Killer for hire case stayed
Suzanne Brendeland case won’t be going ahead
NEIL HORNER
news@pqbnews.com
A 47-year-old Parksville woman is likley breathing a big sigh of relief this week after the Crown stayed all charges against her in an alleged murder for hire case. The ordeal for Suzanne Brendeland began last August 27, when she was arrested for allegedly plotting to have her estranged husband, killed in a murder-for-hire plot. The charges stem from an August 23 report to police by her 40-year-old estranged husband, Randy Brendeland, who said he believed his wife was trying to hire people to kill him. A police investigation into the claim turned up two local men who confirmed they were approached by a woman who tried to hire them to kill her husband. Neither of the men reportedly accepted the offer. Police said the couple separated just over one year ago and their disputes appear to have been escalating over that period. The estranged couple filed divorce papers in family court in July. Randy Brendeland worked as a fitness instructor, while Suzanne Brendeland worked until recently at a moving and storage company. They moved to Vancouver Island in 2009. Although the charges have been stayed, that doesn’t mean the case has been thrown out and it could be brought forward at a later date, should new evidence arise. Because of this, a publication ban on evidence brought forward in the case remains in place.

Water restrictions on tap AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
While the current hot dry weather is perfect for the beach, the City of Parksville is moving to Water Conservation Level 3 to ensure a steady supply. Under the system coordinated with the Regional District of Nanaimo last year, the city is on Level 2 restrictions automatically during the summer unless conditions call for more. On July 18 the city moved to Level 3, the toughest restriction next to a complete ban. This allows one hour of watering at a time for a total of
two hours on specified days between 6 - 10 a.m. and 6 10 p.m. Odd numbered addresses can water on odd numbered days, even numbered on even days. Multi-unit buildings can divide the watering by unit number or irrigation zone to ensure the net effect is half the watering is done in two hours each day. This requires prior written consent of the city. Vegetable gardens, shrubs, trees and flowers can only be watered with a hand held container or a hose with a shutoff nozzle outside the permitted times. Vehicles, RVs and boats may be washed with a hand held container or shutoff nozzle hose.

Few of us look particularly majestic when we first emerge from the bath and even the most stunning wild creatures are no exception, as photographer Brian Markle found out with this stunning photo of an eagle doing its morning ablutions in the Nanoose Bay area. It took a serious preening to get back to anything resembling the awesome predator of legend.

THANK YOU
QUALICUM BEACH DAY SUPPORTERS!
Our first-ever Beach Day event was a complete success with well over 2,000 attendees. We even managed to fit it in between two rainy days! It was a fitting celebration to Qualicum Beach’s 70th Anniversary. A large number of businesses, organizations, Town staff, musicians and individuals all worked together to bring this event to your Beach. It was highly gratifying for all who came out and had good Beach fun. Kwalli Seagull now has a name, thanks to Arnold!

F
ears that the weather would turn foul for Qualicum Beach’s Beach Day celebration on Saturday proved unfounded, as the sun peeked through the clouds and crowds flocked to the waterfront to take part in the
fun. That flocking was aided by a small fleet of electric cars donated by local businesses for the event, which featured a giant tug-of-war, parachute games, disc golf, a beach sein, historical bathing costume show, food, music and much, much more. The day kicked off with a traditional blessing by Adam Dick and Kim Recalma-Clutesi, along with family members and wrapped up as the tide slowly ate up the available sand. Organizers were delighted with the turnout and vowed to make it the first of many annual celebrations of the spectacular Qualicum Beach waterfront.

The Kulth Music Festival at the Coombs Rodeo Grounds July 20, 21 and 22 was a big hit for music fans (above). Not only did Wil (below) impress the two legged fans, but the four legged variety as well. The rain held off during a riveting performance Sunday afternoon by the Qualicum Beach musician.

An exciting cauldron of electronic, folk, reggae, jazz, dance and Island music was on tap at the Coombs Rodeo Grounds over the weekend and those who pitched their tents for the second annual Kulth Festival are raving about the great music and the overall experience at the event. Organizers are also pleased with how the weekend went and David Fisher agreed the bands and the fans were great. “We had a 99 per cent approval rating from the fans,” he said.

Fisher said although there were a few noise complaints from some of the campers who were next door at the Coombs Country Campground, the event for the most part went smoothly and he feels it is a great asset for the community because of the economic spin off it creates for the local area. “There were 30 businesses involved in the show that were local. The Frontiersman Pub was happy because they got lots of business from us and the cab companies were busy,” he claimed. See KULTH, page A7

Kulth Festival noisy but good clean family fun

Alvin Brooks and his three-year old grandson Kalan Kulak of Parksville are among the thousands of visitors who flocked to Parksville’s Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Exhibition. Nancy Nedokus who operates the campground beside the site said some of her guests were not happy about the noise but she said they were warned ahead of time about the music festival and she agreed that anytime there is an event at the rodeo grounds they have to bite the bullet and live with it. “We don’t live in a bubble,” she admitted. Fisher said they made a point of structuring the site so there would be no problems and they also made an effort to deal with the noise issues but agreed it is hard to control the festival campers who are there to have fun well into the night. “People come to a festival to have a good time and people having fun makes noise. Renting the whole Coombs Country Campground could be a good solution,” he declared. Organizers were really impressed with how respectful festival patrons were towards the grounds. When the campers checked in they were handed a bio bag for their food waste and garbage bags and at the end of the weekend the site was not a big mess.
“People put everything into the right slots. I have been doing this for a long time and now people are catching on more. We gave them the opportunity and they were really great.” Sarah Oliver who was also part of the organizing team said there were a lot of families who attended and enjoyed the atmosphere. “The family vibe was awesome. There were a lot of kids and parents said they felt comfortable with letting their kids feel free to roam around,” she stated. As for the music, Oliver said it was excellent. “Our talent was great. There were a lot of up and coming bands and people were blown away by them.” She said the fact that the rain held off was a bonus because the 2011 Kulth Festival was a rather wet affair. “The weather cooperated and I would say there was four times as many people compared to last year.” She said the festival definitely has room to grow and they look forward to tweaking it and making it even better for next year.

Just the ticket for Qualicum
W
e can all give a vote of thanks to the weatherman for holding the rain at bay over the weekend as Qualicum Beach held their inaugural Beach Day celebration. As with all weather-dependent events, this one desperately needed good weather and while it wasn’t by any means a scorcher, it certainly wasn’t bad. Of course, nobody can do anything about the weather, but as the small army of volunteers at the beach showed on Saturday — and the days leading up to it — there’s certainly a whole lot that can be done in just about all other areas. The event was a hit, with a big crowd of happy people enjoying that aspect of Qualicum Beach that is its trademark — the beach itself. So hats off to the volunteers who made it happen. Well done. Just as importantly perhaps, we owe a vote of thanks to the people who saw a problem in the town and decided to do something positive about it, instead of clucking around about the sky falling. Not enough going on in the summer months to draw visitors? Rather than cry doom and live in gloom, they opted instead to put their shoulders to the wheel and organize a festival. Anyone who has been involved in such an undertaking undoubtedly knows it’s no small feat to organize something like this but they were willing to have a crack at it — and they pulled it off. Will it solve the problems of Qualicum Beach? No. That’s asking a bit much. Will it draw more tourists? Maybe, if the idea that flowered on Saturday is nurtured with enough drive and creativity to grow into something bigger. Who knows? But it certainly smacks of the type of spirit that made Qualicum Beach what it is. Like the airport, the seawall and so much else in this town, it was community members rolling up their sleeves and doing things themselves that made it happen. — Editorial by Neil Horner

QUOTABLE:
Letters WILLIE HAS IT RIGHT Finally! We have councillors with vision in Qualicum Beach. Let’s talk about bringing back a balanced population with more people living and businesses thriving in the downtown core. Let’s build up, but with wise controls. Let’s utilize the infrastructure that is in place through increased taxable, affordable dwellings. Taxing the project developers enormous DCC’s before construction start up and before units are sold, is backwards. We need to attract the boomers’ children who are now starting their own families, and who have less money to buy in, but will spend more money in the downtown core than retirees. This is the new market we need to attract and cater to in order to balance the population. Ask this question: What if baby boomers do not come here in droves to retire like their parents did? The oldest boomers are 65 now and there is a lot of cheap real estate here that is not selling. Let’s talk about the regressive stagnant thinking that has demolished the Qualicum Beach tourism industry. Last week, a sunny, hot July day I drove the waterfront strip and to my dismay, not one No Vacancy sign. Their parking lots empty, and probably their bank accounts too! These properties were always full to capacity from May to Thanksgiving. You can see it in the unkept buildings
“They think the sand castles are spectacular and so do I.” KELLY INGRAM, see story page A23
ALMANAC Government Contacts PROVINCIAL:
that something has gone wrong here on this magnificent piece of waterfront real estate. Perhaps some of the old rules of rebuild on the waterfront need attention. The new condominiums on the corner of Garret remains unsold, as nice as they are. I have lived in Qualicum Beach for 52 years and my business has allowed me to travel throughout B.C. and Alberta extensively to resort and retirement communities for the last 30 years. Qualicum Beach is the most beautiful of all these communities, but economically and politically is at very low ebb in comparison. Dave Willie is right! We cannot afford to waste any more time with outdated planning. BRIAN JENKINS Qualicum Beach
WILLIE HAS IT WRONG The assertion of councillors Willie, Luchtmeijer and Brouilette that more development is needed along with lower DCC’s to bring in more families to downtown Qualicum Beach is facile, because as everyone knows, especially councillors promoting development, the bottom line is everything and the more construction that can be placed on a piece of land the more profit is made, irrespective of esthetics. Far from having more folks shopping in Qualicum Beach, younger families will almost certainly shop in Nanaimo. It is easy to drive to and fro when you are young, you can take advantage of more
competitive prices and bulk buying for a growing family just makes economic sense. The seniors in town cannot or will not drive all the way into Nanaimo and consequently shop for convenience in Qualicum Beach. Service is what brings folks into shops in smaller communities as well as the camaraderie of the experience. Leave developers uncontrolled you say — hmmm — do we want a Beach Club development on our waterfront where St. Andrews Lodge and Glen Cottages currently are? What about a national chain store or a four-storey plus condo development where the old Seabright Clinic on Harlech used to be — which would block countless uptown residents’ views of the water and mountains? In listening to the various councillors I am very much regretting that I am a “senior” as obviously we are a problem and although the downtown area bustles with activity, it seems that we, the citizens along with the Town of Qualicum Beach, like the dinosaurs are “doomed”, what a pity. Glass balls of mystery
LISSA ALEXANDER
reporter@pqbnews.com
When you take one of Kim Naylor’s genuine fishing float candle holders in your hand all the wonderful mystery and enchantment of the sea seems to wash over you. You wonder what parts of the world this glass float has seen, how long ago it was made and who used it. “I love the mystery behind them,” said Naylor, as she revealed some her fishing float products in her home studio in Errington. “Some of this glass could be over 100 years old.” Naylor comes from a family of fisherman and years ago her grandfather handed over his collection of glass floats to her. She became enamored with them and now the self-taught artist continues to search for more of the now rare objects. “They are very hard to find,” she said. “We went up to the [Queen] Charlottes last year deliberately trying to find them and we didn’t find any.”
Today she will get them from fishermen friends, she’ll track some down or people will give them to her. Naylor breaks the glass balls and uses stained glass techniques to put them back together. She adds solder sea stars, a bit of abalone and sometimes kelp, and the finished product is a stunning, rustic, decorative piece. Naylor’s company is called Keeping Afloat and besides the candle holders she also makes hanging floats and large decorative pieces. She incorporates the glass from the floats into her jewelry, as well as other materials like sterling silver, semi-precious stones and beach stones. Naylor also makes adorable little pea pod necklaces using vintage silver plated coffee spoons and fresh water pearls. Her products range in price from $13 to $150. Naylor said the best part of her job is scratching her creative itch. She also feels her
work keeps her connected to where she comes from, she said. “When I work with the fishing floats I think about my grandparents and my father and the fishing industry and how it was.” As for her creative ideas, her family may also have something to do with that. “I’m pretty sure my ancestors whisper in my ears sometimes,” she said. Find Naylor’s work as well as over 40 other vendors from around the Island at the Arbutus Open-Air Market this Saturday, July 28 at the Coombs Fairgrounds. Entrance is free and plenty of food vendors will be on-site. The event happens from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Locally Naylor’s work can also be found at Bowser’s Salish Sea Market, Old Ivy Gift Cottage in Coombs and Complements in Qualicum Beach. A new project by the Arrowsmith Agricultural Association (AAA) will have the community celebrating jugs, or at least jug band music. The Walk Right in Jug Band Project, funded by the Government of Canada’s New Horizon for Seniors Program, is a year-long program of music classes, rehearsals, performances and instrument-building for all ages and abilities. To date the program has had members of the Phil Harmonic Jug Band Orchestra (featuring seasoned musicians in the area) teaching classes in guitar, banjo, ukulele, harmonica and percussion along with jugs, washboards, spoons and kazoos. Local musician Gerry Barnum is the artistic director for the project and was also one of the instructors, along with John Hamel, Kerri Brown, Doug Maclean and Nick Hornbuckle. “We’ve been pushing for more fun than finesse this whole project,” said Barnum, saying the
music is easy to learn, hence the tongue-in-cheek name “Phil Harmonic Jug Band Orchestra.” “We’re definitely low brow,” he said. Barnum said the lessons have been a real confidence booster for people as they realize they can play this music. And the enthusiasm has been incredible, he said. “They want to get here early and stay late, that’s a good sign,” he said. The participants have now gone on to form their own groups: Popin Jay’s, Kast Aways and Jugger Notes and will be performing at community events like the Coombs Fair. Marilynn Sims was instrumental in bringing the project to life and said one of the mandate’s of the AAA is to foster community spirit and make sure old things are not lost. “It’s been fun, it has brought the community together and it actually has got tentacles going out with these jug bands into their various communities and bringing people together.”

Let’s go fly a kite Blustery winds were no problem for Parksville’s Kitefest LISSA ALEXANDER
reporter@pqbnews.com
There were some that surely enjoyed the winds blowing around Parksville on the weekend, including some kids attending the area’s annual Kitefest. The rain held off this year and a number of kids were dancing around the Parksville Community Park field with their newly constructed kites on Saturday. Others enjoyed the performances put on by
professionals like Island Quad Team from Victoria, who flew their spectacular kites in unison to music. The event was put on by the Parksville Lion Club and the British Columbia Kitefliers Association (BCKA). Kite fliers came from as far away as Washington State, Oregon, Alberta, the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island to fly on Parksville’s popular kite-flying field.

Summer magic at Milner LISSA ALEXANDER
reporter@pqbnews.com
There was plenty of interesting art work, captivating photos, music, food and sunshine at Milner Gardens on the weekend, as the annual Art and Photography in the Garden took place. The Mid Island Floral Art Club was back with a number of impressive displays, including A Mayan King by Finola Jones. Not only did she decorate a sculpture with ferns, branches, leaves and flowers but she
made a floral carpet out of colored sawdust as well. This year they also created a secret fairy garden with the help of some children. These miniature wonders could be found reading by the pond, sleeping on a spider web or walking through a mini kingdom. Other artists could be spotted in action around the gardens sketching, painting, making pottery and taking photographs.

Swedish folk music group Lyy entertained at a house concert in Qualicum Beach last week. The young group members were masterful on their instruments and some of their original pieces were very impressive.
As all the songs were sung in Swedish, the five-member group took turns explaining what the songs were about. On more than one occasion the group had the crowd of about 50 in stitches as they tried to make light of some of the rather sullen ballads. “But it sounds happy!” the drummer quipped.

Twenty years as part of the local community Thrifty Foods has a long history in Parksville, and they’re still going strong NEIL HORNER news@pqbnews.com
Sunday was a very special day at Thrifty Foods says store manager Doug Riederer. That’s because it was 20 years to the day that the Vancouver Island-based chain first opened its doors in Parksville. Originally opened as a franchise by Clayton Baker in 1992, the store was bought back by the corporation just prior to its sale to Sobey’s about five years ago. “This was our third or fourth franchise on the Island,” he said. “Alex Campbell bought back all the stores and then sold to Sobey’s. I came here about that time.” Over the course of those two decades, Thrifty’s has made a point to be more than
just a food outlet, but rather, an integral part of the community, eschewing many of the flashy, big name fundraisers for more local charitable efforts. “There isn’t a week that goes by when there isn’t some request for support,” he said. “Whether it be with food or sponsorship, we support a lot of organizations, from the Salvation Army to the various food banks to sports teams, you name it.” Riederer said he particularly likes to support sports teams in the schools, as he is aware of the ongoing funding issues in schools across the province. “We really like to support the schools, sports teams, things like that on a weekly basis,” he said. “I really like to
support the schools because there’s less and less funding every year. For instance, we give support to dry grad functions for both high schools.” As well, he said Thrifty’s is a big supporter of local families through their Food for Families program at Christmas, wherein shoppers can purchase a bag of food, which is then passed on to the food bank by the store. “It’s our customers that do it,” he said. “We just provide the vehicle.” The expansion of the store over the past year from 24,000 to 35,000 square feet has proven to be a big hit with customers, he noted, but that support — remarkable though it was — came as little surprise. “It was really well received by the community,” he said.

Self-employed? Consider disability insurance
L
ogic and statistics tells us that the chances of becoming disabled far out strip the chances of passing away. Disability insurance is too often overlooked by self employed individuals. There are many shapes and sizes of disability plans on the market today, your advisor will be able to assist you with selecting the right plan for your circumstances. I will give you a brief outline of what a typical plan looks like. Firstly let me point out that it is very important for you to personally pay the premiums on your disability plan, this will allow your disability payments to be tax free. If your business pays the premium without accounting this as a taxable benefit to you then the disability payments become taxable in your hands. The most
common plan is one that plan and visa versa. Most covers you for 66 per cent of plans are purchased to proyour gross income. DEATHS
In loving memory of Leo Alho, peacefully in his 96th year, Sunday July 15th, 2012 at the Nanaimo General Hospital, Vancouver Island. Beloved husband of Christine Anastasia (Siwicki). Loving father of Lynn (Don Shushkewich), Edward (Brenda Fleming), and Joann (Arthur Hawken). Cherished Poppa of Richard, Senja (husband Gard Garshol) and Seth. Dear son of Senja Oksa and Vaino Alho, predeceased. Dear brother of the late Aune (Alho) Maki. Sadly missed by cousin Nina Sirkka, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Born in Levack, Ontario, Leo was very proud of his Finnish heritage and spoke the language impeccably. Underground miner, electrician, business owner, ďŹ nancial advisor, Leo embraced life to the fullest, always intrigued by what was new and innovative. As a sales representative for Investors Syndicate, he probably clocked more miles in twenty-ďŹ ve years than two or three people would in a life-time. Whether in a boat ďŹ shing, on a golf course, repairing machinery, or designing shelves and knick-knacks, Leo was always interested in learning and understanding how things worked. In retirement, he developed an enthusiasm for cooking and the kitchen, making yoghurt, jams, pickles and grinding his own grain for our to make bread. Leo was the “poster boyâ€? for Malaspina University College’s Centre for Continuing Education as their oldest student in the professional baking program. His latest project was gardening and Leo was very proud of his blueberry and strawberry boxes. He loved music and dancing, a passion he shared with Christine. The love of his life, Christine encouraged and enabled Leo to pursue his many interests and activities. They would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary September 30th, 2012. At Leo’s request, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Private family memorials will take place in Parksville, British Columbia and Sudbury, Ontario. Donations to a musical organization or your local soup kitchen would be appreciated.

Mary passed away suddenly on route to Nanaimo Regional Hospital on Sunday July 15th. Mary leaves behind two children; son James David and daughter Sherry-Lynn, also two sisters; Georgina Garrow of Qualicum and sister Lorna (Barry) Lucas of Victoria and many nieces and nephews in B.C. Mary spent her last remaining years at Arrowsmith Lodge. Our sister was a very loving woman who would always have a smile for everyone who she passed by, taking her everyday walk; many friends who were happy to have known her. Forward House in Parksville was her sanctuary; she made many friends there. She will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. A little woman, with a big heart. Always and forever in our hearts, never forgotten. We love you Mary, Your Family. In lieu of owers please make a donation to Forward House, Box 752, Parksville, B.C., V9P 1T9 in Mary’s memory.
A family gathering will be held at a later date to remember our sister and mother.

Three wins not enough for playoffs BY JAMES CLARKE
Ohman was solid on the hill for the complete game win. “Our pitching was good all three games, it’s been our strength all year,” said Wallace, adding “our defense was very consistent, and our execution was excellent all three games. We got hits when we needed to drive in runs and defensively we got the key outs to prevent them from scoring. “Our guys played real good ball this weekend... it was definitely our most complete, consistent games of the year.”
sports@pqbnews.com
A post-season appearance wasn’t in the cards for this year’s young squad of Parksville’s Quality Foods Royals, but the local boys of the BCPBL strung together three straight wins and played spoilers on the weekend when they hosted the North Delta Blue Jays and the Vancouver Cannons for their final home stand of the season. “Both the teams we’re playing this weekend are battling for playoff spots, so why not try and play the role of spoiler,” Royals’ skipper Dave Wallace surmised easily from beside the dugout as the teams took to the infield for game one, adding “that’s what I told the guys, we may be out of the playoffs, but let’s go out there and try and win these games.” And that they did. On Saturday the pinstripes posted a pair of 3-2 wins to sweep the Blue Jays in their double-header, and on Sunday they carved out a solid 4-1 win over the Cannons in a rainy game one, but were denied the chance at another win when Game 2 was called because of the wet stuff. North Delta came to town clinging to that number eight spot for the final berth in the second season at 16-28 and were in tough at the outset as they faced Royals’ ace Clayton Isherwood who was on the hill for his final appearance for Parksville. The Royals spotted the Blue Jays a run in the first and second but regrouped and pulled out a big 3-2 win with runs of their own in the 4th, 6th and 7th. Isherwood, who was dealing with an inflamed elbow, left the game after five innings with the game tied 2-2 having given up two runs (one earned) off only four hits. Big Keller Anderson from Quadra Island came in in relief and kept the ‘Jays off the board to earn the win. Local catcher Mackenzie Parlow who has been an ironman behind the plate for Parksville this year, was one-for-two and walked twice. Parksville outhit their op-

ponents 9-6 in that one. Clarke Ohman had a strong game in left field in game one, making a number of running catches and gunning a runner down at home plate with a strong throw on the money. “That was a great throw,” Wallace confirmed, and made the point “all three of our fielders threw runners out at home this weekend... our outfield was excellent.”
GAME TWO was a scoreless tie through three innings and the Royals took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 4th. The ‘Jays tied it up in the top of the 6th, and Parlow drove in Rob Vlaj with a sac fly to deep center field for what would hold up to be the winning run in the bottom of the frame. The Blue Jays out-hit the Royals 8-6 in what was a well-played error-free game.
BACK AT IT Sunday against the 11th place (16-30) Vancouver Cannons, who swept Parksville in Vancouver last Wednesday, the Royals went up 2-0 in the bottom of the 2nd, the Cannons cut it to 2-1 in the top of the 4th, but Parksville closed out the win with two runs in the bottom of the 6th. It was another good day on the hill for Parksville’s Gr. 11 Nic Annau who worked all seven innings to earn his first BCPBL win. The Royals outhit the Cannons 8-3. “Nic’s pitched very well for us all year, especially in the last month, and he was real solid for us again today,” said Wallace, adding “he’s probably the hardest worker on the team, and it was nice to see him get rewarded.” “Our senior guys played very well, they showed the leadership you expect from the senior players,” he said. Wallace also had extra props for his catcher Parlow, another local product, who by this time next week will have set a club record for games caught in a regular season having been behind home plate every inning for the Royals this year except for his grad weekend (that’s 44 of their 48 games) “and whose receiving and blocking and throwing have really improved this year... he plays that position as good as any catcher in the league in my opinion. Boston marathon run helps local Haven House BY JAMES CLARKE sports@pqbnews.com
When it comes to fundraising through her running, it looks like local Realtor Natalie Nobert is money in the bank. Nobert, who successfully completed the Boston Marathon back on April 16 — made all the more challenging by a record heat wave — also raised $3,095 for a good cause along the way, and The News was there when she presented a cheque to Anne Spilker, executive director for Haven Society Nanaimo/Parksville. “Isn’t this fantastic, it’s really excellent,” Spilker said through a great big sincere smile.
It was Nobert’s debut in the storied marathon that numbered 22,500 strong this year. Asked where the money will go, Spilker, who made the trip to Parksville recently to accept Nobert’s cheque, said all of the donation “will go to services in Parksville. We have a victim services program here, a bit of an outreach program, and we’re beginning to actively work at possibly establishing a transition house in Parksville.” Formed in 1978, Haven Society has had an office here since 2007 — Nanaimo opened its first transition house for women, children, youth and families who have experienced violence, in 1980. More Whalers off to bigger leagues BY JAMES CLARKE sports@pqbnews.com
You can add the names of some more graduating Ballenas Whalers that have moved on to other teams. “It’s a pretty accomplished graduating class,” Whalers’ head coach Jeremy Conn said this week when The News caught up with him, pointing out, of the 13 players that graduated this year, four will be back out on the field next season. Justin Holland is headed for Nova Scotia where he’ll be attending St. Francis Xavier University (St. FX) and suiting up for the varsity X-Men football team as a defensive back. The X-Men compete in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport’s (CIU) four-team Atlantic division. Offensive lineman Terrek
Bryant was being wooed by SFU but has chosen to play for the Langley Rams who compete in the Canadian Junior Football League’s (CJFL) six-team BC Football Conference. Formerly the Surrey Rams, the team was founded in 1948. Standout receiver Dustin Rodriguez and linebacker Alex Adams have both committed to the CJFL powerhouse VI Raiders out of Nanaimo. The CJFL is a proving grounds for players aged 18-23. All four players, points out Conn, “are hard working guys with high football IQs, and they’ll definitely make any team they go to, a better team, that’s for sure.” The Raiders host the Rams Aug. 11 for their BCFC regular season home opener at Caledonia Park — kickoff is 5 p.m.

Race for Life brings 82 riders to Oceanside BMX track BY JAMES CLARKE sports@pqbnews.com
The Oceanside BMX Club held its Race For Life recently, and as usual, a big field of riders, of all ages, turned out for the annual fundraiser. Played out at Erik Goetzinger BMX Track in Qualicum Beach, the evening,
said Oceanside BMX’s Race for Life coordinator Leverne Spencer, “was fabulous. We had 82 riders out... it was a really good night and we raised a lot of money.” This year marked Canada BMX’s 20th annual Race for Life — B.C. tracks have raised over $329,000 to date. All mon-

Oceanside’s Mosquito AA Rep Reds baseball team wrapped up its exhibition season on the weekend with a sweep of the stubborn Mariners on Salt Spring Island. In what were two closely contested games and a good tune-up for this weekend’s Island Championships, the Reds had to be resilient to win game one 9-8 and game two 11-10. The locals went 10-3-1 in their brief but busy exhibition season, and now dig in to host the Island Championships this weekend at Springwood Old. The Island final comes down to three teams — Oceanside, Salt Spring and the Ladysmith Cannons. The top two teams advance to the BC’s slated for Surrey, Aug. 2-5. Both Ladysmith and Salt Spring, said Andy Macdonald, “have good teams, and we’ll have to play our best to have a chance to win our games... next weekend’s tournament will be a tough challenge for
our team.” Also helping coach the Reds are Barb Nicoll, Craig Snyder and Shane Ackerman. “We’ve had an intensive summer ball season, and these young players have demonstrated a commitment to our team philosophy of teamwork, sportsmanship, hustle and effort,” Macdonald said when asked for some insight into their season. He added the boys “continue to increase their knowledge of the game and improve their fielding, hitting, pitching and base running skills. Our primary goal has been to enhance their knowledge and enjoyment of baseball, and in that respect we’ve had a very successful season.” GAME ON The Reds open against the Cannons at 11 a.m. July 28 and return to the field at 5 p.m. to face the Mariners. On Sunday Oceanside plays Salt Spring at 1 p.m. and Ladysmith at 4 p.m.

THANK YOU
QUALICUM BEACH DAY SUPPORTERS!

A third of RCMP calls are for domestic violence CONTINUED FROM PAGE A31
“When I talk to the RCMP here one of the things they tell me is that their domestic violence calls are quite high — up to 35 per cent of the calls they receive,” said Spilker. The Parksville Haven Society office is located in back of the Family Resources Association at 198 Morrison Ave. “We rely heavily on fundraising,” she said, pointing out the Nanaimo branch raises around $235,000 annually, “and that’s a significant amount of our budget, and we also do gap donations for our services here in Parksville.” “It was great ...the amount of generous donations I got from people that I didn’t expect,” Nobert said when asked about her inaugu-
ral run at fundraising. “I didn’t know what to expect — it’s my first time ever doing this,” she said when asked if it was what she hoped for, adding, “my goal was to raise $5,000, but it was a last minute decision so I only had a short amount of time. It was only a matter of two months to fundraise and train... plus it’s new to me. “I’m thinking about going back next year — I want to run a better time and raise more money,” Nobert, 49 and a mother of twin daughters said matter of factly, her competitive nature shining through. 2012 COMMUNITY CELEBRATIONS
TOSH - 100 Years A quick history of TOSH site The Old School House Arts Centre building was the fourth school to be used in Qualicum Beach. It opened on August 24, 1912 with two classrooms, two teachers and 41 pupils, serving Grades 1 through 8. In 1976, when a new elementary school was built, the school board moved their ofďŹ ces to the Old School House. In 1985 the building was vacated and put up for sale. The Town of Qualicum Beach purchased the land and building for $50,000. Restoration then began on the building, and has had support from numerous businesses and volunteers over the years. It has been 25 years since the Arts Centre opened. — submitted by TOSH

TOSH executive director Corinne James is inviting residents from around the area to check out a piece of local history when The Old School House arts centre celebrates the 100th anniversary of providing service to the community, whether it be as an elementary school house or as its current incarnation, a vibrant arts centre that acts as the culture core of Qualicum Beach. It’s going to be a great party. Don’t miss it.

A special birthday bash is happening in Qualicum Beach this weekend to celebrate The Old School House Arts Centre (TOSH) building’s 100th year of active service, and the jam-packed schedule of events is sure to tickle anyone’s fancy. “I think it’ll be a record for the amount of art that will be taking place in one spot, said director of TOSH Corinne James. “I bet it’s a Guinness Book of Records, she joked. The fun kicks off at 11 a.m. with the ever popular Grand Prix d’Art, a painting race where artists pull a location out of a hat and then paint en plein air (in the open air), around Qualicum Beach in three hours. Also at 11 a.m. an art fair called Art in Action will take place in the parking lot next to TOSH with about 45 artists crafting and selling pieces. This includes painters, weavers, spinners, potters and even blacksmiths, she said.
A kid’s tent, sponsored by Opus Art Supplies will enable young ones to paint an acrylic piece on canvas and take it home. There will also be clay for kids to muck around with and faerie making. A wine and beer garden will be set up throughout the afternoon in the ďŹ eld behind TOSH and a lunch by the Old Dutch Inn will be available. At noon the Nanaimo Concert Band will perform on a stage in the parking lot next to the arts centre. A highly anticipated Japanese Taiko drum concert will take place at 2 p.m. During this time the Grand Prix paintings will arrive back and prizes will be awarded. The cake cutting will take place at 3:30 p.m., to commemorate the 100th birthday. The mayor and former students of the building will say a few words, and plaques will be given to the local rotary clubs for their contribution to the building’s renovations. A participatory concert will happen at 4 p.m. featuring a rare musical in-
struments, the theremin. This instrument is played without any physical contact and instead will have participants moving their hands in the proximity of the instrument’s two metal antennas. “That’s where kids can get involved,â€? said James, explaining that musicians on stage will invite people up to create music. Dinner Under the Stars will ďŹ nish off the night from 6 to 9:30 p.m. with dinner by The Old Dutch Inn, live music and dancing in the parking lot behind the Arts Centre. Although all 300 tickets to this event have been sold, James said tables will be put around the perimeter for people to come have a drink and listen to the seven-piece Jazz band. To top it all off a photography event will also take place throughout the day called A Day in the Life of Qualicum Beach: Qualicum at Play. Photographers will submit street shots of people and activities they see around town.
