Proposed bylaw to single out pit bulls Would charge owners four times more for licensing fee by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter District of Maple Ridge staff are recommending a new dog bylaw that singles out pit bulls as “aggressive” and would charge their owners a licensing fee four times that of other breeds. The fee would apply to pit bull terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers, American Staffordshire terriers, American pit bull terriers, or a cross of any of the breeds. Pit bull owners would be required to pay a $200 “aggressive dog” licensing fee annually, and require their dog to be muzzled when off the owner’s property. Pit bulls would also be subject to higher impound fees. See Pit bulls, p12

Rain doesn’t dampen Caribbean fest Between 10,000 and 15,000 attend weekend event by Colleen Flanagan staff reporter Thousands of people ﬂocked to the Caribbean festival over the weekend, despite rain Sunday. Between 10,000-15,000 people enjoyed the sights and sounds of the 12th annual event in downtown Maple Ridge. Deddy Geese, co-founder and member of the Caribbean Festival Society, was pleased with Saturday’s turnout. “It was absolutely astounding how many people we had so early in the day,” he said. Festival contest winner Diane Verhaeghe got to be on stage with Saturday’s headliners, California Beach Boys Tribute to the Beach Boys. The kid zone was also a big draw, with much more to do for kids than previous years, including a rock climbing wall. “The weather was great. It was an absolute perfect festival day. It was a 12 on a No. 10 scale.” Although Sunday was more challenging with the swing in weather, Geese was still pleased with the turnout. “A lot of the Caribbean community came out and supported it, as every year. So, there still was a lot of people there. Certainly not the amount that we had on Saturday. But what can you do about the weather, nothing,” said Geese. You have to always be put a little bit of spice into it, change the format a little bit,” said Geese. Other than that, Geese says, they are on the right track for the 13th annual event. “Overall there’s just nothing really to improve upon,” said Geese.

Summer ‘bad time’ for decision on North Lougheed land Pitt council discusses development options for commercial corridor by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter Environmentalists who oppose a plan to develop the North Lougheed corridor in Pitt Meadows are questioning why city council is being asked now, in summer, to make a decision that will guide development along the stretch for years to come. Council was set to discuss a study Tuesday that pitches three development options for the 50.9 hectares (125 acres) of land, located between Harris Road and Meadow Gardens Way. Of the land being considered for development, only 17.5 hectares (43 acres) is zoned highway commercial. The remaining 32.5 hectares (80 acres) would have to be removed

from the Agricultural Land Reserve. The Pitt Polder Preservation Society suspects there’s a reason why council is being asked to make a decision that will affect a large tract of farmland in July, when many residents are away on vacation. “I don’t understand what’s the big rush,” said society vice-president Peter Jongbloed, who postponed a vacation to attend Tuesday’s meeting after spotting the study on council’s agenda. “We are ﬁrmly against council excluding any more land. Every bit matters. It is important to preserve farmland. That’s the whole reason for the agricultural land reserve.” The City of Pitt Meadows, however, insists there was no ulterior reason for why the study reappeared on council’s agenda during summer. City director of operations Kim Grout said the timing of staff’s latest report was driven by a letter the city received from the Agricultural Land Commission, written June 14.

“This week’s meeting was the ﬁrst meeting available for that correspondence to be presented to council,” Grout explained. Of the three options sketched out by consultants in the study, the ones that set aside land for agricultural uses won’t generate enough money to cover the costs of building the North Lougheed Connector, a road that’s needed to access the commercial strip.

which option to support and whether to pursue an application to remove property from the agricultural land reserve. Residents of Pitt Meadows who commented on the study at an open house last year overwhelmingly favoured the land-use option that preserves the most farm land. The Agricultural Land Commission was asked for comment on the land-use study, but returned with a response that gives little direction to council. Executive director Brian Underhill said the commission will comment in detail when Pitt Meadows submits an exclusion application. “The commission did not take preference to one or more of the options,” explained Underhill. “The commission is not in any way prejudging what the outcome of an exclusion application may or may not be.”

veloper. The artistâ€™s concept presented to council on Monday will likely be changed during the development process. â€œItâ€™s a all conceptual,â€? said Andersen. â€œWe donâ€™t really know what itâ€™s going to look like when itâ€™s all ďŹ nished.â€? While Andersen said the project doesnâ€™t have a timeline yet, Maple Ridge public works general manager Frank Quinn said a project the size of the waterfront proposal would likely take six to seven years before it is completed. Goddard said he expects the application for rezoning to come within the next six months.

Council was unanimous in its praise for the project on Monday. â€œThe future is here,â€? said Mayor Ernie Daykin. â€œI know its got a ways to go, but itâ€™s taking Haney back to the water and the potential is huge. In 10 years there will be a huge difference in our downtown. â€œItâ€™s Maple Ridgeâ€™s time.â€?

This year is shaping up to be a record one for development for the District of Maple Ridge. So far this year, district staff have received more than 70 applications for development. Should that pace continue, it would make 2012 the busiest year on record for the districtâ€™s planning department, according Charles Goddard, development manager for the District. â€œConsidering the recession we are in, we are do-

ing very well,â€? said Chief Administrative OfďŹ cer Jim Rule. That development will have a total of 220 residential units on the property where the Paliottiâ€™s restaurant now stands. tween 223rd and 224th Streets. â€œItâ€™s a very dense, European street-faced development,â€? said Goddard. Across from the newly opened Thrifty Foods, a pair of low-rise residential apartments with ground ďŹ‚oor commercial are planned, with a construction cost of more than $10 million. In all, more than 3,000 residential units are currently in the works for downtown Maple Ridge. â€œSome of these sites have been vacant for more than 50 years,â€? said Frank Quinn, general

manager of public works. â€œIf someone comes to us with a proposal and it makes sense, weâ€™re going to work with them to make it happen.â€? Much of the growth has been centred in downtown Maple Ridge, thanks to the districtâ€™s Town Centre Investment Incentive program, which provides fast-tracked approval for development projects downtown, a municipal property tax exemption for three years, discounts on building permits, and money for property owners to renovate their buildingâ€™s facade.

Our own Port Haney The owner of the log sort business along the Fraser River in Maple Ridge wants to redevelop the property, building apartments and shops in historic Port Haney, as well as a marina and float plane dock. The concept is reminiscent of a plan put forward by aspiring politician Claus Andrup a decade or so ago, only for the Albion area. This is further west, stretching 600 metres from Kanaka Creek Regional Park to the wharf, all south of the train tracks. The plan outlines three apartment blocks, a row of townhomes, an office building and groundlevel retails space, including a restaurant, as well as a pedestrian walkway, wooden boardwalk and park, replacing the log sort business that has occupied the prime riverfront property for the past 40 years. The proposal was presented to council Monday. But the property owner, Canadian Overseas Group – which also operates the Blue Mountain woodlot, and the Andersen Pacific Forest Products sawmill in Ruskin – hasn’t decided if it will sell the property to a developer, or build the proposal itself. But council has been pushing it for years to do something different with the property, which, being a thin strip so near the CP Rail tracks, presents a few challenges. Still, this kind of project would not just enhance, but reshape downtown Maple Ridge. It could become like False Creek or Coal Harbour in Vancouver, a truly desirable place to be, a jewel of a village on the Fraser. But council must be diligent about what it wants and what it expects from any developer of this property. It’s too valuable for Maple Ridge let it become another Sawyer’s Landing, which, while a nice riverfront residential community, has yet to fulfill its promise. – The News Tell us what you think @ www.mapleridgenews.com

Hitting the information highway VICTORIA – By the time you read this, I should be in Vanderhoof, the geographical centre of B.C., to visit relatives. Born in the Okanagan, raised in the Peace country and working for 20 years in Metro Vancouver, I’ve driven from one B.C. Views Tom Fletcher end of the province to the other more times than I can count. A similar trip last year began just as a huge mudslide was cleared near Chilliwack. Other drives have featured mid-summer hail piled 10 centimetres deep on the Coquihalla, a near miss between two moose in the Pine Pass, plus the usual blizzards and hundreds of traffic jams for construction, accidents and growing urban volume delays. This time I’ve got a new tool on board, the mobile version of DriveBC. ca on my BlackBerry. Launched two years, ago, the mobile site has taken off with the surging popularity of smartphones. In the past year, DriveBC’s online traffic averaged 1.2 million visits a month, about half to the five-year-old desktop site and half from mobile users. It’s by far the most popular B.C. government website. I asked DriveBC technical leader Nainesh Agarwal for these stats, and he said even he was surprised by the surge in mobile traffic in recent

months. But trying out the mobile site, it’s easy to see the appeal. With a few clicks, the phone displays incident reports and web camera images for my chosen route. Webcams have been added steadily all over the province, and now watch 18 key locations on Vancouver Island, 93 in the Lower Mainland, 73 in the Southern Interior, 35 in the North and 13 at Canada-U.S. border crossings. At a glance, you can check anything from the traffic at the Lions Gate Bridge to the lineup for the Skidegate ferry on Haida Gwaii. Most pictures update every two minutes, offering a real-time look at traffic, weather and road conditions. A recent addition is “replay the day,” which shows the last 24 hours of pictures in a few seconds. Another new feature is an email alert that can be customized. You can subscribe to a particular region or highway and receive notices as soon as they are posted to the DriveBC network. And of course there is an @ drivebc Twitter feed, where between 6:30 a.m. and midnight, staff update conditions and respond to inquiries. (Major events are automatically tweeted overnight.) Verified reports are fed from highways staff and contractors all over the province and co-ordinated through the provincial highways condition centre in the Lower Mainland. It’s become a primary source of information for radio and TV traffic and news reporters around B.C. The mobile service now has an option for drivers to report new problems they encounter. After determining

your smartphone’s location, the site displays the name and phone number of the local maintenance contractor who can take the report. For those who haven’t joined the smartphone era, there is an old-fashioned option. Dialing 5-1-1 anywhere in the province gives access to a toll-free line that connects to recorded DriveBC messages. Agarwal said use of that service has been declining as phones with web access become more popular. The 5-1-1 service also requires you to use the keypad to select your route from a numerical list, so drivers would have to pull over rather than breach the new restrictions on using handheld devices while driving.

The 5-1-1 system still gets surges of heavy use during major events like the recent flooding. The plan is to upgrade the system to allow voice recognition, so drivers can use headsets to get updates on the move. Re: Residents sign tax petition (The News, July 11). Dean Rear, we know that municipal property taxes make up 50 per cent of the city’s revenue and they are continually increasing more rapidly than all other sources of revenue. When the city’s payment to suppliers of goods and services are reviewed for 2011, my ﬁrst questions are: who approves the expenses; how do you go about the tender process; and what due diligence is in place to ensure we are getting value for our money? Do we consider whether the expense is necessary? What audit controls are in place to monitor expenditures? There are many expenses that seem very high. Just to name a few, let’s look at the payment to Mosaic Osprey – $2,937,098.33, which represents close to 10 per cent of your expenses. What is this for? BMO Mastercard for $294,000 seems very high and I wonder if everyone working at city hall has an expense account? Others: A&G Demolition – $236.251; CDC Construction –$275,128; Columbia Bitulithic – $1,085,856; Dominion Fairmile – $1,702,418; Fraser Valley library – $987,208. There are too many others to mention, but there is also $2.4 million paid out for goods and services, where payments are $25,000 or less. I think that there is room too cut your expenses. Re: Residents sign tax petition (The News, July 11). Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters and council just don’t seem to understand what a budget is. When I make out my budget, if the money runs out, I make do with less. With the city budget, when the money runs out, they just increase our property taxes. Not once in the last 10 years has the city held spending down to even a zero increase, let alone decrease spending. When will we ﬁnally see some leadership and bring spending under control? How many on council or city employees have turned down raises or beneﬁts to help make ends meet? As for those budget meetings they want us to go to, what’s the point. Council and staff have had the numbers for weeks or months ahead of time and have already made up their minds on spending. I suggest that Mayor Walters appear on Til Debt Do Us Part and let Gail explain what a budget and uncontrolled spending is. ARCHIE BLANKERS PITT MEADOWS

At expense of dear values EDITOR, THE NEWS:

Re: Sounding like part of the 99 per cent, because I am (Letters, July 13). Sean Orcutt wrote that the B.C. Liberals “don’t want things to change” in terms of gender equity in the legislature. Really? They chose a female leader to serve as premier, eight of 18 members of cabinet are women, and their caucus has the same number of female members as the B.C. NDP caucus. I would like to see more women run for office at the senior levels of government, but not at the expense of values I hold dear: equality of opportunity, personal liberty, democracy, fairness, and the merit principle. Evidently the apologists for affirmative action are incapable of understanding the difference between equality of opportunity and equality of result. The B.C. NDP has sacrificed the former for the latter. The party has deliberately discriminated against potential candidates on the basis of their sex, able-bodiedness, sexual orientation, and race. Although I’m assuredly not a member of the NDP, I find it repugnant that such blatant discrimination should occur in Canada in the 21st Century. KIRK BROWN MAPLE RIDGE

An unquestioned fundamental principle in our societies has to do with what they call in economics “negative externalities.” People have all sorts of freedom and rights, but we do not recognize the freedom or right to expel proven toxins into public spaces (air, water, soil). We take all sorts of legislative steps to prevent health threats from proven pollutants. This is not about the right of people to smoke, but about their expelling that toxin into other’s homes (close proximity of back doors) and exposing others to something that has long been proven harmful to human health. No one needs to argue whether that exposure is safe or not– the evidence is in: 800,000 of those six million annual deaths are from second hand smoke. No one wants their family to be subjected to an experiment multiple times a day

with toxins that have been proven unsafe at any exposure. And again, to be clear on the freedom issue, no one should be subjected to an experiment (how much exposure, how long before damaging impacts, how far the effects may range) with something proven dangerous, especially when they have no choice about being subjected to the toxin. Children and other defenceless people are having their freedom of choice taken from them when someone expels a toxin into their personal space. And when moderate requests are made to resolve the problem, but are not respected, then we are obligated to take other steps to protect our families from proven harm. Business taxes to stay put Staff report finds Maple Ridges tax rates comparable to neighbouring communities by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter Businesses in Maple Ridge won’t have to worry about a tax increase next year, because there won’t be one. District staff told council tax rates for commercial and industrial properties were where they should be at council’s workshop meeting on Monday. “We’re not recommending any changes for the next tax year,” said Paul Gill, ﬁnancial services general manager for the District of Maple Ridge. “From a ﬁnance perspective, no matter how you roll the

dice, our tax rates are very well-positioned.” With a Class 6 business tax rate set at $11.75 per $1,000 of assessed property value, Maple Ridge has the seventh highest tax rate among 19 Lower Mainland municipalities. West Vancouver has the lowest, with $4.75, while Abbotsford is highest, with $15.34. However, municipalities with higher property values have the luxury of charging lower tax rates, noted Gill. “So as you move down the Fraser Valley, it’s no wonder tax rates increase, because property values get lower,” he said. Despite that fact, tax rates in Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, and New Westminster, which each have higher property values on average, also had higher tax rates than Maple Ridge. In 2012, assessed values for residential

properties increased by 1.6 per cent, while residential taxes increased 4.6 per cent, to $4.09 per $1,000 of assessed value. Commercial properties, meanwhile, saw an increase in assessed value of 9.8 per cent, while the tax rate was dropped from $12.10 to $11.75.

tual municipal taxes payable, in 2012, Maple Ridge is at or a little above the median when compared to neighbouring communities, the review concluded. Industrial property tax has become far more equitable in the past ﬁve years, and is now at a reasonable level, according to Gill. In 2007, the major industrial tax rate was $56.56 per $1,000 of assessed value. As a result, the Hammond Cedar Mill paid $613,737 in municipal property taxes that year on an assessed value of $10.8 million. In 2012, at a rate of $36.34, the mill paid $640,633 on an assessed value of $17.6 million. “Maple Ridge now seems well placed when compared to other municipalities in the Lower Mainland,” stated the report, but noted that staff would look to see if further improvements could be made.

A cold, rainy spring and high river levels have led to ideal conditions for breeding mosquitoes this summer in Maple Ridge and the Fraser Valley. â€œThe high flood level this year has left a lot of standing water, and that makes a lot more mosquito habitat,â€? said Scott McMahon, project manager with Culex Environmental, which operates the District of Maple Ridgeâ€™s mosquito control program. McMahon said the districtâ€™s nuisance mosquito hotline has been ringing off the hook this past month. Residents can call the hotline to report stagnant water on their property, and Culex will respond within 48 hours to treat it with a natural bacterial lar-

About one in 150 infected people experience serious illness.

Issue isn’t the breed of dog: Chortyk Pit bulls from front The proposed animal control bylaw was brought to council for discussion Monday morning, and is meant to replace the District’s outdated one, which dates back to 1977. Maple Ridge bylaws director Liz Holitzki said the singling out of pit bulls is designed to encourage responsible pet ownership. While both the district and the SPCA receive complaints about problem dogs of all breeds, there is signiﬁcant public concern about pit bulls in particular. “It’s not unusual to have a total ban, but that’s not the way to go,” Holitzki told council. However, while many communities have chosen to enact similar bylaws singling out a particular breed, they have had little positive effect, according to Lorie Chortyk, spokesperson for the B.C. SPCA. “The issue isn’t the breed of dogs, it’s the dog owners who aren’t being responsible,” she said. The SPCA doesn’t support breed-speciﬁc bans or bylaws, because such legislation punishes responsible dog owners instead of encouraging them, and provides a false sense of security for residents. Among the breeds most often associated with dog bites, Chortyk said golden retrievers and Chihuahuas are the worst offenders. “Pit bulls are actually way down

Other breeds are often mistaken for pit bulls, which has unfairly given the breed a bad reputation. “Any time there’s a stocky short-haired dog that’s involved in a dog bite and runs off, its automatically a pit bull,” said Chortyk. “But that’s not always the case.” In some jurisdictions in the U.S., dozens of breeds have been banned over the past decades as problem owners move on to different types of dogs. “But they are still having problems, because their laws don’t deal with the dog owners.” Any dog with strong jaws and a prey drive needs to be well-managed, but pit bulls aren’t the only breed to fall into that category.

Chortyk suggested offering a discount on licenses to dog owners who can prove their dog has successfully passed obedience school would be more effective. “That way it’s not punitive to responsible dog owners,” she said. Requiring all male dogs to be neutered would also help to prevent dog bites, as well as keep the dog population under control. However, Holitzki noted that the SPCA has a different mandate than Maple Ridge bylaws enforcement, and that it was important for the district to act ﬁrst to protect residents from aggressive dogs to prevent dog attacks. “We look to protect the residents as opposed to the animal,” Holitzki said. “But certainly we can wait and react when someone gets bit.” Councillors also expressed trepidation at including breedspeciﬁc language in the bylaw. “It’s a bit discriminatory,” said Coun. Mike Morden. “I’d like to see these dogs dealt with on an individual basis.” He added that if the licensing fee is made to be exorbitant, owners of aggressive dogs simply won’t register their dogs with the district. Mayor Ernie Daykin noted it wasn’t large breeds that posed a threat, in his experience. “As a paperboy, it wasn’t the big dogs that bit me, it was the little ones,” Daykin said. “But they don’t do as much damage.”

From Whistle Punk to Steampunk S

teampunk is the future as written from the past, and probably no writer of the past has so frequently educated and entertained his future than William Shakespeare. This summer’s Bard on the Bandstand performance of Love’s Labour’s Lost will feature costumes and sets inspired by steampunk fiction and movies. For the uninitiated, you have to put yourself back into the age of steam and consider its implications. It was the beginning of the industrial revolution when steam-powered engines first replaced man and horse power to work tirelessly on our behalf. It must have been an exciting time for the imaginative, and by the 1870s, there were science fiction writers like Jules Verne, who were predicting the expanded capacities of the future based on the steam technology of their day. Imagine your cell phone or laptop as the Victorians would have built them. Of course, the Victorians had

We have seen essential steampunk, with its characteristic riveted sheet metal and multitude of gears, incorporated into television and movies since Disney made 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. In more recent times, Dune, Wild Wild West and Sherlock Holmes have done high-tech Victorian. In Maple Ridge, the most game-changing steam-based technology was the steam donkey used for logging. Not only could it pull a greater load than horses

or oxen, it could be mounted on a railway car to aid in the loading of logs directly onto rail cars, which opened up our forest resources that were not immediately adjacent to water. Those railways were also operating with steam locomotives. The characteristic look of steampunk can easily be seen in the steam donkeys – the big riveted boiler, large gears, and steam whistles for communication. That’s where the term ‘punk’ ﬁrst appears in relation to steam. The ‘whistle punk’ was the person who operated a steam whistle as a means of signalling to the man running the

donkey engine to let him know that the next log was prepared for hauling. Steam-powered engines were versatile and, while heavy, could be moved around to where they were needed. Steam engines powered the Haney Brick and Tile plant, ﬁxed and mobile lumber mills, silage machines and much more. An entire milling operation could be set up and run off a steam donkey until the easily accessible timber was all cut, then the whole works could be moved to a new location. In 1975, an old Brown and Kirkland steam donkey was rescued from the woods and set in place at the UBC Research Forest. The people there are about to embark on a restoration project on the old engine and are looking for volunteers to help. n many homes, adding a pet to the family usually involves carefully choosing the right animal. The family goes together and brings their new puppy or kitten home. They go through the trials and tribulations of puppy and kittenhood together. The family bonds with the new baby, and the kids get to grow up with the animal at their side. Our home is very different. When you have volunteered for an animal shelter as long as I have, you learn that puppies and kittens will always ﬁnd homes. It’s the old, the sick, and the ones with behavioural issues that spend too much time in shelters waiting for a forever home. In our home, the introduction of a new family pet is usually accompanied by a warning such as “this one may not be with us for too long because he is sick,” or “be careful, this one bites.” Currently, our household consists of: Squamish, a 10-year-old diabetic cat; Carson, an FIV positive cat who will probably never live to a ripe old age; Marielle, a shy and skittish cat that prefers to come out at night; and Emma, a seven-year-old dog with separation anxiety, among other behavioural issues. They are all recent additions. The last group didn’t last very long. Two died within a month of coming into our home from pre-existing medical conditions. Prior to that, we had a very old girl who barely lasted two months, and so on. My kids and I were away on holidays when one of the last ones died. When we were driving back, my husband called to tell me that she had

Carson, an FIV positive cat. died at the vets while having her dental because of heart problems we were not aware of. This cat had only been with us for a couple of weeks. Through my tears, I told my ﬁve-year-old son that Feather was gone. He cried too and then said, “I guess that means there is room at our house for three more cats.” My kids know that the animals who come to us may, or may not be around for a long time. I tell them that they are with us because no one deserves to spend their last years, months, days in a shelter. I tell them that every animal wants a loving home where they are safe, warm, and fed. My kids are both young, but they seem to understand this. They mourn the loss of each when they die, but move on quickly, and are eager to let a new animal into their life. They accept them immediately and make the best of each situation. They also respect the fact that some of our animals are not too friendly and need their space. They comfort the sick ones, play with the friendly ones, and give room

to those who prefer to be left alone. Of course, both my boys have asked for a kitten and a puppy at one time or another. Sometimes I feel guilty that I am somehow denying them the privilege of watching a kitten or a puppy grow up. I worry that they may never have that special dog or cat who they fondly remember when they are older as having grown up with. But then I re-assure myself with the thought that, as there are different types of families, there are also different types of pet ownership. I hope that I am teaching them a valuable lesson about compassion, and that they will grow up knowing our house was always full, and although they can’t remember all the names of our animals, they were all special in their own way. We don’t go out and bring an animal home that we fell in love with. We bring home those who need us, then learn to love them. Find the leader inside you Keynote speaker Robert Murray shares his secrets to success in a new book by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter

t’s taken Robert Murray a lifetime to study leadership, but only a year to put the words down on paper. By quietly observing the world around him and the people who populate it, he’s been sketching a formula that’s allowed him to take charge. “Leadership is all about getting people to dance to music that hasn’t been heard yet,” he says. “It’s about getting people to do things they normally wouldn’t do on their own.” A passionate storyteller and mentor, Murray draws on more than 20 years of experience as a senior business executive in 12 countries for anecdotes and lessons to help others find their inner leader. His path to success, though, has been unique. An electrician by trade, Murray, proudly admits he does not have a university degree. The 17 different projects he’s guided from concept to fruition have given him an insight into leadership and life he couldn’t get in a classroom. He climbed the corporate ladder by drawing inspiration from people around

He’s also gathered the lessons in a book titled It’s Already Inside that’s garnered rave reviews from readers, who include

Don Wright, the CEO of the B.C. Institute of Technology, and Don Bell, who founded WestJet. In 36 chapters, Murray shows readers how they can apply his advice to their situations. He ask them to digest the message and ends every chapter with a set of questions meant to provoke further thought. “Every human being on the planet is born not knowing the word no. Not knowing they can’t do things,” says Murray. “Through exposure to our parents, our relatives, friends, teachers, coaches, we turn out this 20-something individual who goes out into the world, completely lacking the confidence that he had as a child.” Murray shares stories from his own life to steer others towards their own epiphanies. “I was a really lucky guy to have met Terry Fox in Grade 8 at Mary Hill Junior Secondary School,” says Murray, who has lived in Maple Ridge with his family since 1988. “The guy was amazing and this was way before he got cancer. There was nothing that got him down. He just kept looking for the sunshine in everything. When you are around a guy like that, it rubs off on you.” He thinks of Fox every time he’s ready to throw in the towel. A true leader’s attitude, Murray says, is unshakable. It’s contagious. display of suspended sculptures by Chilliwack artist Sylvie Roussel-Janssens will light up the lobby of the ACT in Maple Ridge this summer. The series of aquatically inspired works will be hung in the main windows, where the natural light will illuminate these opaque, two-dimensional suspended pieces, each a representation of a local lake. “How Deep is your Lake is inspired by the beauty and fragility of our aquatic environment,” says Roussel-Janssens. “My sculptural installation art practice is concerned with history and the environment and, for this project I am looking at a total of six lakes in British Columbia. My goal is to create large im-

ages that are abstract when seen from a distance, but full of accurately detailed geographic references when viewed in close proximity.” In choosing lakes as her subject for this series, Roussel-Janssens charts and combines tangible landscapes with abstract, symmetrical imagery. This presentation arises initially from her preoccupation with mapping local B.C. territory. To begin her process, she photocopies enlarged ‘bathymetric’ (depth) maps onto acetate, sews them onto polyester fabric, then suspends each piece within large approximately 80” by 60” metal frames. Roussel-Janssens is also attracted to the purely visual perspective offered by the enhanced map renderings on which her work is based, and she deliberately chooses bodies of water that lend themselves to the pleasing mirror-image symmetry that is featured throughout

this series. Those who frequent The Maple Ridge Art Gallery may recall the stunning window pieces that Roussel-Janssens created when she participated in the Women Who Work with Metal exhibition that was featured last October. A fuller representation of the series How Deep is Your Lake will be at the art gallery until September 15.

He proves she belongs at world junior tourney contributor Muni He of Pitt Meadows is quickly making a name for herself on the world stage. He fired an impressive one-under-par 71 on the final day of the Callaway World Junior Golf Championships in San Diego on Friday for a share of second place in the girls’ 13-to14-year-old division. He finished the three-round championship play at six-under, tied with Rose Huang of Honolulu and five strokes back of winner, Lilia Kha-Tu Vo of Fountain Valley, California. He opened the tournament, played at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo, with a sizzling four-under-par 68 to sit atop the leader board. However, two consecutive rounds of one-under par were not enough to hold of the eventual winner Vo, who charged up the leader board in the second round, carding a blistering seven-under-par 65. He, sitting two strokes back going into the final round, was unable to make a move as Vo fired a fourunder 68 to close out the tournament. He finished as the top Canadian in the event, which features more than 1,200 participants representing 56 countries as well as 42 U.S. States. The tournament has seen past winners such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els. Closer to home, Kevin Kwon of Swan-e-Set Bay Resort and Country Club in Pitt Meadows couldn’t hold on to his third-round lead at the 2012 British Columbia Junior Boys’ Championship played at the Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club in Osoyoos and fell to a tie for third after firing a five-over-par 77 in Friday’s final round. Kwon had led the tournament after Rounds 2 and 3, sitting at six-under and three strokes up on Matthew Broughton of Victoria. Broughton fired a final round of two-under 70 to take the championship. Kwon’s final round 77 also cost him a spot on Team B.C. that will play at the Canadian Junior Boys’ Championship at the Osprey Ridge Golf Club in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia on July 31 to Aug. 3. Burrards continue to struggle contributor The Maple Ridge Burrards continue to be competitive, but can’t seal down a win. The Burrards dropped a pair of games last week, leaving them with a 2-12-1 record and an overall .167 winning percentage. The Burrards fell 11-8 to the Coquitam Adanacs Sunday at Planet Ice, despite outshooting their opposition 38-36. The game got off to a good start for the Burrards, as Garrett McIntosh notched his second goal of the season just 59 seconds into the contest. After the Adanacs tied the score 1-1, Maple Ridge’s Aaron Davis put the home squad back in front at the 5:57 mark of the opening frame. However, that would be the Burrards’ last lead in the game. Two goals in less than a minute close to the halfway mark of the ﬁrst saw the Adanacs jump into a

lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Trailing 3-2 going into the middle frame, the Burrards gave up six goals on just 12 shots while mustering four goals, despite peppering Adanacs’ goalie Nick Rose with 19 shots. The Burrards had no answer against the league’s leader in wins. Rose has eight victories this season for the second place Adanacs, as well as the second best save goals against average at 7.50. Colton Porter led the Burrards’ attack with a goal and three helpers, while Randy Daly and Jerrett Davis each had a goal and two assists. Trailing 9-6 heading into the third, the Burrards fell behind by ﬁve with little more than nine minutes left in the frame. The home team got a boost with two goals 24 seconds by Patrick O’Meara and Porter with 6:30 minutes left in the game. However, Rose shut the door the rest of the way.

The loss comes on the heels of the Burrards’ 12-9 loss to the Nanaimo Timbermen a night earlier on the Island. And once again it was the second period that proved to be the Burrards’ downfall. The teams were all square at 4-4 heading into the middle stanza, when the Timbermen tallied ﬁve goals on 18 shots and opened a 9-7 lead heading into the third. Jarrett Davis led the Burrards’ attack with four goals and three assists, while Riley Loewen notched four goals and an assist. Brandon Bertoia chipped in with a goal and four assists. The Burrards next two games are on the road, with stops in Victoria, Friday, July 20, against the Shamrocks, then in Langley Wednesday, July 25.

Stewart garners All-American status contributor Devon Stewart’s stock continues to rise as the Canisius College right-hander has been named a Louisville Slugger Freshman AllAmerican by Collegiate Baseball newspaper. The honour comes on top of Stewart being named the 2012 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year. Stewart was the only player from the MAAC to earn Freshman AllAmerican honors from Collegiate Baseball.

The Maple Ridge pitcher made 15 starts during his freshman season, recording a 6-4 record with a 3.80 earned run average in 94.2 innings pitched. Stewart’s innings pitched are the most ever by a rookie pitcher at Canisius College. Stewart also had three complete games in 2012. Pitching in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Stewart led all divisional freshman in ERA, innings pitched, starts, and strikeouts, with 60. He was tied for

the most wins. He and teammate Billy Martin were the only two pitchers in the MAAC to make 15 starts in the season. Equally impressive was Stewart’s ability to go deep into his starts. Twelve of his appearances were considered quality starts, going more than six innings. He allowed three runs or fewer in 11 starts. Stewart’s season culminated with a pair of big-game wins. He recorded the win in the 2012 MAAC championship game, lasting eight

innings in a 10-3 victory over Rider University. The 6-foot-2 righty allowed three runs, two earned, and struck out seven Other highlights included a seven-inning shutout of Iona College, allowing one Gael to reach third base. Stewart retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced and recorded a ﬁrst-pitch strike to 20 of the 27 batters he faced. Stewart also had nine strikeouts against Penn State, the most by a Golden Grifﬁn freshman since the 2000 season.

Disc golf tourney set for Thornhill Park There’s no need to worry about breaking your $800 driver or losing a $7 ball in the water for this golf tournament. Maple Ridge Ultimate is setting up shop in Thornhill Park for its second annual Disc Golf Tournament on Saturday. The event kicks off at 10 a.m. and all level of competitors are welcome. The entry fee to play is $10. Entrants can use their own discs or borrow at the course.

The family-oriented event will feature food available on course as well as treats for the kids. There is also a barbeque scheduled at the conclusion of the event. Big ball hockey weekend for Renegades The Ridge Meadows Renegades had one thing in mind as they took to the floor for the gold medal game in the U-15 division of the 2012 Western Challenge Cup. The Renegades were seeking revenge for their only loss in the tournament, a 4-3 decision to Saskatchewan. Revenge is exactly what they extracted as the Renegades played tight defence to drop the Prairie team 3-1 to take home the gold at the Kensington Park Arena in Burnaby on Sunday. The U-15 Renegades’ stifling defence should have come as no surprise to Saskatchewan, as the Ridge Meadows team entered the gold-medal game having drubbed Manitoba 7-1 in quarterfinal action, then blanked the Surrey Scorpions 6-0 in the semis. The Renegades opened the tournament with a 2-2 draw against the Valley Hawks. After their loss to Saskatchewan, the Renegades halted the Richmond Attack 10-2. • The U-17 Renegades earned silver at the Western Challenge Cup in Vancouver. The Renegades faced the Delta Giants in the gold-medal game Sunday, the same team that beat them 8-5 in the final game of round-robin play. Despite a valiant effort, the U-17 team ran out of gas in the final, dropping a 9-3 decision for a silver medal.

The hardware was well earned for a team that opened the tournament with two straight losses, 5-4 to Metro and 5-2 to the Valley Flyers. The U-17 Renegades salvaged their tournament with an 8-1 win over the Richmond Blazers and a 4-1 victory over the Surrey Scorpions. The win against Surrey proved to be the tiebreaker the Renegades needed to make it to the playoff round, as both teams finished with a 2-3 record in the preliminary round. They punched their ticket to the gold medal game by tripping up the Valley Flyers 5-3 in the semi-finals. • The Ridge Meadows Renegades stuck to their game plan and earned bronze in the U-13 division at the Western Challenge Cup ball hockey tournament in Burnaby on Sunday. The U-13 Renegades bounced back from a 7-2 semi-final loss to the Edmonton Xtreme to claim bronze with a 3-2 win over the Surrey Scorpions. Coach Dave Weloy said he was proud of how his team battled throughout the weekend. He said the team philosophy is built around five Ds: dedication, desire, discipline, drive and determination . “It’s the players and our goalies with positive attitudes that follow team systems and fight with

a ﬁre in the belly that make us true champions, win or lose,” said Weloy. “I am very proud of our players and enjoyed the experience of high-level competition and building new friendships.” The Renegades went 3-0 in the opening round at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre. The team opened the tournament with a 2-1 win over the Xtreme, followed by wins of 5-3 over the Scorpions and a 4-2 win over the Richmond Rockets. Henry was born in Paraguay and moved to Canada in 1960. Henry passed away early morning July 9. Henry left behind a wife (Dianne) three kids (Tabatha, Drew, and Emily). He also had an older brother (Peter) Twin sister (Helen) and younger sister (Anna). He is also predeceased by his mother (Maria), father (Ernst), brother (John), Son (Michael), and best friend (Bear). He also had 6 grandchildren. Henry was the towns go to handy man, he was the jack of all trades he always would lend a helping hand whenever someone needed it. He will always be missed and never forgotten. Funeral Service will take place on Friday July 20th 2012 at 2:30, at Maple Ridge Baptist Church, 22155 Lougheed Highway.

We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of - Dave, beloved husband, father, brother and uncle. He leaves behind him his loving wife Paula of 23 years, and four children, Kyle, Reginald, Dominic and Brianna. Dave was devoted to all of his family. He loved to laugh, gillnet fish, hunt, ride his Harley, and be on the sidelines cheering his children on while they played soccer and lacrosse. Dave was an extremely generous man. He will be remembered by all, for the good times with good friends, family events of all kinds. He will also be cherished forever by his brother Mike (Roma), sisters Theresa (George), Linda and many many nieces, nephews and cousins.
