Construction Quick Tip:

Future buildings strive to be

self-sufficient

H

ousing and energy experts call the goal ‘net zero.’ It represents a building that has been constructed in such an energy-efficient way - with methods and materials - it is able to produce, on site, as much energy as it uses over the course of a year. “Due to premium construction efficiency and energy generating abilities, experiments are already proving it can be done,” says Todd Blyth at Nudura, a leading manufacturer of insulated concrete wall forms. “The first net-zero achievable school

(MS)

was opened in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and more are breaking ground. “Even now, the materials you choose can make a big difference to the overall efficiency of your home,” Blyth explained. “If you want the highest performance, be sure to pay close attention to decisions for the walls, windows, roofing, ventilation and indoor climate control. Those features in particular assist in the goal to completely offset energy consumption.” Nudura walls are a case in point in which interlocking concrete forms are replacing the traditional wood frame method. The system

is known to builders as ICFs, or insulated concrete forms. “Our ICFs consist of pre-assembled panels, each one stacked, reinforced, and then filled with concrete,” Blyth explains. “Once locked together (like Lego) the system creates a solid, monolithic wall reported to be up to nine times stronger, with far more fire protection and with far more sound insulation.” This feature -- alongside solar generation, geothermal heating and cooling, plus positioning your home to take advantage of natural light -- are just a few of the features already available. • BASEMENT FLOORS • GARAGE PADS • SIDEWALKS • PATIOS • DRIVEWAYS

Curling Club expansion

curling has a significant older population of players. There’s also the twin economic goals of maintaining the non-profit organization’s balanced budget — the club has never operated with a deficit — and preserving their important role of bring curling events and visitors to Red Deer. A great deal of preliminary study went into the initial planning process and included visits to different curling clubs throughout Canada to study what worked and, equally important, Continued on Page 8

isitors to Saturday’s Farmer’s Market in Red Deer will have noticed the large-scale expansion of the adjacent Red Deer Curling Centre. What they may not know about is the ambitious scope of the construction taking place. The current expansion will add 42,000 sq. feet for a total area of just over 60,000 sq. feet. But for Eldon Raab, longtime manager of the Red Deer Curling Centre, the goal of the current construction was simple. “We wanted to build a state of the art curling club that is the best in Canada.” Raab believes that this ambitious attitude reflects the historical self-sufficient nature of the Red Deer Curling Club. Beginning with the first facility in 1904, which was built for both hockey and curling, the planning and construction was been done by the members. For over 100 years, there has been a steady history of expansion to improve the curling club and we are a part of this established tradition.” The goal of this year’s expansion was not just to meet the challenge of becoming a state of the art facility. It was also to ensure that the Red Deer curling community continued to grow through new memberships and new training opportunities in order to attract new interest and shift the demographic reality that

8 ......................................Red Deer LIFE Sunday, July 8, 2012

Continued from Page 7 according to Raab, “to avoid what has not worked elsewhere.” “We are also fortunate in having very dedicated, professional members on our building committee who understand the construction challenges we were facing,” says Raab. “This was fundamentally a huge move from what was really a non-insulated barn to a state of the art curling structure. With our in-house expertise and through our on-site studies, we identified the need to construct an expansive clear glass area for spectators viewing as well as viewing monitors during televised tournaments. But the real heart of the construction involved the installation of an insulated, temperature and humidity controlled building. This allows our in-house ice-makers to produce the best ice for curling. In this sport where a tenth of a degree temperature change can result in a deteriorating ice surface, the importance of the quality of the ice cannot be underestimated. Along with the expansion from 8 sheets to 12 sheets of ice, we think there will be a real impact on the quality of the facility.” There will be other benefits including greater energy efficiency and reduced operating costs through a computer-controlled plant that runs only when necessary and only at the capacity needed. But that’s not all. In addition to improved curling facilities, Raab emphasizes that “this expansion provides additional city facilities to the public. Our goal was to develop a community-minded building. We are moving from an October to March facility to becoming a year-round facility. We can now host other Provincial and Canadian Championships such as judo, fencing and archery on the 28,000 sq. ft. event floor (ice surface). Our upper level can host many social functions such as weddings in this newly renovated lounge. The 1800 sq. ft. community meeting room will hold 80 to 90 people to service the community

Pictured are - left to right - Kerry Booth (Timcon Construction Project Manager), Rich Robert (an independent project coordinator hired by the Curling Centre) and Eldon Raab (Curling Centre Manager).

and the renovated, enlarged kitchen will offer a full catering services year round.” The price tag for the project is $8.5 million with the City contributing $6.175 million; the province contributing $875,000; the Curling Centre contributing another $1 million; and independent sponsors adding another $300,000. Construction started in February 2012 with a tight building schedule that should result in a curling start date of October 22 2012. Raab explains that “the tight schedule was intended to ensure that there is minimum disruption of the regular curling season. We were actually pounding steel during the Farmers’ Bonspiel. The centre was closed for the season at the start of the Scotties tournament to allow construction to begin.”

many Alberta companies is the appeal of the oil sector in terms of attracting skilled workers. Fortunately, the company has worked hard at maintaining skilled workers for the long-term by always having projects on the back burner and through good working relationships with sub trade contractors. Raab sees some nice surprises ahead for Red Deer’s curling community. “ We’ve purchased the best Canada Curling Association approved rocks at a cost of $62,000 and we believe these rocks, along with the all aspects of the renovated building, will vastly improve the curling experience of both competitive and recreation curler and the viewer. With four national champions coming out of Red Deer this year, we want to keep the curling community alive, help produce a healthy, active lifestyle for the citizens of Red Deer and help our city prosper by attracting more major curling events.”

After a lengthy selection process, Timcon Construction Ltd. was chosen and Raab reports that the club has been “very happy with the work done by Timcon” and how changes to the project – such as the unexpected need for an additional sprinkler system – have been dealt with under budget.” Timcon Construction Ltd., according to the Project Manager Kerry Booth, an eight-year veteran with the company, has been Red Deerbased for over 35 years. This is the third recreation facilities project that Booth has been personally involved with. The recent construction by Timcon Construction on Penhold’s state of the art multiplex community centre provided valuable experience, as has recent work on the Dawe Centre and the Kinsmen Arena. “These projects added to our knowledge of construction methods, best building material, maintaining a schedule, ensuring materials don’t lay around and are used immediately and effectively communicating expectations. A team approach and these experiences have really helped with the Curling Centre project.” “Our recipe for success is the management of the project and the cooperation we get with the sub-trades. The expertise and dedication of these contractors – they really know their stuff – has really made a difference with the expansion,” says Booth, “especially with the need for critical attention necessary to produce the best quality ice surface. The ice surface is really what drives this facility and what we’ve really worked diligently on. The contractors are also doing an excellent job of making this a more media-friendly centre with full cable and electrical support for media outlets such as TSN. This will really enhance the club’s ability to continue to attract Scotties and other high-profile curling events to Red Deer.” One of the challenges faced by Timcon Construction Ltd. as with

or decades plywood was the go-to inexpensive wood of choice for many home-repair projects. In fact, it was actually the first manufactured wood product available. Then the term MDF, or mediumdensity fiberboard, started making its way onto home-improvement shows and among do-it-yourselfers, making it a popular material in recent years. Still, many people do not know the differences between these types of wood products. Plywood is constructed by gluing several layers of thin wood veneers between two pieces of wood to create a solid sheet. Experts say there is an odd number of veneer layers, and each one is attached at a right angle to the one below to add strength to the plywood. There may be knots or irregularities in the plywood because it is made of actual slices of wood. It comes in a variety of strengths, depending on the thickness of the plywood. Thickness can vary by sheet depending on the manufacturer, so each sheet may not be consistent. MDF is formed with wood fibers or shavings mixed with glue or resin. Under heat or pressure, the MDF is made into a solid material. Because MDF is not made from slices of wood to form veneers, it will not have the traditional graining or knots associated with wood. This can be an advantage or disadvantage depending on how it is ultimately used. MDF is often easy to cut, drill and manipulate because users will not have to work around grain or knots. But users should be careful to drill pilot holes before attaching MDF because it can split. Due to machine creation, MDF is generally uniform in thickness, which makes it consistent for many uses. It is important to note that sanding and cutting of MDF can cause the release of formaldehyde. Safety goggles and a mask are a must when using this product. Plywood is more readily used for walls, ceilings and subfloors because of its strength. MDF is widely relied on for building cabinets, crafts, shelving and trimwork.

Hiring Temporary Foreign Workers

T

he demand for skilled labour in Central Alberta is on the rise again and many local businesses in the construction industry are finding they cannot fill vacant positions. If local skilled workers are unavailable, companies may choose to look to other areas of the country or even outside our borders to fill the vacancies. Some companies may choose to hire Temporary Foreign Workers. These workers can fill a the gap in the job market, but there are a few things employers need to know before they pursue this option. The maximum stay for a Temporary Foreign Workers in Canada is four years. After that time they cannot return to work in Canada until after four more years. Employers hiring TFWs (Temporary Foreign Workers) must provide documentation during an Employer Compliance Review to demonstrate that all previous TFWs followed the conditions of the Labour Market Opinion (LMO) under which they were hired. Employers need to be diligent with this paperwork - if they are found to be not compliant, the employer may not hire TFWs for a period of two years. Continued on Page 14

Many graduates of Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School have gone on to find work in apprenticeships and trade related industries. A credit to the CTS instructors at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School. BUILDING CONSTRUCTION: Instructed by Dale Schindel is offered at three levels: Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced. Upon completion of all three levels, a student who applies him or herself has an excellent knowledge basis to move into an apprenticeship. The Introductory level introduces the student to equipment use and safety. The projects are designed and set up to challenge and create interest for the student to continue on into higher levels. At the Intermediate level, students are required to make one compulsory project and then design, draft and construct furniture. Students can choose to take an existing design and modify it or start with their own sketch. Along with the Advanced students, the Intermediate class project is to design a playhouse, or storage shed. Plans are hand drafted with material costs and the students work together to produce the final product. This project is treated like a job site where Advanced students act as supervisors and foremen with the Intermediate students as the laborers. Part of the supervisors’ responsibilities (Advanced students) is to evaluate the work of the Intermediate students. The structures come complete with flooring and electricity, siding, shingles, and eave troughs as needed.

FABRICATION - WELDING: instructed by Adam Newman and Richard Zimmerman. Fabrication is also offered at three levels. In Introductory, students learn basic welding skills by making a motor cycle stand or shop stool, plant hangers or other items of their own design. At the Intermediate and Advanced levels, larger projects are undertaken. Ornamental fencing, mini choppers, docks, boats, horse trailers, utility trailers and farm equipment are a few of the items students work on. Client service is a big part of the program at the Advanced Level. AUTOBODY REPAIR: instructed by Adam Newman and Richard Zimmerman.Auto Body repair is offered at the Intermediate and Advanced levels, projects completed by the students are the Panel and painting completed by apprentices, and complete vehicle body repair and painting. Students participating in these classes have the opportunity bring their own vehicles in to complete any repair and refinishing that is needed. AUTOMOTIVE MECHANICS: instructed by Rob Grey is offered in three levels.Students in Mechanics work on various sub-systems found on modern vehicles, starting from the basic to the complex. CTS MEDIA & DESIGN at Lindsay Thurber has moved in

a new and exciting direction! We have several new course offerings, with a view towards allowing students to specialize in specific areas as opposed to a broader approach. Our focused programs include MS Applications, Architectural Design, Programming, Photography, Visual Media, Motion Media, Web Design, Video, Animation, Financial Management, Yearbook, Tourism, Legal Studies, and Fashion Studies. By streamlining our courses, we encourage students to explore their interests and passions while taking their skill sets to higher levels than previously taught.
