Living on island time at Squirrel Cove If you are planning a trip this summer, there is a treasure destination on the B.C. Coast that is really worth checking out: Squirrel Cove. Heard of it, yet? Fishing 2X14 Corner with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com Salt water fishing in the past number of weeks has been generally described as spotty, but some fishing guides have been out consistently and are catching some fish over 25 pounds. Steve Sedore from Red Deer, Alberta caught his 30 pound Chinook fishing at Shelter Point. Bates Beach and Kitty Coleman are still fishing well. Nootka Sound on the West Coast has salmon down deep in 75 to 90 feet of water. Coho have been showing up in good numbers and are averaging 6 to 7 pounds. Remember to check local regulations before harvesting wild Coho. Bottom fishing has been excellent in all areas with limits of Ling Cod, Halibut and Rock Fish. Lake fishing remainss Brandi Miller - 28.5 lb Spring good for Rainbow and Cutthroat. Any combination of spoons and spinners is working well, either casting from shore or trolling from a boat. In Courtenay, Maple Lake is a fun spot to fish and has been recently stocked. Wolf Lake has fished well. Watch for road restrictions on some logging roads. The alpine lakes at Mount Washington are still snowed in and it will be weeks to come before the snow is gone. The fishing season in this area is very short. The Elk River has been very good for the fly fishermen and conditions should be even better in weeks to come. There are some great spots where you can float and fish but at the moment, this river can be dangerous to wade from shore. The Elk is one of the finest rivers to fish on Vancouver Island.

CUMBERLAND — He comes from the planet of Funkathon, where he was head cook to King Zaxxon until he ran out of sweet potatoes — which prompted an intergalactic trek in his space galleon to swap stories and songs for spuds. Since landing on Planet Earth, he has been performing and teaching kooky games and dances in B.C. and Alberta, making videos and creating awardwinning educational programs.
On one memorable occasion, he sang for the Dalai Lama during a trip to India. He is none other than the singing, storytelling space pirate known as Captain Thunderpants — aka the town crier of Cumberland and Trashy Duke in the Dukes of Dodge. His real name is Kevin Flesher, a children’s entertainer who plays “at least a dozen instruments badly,” including the guitar and accordion. He has drawn inspiration from characters on Sesame Street, the Muppets
and Sponge Bob. “Jim Henson was probably my hero,” Flesher said. As Captain Thunderpants, he hosted a pirate variety show in Cumberland that featured a fiddler who Flesher “grabbed off the street that day.” A Robbie Burns Day variety show and a Christmas Spectacular followed. “Studio Live (in
