Healthy eating healthy shopping E
ating healthy is a mantra for many people, and it’s a trend that is attracting more followers. However, shopping for healthy foods can be a challenge for some, both in terms of what to buy and what to pay. With a price range between health and affordability, the aisles can pose dilemmas between what’s good for the body, and good for the bank. We all know the basic tricks, such as avoiding impulse buying by making a list beforehand, and never shopping on an empty stomach. With some labels and marketing this can be confusing, so it’s time to write your list with a new set of rules. Simply knowing how to manoeuvre the grocery store from the entrance to the check-out will help ensure your fridge is full of healthy food. Save-On-Foods manager Mark Berry agrees that “times are changing,” and that it is important to provide customers with clear options when it comes to their shopping experience and the products they purchase.
The South Fraser Way PriceSmart and both Sumas Way and Whatcom Road Save-On locations offer nutrition tours for kids and adults. The tours are led by registered dietitians and provide the opportunity to learn about nutrition, healthy eating habits and how to load your cart with better food choices. “We wanted to find a way to support the changing needs of our customers,” explained Berry. “We have an aging population who want to lead a healthy lifestyle.” Thrifty Foods also helps educate shoppers about healthy eating. Customers can sign up at the website www.thriftyfoods.com for evening tours of the store with a dietician. She offers advice about how to read nutrition labels, healthy foods and smart shopping habits for people seeking better nutrition. Local dietitians also use the store for their own educational tours, and Thrifty supports them by offering gift cards to help support their healthy shopping. Registered dietitian, nutrition consultant and
nutrition tour leader, Kristin Brown, knows all about the struggles of leading a healthy lifestyle, and says it is “unfortunate that we live in a toxic food environment where we are surrounded by foods that are quick, easy, and tasty, but not always nutritious.” She advises consumers to be wary of the words “natural” and “organic,” as those can also be misleading, and instead look for the shortest list of ingredients on product labels. Brown also encourages “making things from scratch as often and possible,” and avoiding the candy aisle altogether. “Eating healthy takes some effort and planning,” says Brown. “You need to be aware of what you are eating, and try to look for whole, natural and least processed foods.” When Brown is leading a group on a nutrition tour, she stresses “sticking to the perimeter,” where the Continued on Page 27

She maintains that “whether or not they are organic, there are major benefits of increasing your intake.” Other healthy shopping tips include buying leaner cuts of meat or opting for “skin off ” chicken. Also, try fresh or frozen vegetables as canned veggies tend to be higher in salt, and try to incorporate products made with limited processing such as nuts, seeds, whole grains and beans. In order for our bodies to function optimally, it is important to be conscientious of the foods we eat, as they affect everything from energy levels, immune system, brain function, weight, metabolism and mood stability. Brown says eating well “can even help to prevent chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease and cancer.” A healthy lifestyle begins at the grocery store by being educated on where and what to avoid. Nutrition tours allow the shopping experience to be informative and fun. “You can feel good about feeding your body well,” says Brown, “starting right now and into your future.” Nicolle HODGES Contributer

Haywire Pinot Noir: Fresh, bright and lingering
O
n a recent trip up to Okanagan Crush Pad in Summerland, I bought several bottles of wine, including two 2010 Haywire Pinot Noir ($27/13% ABV) that I served at a recent Wednesday-night dinner party. While I am not accustomed to serving bottles of wine mid-week that ring in at nearly $30, this was a special occasion. On the nose, this wine was hinting at something floral and shared aromas of cherries, rhubarb, spice and the earth. The Haywire Pinot Noir was fresh, bright and lingering on the palate, with a soft mouthfeel and flavours of juicy ripe red cherries and strawberries dominating hints of tobacco, spice and herbs. Our main course was made up of half-asbad garlic-smashed potatoes (I’ll tell you about those later), asparagus and two racks of pork I had rubbed the night before with a paste of olive oil, garlic, freshly ground sea salt and black peppercorns, Dijon mustard, thyme, rosemary and horseradish. Perfectly paired! The wine was juicy enough to refresh the palate after each bite but was not so big that it overpowered the herbal goodness of the pork. Will I buy it again? Yes.

Empowered by horses a youth program that supports girls during their transition into womanhood. The program is based on Equine Guided Development, an approach that helps girls discover their true potential and experience personal growth through the guidance of horses.
W
hen humans and horses come together, something truly remarkable takes place. Horses sense people’s emotions and reciprocate an honest response. Through interaction with horses, we can gain a better understanding of ourselves and learn to approach issues from a new perspective. After experiencing the positive effects of this type of communication, Sharolyn Wandzura and Carla Webb created “Empowered by Horses,”
“We want to help girls realize their gifts and become confident, while working on communication and boundaries,” explained Wandzura. “A person is able to reflect on what is happening around them while in the presence of a horse because the power of the animal intensifies all senses. You need to be able to ask it with enough certainty and leadership to have it listen, and that becomes a great practice in embodying positivity and empowerment.” Sharolyn’s journey to become a life and wellness coach began at the age of four when she received her first pony – one of many her father would bring home. “I don’t ever remember being taught how to be around horses,” recalls Wandzura. “I just got to hang out with

13-year policing career to create the program herself.
Meanwhile, a very shy teenage Carla Webb was growing up feeling like she “didn’t fit in.” Her saving grace was being with her horse.
In 2007, Wandzura and Webb met at an equine development course in Maple Ridge, called “Chiron’s Way,” where they collaborated their ideas and created the first equine horse facility in the Lower Mainland.
“No matter how bad I felt, I knew in his presence I would not be judged.” Webb went on to work as a Vancouver Police officer, and has completed degrees in psychology and criminology. In 1999, she volunteered with the “Odd Squad,” a group of Vancouver Police officers who chronicled the lives of drug addicts in their documentary “Through a Blue Lens.” During Webb’s work with the “Odd Squad,” she encountered a group of troubled girls who were enrolled in a horse resource program. She began to volunteer with the group and accompanied them to farms where they would care for horses and take an occasional riding lesson. During this time, Webb became inspired to pursue her dream. “It sparked an idea that I had to create a program for girls that would not only prevent them from ever making a lifealtering decision that could lead down a path of drug addiction, but it would provide the skills, tools, resources and inspiration to flourish into amazing young women.” After numerous proposals to run a similar horse program through the Vancouver Police Department, all denied, Webb decided to leave her
“Empowered by Horses“ currently has four horses, also two miniatures for kids or adults who are fearful of the larger animals. Although only two years into development, the program is successful, and helps girls practice assertion and positive communication. The hope for the future is to become part of the Grade 5 school curriculum. Wandzura and Webb believe the program will help put an end to the cycle of bullying, by teaching proper communication and confidence, especially as kids enter the crucial middle school years. “Empowered by Horses” strives to apply the same principles that horses naturally posses, “They are unconditionally accepting of people, no matter what,” explained Webb. The women are dedicated to creating a world of opportunity for young women, a world where they can take on leadership roles and celebrate individuality. A world, they say that “resembles a herd of horses.” Nicolle HODGES Contributer

Sweet cherries linked to health benefits
C
herries are not only sweet, juicy and irresistible, they are also good for you. A low calorie, high fibre treat, the nutrient-dense sweet cherries are a powerful superfruit that research has linked to improving health and fending off a number of serious diseases. Here’s a snapshot:
Planning a quick and healthy breakfast can seem like an extreme sport that has you sweating to beat the clock. But don’t be intimidated. “A healthy breakfast can be just as quick and easy to prepare as a less nutritious one,” says Carol Dombrow, Heart and Stroke Foundation registered dietitian. “It’s all about getting creative.”
• HYPERTENSION AND STROKE: A serving of cherries has a whopping 270 mg of potassium. Evidence shows that a diet rich in potassium may help control blood pressure and reduce the risk for hypertension and stroke. • DIABETES: Researchers are interested in the role of anthocyanins in reducing insulin resistance and glucose intolerance. In addition, the role of glycemic index (G.I) in diabetes control has gained renewed interest. Sweet cherries, with a moderate G.I. of approximately 22, are thought to be an ideal fruit snack. Foods with a G.I. above 70 cause blood glucose to soar, and also then to quickly crash, causing hunger. On the other hand, foods with a low G.I. release glucose into the body slowly and evenly.
• ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE: Research shows that phenolic compounds found in sweet cherries can play a role in protecting neuronal cells, which are involved in brain function, reduce oxidant stress and can potentially reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s.
SEVEN TIPS FOR BREAKFAST IN SEVEN MINUTES OR LESS: • Leftovers can be a great option. Had whole-wheat pasta for dinner the night before? Warm it up for breakfast. The nutrition doesn’t change.
• CANCER-FIGHTING AGENTS: Fibre, vitamin C, carotenoids and anthocyanins are a quadruplet of cancer-preventative components found in sweet cherries. In addition, cyanidin, also found in cherries, significantly increases free radical scavenging in the body, which is known to help prevent and fight cancer. Cherries also contain ellagic acid, which appears to be a potent inhibitor to cancer cell growth.
• Have a batch of whole-grain, low-fat muffins or breads ready in the freezer. In the morning, pair one up with a banana and yogurt. • Do some prep. Cut up fruit the night before and keep in the fridge. It makes an easy and nutritious topping for yogurt or cereal. • Mix it up. Smoothies make a quick, tasty and nutritious breakfast. Make sure you use 100 per cent fruit juice, low-fat yogurt and plenty of fruit.
• CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE: The anthocyanins found in cherries can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease; they do this by protecting body’s lipids from a host of damaging possibilities, including inflammation, cardiovascular plaque and nitric oxide formation.
• Eat on the go. When you just have to get out the door, pack fruit, whole-grain crackers and a piece of cheese to get nutrition on the go. • Boil eggs the night before and pair up with apple slices and a piece of whole-grain toast.
• BENEFITS GOUT SUFFERERS: A study at the University of California showed reduced levels of uric acid after the consumption of sweet cherries. Gout, a painful disease of the joints, is associated with elevated levels of uric acid. • COMBAT INFLAMMATION: The anthocyanins found in cherries help with inflammation by shutting down the enzymes that cause tissue inflammation, similar to ibuprofen and naproxen.

t’s one thing to wear suits, ties and long-sleeved blouses to work in the winter, but when the temperature gauge hits 35 degrees, those polyester pants and tweed jackets can be a nightmare. Summer office attire is a tricky business, even if your office maintains a “business-casual” policy. You don’t want to be sweating buckets while you’re sitting at your desk or walking to a
Summer office attire
nearby restaurant for lunch. Most of the experts encourage employees to look to their managers when determining appropriate clothing. If your boss is wearing jeans and short-sleeved shirts to work, you could probably follow in his footsteps. It is also appropriate to ask your employer about summer office attire. That way you can’t go wrong.
You can get away with less formal summer office attire if you work “behind the scenes” away from the prying eyes of customers and associates. If most of your time is spent on the phone or at your computer, you can probably dress down and avoid a reprimand. However, if most of your work involves face-to-face meetings, you’re going to have to suffer a bit more.

FOR WOMEN: The experts suggest that women look to short-sleeved alternatives for summer office attire. A short-sleeved sweater with a long skirt or pants can be appropriate, as can short-sleeved blouses under light-weight jackets. When it’s hot, you might also look for linen or cotton clothing that breathes more efficiently than other fabric blends. WHAT TO AVOID: Summer office attire should not resemble what you’d wear to the zoo or a Saturday afternoon picnic. Shorts and capris, for example, should be avoided, and although open-toed shoes might be acceptable, flip-flops are not. Experts warn against wearing sleeveless shirts, unless worn under a jacket or over-shirt, and t-shirts are rarely considered acceptable. If you still aren’t sure what you can get away with concerning summer office attire, visit your HR department and simply ask. It’s better than showing up in something that makes your manager wince.

Sea inspired make-up I appreciate the inspiration that comes from the world under water. Between tropical fish, unique crustaceans and lush plant life, there’s a whole palette of vibrant colours to draw from. Lately, the trends that come from under the sea are everywhere – from nautical-themed attire in navy and white stripes to knotted jewelry and boat-themed hardware. It’s no wonder that colours like turquoise, vibrant coral and golden sand are also splashing their way into makeup collections this summer. Look for vibrant eyeliners to add a new pop of colour. Keep the rest of your eyelid neutral and pair the liner with several coats of mascara to make the colour stand out even more. If the bright waters of the sea don’t work for you, opt for one of the
summery pastel shades in lilac, mint green or peppermint pink instead. If you don’t feel brave enough to stray from your basics of brown, black, or grey, just switch them to a metallic, waterproof version of your favourite. Many of us have seen sand that seems to shimmer beneath the toes and it’s that kind of reflective colour that you should look for when shopping for a highlighting eyeshadow. From almost-white sand to pink beiges and golden hues, these colours are wonderful for making the eye area appear bright and open. Look for a shade that provides a soft reflection of the light rather than a glittery colour that might flake. Pair any powder eyeshadow with a cream eyeshadow to make it last even longer throughout the hot summer days.

Party planning like the pros T
here are so many different reasons to throw a party. Some people are seasoned experts at planning and executing the perfect party, while others are more apprehensive about hosting. With a little guidance, anyone can successfully host a memorable event.
STEP 1: CREATE A BUDGET Planning the perfect event starts with establishing a clear budget. Setting a firm budget will help set limits as to what and how much you can buy for the event. Be sure to list the main components of the party first: including food,
beverages and invitations. It’s important to allocate more of your budget to those items and use the remaining funds for decor and favours. STEP 2: DECIDE ON A LOCATION Knowing where you will host your party -- usually dictated by how much you can spend -- will help pave the way for other decisions. For example, if you are having a party at a restaurant, all you may need to plan for is providing favors and bringing a cake. If you are renting a room or having the Continued on Page 34

Continued from Page 33 party at home, your workload will increase. There are many different places you can have a party, even some unconventional locales. Therefore, if you are coming up with roadblocks based on the cost of venues, think outside the box. Look to churches, local parks or restaurant banquet rooms. STEP 3: MAKE YOUR SHOPPING LIST Once you’ve established your budget and location, it’s time to make your shopping list. List all of the foods you plan to make and then separately list the ingredients that need to go into each recipe. Purchase the necessary ingredients if you are having mixed drinks. An easier idea is to simply offer soft drinks, wine and beer because guests can serve themselves. budget allows, some people like to hire caterers to wait on guests and clean up during and after the party. This is beneficial to hosts who want to mingle with guests and not worry about collecting soiled dishes and glasses.

STEP 5: DECIDE ON PERSONALIZATION Although there may be the temptation to have a theme party, sometimes these are viewed as immature. Instead, think about putting your own personal touch on the party planning. For example, if you’re a budding artist, decorate with pieces you have made and other inexpensive works of art. Think about having a decorative item as a centralized theme, such as crystal vases or birdhouses. Perhaps the party could be dazzling because of a particular colour scheme. Professional party planners make their money by creating one-of-a-kind events for their clients. You too, can host a party that will be magical with just a little organization.
