A semi-truck struck and killed a pedestrian walking along Riverside Road early Wednesday morning. The fatal collision occurred at 6:40 a.m. The pedestrian, who had not been identiﬁed by press deadline, was struck by a Kenworth commercial truck that was southbound on Riverside Road south of Vye Road. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the Kenworth, which normally carries fuel, was empty at the time. “A pedestrian appears to have fallen immediately in front of that truck – in front of the path of the truck – and was run over and killed,” said MacDonald. The 41-year-old truck driver was “extremely shaken” according to MacDonald. “Not much we can imagine that the truck driver could have done,” he added. The driver remained on scene and has been cooperative. MacDonald said no alcohol or drug use is suspected in regard to the driver. The victim appears to be a South Asian male. Police had the area closed off on Wednesday morning as the coroner and collision reconstruction experts were on scene.

Dad battles hep C Contracted from sharing needles in 1980s

hris Robinson isn’t a spokesperson for needle exchanges and other harm-reduction measures; he’s too busy working his construction job and being a single dad to his 12-year-old son. But his story is relevant to the current debate around Abbotsford’s harmreduction bylaw, which outlaws such initiatives and is being reconsidered by city council. Robinson lives in Abbotsford and is battling hepatitis C, which he believes he contracted from using dirty needles in the late 1980s when he didn’t have access to clean ones. He was living in Ottawa at the time, when clean needles were difficult to find. “If somebody happened to have one, there would be five or six of us using it,” Robinson said. They would use water and alcohol to clean the apparatus before passing the needle to the next person, mistakenly believing this would suffice. It didn’t. Robinson has long since been clean and sober, and this was the only time in his life that he shared needles. He moved to Vancouver in 1990. “I still remember walking down the street and somebody in a van pulling up in a van and saying, ‘You want some needles?’ “ This scene is typical

The idea is to reduce the spread of disease, eliminate the burden on the medical system and on individuals, and save lives. Robinson said he had not even heard of hepatitis C when he occasionally shared needles to shoot cocaine in the period from 1985 to 1990. He had a brief relapse in 1998, when he almost overdosed on heroin and gave up drugs for good. His son was born not long after, and his life became devoted to

him. But Robinson’s past came back with a vengeance two years ago at the age of 51. His stomach became swollen and hard. “It was very painful. When I would walk, it felt like all my insides would drop out,” he said. At first, he was diagnosed with constipation and then cancer of the lymph nodes, but further investigation revealed he was suffering from cirrhosis of the liver, caused by a chronic hepatitis C infection. Because his condition is advanced, he is not on any treatment, but he is not yet on the waiting list for a

transplant. Without one, his doctor says he has 10 years left. “It kind of weighs heavy, but I don’t dwell on it,” he says. “A lot of people don’t believe I’m sick ... I’m holding my own.” Robinson works fulltime, but his energy levels and strength aren’t what they used to be. He encourages others to get tested for hepatitis C because testing can lead to early diagnosis, treatment and the hope for a cure. He is also strongly in favour of needle exchanges because he, more than most, understands the potential impact of sharing needles.

What is hepatitis C? Hepatitis C is a viral disease that leads to swelling of the liver. Many people who become infected never feel sick and recover completely. If your body is not able to fight off the virus, you may develop chronic hepatitis, which can lead to liver scarring (cirrhosis), liver failure and even liver cancer. It is spread through blood-to-blood contact, such as by using injection drugs; getting

tattoos, piercings, pedicures, manicures or medical procedures without properly sterilized equipment; or having had blood transfusions or received blood products before 1990. Mayor promises mountain property rights to be respected Adrian MACNAIR Abbotsford News

Mayor Bruce Banman reassured upset residents of Sumas Mountain that the city will not interfere with their property rights for environmental protection. Banman and senior municipal staff struck a conciliatory tone as they met with mountain residents at Straiton Community Hall on Tuesday night and listened to three hours of public speaking. “I have no vested interest in what this becomes,” said Banman, who encouraged residents to provide input to the city that would help guide a new Official Community Plan (OCP) for the area formerly known as Area H before it was absorbed by Abbotsford from the Fraser Valley Regional District in 2008. Banman said a combination of misinformation and lack of public consultation led to the belief people were going to be losing lands to the city, but that won’t be happening. A hundred people packed the hall, the entire municipal council among them, to address concerns about the newly completed Sumas Mountain Environmental Management Study (SMEMS), which has identified biodiversity hotspots in the area and classified them into high, moderate, and low/no habitat sensitivity designations. But resident Trevor Newton expressed skepticism as to how the information was gathered on private property.

The burning issues were whether the environmental study would impact private property rights and how much consultation Abbotsford initially intended to have with residents. T.M. Sandulak said Abbotsford undertook the study without public consultation and with every intention of pushing through the OCP prior to the backlash. “What’s happening tonight is damage control,” he said, as heads nodded in the audience. Banman conceded there have been a number of issues that degraded public trust, such as a letter that was mistakenly sent out to rural uplands residents that they would now need to cut down bushes and clear blockages in city-owned ditches.

“When I found out what was going on I was less than impressed,” he said, adding the process got twisted so bad he’s not surprised residents “don’t believe a damn word we say.” Residents seemed genuinely appreciative of Banman’s candid remarks, who also spoke about his upbringing on rural land. When Jason Waddilove asked what pressures were forcing the city to create a development plan for Sumas Mountain, Banman pointed to population growth. Asking for a show of hands, the mayor asked how many landowners in the room believed the mountain would be see more development over the next 50 years. After nearly every hand went up, Banman concluded that was the reason the city needs an “intelligent” plan. Most people spoke to a need for a balance between conservation and development, the protection of wildlife habitat

and the preservation of private property rights. Jay Teichroeb, the city’s general manager of economic development and planning, said property rights will absolutely be respected, though that didn’t seem to satsify some in the room. Newton said when he went to the city about putting in a chain link fence on his property they responded with a letter about his “chain link fence development,” generating initial laughs which subsided when he explained the $1,500 city fee for this “development.” Also at issue is the subject of road maintenance on the mountain, which in some parts is heavily degraded by the hundreds of gravel trucks running up and down the mountain. The city says it’s a provincial issue until July 2013, while some people say they’ve been told by the province the city needs to fix them. And although the issue of gravel mines itself was discussed at length by many, city officials reminded people that it’s a provincial jurisdiction that is unrelated to the SMEMS study. The study calls for a new residential neighbourhoods that are environmentally and economically sustainable. It envisions the implementation of interconnecting greenspaces of conservation lands, parks, trails and protected areas. The current OCP was developed in 2003 by the FVRD. The next community meeting happens Sept. 11 at Straiton Hall.

Guest shot On Saturday I saw one of my best friends. It wasn’t the typical visit of wine and movies on the couch. Instead, we sat on her king-sized bed and talked quietly about how lucky she was. The day before, my friend was in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 1 in Abbotsford. You may have seen it on the news, or read it in the paper, or online. There were at least eight vehicles involved. She was the one extricated from her black Hyundai Accent after it was lodged under a dump truck. Miraculously, she survived with no broken bones and was released from hospital the next day. She did, however, receive three large lacerations to the back of head and lost four units of blood — nearly half the amount that’s in an adult human body. I found it strange that she wasn’t given blood at the hospital after losing so much, but the doctors told her she

was healthy enough that her body could make new blood without much of a problem. I’m also a healthy person and I too can make new blood without a problem. Mind you, I’ve never had to replenish four units of blood before, but I have lost one whole unit of blood before. Twenty-five times. See, I’m a blood donor. Recently I donated my 25th unit of blood — and afterwards while there I drank my 25th cup of tea and ate my 25th packet of cookies (because cookies and juice just don’t go well together, it has to be tea and cookies). I was quite proud of myself that day. Geeky as it may sound, for a long time I was looking forward to receiving the small teardrop-shaped pin that us twenty-fivers get — a simple red pin with “25” on it. And I was pleasantly surprised to open a letter a few weeks later to find a sparkly ‘bronze’ donor card with my name on it. I like to think of that card as something similar to a fancy platinum MasterCard that I can flash at people to show them how important I think I am. But my 25th donation is nothing compared to many others. Imagine donating 50 or 100 times. My dear friend and for-

mer co-worker, Penny Lett, told me that the next pin she’ll be getting is her 125th donation pin. Now that’s dedication! But that’s the type of person Penny is — very caring and selﬂess. In fact, it was Penny who encouraged me to make my ﬁrst donation about 10 years ago.

I donate blood because I want to. I thought about it for a while, asking myself “why should I donate blood?” Have I ever been a recipient of donated blood before? No. Has there ever been someone close to me who suddenly needed a blood donation? No. Was it because there was a sudden shortage of donated blood in Canada? No. I decided to do it because I can. Simple as that. Because I am eligible to donate blood. I don’t know how many people I’ve helped by donating blood, but I do know that the process (about an hour to an

hour and a half of answering questions, being tested, and waiting) is not that painful. Heck, even the needle isn’t that bad. And to make it more pleasant, every single person who is there to take your blood, ask you questions and walk with you over to the cookie station will thank you for coming in that day. Guaranteed. I know many people who can’t donate blood for various reasons — they’ve lived in, or visited, foreign countries that are on the no-go list, they have medical issues, or (sad and discriminatory as it may be) they’re a homosexual male. Someone I know won’t donate speciﬁcally because of the latter reason. I respect her choice, and I don’t agree with that restriction by Canadian Blood Services either, but I still donate, and I do it for several reasons. I donate because I know there is always a need for blood. I donate because I know my blood will in fact be used, never wasted. I donate blood because I want to. But to me, the number one reason you should donate blood is if you’re eligible. The number two reason is for the free cookies. If you are eligible, think about it. You could save many people’s lives.

My compliments to Southwest Contracting for their successful completion of Old Yale Road between DeLair Park and North Parallel Road. The job was done quickly and efficiently. Most of all I would like to complement them for their asphalt paving work. Yes, the new section is flat and smooth, but more importantly, the transitions between the new and old sections are almost seamless with nary a bump to be felt. Now if only we could get the city and the other contractors who do roadwork in this town to model Southwest’s exemplary work. Let’s do away with shoddy work and paved roads that are bumpier than a rutted wagon wheel track. Win Wachsmann

Kinder Morgan officials are denying that heavy oil sands bitumen – already carried by tanker through Vancouver harbour – would sink if it ever spilled in the ocean. Grilled by Metro Vancouver politicians Thursday, company reps called it misinformation in the media that diluted bitumen sinks in water, making a marine spill cleanup virtually impossible. “The diluted bitumen and other products don’t sink,” said Mike Davis, Kinder Morgan Canada’s director of marine development and engineering. “They’re less dense than sea water. They float.” He added any heavy crude oil could eventually sink if it “weathers” on the surface for too long, but added there’s no indication that would happen if a bitumen spill was boomed and cleaned within a reasonable period of time. Mayors at the Metro port cities committee said later they were surprised to hear the claim – and skeptical. So was B.C. Environment Minister Terry Lake when asked for comment. “The prevailing view is that bitumen will sink rather than float,” Lake said, but added more information might be needed. The province’s newly released technical report on heavy oil pipelines specifically lists bitumen’s different properties – and its potential to sink and complicate cleanup – as a source of higher risk. B.C. on track to balance budget B.C. ended the fiscal year with a smallerthan-forecast deficit of $1.84 billion, according to the provincial government. Finance Minister Kevin Falcon predicted the province is on track to return to a balanced budget in 2013-14. But he cautioned while the 2011-12 results are better than expected, B.C. still faces great economic uncertainty from fluctuating commodity prices and potential economic impacts from the European debt crisis. But B.C. Auditor General John Doyle pegged the deficit at $2.36 billion, finding the province understated it by $530 million due to its continued practice of deviating from accepted accounting methods. A deficit of nearly $2.5 billion had been budgeted.

Bonus pay reform excludes TransLink, Ferries officials Jeff NAGEL

A provincial reform limiting bonus payments for Crown corporation executives wonâ€™t apply at TransLink or BC Ferries. The move replaces the current bonus systems at Crown agencies with a hold back of up to 20 per cent of executivesâ€™ pay, which is released if targets are met. The province also announced a pay freeze for current Crown executives and said new senior executives will be hired at salaries 10 per cent lower than their predecessors.

Incentive pay â€“ publicly unpopular but considered an effective tool in encouraging performance â€“ became a flashpoint in 2009 when it was revealed former Ferries CEO David Hahnâ€™s bonuses and benefits doubled his pay to more than $1 million. Bonuses to TransLink executives were paid out earlier this year but are under a board-ordered review for future years and are also being examined as part of a provincial audit of the transportation authority. Neither agencies are technically Crown corporations so are exempt from the rules. Canadian Taxpayers Federation spokes-

man Jordan Bateman called it a â€œpoke in the eyeâ€? for taxpayers that TransLink and BC Ferries are untouched. â€œThose are the organizations most of us are most concerned with,â€? he said. â€œYou think of David Hahn â€“ the milliondollar man. You think of TransLink giving themselves bonuses the same week theyâ€™re raising gas taxes.â€? Bateman said the two bodies should have a â€œmoral obligationâ€? to voluntarily mirror the new rules. As for other Crown corporations, Bateman said much depends on whether the actual criteria set for holdback bonuses are easy or difficult to meet.

â€œItâ€™s a positive step forward, but maybe a half step,â€? he said, noting 99 per cent of BC Hydro employees were able to meet their past targets for incentive pay. â€œThe idea that every person in the public service should always get a bonus for hitting targets was ridiculous.â€? The new policy also says executives should earn no more than 85 per cent of the CEOâ€™s salary. The province also intends to phase out incentive pay for other non-executive staff, although it admits it canâ€™t do so in cases where such payments have been negotiated into union contracts, as is the case at ICBC.

We’re learning, but we’re learning well. “I’m more than proud of the guys – they did great. I have no regrets from this tournament.” In other action, the Emerald City Mudhens of Seattle beat Burnaby 24-10 in the elite women’s title game. Vancouver’s Young Bucks knocked off United of New Westminster 22-7 in the final of the men’s social division. Between 2009 and 2011, Abbotsford played host to an international sevens tournament, but that event was moved to Burnaby’s Swangard Stadium this year. In its absence, the ARFC stepped up and hosted its own tourney with a more local focus. “This is the first time we’ve done it on our own,” MacRury noted. “It was great. “Everybody is friends, we all know each other from playing every weekend.”

Koslowsky makes junior national team

Abbotsford’s Tyler Koslowsky has been named to the Canadian junior national men’s volleyball team. Koslowsky, a libero, cracked the roster following an impressive performance playing for Team B.C. Red at the National Team Challenge Cup in Gatineau, Que. He’ll spend the next month at the

National Training Centre in Gatineau in preparation for the NORCECA Junior Championship, which runs from Aug. 24 to Sept. 2 in Colorado Springs. Koslowsky’s ascension to the junior national squad is all the more remarkable considering he only began playing the libero position full-time

last season, his first with the Trinity Western Spartans. He’d previously been a setter with the Mennonite Educational Institute Eagles. “Tyler’s progression is much faster than we had thought,” said Spartans coach Ben Josephson. “We believed he would develop into one of the nation’s premier libero players

by the end of his career. But we didn’t think he would, in just a year and a half of playing the position, establish himself as a premier libero in his age class nationally. “He cares about the details and his teammates and those two characteristics have led him to this point of representing his country in volleyball.”

National judo silver is sweet for Yodogawa Cole Yodogawa tested his limits, both in terms of athletic ability and pain tolerance, at the recent Canadian Judo Championships in Toronto. In his second fight in the under-17 boys 66-kilogram division,

the Abbotsford athlete took a hard fall and absorbed a subsequent knee to the ribs. But he battled through the rib injury all the way to the final, where he finally met his match against an Ontario opponent and

settled for silver. "I wanted to win gold, so I pushed through," said Yodogawa, 16, who is going into Grade 11 at Abby Senior. "But before the final, I had a longer break, so my body cooled off and it started to hurt more."

After winning bronze in 2010 in the U15 division and silver this year, Yodogawa's goal is to take another step up the podium in 2013. "Next year, the nationals are in Vancouver, and I hope to take home the gold," he said.

Yodogawa was one of four medalists from the Abbotsford Judo Club. Perennial national medalist Brandon Jobb won a bronze, while Jeff Swadden and Leo Goldberg also took bronze in their first appearance at nationals.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather and great grandfather. He entered into the presence of the Lord Jesus at the age of 90 years. Peter was born in Blumenort, Siberia and immigrated to Canada with his family in 1926. In 1937, the Reimer family moved to Abbotsford and in 1947 Peter purchased a dairy farm on Harris Road, Matsqui. He married Stella Giesbrecht on February 8, 1948. A few months later they were forced out of their home by the flooding of the Fraser River. Peter and Stella continued on the farm until his retirement in 1978 when they moved to Abbotsford. Peter enjoyed working with his hands and often used his carpentry skills to volunteer for his church and community and in later years, turning it into a hobby, building chairs, tables and hope chests for his grandchildren and MCC. He is survived by his wife, Stella; five children, Sharon (Ben) Loewen, Luella (Dave) Thiessen, Doug (Glenda), Peter (Mariane), Shirley (Konrad) Golbeck; 22 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren; sisters, Katherine Rempel, Mary Reimer, and many relatives and friends. He was predeceased by a great granddaughter Leah Stobbe. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 7 from 7:30 - 9:00 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Rd. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, August 8 at 10:30a.m. at Maclure Road Mennonite Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at Clearbrook MB Church, 2719 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Gideons. Our family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Sherwood Manor for their loving care during the last few years.

Cheryl Maureen was born April 29, 1955 in Vancouver, BC, passed away peacefully with her loved ones by her side on July 25, 2012 at the age of 57. Predeceased by her parents Ken and Doris Barrett. Cheryl and Mike moved to Abbotsford in 1985. Cher will be remembered by her husband of 38 years, Mike; son Liam, mother-in-law Gwen Hall, sister Dawn Nicholas, brother Dave Barrett, nieces, nephews and friends. Cheryl worked several years at South Fraserway and McCallum Road Chevrons. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 3rd at 1:00 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2272 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Cherylâ€™s memory to the BC Cancer Society.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Liz held at Jubilee Hall on Bradner Road in Abbotsford on August 6th from 12:00 to 4:00.

Helen Ruth Ross passed away peacefully in her 82nd year with her family at her bedside on July 25, 2012 at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Helen was born in White Rock, B.C. on August 23, 1930 to John and Eva (Thomson) White. After Helenâ€™s birth the family returned to Mt. Lehman and lived on Olund Road. After Evaâ€™s death when Helen was just two years old John and his three young daughters moved back to the White family homestead on White Road (now Townline) where Helenâ€™s grandparents Edmund and Elizabeth White helped raise the girls. Helen and older sister Bev also lived for a while with their Uncle Edmund and Aunt Annie White whose farm was part of the original homestead. Helen attended elementary school in Matsqui Village, was honoured to be crowned May Queen in Abbotsford in 1944 and graduated from Philip ShefďŹ eld High School in 1948. She married her high school sweetheart Robert Ross in 1949 and they built a new house on Marshall Road. This would be their home for more than 60 years. Helen was a wonderful mother to six children and a loving and devoted wife. She is survived and sadly missed by her husband of 62 years Bob Ross, daughters Marilyn (Harvey) Goodwin, Elaine (Hans) Visser, Donna (Robert) Simpson, Shirley (Ken) Jansen and son Darrell (Ruth) Ross. Helen will also be missed by her grandchildren Michelle (Mike) Appeldoorn, Mark (Kara) Goodwin, Denise (Brad) Blades, Tiffany (Ryan) Biela, Wendy Dombrowski, Sheldon (Michelle) Visser, Darren (Amanda) Simpson, Kirk (Sheena) Jansen, Ryan and Clayton Ross and great grandchildren Kurtis, Tyson, Krystal and Allison Appeldoorn, Wyatt Goodwin, Brayden and Cole Blades, Keegan and Lin-

ley Biela, Shaelee and Chase Dombrowski, Blake Simpson, Preston and Alianna Jansen. Helen is also survived by her sister Bev (Phil) Evans, nephews Greg (Hope) Johnson, Jeff (Linda) Johnson, niece Diane (Pat) Miki, nephew Jack (Lynda) Thompson, sister-in-law June Ross and many nieces, nephews and extended family in the Ross, Thompson, Masse, Gibb, Thomson and Chevalley families. Helen was predeceased by her eldest child Dennis Ross in 2011, sister and brother-in-law June and Dave Thompson, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Sonny Johnson, Walter and Fae Ross, Delores and Al Masse and Wayne Ross. Mom devoted her life to the care of her family and her home. Her children will remember coming home after school to fresh baked cookies and brownies. She passed on her talents for knitting and sewing and was always available to help out with babysitting as the grandchildren came along. Helen enjoyed summer vacations at the ocean in Birch Bay, as well as camping and motorhome trips. Helen was a long time member of the Canadian Order of Foresters and enjoyed the friendships she made in the group. Helenâ€™s grandparents, the Whites, McCallums, and Thomsons were early pioneers in the Mt. Lehman area and she became interested in genealogy when putting together family histories for some locally written books. The family would like to thank the paramedics, doctors and staff at Abbotsford Regional Hospital for the wonderful care our mother received. We are especially thankful to the nurses on Baker 3W Surgical and Baker 2W Medical wards for the extra care and compassion shown to the family during this difďŹ cult time. A celebration of Helenâ€™s life will be held on Sunday, August 12th, 2-4 P.M. at The Rancho, 35110 Delair Road, Abbotsford.
