Now the incredible taste of Maldon Sea Salt is complimented by a gentle smoky flavour. Traditional methods of gently cold-smoking the salt crystals produce a perfectly balanced taste with a delicate flavour and subtle aroma. The Maldon smoked salt flakes add an extra dimension when seasoning meat, fish and poultry. It’s also great in sauces, salsas, marinades and rubs, especially as summer brings us BBQ season. This means you can create smokiness without adding meat. Smoked sea salt imparts flavour to vegetarian versions of recipes that normally call for bacon or sausage. Add a dusting to barbequed steaks, chicken or vegetables to highlight the fresh-off-the-grill flavour. Stir a bit into barbeque sauces or baked beans for results that will rival any smokehouse. Sprinkle on home-baked kale chips or freshly popped popcorn for an addictive smoky crunch. You and your family will love the rich flavors that Maldon smoked salt brings to many of your favourite dishes.

HISTORY OF FRUIT WINES Bringing out the DELICIOUS ESSENCE OF BERRIES AND TREE FRUITS

BOOK CORNER ALMOSTTHERE The Family Vacation Then and Now

We are glad to see that today in Canada, fruit wines are experiencing a renaissance. They are becoming more of a first choice for wine drinkers as winemakers are styling dry, off-dry, sparkling and dessert wines to bring out the delicious essence of berries and tree fruits. In fact, many fruit wines including our island coastal blackberry and blueberry wines are full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. It hasn’t always been this way. It often comes as a shock to people when they realize that all wine is not made from grapes and that grapes are not considered a fruit under the federal excise regulations. Although the idea of producing wine from fruits other than grapes might seem strange at first, there had been a long tradition in European countries from ancient times until 200 years ago of producing fruit wines. At that time, French vineyard owners wanted to protect their industry from encroachment by other fruits, which led to the passing of

a law declaring that wine could only be made from grapes. Because of that law, the knowledge that other fruits can make equally good wines was lost and fruit wine started to fade away. Fruit wines have a long and respected history in the world. To mention a few, plum wine has been made in China and Japan for centuries; Germany is famous for apple wines; .Hungary has some fine back current wines; Quebec with its famous iced ciders and the passion fruit and mangosteen wines of Thailand. And in fact, the first commercial wines of Vancouver Island were made in Victoria from Loganberries. If you haven't tried fruit wines yet, it is time to think “Outside of the Grape” and visit your local fruit wineries this summer. HARDWOOD FLOORING 101 Hardwood floors provide natural beauty and superior durability. However, being a natural product, it has several characteristics that must be considered. We want you to enjoy your hardwood floors for many years. Here’s some information on keeping your hardwood floors beautiful and long lasting. PETS

HIGH TRAFFIC AREAS

Buy broad-based water dishes or water dishes that come with a spill-resistant stand. Place mats to protect from spills and wet paws. Make sure that wet mats don't sit too long on your hardwood floor. Seek advice from pet store retailers about how to treat the surface of a hardwood floor in the event of an "accident". Always follow the instructions as stipulated by manufacturers of stainremoval products. Clip your pet's claws to reduce scratching the surface of hardwood floors. Clear water spills and urine right away—don't leave messes to sit. Damage (dents, scratches, stains, etc.) caused by pets is not covered by warranties.

High traffic areas will show signs of wear first. You may see a decrease in the luster level of the wood floor in these areas. Protect hallways with a runner and entrances with a mat. Also, be aware that high heels can dent hardwood floors.

FELT PADS AND FLOOR PROTECTORS Felt pads or floor protectors are required under furniture to minimize scratches. Certain types of wheels may damage your floor. Use barrel-type caster wheels or wide flat glides to protect your hardwood flooring investment.

HARDWOOD CLEANING Vacuum regularly using a felt or soft brush head on your vacuum's wand attachment as small stones and dirt tracked in from outside can scratch the finish of your wood floor. Do not damp mop and never clean your wood floor with water and/or vinegar. Do not use any wax or cleaner that must be mixed with water, such as oil soap. This may result in loss of warranty. Water can dull the finish and permanently damage the wood. Only use cleaners approved by the manufacturer. Use mats at entrances to keep grit and moisture from being tracked in. Do not use rubber, foam back, or plastic mats, as they may discolour the floor. Wipe spills immediately. When liquid is spilled onto the wood floor, use a slightly damp cloth or paper towel to immediately clean up and dry the affected area.

MOVING OUTDOORS when the warm weather arrives A huge trend in home improvement is to use products that enable you to spend more time outdoors regardless of weather conditions. Installing a retractable awning over your deck or patio hits a home run on many levels. They create an instant covered outdoor room, they offer sun and rain protection, look stunning, and awnings give your home an identity with increased curb appeal. Practical benefits of Awnings are reduced temperatures by 15 degrees instantly, a drop in solar heat gain by 55%-77% which can reduce your energy consumption by 60% according to ASHRAE, The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Engineers. Awnings do not require building permits or costly building materials. High quality awnings are made with performance fabrics by Sunbrella®, Tempotest® or Dickson®, use stainless steel and powder coated parts sourced from Europe and North America, and can be assembled right here in B.C. for delivery in a couple weeks. Popular options add to the enjoyment, pitch control allows you to adjust the awning to different angles, drop down screens lower from the front bar for added protection. Wind Sensors will automatically retract your awning if the winds pick up. Add a motor, plug it in, and with a push of a button, your “room” is ready! Life with an Awning is a great solution. Sun or Liquid Sun, you will have a smile on your face as you relax, well protected, outdoors.

I suspect he was referring to food shortages, energy, transportation, waste issues, war and the like. But gardens can solve other problems too. Apparently on the International Space Station, the crew battled to be the one to tend the plant culture experiments. There is something about a garden that is calming and timeless. Here on Earth, to grow lush, nutrient rich food, compost solves the problem. It is part of the normal cycle of nutrients. Even the best chemical fertilizers only add a few nutrients and not in a form that plants thrive on. Plants want humus. One of the main principles of organic gardening is composting, cycling the wastes from the garden and returning them to the soil to feed the next generation of plants. For unwitting gardeners such as yours truly, compost is the great equalizer. It will turn the poorest soil into lush loam over

time. It is virtually impossible to go wrong with adding compost. We just picked some snap peas for dinner. You just can’t buy flavour like that! So with compost, not only are you feeding your soil and therefore plants, you are keeping a valuable resource from being wasted in a landfill. I’m off to the garden now and will ponder how this is solving the world’s problems.

What to bring with you to the hospital You're pretty sure you're going to set a new record for having the biggest baby, and pretty sure your feet are still down there. Which means you're no doubt thinking about the coming attraction: that amazing yet challenging time of labor and birth. Between picking out the nursery colors, putting together the new crib and admiring the impossibly small clothes, we wanted to make one task a little easier for you: packing your hospital bag.

"Feel beautiful, live beautiful, be beautiful."

by Charming Clothing for Infants, Girls & Ladies and Home Decor

THE COMOX VALLEY RECORD MUST-HAVE ITEMS Toiletries: including moisturizers and lip balm (hospitals can be quite dry), toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner (hospitals often offer these but it's nice to have your own), soap, a hairbrush and any other items you usually pack to go away. A hair band and elastic. Comfy Clothes: or pajamas, which could include a T-shirt, robe and socks (so your feet won't get cold). (Some moms prefer to wear a hospital gown so you don't have to worry about washing it later.) Pillow & Blanket: Pillows can help make you more comfortable. The blanket is important because some women get cold during labor, and hospital blankets are often light. Flip Flops or Slippers: or slip-on footwear for those 'let's get things moving' moments. Nursing Bra: it's best to bring 2 so you have a fresh change - the Original Nursing Bra is perfect for this stage in the game since it is cotton and offers super-comfy 24/7 support. Our Nursing Bra and Tank picks for packing your Hospital Bag.

Nursing Tank: The Essential Nursing Bra Tank is a mom favorite during labor because it's comfortable, offers a full bra inside and gives baby full access to the breast for that oh so important skin to skin contact. Our moms like to pack two: one for labor, and another to change into after. Feminine Hygiene Pads & Underwear: Heavy-flow feminine-hygiene pads (no tampons) and extra underwear. Car Seat: Most hospitals won't let you go home without one. Your Favorite Outfit for Baby: Now for the fun part - your favorite outfit to take your baby home in (remember to consider the weather), as well as a blanket, hat, undershirt and diapers, to introduce your little one to their new home!

BACKTO BASICS HAIR CARE In these fast moving times it can be easy to forget to slow down and get back to the basics. And when it comes to caring for your hair, it is no exception. How does your hair feel? Dry? Oily? Frizzy? How is your scalp? Tight? Flakey? Greasy? Many hair and scalp complaints can be helped with basic care. For dry hair, think of what you are doing to it and what you are putting on it. Maybe your shampoo is too harsh for your hair type. Perhaps you are using a protein based conditioner when your hair actually needs moisture. Dry, itchy scalp? Check the ingredients. High percentages of sulfates in shampoos can irritate. How often do you wash your hair? If it is once a day or more you need to be using a gentle cleansing daily shampoo so as to not strip all the natural oils. Remember the old story of brushing your hair – 100 strokes? Brushing your hair (when it is dry) with a soft, natural bristle brush will distribute natural oils (sebum) to the midshafts and ends helping

to moisturize and de-frizz as well as stimulate circulation at the scalp to encourage healthy hair growth. If you are experiencing oily hair, turn down the heat in the shower. Hot water can also stimulate your scalp’s sebum production causing ‘greasy’ hair. If you cannot give up the hot shower, at least rinse your hair under cool water. Also use a scalp balancing shampoo to help control oil production and when applying your conditioner, concentrate on the lengths of hair keeping it off the scalp. Heat is no friend to oily hair (the weather this summer should suit you just fine). So dial down the heat on your blow drier as well and finish your style on cool. Try using styling products that are designed to absorb excess sebum and lift hair away from the scalp for a fresh look all day. And keep those little fingers out of your tresses!

VALLEY LIVING INTHE HOME

Stay Home & Get Out Simply finding a table and some chairs to plunk on your patio or deck is not the best way to create an outdoor living space. Over the past few years, you’ve probably noticed that there is just as much attention paid to your outdoor space as there is to your indoor living space. Many of the same design principles that apply to interiors are just as relevant outside. Today, outdoor living is devoted to comfort and style. To help you navigate through the process of developing your personalized outdoor living space, we’ve created a guide with today’s trends. Take a few minutes and determine how you will use your space before running out to the store and becoming overwhelmed. Arm yourself with ideas, measurements, a budget and a list of destinations to start your design journey.

BEYOND THE GRILL If you are a serious entertainer, consider adding a refrigerator, sink, cooktop or even a pizza oven.

BRING YOUR WORK OUTDOORS Why stay inside? Travel outside with your wireless. Think heaters and awnings if you work late into the summer nights.

TRAVEL WISETIPS Enjoy warm weather fashions and consider full spectrum colour tropical prints in wrinkle resistant cottons. A slight spandex factor can make them additionally comfortable as they offer less resistance and flex with you. Avoid fatigue and discomfort; keep cruise wear fabrics loose to promote good circulation and allow for adjustment to changes in barometric pressure. Ocean moisture and perspiration contribute to wrinkles. Choose either non-wrinkle clothing or fabric that wrinkles fall out of with walking. Keep them light in colour and in weight. Just as you increase your intake of water so dehydration doesn’t sap your energy, avoid tiring, dark, heavy fabrics. Lightweight wrinkle resistant cottons like EZZE WEAR permit air to circulate, weigh less to pack and dry faster when washed. Factor in wind protection and sea spray by packing a lightweight wind and waterproof outer garment

DO LOCK YOUR LUGGAGE, but buy a TSA (Transportation Security Administration) approved lock. RELAX AND RENEW Take your morning yoga routine outdoors or enjoy an evening of meditation. Maybe consider adding a water feature and create ambience with outdoor lights, pillows and greenery.

FURNITURE Do your research to figure out if resin, wood or metal is the best for your space. There are pros and cons to each.

KEEP IT REAL Remember you are outside. This means bugs. Grit. Dirt. Embrace it and enjoy the summer!

If airport security personnel need to inspect your checked bag, they no longer need to cut your locks or force the bag open and risk damaging it. Travel Sentry® locks allow TSA to open your locks and re-lock your bags, sending them quickly on their way.

GOING THE DISTANCE? Use No Jet-Lag to ensure you enjoy the best usage of your travel time. Common symptoms of jet lag are fatigue, disorientation, lack of concentration and motivation, dehydration, sleep disruption and discomfort of legs and feet. No Jet-Lag is a unique homeopathic remedy that now offers a convenient solution. Its effectiveness has been proven scientifically and is recognized internationally by business travelers, sports teams, military and airline personnel. One package of No Jet-Lag is sufficient to cover 40 hours of flying time. We can “COLOUR MATCH any paint... Unfortunately it isn't exactly true. Paint company's can come close - but...

By: Judith Moore

It is a mystery to me why you, or your painter, using a certain type of paint, don't use that company's colour palette?? Each paint company carefully puts together their best colours with their bases and formulas and keep their inventory fresh and up-to-date. Recently, I chose very specific colours from Benjamin Moore, to give a clients home a lift. The client gave the colour chips to the painter, then went on holiday. When she returned and walked into her home she called me right away, she was extremely unhappy she said all the colours looked "dingy". I went to her home, armed with the colour chips.

Walking into the foyer I saw immediately that the colours were wrong. Putting the original colour chips up on the wall it was obvious that the colour match the painter promised, didn't match. The entire house looked dark and as if the walls needed to be washed. To further the "colour match" claim I challenged several paint company's to try to match a colour that I have created for myself, with a very specific formula. Each company was given a good sized paint chip of my colour and they all tried their best. Not one of them could. What I found the most interesting is that they ALL put black into the paint - and my formula does not have ANY black in it at all. As a Designer I do have a preference as to what paint I use, but I know that each project has different needs and budgets and I must be flexible in what I recommend. Whether budget driven or not - most of us gravitate towards a specific paint. When a designer puts together a

INTHE HOME VALLEY LIVING

THE COMOX VALLEY RECORD

SMART SAVINGS ~ CABINET REFACING Have you ever wanted to wave a magic wand and give your old kitchen and bathroom a sleek, modern look? Well you can, usually in less than three days and for under $3500. If your kitchen layout is basically fine and the boxes structurally sound, you should consider refacing instead of replacing and save yourself a ton of money. For a third the cost of starting over from scratch, you can transform your kitchen with zero fuss and minimal downtime. Refacing means keeping what’s good and changing only the exterior components – the doors, drawer fronts, side panels and trim. Everything else stays just as it is. From an environmental perspective it’s the green thing to do. The old doors are recycled and nothing goes to the landfill.

MAKEOVER MAGIC At the end of the day the difference is dramatic. With all the money you save other projects suddenly become affordable. You can select from BC hardwoods or manmade polymers in any style and colour – elegant raised centre panel, traditional Shaker or contemporary. Once you’ve decided on the look, exact measurements are taken and new doors, drawer fronts and end panels custom-sized to your kitchen’s specifications. Standard manufacturer warranties are five years. Even older style face frame cabinets can be magically transformed by changing over to concealed hinges and ordering slightly larger doors for that sleek, seamless look. The creative touches needn’t stop there: With the money left over you can opt for a vertical pantry, roll-out shelves or pot drawers that don’t have you bending like a pretzel to access those lower shelves.

BUYING & SELLING Realtors agree that kitchens and bathrooms can make or break a sale. If you’re buying or selling, refacing pays for itself several times over. Just get everything in writing to avoid any costly little surprises after the fact. North Island Cabinet Refacing • www.nicabinets.com • 250-650-3499
