The Town of Golden held a special public hearing on June 26 at the Town Office in regards to the proposed Zoning Bylaw 1294. According to Gary Smith, Manager of Development Services Town of Golden, staff has been working for two years to have a completely up to date bylaw for council to consider. The bylaw has the potential to influence many different aspects of proposed developments in Golden. Smith explained the process started in 2010 which
has included two public open houses, one public hearing and information posted on the Town’s website since January. “The proposed zoning reflects recent changes in the best land use practices,� Smith said. Smith explained that changes in uses where zone changes are being brought in will be grandfathered in over time. “They will be allowed to continue until the use ceases for a period of six months or more,� Smith said. Smith went on to add, “Though as planners we strive to have a bylaw that serves everyone’s needs, the document is a fine balance representing and reflecting the
aspirations of the residents, business community and other uses,� Smith said. The public was then given a chance to share it’s views on the proposed bylaw. The first member of the gallery to speak was coowner of Kicking Horse Interiors, Andrew Commons. “There are some very fine words there Gary (Smith). There is just one small word which was missing and that was viability. That was the most important word that we have to take into consideration when looking at this bylaw,� Commons said. continued on page 4

Golden's Water Smart program is well underway, and Mayor Christina Benty was one of the first residents to have her yard assessed. Avinga Atkinson, the water smart ambassador for the Town of Golden, walked around Benty's yard, looked at some soil samples, and talked about the best way to maintain her lawn. "I can identify the different microclimates within the yard, and talk about some of the problem areas," said Atkinson. In Benty's southfacing home, as in many homes, the
grass up against the house tends to dry out faster. That is because the the sun bounces off of the house and saturates the grass. Atkinson assessed that Benty had been taking good care of her lawn. She usually waters for about 15 minutes in the mornings (on her watering days), and the samples he took revealed rich, moist soil. There was one dryer patch near the edge of the property that Atkinson believes is a result of snow piling in that spot over the winter. If other home owners have a similar problem, Atkinson said a bit of extra watering in that area should fix it. Healthier lawns, which need less

water, are also achieved through proper mowing practices. If you leave the grass two to three inches tall it helps choke out the weeds. Also, more frequent mowings produce shorter clippings, which reduces clumping that can block water and sun from the lawn. The ultimate goal of the program, funded jointly by the Town of Golden and the Columbis Basin Trust, is to encourage people to consume less water. So everyone who signs up for a free assessment gets a free water timer to attach to the faucet. Assessments are free, just call the Town office at 344-2271 to book one.
As we roll into summer and bicycle season, the Golden/Field RCMP Detachment wishes to remind the public of the importance of practicing safe riding. Not only should all riders maintain their bicycles in good working order, while riding, they should also attempt to be as visible as possible to others, be sure to cycle in traffic safely and predictably, and familiarize themselves with and obey the rules of the road. In the Province of British Columbia, all cyclists are required by law to wear an approved helmet with CSA, ANSI, ASTM, or SNELL standards approvals clearly designated within the helmet. Individuals not wearing helmets while cycling could be subject to a $29 violation ticket under the Motor Vehicle Act. Although receiving a ticket may be enough to let the air out of anyone’s tires, individuals should wear a helmet not only to avoid a potential ticket but to minimize the risk of severe injury. According to the East Kootenay Brain Injury Association, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is the number one killer and disabler of young Canadians under the age of 40 and, every year, 50,000 Canadians sustain brain injuries.
Safe Kids Canada points out that a properly fitting bike helmet helps protect the head by absorbing the force from a crash or a fall, and decreases the risk of a serious head injury by as much as 85 per cent and brain injury by 88 per cent. The important influence of adult role models on children’s helmet wearing behaviour can also not be underestimated while it has also been shown that investing resources in creating and enforcing helmet legislation to increase bike helmet use has significant cost-saving potential. It has been estimated that for every one dollar spent on bike helmets, $30 in injury costs are prevented. In an effort to promote and encourage the safe use of bicycle helmets, while on patrol this summer, the Golden/Field RCMP bicycle patrol will be watching for youth wearing helmets and rewarding them with vouchers for treats from local businesses. Golden resident honoured with a Public Service Award Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net For more than three decades this man’s job has been to figure our Mother Nature’s plan, and try to work around it. Bruce McMahon has just been recognized for his 32 years of service at Mount Revelstoke and Glacier National Parks with a Public Service Award of Excellence 2012 for “Outstanding Career.” “I was into backcountry skiing in a big way in the late 70s, and there weren’t that many people doing it. I had a few close calls with unstable snow, and I realized I either need to
quit this, or learn about snow and safety,” said McMahon, explaining why he first became interested in the Roger’s Pass program. “I had no intention of staying, I thought I’d learn a little bit about snow and see where it takes me. And I’m still there.” McMahon is now the Senior Avalanche Forecaster, which means he runs the avalanche program. He and his team of roughly 12 professional mountaineers, are responsible for the snow analysis, avalanche control, and timing of highway and park closures, as well as mountain search
and rescue in the Mt. Revelstoke and Glacier Field Unit. “When push comes to shove, what we do is intervene on Mother Nature’s behalf. We closely monitor snowpack conditions and when certain thresholds are reached, we close and create avalanches at a time that’s suitable” he said. “We do our best to estimate (timing of closures). So we have a rough idea, but you never know what’s going to happen. Sometimes you get results bigger than you expected, and then our timing is out the window.” On average McMahon and his team have High-
way 1 west of Golden closed 100 hours a year, however the 2011/2012 winter season was far worse than usual for avalanche control. McMahon was nominated for the prestigious Public Service Award by Brenda DeMone, associate director of parks canada. “I know actually when she did it. She was asking some funny questions, like I was about to get a pink slip or something,” he said. The awards ceremony was in Gatineau, Quebec, and he was flown out for the festivities. When McMahon got out there, he was surprised and honored to learn his award
was going to be presented by Alan Latourelle, CEO of Parks Canada. “He is a man that I respect very highly,” said McMahon. A 32-year career has many highlights, especially one as distinguished as McMahon’s. But the most rewarding achievement has been the development of the Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale, a tool now recognized internationally as the most effective and accurate means of classifying wilderness avalanche terrain. McMahon remembers developing the scale during a frustrating time when backcountry recreational enthusiasts were

still being used by Parks Canada and around the world. “It really has been an outstanding career.”
Concerns over debris in Kinbasket raised at regular council meeting Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar A discussion about the importance of debris management on the Kinbasket Reservoir was discussed at the regular council meeting held on June 26. The decision was made to have Town staff send correspondence to the Comptroller of Water Rights stressing how debris must be looked after because of the areas importance as a Golden public recreation area. The discussion also looked at how recent high waters have affected the reservoir. “The value of the Kinbasket and what it presents to our com-
munity is a great deal. We need to make that reservoir as much of a product as we can to attract people from the recreational and commercial side of things,” said councillor Ron Oszust. “The debris on that reservoir is massive and it impedes the ability to make it a prime or secondary recreational area. I think we need to keep going to the province.” Councillor Caleb Moss added, “ We do recognize as a council that this is outside of the boundaries and is most definitely as politics go, a regional issue. But it affects our recreation area and we can lend support too.”
Election Officers named With an open seat on council the Town has taken the first step to a by-election by appointing Jon Wilsgard as Chief Election Officer and Viv Thoss as the Deputy Chief Election Officer. Wilsgard explained as long as the by-election is not acclaimed the it will be held on September 8, 2012. “If in fact the Fall Faire goes through it will be like in 2009 and the by-election will be held at the College of the Rockies,” Wilsgard said. He went on to explain the budget cap for the election will be $13000.

Chamber to present to Town of Golden council on Bridge to Bridge poll results Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net It has been a busy time for the Kicking Horse Country Chamber of Commerce. The group has been working to collect data from a pole which was taken by members in regards to the proposed Bridge to Bridge project. Now that the data has been collected the group’s president, Lori Baxendale, will be presenting the finding to the Town of Golden Council. “We are very grateful for the effort that the Town of Golden has made in allowing us to present the results of the survey we have done with our membership in relation to the Bridge to Bridge pro-
ject,” Baxendale said. She went on to explain that upon the closing of the survey the results and comments were carefully collected by the policy and advocacy committee of the board and condensed the information. “We are going to present this to our board at the next meeting on July 11 while the Town has been gracious enough to allow us to present this to them on July 3 before the discussion during the special open council session where they will be discussing the project,” Baxendale said. She went on and said it is important that the voices of the membership be heard and she is happy the council is willing to hear
from the chamber. “We have forged a relationship where we are able to communicate the wishes and desires of our members to the Town,” she said. Baxendale explained due to the meeting with council and the chamber board meeting later this month the decision to release the results to the public has been delayed until those discussions are held. “We have not had a board meeting yet to present them to the board and we have not had the meeting with the Town of Golden to present the findings to them,” Baxendale said. However she did add the survey results are online at www.goldenchamber.ca.
Town of Golden staff to look at concerns raised by residents continued from page 1 He questioned how the new regulations would affect costs of new business structures to be built in the future in Golden. Commons went on to point out new regulations dealing with landscaping, parking stalls and issues with commercial delivery along with other development issues would drive up costs for new businesses which he felt would ruin the viability of any business. He also raised concerns about businesses which are only open seasonally and may be closed long enough for the new rules to then apply based on changes in zoning. Commons also felt the Town should have come to local businesses to discuss the changes. “Rather than
putting barriers up you should have a situation where barriers are not there in the first place. As a whole community we should be looking at how we can improve our lives by improving our overall situation,” Commons said. In the end he said he was happy with the meeting and “I do appreciate a lot of the sentiments in the new bylaw are well thought out. There are a lot of good things in there but the viability of a lot of what is in there simply is not going to work,” Commons said. Local resident Keith Hern said, “This particular document is infinitely better than what we started with two years ago,” Hern said. “What is needed now is a review of the details.” Hern brought up that some of the changes which are being proposed in reference to chan-

ges to certain zones are redundant along with clarity on rule changes between integrated secondary suites and secondary class dwellings. Other issues brought up at the meeting varied from a concern of having commercial zones backing up onto residential sites and questions over where the benefit was to changing the zoning designation to certain areas. Many of those in attendance requested the third reading not take place to give staff the chance to look at the issues brought up at the hearing. After some discussion during the regular council meeting council decided the zoning bylaw should be sent back to staff to look at the issues brought up by the public during the special public hearing. This means if changes are
made there will have to be another public hearing in the future dealing with the zoning bylaw. “Given that there has been information brought forward this evening...it would be beneficial to me not to move this reading because there are things I do not fully understand,” said Councillor Caleb Moss. “I have no intention of quashing the bylaw or getting rid of it. I think taking more time addressing some of the issues brought up this evening would be useful.” Councillor Chris Hambruch agreed and felt it was important to thank those people who came out to the special meeting and raise their concerns. Staff said they would work with the public to look at the concerns and return with options in the future.

Leo Club of Golden goes APES Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net The Leo Club of Golden made a trip to Alexander Park Elementary School on June 22 to make a special delivery to the Grade 1 students. As part of the Victims of Violence program, the Leos handed out “My Personal ID Kit� packages to the kids.
They were told to take them home to their parents. The kits allow parents to store information about their children, such as fingerprints and DNA. In the event that a child goes missing, parents will then have all that information to give to the police. The project used to be taken on by the Lions Club of Golden, but has since been passed down to the younger generation Leos.
Giant Steps taken to help raise funds Donna Grainger, Executive Director East Kootenay Foundation for Health Last December Suzanne Struthers from the Giant Steps Preschool decided to honour one of her student’s mother, Lisey Lalonde, one of the faces of the A Clear View, the digital mammography campaign by starting a poinsettia fundraiser that brought in more than $530 during December. Struthers and the pre-schoolers’ efforts haven’t stopped there. With various activities and encouragement to friends and family the Giant Steps Preschool has since made an additional two gifts bringing their trio of fundraisers to a total of $1,125. “In a campaign that is focused on raising a million dollars, it is so rewarding to see individuals and groups that realize that every penny counts and makes a difference. It is not the size of a gift but in the giving that will make the A Clear View a success,� said Donna Grainger of the East Kootenay

There were many “ifs� in the 1.5 second standard perception/reaction time that I used when conducting the analysis of a highway collision. If the driver was paying attention, if the driver realized what he was seeing, if the driver reacted appropriately, if the driver...that’s a lot of ifs. For many driving situations it is likely far more appropriate to consider 3 or 4 seconds, not 1.5. Perhaps the most recognized time dependent perception/reaction consideration when driving is following distance. Everyone should be familiar with the Two Second Rule and the encouragement to extend it to 3 or 4 seconds for anything but ideal driving conditions. It’s not that difficult to do and one day you might be glad that you made a habit of it. Where else could this apply in your daily drive? Let’s consider signaling a lane change. If signals are used at all, it is often one blink after the vehicle starts to move toward the adjacent lane, one blink as it crosses over the white line and one blink as it takes up residence in the chosen lane. All that really tells surrounding traffic is what you did, not what you are going to do. Three to four seconds of signal before your vehicle starts to move laterally will insure drivers around you perceive that something is going to happen, decide how it is going to affect them and if necessary give them time to react and avoid a collision if you are making a mistake. Hot summer times Summer is officially here even if the chilly nights and days of rain are not being agreeable, the time has come for many people to start planning vacations and take a break from their cares and worries. We all know that when the graduates walk across the stage and take the diplomas it is truly the sign another season is preparing to kick in. It is a fun two night for the grads who get a chance to show By Darryl Crane off their sense of style (both clothes and their rides to the prom) and also a time where more photos will be taken of them than any other time in their lives ...except maybe a wedding. Many things change after these days. In Golden it will be an interesting week. Between the time of the newspaper going to press and the day it comes out there will be a meeting at council to take a look at the next step in the Bridge to Bridge. Many people think enough signatures were gathered which could make the next step a referendum in the town. Of course the debate will rise over whether or not this is the step to take or should the council call it a day and send the grants back to the province. It is easy at times to sit on the outside looking in through a window and know what the best plan is for a town moving forward. This only works in the movies and occasionally on television of course. There is a risk involved where large amounts of money are to be spent. It is that way in business just as it is in government. No one can see into the future and in many cases we are left with a best guess scenario. One thing is for sure in Golden at the present moment. Those people who believe in the project do not seem willing to shift their goal to get the it started, and on the flip side those who are against the project seem prepared to dig in for the long haul to see it stopped. The issue has become the topic of debate for many months now and does not seem to be going anywhere unless in a surprise move it suddenly is taken off the agenda by council and put in the basket as a project for another time. Betting money in town seems to see a long summer of debate leading to a vote where hopefully more people come out than we saw in the last election held. The issue should not be decided by a couple of hundred people due to its importance to the community, and it is great to have passion on either side. But if a vote is to decide where this much of the town’s money will be spent, here is hoping you take a few minutes to drop by and have your say. The more people who get involved in what is happening only increases the hope that the right and fair decision will be made for the future of the area. After all the little project between two bridges has become a political hot potato which has sparked passion and debate for many different reasons. I myself will be at the council meeting on July 3 and will be very interested to see what the summer will bring.

Throughout the years, the Auxiliary’s support has allowed us to purchase a number of pieces of equipment that help staff and physicians maintain our high standard of care and comfort for patients and clients.
Golden and District Hospital & Durand Manor staff would like to send a huge thank you to the Hospital Auxiliary members. The Auxiliary hosted the annual “Hospital/Durand Manor” yard sale at the beginning of June and raised $1300! The money is used to purchase equipment not funded through the capital equipment process.
Busy weekend in Golden Golden was buzzing this weekend. The country tends to come alive every year on July 1, but I must say I was especially impressed to see how Golden came alive on Canada Day. The streets were filled with people, all the events I went to had a great turnout, and the town was filled with red and white. Different organizations all around town put together events for people of all ages. Bellies were filled at the Royal Canadian Legion and at the Spirit Square with delicious pancake breakfasts. Runners and walkers had their fun with the six-km Canada Dash. The Golden Museum had the kids busy all afternoon

with a petting zoo, potato sac races, historical displays, cake and many other games. The Golden Skate Park and Pump Track (which had its official grand opening on Canada Day), was full through most of the day with young bikers and skaters. Car enthusiasts had 9th Avenue North shut down for the Team Redline Car Show. People flocked to the Golden Municipal Campground later in the evening for the free concert and campfire event. And when it got dark people in town all found their own special place to watch the fireworks display. I had the pleasure of watching the bright lights from the patio of the Canyon’s Edge. Driving home I have never
seen so many vehicles out on the road in Golden. It resembled traffic. But the most exciting event of the weekend for many people had to be the Golden Secondary School graduation. On Friday evening the Grade 12s from GSS got dressed up and celebrated their monumental achievement. It’s a rare occasion in Golden when people get dressed up, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the beautiful dresses and stunning tuxes. But as much as I love fashion, and I do, the coolest part of the tradition had to be the cars. Prom used to be about showing up in identical limousines. The vintage cars that

the GSS grads were driving around in that night were far more exciting. And a large crowd of family and friends came out to see them. It was nice to see the whole community enjoy the weekend.

to town, and I recon it has the intensity three times worse than a prairie feed lot. It is virtually sickening, and C.P. Rail, though they vacuumed up all the easy to get at portions, left the remainder for the bears, deer, birds etc. to feed on, whilst the largest portion of that non recovered grain lies rotting in the water filled ditches, covered with a greenish brown scum. What if the C.P. management had to tolerate this foul intrusion right next to where they live? Rest assured that would never happen, the mess would be cleaned up quickly and they would look like the environmental heroes they pretend to be.
Smelly Situation I don’t know if you or any of your staff have stopped at the junction of Hartley Road and the Trans Canada Highway lately, particularly on a warm day. This area is very close in proximity to the train wreck, some months ago, and due to the current higher than normal amounts of ground water, coupled with the normal amount of rotting detritus, and huge amounts of spilled and rotting grain from several overturned rail carsthe ensuing odour is absolutely horrendous. For my part, I have to drive through that area on my way

Star EDITORIAL AND OPINION So, what of this ongoing fouling of the Moberly area? It’s an environmental disaster, and moreover what about Environment Canada, to force an appropriate cleanup of the area? Are they just another government toothless dog, after all, this is also the entry point to the provincially sanctioned Moberly Duck Marsh hiking trail. Do we just say “to hell with it”? The perpetrators of this, might take that opinion, but the residents in the area are fed up with the inactivity, so come on C.P., be a good corporate citizen, and finish the clean up properly. Busy times for the members of the Kicking Horse Country Chamber It’s been a busy six weeks with the KHCCC since our AGM On May 16 and I am pleased to share some highlights with you. Several of our members have had important successes. Mountainside Gardens had a fantastic radio campaign with spring gardening tips. Heather Mountain Lodge launched a Groupon sales campaign. The Golden Farmers Market expanded by adding a Saturday market in Spirit Square. Apostoles further enhanced
their building with a fresh new paint job. The College of the Rockies added a new covered timber frame walkway built by their own “Introduction to Trades” students. Kicking Horse Culture secured funding from the Government of Canada for Golden’s Live Kicks performing arts series. Personal Touch Hair & Body Day Spa opened a second location, expanding their services. We are fortunate to have these and many more vibrant, creative and dedicated members in our community, and
thus far in 2012 have added 27 new members. Following the results of our “How are we doing” survey to members in January the KHCCC intensified its focus on Policy and Advocacy. In recent weeks we have represented our members by attending and participating in every Town of Golden Open Council session, as well as the BC Chamber of Commerce AGM, Tourism Golden AGM, Golden Area Initiatives AGM, Golden & District Community Foundation AGM, The Gold-
en Women’s Resource Centre AGM, The Columbia River Treaty Consultation and Information Session, the “Community Plan for a Public System of Integrated Early Care and Learning” as hosted by the Golden Early Childhood Development Coalition, and the BC Hydro Regional Operational Update Meeting. Make no mistake we are fully committed to staying informed and identifying issues that affect our members. This commitment led us to address the Town of Golden’s
proposed bylaw for the long term borrowing of funds for the Bridge to Bridge Project. An issue of this importance meant we had to go to our membership to hear their thoughts and opinions. The survey has closed and we are now in the process of reviewing the data and comments. With a strong and ambitious strategic plan; the KHCCC will continue to grow, linking members with community and developing a robust business awareness in Kicking Horse Country.

Restocking British Columbia’s forest lands Dear Premier Clark: With the release today of the Forest Practices Board report entitled How much of British Columbia’s forest is not satisfactorily restocked, and what should be done about it?, British Columbians are reminded once again about the importance of healthy forest lands to our province’s prosperity. British Columbia is unique in that over 94 percent of the province is Crown Land, owned by its citizenry. As a result, the public must rely on government to be a good steward of that public land. Fifty-five million hectares of British Columbia is forest land, and the Minister of Forests is responsible for managing, protecting and conserving these forest lands not just for
today, but for future generations. The health of BC’s forests is under threat, not just from the Mountain Pine Beetle and wildfire, but from short-term or uninformed decision making by government. Over the last 11 years, the BC Liberals have implemented a very deliberate forest policy and today forestdependent communities are living with the effects. 40,000 forestry jobs have already been lost. Legislative changes were made that eliminated government’s responsibility to restock forest lands damaged by fires, windstorm, disease or pests. The government then cut the budget to the ministry of forests making it more and more difficult for forest professionals to monitor
the health of the forests. When forest professionals raised legitimate concerns about government actions, the forest minister of the day Pat Bell publicly ridiculed them. And now, as has been laid out by the Forest Practices Board (FPB) report, the government has attempted to change the goal posts by redefining established outcome markers such as Not Satisfactorily Restocked (NSR). Instead of taking meaningful action to ensure the forests for the future, two forest ministers have tried to fool the public with misleading numbers. The FPB has been clear that the public has an expectation that government would act broadly to provide the best outcomes on the public land base, and would make informed
decisions about how best to mitigate the effects of Mountain Pine Beetle on future timber supply. The FPB is calling on government to develop good public policy that meets the expectations of the public to protect our most valuable public asset, and states its belief that action on this issue must be taken quickly. I believe that British Columbia can once again have a forest industry that is a primary economic driver, but that will only happen if we make significant investments in our public lands. Columbia comes to Golden Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net The next Summer Kicks installment is coming to us all the way from Columbia. Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto, formed in the Carribbean Region of Columbia, are a traditional folkloric “cumbia” group. They have been active for several decades, playing their traditional rhythms with are a mixture of the Colombian Indigenous, Spanish and Afro-Colombian heritage. The gaiteros in their name means those who play the gaita flute, and San Jacinto is the town from which the group originated. Currently, the group is headed by four of the original members, Nico, Toño,
Juancho and Rafa Rodríguez, who perform with a new generation of gaiteros: Gabriel Torregrosa (son), Fredys Arrieta, Dionisio Yepes, Gualber Rodríguez and other young musicians who occasionally play with the group. From the 1950s onwards they have been touring Columbia, and elsewhere, and in November of 2007 they won a Latin Grammy for the best Folkloric Music album, for their 2006 album “Un Fuego de Sangre Pura: Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto from Columbia” (A Fire of Pure Blood). They will be playing the stage in the Spirit Square at 7 p.m. on Wednesday July 11, with opening band the Will Wardwell Trio.

Since they first formed in Saskatoon in 2004, rock band One Bad Son decided they didn’t want to fit into the two typical camps of modern rock: the slick commercial chart-toppers and the flavour-ofthe-month indie acts. Instead singer Shane Volk, drummer Kurt Dahl, guitarist Adam Hicks and bass player Adam Grant chose to be an honest to goodness rock ‘n’ roll band that occupies a world of its own. With an over the top live show drawing comparisons to bands like the Who, Zepelin and Guns n Roses, the band is finally getting some after years of developing the live performance, honing their songwriting and taking the road less travelled. “We’re outsiders and we always operate in our own bubble,” says Dahl of the band’s grassroots origins. “We don’t get things handed to us.” After building a strong following in Saskatoon, they earned themselves opening spots for Godsmack, Buckcherry and Default. In 2011
they decided to make the move to Vancouver, and signed a deal with 604 Records. A lucrative record deal, however, will not change the passion and work ethic of One Bad Son. Dahl insists that the band controls their own music and image. “We’re four guys who write all the songs together. We play our own instruments. We don’t play to backing tracks. We’ve lived together as a band. We dress ourselves,” said Dahl. “We do it ourselves.

Practice makes perfect Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net It was a day of training at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort as a helicopter was on sight to give rescue staff a chance to practice gondola rescues. Mike Rubenstein is the Safety Manager of Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. “We have multiple different systems we can use for gondola evacuation systems we can use,” Rubenstein said. He explained they can climb a tower and slide down a cable to the gondola before lowering people to the ground. However the group had the chance to use the helicopter to lower a rescuer to the top of a gondola to aid in the rescue. Rubenstein added the relationship between the Golden and District Search and Rescue and the resort has always been important. “Search and Rescue owns the gear for this rescue but since it is such a good relationship we are able to use it for gondola evacuations,” he said. The group has been working hard to take the time to practice this type of rescue to make sure it is safe for everyone involved. “The training is critical. How do you do something for real if you do not train with it. That is when accidents can occur,” Rubenstein said. He added the resort takes all factors into account before making the decision on when practices are going to happen on the hill. He also said this type of practice is helpful for difficult to reach areas on the mountain where both the terrain and weather come into play during a rescue. “We can choose to put people down on a road where there is a truck waiting as opposed to lowering someone to the terrain and then getting them out,” he said. Rubenstein added in his opinion the system is an amazing tool that helps lower the risk in certain situations where rescue time is an important factor.

It was a day filled with fun events as residents gathered to celebrate Canada Day. October 12, 1928 - June 27, 2012 George passed away peacefully at the Strathmore Hospital on Wednesday, June 27, 2012. He had lived at the Wheatland Lodge in Strathmore, and formerly in Golden, B.C. George is survived by his beloved wife Shirley (nee Imler); children Leonard (Alice) Le Cerf of Strathmore, Vernon (Laurie) Le Cerf of Prince George, David Le Cerf of Grande Prairie, and Linda (Darrell) Rogalsky of Grande Prairie; grandchildren Angela (Shane) Friesen, Alicia Dennys, Brian Le Cerf and fiancĂŠe Robyn, Kimberly (Bobby) Hobbs, Danielle (Stephen) Berresford, Marc Le Cerf, Heather Le Cerf, and Amy Le Cerf; sisters Alice (Ernie) Foord, Yvonne (Paul) Overgarrd, Genevieve Le Cerf, and Theresa (Robert) Zutz; sisters-in-law Elody Le Cerf and Peggy Le Cerf; and 12 great grandchildren. George was a loving husband and devoted grandfather. He worked as a saw filer in the lumber industry in Alberta and B.C. for over 30 years. After retirement he pursued wood working hobbies, which gave him much pleasure. He was also an avid huckleberry picker. Marguerite Irene Strain passed away at Durand Manor, Golden on 12 Tuesday, June 19th, 2012 at the age of 89 years. A Memorial Service will be held at the Chapel of Hindman Bowers Funeral Home, Golden on Saturday afternoon, July 21st, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with Mr. Gary Sulz officiating. Irene’s cremated remains will be interred with her husband in the Golden Community Cemetery following the service. Irene was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan on November 23, 1922 and had been a resident of the Golden area since she was nine years old. She was raised on the Doyle family homestead in the Blaeberry with ten brothers and sisters. She was a devoted and passionate bingo player. Irene also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She loved to dance with her husband George and they were quite a wonderful sight on the dance floor. Irene’s joys in life were her grandchildren and she loved them all. Irene was predeceased by her husband George in 1983. She is survived by four children: Bob (Sharron) Strain of Enderby, Lorna (George) Higginson of Golden, Vince (Ferne) Strain of Kamloops and Frank (Shelley) Strain of Golden; 18 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; two great, great grandchildren; brother Buster (Donna) Doyle of West Vancouver; sister-in-law Kay Doyle of Duncan as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Rae Barr Rae Barr passed away peacefully in Calgary, on June 21. Grandma Rae Barr was larger than life. Everyone who knew her was touched by her love of life and her kindness. She was an amazing powerhouse of energy who cheered people up when she was around. Rae had a great sense of humour and her laughter ďŹ lled the room. Her smile was contagious. With Grandma Rae, everyone was welcome to her home and there was always room and food for more. She had a huge heart and never gave up on anyone. She was always giving and never receiving. She was truly one of the greatest volunteers of all time. She never said no to anyone asking for help. Always an entertainer, Grandma was the life of the party and the last one to leave. She played her guitar until her ďŹ ngers bled. Many a sing songs were led by Grandma‌she always had a way of bringing people together whether it was on the ball ďŹ eld, golf course or curling rink; at family reunions and parties, or her favourite place on earth‌the arena. Grandma had many interests and hobbies over the years, but her greatest passion was her grandchildren, Cody, Andie, Jake, and Dillon. Ever present, no matter when or where, she was there to cheer them on. She was their greatest fan, and she proved this by ying all over the world to give her support. Grandma passed this support onto all of her grandchildren’s teammates and as a result, they all called her Grandma and they will miss her deeply too. Grandma touched a lot of lives and because of this; no one had more friends than her. A true sign of what she had to oer. A Steele inspector comes to take care of the wild west days The first duty that the Force performed in British Columbia was that of protecting Canadian Pacific Railway property and interests during the construction of the railway in 1884, 1885 and 1886. Under the command of Inspector Sam Steele, a small party of police kept in check the lawless elements of that time. Until June 1885, Steele’s Headquarters, consisting of a force of eight men, was at Golden. In 1884 a man named Baird was murdered near Golden and was robbed of over $4,000. Baird was murdered 29 miles from the line of the railway, thus being outside each side of the track.
In the summer of 1885, as construction of the railway proceeded westwards, the NWMP Headquarters in BC was moved to Beaver Creek and Golden was left with a detachment of three men and one horse. On New Year’s Eve, 1885, Cst. William Ross died while on duty. He and Cst. Ernest L. Percival set out to walk from Golden City to the Third Siding - a CPR installation west of the town. Constable Percival arrived at the Third Siding at 2:30 a.m. and reported that Cst. Ross had not been able to walk any longer and was approximately five miles from the Third Siding.
Cst.Percival built a fire for Cst. Ross prior to leaving him. A search party found Constable Ross badly frozen and barely alive. He died a short time later. Cst. Ross was originally buried in the pioneer cemetery in Golden; however, his remains were moved to another location in Golden in 1954 when they were located by Cst. White. Cst. Ross’ grave marker was moved to the Calgary Heritage Park in 1964. Cst. Ross had engaged with the NWMP on April 12, 1882 in Toronto, Ontario. Late in 1886, the NWMP were withdrawn from BC. In June, 1887, Superintendent Steele and “D” Division at Fort MacLeod
were again sent to the Kootenay District of BC to restore peace between the natives and settlers of that region. At the time, there were two divisions located at Fort MacLeod - “D” and “H” Divisions. Prior to leaving for the Golden area, men were hired, discharged and transferred between the two divisions, so the names of all of the men who came to the area is not known. The Division arrived at Golden on June 28 and pitched camp on the left bank of the Kicking Horse River, the camp being connected to the town by a wooden bridge. Shortly after the arrival of the Division at Golden, the steamer “Duchess”,
navigating the Columbia Lakes, was hired by the Police to ship supplies to the Kootenay; however, the boat capsized and very little was recovered. Steele engaged another small steamer belonging to J.C. Hayes, a merchant in Golden, at the usual rates of freight, viz., one dollar per hundred. During the remainder of the Division’s stay in Golden, Steele employed the men and teams in hauling stores to the landing, getting the new saddles put together and oiled, branding and numbering the remounts, and various other duties in preparation for the trip to the Kootenay. Rocky Mountain Alliance Church announces new pastor Elders Board Rocky Mountain Alliance Church The Rocky Mountain Alliance Church welcomes Pastor Tom Fehr, his wife, Audrey, and their 17 year old son, Levi to Golden. Fehr has been appointed as the senior pastor beginning on July 1, 2012. The Fehr family is coming from Cold Lake, AB, where they have raised three sons and lived for the past 25 years. Fehr served as lead pastor of Cold Lake’s Grand Centre Alliance Church for 18 years. He will be replacing Joe Rioux, who most remember as “Pastor Joe.” After having served for 10 years in Golden, Pastor Joe was called in August, 2011 to serve as senior pastor of the Kentwood Alliance Church in Red Deer, AB. In the interim, the Church has been served by Pastor Ed Drewlo, of Prince George, BC who now specializes in transitional ministries for churches between pastors. Drewlo led the church through the Sunday services, through a focus on prayer, and through guiding the pastoral search process. A Search Team from the church was quickly led to recommend “Pastor Tom.” The Fehr family arrived in Golden June 30 and are looking forward to living in this community and serving the church. Fehr loves the “vision and heartbeat of Rocky Mountain Alliance Church” which is a “passion to lead people into a life changing relationship with Jesus Christ.”
17th, the Division headed for the Kootenay. Staff Sergeants Pane and Mercer and eight constables, most of whom were sick, were left behind in Golden. During the Division’s twelve month stay in the Kootenay, Golden continued to be the shipping point for supplies to the police post in the Kootenay. In 1888, a road was under construction between Golden and the post at Kootenay. It was felt that this road would greatly facilitate communications, as previously the river and the packtrail were the only means of travel and freighting. In August 1888, the

Division left the district and returned to Fort MacLeod in the NWT. It was not until 1919, in the re-organization following World War I, that the present “E” Division, BC was created; its headquarters at Vancouver had a strength of 211 men for the Division.

Golden Cycling Club opens new trail Golden Cycling Club submitted The Golden Cycling Club (GCC) has recently completed the ‘Take It Easy’ trail which runs along the west side of the Columbia River. This trail is approximately 3 km long and can be accessed either near the beginning of the ‘CBT Mainline’ trail or off Elk Road. One of the more interesting aspects of this trail is the new vantage of the Columbia River. Because it runs high along the bank, you are looking down on the river with Golden and the distant Rockies in the background. While built by cyclists to further promote our sport, GCC encourages other non-motorized users to use this trail.
Originally conceived as a relatively gentle ride, it has morphed into something that is somewhat more challenging. With the occasional steep drop along the Columbia, the trail demands users to be aware of their surroundings. The name no longer entirely reflects its tricky nature; instead it carries a cautionary suggestion! The trail was started with funding from the Resort Municipality Initiative last fall and completed this spring with the help of the Ministry of Natural Resource Operations. GCC is in the process of creating a loop of the ‘CBT Mainline’ trail and this trail is part of the first phase of this project. GCC expects to complete the second phase this fall with another trail which is currently being constructed. The third and final phase is planned in 2013.
