The 13th annual Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition kicks off on Parksville Bay today, with the main competition running through the weekend and the exhibition running right through until August 19. The work We want to inspire new sculptors and this is a fun can be viewed way to learn until 2 p.m. CHERYL DILL S a t u r d a y, when the gates open for a close-up view of the detail work the sand artists will be doing. PARKSVILLE — In our Tuesday issue we incorrectly called the newly-renamed restaurant at the Rod and Gun as Bistro 1869. In fact, that should have read Bistro 1898. It should be noted that the name for the popular eatery isn’t the only thing that’s changed. The menu has also been similarly revamped. Bistro 1898 in Parksville — it’s well worth

Garbage can holes are back to normal QUALICUM BEACH — Town staff this week moved quickly to deal with a growing problem with garbage being piled beside municipal garbage cans. The problem arose because of a decision to limit the size of the opening in the cans, in order to discourage the practice by some area residents of disposing of their household garbage in them. However, the holes were found to be too small by many frustrated users, who instead just left their trash beside them on the ground. Council agreed to revert to the original openings and by the next morning they had all been restored to their former dimensions.

Feature LIVES LIVED

A different side of Borgnine Bud Wilkie took an eye popping cruise with the legendary Hollywood star and learned a great deal about his life AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com

W

ith the passing of a true Hollywood giant, local resident Herbert “Bud” Wilkie took a moment to remember a different side of Hollywood legend Ernest Borgnine. Wilkie met the star at the height of his fame as they sailed to Australia together on the S.S. Monterey in late 1958. Borgnine, who had already been in From Here to Eternity, and recently won an Oscar for the film Marty, beating no less than Frank Sinatra, James Cagney, Spencer Tracy and the recently deceased James Dean. “Ernest was the life of the party on the boat, he was a lot of fun,” Wilkie said, taking centre stage in the outrageous ceremony held while crossing the equator and generally spending a lot of time hanging out and making friends with the other passengers. Ernest was the life of the He was party on the boat, he was a on his way to lot of fun make a movHERBERT “BUD” WILKIE ie version of the Australian play Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, which was also released in the United States with a new name, Season of Passion. Though already one of the biggest American stars, the unconventional leading man was still in the early stage of his six-decade career, a few years from becoming one of the biggest TV stars of the 1960s as Quinton McHale in McHale’s Navy. Young Herbert Wilkie was similarly early in his career, on his way to work for a Sydney company that sent secretary Marjorie Thomson to pick him up at the dock. As it turned out, Herbert and Marjorie hit it off in a big way.

Hollywood legend Ernest Borgnine (in hat) proved to be an entertaining addition to a memorable 1958 ocean crossing for Herbert Wilkie (third from left).

When they got married a month later, Wilkie invited Borgnine to be his best man, but the star politely declined the opportunity, saying he was too busy filming. Borgnine, who had served 10 years in the U.S. navy, earned a great many decorations, including the Second World War Victory Medal. Borgnine practically started at the top, winning the Oscar for one of his early leading roles, then going on to dozens of big films including The Wild Bunch, Flight of the Phoenix, The Dirty Dozen, The Poseidon Adventure and Escape from New York.

However, he is best known to later generations for television roles in shows like Airwolf, The Love Boat, Magnum, P.I., Murder, She Wrote and a reoccurring role as the voice of Mermaid Man on the wildly popular animated series, Spongebob Squarepants. Within the last five years he became one of the oldest people ever to win an Emmy and Golden Globe, both for TV appearances. Borgnine died on July 8, 2012 at the age of 95. Herbert and Marjorie Wilkie are still happily married and are living in Parksville.

Lock your doors for thief season

They’ve said it before and they’ll say it again: if you don’t want to lose your valuables, don’t leave them as thief bait in the back of your unattended car. That was the message being put out to the community this week by RCMP Corporal Jesse Foreman as he once again reiterated his message about crime prevention. “Despite the messaging from Citizens on Patrol and the Oceanside RCMP there continues to be smash and grabs

from vehicles in the Oceanside area,” he said. “A recent rash of vehicle entries should remind us all that thieves are not hesitating to smash out a car window if they see wallets, sunglasses, Ipods or loose change.” Rather than leaving them visible to tempt those with a bent for taking other people’s belongings, Foreman urged drivers to make the interior of their vehicle at least appear to be poor pickings.

“Please take your valuables with you and don’t leave any offering or incentive to those individuals without respect for your property,” he said. Foreman noted that police will be out in force over the course of the upcoming summer sandcastle celebrations, with extra shifts readied for police bike, foot and car patrols at various troublesome hot spots in the area. — Neil Horner

District gives more time for Morello cleanup Some directors unsure of why original cleanup order was imposed on Nanoose Bay couple in the first place NEIL HORNER

news@pqbnews.com

The Regional District of Nanaimo this week gave an extension to a Nanoose Bay couple to clean up their property after acknowledging they’ve mostly taken care of the problem. Despite the break however, Ann Barber ended the evening close to tears. Her five-acre property on Morello Road had been cited as unsightly after the RDN received a complaint about the machinery and other items stored there by husband Wayne. At Tuesday’s meeting, Barber made a plea to directors to withdraw their cleanup order, noting that while she had been cited for keeping derelict machinery, NEIL HORNER PHOTO none of it was, in fact derelict at all. Commenting on the presentation,

Area F alternate director Leann Salter read a statement from director Julian Fell, which called on the RDN to rescind the cleanup order. “The word ‘derelict’ means wrecked and abandoned,” she said. “In this case, the items are not abandoned. They are awaiting restoration and they have a useful purpose. This is a hobby that is constructive.” She called the order legally suspect and said the unsightliness of the property — which is heavily treed around the perimeter – is very subjective. “Punishing someone for a matter of opinion is like punishing them for their religion,” she read. “This is beyond the legal application and intent of the law.” Salter and Fell were not alone. City of Nanaimo director Jim Kipp also waded in to the defence of the beleaguered couple. “The pictures didn’t seem to be what I consider a serious breach,” he said. “I could show you pictures from Nanaimo that would make your skin crawl. It seems subjective. It didn’t look like the property was out of order. It’s rural. Where are we going with the cleanup of Vancouver Island?” Board manager Paul Thorkelson said staff attended the site earlier on Tuesday and found that a great deal of work had been done. Celliant® has been proven in clinical tests to reduce pain, increase oxygen levels, and help balance body temperature. Each of these results can have added benefits including faster healing, increased performance, better quality sleep, and improved overall wellness, all of which can help alleviate the symptoms of arthritis and peripheral vascular diabetes often associated with diabetes. The key to Celliant® lies in it’s ability to absorb and store the electromagnetic (energy) emissions from the human body and release them where they are re-absorbed into the skin and deep muscle tissue. In the deep muscle tissue they act as catalysts for natural, biological processes resulting in enhanced oxygen levels and more balanced body temperature during sleep, rest or physical activity.

When the province appoints a seniors advocate some time this fall, he or she will have a great deal of work to do, although, says Ron Cantelon, that work remains to be defined. That was good news, but not good enough for Barber, who said that because the bylaw officer wouldn’t define exactly what needed to be done at the site, she and her husband are still faced with the prospect of having to send all his machinery to the scrap yard.

With his latest fundraiser packed with a standing room only crowd, NDP hopeful Barry Avis is feeling cautiously optimistic about his election chances next May. The Friday night hootenanny, held at the Qualicum Beach Community Hall, featured folk music legend Bob Bossin, along with seven other performers, all singing their hearts out for their favoured candidate. “My take is that I’m getting tremendous support,” Avis said. “People are saying it’s time for a change. When they talk about seniors, health care, the environment, people are realizing it’s way past time that we did something about these issues.” Avis stressed however that nothing can be taken for granted and he has so far knocked on over 1,200 doors in the riding.

Lots going on out on the water • Fans of fun in the sun in Qualicum Beach will see a familiar face this year as once again Stephen Mitchell staffs the Outsider beachfront kayak rental outlet. Mitchell, who once owned and operated Oceanside Kayaks from the same site, will be offering mostly sit-upon vessels this year, although he does have a couple of single kayaks for those with an adventurous bent. He will also have items such as sunscreen, masks and snorkels and other beach necessities on hand. • Maritime history buffs won’t want to miss the Campbell River Museum’s historic boat tour around Sonora Island on Saturday. The island was named after a Spanish exploring vessel, the Sonora, which sailed out of San Blas, Mexico in 1775, bound for the Northwest Coat. The expedition was plagued by difficulties. According to reports from owners and boaters moored in neighbouring berths, police believe the boats were broken into between 11 p.m. on July 4 and 3 a.m. on July 5. There was no damage done to the boats and the thief entered the vessels through unlocked doors and hatch covers. Owners reported that they felt the boats were secure because the dock gate, the only access point from land, was locked. The culprit stole food, alcohol, dvds, cell phones and a television.

nn Barber and her husband Wayne are facing an order to clean up their property after a complaint was received from one of their neighbours about it being unsightly. While that may have been the case at one point after the couple brought home debris from a rental property that was trashed by the former tenants, it is certainly not the case now. Machinery stored at the site is not only functional and needed by the couple, but it’s virtually invisible unless you actually walk down the driveway and pop by for a visit. After staff acknowledged the couple has completed a great deal of cleanup at the site, directors — some of whom seemed genuinely embarrassed by the whole situation — voted to give them another 90 days to complete the cleanup. That’s a good step, but it doesn’t go nearly far enough. Since the original cleanup order can’t be rescinded, what is clearly needed here is an assessment that yes, the property is fine and the case is closed. The couple has been poorly treated, with one staffer even having the gall to ask them why they needed to own two boats. There is a very good reason why the RDN has an unsightly premises bylaw, as there is no shortage of sloppy, lazy and slovenly people in this world. However, we would suggest the Barbers do not fit into this category and they should be left alone to enjoy their hobby, sell their eggs from the refrigerator the RDN wants them to get rid of, and live their lives in rural peace. On a positive note, this situation could well be viewed as a good opportunity for regional district officials to take a good, hard look at the unsightly premises bylaw and see if there might be some tweaks that could be instituted to make this sort of unfortunate incident less likely to take place in future. — Editorial by Neil Horner

QUOTABLE:

Letters WE OWE THEM THAT It is refreshing to read a recent editorial offering practical insight on how to sustain the economy of Qualicum Beach. It’s true – to support our community, we should be prepared to shop locally. But it would be a better idea to have a full discussion and hopefully some agreement on what a future healthy economy might actually look like. I suspect many would deďŹ ne it as the ongoing acquisition of more and more material goods, luxury items, bigger houses, and an ongoing increase in our standard of living. The problem is all the signs globally, nationally, and locally point away from this as an attainable and sustainable goal. The long consumer party based on resource extraction, real estate development, and third world exploitation is over. Our children will never be able to replicate our lifestyle. Economists everywhere agree. The focus now must be on creating a desirable quality of life, not an unachievable quantity of life. In order to achieve this, we could start with a community dialogue addressing several key topics such as how many existing businesses, (the development of real estate sub-divisions for example) belong to an outmoded set of expectations? What new businesses based on stability and service, not growth, should we be developing?

“It’s clear there has been signiďŹ cant progress on the property.â€? PAUL THORKELSON, see story page A8

ALMANAC Government Contacts PROVINCIAL:

How can we encourage energy and food self-sufďŹ ciency? Above all, each of us can ask ourselves “how much do I have, and, what do I really need?â€? The reality is everything in the future must get smaller, not bigger, especially our appetites for land, food, energy, cars, and toys. I suggest we start focusing on education, health and constructive town planning, so all the young people around us will have some cause for hope. Whether we like it or not, we have to change. I suggest we begin talking as soon as possible about the future economy, rather than spend our time searching for band aids for a dying 20th century economy. Don’t we owe them this? ANDREW BROWN Qualicum Beach

CHANGE IS COMING If any resident of Qualicum Beach is still expecting the town to retain its current small , attractive , unique appearance the proposals placed before council should set them straight. The Village Neighbourhood Planning Project presented to the July 9 council meeting made it quite clear that the gang of three will push their agenda regardless of majority town opinion . Up for change are unrestricted building heights and elimination of development cost charges. The former, over time, would

see the character of our town reduced to that of the typical North American urban eyesore. Councillor Luchtmeijer thinks there is too much regulation placed on what is built so watch out for some wild ideas. The latter, championed by councillor Willie, would be a nice gift developers. Development cost charges that support the town’s infrastructure are part of the cost of adding more structures and should remain part of the purchase price, not added to general taxation. THE WRONG TOWN? It is surprising that a man who sought a governing position in this town says “town control scares me.â€? He states that the private sector should be allowed to do what it does best. What the private sector does best is to serve itself. That is not a bad thing, but it needs to be tempered, balanced. That seems to me to be the very essence of government, to create rules whereby we can all serve ourselves up to the point where it no longer serves the greater good. If we ďŹ nd we are in the job of tempering and balancing, and we are shocked to be in that position of control, maybe we are in the wrong job, or perhaps the wrong town. WHEELS OFF THE BUS

I just want to caution the citizens of Qualicum Beach as to the direction we appear to be taking our community. I have connected the dots and I believe our commercial core is at real risk of collapse. Two established businesses relocated away from Qualicum Beach’s core last month and two left the month before that. There are now nearly two dozen vacant commercial sites in our little core. This has me very worried and I started to wonder if this was due to the general economy or was it a result of something more specific or inherent to this community. As an inquisitive person I decided to analyze the 2006 and 2011 Stats Can Census’ Snap shot: We gained 11 new babies aged 0 to 4 in 2011, but lost 220 children, ages five to 19. Correspondingly we lost 265 adults aged 35 to 54 (Parents). In the 65 to 85 plus age category we gained 610 inhabitants. I know from personal experience (also supported by data on the Stats Can web site) that consumer spending expenditures diminish dramatically as one ages. Decreasing consumer expenditures is clearly at work here. Falling sales/business is not because our merchants do not understand how to market properly to the elderly, it’s simply that a household of two occupants aged 65 years of age and plus, spend half that of the average B.C. household. This is a trend that needs to be properly assessed. And finally, let’s look at the elephant in the room that no one wants to discuss and what will likely be our commercial core’s kiss of

death: Wembley Mall’s large format box store development. So when town planner Luke Sales clearly articulated at the last council meeting why smart, sustainable growth in the downtown core is critical in supporting a vibrant local economy, creating diverse housing options and providing a green and responsible strategy in protecting our planet from climate change, I was relieved that someone at senior staff level understood the real issues and had the guts to speak up. Unfortunately the message was lost on many of the attendees who heard it. I sense most elderly people still feel any change to the core is still inherently a bad thing since it means strategic change; whereas, residual change resulting from poor or no decision making seems perfectly acceptable. We are at real risk of losing both our high school and downtown core. My hat is off to those councillors who have also seen the red flags and who also don’t want this community to lose its specialness. If a modest amount of controlled growth in the downtown core in the form of attractive buildings on the empty or derelict sites can support a stronger local economy and provide more market rental housing for those who need or want to relocate to the core but cannot or do not wish to buy, then I wonder how this could be construed as dangerous policy. These future projects will be revenue positive for the town, despite some of the relaxations the town is discussing. DEAN DREGER Qualicum Beach

Proving once again that “Life is in the Details” this indomitable group of effervescent socialites stepped back into the 60’s this time, inspired by today’s popular TV series, Mad Men. November 6, 1927 – July 9, 2012

Passed away after a long struggle with poor health. She was a devoted wife of Abe for 65 years, mother to Joan (Richard Hicks) and Cliff (Susan), grandmother of four, and greatgrandmother of eleven children. All survive her. Hilda is predeceased by her parents, brother Peter and sisters Aliena, Velma and Mary. She is survived by her sister Betty and brother Rudy. She will be sadly missed by all who loved her. She was a gifted hostess and loved knitting and sewing. We all have a quilt that she made especially for us, to remember her by. Hilda was a woman of deep faith – at the end, she said her greatest joy in life was, knowing that all her children and grandchildren loved the Lord and she would spend eternity with them. She cared deeply for her family and friends, always treating others with kindness and respect. She inspired others as she faced life’s challenges with courage, strength and integrity. Hilda made many friends in her lifetime and shared many wonderful times with those close to her. She was a member of the congregation at the Parksville Baptist Church. Her ardent and unwavering faith brought comfort to her throughout her lengthy illness, as did the support and prayers of her friends and family. Join us for a Celebration of her life on Monday, July 16, 2012 at the Parksville Baptist Church, 550 Pym Street, Parksville, BC at 2:00pm. Flowers are gratefully declined. Hole lotta golfing — for a good cause

Royals split weekend BY JAMES CLARKE sports@pqbnews.com

Parksville’s Quality Foods Royals dug deep and salvaged an important split against the Victoria Mariners Wednesday night. At home for a rare BCPBL mid-week double header, the Royals were blanked 7-0 in game one, but regrouped for a 7-4 win in game two. The Royals were out-hit 8-2 in game one — game-time temperature was a toasty 24C — and turned in three errors and the M’s none. It was a different story in game two as the Q-crew out hit the visitors 7-5, playing error-free ball to the Mariner’s three. “That was a very important split,” Royals’ skipper Dave Wallace confirmed after the dust had settled, pointing out the Mariners, who are already in the playoffs at 25-12, “are well-secured in the top four, so it was like a bonus win for us.” The split puts the Royals at 10-26 on the season and lifts them out of last place in the 13team league ahead of White Rock. Making the playoffs said Wallace “is still going to be a daunting task, but getting a win there yesterday (Wednesday) really helps our cause in many perspectives. Not only standings, but it shows we can compete against the top teams in the league, so it’s good for the confidence. We’ve competed against those top teams all year but just haven’t had the success,” surmised the veteran skipper. Case in point — three of their four losses to the second place Nanaimo Pirates (who at 30-8 are a half game back of the Langley Blaze for first) were by one run, and one of those in extra innings. And it’s a similar story line against the third place 28-12 Okanagan Athletics. In Wednesday’s win, Calvin Sandhu struggled a bit early but regrouped and pitched five solid innings to pick up the win on the hill — Blake Heemskerk and Keller Anderson threw an inning each to nail down the W. Heemskerk, a Gr. 11 from Campbell River and one of many players in the lineup making the jump from the Jr. Royals, was solid on the hill in relief and also hammered a two-run homer, his first of the season, in the bottom of the second inning to spot his team the early lead. “It was a well-hit ball that’s for sure,” Wallace said of the line-drive over left centre field, adding “we were far more competitive in the second game.” See ROYALS page A26

BY JAMES CLARKE sports@pqbnews.com

From the links comes word that on July 17 Fairwinds Golf Club pro Brett Standerwick will golf as many holes as possible to raise awareness and funds for ALS. Fairwinds is one of 40 golf courses located across B.C. participating in the PGA of B.C. Golfathon for ALS presented by uniPHARM and the Medicine Centre Pharmacies Charitable Foundation. Golf pros will golf from sunrise to sunset, non-stop, to raise funds and awareness for ALS. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS ), also referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder that affects the person’s motor neurons that carry messages to the muscles resulting in weakness and wasting in arms, legs, mouth, throat and elsewhere; typically the person is immobilized or deceased within two to five years of the initial diagnosis. ALS can happen to anyone at anytime. This is the fifth year Standerwick has stepped up to help the cause. Last year he did something a little different and raised about $2,000 when he climbed the Golden Hinde, the tallest mountain on Vancouver Island located in Strathcona Park. “It was three days up and two days down,” he said, explaining how in keeping with the PGA connection he took his golf club with him and hit some biodegradable wooden donor ball off the top of Philips Ridge. The year before (2010) that he played 156 holes at Fairwinds (8.5 rounds) and raised around $1,500. “I’m going to try to better that this year — my goal is 10 rounds or 180 holes,” he said easily, adding the big day “is always fun, but it’s a challenge for sure — you have to mentally wrap your head around the day, but it’s something I definitely support. Tee off time is sunrise (around 6 a.m.). Anyone interested in sponsoring Brett can contact the Fairwinds golf shop at 250-468-7666.

The Parksville Royals salvaged an important split in BCPBL action against the Victoria Mariners on Wednesday. Above, second baseman Sam Visona gets a handle on a hard hit ball. Right, Blake Heemskerk also had a good game as he pitched a solid inning in relief and hammered a tworun homer.

AA Mosquito Reds have huge weekend as they go for Island championships BY JAMES CLARKE sports@pqbnews.com

Oceanside’s AA Mosquito Reds sure had the bats working hard last weekend, as they went 3-1 and outscored the opposition by a whopping 60-34 in rep ball action. At home on Saturday for a double header against the AAA Ladysmtih Cardinals, the Reds came up on the short end of a 17-11 final in game one, then bounced back with a big 24-9 romp in game two. According to head coach Andy Macdonald, Ryan Palm and Brandon Nicoll, who crushed a two-run homer over left center, led the Reds at the plate, while Brandon Snyder, Jaxon Ackerman and Nolan Macdonald all turned in strong pitching performances. Brandon was on the mound in the fifth inning and showed lightning quick reflexes and good hands when he stretched out for a diving catch on a shallow popup with runners on base to obtain the third out. “That was so awe-

ble header on Sunday, the Reds swept the hometown Cannons by scores of 13-11 and 6-3. It was, said Andy, “A great effort from the entire team,” adding that highlights from

Ladysmith included Brandon Nicoll’s game one blast over the left field fence and Jaxon Ackerman’s no hitter through the five full innings he pitched. The three wins ups the Reds’ record to

GAME ON The Reds are back home this weekend in double headers against the Comox Valley Cardinals on Saturday and against the Cannons on Sunday.

Local volleyball players off to BC Games Ballenas Secondary seniors Alex Cloutier and Jenna Pearce are off to Surrey next week BY JAMES CLARKE sports@pqbnews.com

Vancouver Island’s BC Summer Games U17 girls beach volleyball team was busy getting in some reps under a hot summer sun down at Parksville Community Park this week, and a couple of locals were in their element. Making the Zone 6 team are Parksville standouts Jenna Pearce and Alex Cloutier. “It’s going good,” Jenna surmised easily on the sand courts when The News stopped by. “It’s been a lot of hard work, a lot of training of late, but we’re enjoying it,” Cloutier added with a smile. Both girls are heading into their senior year at Ballenas Secondary School. This provinces best young athletes will converge on Surrey, July 19-22 for the 2012 BC Summer Games.

Defensively, Rob Vlaj continued his stellar play in centre field, making a number of nice catches Wednesday including two in game one where he had to get on his horse to track down the ball. “He’s been playing great out there,” Wallace confirmed, pointing out “since we moved him to centre (from right field) two weeks ago he’s really solidified our outfield. “We’ve got 12 games left,” Wallace said. “Mathematically we could finish as high as sixth, but realistically we’re battling for that eighth and final spot, which is good, it gives the last 12 games some meaning and intensity which is what you want. If we are going to make the playoffs we’re going to need all 15 guys contributing, and that’s what happened in that second game yesterday — the whole team had a hand in that win.” NEXT UP The Royals kick off a six-game road stretch this weekend with double headers on the Mainland against the first place Langley Blaze on Saturday (Clayton Isherwood gets the start in game one for the Royals) and the Whalley Chiefs, who are one game up on Parksville, on Sunday. The pinstripes return to Van next Wednesday for a two game set against the Vancouver Cannons, then return home for their final home stand of the season July 21-22 when they host the Blue Jays and the Cannons.

DIAMOND BITS Asked why he wouldn’t start his ace Isherwood against the 12-25 Chiefs on Sunday and hedge his bet for the W, Wallace said “it doesn’t make any sense to let him beat up on the Chiefs... I always believe in throwing our best against the best — Clayton needs to be challenged too.”

ARTS& LIFE

BRENDA GOUGH PHOTO

Bard to Broadway’s cast of Hello Dolly on stage at the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach get a standing ovation on opening night July 9.

Hello Dolly spot on in Qualicum Beach BRENDA GOUGH

reporter@pqbnews.com

Bard to Broadway’s Hello Dolly, now on stage at the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach drew a full crowd on opening night and for fans of classic Broadway musicals it provided a satisfying piece of nostalgia. The feel good show has superb music and is brought to life by an excellent cast of singers, dancers and comic actors, expertly directed by Gary Brown. Hello Dolly has become one of the most enduring musical theatre hits enjoying three Broadway revivals and international success since it was first produced in 1964. The musical takes the audience on a whirlwind race around New York at the turn of the 20th century, as they follow the adventures of America’s most beloved matchmaker. The story is about Dolly Levi’s efforts to marry Horace Vandergelder, the wellknown half-a-millionaire, and send his money circulating among the people like rainwater the way her late husband, Ephraim Levi, taught her. Along the way Dolly also succeeds in matching up the By Brenda Gough young and beautiful Widow Molloy with Vandergelder’s head clerk, Cornelius Hackl; Cornelius’ assistant, Barnaby Tucker, with Mrs. Molloy’s assistant, Minnie Fay; and the struggling artist, Ambrose Kemper, with Mr. Vandergelder’s weeping niece, Ermengarde. “And what do you do for a living, Mrs. Levi?” asks Ambrose Kemper in the first scene of the musical comedy. “Some people paint, some sew...I meddle,” replies Dolly.

REVIEW

The plot is set in motion when Yonkers feed store clerk Cornelius celebrates his promotion by taking his pal Barnaby to New York City for a good time. But Cornelius and Barnaby can’t avoid crossing paths with their boss Mr. Vandergelder who’d hit the roof if he saw them in a fancy restaurant with two fancy girls instead of tending to the store. Vandergelder himself is the object of Dolly’s affections, though she pretends to have only a professional interest in the widowed merchant, going through the motions of finding him a new wife when in fact she’d like to be the lucky bride herself. Amy Mikkelborg exudes charm in the leading role as Dolly Gallagher Levi. Her energy is infectious, her personality endearing and her vocal talents evident. Her portrayal of a matchmaker, marriage broker, meddler and New York celebrated merry widow who is out to capture the penny-pinching Vandergelder for herself was solid. Mikkelborg’s rapid fire dialogue had the audience in stitches from the moment she hit the stage. As business cards flew endlessly from her tapestry bag Mikkelborg embraced Dolly’s feisty spirit with gusto. Mikkelborg’s shrewdly mischievous performance is complimented by some great supporting actors. As the hapless store clerks who venture to the big city, David Mathews as Cornelius and Nicholas Atkinson as Barnaby are terrific and the pair bring some great physicality to their roles. In an inspired piece of casting by Brown, the goofy duo deliver some quirky comedy and have great chemistry together. See BARD, page B2

Bard to Broadway’s Hello Dolly cast delightful and moving CONTINUED FROM PAGE B1

A remarkable singer, dancer and comic actor as one of Vandergelder’s overworked, underpaid employees, Mathew’s role as Cornelius allows him to sing fun comedy numbers, but also provide a more moving performance in the romantic number It Only Takes a Moment. Atkinson is an able companion as Cornelius’s sidekick Barnaby. His buffoonery, singing and dancing are refreshing and he brings sincerity and charm to his role as an oppressed clerk loose on the town. Besides her talent and youthful verve, Emily Blake sparkles on stage in the role of Minnie Fay. Her bright smile and lively step are captivating and she delivers an energetic and charismatic performance in several

of the ensemble and couples numbers. Morgana Clarkson as Irene Molloy the milliner who ultimately finds happiness when she realizes money isn’t everything sang a heartfelt Ribbons Down My Back. The delightful act two opener in which the four perform Elegance was terrific. There is a great scene where the two country bumpkins try to impress the two New York City ladies with what little money they’ve earned and all are tired from walking all day in an effort to be viewed as elegant. Brian Lecky comedically portrays the single, wealthy and rather unlikeable Horace Vandergelder with confidence. He is particularly hilarious at Harmonia Gardens in Act Two where there is a fine blend of comical plot developments

with quick turns by dancing waiters. Resplendent in scarlet gown embroidered with jewels and a feathered headdress Dolly sings the rousing title song with zest and leads a male chorus of waiters and chefs in a joyous promenade around the restaurant. The show’s climax has a chaotic fun scene where wallets are switched, polka partners are spun and arrests are made. The chorus both danced and sang well under the guidance of vocal director Hilary Whelton and choreographer Donna Wilkins. The timeless musical is full of memorable songs and the zing of the production numbers got an energetic boost from the orchestra, led by music director Barry Miller.

The set is gorgeous as are the magnificent costumes with feathered hats, and sweeping feminine skirts. Along with the zesty choreography the production is beautifully staged and nicely directed with a spot on blending of the lead performances. A must see show of B2B’s summer repertory theatre Hello Dolly received a thunderous standing ovation at curtain call. For those who enjoy recognizing almost every song in a musical and having a great laugh while doing it, this is the show for you, but you better get your tickets fast. The Island Quad Team from Victoria is one of the feature acts at this year’s Kitefest.

Kitefest set to impress Teddy bear drop expected to attract many young kids as usual LISSA ALEXANDER

reporter@pqbnews.com

Parksville’s skies will be speckled with colour next weekend, as Kitefest returns to the Parksville Community Park July 21 and 22. Ray Bethall, dubbed The World’s Kite Champion will be returning to put on a show, and Parksville Lions Club member and organizer Clarence Esslinger said it’s plain to see how he got the name. “He can fly seven kites at a time, that’s why he’s the champ,” he said. Esslinger explained that Bethall is in his 70s and deaf and known around the world for his kite flying abilities. He can tell by the wind when to do different stunts, he said, and wanted to return to Parksville this year to put on a good show, as last year the winds weren’t ideal. Other features include the Island Quad Team from Victoria, who fly kites in unison to music, and Monster Kite flyer John Vriend. For the kids there’s always plenty to do, and the Teddy bear drop is always a big hit. This is where kids 10 and under put their name into a draw for the chance to chase down a parachut-

ing Teddy bear. Shaw supplies the 40 bears that are hoisted up 90 feet by the Parksville Fire Department. “It’s quite an attraction having these little kids run after these Teddy bears and try and catch them before they land on the ground,” Esslinger said. Kids can participating in kite making as well, and put their own creative stamp on their work. There will be plenty of craft and food vendors again this year as well as ground displays. The event is presented by the Parksville Lion’s Club and the British Columbia Kitefliers Association (BCKA). Esslinger said there will be kite fliers coming from Washington State, Oregon, Alberta, the Mainland and Vancouver Island to fly on our popular field. “We have one of the best kite flying fields on the Island,” he said. “There's a nice grass field, prevailing winds off the ocean and no trees to interfere.” The event takes place Sat., July 21 and Sun, July 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, with the Teddy bear drop happening at noon both days.

Beachfest to entertain LISSA ALEXANDER

reporter@pqbnews.com

Free entertainment will be going non-stop in Parksville for the next five weeks as the Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition (Beachfest) kicks off this weekend. In prior years organizers have tried running the entertainment over the weekends, and then last year one “Big Splash” weekend, but this year they have decided to have an act every day starting this Sunday. Entertainers will also be closer to the sand sculptures this year and play either in the gazebo or on the grass in front of it. “It’s nice when you’re in the sand sculpting event—in the exhibition—to be able to walk around and hear some music and feel the festive flavour of our festival,” said Trish Smith, event manager of Beachfest. Smith said there is a great amount of variety this year from musicians and singers to a circus performer and Parksville artist MONK, who will lead community painting and lessons. There will be ukulele lessons on Friday nights and Yoga on the beach Sunday mornings among many other things.

Jayden Holman is slated as the festival’s first performer this year, Sunday, July 15 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and Smith said he’s a rising star. “I swear he’s going to be the next Justin Bieber,” she said about the 16-year-old singer from Nanaimo. A couple days to mark on the summer calendar this festival include a fun-filled kids day August 4 and an ’80s beach party, August 11. August 4 kids can dodge stilt-walking or juggling pirates to find treasures with their maps and keep the goodies they find. That evening a light show with fire spinning, juggling and acrobatics will take place. The theme of the event this year is ’80s as this year marks 30 years of sand sculpting in the area. The party starts when aerial acrobatics jump from a plane and land on the dance floor (the volleyball court). Everyone is encouraged to dress in ‘80s attire and come and boogie to the retro tunes. There will be a celebrity look-a-like contest and prizes to be won. Check out the Beachfest website for a complete list of entertainment at www.parksvillebeachfest.ca.

Circus artist has new tricks Jake West bringing his varied show to Parksville Beachfest LISSA ALEXANDER

reporter@pqbnews.com

There will be a lot of clowning around at the Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition (Beachfest) this year, thanks to circus artist Jake West. West performs physical comedy, jokes, juggling and balancing acts among other things. “I have a lot of new tricks, things people probably haven’t seen before,” he said. West said he was always the class clown in school but he didn’t actually think of becoming a circus performer until he was 26. He went to visit a friend in Cirque du Soleil and tried a number of his apparatuses. “I said, ‘Man! I could do this stuff.’” It was the creativity, imagination and physicality of it all that really hooked him, he said, and now he’s been doing his show for 10 years. The best part for West is making people laugh, and seeing smiling faces in the audience, he said. A self-proclaimed adrenaline junkie, West said he used to thrive climbing mountains, snowboarding in the back country and ice climbing. But his act has topped all these feats, he said. “For me I always been in search of that rush and the biggest high I’ve ever had has been walking off the stage off a good show,” he said. “I can be high for days off that.”

Kulth Music festival to feature über talented Wil BRENDA GOUGH

reporter@pqbnews.com

An exciting cauldron of electronic, folk, reggae, jazz, dance and Island music is on tap for the second annual Kulth Music Festival which runs July 20 to 22 at the Coombs Rodeo Grounds. Showcasing the very best in British Columbian talent, the festival’s main stage will see some top notch performers including The Boom Booms on Saturday night and Wil wrapping up the festival on Sunday afternoon. Wil is an extraordinary Qualicum Beach musician who works his guitar so hard it is no wonder his website is called ibreakstrings.com. The folk, rock and alternative musician has developed his expansive roots-rock sound while building a dedicated following for his famously intense live shows. The celebrated songwriter and composer prefers to play live either solo or with “just a drummer.” At a performance at The Soundgarden in Coombs back in June, Wil told the audience how awesome it was opening for Jann Arden during an Eastern Canada concert tour. He said when he played Massey Hall in Toronto it was incredible and in fact the whole tour was awesome. “We just winged it when I had a broken string and played a song with just five strings,” he recalled. He admitted he is chatty when he is up on stage but for the audience it means they get a glimpse into the stories behind the songs. Some of his songs can be dark but he said writing and performing them is his form of therapy. “With my hard songs I purge myself.” Wil’s performances take the audience down a few paths, some bright, some dark but all per-

formed with raw talent and intensity. Wil recently released his fourth album Heart of Mine to much critical acclaim and has been touring in support of the album. He said he makes albums just because and he will be doing a followup to Heart of Mine. “It’s a tap you don't want to turn off. My last record wasn’t exactly what I wanted and the next one will be closer to what I have always wanted to accomplish,” he admitted. He said it will be a record with really cool singles. “The theme will be singles,” he laughed. The musician agreed that in the world of iTunes making records is becoming a dying art but he isn't about to abandon that aspect of the industry. “I love records and there are still great albums being made. There is so much wonderful stuff out there and I am surrounded by remarkable musicians.” Most recently, Wil was commissioned to write the theme song Ride for this years’ 100th Anniversary of the Calgary Stampede. On July 5 he began performing nightly at Stampede Park in Calgary and will wrap up that gig on July 15. His nightly show named Light Up the Park has been accompanied by a spectacular audio visual masterpiece with special effects, video, laser and pyrotechnics. When Wil isn’t making music, he is a bike mechanic in town. His wife Caroline Lambert Mimnaugh is usually with Wil when he is on tour where she sells a line of recycled guitar string jewelry called ibreakstrings jewelry. All ibreakstrings jewelry is handcrafted using authentic guitar strings broken by Wil during concerts and recording sessions. Each piece is individually made by Lambert Mimnaugh. SEE FROM ON B9

From guitar strings to jewelry, they’ve done it Multi-talented duo are worth checking out CONTINUED FROM PAGE B6

BRENDA GOUGH PHOTO

Qualicum Beach musician Wil, who wrote the Calgary Stampede’s 100th anniversary theme, is one of the many great performers who will be at the Kulth Music Festival July 20 to 22 in Coombs.

The self taught artist took up jewelry making after noticing Wil's waste bin was full of used guitar strings. That was back in 2002 and ever since then she has been creating unique one-of-a-kind pieces that she sells at her husband's concerts. You can check out her line of jewelry at the Kulth festival and watch Wil when he performs his remarkable tunes on Sunday, from 3 to 4 p.m. on the main stage.

It should be noted that camping at the Coombs rodeo grounds is strictly on a first come-first served basis and costs $10 per adult per night. Children under age 12 are free to all events and camping when accompanied by an adult. Festival tickets cost $75 plus HST for both the Saturday and Sunday events. For information on where to purchase tickets visit www.thekulth.ca.

CFC Centre set to mark 30 years in Qualicum Beach

Motorcycle grandma Bucket list wish comes true for Nanoose Bay grandmother NEIL HORNER

The Christian Fellowship Centre in Qualicum Beach is celebrating 30 years in the community this year. On February 15, 1981 the sod was turned to begin the building of the facility at 825 Village Way. Built primarily with volunteer labour, the building opened in June 1982 with John Francis serving as pastor until November of that year. In early 1983, Ed Alexander was approved as pastor and provided leadership for the congregation for the next 10 years. These were years of growth as CFC became known on the Island as a place of prayer and healing as well as the home of an independent Christian School for almost two decades. Following pastor Ed’s retirement in 1993, Graham Powell served as pastor, followed by CFC’s current pastoral team of Brian and Leah Robertson in 1996. CFC is known as an active church, regularly participating in community events such as Qualicum Beach Family Days and the Parksville Canada Day parade, sending teams to serve in developing nations, and hosting events and seminars on topics such as divorce care, healing meetings, kids camp, the silver sleigh craft fair and an annual community Christmas banquet. Continuing in a history of dynamic worship expression, the value of relationship, and faith in the power of God, the congregation is proud to be part of the Oceanside community and looks forward to many more years of ministry.

It’s been over 60 years since Helen Lee of Nanaimo rode a motorcycle, but on Canada Day she turned 97 years old and she decided it was high time to do something about that. On her bucket list, said friend Jim Davidson, was to ride a big hog to the Nanoose Bay Evangelical Free Church. “They met her at the Nanoose Petrocan and drove up Northwest Bay Road and then in to the church,” Davidson said. “She had a ball.” Pastor Chris Wilson and the exuberant congregation waited outside in anticipation of her arrival with a small Canada flag waving in each hand riding on the back of Jason Kristiansen’s 2003 Honda Shadow.

Forward House to fire up the barbie AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com

Everyone is invited to the fun annual Forward House summer barbecue next Friday, July 20. The fun evening and awareness raising event will include a $5 barbecue dinner (carnivore and vegan varieties), treats, games, bake sale, face painting and entertainment as well as a great social atmosphere promised executive director Carol Richardson. An early bird yard sale starts at 4 p.m., with the main barbecue running from 5 to 8 p.m. and a silent auction starting at 6 p.m. Each year they fundraise for different specific projects, raising money for some new windows and plumbing, Richardson said. “Please join us for some fun and good eats and help strengthen our community ,” she said of the event which will help the society continue to support District 69 adults with mental health

and addiction recovery concerns with the relevant tools for healthy autonomy and community inclusion. At the barbecue they will launch their second annual community art project, leaving a canvas out front as they did last summer for people to contribute. They will also launch their second annual virtual walk, continuing on from last year’s walk across Canada to tackle Europe this time. Richardson said they have been lucky with great weather in previous years and there will be plenty of fun family outdoor activities. Contact Forward House to join the walk or sponsor a walker. For more information call 250-954-0785 or e-mail forwardhouse@bcsupernet.com. The event is Saturday, July 20 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Forward House, 129 E. Jensen Avenue, across from the Parksville Civic and Technology Centre.

Post card memories of the past

W

Movie night is ready to role Summer on Vancouver Island is an awesome time of the year, especially when you add to the mix a beloved tradition that started ďŹ ve years ago — FreshAirCinema’s free outdoor movie nights in parks, parking lots, streets, oating barges and beaches in cities and neighbourhoods right across B.C. Many communities kick off their movie nights in July and right here in Parksville a big event is coming up in Community Park. “We are very excited to start the CCCU Sunset Cinema Series in a great venue in Parksville where the whole family can enjoy a free movie night,â€? said Jason Bashnick, FreshAirCinema festival organizer. “These events attract huge crowds every night — people simply love the experience of watching a movie outside.â€? FreshAirCinema is Canada’s premiere outdoor movie company, family owned and based in B.C. FreshAirCinema works alongside Cinema4Change, a not-for-proďŹ t organization whose mandate is to use the power of ďŹ lm to strengthen communities and improve lives. “Proceeds from the Parksville event this year will be directed to Success by Six,â€? added Bashnick. “We believe our event provides them with a great way to raise awareness and important funds to continue the work they do.â€? The Coastal Communities Credit Union’s Sunset Cinema series will stop in nine island communities with the Parksville show on Tuesday, July 17 with pre-movie activities starting at approximately 6 p.m. The movie presented at dusk will feature the most recent animated Dr. Seuss environmental story featuring the orange creature that speaks on behalf of the Truffula trees. “Building on previous year’s success, we are very happy to have partnered with Coastal Community Credit Union to present this series for the fourth year in a rowâ€? said Bashnick. “We see such a social atmosphere before the event where friends and family just relax and enjoy each other’s company. At dusk everyone settles in and has a fantastic experience watching a movie outdoors — you can’t beat that.â€? FreshAirCinema, utilizes a four-story high inatable movie screen creating a complete movie theatre experience. They can turn any park or parking lot into a custom made movie theatre in a matter of hours. They will be presenting close to 400 outdoor movies throughout Canada in 2012 including over 150 in British Columbia. All events are free to the public and begin at dusk. — submitted
