The Drifter’s Mini Dude Farm open for business Christina Millington Omineca Express Blanch Lawrence and Judy Dame welcomed their first guests to The Drifter’s Mini Dude farm on July 15. A project that has occupied over a year of Lawrence and Dame’s schedules has finally come to fruition as guests wander the grounds on Meadowdale Road on a Sunday afternoon. “We aren’t as far along as we had hoped,” said Dame. “However, we didn’t want to cancel today’s events. It has been a lot of work.” It has been Lawrence’s passion to convert her acreage to accommodate her love of animals with the ability to draw local residents out for the same reason, as “animals should be enjoyed.” Lawrence, Dame, family and friends helped with the construction of the farm. Lawrence’s nieces and nephew’s contributed their colourful sides to the main farm and bunny habitats with colourful paint and personalized handprints. The farmhouses peacocks, potbelly pigs, geese, goats, lama, sheep, ducks, horses and the list goes on. “Having the farm and loving animals I thought to give this opportunity a go,” said Lawrence. A lot of the animals on the farm are on the endangered list. Lawrence hopes her farm can keep the animals protected and for visitors to enjoy them. Photos on page 3

Minerals North bridging community gaps Christina Millington Omineca Express It all began back in 1989, the first northern BC minerals conference was held in Terrace that had communities bridging communication gaps. Minerals North has been a strong advocate for smaller communities with its ability to engage people on a greater scale by bringing them together to discuss ways to draw “outsiders” into a community. Minerals North typically travels from town-to-town and Vanderhoof applied to host the mobile conference two years previous, which has been approved for 2014. ako Stuart-Nech Bo ok 2011 Fun Activity

community with locals having the ability to work closer to home. “It will encourage young adults to work locally and become more involved in the mining industry,” said Thiessen. Minerals North has been instrumental with networking communities to become more aware of mining and exploration projects that benefit communities substantially. “It allows a town to take ownership,” Thiessen said. “The area is showing a lot of mineral deposits. This will lead to future development in the area and showcase our town to the mining sector as exploration evolves.”

Mayor Gerry Thiessen couldn’t be more thrilled to have the chance to host the conference, as it will be an opportunity to bring people into the community in hopes to benefit from the developments that have been growing over the years – such as New Gold. “This will be an invaluable option for the community,” said Thiessen. “It will allow ourselves as a community to stretch. Minerals North not only provides a gateway to communicate with other communities, but also offers communities the ability to recognize what they can do to attract people that wouldn’t otherwise find the need to visit. Thiessen feels that initiatives that Minerals North provides for the younger generations will help the growth within a

Booming real estate sales for Northern BC Submitted Rebecca Billard The BC Northern Real Estate Board (BCNREB) reports that real estate sales are up in most areas of B.C. this quarter. BCNREB president Joni Brown said, “Sales are up pretty much across the board and listing inventory is down slightly. Prices have increased some, but not drastically and show the steady and healthy trend of a stable market.” She added, “All indicators from the economists are that Northern B.C. will maintain a healthy level of growth. Interest rates are still on the historical low end while prices remain reasonable, making it a great time for investors to build their portfolios in the real estate sector, and for homeowners to upgrade, or enter the market.” In the Bulkley Nechako region, the BCNREB report that sales have remained consistent. During the first six months of 2012, 32 properties worth $4.2 million were sold in the Burns Lake area, compared to 33 properties worth $3.5 million in the same time period last year. At the end of June there was 137 properties of all types available for purchase in the local area. Doug Phair from Remax Wrightway in Burns Lake said that listings in the local area are definitely on the

increase. “It’s a good time to sell because there is a lot of people from out of the area looking to buy,” he said. “Spring and fall is the peak time for real estate sales as people are away on summer holidays enjoying the weather, but it is quite busy at the moment, so we are expecting a great fall this year,” he said. According to Phair there is interest from out of town buyers because local property prices are more favourable. “People are impressed when they come here ... they are coming from urban areas like the Lower Mainland and Vancouver. Some of them without employment, just looking for a lifestyle change ... this great weather we are having also helps with sales,” he added. In Houston, 25 properties worth $4.1 million have changed hands so far this year, compared to 20 properties worth $3.3 million in 2011. As of June 30, there was 60 properties of all types listed for sale in the Houston area. The Smithers area reported 142 sales with a value of $35.2 million in the first six months of 2012, compared to 125 sales worth $26.2 million at this time last year. Half of the 74 single family homes sold so far this year, sold for less than $250,000 and took, on average, 75 days to sell. As of June 30 there was 193 properties for sale in the Smithers area. Sales have increased in the Vanderhoof area with 54

sales worth $10.7 million occurring in the first six months of the year, compared to 36 sales worth $6.8 million to June 30, 2011. As of June 30, 2012, there was 173 properties of all types for sale in the Vanderhoof area. Fort St. James has seen a slight decrease in property sales, with 17 properties worth $3.6 million selling in the area so far this year, compared with 22 properties worth $3.2 million in the first six months of 2011. At the end of June there were 65 properties for sale in the Fort St. James area. Property sales in Prince George have dramatically increased this year with 659 properties worth $154.7 million changing hands so far, compared with 592 properties worth $136.3 million in the first six months of last year. At the end of June there was 793 properties of all types available for purchase in Prince George.

Request for Proposals from Non-Profit Societies for Homeless Outreach Services BC Housing is seeking experienced non-profit partners to submit proposals to manage and deliver the Homeless Outreach Program in Vanderhoof, British Columbia starting September 1, 2012.

New buses a canvas for local artists July 2012 -- Mount Milligan employees living in Fort St. James and Mackenzie will soon be travelling to work in style. Newly purchased mine shuttle buses are on order and will delivered to the communities sometime in September. A top North American manufacturer designed the custom-built vehicles. Each bus has a high output engine, 4x4 drivetrain, and an air filtration system able to cope with dusty conditions. For a more enjoyable ride, the buses feature an on-board washroom, additional heating and air conditioning units, and specialty seating, with additional legroom. To celebrate the arrival of these buses, and the spirit and artistic talent in the local communities, Thompson Creek Metals is hosting a contest to find a custom design for bus exterior. Once the buses are

built, the manufacturer will cover the sides and back of the bus with an overlay featuring the winning designs. Residents of all ages and ability are invited to submit their ideas by drawing a design on the bus outline provided on the entry form. (Please remember to leave the windows and doors blank). Entry forms and the contest rules are available at www.mtmilligan. com/sustainability/ community, or from the Fort St. James or Mackenzie offices. For more information, or to submit an entry, please email busdesign@ tcrk.com, or visit the Fort St. James or Mackenzie community offices. Submit your entry before 4:00 pm on August 24th. A judging panel will choose the winning designs, and the artists will be notified in early September. Winners will be featured in this column,

in the Mount Milligan internal and external newsletters, as well as on the company website. The decorated buses will be unveiled at community events in Mackenzie and Fort St. James taking place towards the end of September. Anyone wishing to see their artwork showcased in the community is encouraged to submit an entry. There are no maximum entries per person, though designs must be original work of the artist. Mount Milligan will be the first major copper gold mine to open in BC in more than a decade. The project is currently employing a construction workforce of approximately 850 and once in operations, at the end of 2013, the mine will create more than 350 permanent jobs. A province wide journey for Slater On July 8, Kim Slater began her journey across the province to engage Northern communities in dialogue on renewable energy and alternatives to expanding the tar sands. She has begun to share these informal conversations on the campaign website and blog, Facebook and Twitter accounts. One of the people she has spoken with along the way is Seth McDonald of Dunster. “An energy strategy should fit local and regional realities;” he says. In addition to working in the silviculture industry, Seth started his own biodiesel company called Robson Valley Biodiesel. He is committed to reducing his dependency on fossil fuel at work and at home, and helping others in the area to do the same. He runs his vehicles on waste veggie oil and biodiesel and grows much of his own food. He donated a large quantity of waste veggie oil to the Band Together Support vehicle. So far Kim has traveled 170 km west along Highway 16, with stops in Mt. Robson and McBride, heading towards Prince George. The Sea to Sands

Conservation Alliance will be hosting a gathering at Artspace at 7 pm on the 24th of July. Anyone with an interest in tar sands alternatives and renewable energy is welcome to attend. Another dialogue-oriented gathering is planned for the day before (July 23) in Williams Lake. It will be hosted by Transition Town and will feature a movie screening. While Kim intends to primarily ask clean-energy related questions at the gatherings, many of which were shaped and tweaked at an interactive dinner event in Whistler, she will also be inviting community leaders to endorse the Statement of Support for a National Energy Strategy prepared by Tides Canada. The aims of a national energy strategy should be to deliver energy security, create jobs and prosperity and to fight climate change while protecting the environment. The BC Games making an environmental footprint

Organized sport events, no matter how big or small, have an environmental impact. With the help of its motivated volunteers, the BC Games Society is striving to reduce its environmental impact and raise awareness. Community-driven programs initiated by the BC Winter and BC Summer Games volunteers are contributing to reducing the environmental im-

pact of the Games and are developing leaders by increasing environmental awareness among Games participants, volunteers, and community members. For example, the 2008 BC Winter Games in Kimberley and Cranbrook established best practices to reduce environmental impact. A volunteer team of “Go Green” Ambassadors were active and visible

during the Games implementing the plan and raising awareness. This communityled initiative developed youth leaders and established important benchmarks that future hosts could refer to in order to reduce their environmental impact. The 2010 Summer Games in the Township of Langley took the lead to ensure all food waste was composted and recycling

bins were available at all sport venues. “The challenge for BC Games host communities is the great variety of available resources to implement changes in areas such as transportation, food services, and venue operations,” said Kelly Mann, President and CEO of the BC Games Society. “But, given that there is a clear desire by participants and host communities to reduce environmental impact, the BC Games Society took the lead to develop information and resources for community volunteers to adapt to guide policy and implement action plans.” Before the 2010 BC Summer Games, Metro Vancouver, the regional government responsible for waste management in the Greater Vancouver area, provided policy and planning support. What resulted is a set of resources and samples that reflect the unique structure of the BC Games and consider the many different communities involved. The BC Games resource materials complement other established “green” Games standards such as a no-idling policy for all Games transportation vehicles. No bottled water is supplied to venues at the BC Games and athletes are required to bring a reusable water bottle to fill with tap water throughout their competitions. Greening the Games also comes in places

you don’t expect. Until 2009, the BC Games torch was lit 100 days prior to the Opening Ceremony. This torch burned 900,000 cubic feet of natural gas and contributed 12 tonnes of

green house gases to the atmosphere. The gas torch is now retired and replaced with an energy-efficient LED torch that draws 850 watts of energy - comparable to a household

toaster. This torch symbolizes the innovation and initiative that the BC Games will strive to adopt with other environmentally responsible initiatives moving forward.

COMMUNITY

Fort St. James local goes to Paralympic Games Black Press Joan Reid grew up in Fort St. James — a girl who liked bike riding in a hockey town. She wasn’t interested in sports and after a car accident in 1985 left her in a wheelchair, there were other things to think about.“I never really considered myself an athlete but when I got back from Serbia, I felt like an athlete,” said Reid, 51, who qualified for the London 2012 Paralympic Games in the ASWx class in rowing. She won her final single-scull rowing race by 22 seconds at a qualifying event in Belgrade in May. Rowing was originally a cross-training sport for Reid when she started cross-country skiing with the goal of competing in the 2010 Paralympic Games. She won a number of races, including two World Cup silvers.“I tried downhill skiing with Silver Star Adaptive Snow Sports with Randy Schellenberg. He’s great. He started a lot of adaptive sports in the area. Then I got into para-nordic skiing,” she

said. “I think I would have made it for 2010 if I hadn’t broken my rib rowing but I just couldn’t get back to where I was.” Then Bill Maloney, a cross-country ski coach, encouraged her with a training program and fitness trainer Cindy Garvin started to help her with exercises and she was inspired to try rowing again. The next step was to train with Rowing BC provincial coach Martin George at the Vernon Rowing and Paddling Centre on Swan Lake starting about a year ago. She now rows with a unique prosthetic chest piece designed by Alan Blyt of Hagar Orthotics in Kelowna. “This is the only one of its type in the world and it not only gives me support, but assists me to train long hours injury free,” said Reid, who qualified to continue on the road to London last summer in an Ontario time trial. She felt she wasn’t ready for the World Cup last year but trained all winter, including at a camp in Florida, and submitted her ergometer scores to Rowing Canada. She is taking leave from her job as a

church administrator in Enderby, where she lives, and her business, Cat-tale Cottages, rental cabins on Gardom Lake, to concentrate on training. Her day starts at 6 a.m. when she gets up, has breakfast, does a few things around the house and is on Swan Lake by 8:30 a.m. six days a week. After that it’s a rest, something to eat and off to work in the gym with Gavin or on her bike on alternate days, followed by a nap. After supper, she tries to relax or do some office work. “This stage of her training is intense. Joan’s got some really good technique. Her strength is going to take her a long way. She’s a joy to work with. I love working with adaptive athletes. It’s a challenging and rewarding thing for me to do,” said Gavin. Reid will be competing Aug. 31, Sept. 1 and 2 at Dorney Course at Eton in one-kilometre races where her best time is five minutes and 58 seconds. She will be rowing in a 21-foot-log scull, just wide enough to sit in, loaned to her by Ireland. She brings her own seat, straps and

oars. Coach Martin George thinks Reid is well prepared. “It’s an amazing result from someone who has come a long way in just a year. Joan has worked very hard to get to where she is and she showed with her performance at Belgrade that she wanted a sport at the Paralympic Games,” he said. Reid took part in a regatta in Italy before competing in Belgrade, so she knows seven of the rowers she will be up against in London. She’s set to go to a training camp in Portugal in August. There’s no turning back now. “It’s not just me. I can’t just take it easy. A lot of people are putting a lot of time and energy into me — my coaches and trainers and Go Row and Paddling, and Vernon Rowing and Paddling Centre for sponsoring me and the Enderby Lions Club for getting new rowing clothes for me. My friends at my Bible study group help with meals because I don’t like to cook and they give me a lot of emotional and spiritual support. So many people have helped along the way and I’m really grateful

Who isn’t familiar with lavender for it’s de-stressing, calming and peaceful effects? Ancient Egyptians used it during mummifications, essential oils were prized as well as pricey. Guest Editorial:

It’s so often taken for granted Ruth Lloyd Caledonia Courier As the Rolling Stones so aptly said, “Time is on my side.” While Mick and the boys weren’t exactly talking about it in the existential sense, the chorus still rings through my head as I contemplate life in June of 2012. I recently read a blog by a young woman I once knew about her recent battle with Lyme disease. A spider bite in Europe left her struggling with long-term health issues which, for obvious reasons, she at first found more than a little difficult to adjust to. Swollen joints, extreme fatigue, neurological impacts and other truly difficult symptoms changed her life after infection to a degree, few would find easy to swallow. But interestingly, she was on a path at the time she was bitten to work towards yogic enlightenment, or something like that, and instead came away with a life-altering infection. Strangely enough, the infection seemed to achieve what a trip to France for meditation and yoga did not. A young woman who had been, in her own words, impatient with a “profound, egotistical assuming nature” now found a painful disease to be a teacher of patience and acceptance. “Life with Lyme disease became a process of patience and compassion.” This week, as I was running out of time, as I always do, and becoming unsatisfied and impatient with the amount/quality/ substance of what I was creating, I found her words strangely calming. So many of us in North America do not seem to be able to slow down enough to really keep things in perspective at times. I for one would like to be able to take a page out of her book in the future, and think of running out of time as a chance to focus down and prioritize - without the Lyme disease.

The memoirs of a golf cart adventure and a bruised.. cranium Christina Millington Omineca Express The toys of summer are always exciting to dust off and reacquaint yourself with. Especially when under all that dust is the opportunity to head out of town, and fast. I’ve always had this fascination with street bikes. I’m not sure if it stemmed from countless adventures to the racetrack back home, or that I had friends that were racing competitively for BMW Motorrad. We’ll decide that another day. Nonetheless, I love to go fast. I know saying that may very well get the local RCMP detachment looking for a white Honda racing about town, however, I’ve let off the gas pedal over the years – speeding tickets got far too expensive. I have fond memories going out riding on the back of a GSX R 1000 through the mountains, laying rubber down on the open roads that were shaded by a beautiful array of trees and shrubbery. It’s always nice to find that one activity that you can look forward to when days seem long or uneventful. Having friends that are committed to the sport, or for leisurely purposes, made adapting to the hobby an easy one – and trust me, no one is twisting my arm to hop onto a bike that reach an unrealistic speed. Seeing as I’m on the subject, there was this one summer back in 2010 at Mosport Racetrack just outside of Peterborough, Ontario where I was living at the time. My friend and I decided to take a little adventure on a golf cart, which were to be used to tour around the track; however, we saw them as an off-roading ad-

venture. Her nephew decided to tag along. Not thinking anything of his age and his childish ways we obliged to his request. He grabbed the “reigns” and off we went around the paddock. It was smooth riding up until my friends nephew thought to take a sharp right hand turn that had me barrel rolling out of the side. I couldn’t gain ground and I fell backwards driving my head full force into the pavement. It took a second to catch my breath and understand what exactly just happened. I’ll never forget that moment, as an older lady came running frantically down the hill yelling “I heard your head hit, are you ok?” I thought I must have split my head open – there was no way I could bounce my head off pavement that hard and walk away without blood drawn and/or concussed. I survived, arrived home a little groggy so I went straight to bed, and under supervision of course for friends were concerned that I could be concussed with no evident signs. Well, it would appear I got slightly off track with the “toys of summer.” As I was saying, having that one summer activity to look forward to after a long day at the office or during your down time makes up for the long winters its tucked away collecting dust. If you find yourself out off-roading on a golf cart this summer, be sure to wear a helmet or a trusty harness.

BC Summer Games showcases finest athletes In London, there are a number of Canadian athletes who will remember their first multi-sport experience at a BC Games. Twenty-four athletes on the Canadian Olympic team started their journey to London with a trip to the BC Games including 2008 Olympic gold medallist Carol Huynh (Wrestling), and recent Giro d’Italia winner Ryder Hesjedal (Cycling). As part of the athlete development pathway, the BC Games are a first multi-sport experience for young athletes that lead towards provincial and national teams and ultimately the Olympic or Paralympic Games. The BC Games are part of a strong provincial sport system that provides an outstanding training environment and support services for high-performance athletes. Forty per cent of the Canadian Olympic team live or train in B.C. Shot-putter Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops is one of Canada’s great medal hopes at the 2012 Olympic Games. He is a shining example of a B.C. athlete who has developed to international success with support through all the stages of the athlete pathway. Involved at a young age with the Kamloops Track and Field Club, he represented the Thompson-Okanagan Zone at the 1995 and 1996 BC Summer Games. Success as part of Team BC at the 2001 Canada Games was next before winning gold for Canada at the 2007 and 2010 Pan American Games. All eyes are on this BC Games alumnus to better his fourth place finish from the 2008 Olympic Games. Swimmer Brent Hayden of Mission is another medal contender in London. Brent competed at the 1998 BC Summer Games and reflected, “The BC Summer Games was the point in my career when I realized that I had the potential to go further. It was soon after that that I decided to switch from being a summer swimmer to training all year round. It is clear that I wouldn’t have noticed my own potential without the BC Summer Games.” The full Paralympic team will be named later this summer but former BC Games athletes Bo Hedges of Fort St. John (Wheelchair Basketball) and Adam Rahier of Powell River (Swimming) will be part of the team. Over 2,300 athletes between the ages of 10 and

18 will be at the 2012 BC Summer Games, which kick off just one week prior to the start of the Olympics. It is an inspiring experience that will ignite the dreams of many young athletes to pursue their sport to the highest level. A veteran of the Canadian Women’s Soccer team, Karina LeBlanc from Maple Ridge remembered, “It was an amazing experience because I did dream of one day being at the Olympic Games and it was the closest thing for me to it, so it made me want to be there that much more!” Watch for the next generation of Olympians and Paralympians at the 2012 BC Summer Games, July 19-22. Cleaning up one drop at a time Christina Millington Omineca Express Reduce, reuse and recycle. The BC Used Oil Management Association (BCUOMA), non-profit, has put British Columbia on the map for its recovery initiatives regarding the reuse of oil and antifreeze containers. BCUOMA is responsible for recovering 87 percent of used oil and antifreeze containers according to their website. Summer Ambassadors from BCUOMA made their way through town on July 10 bringing awareness to Vanderhoof residents of the importance of the proper disposal of oil filters and antifreeze containers. Emily Lovie, an ambassador from Vancouver and Ali Omelaniec from Langley, both studying at Simon Fraser University has made her environmental footprint with her voice in hopes to stand firmly behind this initiative. “We have had a lot of positive community feedback during our travels across British Columbia,” she said. “Its our way to get

The power of a

the word out and educate the public.” BCUOMA has been undertaking this project since 2003 province wide being responsible for the highest recovery rate in the country. According the Lovie, one litre contaminates one million litres of water. “One drop makes a difference.” With the collection and reuse of oil filters, they are being used to reinforce steel once they are re-refined. Online reports indicate that since the program launched in 2003, recovery rates for used oil and oil-related products have seen promising improvements. However, there is still just over a million litres of oil that is improperly disposed of each year in used oil filters and oil containers that are tossed in landfills instead of being brought to a return collection facility. With headquarters in Chilliwack, BC and 520 return collection facilities across the province, BCUOMA is making a difference one drop at a time. Program funded by Environmental Handling Charges (EHC).

Alcohol has been determined a factor and an investigation is on going as the Vanderhoof RCMP is seeking the assistance of police agencies outside the jurisdiction of the Vanderhoof RCMP. According to Vanderhoof RCMP reports, The suspect, a 41 year old Vanderhoof resident has been remanded into custody and is expected to have a bail hearing scheduled in the up coming days. In all, the Vanderhoof RCMP have recommended five charges in relation to this investigation, which is still ongoing at this time. There were several animals on the property, which were taken by the Vanderhoof RCMP and now have been turned over to an appropriate care provider while the courts deal with this matter. The file has been forwarded to the local Crown Counsel Office who will review the charge recommendations.

Vanderhoof male charged for the misuse of firearm The morning of July 8 had the Vanderhoof RCMP investigating a disturbance out on Blackwater Road. A 41-year-old Vanderhoof man faces possible charges after firing his gun at his local residence during an evening barbeque with friends. According to RCMP reports, it was reported that the male had allegedly shot his firearm into the air in what police believe was an effort to intimidate others attending the party. Vanderhood RCMP arrived at the male’s residence to then arrest and detain the suspect for the use of a firearm. A search warrant was warranted for RCMP to search the house and collect all firearms and seize them from the property. The suspect has a history of firearms related offences as well as other criminal charges.

Rediscover Vanderhoof BarterNow.ca BarterNow is a local, Vanderhoof based, online barter network. The idea for BarterNow came when Vanderhoof resident Jutta Schoenhardt needed help with the accounting software she was using for her business. She came across a wonderful woman who taught her how to use the accounting software, and Jutta was thinking of a way to pay her back. That’s when the idea came to her; why couldn’t there be a network where people could trade products and services for other products and services, without the exchange of money. Jutta did some research, and discovered that there are incredibly successful barter networks like this all over North America, including a number of networks in Canada. Seeing how well these communities work, and how much the users beneďŹ t from the service, Jutta decided that Vanderhoof could beneďŹ t from a barter network. BarterNow was started by bartering! Jutta enlisted the help of her talented sons, Pascal and Marcel, to help build the website and do the design work! BarterNow was ofďŹ cially launched in the summer of 2011, and the network is slowly growing, as word spreads about the beneďŹ ts of being part of this community. BarterNow membership is currently available to residents in Vanderhoof, Fort St. James, and Fraser Lake. Members list their goods or services on BartnerNow.ca at market value. Other members within the network can purchase these goods or services with barter dollars, which are transferred to the sellers account for his/her to spend on another good/service. For example, Jutta often sells her “Saddle Bar Lodgeâ€? bread at 7 loaves for 12 barter dollars. Another barter member then buys the bread from Jutta. 12 barter dollars are then transferred from

the user’s account to Jutta’s, which Jutta can then spend on more accounting software lessons! Barter Now is a way for local residents to support their local community. The artisan community, and we are all artists in one way or another, can sell their products without hav-

ing to have a store and large overhead. A business can ďŹ ll slow times with barter, move inventory that is about to expire, or sell off out of season products. Jutta’s vision for this network is a community of like minded people that know and support each other and the local businesses.

Human beings are community people, and we thrive in a community. Plus a great barter transaction is a very satisfying experience. Jutta would love to see every artist in the community, whether they bake, pickle, quilt, or paint, to take advantage of this platform to sell their pieces, or to try new things. Think outside the box, list something you absolutely love to do and see how other people like it. You may just discover your new career this way! There is an annual membership fee of $99+tax per account, which gives the user 100 barter dollars immediately. If you are one of the ďŹ rst 100 members, you can take advantage of the Double Dollar Deal, and receive an extra 100 barter dollars! Now all you need to think about is what you have to offer on the network, because when you barter, you buy smarter! For more information, please contact Jutta at 250-567-3993.

Featuring the spirit of the local people Bright future ahead for Vanderhoof teen Christina Millington Omineca Express

All it took was a bit of dedication and a goal. Connor Nielson has had his disadvantages like any other teenager growing up experiencing the rigors of high school and coming into one’s own. Nielson developed the name “Mr. Football” around Vanderhoof, a nickname that surely denotes Nielson’s passion for the game. Football became an outlet for Nielson during his high school career at NVSS. An activity which allowed him to interact with other players, define his leadership skills and hone in on his talents that were evident from age 12 when he got his start in sports. Claire Nielson, as any mother would, speaks highly of her son as she encourages him to be all that he can be. “It has always been more about the team than him,” she said. “He has faith in his team.” Nielson got his start in sports participating in the Steve Nash Basketball camp. Football didn’t come to fruition until the Nielson family moved to Vanderhoof from the Cayman Islands. According to Claire,

her son has always been “extremely accurate” in all that he does. “Connor came into his own while at the Steve Nash camp,” said Claire. “He was a shy boy.” Connor was the top basketball athlete during his camp days. However, after he had experienced being on a team with the opportunity to build upon camaraderie with the other players, football was in Nielson’s sights. Nielson has spent his high school career pushing himself, as a quarterback, and his Vikings teammates on the football field toward victory. The NVSS Vikings won provincials, which led to defeat in semi finals in overtime in 2011. Nonetheless, Nielson and the team are more excited than ever for the years ahead of them where they can prove they are the team to beat. Nielson has had the opportunity, amongst his teammates, to benefit from the Daved Benefield Camp which has them interacting with a professional CFL athlete on their on turf. “It was really great to work with Benefield,” said Nielson. “He’s my favourite coach.” The camp has put the team into overdrive as

each individual player has benefited from working one-on-one with Benefield, Nielson couldn’t be happier about the whole experience. “I like how we can have fun and joke around and still be competitive,” said Nielson. Nielson’s bags are packed as he has made way to Top Gear, a 4-day camp (July 16-19) that reached out to Nielson and nine other quarterbacks from British Columbia. “I feel good going into this camp,” said Nielson. “This is a confidence booster and I’ll have the opportunity to work with really good athletes.” When the camp is done, only 1 quarterback will be chosen to continue forth with benefiting from the camp. If there is anything Nielson can take away from his football career it would be that it encouraged him to excel in school. Nielson aspires to continue on with post-secondary at either the Florida State University (FSU) or the University of British Columbia (UBC) on the coat tails of a scholarship that requires him to keep his grade point average (GPA) above 80 per cent. “My goal is to finish high school with a schol-

arship,” he said. “I would like to pursue a career in business with the opportunity to coach football.” According to Nielson’s family and friends,

football has completely changed his life. “I’ve told his story a lot,” said Claire. “I’m so proud of Conner.” Nielson is at the fore-
