Rash of bike thefts
Police warn owners to lock them up NEIL HORNER
news@pqbnews.com
The fine summer weather experienced by District 69 residents is perfect for riding a bike, but as the local RCMP note, it’s also perfect for going for a ride on bicycles that don’t belong to you. Corporal Jesse Foreman said Monday bike thieves have been active in the Wembley Road area over the past few days. “It looks like we had quite a rash on both Friday and Saturday nights,” he said, noting several vehicles were also entered and rifled through. “Lots of people just leave their bikes out in the yard or on the patio or even in the back yard at this time of year,” he said. Foreman urged bicycle owners to lock their rides at night, regardless of how seemingly secure they might appear. As well, he urged drivers to both lock their doors and remove all valuables prior to leaving their vehicles for the night.

Athlete hailed by the city Paralympics record-holder Michelle Stilwell ready for the 2012 Games in London AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
Local Paralympics star Michelle Stilwell was given a formal send off by Parksville council Monday. “We are all very proud of you,” said mayor Chris Burger as he listed off some of her numerous records and accomplishments including being the only Paralympic woman to win gold at two different games. Stilwell appeared almost embarrassed by the attention as she admitted she’d broken the 100 metre world record

Stilwell, who lived in Nanoose Bay for years, proudly told council she now lives in Parksville and has been “welcomed to the community and embraced warmly.” She spoke of how fast the four years since the last Summer Games went and some of extensive training and preparation she’s doing to shave hundredths of seconds off her time. STARTING POINT Chamber lauds QB village planning QUALICUM BEACH — The Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce has applauded the Town of Qualicum Beach council and staff in a media releaseb Monday, for engaging the business community, developers and residents through a series of meetings to address the Village Neighbourhood Planning Project. “We believe the Village Neighbourhood Planning Project correctly identifies and will contribute to addressing the challenges being faced locally during the current economic times,” stated the Chamber in the release. “The approach supports the vision of a stronger village neighbourhood, which will result in a more vibrant downtown, prosperous economy, stronger community, improve amenities for residents, and increase housing diversity within the downtown core.” — NEWS Staff

HOW TO REACH US:
It has been a year of highs and some lows for blues songstress Layla Zoe, but one things for certain, she’s never been busier. Currently the former Qualicum Beach resident is promoting her sixth album Sleep Little Girl, released in late November 2011 and made in Germany on the independent record label Cable Car Records. Zoe’s career has been bustling this year to say the least, touring in Quebec
and Ontario between January and April and flying to Germany in May to tour for the second time in Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. Halfway through her shows in Germany, Zoe’s career took a turn when she was forced, for the first time, to cancel a few shows. “It was a very hard time for me and I felt depressed because I have worked so hard to get where I am today and music is the one thing that brings me the most joy in this life,” she said. However, said Oceanside RCMP Corporal Jesse Foreman, while it was bad, the crash that sent a vehicle slamming into a ditch only resulted in minor injuries. The crash, he said, took
place at 4:30 a.m. when the male driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel. “There were no drugs and alcohol involved,” Foreman said. “However, he took quite a tumble, 50 or 60 feet into the
ditch. The neighbours woke up to screeching and smashing and they thought it was more serious than it was.” No charges were laid in the crash, which completely destroyed the vehicle.

Thousands ock to St. Mark’s 40th annual fair in Qualicum Beach raises money for Eagle Park seniors facility NEIL HORNER
news@pqbnews.com
T
he 40th edition of St. Mark’s Fair in Qualicum Beach drew thousands of eager shoppers to Veterans Way Saturday, despite intense competition from other events in the community. St. Mark’s publicity chair Suzanne Adkins said the 140 booths set up was more than ever and while the crowds weren’t perhaps quite as thick as in some past years, she’s conďŹ dent St. Mark’s will have raised somewhere between the $16,000 and $18,000 it has brought in historically. “Most of the vendors felt they had a good day,â€? she said. “Nobody said it had been a slow day or not a good day. We didn’t sense there were as many people, but maybe it was more of a steady stream than in the past.â€? The money, she said, will go to worthy causes in Qualicum Beach, including the purchase of needed equipment for the Eagle Park seniors facility as well as a daily lunch program for Qualicum Beach Middle School and funding a youth worker. “Last year we bought all new bed tables for the residents,â€? she said. “They were in desperate shape but not bad enough for the government to replace them. In the past we have also purchased a blanket warmer and a reclining chair for people who are visiting and who don’t want to leave for the night.â€? This year’s purchase, she said, has not been determined, but the church will take the advice of staff at Eagle Park to determine what it will be. “It’s up to the facility to tell us what they need,â€? Adkins said. One added feature this year, she noted, was the provision of four electric vehicles, sponsored by the municipality, which shuttled visitors not only to St. Mark’s but also to The Old School House arts centre and local stores. “We hope the electric transport the town provided allowed people to come down and visit local stores, which is an important,â€? she said. Adkins was also pleased at The Gardens in Qualicum Beach becoming a partner in the event, joining the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 76, St. Stephen’s Church and the Qualicum Beach Curling Club.

Helene McIntosh paints at Craig Heritage Park Museum and Archives during an outing with her Wednesday painting group based at the MAC.
Painters rally for the MAC Wednesday Painters Group raising money, awareness for gallery LISSA ALEXANDER
reporter@pqbnews.com
A group of artists painting en plein air (outside, on-location) are trying to bring awareness to the McMillan Arts Centre (the MAC) to try and keep the art gallery housed in the old building alive. “Since the gallery doesn’t receive any funding they are in a very dangerous position and we are concerned they might not be able to carry on, said Helene McIntosh, one of the original members of the Wednesday painting group. The group was formed in 2001 at the Rogue Gallery in Parksville, but after it was shut
down they relocated to the MAC. In the summer months the classrooms they use at the MAC hold children’s programs so they take to the outdoors and have painted recently at Little Qualicum Falls, Rathtrevor Park and the Craig Heritage Park Museum and Archives. “It’s a very enthusiastic group,â€? said McIntosh, “we enjoy the beneďŹ ts of being together, we critique one-another, the camaraderie is good and it’s our social life.â€? Many of the painters are highly skilled and a show of their work will be held at the MAC throughout August. The opening reception is Friday,
August 3 from 7 to 9 p.m. and refreshments will be served. Donna Hales, one of the original members in the group, will be playing the keyboard at the reception. Two other shows currently up at the MAC are It’s a Small World, with intriguing miniature paintings as well as Close-Ups:Photography. McIntosh is hoping others in the community will want to join the Wednesday painters group, or perhaps form another group at the MAC. For more information contact the MAC at www.mcmillanartscentre.com or call 250248-8185.

Shotgun suspect nabbed in Coombs NANAIMO — A Nanaimo man faces charges after he allegedly brought a shotgun to work and threatened a fellow employee. The incident happened at a construction site near Country Club Centre Wednesday shortly before 1 p.m. when a man phoned police saying he had been threatened by a co-worker with a shotgun. When police arrived the suspect had left in his truck, but investigators tracked him down to another worksite in Coombs. The suspect was arrested without incident sever-
al hours later with help from Oceanside RCMP. Police found the shotgun allegedly used in the threat in the suspect’s truck. The ďŹ rearm had a trigger lock on it preventing its use. Mounties also found two more authorized ďŹ rearms in the suspect’s home. “This is allegedly a situation of conict in the workplace that should have been dealt with in another manner,â€? said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. “Regardless of the fact that there was a trigger guard on it and it wasn’t
loaded, it’s the presumption that he has a ďŹ rearm and to others it would seem like he is prepared to use it. This is totally inappropriate and as a result, he faces two Criminal Code charges.â€? Dean Charles Sumner, 44, appeared in Nanaimo provincial court Thursday charged with possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace and uttering death threats. He was released and will make his next court appearance Aug. 21. — Nanaimo News Bulletin/ Black Press

The Regional District of Nanaimo doesn’t want residents to ďŹ nd themselves faced with their recylcing spread all over the road or, worse, face to face with the bear that’s doing it. For this reason, the RDN is pushing a Bear Aware program to encourage residents to take steps to avoid attracting hungry bruins to their homes. Regional District of Nanaimo chief administrative ofďŹ cer Carol Mason noted there were bear sightings in Qualicum Beach and even on Gabriola Island recently and concerns have been expressed about the green bin program serving as an attractant to bears. To this end, she requested the allocation of $3,000 for Bear
Aware information sessions for the public. Director Alec McPherson said these information sessions are clearly needed. “If you go into our area of Cedar after 5 p.m. the day before garbage collection, three out of four bins are already out and we have bears that are resident in the area, he said. “Could there be a way, such as a sticker program, where someone comes along and slaps it on the green bucket asking MOUNTAIN BIKE HYBRID BMX NEW & USED
the owner not to put it out until the morning? Although this suggestion didn’t go anywhere, directors did vote for the $3,000 allocation.

Cheer for Canada
T
he sixth Olympic ring is schadenfreude. In the days and weeks leading up to last Friday’s opening ceremonies for the 2012 Summer Games in London, the international media were gleefully chronicling the myriad of gaffes and shortcomings that have organizers scrambling and issuing statements of reassurance that all will be well. First it was the weather, cold and rainy then suddenly so hot power lines for a new rail service to the Olympic stadium were melting, resulting in delays and shutdowns. Ah yes, transportation, the eternal Achilles heel of every modern Olympics; if it’s not cabbies protesting on the Tower Bridge, it’s everyday commuters fretting through gridlock to allow Olympic officials free passage along exclusive traffic lanes. There are worries about security, as the private company contracted to make the Games safe underestimated the magnitude of the job, necessitating the deployment of the military. Customs agents are threatening to strike. And nobody is sure how much it will all cost in the end. Sound familiar? Two years ago we were sweating many of those very same issues in the days preceding Vancouver’s Winter Olympics. And no one was more vocal in their criticism than the British media; one paper even girded their readers for “the worst Games ever.” But all of the problems were forgotten as soon as Wayne Gretzky lit the Olympic cauldron at Jack Poole Plaza. Just as they likely were when the torch was set ablaze in London. And we’ll all settle in for two weeks of dazzling athletic competition, compelling human interest stories and national pride. We’ll cheer everyone in red and white, but especially for our local heroes. — editorial by the Nanaimo News Bulletin/Black Press

Letters TIME TO GET TO WORK I am dumbfounded at the inability of governments to really do anything meaningful without having a political agenda. Big pharma is still swinging the big stick with threats of, and I quote from Jeff Poston, the executive director of the Canadian Pharmacists Association, “We do caution premiers to tread carefully with respect to drug purchasing to ensure that drug supply is not negatively impacted.” That could be a line out of the Godfather. It is time that drugs and drug supplies are purchased bulk federally. It is time to cut through the domestic politics and leave politics to international negotiations. It is time to have all provinces with the same medical plan to ensure universality under the Charter of Rights and to save the taxpayers money. It is time to set provincial petty differences aside and get the job done. It is time to grow up and get to work! BOB TRITSCHLER Parksville
DRUMS ANNOYING Any organization that sponsors an activity during the summer holidays for the enjoyment or instruction of young people is to be applauded. However, drumming practice in the centre of peaceful Qualicum Beach, 12 hours a day for reportedly a whole month is clearly

argument to grasp, and certainly some of our citizenry will applaud our government’s decision to force Alberta to share the wealth, but those opposed to the pipeline are not wavering. Our rivers and our coastline can’t be bought. We have the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world. Our two largest rivers run through the middle of B.C. Our tourism, our fisheries and our life style depend on maintaining an oil-free coast. Shall we trust the health of our rivers to the Enbridge engineers who just discovered another oil spill yesterday near the site of their infamous Kalamazoo spill? Shall we trust our beautiful island shorelines to foreign owned very large crude carriers? No! SHERI FARINHA Parksville
YET ANOTHER SPILL
Regrettably, tagging happens in undesirable places, defacing private property. In the 1990s, Victoria handled the situation by requesting ID when selling spray paint to young people and recording date and colour of paint with the ID. This curtailed the problem very successfully. Cpl. Jesse Foreman’s idea of photographing the taggers’ works is good and I would add fingerprinting any cans found near the crime scene to be used later in gaining some community service candidates! not appropriate. Homes, businesses, small catering establishments, in the busiest part of town, where heavy noise is in direct line of sound waves is not welcome. Many people, particularly old folk, are being denied their inherent right to enjoyment of their open windows or verandas and sidewalk seating. Seniors who need normal rest and quiet, often after hospital stays, are upset and frustrated. There are surely some better location alternatives. With planning, the drum enthusiasts need not be curtailed in every way. Trumpeting, motor cycle engine testing in the heart of a residential area are even legal activities but common sense dictates the necessity of a suitable venue. RICHARD B. GILMAN Qualicum Beach
Good strategy by the B.C.Liberal party to take a stand on the Enbridge pipeline proposal. But a “principled stand” is beyond their scope. Examination of the consequences of a heavy bitumen (not sweet light crude!) oil spill on our coast, leads to only one conclusion. There is no world class action plan to deal with a catastrophic incident of this type or magnitude. The essence of B.C.’s approval is to obtain a greater share of the royalties. It is an easy

Zoe rebounds from vocal issue
CONTINUED FROM PAGE A3
Zoe was instructed by her doctor to take a break for at least five days, but after seeing her on the fifth day said she would need to take more time off. He told her she might lose her voice halfway through the show but it was her choice whether she wanted to risk it. She decided to do it. The promoter had been looking forward to her performance since she last performed at that venue, when her singing brought him to tears Zoe said she knew she would have to sing differently in order to pull it off, but it came down to faith, she said. “I believed in myself and believed that the music would help heal me and get me through the show. The crowd was amazing and brought me to tears at the end of the night.” It also happened to be Layla’s birthday and afterwards the promoter brought her a cake onstage and the whole crowd sang Happy Birthday. “It was an amazing night where music triumphed over pain,” she said. Layla said she has made some lifestyle changes and has seen a throat specialist in Europe and Canada. She is now back on tour and getting stronger everyday, she said.

Former District 69 resident Layla Zoe is making some changes in order to keep on singing the blues.
In July Zoe opened one of the biggest blues festivals in Quebec the Tremblant International Blues festival on July 6 and then flew to Switzerland to perform on July 14. Upcoming shows include gigs in Quebec, Calgary, France and Belgium in August. October will see her back in
Switzerland and she’ll be performing in the Czech Republic for the first time in the fall. This year Zoe released her fourth music video, Sleep Little Girl, directed by local film maker Richard Olak, which can be found on YouTube. Other highlights this year include a great review in the biggest jazz and blues magazine in Chicago (Downbeat magazine) and the positive outcomes of learning to cope with the trials of life on the road. Although life on the road can be tough, she said, she feels most alive when on stage and on the road. “It is what I was born to do, even with all the extremely difficult challenges along the way.” Zoe still has a lot of fire in her, and she plans to begin work on a new album at the end of 2012. She said her work takes a lot from her body and mind, but gives back so much to her heart and soul and the heart and soul of others. And so, like the song on her new album says, “I’ll keep singing my blues for you, until the day I die.” For more information on Zoe’s music, please visit the Layla Zoe fanpage on Facebook or visit www.layla.ca.
Emergency prep takes a large hit NANAIMO — Emergency planning for Canadian municipalities, regional districts, and search and rescue groups suffered a significant blow with Ottawa’s plan to cancel its Joint Emergency Preparedness Program next March. Established in 1980, the program contributed more than $170 million to enhance the country’s capacity to respond to emergencies or natural disasters. Projects are proposed annually by provincial and territorial governments on behalf of municipalities and regional districts and cost-shared with the feds. The Regional District of Nanaimo received close to $50,000 in JEPP funding since 2004. Jani Drew, RDN emergency coordinator, said the cancellation of the federal portion will affect the objective to be operationally ready at all times to respond and recover from an emergency or disaster. James Lunney, Nanaimo-Alberni Conservative MP, said the program was established because gaps were identified in the ability of local governments and provinces to respond quickly to emergency situations. “A lot of good work has happened over the last several years,” he said. “Emergency preparedness is a provincial responsibility and we feel the capacity has been addressed to the point the program has fulfilled its objectives.” —Nanaimo News Bulletin/Black Press
Helping you better understand annuities
L
et me start by defining what an annuity is: In exchange for a single lump sum deposit, an insurance company makes guaranteed regular income payments to you that contain both interest and a return of principal. Annuity payments can continue for a chosen period of time or for the lifetime(s) of one or two people. Depending on your situation there are different types of annuities that can be used: Life annuities will provide you with guaranteed regular income for life. They can be purchased as a single life, based on one person’s life, or as a joint and survivor, based on the lives of two people. Life annuities can be purchased with or without a guarantee period. Oceanside’s Emma McNichol carves out another silver medal at the BC Summer Games.
BC SUMMER GAMES
It was an exciting weekend of baseball up at Sprinwood Old, as the hometown Reds rallied for silver and punched their ticket to the AA Mosquito Rep provincials. Oceanside opened the three-team roundrobin format tourney with a 10-2 loss to a tough team of Ladysmtih Cannons “in what looked like a case of opening game jitters.” The Reds then split a pair against the Salt Spring Islanders, winning game one 16-6 and coming up short 7-6 in game two. In their final game of the tournament on Sunday against Ladysmith, Oceanside silenced the Cannons with a well-earned 10-7 win. “That game was really a great battle,” said Oceanside Minor Baseball president Mike Parlow. t looks like Nanoose Bay’s Emma McNichol has taken to water sports, like, well, a duck to water actually. “I love it, I really do,” the easy going teen confirmed with a big smile when THE NEWS caught up with her at their family run business where she helps out, CPI Pumps and Irrigation, which is in keeping with the water theme. The 17-year-old carved out three silver medals at the BC Summer Games, finishing second out of a tough field numbering some six competitors in each event — wakeboarding, trick skiing, and ski jumping, and helped Zone 6 win gold in the towed watersports team standings in impressive fashion. Great results for sure, especially in light of the fact she only got her feet wet in the sport three years ago — 2010 was her first year with the Sproat Lake Water Sports Association. The Zone 6 towed water Sports team was coached by Mike Doughty from Port Alberni and made up of 11 Island athletes. Venue for the events was Albert Dyck Park in Abbotsford. According to a post on viwake.wordpres.com “Vancouver Island wakeboarding is a growing sport,” adding that even though it is a male-dominat-

ed sport, “luckily we now have Emma McNichol pushing the way for the new generation of female riders.” Zone 6 sent a towed water sports team of 11 — there were four girls, (two skiers and two wakeboarders), and seven boys. McNichol was the only Oceanside athlete on the team. Summer Games’ rules are such that athletes are only allowed to compete twice from the ages of 10-18. McNichol, 17, is heading into her senior year at Ballenas Secondary School, and said she had a blast in her debut.
“It was a lot of fun. Definitely a lot of people and not very much sleep.” She competed in Wakeboard on the Friday, trick skiing on Saturday, and ski jumping, which is brand new to her, on the Sunday. “I had never really ski jumped before; I started two days before summer games ... that was very unexpected.” Also unexpected was her nailing a 33 foot jump to secure a silver medal. “It was really cool,” she laughed in modest wonder. See GAMES WERE, page A26
From the track comes word the BC Summer Games was an exhilarating competition for a couple District 69 athletes (and their coach). Nanoose Bay resident and Oceanside Track and Field Club sprinter/hurdler Kabir Bellerose captured a bronze medal in the 200m Hurdles with a personal best time of 26.88. He finished seventh in the 200m, and was part of the gold medal winning 4x100m relay team. Bellerose will be heading to Charlottetown, PEI, Aug. 15-21 for the Youth Nationals where he will be competing in the 200m hurdles and 300m. OTFC teammate Tkia King from Nanaimo also had an exceptional games, mining silver in the 1,500m steeplechase to go along with a seventh place finish in the 2,000m and was 10th in the 1200m. OTFC coach Heather Beatty also made the trip to Surrey as she was selected as a coach. Zone 6 finished first out of the eight zones competing at the Games with 38 gold, 31 silver and 32 bronze medals. For complete results go to www.bcgames.org. FOUR GOLD MEDALS, AND SIX SILVER FOR HOEY It has been a busy but rewarding month for Parksville’s Makayla Hoey. A week after helping Zone 6 capture a silver medal in girls basketball at the BC Summer Games, the 13-year-old standout was tearing it up at the BC Junior Development Track and Field Championships. In the mix in Richmond July 2729, Hoey turned in personal bests in seven of the nine events she was entered in, and secured gold medals in the 200m hurdles, shot put, long jump and high jump, to go along with silver medals in

the 100m, 200m, 300m, 80m hurdles and javelin. “In the 100m, 300m and 80m hurdles, she only was behind first place by two to six one hundredths of a second,” one proud Oceanside Track and Field coach Laurie Ritchie said after. “What and amazing end to her track season.” Stay tuned for more OTFC results from the JDs.

He added Ladysmith was looking to run the table and finish 4-0 “and sent out their two best arms against our boys. Turned out our batters liked the faster pitching and our pitching and defence were stellar as well in that one.” Salt Spring finished third with a 1-3 record and only the top two advance to the BCs. Reds’ co-coach Andy Macdonald was duly proud of the whole team and pointed to the play of Brandon Nicoll “who was very strong in all aspects of the game and throughout the tournament. Brandon’s

“I’m definitely not a skier, so it was a lot of fun.” McNichol also picked up a gold medal as part of the TWS’ first place team in their event. Zone 6 (Vancouver Island — Central Coast) dominated team standings, amassing 2,210 points. Zone 3 (Fraser Valley) took silver with 990 points, while Zone 5 (Vancouver-Squamish) won bronze with 870 points. McNichol also plays volleyball and also laces up for the Parksville Rage U18 Rep Girls
softball team that just finished fifth in the province the weekend before the Summer Games . “The Games were a great time — we had a good showing,” confirmed coach Doughty, and agreed “Emma’s a natural athlete and she took to wakeboarding and ski jumping — she’s awesome at it.” “She’s driven, and she’s not scared, which is a big part of wakeboarding,” he said, pointing out, “I taught her to ski jump the week beforer the
Summer Games — she’d only landed one,” he chuckled, then made the point the team also had another first-timer at ski-jumping, “a guy who’s a year older, and she beat him.” UP NEXT McNichol is now ramping up for the wakeboard provincials (at Sproat Lake) in two weeks, “and I’m also on Team BC for wakeboarding, so I’ll also be attending some camps.”

The 34th annual Coombs Bluegrass Festival kicks off this Thursday, August 2.
Grass is turning blue in Coombs Bluegrass Festival to feature the picking style of Dr. Banjo LISSA ALEXANDER
reporter@pqbnews.com
The Coombs Bluegrass Festival starts Thursday night with a bang, as Pete Wernick (aka Dr. Banjo) and his wife Joan Wernick from Colorado take to the stage. “He’s a legend,” said organizer of the festival Linda Thorburn, adding, “They are famous.” The Wernick’s will be followed by the Breakmen, who hail from all over Canada and Thorburn said we’re very lucky to have them in Coombs this year. Afterward the Wernicks will lead an intermediate bluegrass jam and the parkin’ lot pickin’ will begin. Twelve performers will keep patrons at the Coombs Rodeo Grounds smiling all weekend at the festival, which starts Aug. 2 and runs to August 5. Thorburn said she’s been working to get
Dr. Banjo to come run his mini jam classes in Coombs for years and she’s thrilled he accepted. People can sign up for the classes, which run Thursday and Friday, online or at the festival. Dr. Banjo is also holding a free workshop Saturday at noon. The feature band is called Long Road Home and also features Dr. Banjo. They will be performing Friday evening. Other groups include Cloverpoint Drifters, who have been coming to the festival for so long organizers named the place where they always camp “Clover Point.” Rural Delivery, coming from Washington, hasn’t been back for awhile, Thorburn said. The first time she met the banjo player he was just nine years old. “He’s a hot banjo player now,” she said. See BLUEGRASS, page B5

Sculptures to bring Bowser to world stage DELICIOUS U-PICK LISSA ALEXANDER
reporter@pqbnews.com
If Ken Kirkby has his way, Bowser will become a Mecca of magnificent sculptures in 10 years time, attracting tourists to the area and satisfying merchants and artists alike. It will begin August 8 as four local renowned sculptors come together at the Sandbar Cafe in Qualicum Bay, and create their masterpieces at that location during the following three days (August 9,10,11). “It will grow bigger and bigger, and we’re going to fill Bowser with beautiful things made by human beings to attract people from all over the country,” said Kirkby, an accomplished painter living in Bowser. Kirkby said that folks in the area have been complaining tourism numbers are down but nobody seems to be doing anything about it. A number of local merchants are sponsoring the event that will see Oscar Moria, Jerry Strelioff, Dan Chichey and an aboriginal artist known as Junior, each crafting a large sculpture out of wood in the Sandbar Cafe’s parking lot. The sculptures that will be created this year have already been sold, Kirkby said, but will be put in pub-
lic places for people to enjoy. Next year he hopes to have more sculptors participate, eventually having the most amount of sculptures per square feet than anywhere else in the world. This will give people a reason to come to the area, he said, other than the area’s beauty and the fish in Nile Creek. On August 8 starting at 1:30 there will also be a book launch at the Sandbar Cafe, for Kirkby’s new book, Mythography, paintings by Ken Kirkby & Friends, poetry by Manolis. The book features paintings by Kirkby and other local artists like Dan Gray, Brian Buckrell, Cindy Mawle, Allan Dunfield and Nana Cook, among others. Each painting is accompanied by a poem written by Greek poet and publisher Manolis, based in White Rock. The poems successfully “get into the skin” of each painting, Kirby said, adding Manolis is a brilliant man. Proceeds from the book will go to the Nile Creek Enhancement Society, of which Kirkby is the president. The carvers will assemble a little after the book launch begins, Kirkby said, and will carve from early until late on August 9, 10 and 11.

Artists from around Vancouver Island and even Alberta got out of their studios and onto the streets of Qualicum Beach July 28 for the Grand Prix d’Art. For the past 20 years the event has attracted top notch plein air painters and hundreds of spectators and this year 44 artists participated and helped the Old School House Arts Centre (TOSH) mark its 100 year milestone in the community. The Grand Prix d’Art is a race of competing artists who must complete a work of art en plein air (working outside on location, not in a studio) within three hours and this year’s first place winner competed in the event for the first time ever. Susan Woolgar from Lethbridge, Alberta took top honors for her pastel depicting the town hall. TOSH executive director Corinne James said it is rare they have an out of area artist who comes in and wins the whole thing, but agreed Woolgar did have prime real estate to work with. “There were great artists out there and she beat the pants off everybody. She is obviously an accomplished artist,” James admitted. Each plein air painter was assigned a location by lottery and their work had to represent or be inspired by something or a person that was visible from the assigned location. Second place went to Dan Gray. The Errington artist is the one who initiated the event and he has been in every race since its inception. His pastel depicting the activity surrounding the site of the 100th birthday fairgrounds
around TOSH was purchased immediately. All of the pieces are on display at TOSH until August 12 and many of them are still available to buy. The sixth annual calendar of the best 12 paintings will be designed and sold as a fundraiser for the arts centre. James said Nanaimo artist John Hofman who came in third for his painting of TOSH has also painted in all 20 races and he is donating his piece to the gallery. She admitted it will be extra special because it commemorates their 100th anniversary. “It will be a permanent piece in our hall of frames.” Visitors were encouraged to watch the process and the progress of the artists at the various locations in Qualicum Beach and James said a lot of visitors picked up maps and watched the action. The painters had to complete their work within the three-hour limit and have the paintings in display condition, titled and priced for sale no later than one hour after completion. A panel of three judges: Merv Brandel, Donna Baspaly and Sherry Mitchell then had the tough job of determining the winners. After much deliberation they chose what they considered to be the best and ribbons as well as cash prizes were presented to the top three, as well six honourable mentions were given out to David Goatley from Victoria, Marilyn Timms from Courtenay, Sheena McCorquodale out of Qualicum Bay, Nanaimo’s Eunmi Conacher, Mark Glavina from Steveston and Vancouver’s Mike Radford. James said the event was a fantastic day for Qualicum Beach and TOSH.

VestaFire Entertainment to show how to do it up right at Parksville beach show LISSA ALEXANDER
reporter@pqbnews.com
Bring the whole family down to Parksville Beach this Saturday and enjoy a treasure hunt that comes complete with pirates, ďŹ re, jugglers and stilt walkers. That’s because VestaFire Entertainment from Nanaimo will be hosting the event, specializing in ďŹ re and LED shows. The entertainers also play with poi (swinging tethered weights in a variety of patterns), stilts, hoops and other props. Founder and Troup co-ordinator Karina Strong recently travelled with Spark Circus to the Burma/Thailand border teaching circus and performance at Burmese orphanages, migrant schools and refuge camps. She took her family with her: husband, seven-year-old daughter and three-year-old son. “It’s a way to bring joy to the people in need in disadvantaged countries,â€? she said, adding the people she met had nothing and really
appreciated the shows and the donation of circus toys. The work was all volunteer and Strong said it was a really great experience. VestaFire was down at Parksville Beach teaching circus lessons last week, and that will continue this Thursday, Aug 2, from 7 to 9 p.m., with admission by donation. Strong’s daughter Jenna is also a performer and can be seen doing tricks with her glow hoop or sauntering around on stilts. On August 4, VestaFire will host the treasure hunt at 1 p.m. for the Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition (BeachFest), followed by their ďŹ re show around 9 p.m. (when it gets dark enough). Strong said people will get to see their regular, spectacular show, only bigger and longer with extra surprises and guests. “It will have a bit of a fah wooomph bonus,â€? she said. Catch the group again on August 9 and then on August

Activities included the popular Grand Prix d’Art (see page B7 for more), an Art in Action art festival as well as entertainment throughout the day on a stage in the parking lot. Magician Floyd Campbell drew some laughs with his short but sweet show and a taiko drumming concert filled all the seats as members of the recently held workshops showed off their skills. Meanwhile, a pack of photographers taking part in the Day in the Life of Qualicum Beach: Qualicum at Play were omnipresent throughout the community, snapping street shots throughout the day. These photographs will be juried and displayed at TOSH in February, as well as in THE NEWS.
