Bennett-Awad injured after being thrown from horse MONIQUE TAMMINGA Times Reporter

Langley Olympic equestrian rider Hawley Bennett-Awad is recovering in a London hospital after being thrown from her horse, Gin & Juice, at the cross country event on Monday. The Murrayville native was taken to Royal London Hospital, where she was being treated for a concussion “which is improving significantly,”and a stable sacral fracture, according to a release from the Canadian Olympic Committee. It’s reported that her horse wasn’t injured in the fall. Bennett-Awad’s husband had posted on her Facebook page that she was OK and asking about her horse. He also posted a picture of her in her hospital bed, giving a thumbs up. The fall means 35-year-old Bennett-Awad’s has been eliminated from competition and that her Olympic dreams for London are over. She was the top Canadian — sitting 31st overall — heading into Monday’s event. Bennett-Awad was the second rider to get hurt on Monday morning. Another Canadian, Peter Barry, crashed on the course, but wasn’t injured. The course, situated at London’s Greenwich Park, is reported to have razor-sharp turns, blind two-metre drops and tricky jumps. Bennett-Awad was a member of Canada’s team that won silver at the 2010 World Equestrian Games.

Two years for fatal crash driver Mission resident, 17, died in 2007 crash along 0 Ave. MONIQUE TAMMINGA Times Reporter

A driver who killed one of his young passengers and injured three others in a horrific crash in 2007 on 0 Avenue in Langley was sentenced to two years in jail on Thursday. Antonio Santini, 32, was also sentenced to 18 months probation and faces a five year driving ban after he gets out of jail. He has to pay a victim surcharge and was ordered to provide the courts with a DNA sample.

The crash killed 17-year-old Mission resident Renee Newson. In January, Santini, who is from Mission, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and two charges of dangerous driving causing bodily harm back in in B.C. Supreme Court in New Westminster. At the time of the deadly crash, Santini, then 27, offered to take Newson, who was an acquaintance of his, and her friends out and drive them around. The crash occurred when Santini’s 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier sedan, traveling west bound on 0 Avenue at a high rate of speed, lost control on a speed hump, sending the car airborne, shearing off a utility pole, rolling several times and coming to rest upside-down in the middle of Boundary Road, on the U.S. side of the bor-

der. Newson was ejected from her vehicle and ended up in a ditch on the U.S. side of the road. It’s believed she was wearing a seatbelt and the impact of the crash also dislodged and ejected the car’s seat. A friend of Newson’s told The Times back in 2007, that her father saw the Cavalier after the crash and said there was nothing left of it. It’s unknown what injuries Santini suffered. Police attributed the accident to excessive speed. The other girls in the car suffered various degrees of non-life-threatening injuries. The court also learned that Santini had been in another collision following this crash. It isn’t known why it took five years for the case to go through the courts.

Honey heist at bee farm

5,200 bottles of wine stolen MONIQUE TAMMINGA Times Reporter

It may be the largest heist of wine in B.C. history and it happened at a south Langley boutique winery. Sometime in the evening of July 19, thieves broke the lock on the gate of Blackwood Lane Vineyards and Winery and took 10 tonnes of wine. In all, more than 5,200 bottles of hand-crafted wine from the small but high-end winery were taken, making it a more than $200,000 loss for the owners. While insurance may cover the financial loss, money can’t replace their product, with the grapes grown in the Okanagan and then put in French barrels

and bottled in unique Blackwood label bottles. Most of Blackwood Lane wine is sold at high-end restaurants and some VQA stores. “To take that much wine is shocking,” said Carlos Lee, owner of Blackwood Lane Winery. The break-in occurred sometime between 6 p.m. when Lee locked up the premises, and 11 a.m. when he returned to work the next day. That’s when he found the lock on the gate had been cut. The culprits stole three pallets of 2007 Alliance, one pallet each of cabernet sauvignon and rose, and one pallet and

16 cases of 2006 Alliance. The Alliance bordeaux is their signature wine and sells at around $60 per bottle. The theft didn’t decimate their stock of Alliance. But a small run of their cabernet sauvignon was completed wiped out. “It was very targeted. They seemed to have a lot of knowledge of our location and even the location of the security cameras,” said Lee. The pallets were left behind so that means the thieves had to take out each box of wine and load them onto a truck. Lee said for that amount to leave the vineyard they would

have to have a specialty truck. Lee is offering a $25,000 reward that leads to the arrest of the perpetrators. He’s hopeful for the return of his wine. “They are going to have a hard time finding a buyer. We are making it difficult for them to move our wine,” said Lee. He said a restaurant wouldn’t buy it without checking with them first. In the meantime, the vineyard security is being stepped up. Lee said he’s talked to many people in his industry and this large of heist is unheard of. In fact, thefts at wineries are fairly uncommon, he said. An estimated 8,000 pounds of honey was stolen along with approximately 500,000 bees from a bee farm on 0 Avenue. On Thursday, July 26 an Abbotsford bee keeper went to one of his hive locations in the 27600 block of 0 Avenue, near the Langley border. Upon inspection he discovered that almost 100 hive frames had been removed along with the bees and honey, said Abbotsford Police who are now investigating. The economic loss to the farm is estimated at around $100,000. “Obviously this theft required equipment and expertise as dealing with this number of bees and hives can be dangerous,” said Abbotsford Police spokesperson Const. Ian MacDonald. This is the second unusual and targeted theft in two weeks. On July 19, 5,200 bottles of handcrafted wine was stolen from Blackwoods Lane winery in Aldergrove. The targeted theft will nearly wipe out their entire stock for the year. For the bee theft, the hives were not tended to on a daily basis by the bee keeper, said MacDonald. In fact he had last inspected the location in early July. The hives were located away from the roadway and would not be easily observed by passersby. “That said it is possible that someone observed some aspect of the theft which may have occurred between July 7 and July 26. Because of the need for equipment and transportation it is likely someone observed the removal of the hive frames, bees and honey,” said MacDonald. The Abbotsford Police Department is requesting the public’s assistance with this investigation. Anyone with information about the theft is asked to contact the APD at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The second fire to hit Walnut Grove in a week has heavily damaged a house. All three occupants escaped unharmed from the blaze which broke out shortly before 5 a.m. yesterday (Monday) at 9457 214B St. Township fire department spokesman Bruce Ferguson said initial estimates put the loss at $150,000. On July 24, a fire at 8992 203B St. caused between $70,000 and $150,000 damage. No one was in that house when firefighters arrived. Damage to the 214 B Street house is so extensive that it

Pool funding ‘challenging’ Times Reporter

When Mayor Jack Froese challenged Glen Valley residents to find the funds the Township had expected from the sale of 21 acres of forest, he inadvertently — and significantly— underestimated the loss in revenue to the Township. Froese challenged the residents to come up with $2 million, the amount he indicated the Township would lose after it pulled down the For Sale signfrom the forested land. In fact, the Township was anticipating around $3 million, which would have represented a good chunk of the Aldergrove Elementary school site it wants to acquire for a pool, ice rink and community centre. Three independent appraisers

have valued the land at $3.7 million. Last September, the School District obtained ministerial approval under the government’s land disposal process to sell the property, which has been vacant since the school closed in June, 2007. That process requires school districts to offer the land to other levels of government once it has been established that it is not needed as a school. Meanwhile, Glen Valley residents have formed Watchers of Langley Forests (WOLF), pledging to find ways of amassing the $2 million. The money is a fraction of the eventual cost of Aldergrove’s new community centre. On July 23, council endorsed two options for the centre, with elements that include a pool and ice

rink. The Township will present these for public feedback in the autumn. Both will cost at least $33 million. “Funding for this project will be a major challenge which still has to be addressed,” parks and recreation director David Leavers wrote in a report to council. The Township will realize savings once the Aldergrove Arena and Parkside outdoor pool have been decommissioned, and will pursue grants from the provincial and federal governments, and dip into its reserves and surpluses. Partnerships to help pay for the facility may also be considered, much along the lines of the arrangement the Langley Events Centre has with Trinity Western University and the Langley School District.

Leisure pool will be indoors A report compiled for Township’s July 23 meeting did not make clear that in the two options for an aquatic centre in Aldergrove, the leisure pool component for both would be an indoor facility. Parks and Recreation

direction David Leavers said that it is only a lap pool in one of the options that would be built outdoors. Both options ensure that the leisure pool would be used all year round. The Township has committed

Motorists frustrated by delays along Fraser Highway can blame the weather. Construction on widening the road from the Langley City border to just west of the 216 Street intersection has slowed the pace for about a month. If Mother Nature co-operates, the widened road will be finished during the week of Aug. 6, said Duane Odenbach, who is managing the project for the Township. The final lift of pavement has been poured. One of the areas crews are working on is a dip in the eastbound lanes where the newly widened road meets the two lanes of existing pavement near McDonald’s restaurant. Over the next few days, crews will be painting lines, placing concrete barriers along the centre median, and installing the last of the street lights. Coupled with the replacement of

the Nicomekl bridge at Old Yale Road in the City, the Fraser Highway project has inconvenienced motorists for about three years now. The widening of this section began in September and was to have been completed by the end of June, Odenbach said. “Considering the amount of rain we’ve had we have done quite well,” he said. Once complete, the drive to work or the shops with be smoother for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. The project includes a shared bicycle and pedestrian pathway along the south side of Fraser Highway. This path, reached by the sidewalk on the south side of Fraser Highway, will lead walkers to an upgraded and illuminated pedestrian underpass which was once used as a passageway for cows to travel under the road from one pasture to another. The total cost of the project is $4.2 million, half of which is funded by TransLink.

Road at Langley airport named for former mayor, John Beales NATASHA JONES Times Reporter

Only days after it officially named the 200 Street pedestrian overpass after an unknown two-yearold boy who watched excitedly as it was being built, Langley Township council announced it is naming an airport access road after John Beales, a pilot, philanthropist and former mayor and school trustee. The $1.7 million Cole Harmony pedestrian overpass, which takes walkers from one side of 200 Street to the other at 68 Avenue, is named after Cole McDonald, and his aunt, Harmony. The bridge opened in May, 2011. Its naming was harshly condemned after Councillor Kim Richter proposed it “in honour” of the pair. The naming had first been suggested by Cole’s father. Councillor Grant Ward was the only council member to

vote against the name last year, arguing that council failed to follow its own policy governing the naming of fixed assets such as bridges. This practice is normally reserved for citizens who have a lengthy service to the Township. The road which will honour the late mayor is a paved and tree-lined access road which runs parallel to 56 Avenue on the northern edge of Langley Regional Airport. Beales served as trustee from 1957 to 1960, and was Township mayor from 1987 to 1993. He died on June 30, 2003, a few weeks before his 79th birthday. After the death of Beales, his son, Russell, described his father as a “social butterfly who loved having people around, loved telling stories about himself and everyone around.” One of those was Steve Ferguson. Beales

took the rookie councillor, helped him cut his political teeth and took him under his wing for two terms. Beales took Ferguson flying several times, often to look at areas that were the subject of issues at the council table at the time.

“He loved to look at Langley from his airplane,” Ferguson said. “He had a great love for Langley.” John Beales Way is to be officially commemorated, Mayor Jack Froese said, but a date has not yet been set.

anada’s crime rate is at a 30-year low, but despite this good news story, people still feel the justice system is too lax on criminals. Recent sentencings, like that of shamed senior RCMP officer Monty Robinson, give credence to people’s cries of foul. For obstructing justice in the hitand-run death of Orion Hutchinson, he received a small conditional sentence and a temporary curfew. This is in contrast to the sentencing of the Stanley Cup rioters. Some young men being sentenced for taking part in the riot are receiving seven to nine months jail time for their part. This may seem either harsh or just in the eyes of the public. But in comparison, most child pornography convictions rarely receive jail time. A conditional sentence is the most common sentence for the crime, even if the perpetrator is not just looking at child porn but distributing it. Convicted pedophiles usually do see the inside of a jail cell, but sentences range and usually aren’t longer than two years — nothing in comparison to the lifetime conviction they have inflicted on their victims. It is particularly troubling that in this study on crime rates, the offence which saw the largest increase was child pornography, which jumped 40 per cent in 2011 from 2010, say police. Going hand-in-hand with this are sexual violations against children, which are on the rise as well. The judicial system doesn’t appear to take sexual crimes against children as seriously as it does rioters or even tax evaders. A recent sentencing of a Surrey man who went on a house robbing spree put him behind bars for eight years. The provincial government wanted to send a strong message that those who riot will pay for the crime they committed. The message was heard loud and clear by our judges who by B.C. judicial standards, are handing down harsh sentences. If our government can carry that kind of weight and influence with the provincial judicial system in sending a message of deterrence for rioting, can it not send an even stronger message to protect our children from predators?

ho says it doesn’t pay to be a politician? With the B.C. Liberals in a freefall and the provincial election 10 months away, a number of MLAs have decided to leave politics. Much is made by some about the sacrifices made by politicians, of the time spent away from family, of the decision to take a break from their career passion – all to serve the public good. While it is always admirable to see men and women take an active part in the democratic process, make no mistake – it is a decision that often pays dividends far beyond anything a working stiff will ever realize. Surrey-Tynehead MLA Dave Hayer is one of the latest B.C. Liberals to decide against seeking re-election next year. According to Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation (CTF) figures, Hayer’s 12 years in office will give him an annual pension that will start at $47,600 when he turns 65 and climb to $62,900 when he turns 80. The CTF estimates Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Kevin Krueger will enjoy an annual pension of $87,700 when he turns 65, rising to $115,700 when he turns 80. The MLA pension plan is indeed gold-plated as taxpayers chip in $4 for every dollar the MLA contributes. The B.C. Liberals, under then-leader Gordon Campbell, campaigned in the 1996 election against exorbitant pension plans. The NDP won and implemented a reasonable plan, in which taxpayers match every dollar the MLA contributed. In 2007, however, Campbell reversed his position and brought back a ridiculously rich pension, even allowing MLAs to buy back years lost. Political pension plans are a disgrace and do nothing to counter the perception (which is reality) that entering the political arena is the path to setting yourself up for life. — Agassiz-Harrison Observer.

City resident welcomes green bin recycling

Get busy and pave Old Yale Road Editor: Yes, yes, yes, let’s get on with the job. (Council debates future of Old Yale Road, The Times, July 24). I completely disagree with spending $100,000 for a study. Spend the money where it belongs, paving this absurd and dangerous stretch of road that is now an important artery. The Five Corners roundabout and the lights at Fraser Highway and Old Yale encourage more traffic on Old Yale Road — both intelligent engineering. I have been suggesting to anyone listening over the last three years that the Heritage (Advisory) Committee is out of touch. A concrete road is not important heritage just because it is concrete. I have also suggested that if a concrete road is so important to the Heritage (Advisory) Committee, take a couple of big chunks and put up an obelisk at either end of that section of Old Yale and attach bronze plaques to them. They could also crush a chunk of the concrete and sell pieces to interested parties. Put a big chunk in the museum. Put on the thinking caps, and save the tires and wheel alignment on my car. The City of Langley to their credit had the courage to do the right thing when they paved their section of Old Yale. I hope the Township of Langley demonstrates the same resolve. Rian Martin Langley

It’s time for ban on shark fins The

Natasha JONES/Langley Times

School sign outside James Hill Elementary has been flipped for the summer holiday.

Flipping school signs is a waste of time and money Editor: I would like to know who the genius is at the Township of Langley who decides to flip over the school zone speed limit signs during the summer months when school is out. In my neighborhood this job was performed this week and the signs will likely be put back into proper position in a little over one month when the kids are set to return to school. This practice bothers me for a couple of reasons. Most important is that these signs are still in school and park zones that are frequented by children and families throughout the summer season. The other reason I am bothered by this Editor: I am a Chinese Canadian and speak for those Chinese Canadians who are compassionate and environmentally aware, and not motivated by the money that is the shark-fin-dealer’s only concern. Over 50 species of sharks are on the endangered list, and sharks are extremely slow

is it is a huge waste of taxpayers’ money. Imagine how many school zone signs are scattered throughout the TOL and how much it costs to turn them over twice per year. Not to mention the cost of fuel to do the job. Extrapolate the cost over 10-20 years and one can imagine how wasteful this practice is. I imagine that a TOL manager has a son or daughter who needs work for the summer and this is an easy way to make a few bucks. That was a nasty comment, but this does not make sense. I hope that someone at the TOL can explain this to me. Jon Weenk Langley

Editor: When I moved back “home” to beautiful British Columbia after 10 years away, I would never have thought that one of the things I would miss about the Halton Region of Ontario would have been the waste management services. At the time, Langley was only beginning to experiment with green waste and it felt foreign and wrong to have to throw organic kitchen waste into a garbage can. And so it is exciting to hear that Langley City is looking toward strategies to reduce waste through use of the green bin. I’m sure their efforts will have naysayers who fear the change but, having been through this transition before in another community, I can testify that most people went from a weekly garbage pick up to a bi-weekly cycle (with weekly recycling and green waste) with very little effort. Looking back afterwards, I couldn’t believe the amount of waste our family was sending to the landfill before bylaws forced us to make a better choice. I know there are other options (home composting, etc.) but as a busy mother of three little ones I am thankful that the municipality offers a simpler route to make greener choices in this area. Debra Blackman Langley

is going to pay for that? In allowing shark fins to be sold within a municipality, that municipality is in violation not only of the CITES law of no international trade of endangered species, it violates Canada’s own WAPPRIITA law which forbids trading in endangered species products within Canada.

Canada’s own Fisheries Act specifically forbids shark finning. Some advocate the gradualistic voluntary withdrawal approach, but this would take decades to take significant effect. The sharks just don’t have the time. An outright ban is needed, and needed now. Anthony Marr Vancouver

Possible bobcat sighting in Willoughby MONIQUE TAMMINGA Times Reporter

There may be a bobcat currently prowling around the Willoughby area, said one resident who thinks she spotted the beautiful creature on July 19. Shirley Nielson said her daughter first spotted the large, marked cat walking at the back of their two and a half acre property at 20152 82 Ave.

She went out and saw the cat for herself. “It was brown, the size of an average dog with pokey ears, white tufts at the ears and a bobbed tail,” said Nielsen. “We’ve lived here since 1989 and have never seen a bobcat or a lynx. We see plenty of deer and coyotes.” She believes that with all the development along 208 Street, wildlife is being pushed out of

areas that were once heavily treed. Another resident, Patricia Tallman, has been asking for a wildlife corridor for that area and has been collecting data about the amount of roadkill along that Willoughby road since it was redeveloped. Elsewhere in Langley, there have been cougar sightings in the Newlands area, but no other recorded bobcat sight-

ings, except for at Critter Care wildlife rehabilitation centre. There, Hoover, the bobcat, is a resident and ambassador for the not-for-profit rehab centre. Hoover, now 11, came to Langley as a baby plucked from Whistler by a woman who thought she could keep her as a pet. It was too late to return her to the wild, so she now resides in a heavily wooded enclosure on the South Langley property.

nrequited love, a little cross dressing, a few cases of mistaken identity and a bit of good old fashioned mischief. It’s a combination that can’t help but delight and amuse, as Bard in the Valley returns with its third season offering — a production of one of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies, Twelfth Night, in Douglas Park. Written in the early 1600s, Twelfth Night follows Viola, a young aristocratic woman who finds herself shipwrecked on the shores of Illyria and disguises herself as her twin brother Sebastian (whom, she assumes, was lost at sea) in order to protect her virtue in this strange land. While dressed as a man, Viola catches the eye of Olivia, a young noblewoman who is coveted by Duke Orsino. The Duke, in turn, is beloved by a disguised Viola. As in all of Shakespeare’s comedies the play ends in a flurry of couplings and happily ever afters. The fun part, is getting there. Stepping into the lead role of Viola for BITV’s production is Caroline Dearden, a 20-year-old Langley actress. Dearden, who played Phoebe in last year’s production of As You Like It, didn’t go into auditions with any particular part in mind, but said winning her first lead role has been both a thrill and a challenge. “I’ve kind of been discovering new things about Viola each time I go to rehearsal,” said the actress. “She’s very strong and has strong ideas. She’s sympathetic to Olivia and understands what it’s like to be in love with someone who can’t love you back.” Beyond the laughs it provides, Twelfth Night is imbued with a level of insight that spans the centuries since it was penned. “Shakespeare was a very keen observer of human nature,” said Dearden, adding the play is “quite brilliantly written and quite relevant today.” While she loves the open environment of the outdoor Spirit Square stage in Langley City, performing live theatre in a park presents some rather unique challenges, the young actress acknowledged. “Last year, a young gentleman walked up on stage (during a performance). Everyone just kept going,” she said, with a laugh. Then there was the fallout of the blistering August heat the year before. During its inaugural season, while performing A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the concrete around the stage burned the bare feet of the faeries and had to be hosed down between acts. But the water evaporated almost as quickly as it was splashed on.

Miranda GATHERCOLE/Langley Times

Langley’s Caroline Dearden plays Viola and VG Winter of Coquitlam is Duke Orsino in Bard in the Valley’s production of Twelfth Night. The Langley-based Shakespeare company returns to the Spirit Square Stage on Aug. 9.

“It was really, really hot,” recalled Jacq Ainsworth, who performed as a tree in that production. This year, Jacq has slipped into the director’s chair, alongside her mother, June Ainsworth. “She’s the one with all the experience. She’s the one with all the vision and she’s letting me play,” laughed Jacq. For the younger Ainsworth, that has meant working closely with the Caroline actors to help them finetune their performances. Neither woman was sure how the performers would respond to having two directors. “It can be difficult for the actors at first, because they don’t know who’s boss,” said June. But it’s working, the women agree. “I’m telling the big story,” said June. “Jacq is working on the finer details. It takes a lot of the pressure off me, because I totally trust what she can do. “She has skills. She’s seen me direct, she knows where I’m coming from.” Of course, one of the first things a

director must do to get any production rolling is select their performers. Because the plot of Twelfth Night calls for an actor and actress similar enough to pass as twins who could be mistaken for one another, casting was a challenge, June conceded. “We managed to get two dark-haired people who are about the same build,” she said. Beyond that, she said, audiences are asked to suspend their disbelief and Dearden actress just enjoy the mayhem created by the confusion. In Shakespeare’s day, all the roles — including the women — were played by men. In Bard in the Valley’s case, however, a shortage of male performers has turned that tradition on its head. Three male roles have been combined into one character, to be played by a male actor. That worked out in that the character is able to go into both Olivia’s and Orsino’s courts, Jacq explained. “He gets an overview and becomes our guide. We get to see the full story from his perspective.”

“I’ve kind of been discovering new things about Viola each time I go to rehearsal.”

A number of other masculine roles in the production, meanwhile, have been filled by women. That’s led to a bit of a plot twist, Jacq revealed. “Just by virtue of having to cast some women in men’s roles we found another love triangle,” she said. Which characters, exactly could be caught up in it? Well, say the directors, you’ll just have to come to a performance and see. Twelfth Night runs from Thursday to Sunday, Aug. 9 to 12 and Aug. 16-19 on the Spirit Square stage in Douglas Park. On Aug. 25 and 26 it moves to the International Festival at Langley Events Centre. The plan is to have a truck at the Douglas Park location, selling hotdogs and cold drinks, said June. Some chairs will be set out, but audiences are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket with them. Evening performances begin at 7 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Admission is free, but the drama group will be accepting donations to help them with ongoing expenses and to enable them to mount future productions.

Stage coach season wraps with promise of summer workshop Stage Coach Theatre Arts School brought its year to an end with an original musical, Not Another Snow White Story. It was a roaring success, said StageCoach principal, Kim Stordy. The students, aged four to 16, deserve a pat on the back, said Stordy, who encouraged them to “breathe in and cherish their accomplishments. Students from all over the Fraser Valley staged their very first production on June 16, drawing more than 250 audience members to Langley Christian Elementary Campus for the original adaptation of the Grimm’s tale, Snow White. It was written and produced by StageCoach drama teacher Shane Rochon, co-directed, choreographed and conducted by Miranda Guimond (singing teacher), Loryn LeGear (early stages teacher), Beverly Cheung (dance teacher), and Lauren Wade (early stages assistant). Energy from the students prior to the performance was “bubbling on high heat, Stordy said. “What a delightful journey this year has been. StageCoach Theatre Arts School is largely about process, not just the end product, she said. adding that students made major strides to develop life and stage skills every Saturday throughout the year. Students surprised themselves, she said. “Applying effort, dedication, creativity and a positive attitude, one can overcome personal obstacles and challenges, she said. Seeing these students interact with each other has been “awesome, she said. StageCoach’s philosophy is to develop performing arts skills and an appreciation of musical theatre while building self-confidence, communication skills, and self-esteem. It teaches elementary skills of singing, dance and drama in one venue. Students exhibit a range of talent.

There were plenty of smiles on Sunday morning in Walnut Grove as athletes crossed the finish line. Nearly 300 youths between the ages of three and 15 took part in the Sun Rype TRi KiDS race. The miniature triathlon saw the competitors swim in the Walnut Grove Aquatic Centre, a bike ride in the parking lot, and then a run through the parking lot and on the track at Walnut Grove Secondary School. The race is a non-competitive event designed to be fun, encouraging and a memorable experience for the participants. See more photos at www.langleytimes.com.

The North Shore Twins shocked the Langley Blaze, taking them out two games to none in their opening round quarter-final playoff series. The Twins pitching staff did a masterful job, not allowing a single run as they won 3-0 and 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at McLeod Park in the best-of-three B.C. Premier Baseball League playoff series.

The Blaze (39-9) were the top seed while the Twins (22-26) were the eighth seed. In game one, North Shore scored twice in the top of the first inning on a pair of unearned runs and then tacked on a third run in the third inning. North Shore pitcher Kyle Olver allowed just three hits and one walk in a complete

game effort. Marc Andre Habeck was tagged with the loss. In the second game, the Twins scored runs in the third and sixth innings and that was more than enough offence for Jordan Kellof, who went the distance, allowing seven hits and no walks over seven innings. Jon Bauer was tagged with the loss.

Trailing 4-1 through three innings, the Langley Senior Blaze pulled off the comefrom-behind victory. The Blaze added runs in both the top of the fourth and fifth innings and then scored twice in the seventh and final inning to complete the 5-4 comeback over the Coquitlam Angels. The two senior men’s baseball teams were playing in the championship final for the Pacific Metro Baseball League on July 25 at Robert Burnaby Park in Burnaby. Langley advances to the provincial championships in Prince George beginning on Aug. 3. The Blaze loaded the bases in the seventh with one out. Tyler Willson then scored Graig Merritt with an RBI single to tie the game, and then following the second out, Scott Webster scored on a wild pitch. Dillon Reynolds took the mound in the bottom of the seventh and had a one-twothree inning. He was one of four Blaze pitchers who worked the game as Ryan Eiswerth, Aaron Dick and Keenan Takatch all worked two innings. Jesse Peters hit a second inning solo home run for the Blaze as well as another RBI in the fourth.
