Manhunt on for pizza robber Early Sunday morning sees attack by knife wielding culprit Police are on the lookout for a knife-wielding robber who hit the Parksville Panago Pizza outlet in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 8. Oceanside RCMP Sergeant Darrell Robertson reported the robbery took place at about 1:30 a.m. when a man pulled up to the restaurant on a bicyle at as the lone staff member was preparing to close up for the night. He walked inside, pulled out a knife and demanded money. The employee complied and the man fled the scene on his bicycle up Craig Street with an undisclosed amount of cash. Robertson said the suspect is described as a Caucasian male, with graying hair and a dirty face, possibly a moustache. At the time of the ROBBERY SUSPECT robbery he wore riding glasses, a green bicycle helmet with a small white label on the front, a long-sleeved dark sweater, light-coloured gloves with a dark palm and he had a black or purple backpack. Anyone with information in relation to this incident or knowledge of a suspect fitting the description is requested to contact the RCMP at 250-248-6111. Robertson said the man is considered armed and the public should not approach him.

They don’t have a crystal ball, but they do know that the law of averages is with them and July 21 is statistically one of the most likely to have sunny weather in the entire calendar. Up, up and away! There may be no Airport Appreciation Day this year, but Qualicum Beach aviators are still very much primed for takeoff
T
here may be no Airport Appreciation Day in Qualicum Beach this year, but that doesn’t mean local aviators are all relaxing in their armchairs, dreaming about the day they’ll once again take to the skies. Far from it. This weekend, the ParksvilleQualicum Aero Club hosted a special fly-in event at the airport to not only show off some rather remarkable aircraft to local residents, but also to show off the airport facility to visiting fliers. Aero Club spokesperson Fred Evoy said the club holds the event on alternate years to the Airport Day festivities. The day’s activities kicked off with a pancake breakfast, followed by fly-pasts by a variety of aircraft. Residents were able to take in
a variety of static displays and, for those with a more adventurous bent, could buy a raffle ticket for the chance to go for a ride in Roger York’s T-28 Trojan warbird or go for a spin in a Glasair homebuilt. Although there were aircraft flying in and flying out throughout the day, many members, their guests and fly-in crews made a point to stick around and enjoy a salmon barbecue and dance to the music of Big Twang Theory, from 5 p.m. to midnight. The action wasn’t all in the sky or the runway, either. Just like at the Airport Day event, there was a car show held on the airport grounds for those with a love for machines that are not prone to fly. Evoy said he was pleased with the turnout and, more importantly, the weather. — Neil Horner

Some civically minded Ballenas students want to revitalize Nicholls Park on Pym Street in Parksville. Sebastian Cooper, Kyle Wamer and Hayley Milne, founding members of the Ballenas Civic Action Group, made a presentation to Parksville city council Wednesday describing the history of the park and John Leonard Nicholls, the long time teacher and dedicated community member the park was named to honour in 1979. While the park beside the high school is currently little more than a grass lot, referred to as “burner’s park” because students smoke there, according to coun. Carrie Powell-Davidson, the action group wants to add some more park-like elements to the site. The civic action group, which grew out of their Civics 11 class at the school, surveyed what local residents would like to see in the park and designed three possibilities. They presented council with three proposed budget levels from $8,000 to add a bark mulch
trail, three benches and seven trees, up to a $20,000 version that would add more trees, picnic tables, benches, a garden, gazebo, fence and garbage can. They stressed that those budgets were inflated since they are already exploring grants and donations from local companies and community groups, plus the project would take advantage of student resources to build the benches and plant the trees. They are already working with the Coastal Community Credit Union and have made presentations to the Lions, Rotary and Kiwanis. “I feel I want to stand up and clap for you, I’m so excited to see Ballenas students taking the initiative,” said coun. Carrie Powell-Davidson, who supported the idea along with all the other councillors. Mayor Chris Burger said the student’s effort is exactly the kind of thing this council has been trying to develop — more youth interest and involvement in civic issues. He suggested the student’s proposal to finish the project this summer might be a bit aggressive, but urged them to continue.

The work can be seen through the fence before the opening, then people get a chance to watch the sand artists from across the continent, Spain and Australia up close until the competition closes Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. After the work stops the exhibition begins and the sculptures get a layer of glue once they’re complete that help them stand throughout what organizers are calling “35 days of free entertainment.” Along with the professional competition on the opening weekend, there will be a first ever community sand-sculpture to mark the 30th anniversary. Sponsored by the Coastal Community Credit Union, there will be experts on hand to help the public in the larger adjacent sand pit throughout the weekend. “We want to inspire new sculptors and this is a fun way to learn. Everyone is welcome to experience sculpting with the pros on July 14 and 15,” said society president Cheryl Dill. There is musical entertainment every day from the gazebo and there are complimentary events on many weekends. The second weekend (July 21 & 22) brings the Parksville Lions International Kite Festival to the big field in Community Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days with food concessions, vendors and all manner of kite building and flying displays and tips along with the ever popu-

Organizers are expecting attendance to top 100,000 people through the gates this year and they point out the suggested donation of $2.50 not only keeps the exhibition going but also benefits the community groups that help staff the gates. The owner of a prime commercial property in Parksville wants to build something different. “We want to try to get away from strip mall development,” explained architect Raymond de Beeld who described their proposal as a “mixed urban village.” The commercial/retail units would be more internally and pedestrian oriented, rather than just stores facing the highway explained de Beeld. Most of council appeared very supportive but had some concerns about its distance from downtown (1.7 km from city hall Alexander pointed out) and being located adjacent to agricultural land reserve property. With mayor Chris Burger and coun. Marc Lefebvre excusing themselves for a possible conflict, and coun. Sue Powell absent, the remaining four voted unanimously to forward the item on from the committee of the whole to their regular meeting, on July 16.
Small lot development mulled AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
Parksville council heard a proposal for a unique small lot development at Despard Avenue and Corfield Street. Though the proposed development would have small 330-420 sq.m. lots, they would still be ground oriented, fee simple detached houses with yard or garden spaces, explained consultant Nigel Gray on behalf of Rushan Development Corporation. The proposed 25 units would require an official community plan (OCP) and zoning amendment for the three currently forested lots totaling 1.7 hectares (4.2 acres). The properties are currently multifamily and would have to be changed
to a new small-lot single family zone. Gray suggested the small lots fit in with the city’s stated goal of densification and would allow the houses to be built incrementally, including renovations to increase their size later. Because there is an identified eagle perch tree on the property 21 per cent of it would be set aside as park space and the developer would contribute to a fund for trails in the area that would not be built until the eagles leave. The current zoning, which is left over from the development of the Bridgewater Lane development across Despard, would allow up to 120 apartments or care facility units. The report from staff suggests this
permitted density “appears somewhat out of place given the present surroundings,” which include single family residential and agricultural land reserve land across Corfield. The report estimates the small lot development would generate over a million dollars in tax revenue over the average 50 year life of residencies more than the undeveloped land. The developer would be required to contribute just over $300,000 for upgrading infrastructure including building a sidewalk to Craig Street. In their committee of the whole council unanimously supported the proposal which will be forwarded to a regular council meeting.

IT’S SUMMER IN THE CITY! A recent tweet - A successful July and August in Parksville and Qualicum area is not only contingent on weather, we have to be at our best, smile everyone! It’s not the weather that makes us successful but Parksville’s reputation for being a welcoming community. At the time of writing, the weather is warming and when the hot days of summer do hit, we’ll be ready for a picnic on Parksville Beach, a stroll along our wonderful waterfront walkway or the trails at Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park. Our community has many annual festivals and events. This year’s Canada Day celebrations were a resounding success, July 10 is the fifth fantastic week of the Craig Street Summer by the Sea Street Market and Beach Festival events kickoff later this week. These events are possible because of the spirit and dedication of the many hardworking volunteers from our community and the generosity of our local sponsors. Thank you! Pack your bathing suit, sunglasses and flip-flops! We wish our businesses the best summer ever and whether you plan a staycation, a camping trip to the west coast or something much further afield, we wish you all a most enjoyable summer.
Parksville’s Beach Festival Five weeks of summer fun in Parksville July and August are Beach Festival months in Parksville and as well as sand sculpting, activities include Kitefest (July 21-22), Artisans at the Beach (July 28-29), Oceanside Overdrive Car Show (August 5), Quality Foods Fireworks (August 18), Kidfest (August 19) and daily entertainment during Beach Festival. The City is proud to be one of the community sponsors of the 2012 Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition which is also part of the Parksville Beach Festival. The competition starts on July 14 with events running through August 19, open daily 9 am to 9 pm. In 1982, 100 people attended the first “BC Open” competition. Today, the event is a world class master sculptor competition with attendance of 82,000 last year. More info at parksvillebeachfest.ca

Beach is no place for booze
T
o say there is a time and a place for everything would probably not be accurate. However, within the bounds of good taste and the law, it could very well apply. That is certainly the case with the consumption of alcohol and with displaying the behaviour that often accompanies it. It’s hard to argue against the consumption of alcohol, nor would we particularly want to. Prohibition doesn’t work, as was evidenced in the 1920s with alcohol and with other substances today. That said, a busy beach or crowded park during a hot summer day is probably not the time nor place for that kind of activity. Surprising though it may seem, those other humanoid figures on said beach are actually other people, who probably don’t want to listen as you slur your way through the many reasons why you really don’t like your boss, why that last concert in Vancouver was so awesome or even how, really, he or she loves you guys. In fact, quite the opposite is true. There are few things that can mar a family trip to the seaside more quickly and thoroughly than a bunch of yahooing drinkers giving overly loud vent to their inner alcohol. It’s not too much to ask, surely, for people, if they want to imbibe, to do it away from other people and away from public places. This isn’t really an issue of policing. The police may catch people who are intoxicated in public or they may not. It’s more a matter of self-control and consideration of other people. Unless you own that beach — and can show a free and clear title to it upon request, it’s probably a good idea to leave the booze at home this summer and let the other people in the area continue to enjoy their good time together. We don’t think it’s too much to ask. — Editorial by Neil Horner

Letters FREE SPEECH IS KEY We should be encouraging participation and effective communication. Local groups: If you want mayor and council to attend your event, be sure to address your invitation in writing to mayor and council. Let your group know who you invited so there is no misunderstanding if someone did not attend. Realize that not all of council can attend everything, yet they do appreciate the invitation and it creates greater awareness of your group and event. Council meetings are opportunities for council to make statements on the record and in public. It is appropriate for anyone on council to use this platform if there is something they feel needs to be addressed. Don’t assume that nothing has been done prior to this step to address a situation: example, sharing information about upcoming events with the rest of council. Don’t blame an individual on council for using the tools available to them. It is the media who chooses to highlight and attempt to create issues around specific comments. I take except to a recent editorial by editor, Stephen Heywood where he attacks an individual councillor. I ask if Mr. Heywood spoke with both parties to get their perspectives prior to the editorial. Is it the editor’s role to chastise individual community members? Does the PQB NEWs have political preferences that it is championing? These are the questions the editorial raises for me. I would expect a local paper to be a cham-

JILTED GENERATION Neil Horner’s editorial in the June 26 paper touched on one of the most important social problems arising in our society, the welfare of the future generations. University graduates now pay far more for their education than did previous generations. For those lucky enough to find decent paying work in their chosen field they then spend the next ten years paying off a student loan, problems that the baby boom generation did not really have to face. Only then can they look to starting a family, buying a home and settling down. But to do this, they will have to pay a much higher price for a home, which will further enrich the previous generation, which bought the home for a fraction of the cost. The remainder of their working years will be spent paying into a pension plan from which they will be lucky to recoup their contributions, all the while subsidizing the pensions of their now financially comfortable forbearers. With luck they will be able to retire at 67, having worked far harder, for much longer, for much less financial reward than their parents. SHEILA WILLIAMS Parksville
JILTED GENERATION Once again the democratically challenged and fact adverse Harper Conservatives choose obfuscation and attack ads rather than deal with issues. It is not the economic policies of the NDP we have to fear. It is the Harperites continuing to use all the levers of government to siphon tax payer funds and resources to global corporations in a manner that harms Canada and Canadians while putting at risk future generations capacity to have their energy needs met. The tar sands could be developed in a manner where the corporations pay total costs, there is maximum economic benefit to all Canadians, our future energy needs are ensured and we trade a relatively safe product. The demand for energy isn’t going to go away. Why are the Harper Conservatives resorting to attack ads and pushing bills through rather than entering into discussion with the opposition parties and all Canadians? Aren’t we still a democracy? And the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) … Why the secrecy? Was so much bundled into the omnibus bill C-38, in particular the gutting of our environmental protection legislation? Based on the leaked documents, this is not so much a trade agreement as a hand over of Canada’s resources to mostly foreign global corporations for their benefit YVONNE ZAROWNY Qualicum Beach See LETTERS, page A12

letters A CITY ROOT CANAL The case of the development permit for the site of the Parksville Beach Resort once again shows what ails politics in this country, from the municipal all the way to the federal level. Opposing for the sake of opposition, without offering any real solutions. It is usually government that will use rules and regulations to block or promote whatever suits their agenda. Well, the tables have been turned. Note the hand-wringing reluctance and opposition of Parksville city council when confronted with a development proposal that in every single aspect meets or exceeds the guidelines established by the city of Parksville itself. What a sad and embarrassing performance by elected and well paid officials who don’t even bother to read up on their own city’s rule book. Comments made by commercial developers

to me over the years have convinced me that many would prefer to enjoy a root canal while simultaneously having a prostate exam, over having to deal with Parksville city hall. To wit, observe the blazing pace of development in the Parksville Industrial Park, which still to a good part consists of weed infested empty lots. I wholeheartedly applaud Bernie Walsh for the intestinal fortitude to see this process through a whole decade. I do not personally know Mr. Walsh but can not help but admire the way he kept this development from being railroaded by municipal inertia and incompetence. May this very nice looking project be a prosperous one for him and his partners — it will certainly enrich downtown Parksville, no thanks to past and present city council. HAROLD GRINDL Nanoose Bay

Garden tour set for Saturday LISSA ALEXANDER News Reporter
Towering pale pink poppies, bright yellow lupines and perfectly round purple alliums are just a few reasons to set out on Bard to Broadway and the Coast Realty Group’s Home & Garden Tour Saturday, July 14. The flowers in this particular garden belong to San Pareil resident Art Drysdale and ticket holders will find a vast array of greenery to cast their eyes upon at the eclectic, beach front property. “I would call us more of an English garden because it’s everything,” said Drysdale, pointing out his white, variegated Hedge Maple, his Birds of Paradise, climbing roses and water lilies. Inside interests will continue to pique with a cabinet from the 1956 film High Society. “Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra danced in front of this in the movie,” Drysdale explained. He and his partner snagged it with the house, and learned of its origin from a former owner of the house who had purchased the cabinet from a production company in Los Angeles.
Dysdale’s home also contains a Tiffany lamp shade, many interesting antiques, a variety of clocks and a rare tree called a Wollemi (or Wollemia) Pine, one of the world’s oldest and rarest trees that was only known through fossil records until 1994 when it was discovered in Australia (according to wollemipine.com and Wikipedia). Discover Drysdale’s and other’s homes at your own pace on the tour this weekend and proceeds will benefit Bard to Broadway Theater Society. The tour goes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and guests will receive a map, driving instructions and will be greeted by volunteers at each home. Admission for all homes and gardens is $30 per person, maps can be purchased at both Parksville and Qualicum Beach Coast Realty Groups and Visitor Centres, as well as Cultivate Garden & Gift in Parksville and Ken-Dor Garden Centre in Qualicum Beach. For more information call Coast Realty at 250 248-8371.

FINE DINING
Popular eatery gets a brand new brand Parksville’s Rod and Gun cafe is now called 1869 Bistro BRENDA GOUGH
reporter@pqbnews.com
The Rod and Gun’s well-known café officially got a new name on June 30. Now called 1869 Bistro, the cafe has updated it’s decor and menu items. Rather than impose his own vision for the new moniker, Kevin Hitch, the general manager of the landmark establishment in the heart of Parksville decided to rely on the regular customers to come up with the name and so held a contest to come up with a new name. Several submissions rolled in and, after the judges hemmed and hawed a little bit, the winner was
declared to be Mark Tapper of Comox. His wife Pat said Mark thought the old photographs on the walls of the restaurant were interesting and he noticed that one indicated the building was constructed in 1898. At that point the name just came to him. Mark wasn’t at the official relaunch of the cafe. He would have liked to, but he was courtside, watching tennis at Wimbledon in England. However, he was well represented at the ceremony, as his wife, and a group of friends from Nanoose Bay were at the cafe on June 30 to celebrate the occasion.

Moving estate to kids too early can be a mistake
S
ome folks seem to think that once their spouse has passed away they should now add their kids as joint owners to their investments to avoid probate fees and the estate, this might not be the wisest move. Firstly, this can only be a consideration for non- registered or cash accounts as registered accounts do not allow for multiple owners. With registered accounts you have the ability to designate a beneficiary thus avoiding the estate and probate. The Amazing Hair Studio in French Creek is doing some amazing things for the Salvation Army Food Bank. Salon owner Kleja Talmanis regularly collects food for the agency at her studio located at the French Creek Marina which she opened in October 2010. Talmanis said anyone who brings in a food donation has their name entered into a contest to win a free haircut. She makes a draw four times a year saying it is a way to give back and she said the community has always been generous. “Some clients bring in bags of food, others just one can, but it all adds up,” she stated. Salvation Army Major Rolf Guenther agreed and said the small businesses in Oceanside may not be able to donate a pallet of food, but a box of groceries makes a big difference because they need a steady supply of food year round and in the long run it all helps.
Raffle winners named First prize in the Oceanside Stroke Recovery raffle, a $100 Quality Foods gift certificate, was won by Kristine Mikkelsen of Qualicum Beach. Second prize, a $75 Quality Foods gift certificate, was won by W. Luke of Parksville, while the third prize of a $50 Quality Foods gift certificate was won by Pat Fox. A $30 Quality Foods gift certificate was also awarded to Jim Werdal of Qualicum Beach as the volunteer who sold the most tickets. Proceeds go to therapy for stroke survivors.

Graham Beard studies tiny fossils in a sample of rock from the Campbell River area.
A Fruit for the History Books NEIL HORNER
news@pqbnews.com
Qualicum Beach
verybody knows about apples, about oranges, bananas and grapes. Many The Parksville/Qualicum Beach people are even becoming accustomed to more exotic varieties, dragonfruit, starfruit and such. Graham Beard though, thinks he’s run into a fruit that not only will never make it to supermarket shelves, but which nobody else has ever seen and you could certainly never eat. The fruit, said the Qualicum Beach paleontologist, doesn’t have a name, but he’s pretty sure it’s about 45 million years old. It came from a dig site in a particularly rich fossil bed near Campbell River. “About a dozen new species have been discovered up by Campbell River,” Beard said. “It’s an amazing site. I would say about 50 per cent of the concretions have fossils in them. It’s very fossiliferous.” The find, he said, is exciting. “It might be a new fruit that is totally new to science,” he said. It’s about the size of a large almond and it has a series of lockules — little compartments — and each has a little seed. I’m pretty sure this is something new. I’ve seen lots of fruits and seeds from this site and I’ve never seen one like this.”
E
Beard is a retired teacher who has amassed a world-class fossil collection over the past 30 years, only a small portion of which is on display at the Qualicum Beach Museum. He has several species named after him, one of which, a small species of walnut, was found at the Campbell River site. That’s pretty exciting, but it was another fossil, found many years ago, that most stands out in his mind. “The most memorable fossil I can remember was when went to Drumheller as a 10 and my dad and I were out collecting,” he said. “We found a piece of an Albertosaurus tooth. It was just a piece of the tooth, but it was really large,m a bout two and a half centimetres in diametre. Dad called me over and said, ‘what’s this?’ I went ballistic. He asked what was wrong with me. I was so excited about finding that.” Beard went on to become a teacher at Kitsilano High School in Vancouver in 1966. He came to Qualicum Beach in 1970 and taught in both Qualicum Beach and Parksville until he retired 15 years ago. He now serves as a volunteer for Vancouver Island University’s Eldercollege program, as well as a guest lecturer and honourary research associate for VIU’s geology department.

Skimboarding magic on the Island BY JAMES CLARKE sports@pqbnews.com
The first, hopefully annual OSBC ProAm Skimboard Competition took centre stage in Parksville Bay on Saturday, as 37 riders of varying skill sets showed plenty of grit when they took to the tidal pools for some fun in the sun. Hosted by Oceanside Skim Beach Culture, the event was played out in front of the Beach Club and featured pro riders from B.C. and Washington as well as one from Germany. The amateurs were up first, and the pros, 10 in all, capped it off when they wowed the crowd for over an hour. Qualicum Beach’s Ryan Stewart was the top local on the day, locking up the Over 18 division and first in flatland and features. Well-run with plenty of swag, there were also unique keepsake trophies for the winners as well. DB Skimboards’ founder Richard Doctor from Tacoma was also in the mix leaving it all out on the sand. “It was a lot of fun,” he confirmed after. “Great weather, great venue — just a really good opportunity to ride and have fun; a great showcase for Vancouver Island and for the sport.” “I like it here,” a bushed but visibly pleased Friedrick Fitch from Deutschland surmised after. Fitch, 19, is sponsored by DB Boards and is on the West Coast for a month. Next up for the teenager is a competition in Houston, Texas, and after that the Sacramento Skimfest. “This is my first time in Canada,” he said, adding “it was a dream for me as a child to travel and see the world.”

American Pro Blake Zimmerman nails a landing on Saturday.
Turns out skimboarding is big in Europe he said, pointing to the annual skimfest in Poland that attracts over a hundred entries each year. Kyda Skimboards’ Kyle Lynch from Vancouver was also out there laying down some sweet tricks and clearly hav-
ing a blast. “This is great,” he confirmed. “This is the kind of exposure you want, and it’s good for Parksville, too — it gives the kids around here something to do.” “It’s going really good,” and upbeat event co-organizer Julia Mountain, aka
Momma Skim, confirmed late in the day. “It was magic really,” John Mountain said from the shoreline after it was over; “all those people watching ... and the best thing was all the young kids that turned out to be part of it — that made it all worth while.”
Royals’ pitch success BY JAMES CLARKE sports@pqbnews.com
Royals’ ace Clayton Isherwood was back on the hill for the hometown club Saturday, as he helped nail down a 6-2 game one win and a split in their BCPBL double header against the Victoria Eagles. In action up at Inouye-Wallace Field, Isherwood — back home from the Dominican Republic with the Canadian Jr. National team and making his first appearance in almost a month — pitched a complete game, striking out a team-high 13 batters and holding the free-swinging Eagles to

The Parksville Rage savour their second place finish in Victoria.
Hard earned second for Rage BY JAMES CLARKE sports@pqbnews.com
The Parksville Rage girls rep fastball team is back home and feeling good about their game after a great showing at their big year-end tournament. In action in Victoria June 22-24 for the Squirt Girls Regional Championships featuring 21 Island teams and over 320 players aged 11-12, the Rage, who were competing in the C division, had a tough draw but beat Gordon Head 15-7 in their tournament opener. Rage head coach Kevin Spicer said Maddi Campbell and Savanna DeBruyne “hit very well with the rest of team running the bases with speed.” The Rage lost their second game, “a miserable cold and rainy game” 18-6 to the Peninsula Blue Eagles — standouts were Meriana Spicer and Erin Plank for their hitting. The third game of the day at 6 p.m. was against the top team of the tournament, Langford Lightning #3. Starting pitcher Meriana led the team into the third inning and the Rage were leading 1-0 when she had to pulled with a back injury. The Rage could not hold the top team down and lost 9-3, “but the Langford team and coaches were very impressed with all the girls in their base running, hitting and positional play as we gave them a good scare,” said coach Spicer. Back at it Sunday morning for the playoffs, Parksville hung on to beat the Central Saanich Executors 15-12. Maddi Jacobsen and Megan McCrae pitched well while Taylyn Squire, Hailey Woods, Serena DeWaal contributed by getting on base at every bat. In the semi-final against the Nanaimo Southside Sliders the Rage girls pulled off an
exciting 12-11 win that included a clutch tworun single by Alexa Mitchell that scored pinch runner Taylyn Squire and Megan McCrae, “demonstrating that having fun is more important than winning.” In the gold medal game against the Oak Bay Comets, Spicer said his squad “faced a strong pitcher that shut our hitters down for three innings.” The locals were able to get a few runs back in the fourth inning led by Syvanna McNichol and Adyn Taporowski, but Oak Bay’s lead was too much to overcome. “As a couple of girls pointed out though, we placed 2nd out of eight teams (in their pool), and 10th out of 21 teams on Vancouver Island.’ After receiving their medals the Rage players and their coaches were surprised and duly pleased to win the tournament trophy for ‘Most Talented team’. This trophy, Spicer explained, was presented by the tournament directors to the team that demonstrated during the entire weekend the most sportsmanship, team spirit, cooperativeness, team play, class, best team poster and most importantly having the most fun, and as such, “I am very proud that my team won this trophy — it demonstrates to me that the girls learned fastball skills that improved their ability to play this game but more importantly it means they understand what it means to win with class. “I believe all the girls will be back next year, not because of the scores, but because they have developed friendships, memories, and support for each other as a team, and Parksville should be proud of these kids as they represented our community really well.”

Mosquito AA hosts finals
ALL STOCK #1 IN QUALITY!
Local little league team preparing for Island championships BY JAMES CLARKE sports@pqbnews.com
Oceanside’s Mosquito AA rep team is out to a great start in its exhibition season, as they prepare to play hosts to their Island finals. In action up at Springwood Old June 30 for their second double header — the week before they earned a split against AAA Comox — the Oceanside Reds swept the Salt Spring Islanders 8-6, 17-12. “They’re coming along really well,” Reds’ coach Andy Macdonald said after, adding his squad of 13, 9 to 11 year olds “are really starting to play together as a team. Their hitting, fielding, and pitching is all coming along,” he said, pointing out “we have a fairly solid roster of pitchers; we have been throwing a different
pitcher out there every inning, and they have all pitched very well.” Oceanside has three rep teams this summer including another Mosquito team in Single A, as well as a AA Bantam team. Rep teams are required to have at least 12 players on their roster. Victoria, Duncan, and Nanaimo typically field Single-A and AAA teams. Based on the number of teams in their house league, Oceanside is a AA association. UP NEXT The Reds’ exhibition games are all in preparation for the three-team Vancouver Island Championships slated for Parksville July 28-29 when the Reds, Islanders and Cannons will square off for the right to go to the BC’s. The two top teams go to the provincials slated for Surrey.
Royal to BC Summer Games BY JAMES CLARKE
JAMES CLARKE PHOTO
You can add the name of another local selected to compete at the upcoming BC Summer Games. Parksville Royals’ rookie infielder Liam Ballance from Errington has been chosen to lace up for the Zone 6 baseball team bound for Surrey. “A great accomplishment for him,” Royals’ head coach Dave Wallace said of Liam’s selection, pointing out “he’s the youngest player in the league — he’s still eligible to play Bantam baseball. He’s struggled at times, but that’s to be expected — he’s playing against guys a lot older then he is in some cases, but he’s not intimidated (and) he’s done very well. We’re very pleased with his progress,” said the longtime skipper, “and he’s going to be a big contributor to the program for the next three years.”

Aiming for post season According to Wallace there are seven teams battling for the final two playoff spots. The Royals have 14 regular season games remaining — 10 against teams right above them in the standings. “Oh yeah,” the longtime skipper answered when asked if his team still has a shot at post-season play. We’ve talked about this — we probably have to win 10 of our last 14 games, which is very achievable,” he said.

Teddy bears flock to Nanoose Bay park
LISSA ALEXANDER
reporter@pqbnews.com
Children and their Teddy bears kept blissfully busy on the weekend as the 21st annual Teddy Bear Picnic and Nanoose Days Parade took place. The short parade had kids up and out of their lawn chairs waving at the giant mascots, horses and fire trucks as they made their way from the Nanoose Bay Fire Hall to Jack Bagley Field. Hundreds of families made their way down the winding path in the shining sunshine to the field where a number of Teddy bear booths were set up, along with bouncy castles, a dunk tank, educational stations, karaoke station and more. Kids registered their Teddy bears and received a passport which collected stamps at each of the sta-
tions and gave them free food and cake. Teddy bears enjoyed a teddy bear chute ride, sick bear clinics, and safety clinics to name a few. The Regional District of Nanaimo’s (RDN) Team Watersmart was one of the educational stations on site, teaching about water conservation and protection. Children read trivia questions and found answers on the bottom of rubber duckies to win stickers. Twenty corporate mascots roaming around the field had some kids smiling and giving high fives, while others ran or hid behind their parents. Island Farms’ Farmer Vicky and Daisy the Cow were a big hit for toddlers as usual, while the newly walking seemed happy just to be toddling around the field.

The second Lighthouse Bluegrass Festival took place last weekend in Qualicum Bay and organizers report the numbers were up from last year. “The festival was a success, despite a few rainy spots, a few people sat out with umbrellas and quite enjoyed it,” said organizer Bob Thorburn. Thorburn said the sun did break out throughout the festival and people really enjoyed the top notch music. Organizers are now gearing up for the Coombs Bluegrass Festival which will stretch over four days this year, from August 2 to 5. Eleven bands will be making their way to the festival, some hailing from the United States and others from around British Columbia. For more information visit www.coombsbluegrass.com.

RISE UP:: Nanaimo car collector Floyd Werning was on hand at the Qualicum Beach municipal airport on Saturday to take part in a special car show to go along with the airport’s fly-in event. His 1936 Dodge Brothers may be riding low right now, but when he needs to go over a curb or go cross-country, he can raise the chassis on an air cushion system. The car was originally from Chicago, the 1930s home of Pretty Boy Floyd and other gangsters of the Prohibition era.

dividual applications for a height variance rather than automatically piling on another storey? What is wrong with being unique rather than like most other towns in the country? No doubt there is a price for being special, but residents for the most part appear willing to pay it. Is it those who consider only the bottom line as evidence of success who want the changes, and the residents be damned? Of course people go out of town to do certain shopping; that’s one of the costs of retaining warm village character, but businesses which provide the basic necessities are holding their own. There are enough artisans and specialty outlets to lure the tourists; why the rath-
er drastic changes to the OCP? Individuals tighten their belts in tough economic times. Well run businesses do the same. Maybe there are businesses and wouldbe business people who don’t wear belts. When it comes to “… a growing isolation of the town council from the community ..” it’s time for the community to hunker down and fight another day. Never throw up your hands!

How could Qualicum Beach, special though it is, avoid a lessening of business, and spending? If there are already blank store fronts, how will building more commercial space bring in more merchants and shoppers? Unless, of course, we bring in some big box stores and fast food outlets. That’ll put QB charm on the line. What will adding another storey to new building accomplish except to restrict sunlight and views? How much sky and mountain have already been blocked out by uprising new structures? If QB’s attraction lies in its warm, village character why are height restrictions being trashed in the OCP?
