Canada's electoral districts are reviewed every 10 years by independent commissions in each province. Population numbers – as captured in the federal census – as well as geographic and historical factors are considered in the review process. B.C.'s population jumped from 3,907,738 in 2001 to 4,400,057, says 2011 census statistics. "As chair of the British Columbia Commission, I shall seek to ensure that designated new electoral boundaries and districts in this province will be fair to voters in terms of representational equality and regional representation and reflect historic patterns of representation," said Justice John E. Hall. Locally, a public hearing has been set for Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn. Those wishing to make a presentation must register by Aug. 30. Be careful how you beat the heat now that summer temperatures are here. That's the message from the Delta Police Department which will be conducting Summer Counter Attack Road Blocks at various locations throughout the community starting this weekend and lasting throughout the rest of July and into August. While the DPD says that road safety is a year-round priority officers and volunteers will be on the lookout for numerous driving infractions, from speed and aggressive driving to seatbelt enforcement. "These initiatives are carried out for enforcement and educational purposes in an effort to reduce the carnage on our highways," states a DPD press release. Delta Police are urging drivers and passengers to consider the following to stay safe on the roads: • Never get into a vehicle if the driver is not sober. • Pre-plan your transportation options: taxi, public transportation, designated driver, a volunteer organization that offers transportation on a donation basis, or a family member or friend. Arrange a meeting time and location. "When sober these considerations appear to be common sense. However, alcohol is known to impair common sense and judgment," states the DPD press release. "If you are attending an event where alcohol will be served make these considerations while you are sober. The life you save just might be your own." Delta Police are also encouraging the public to call them immediately if you suspect a drunk driver is on the road. —Staff writer

Gas tanks punctured Delta Fire and Emergency Services requested the assistance of the Delta Police on Annacis Island Tuesday (July 10) after discovering three vehicles in the 500 block of Ebury Place had their gas tanks punctured in an attempted theft of fuel. The gas spill was contained and cleaned up by the Delta Fire and Emergency Service's Hazmat Team without further damages. Delta Police investigators conducted a canvass of local businesses around the scene in an attempt to locate possible video surveillance to assist in identifying possible suspects in this incident. The investigation is on going. —Staff writer

Sport can help transform lives. Alan Bates has seen it first-hand many times. And thanks to that the former Tsawwassen soccer player is in the running for a $10,000 charitable donation to help others enjoy the “beautiful game” and improve their fortunes. Bates, who attended Cliff Drive Elementary school and graduated from South Delta Secondary, is the Vancouver Whitecaps’ nominee in the Major League Soccer Community MVP Award, in an on-line competition seeking votes from fans across North America. A resident psychiatrist at UBC Bates founded the Vancouver Street Soccer League for those affected by homelessness. Every Sunday Bates, who works in some of the medical clinics and hospitals on the Downtown Eastside, leads the practice for Portland FC—named after the Portland Hotel Society, one of the city’s largest social housing providers. And many of those who show up to kick the ball around for fun experience plenty of other benefits. “I was never an elite soccer player but definitely recognized the game’s potential to help people with their self confidence and identity,” said Bates, a right-sided fullback who was a member of the Tsawwassen Cougars team that was one of the first Tsawwassen teams to win a provincial title. “And I think that’s why it works with the street soccer players.” Bates said there has been research done at UBC on the effects of participating in the street soccer league that showed the players ultimately found better housing, got employment, reduced their drug use, made

friends and got into trouble with the police less often. “We’re seeing all of these positives effects of just having friends, a social network, and being part of a team,” Bates said. Bates, 35, discovered street soccer through Facebook four years ago and volunteered as a coach for Vancouver’s first street soccer team called the Dreamcatchers. And as he saw the positive effects mount he became more involved with the league and is now its president. One of those players who showed a remarkable turnaround was Patrick Oldman who captained Bates’ team that played in the Homeless World Cup in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2010. “He (Oldman) just started playing soccer that year—he’d never played before—and just a month or two ago he completed the Vancouver Marathon,” Bates said.

The Metro Vancouver board is objecting to the province's decision to phase out AirCare testing for regular vehicles by the end of 2014. The regional district voted June 15 to write to Environment Minister Terry Lake expressing its concerns that the cancellation of the program will erode air quality gains in the Lower Main-

She has made inroads in dispelling the myth that it's unaffordable to eat healthy. Asian lettuce wraps now land on dinner plates in place of hamburgers. Rewind one year, when Chernoff was learning of a typical TFN diet: "very starchy, high sodium, preservatives and not a lot of fresh vegetables." So, she will soon dangle a carrot, a garden box program, which will see Chernoff entice Healthy Living program participants with fresh produce. Looking outside her office window, Chernoff points to a small, budding fruit and vegetable plot adjacent to the TFN administration building. Started recently by a TFN elder, Chernoff believes the Healthy Living program may have been the impetus for the community garden. Another component of the program is fall prevention and physiotherapy. Her rehabilitation assistant background allows Chernoff to work with TFN residents suffering from everything from soft tissue damage to traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord trauma. At the end of the day, working with the TFN is a humanizing experience for Chernoff. "There is such a strong vision here," she says. "I feel very accepted here."

Beaver 'tale' at local golf course Busy rodent dams pond at Beach Grove Golf Club PHILIP RAPHAEL EDITOR

Properties with views of a golf course in Tsawwassen tend to be quite pricey. But so far, the latest local resident with the links right in his back and front yard is enjoying the surroundings for free. The tenant is a lone beaver who has taken up occupancy in one of the ponds at Beach Grove Golf Course. Course officials said the bucktoothed critter is quite the talk among club members as they stroll around the pond where he has constructed a small dam. While he's not considered a problem, the beaver has taken down some small trees in the area, one with a trunk roughly the same girth as a person's thigh. Longtime Boundary Bay resident Shirley Karmazyn learned about the beaver taking up residence a few weeks ago when she saw traffic adjacent to the golf course being slowed down to allow it to cross the roadway to his new home. And Karmazyn's daughter saw the beaver while visiting the home of her friend's grandparents who have a view overlooking the golf course. Officials at the Burnaby-based

But a golf course is not the best place for a beaver to set up a new home, said Lesley Fox, executive director. "I like to think of beavers as a good luck charm," she said. "Although a golf course with all the use of fertilizers may not provide the best conditions for a beaver. Then there's also the question of safety if he or she is taking down trees." "One of the things beavers need when they set up a dam or a lodge is wood. And if he they can't access a good enough supply they will likely move on." Fox added that if the golf course decides to allow the beaver to take up residency there are ways to limit its impact on the environment by installing special flow valves to a pond or stream that has been dammed. editor@southdeltaleader.com

Joanne Lechner's recipe for Batch Spaghetti Sauce is one of her daughter Kora's favourites. Kristine Salzmann photo

Eating 'in' Stock restaurant-quality meals in your freezer with the help of Ladner chef "It's the best of the season, what we're using. Right now I buy corn on the cob and take all the corn kernels off instead of using frozen." "It's just really healthy and wholesome," she adds. "When you go to the grocery store frozen food aisle what you're getting isn't really nutritious or delicious." The mom of two children, ages five and eight, says the meals she creates for batch.food. are the same she feeds her kids. "It's that standard. We're willing to feed it to our family, happily." Recently featured on the menu were two pies that received accolades at a Tourism Richmond pie contest in June. Husband Morgan Lechner, also a chef, received honorable mentions for his savory turkey dinner pot pie, but it was no match for his wife's balsamic glazed strawberry pie with local strawberries, rosemary rhubarb compote and black pepper cream cheese filling, which was named "most outstanding." —Kristine Salzmann

Batch Spaghetti Sauce INGREDIENTS 50ml oil 450g diced white onion 1kg ground turkey 100g diced celery

200g diced or grated carrot 20g garlic chopped 4 cans of diced tomato 2 cans of crushed tomato 40g Italian herbs salt, pepper and sugar to taste

DIRECTIONS Preheat a large stock pot on medium heat, add oil and then onion. Once onions are translucent add garlic and turkey, season liberally with salt and pepper. Cook until browned and liquid has cooked off. Add celery, carrot and diced tomato.

Cook on low heat, simmering for two to three hours. Finish with crushed tomato and herbs. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of sugar. Cool quickly in iced water, stirring frequently. Once chilled, divide and freeze in four equal portions.

From Anywhere, Anytime

Most people are familiar with this story: you get home from a long day at work and just don't know what to feed your family. You hope whatever you rustle up will not only be quick and easy, but nutritious to boot. This is where Joanne Lechner steps in. The Ladner chef cooks up healthy meals with seasonal, fresh ingredients for you to store in your freezer and pull out at your convenience. Think creamy corn chowder, maple pecan crunch chicken breasts, Asian marinated salmon and coconut basmati rice. Lechner just recently launched her business, batch.food. (batchfood. com), which has so far been based out of her home, but will be established in Richmond this month. Customers place their orders and pick up their meals at her office or can choose home delivery—currently she serves residences in Richmond, Delta, Surrey and White Rock (minimum $50 order for deliveries). The menu changes weekly, inspired by Lechner's trips to the local vegetable market.

Open for business? Were you and your family disappointed when the Centennial Beach Café was not open to serve the locals who wanted to celebrate Canada Day weekend in Centennial Park? My first attempt with my family was on Friday (June 29), hoping for lunch. Sure, there were some trades there doing finishing touches, but on a Friday of a long summer weekend after months and months? On Saturday, which is really the first day for most families to begin the long weekend, again a group of us went to the Centennial Beach Café only to find it closed, no trades people as my gosh, it was a weekend, but neither was there any sign of explanation. The proposed changes to election boundaries, seen here, would give Delta a single riding that is now shared with East Richmond and Surrey's Newton area.

It's time Delta be considered whole Centennial Beach concession stand. File photo and the Park website I go. There it was, “Centennial Beach Café Open 7 Days a Week.” Extremely accommodating hours were also mentioned. On Sunday, surely they have ironed out the kinks, so off I go with the husband and dog (on a leash). The park and beach were filled with families doing their own barbecuing and people circling the building to see if it was open to the public. My third day of disappointment!

My husband inquired to a member of the park’s crew picking up litter on the beach and was told that the café was still awaiting permits from Delta. Shame on that group! Metro Vancouver, whom I presume are the owners of this fine new establishment, surely lost revenue but even more important, respect and any future support from myself and neighbours of this area.

drove him to Intercity After Hours Emergency. Unfortunately, he had to be euthanized as his injuries were too severe. Our cat came to us from the wild, and while we could take Charlie out of the wild, we couldn't get all the wild out of Charlie. Part of his terms was being able to enjoy the outdoors at night, mostly just sleeping on his favorite chair on our patio. Likely due to an interaction

with another animal, our streetsmart tabby ran out of luck. We are privileged he spent the too short time with us, but, one thing he taught us, each moment counted. So, I hope you two Good Samaritans see this, and know that Charlie was the luckiest cat in the world to have had you with him at the end. Thank you for your kindness.

It's about time that Delta be designated as a single federal electoral riding. For too long Delta has shared MPs with neighbouring communities which has perpetuated the feeling of separation between North and South Delta, while also fragmenting and diluting the attention from Ottawa. What is currently being considered by the Electoral Boundaries Commission is making Delta whole, with one representative in the nation's capital. Right now, Delta is carved into two sections with federal ridings for Delta-Richmond East, and Newton-North Delta. While the respective MPs presently serve their respective constituents well, the division has done little to help create a united community that already has to deal with geographic and ethnic divides. Based mostly on population increases over 10-year intervals, the re-drawing of electoral boundaries is proposing a single riding that encompasses all of Delta, except Annacis Island, and the lands belonging to the Musqueam and Tsawwassen First Nations. A new, stand alone, Delta riding is one of six new electoral districts being considered for British Columbia. With a population of just over 100,000 in Delta, the time is more than right to have a single representative at the federal level. Someone speaking for the overall community— both North and South Delta—can only create a sense of unity sadly lacking now. A single, elected voice can help provide residents with a better understanding of the challenges faced and successes achieved in the town centres of Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta. And the better we know that the more we can all define what it is to be a resident of Delta which can, in turn, lead to a more effective pitch to Ottawa for assistance in areas where federal help is welcomed. Local residents will get their chance to voice their opinions on the matter two months from now (Sept. 13) when the British Columbia Commission will hold a public hearing in Tsawwassen. Chances are that the message from those attending will be to move ahead and make Delta whole. And that is a shift in the right direction for all Deltans.

TFN elder hopes for reconciliation Ruth Adams is hoping the event will draw more attention to First Nations history and culture in B.C. MARIA SPITALELEISK REPORTER

Attending the 36th Annual Elders’ Gathering—being held in Abbotsford today (July 10) through Thursday— will be a bittersweet experience for Tsawwassen First Nation elder Ruth Adams. Today, she will pass through the community she grew up in, Mission, before taking centre stage at Tradex (Fraser Valley Trade & Exhibition Centre) to give the opening prayer. The racism she endured as a child and her optimism for future First Nations generations will be at the back of her mind. The TFN is a co-host of the Annual Elders’ Gathering, along with the Sto:lo Communities. Adams said TFN elders were asked if they wanted to share the hosting duties after another First Nation’s bid fell through. “I thought it would be an honour because we have never had anything

to do with a gathering since my ancestors,” said Adams on Monday, in the Elders’ Centre on the TFN land. She recalled how her grandfather, one-time TFN chief Peter Jacobs, was a great storyteller. “He’s the one who gave me all of the encouragement,” added Adams. “That’s where my love of public speaking comes from.” The purpose of the gathering is for elders to socialize, share their accomplishments and prepare themselves for future work. They also share their traditional ways—through song, dance and ceremonies throughout the event— with visiting cultural and linguistic groups. The theme is “Lets’emot”— One Heart, One Mind, One Family. Last year, more than 1,500 participants attended the gathering each day, participating in meetings, workshops and various other activities. This year, more than 3,000 guests are expected

to attend today’s opening ceremony alone. “I think for me the biggest part is truth and reconciliation between the [non-First Nations] sponsors [of the event] and the elders,” said Adams. And Adams, who was raised off the reserve in Mission, doesn’t mince

words when speaking about her childhood. “To be truthful it was not very nice,” she said. “It was quite racist, especially in the high school. You know what’s sad? I thought that all the First Nations [students] in the Continued on P11

Ladner author pens new children's book

Learn about your device

'Cul-de-Sac Kids' signing Saturday at Black Bond Books Ladner writer Alison Acheson will be signing copies of her recently published book The Culde-Sac Kids on July 14 at Black Bond Books in Ladner. This is the seventh book Acheson has published and her sixth children's story. It follows main characters Kezie, Patrick and Jed, who miss their friend Noli when she moves away. A single man with no children moves into the vacated house and

they discover he is about to become a step-father. The kids develop some serious concerns about his ability to be a father: he can’t play hockey, can’t build a tent, can’t even order the right sort of pizza. So, they decide to put him through the paces of Dad School and they’ll be the teachers. As a kid growing up in Tsawwassen, Acheson’s home was on a busy corner and says she envied her friends who lived in the cul-de-sacs farther

down the street. Now, as a writer, she says the best part of her work is that through story-telling you can do and be all the things you want. Acheson’s previous books range from a picture book, Grandpa’s Music (about a young girl living with a grandpa with Alzheimer's), to a young adult novel, Mud Girl (set on River Road), a Canadian Library Association Book of the Year finalist.

announced she is running for one of 12 TFN legislator seats this September. She already considers herself the unofficial liaison between the Corporation of Delta and the TFN. “I want to bring all that I am involved with [to TFN council],” said Adams. “Making connections, I figure I can be a good source for that part.” Her election platform will examine relationships between the TFN and its non-First Nations

neighbours. Adams has already made connections with cycling groups in Vancouver and invited them to tour the TFN lands. “I want our children to be involved in the things going in society today. Cycling is a healthy initiative,” said Adams. Ultimately, for Adams, it’s about striking a balance between past and present cultures, and leaving behind a legacy for her 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

residential schools were lucky.” Adams is calling on all Canadian governments to further develop First Nations education programs, to allow elders to speak at schools about culture and tradition, and to declare National Aboriginal Day a statutory holiday in all provinces. “It’s a good way for people to see elders—to know that there are many and introduce them to the community,” she said. As for achieving elder status, 70-year-old Adams said age is only part of the equation. At 60-years-old, First Nations members get special recognition; however, speaking privileges must be earned. “It’s someone who will share their knowledge with whoever and whenever they are asked,” explained Adams. When asked why the TFN has never solely hosted the Annual Elders’ Gathering, Adams cited financial reasons, saying it costs a lot of money to put on a event of this magnitude. But a newly-formed Annual BC Elders Gathering Society, spearheaded by the TFN this past spring, is expected to ease the financial burden for First Nations communities looking to host future gatherings; the society will assist by developing ongoing sponsorship partnerships. Still, Adams said the TFN isn’t throwing its hat in the ring anytime soon. “Oh no, I don’t think so,” she said. “I think everyone is busy on our nation finishing our treaty, completing policies and laws.” On the subject of TFN politics, Adams has

The book signing event will take place at Black Bond Books in Ladner (5251 Ladner Trunk Rd.) July 14 from noon to 3 p.m. “For my mother, father and grandparents—they didn’t get to enjoy culture and tradition because they were part of the generation that gave up on life. I think that we will be the role models,” said Adams. The opening ceremony for the Annual Elders’ Gathering begins at 1 p.m. today. They also a Global TV. arrives at work every morning at Belzer arrive 6 a.m. and within minutes is hundreds of feet in the air doing live reports for TV and radio. “The stations we work for just think it’s invaluable to be able to go and get the information accurately,” says Belzer, a former Ladner resident and Delta Secondary alumnus who now lives in New Westminster. It’s been a busy news day so far. Earlier in the morning a derailed train was blocking Scott Road causing major congestion. And no sooner than Belzer returned to the airport, she was back up in the air to investigate reports of a tugboat sinking in the Fraser River near the Pattullo Bridge. Nothing but the facts The Leader was recently invited to go for a ride-along in the Global 1 chopper and see

how things operate. Before takeoff, pilot Kelly Sturzenegger conducts a routine safety check of the Robinson R44 four-seat helicopter emblazoned with the AM 730 logo on one side and that of Global News on the other. Once all passengers are seated with the doors closed and headsets on, Sturzenegger starts up the aircraft, awaits clearance, and gently lifts off from the tarmac. On ascent, Belzer points out the large swaths of cleared, unpaved land where the new four-lane South Fraser Perimeter Road will cross Highway 10 at 72nd Street. The chopper then flies over the Vancouver Landfill, which is circled by scavenging bald eagles, and the flat, green expanse of Burns Bog. Past the Alex Fraser Bridge, Belzer notes

‘We clear up the innacuracies because we can can actually go and see it.’ — Amber Belzer

the derailed train she reported on earlier that morning is still stuck on the tracks. She says the helicopter offers a perspective static B.C. highway cameras and Twitterhappy motorists cannot. “What’s great about what we do is we can fly directly over something,” she says, explaining she often finds herself correcting misinformation drivers have reported to the radio stations by phone. “We clear up the inaccuracies because we can actually go and see it. And because we have a camera that has an amazing zooming capacity, I can zoom right in on something and say, ‘That is a Dodge, it’s blue, and it is partially in the left lane and partially on the shoulder.’” Belzer helps drivers get where they need to go by suggesting alternate routes and report-

ing right away when an accident has been cleared. “We know we can be that much more accurate and timely and give those extra tidbits of information that drivers want,” she says. Reporting from the air means she can jump from one community to another in a matter of minutes. That speed is invaluable when breaking news happens. Last month, when a humpback whale washed ashore in White Rock, Belzer was on the scene reporting an hour-and-a-half before the Global TV ground crew arrived. Reporting on the ground Down in the Boundary Bay Airport office, ground reporter Chad Dey finishes up a live traffic update for AM 730. “In the AM 730 traffic centre I’m Chad Dey. AM 730, all traffic, all the time,” he says into the radio mic. Dey, a Ladner resident and South Delta Minor Hockey coach, starts work at 5:30 a.m. and right away begins monitoring radio reports and Twitter feeds and making phone calls to the RCMP. When it comes to traffic news, though, he says his best source of information comes from the airborne reporter. “They can see everything,” he says. “The exact damage of an accident, for instance.” The 24-year-old DSS grad started his broadcasting career in Williams Lake and found his way back to his hometown when a job opened up at The Canadian Traffic Network. “I went into broadcasting to do sports,” he says, explaining he had dreams of working for TSN or Sportsnet. While traffic reporting never crossed his mind as a career option, he says he’s enjoying his position. And in his two years on the job, he’s become an expert on Lower Mainland traffic patterns. “On a given morning I can guess what the backup on Highway 1 would be for the Port Mann Bridge,” he says, explaining the day, hour, weather conditions and major events all contribute to volume.

Dey is also trained to act as a fill-in helicopter reporter and says the view from above can be eye-opening, even for someone who has lived in the Lower Mainland most of his life. “There’s hidden gems all over the city,” he says, noting one of his favourite spots, Widgeon Lake, nestled in the North Shore Mountains. “You wouldn’t know normally that that stuff exists if you didn’t get up in the air.” An office in the sky Back in the Global 1 chopper, Sturzenegger circles around Burnaby Mountain and flies over Burrard Inlet where boats leave winding diesel trails behind them. Over Stanley Park, Belzer points to a bald patch where a major wind storm a few years back levelled parts of the forest. Admiring the chopper’s unrivalled view of downtown Vancouver, she recalls the throngs of people that filled Robson Street during the 2010 Winter Olympics. While riding in a helicopter is part of Belzer’s daily routine, it’s something she doesn’t take for granted. Her main focus is reporting on traffic conditions, but she says it’s always a treat to admire the car-free sights—from earlymorning rowers on Burnaby Lake, to West Vancouver mansions complete with swimming pools and tennis courts, to one very up-close-and-personal encounter with the North Shore Mountains en route to a breaking news story near Squamish. “We went past Grouse Mountain on the right, over the watershed, and then up and over the Lions. It was gorgeous,” she says. “Being able to see the mountains up close is really kind of a perk.” The thrill of riding in a helicopter is motivation enough to wake up and be at work for 6 a.m.—even on those pitch black winter mornings. “I look out and look down and think to myself, ‘My office is a helicopter, I am spoiled,’” she says. “Not many people get that opportunity.” reporter@southdeltaleader.com

T

he annual Tour de Delta rolled into the community's three town centres last weekend and treated cycling fans to a number of thrills over three events. In last Friday night's (July 6) MK Delta Criterium Friday—a 1.2 km loop around the Social Heart area in North Delta—Svein Tuft of Team Orica-Green Edge was the fastest in the men's competition. In the women's race, Nicky Wangsgard of Primal/MapMyRide p/b BH Bicycles topped the podi-

um. When the action switched to Ladner Village July 7 for the Brenco Criterium it was Ryan Anderson of Spider Tech who crossed the finish line first in the men's Pro Cat 1/2 race that covered 54km (60 laps). In the Women’s Pro, Cat 1/2/3 race of 36 km (40 laps) it was Stephanie Roorda of Local Ride/Dr. Vie Superfoods in first place. On Sunday, the focus switched to the Tsawwassen finish line and the White Spot Road Race. Placing first in the Pro Cat 1/2

event that stretched 140 km starting in North Delta and finishing at Winskill Park, was Steve Fisher of Hagens Berman Cycling. Meanhwile, in the women's race that covered 88 km (11 laps of Tsawwassen), Morgan Cabot of Glotman Simpson Cycling completed the course first with a time of 2:21:16. Finishing first overall from the three races on the men's side was Fisher with a total of 80 points. In the the women's overall point total, Roorda's 86 point was enough to capture the top spot.

'Slough' of opportunities Ty Yamamoto will be navigating familiar waters at the Delta Deas Rowing Club during the 2012 BC Summer Games MARIA SPITALE-LEISK REPORTER

Call it home slough advantage. North Delta teenager Ty Yamamoto will have a paddle up on the competition during the 2012 BC Summer Games rowing contest being hosted at the Delta Deas Rowing Club—one of three events being held outside the host city of Surrey. Yamamoto has been training out of this facility located in the serene waters of Deas Island Park for five years. Initially, it was a medical injury, an over-rotated right hip, that first put Yamamoto in a rowing shell. Unable to run, his doctor recommended he try the upper bodyfocused aquatic exercise. The then-11-year-old admits it was

awkward at first. A year later he was rowing competitively. But Yamamoto doesn't paint a picture of intensity with paddles vigorously splashing through the water. Instead, he labels the sport as being relaxing and peaceful in nature. Hopefully he can maintain that mindset during the BC Summer Games which starts next week. A modest Yamamoto—who sometimes practises twice a day for a total of four hours, and in all weather conditions—says it wasn't hard earning a spot on the Zone 4, five-member rowing team which encompasses Burnaby, Delta, New Westminster and Richmond. "Delta's such a non-urbanized zone. I think maybe 10 people tried out," says Yamamoto. Close to 60 rowing athletes and

coaches will converge on the Delta Deas Slough during the two-day rowing competition. There will be three events—a 1000-metre time trial, a skills event, and a 500-metre match race—in three categories— women's doubles, men's doubles and mixed quad with coxswain. Yamamoto says a minute and a half is a respectable time for the 500-metre race. But he is not too concerned with rankings. "Everyone wins, everyone loses," he says. "It comes down to a thousand of a second sometimes. It's hard to stay on top for a season." The 2012 BC Summer Games rowing competition runs July 20 - 21 at 6090 Deas Island Rd. in Delta. Organizer urges neighbours to drop in and stay a while CHRISTINE LYON REPORTER

People have often encouraged Chris Siemens to exhibit his visual art in public, but approaching galleries can be an intimidating task for an up-andcomer. So, one day last year, the former Ladner resident thought to himself, “It’d be pretty easy to just use my own house for an art show.” “I started thinking about who else could come,” said the 30-yearold, “and I realized that I had so many friends and acquaintances who I knew that were really talented.” And they were all in the same boat as him: young, passionate, with plenty of artwork and nowhere to show it. Siemens, who now lives in White Rock, decided to turn his Ladner home into a gallery and open it up to the public. The event went so well, he is planning a second installment of the show entitled “We have so much to give” this weekend. This year his friend Casey Wladichuk, manager of Culture Craze in Tsawwassen, has volunteered her Ladner driveway as exhibit space. On July 14 and 15, at 5580 44th Ave., 14 young artists—most of them in their 20s—will display and sell their work. “Basically it’s sort of just a showcase of all the people I know who are really talented,” Siemens said, explaining the event will feature visual art, as well as wood and metal jewelry, and even skimboards. He said people who drop by can expect a lowkey day of art enjoyment. And he encourages visitors to engage with the work and chat with the artists. “It’s not entertainment,” Siemens said. “Art is not TV, so just come and be ready to spend some time and enjoy ask a lot of questions.”

Metro Vancouver is Canada's most congested urban area and second only to Los Angeles in North America, according to a report. The rankings by GPS maker TomTom – based on data gleaned from the traffic movements of its subscribers – found Vancouver drivers take on average 30 per cent longer to make a trip at congested times than when roads and highways are free flowing. Los Angeles was worst among Nor th American cities – with a 33 per cent delay – while Miami, Seattle, Tampa and San Francisco ranked third through sixth at around 25 per cent. Toronto was ninth at 22 per cent. For Vancouver, TomTom estimated congestion translates into a 34-minute delay for each hour driven in peak periods, adding up to 83 hours over the course of a year for motorists with a 30-minute daily commute. But TransLink spokesman Drew Snider said the findings are deceptive. Metro Vancouver has fewer highways and therefore lower overall traffic speeds than Los Angeles, he said. That means a 10 kilometre per hour reduction in the speed of moving traffic is a bigger proportional delay here compared to U.S. cities with more freeways, giving Vancouver a worse ranking. "We made the choice not to punch freeways through the centre of Vancouver and that's made the region more livable," Snider said. He said TransLink is working to expand transit—as well as cycling and pedestrian infrastructure—to offer alternatives to car use in more of the region.

Everything in life starts with a look, generally followed closely by a feeling invoked by what we just looked at. We are emotional creatures and extremely visual. This one reason alone is why you need to hire a professional interior designer/decorator consultant to help you sell your home. It starts at the curb – make sure you ’have’ your prospective buyers as they drive up: beautiful flowers, shrubs placed properly on the porch, a freshlymowed lawn and a new coat of paint adds so much to the value of your home. Decluttering common areas of your home – foyers, kitchen counters and bathrooms – is also key when it comes to making a good first impression. Think airy and spacious. A nice picture, a mirror or even a small table or chair can be used for staging your home. And make sure your house smells inviting – without using artificial room sprays. Natural is better. Choose fresh flowers or warming spice on the stove in winter. In keeping with the natural theme, choose neutral interior paint colours instead of strong, bold colours which can be off-putting. Home staging can lead to a quick sale, when left to the eyes of a professional interior decorator. Let The Blue Door Interiors help you decide what your budget dictates: a cheap and cheerful update, a middle of the road do-over – or whatever it takes Notary Public to get the job done. ‘This is really something out of the ordinary’

Solo David has views and architecture all in one by Kerry Vital

Standing on your front steps outside Solo David by Mosaic Homes, you see the Lower Mainland stretching before you. Situated in a fantastic location on Coquitlam’s Burke Mountain, the views are simply out of this world. “Architecture, views, value: it’s all there,” says Mosaic’s Brandon Trent. “This is really something out of the ordinary.” He’s not exaggerating. With large windows and Solo David’s northsouth facing location, you’ll be able to see beauty from every angle. Built in a classic Tudor style, with recessed entries, oversized eight-foot doors, wood trim and a stucco finish, the exteriors themselves are almost like works of art. Each home is three storeys. Two-car garages are at the rear with a walk-out entrance to the main floor and a fenced backyard.

“

These homes won’t last,” says Mosaic’s Brandon Trent. “They’re exclusive and unique to the mountainside.”

With only 16 three-storey homes in the project, ranging from 3,516 to 3,522 square feet, Solo David is an exclusive community that is perfect for families of all sizes. With the ability to add a suite or an extra bedroom, it’s easy to make your home fit your lifestyle. “It’s really flexible for families,” Trent says. Inside, the homes are modern and contemporary, with laminate flooring and an open-plan layout. Buyers are able to choose between a threeand four-bedroom configuration, depending on your needs. The lower level offers plenty of options for customization, whether you want to build a mortgage helper, a large entertainment space or a home office. The possibilities are endless, Trent says. Heading up the stairs, the main living area opens before you. With nine-foot ceilings, the sense of space is incredible. The kitchen is huge, with tons of storage space and elegant quartz countertops. “This is a massive dining room,” says Trent. The show home features a table set for eight, but you could fit at least 10 people in the space. Beside it, the living area is complemented by the large bay window and a flex space that can be used as a library or extra living space. Upstairs, the master bedroom is the

epitome of comfort, with its walkin closet and coffered ceilings that continue in the ensuite bathroom. “This is a stunning bedroom,” Trent says. “There’s just nothing like it.” One of the fabulous features here is the large window seat that affords you yet another beautiful view. Those views will never disappear, Trent says, since Mosaic will also be building Riley, a collection of Tudor rowhomes which complements the streetscape and does not impede the scenery. The other bedrooms on the upper floor are spacious and inviting. A flex space is featured up here as well, so you can decide to close it off to make a fourth bedroom, or leave it open to use as a playroom or office space. The grand opening will take place on Saturday, July 14 at noon, and Mosaic is expecting a great turnout. “These homes won’t last,” says Trent. “They’re exclusive and unique to the mountainside.” Homes start at $699,900. Spartans sign Ladner netminder take abre Former North Delta Devils goalie to suit up for Trinity Western University in Langley Trinity Western men’s hockey coach Dwayne Lowdermilk announced the Langley university's first signing for the 2012-13 season as Ladner's Harry Fredeman committed to guard the Spartans' net recently. The six-foot-one inch, 182-pound Fredeman, who played in the PIJHL All-Star game this past season, had a standout 2011-12 campaign with the North Delta Devils, leading all goaltenders with 20 wins while registering a 2.82 goals against average (third in the PIJHL) and a .915 save percentage (sixth). His best work came in the first round of the playoffs when the 20-year-old, averaging 40 saves per game and posting a .933 save percentage, helped the Devils push the eventual PIJHL champion Delta Ice Hawks to a Game seven, before ultimately losing the deciding game. In the first three games of the series alone, Fredeman allowed just six goals on 146 shots and was named the first star in Games one and two and the second star in Game thee. “I was able to scout Harry through the second half of the season and follow him through his outstanding play in the PIJHL playoffs, Lowdermilk said. “He faced an incredible amount of shots from the Ice Hawks and kept his team in the series. goalie in the PIJHL, Harry has the skill, dedication and work ethic to step right in to our league and play. Harry practiced with our team this past spring, so he should feel right at home this fall. In four seasons playing in the PIJHL, Fredeman played with three different teams—along with North Delta, he also suited up for Mission, for 39 games, and Squamish, for six games—for a total of 76 games.

Fredeman also had a stint at the Junior “A level with the Trenton Golden Hawks of the OJHL (Ontario Junior Hockey League). “Trinity Western has a great reputation and I have heard a lot of positive things about their business program in particular, Fredeman said. “I'm very excited to begin the next stage of my hockey career as I've heard nothing but good things about the BCIHL."

Google SUNDOG GUITAR INSTRUCTION

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William Richard (Rick) Metz in Delta, B.C. on June 8th, 2012. He is survived by his son Michael Metz, his father William Metz, his brother Gary Metz (Donna), his sisters Cheryl and Joanne Metz, as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Rick was predeceased by his mother Stella Metz and his sister Wendy Chilibeck. Rick was a loving, giving person who believed strongly in family values. He had a great love of music and a passion for drumming. (and he was instrumental in introducing drumming to several young people in his life). Rick worked for many years at Lehigh Cement and its predecessors where he met many of his closest friends. Rick was highly respected for his work ethic and his fun loving nature. Rick will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. As requested by Rick, there will not be a service. There will be a gathering of immediate family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Delta Hospice Society or The Cancer Society.
