rooted plants like rhododendrons. Hedging cedars are very shallow rooted and will dry out quickly in a few days of intense heat, so use soaker hoses to alleviate this problem. A thorough watering is the most important stress-relieving factor for all the plants under the eaves of your home. Heat reflected off buildings can be a real challenge for plants, so please do not neglect both the sun and shade areas under the eaves. Here, too, I find soaker hoses and drip systems are, by far, the most efficient and thorough method of watering.
Remember too for all your veggies, annuals, perennial beds and containers, try to get in the habit of watering very thoroughly to make sure the roots and soil mass are moist down deep, not just on the surface. Water less frequently, but really soak the soil when you do water. Keep water off the leaves of tomatoes and potatoes for fear of blight and especially off cucumbers and squash to help prevent mildew. Lawn grasses are very resourceful. It is far better to water less frequently but when you do, water deeply to get the roots going deeper into the soil to find more moisture. If lawn grasses don’t get enough moisture, they will simply go dormant, coming back in autumn when the rains return. Recently laid turf and newly seeded lawns are another issue. They require moisture until their
roots are well enough established to withstand drought. For all plants, proper soil preparation is really the key. When you plant, make sure the planting hole is at least twice as wide and deep as the root ball and contains lots of organic matter to create an environment where plants can be self sustaining over the long haul. Plants need soil that both drains well and yet has the ability to retain moisture during long dry periods. Try to move away from overhead sprinklers and towards
root soaking systems. They are much more efficient and are great water conservers. It only makes sense to water where the plants are versus soaking everything! Don’t be fooled by wilted leaves and assume a plant is dry. Often heat stress causes wilt and the plant will bounce back in the cooler evening temperatures. Overwatering can cause root rot, something that happens all too frequently. With proper soil preparation, mulching and watering, all our garden plants should be able to withstand both heat and water restrictions. To conserve water, we all need to change the way we use water around our homes, even collecting it from our eave troughs when it does rain.

Often heat stress causes wilt but the plant will bounce back during the cooler evening temperatures, writes Brian Minter

After five months of cooler, wetter weather than I’ve ever seen before, we’re about to experience some record hot temperatures over this long weekend. It looks as though the weather will be great for swimming in pools and lakes and for barbecues, and as nice as this may be, dry hot weather can be tough on our plants. Sudden heat and soaring temperatures create a demand for moisture that cannot always be met on short notice by the root systems of many plants. The result is burnt blossoms, damaged foliage and hard, stunted growth. Fortunately, there are ways of minimizing the problems caused by a sudden hot spell. The most immediate relief for plants is a thorough, deep watering. It is best to do this early in the morning when the plants will make the greatest use of the water. Watering in the evening wastes water because plants simply transpire valuable moisture away. The other huge issue is where to water. Soaker hoses around the perimeter of all trees and shrubs is the most effective way to water. A little water is worse than no water. When you water, saturate the soil deeply where the roots are to keep them going downward instead of upward in an effort to capture what little moisture there is. The next most important task is to mulch many of your trees and shrubs with suitable material. You should be looking for something that is a good insulator, can eventually be worked into the soil and has an attractive appearance. Garden compost is fine if it is well broken down, but its appearance is not always the best, especially when it dries out. Manures are also fine, but remember that they are slightly on the alkaline side and can cause problems with your acid-loving plants like rhododendrons and camellias. If you use manures, be sure they have been composted for at least six months. Grass clippings are quite suitable in the short run but once dried out, they tend to look rather shabby.

Young gun hopes for podium placing Ten-year-old racing phenom Jake Hayes headlines the field at the Parts Canada Canadian Nationals Mini Roadracing Championship, coming to Chilliwack’s Greg Moore Raceway this weekend. Riders from across Western Canada will tackle the track in several different classes, ranging from youth to formula super-sport. Hayes is eligible to race in five classes, on two bikes. The youngster will be going up against much older opponents, and if past history is a guide he’s no long shot to win. Rules were changed this year to allow Hayes to compete against adults. He’s been doing so at the regional level, and has silenced the doubters by earning a podium finish in just about every race he’s entered.
Hayes racked up a first place and two third place finishes at a regional event in midJuly and believes he can do the same against a much tougher field. Dad Norm has full faith in Jake’s abilities, but knows the kid faces a tall task. “He is still only fourfoot-four and a whopping 49 pounds, and these bikes are not only big but extremely fast and powerful and a lot of work to handle,” he said. “After a race, Jake is usually exhausted because he is so small and he loses lots of fluids.” Hayes will be riding a sleek factory Honda NSF100 (the only one in Canada) as well as an extremely fast custombuilt two-stroke KTM (described by Norm as a chainsaw on wheels). Hayes rode in the youth class last year, winning by a whopping 30 seconds. He’ll watch that race from the pits this year. His primary competition in the Spec Supersport class will come from Vancouver’s Eric Hung. Hung leads the season standings by 10
points over secondplace Hayes. You can see a video of Hung online at http://vimeo. com/40133967 Steve Latulippe, a local corrections worker, will be trying to beat Hayes in the Spec Supersport class, and is likely to race in the Spec Thunder class as well. RCMP officer Steve Martin is another local to watch in Spec Thunder, a division loaded with Chilliwack talent. Other locals in that division are Jim Van Winkle, Doug Alton and Bruce Matthews. Steve Martin’s wife Bonnie will compete in the women’s division. In her first year of racing, she’s put up 12 points to sit fourth in the overall standings. The two days of racing (Saturday and Sunday) are free to attend. Action starts at 10 a.m. both days, starting with qualifying runs. Baseball bash at Fairfield Chilliwack Minor Baseball hosts the midget AAA and peewee AA Provincial Championships Aug. 2-6 at the Fairfield Island diamonds. British Columbia’s best ball players, 10 teams from the peewee AA level and eight from the midget AAA level, will be competing in a minimum of 38 games over
the weekend. Games start at 9 a.m. on day one. The opening ceremonies take place at 6 p.m. at diamond D, including several special guests and sponsored by HUB International Barton Insurance. The opening ceremonies will be followed by a barbecue dinner for players and coaches, sponsored by Fraser Valley Meats. A skills competition for peewee players, sponsored by Cheam Sports, will take place at 8 p.m. on diamond B.

Former Spartan gets Olympic bronze Former Chilliwack Spartan Swim Club member Brent Hayden reached the podium Wednesday, winning bronze at the 2012 London Summer Olympics. Hayden captured the first Olympic medal of his career in the 100 metre men’s freestyle, finishing with a time of 47.80 seconds. Nathan Adrian of the United States took gold in 47.52s with pre-race favourite James James Magnussen (Australia) finishing second. Hayden, who is set to be married in nine days, earned redemption four years after a disappointing performance at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics left him off the podium. This time he wasn’t to be denied. Battling through pain in the last 25
metres, Hayden was all smiles at the finish line. His final time was a mere .004ths of a second better than London’s Yannick Agnel, a two time gold medalist who had to settle for fourth. Hayden has a history of success in this race. The 28-year-old shared the world title in 2007 (with Italy’s Filippo Magnini), was a silver medalist in 2008 and is the Canadian record holder in 50, 100 and 200m freestyle, both short and long course. Can young Huskers beat the Broncos? Circuit success The Chilliwack Huskers try to get the 2012 BC Football Conference season off to a winning start when they visit the Kamloops Broncos Sunday afternoon. The Huskers invade Hilltop Stadium for a 4 p.m. start, playing their first regular season game under new head coach Tyson St. James. The Huskers are trying to turn the page on a preseason meltdown last Saturday, a 70-0 loss to the Langley Rams in
Langley. The game was ugly from start to finish, but St. James believes the team took something away from it. “We got our first taste of on-field competition and found lots to work on,” he said. “Our group is young and willing. They will see where they made mistakes and correct.” This year’s Huskers are indeed young, with only one player (Travis Mackie) in his final year of junior football eligibility.
How quickly they come together as a team will tell the story of how well they do. “This is a process, and I believe in our coaches and players,” St. James noted. “Nothing that is good comes easy or quickly, but we will get better every week.” Chilliwack lost twice to the Broncos last year, dropping their home opener 37-14 and then
the season finale 29-13. Kamloops is a team the Huskers need to beat if they want to be taken seriously. “We are preparing our young men to win with our brand of Husker Football,” St. James said when asked if Sunday’s clash was a potential statement game. “It is important our group plays each game with effort, pas-

Circuit training allows you to work your aerobic system while simultaneously building strength, writes Paul Nicolls The Chilliwack Chiefs are done for the season, but assistant coach Paul Nicolls remains very busy. In his latest bi-weekly column, the Xceed Training owner/operator talks about the potential benefits of circuit-training. Circuit training is a combination of highintensity aerobics and resistance. It is an essential component of off-ice training that we use with the Chilliwack Chiefs. The circuit training our team employs consists of six to 10 strength exercises that are completed in succession. Each exercise is performed for a specific number of repetitions, or for a set time, before moving on to the next exercise. The exercises within each circuit are separated by a short rest period, and each circuit is separated by a longer rest period. The total number of circuits performed during a training session varies from two to six, depending on the athlete’s training level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced), their length of training (preparation or competition) and their specific training objective. Athletes should identify, on paper, three to four circuits that can be performed with the available resources. In each circuit, try to ensure that no two consecutive activities exercise the same muscle group. The circuit should be set up so that you work each body part as follows; total-body, upperbody, lower-body, core and trunk, total-body etc. The following are examples of exercises that can be used in a circuit training session. For upper body; press-ups, bench-dips, pullups, medicine ball chest pass, bench lift and inclined press-up. For lower-body; quat jumps, lunge jumps, single leg jumps, step ups, shuttle runs, hopping shuttles and bench squat. For core and trunk; Swiss ball passes (lower abdominals), Swiss ball stomach crunch (upper abdominals) and Supermans, performed off a bosu dome side up. For total-body; burpees, bike sprints, squat thrusts and skipping. It is important to conduct a warm up at the start and a cool down at its conclusion. Circuit training allows you to work your aerobic system while simultaneously building strength. Since you are constantly progressing through the workout, you will keep your heart rate up, therefore reaping the same benefits as the person who may mindlessly log many miles on the treadmill. You, however, will constantly be stimulating your mind, which will help keep boredom at bay. Also, due to fewer rest periods, you will increase the amount of testosterone you release, which serves to help your muscles grow. While it is true that if you were to perform long aerobic sessions, your testosterone level would drop and you would start to release cortisol (which causes the body to break down muscle tissue), this workout won’t take that long to complete. Therefore, you won’t reach the time required to start this cortisol-releasing process. Finally, since you will move through these workouts quickly, you won’t have to spend long hours in the gym and you can use the extra time to develop other skills like poker playing, break dancing, singing, or Twister. Paul Nicolls is conducting summer power skating camps Aug. 13-17 at Twin Rinks. For players in initiation, atom and peewee at a cost of $100 per skater, the camps will focus on forward and backward stride, edge control, turns, pivots, quick starts and acceleration.
