Golden Ears Bridge tolls going up Part of annual cost of living increase by Ph i l M e lnych uk staff reporter

Tolls for the Golden Ears Bridge, reduced last year to encourage more usage, are now set to rise. On July 15, tolls for cars with transponders go up a nickel, while for cars without transponders go up a dime. The increases are scheduled annually to keep up with the cost of living, and raises the one-way charge for a transponder-equipped vehicle to $2.95. Tolls for vehicles without transponders go from $4.10 to $4.20. When it comes to numbers, however, TransLink is probably more focused on whether the number of trips across the bridge is meeting projections. Money raised by the tolls in 2011 jumped by 14 per cent compared to the year before, to $33.7 million, according to TransLink’s Drew Snider. See Tolls, p8

the Fisheries Act was in 1970, while clauses dealing with habitat protection were added in 1986. The new bill removes protection from “harmful alteration, disruption destruction” of fish habitat, and instead says no one can cause “serious harm” to native, recreational or commercial fisheries. Ashfield said over the years the act has expanded beyond that of just protecting fisheries. “I think we have to come back to our core mandate and that’s fisheries and fish and that’s what we’re proposing with these
changes.” While the law defines the three types of fisheries, regulations and policies still have to be set following consultation with provinces, cities and environmental groups over the next few months. The new law will allow the ministry to partner with conservation groups, something not possible under the existing legislation, he pointed out. “We’ve heard from a lot of municipalities talking about the fact they can’t clean their drainage ditches. Break in rain eases Fraser River levels But more precipitation forecast, river to rise again
Flood watch • The District of Maple Ridge will be updating information on its website under “Flood Watch on the Fraser.” Also follow the district on Twitter @yourmapleridge and #FraserMR. The sandbagging depot remains open at Albion Flats Landscaping Supply and will remain open 24 hours a day until further notice. The depot is located at Albion Flats Landscape Supply, 23549 Lougheed Highway, Maple Ridge. by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter The Fraser River is expected to drop over the next week days, but the threat of a flood has yet to abate in its lower reaches as rainfall and snowmelt make their way downstream. Dave Campbell, head of the B.C. River Forecast Centre, said a pulse of water from weekend rains is expected to cause the lower Fraser River to rise again by this weekend. The Mission river gauge is expected to decline, then climb again to between six and 6.6 metres by Saturday. Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist said Monday a low-pressure system is expected to move east to Alberta Tuesday, easing rainfall in most of the B.C. Interior, except for the southeast corner. Typically it takes six days for water from rain and snowmelt in the upper Fraser headwaters to travel down to the Fraser Valley. The District of Maple Ridge and City of Pitt Meadows are closely monitoring conditions along the river and weather and are conducting daily dike inspections.

Port Haney Wharf remains open, but the boat mooring ramp is closed. Both municipalities have activated their emergency operations centres, which will remain active until rivers have receded to safe levels. “We asking people to use extreme caution around water sources and obey cautionary signage and emergency personnel,” said Lorna Jones, with the City of Pitt Meadows.
‘It should make it easier’ Minister from front “It doesn’t quite frankly make a lot of sense.” He referred to a swale (shallow ditch) that one councillor showed him that hadn’t been cleaned in two years. “It should make it a lot easier for the municipalities to do their business, at the same time recognizing we’re not walking away carte blanche,” from protecting fisheries. Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters wasn’t sure of how the new Fisheries Act will affect the city. “It’s my understanding, it will make it easier for us to clean the ditches,” she said. Contacted after the speech, Fisheries and Oceans Canada couldn’t explain by deadline the ditch-cleaning requirements under the old or new acts. Ashfield said municipal laws that protect local streams, requiring setbacks along the shorelines, won’t be affected by the new Fisheries Act. “That’s perfectly within their purview. We’re not going to jeopardize that.” He also hopes to form agreements with provinces so their laws can replace some of what was covered by the Fisheries Act. “They would be the lead. It would eliminate a whole level of bureaucracy and red tape you have to go through to get some of
Eight homes outside Pitt Meadows dike protection system were issued evacuation alerts. In Maple Ridge, 43 homes on the unprotected section of Wharf Street in Hammond were put on an “evacuation alert” Friday. That remains in place. A townhouse complex on Kanaka Street was sandbagged as a precaution. An intense thunder-
these projects done.” Ashfield said he made the stop to “dispel some of the rumours” that are taking place. “Once people realize what we’re doing, they’ll understand it’s probably better for the fisheries overall.” In his speech, Ashfield said the “sensible” approach will minimize the restrictions on “routine, everyday activities” that have little to do with fisheries productivity. He said under the old act, farmers were prevented from clearing irrigation channels, municipalities were delayed in repairing bridge supports and drainage ditches and cottage owners can’t keep up their properties, ‘’all because of the existing rules.” The new act makes a distinction between vital waters and “unproductive bodies” of water such as manmade ditches, reservoirs and irrigation channels. Ashfield also said it will allow the government to focus on protecting fisheries and set new, clear guidelines for projects near water and establish standards for fish passage. It makes sense to minimize or eliminate restrictions on every day activities that pose “little to no threat,” while maintaining protection for fisheries, he added. His speech also noted that conservation groups have also said there’s a better way to protect the environment.
storm Saturday evening raised the level of the Kanaka Creek estuary. The Port Haney Wharf remains open to the public, however the boat mooring ramp is closed due to the high river levels and fast flowing water. Inspections are being conducted daily. “Water levels on the Fraser River and tributaries remain very
‘Was there a problem?’ While Fisheries Minister Keith Ashfield said the new Fisheries Act will help farmers and cities by allowing easier cleaning of ditches, Geoff Clayton didn’t know there was a problem under the old act. Clayton, of the Alouette River Management Society, said a system was worked out 15 years ago in Maple Ridge, in which any ditch cleaning would be done in the dry season, minimizing any impact on streams that are connected. When the work begins, the ditches are blocked at one end, to allow the fish to escape out the other, then cleaning begins. When the job is done, the ditch is unblocked and water and fish flow resumes. “The Fisheries Act has never appeared to very seriously compromise the farming … in the region.” Clayton said he can’t think of one instance where Fisheries Act regulations affected ditch cleaning. However, Leo Captein with the Pitt Meadows Farmers Institute, said the current act is “unworkable.” Any cleaning of main ditches, such as Katzie Slough or Cranberry Slough, requires a two-year study, which can cost the municipality up to $100,000 to identify what fish are in the water before any work begins. “So that is actually unworkable.” And that’s required any time cleaning is required. “So that is officially how it is,” Captein said. That can lead to reduced water available for irrigation, as well as interfere with drainage.
high and water flows are fast,” said Fred Armstrong, with the District of Maple Ridge. Armstrong also urged people to stay away from the rushing water. “If somebody fell into the water, they would be swept away very quickly.,” Although water levels are dropping, Armstrong added the district will not be rescinding the evacuation alerts. “To rescind it for a couple of days and potentially have to put it back in, is probably not a good idea.” – with files from Tom Fletcher
As a result, he had to put a new water-pump system on to his flower farm. He hasn’t seen the changes to the Fisheries Act, “but in that way, it should be nice.” He pointed out as long as you don’t clean an entire ditch, the fish will just avoid the area that’s being worked on. Farmers can clean the smaller, roadside ditches without those studies. Ditches are also an issue for Baldev Dhuga, who has a berry farm in Pitt Meadows. He says they are now filling up with grass and “the city is doing nothing.” Pitt Meadows did clean it 20 year ago, he said, but haven’t since. For NDP supporter Bob Goos, who’s been at the recent protests in front of MP Randy Kamp’s office over the Fisheries Act, the definition of what is a ditch and what is a fish-bearing stream is a worry. “The concern is, what’s defined as a ditch? “The language is pretty loose,” he said, adding the new definitions could threaten small feeder streams. He cited Spencer Creek which flows through Albion flats. “That’s the issue, if suddenly we wanted to develop it.” He added that problems concerning restrictions on working in ditches could be a result of over-zealous enforcement rather than the act itself. Fisheries and Oceans Canada didn’t provide an explanation of general ditch-cleaning regulations, but said that during emergencies, it can give authorization for flood protection work and can respond quickly. – by Phil Melnychuk

B.C. Coroner will investigate Mitchell shooting Stories by Monisha Martins staff reporter The B.C. Coroners Service will investigate the death of Angus David Mitchell, who was shot by police in Maple Ridge in May. Mitchell, 26, died at Royal Columbian Hospital on May 30, hours after being surrounded by police near 132nd Avenue, where gun Mitchell battle with the RCMP’s emergency response team took place prior to his arrest. Police tried to talk Mitchell out of his van, but he would not cooperate. He was killed a few
hours after RCMP issued a warning, asking the public to be on the lookout for his green Ford Aerostar. Mitchell was wanted by police for shooting his former landlord in Burnaby and was also a person of interest in the fatal shooting of two people at a Burnaby sushi restaurant. The B.C. Coroners Service is mandated to hold an inquest into the death of a person who dies while detained by or in the custody of a peace officer. The chief coroner has determined that the circumstances of Mitchell’s death and issues that have been raised
Pratt back in prison The young man who dragged a Maple Ridge gas station attendant to his death is back in prison after violating parole conditions for the third time. Darnell Darcy Pratt is reported to have breached a condition of his statutory release in Victoria on Vancouver Island, a Pratt month after he was released from the maximum-security Kent Institution in Agassiz. Pratt was 16 in March 2005, when he struck and killed 24-year-old gas station attendant Grant De Patie in a stolen car while fleeing an Esso station on Dewdney Trunk Road in Maple Ridge without paying for gas. De Patie’s family was notified about Pratt’s violation Monday morning. “It’s no surprise to us and probably no surprise to anyone else,” said De Patie’s father Doug. By law, most federal inmates are automatically released after serving two-thirds of their sentence. Pratt’s sentence officially ends July 22. “Come July 22, he’ll be out without any supervision,” Doug De
Patie added. “He is bound and determined to take the wrong road. He’s got his course set in his own mind. Mr. Pratt is his own worst enemy. He’s like a runaway train: an accident waiting to happen.” Pratt was released twice before and violated parole conditions within days on both occasions. The 22-year-old failed to return to Victoria halfway house he was staying at two days after his last statutory release in November. Police issued a Canadawide warrant for his arrest and he surrendered himself to police after two weeks. Pratt was first granted statutory release in June 2010, but violated curfew just two days after he was paroled to a Kamloops halfway house. Originally charged with second-degree murder, Pratt pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced in May 2006 as an adult to nine years minus time served, for a total of seven years and three months in prison.

TransLink tokenism TransLink’s board doesn’t need more directors drinking from the same bath water. It needs whistle-blowers and critics, transit users and truckers to put some reality into the way Lower Mainland road and transit infrastructure are funded. Adding directors from the Mayor’s Council to the TransLink board (which they voted against) would be no more than tokenism and the provincial government needs to do two things: • One, acknowledge that it is calling the shots and stop pretending that TransLink, with its limited funding options, is any more than a cringing lap dog — not to mention a convenient scapegoat (sort of like school boards); • Two, open up TransLink board meetings to the public. What taxpayers need to see is more open debate on the how’s and why’s of TransLink decisionmaking — such as how it can justify the now rejected 12.5 per cent fare increase and why bureaucrats need hefty bonuses for doing their jobs. It may seem harsh to pick on TransLink, but the funding stalemate between the mayors’ council and the board is a sign of trouble. Martin Crilly, the TransLink commissioner, has already said the authority lags behind other cities in productivity; and the province and the mayors hope an audit can find a hidden source of cash. Could some of these problems be fixed with an improved funding model and a new system of open governance? No doubt. Instead, the province gives us an easy fix with little hope of succeeding. Further, there’s legitimate concern that once representatives from the mayors’ council begin attending meetings — earning $60,000 a year for their efforts — they’ll stop representing the taxpayers and start swilling the grey water, making excuses instead of holding the authority accountable. For that much money, TransLink could find numerous people with intimate knowledge of Metro Vancouver’s transportation troubles who could enliven those TransLink board meetings and provide some balance. We have zero confidence that will happen just as we have zero confidence co-opting a couple of Metro Vancouver mayors would help the Lower Mainland’s long-suffering commuters. – Black Press

‘Poverty’ declines, nobody notices VICTORIA – You probably didn’t hear this on TV, the percentage of Canadians deemed “low income” went down slightly in 2010, according to the latest Statistics Canada analysis. This information was delivered in the B.C. Views annual “Income of Tom Fletcher Canadians” report last week. The share of people who fall below the federal Low-Income Cut-Off (LICO) went from 9.5 per cent to 9.0. The CBC couldn’t bring itself to admit any actual improvement, reporting on its website that the number of people with “low income” was about three million, “virtually unchanged from 2009.” Other media outlets followed the unwritten rule that nothing remotely positive must be presented as news, particularly if it reflects positively on a right-wing government. (Plus, they had the Montreal body-parts case to update each day.) This information likely won’t have any effect on the political discussion about “poverty” in B.C. The LICO survey will continue to be used as a measure of absolute poverty, despite the fact that it isn’t. It’s a relative measure that will always designate the same share of people at the low end of the scale. B.C. Stats, the provincial equivalent of the federal agency, explained this problem in a special report last year. “To illustrate,” the report said, “take
a hypothetical future Canada where every citizen earns no less than $100,000 (and assume there has not been rampant inflation in the meantime, such that buying power is not dissimilar to what exists today) and millionaires are common. “In that kind of Canada, those at the low end of the income scale (that is, those earning ‘merely’ $100,000) would be considered poor if LICOs were used as a measure of poverty.” Math aside, that’s the alleged “poverty line” routinely cited by the usual media authorities, like B.C. Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair. Sinclair campaigned for years to get the B.C. government to raise the minimum wage from $8 to $10 an hour. They did, in three increments, and on May 1 it increased to $10.25 an hour. As soon as the series of three increases was announced last November, Sinclair called a news conference to announce it’s not enough. To get to the LICO level, the minimum wage should be $11.50 an hour, Sinclair said. Of course, if B.C. businesses ponied up for that, the goalposts would shift again and the same proportion of “poverty” would magically still exist. The B.C. NDP government-in-waiting continues to demand an “action plan” on poverty, with annual goals. All the progressive provinces have one, which I guess is why poverty is all but eradicated in enlightened places like Manitoba. There are signs of the reality behind this political smokescreen. Here’s one. For what may be the first time in history, we now have a North American
society where one of the most reliable indicators of poverty is obesity. This often gets explained away with a popular theory that poor people are somehow forced to eat fast food and drink pop because they can’t afford healthy food. People who advance this theory presumably don’t do much grocery shopping. There are plenty of processed, sugary, fat-laden choices at the supermarket, too. But there is also whole wheat bread, rice and fresh or frozen vegetables that are as cheap as anywhere in the world.
“This often gets explained away with a popular theory that poor people are somehow forced to eat fast food and drink pop because they can’t afford healthy food.” Given basic cooking skills and some effort, it’s easy to demonstrate which diet is cheaper, as well as healthier. Most immigrants know this. Which diet you choose isn’t a function of money, but rather one of education and selfdiscipline. There is genuine poverty in our society. One of the things that’s needed is a useful way to define it. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com (tfletcher@blackpress.ca).

Re: Country Fest is OK with moving (The News, June 20). I am truly perplexed as to why council is considering more shopping centres in Maple Ridge. Wal-Mart is being built in Mission, and another is just over the bridge in Port Coquitlam. Zellers will be a Target soon. We have more grocery stores than you can shake a stick at, and fast food outlets of every variety. Cinemas, craft stores, clothing stores, do-it-yourself stores, car repair garages, leisure centres, and salons for every part of your body, it’s all here. And the Kwantlen reserve is being developed as retail. A land swap? Why is this being considered? If the land is in the ALR, it cannot be developed. Our fairgrounds, which, are in a pastoral area, give the true feel of a country fair. Please, council, think long and hard about considering even more retail development. CATHERINE WARD MAPLE RIDGE
online comments • Jackie Chow · Maple Ridge, British Columbia: Re: One-acre lots planned for east Maple Ridge (mapleridgenews.com). Sounds pretty crazy to me. City water all the way out there? Don’t count on this kind of development to pay for itself. Higher servicing cost for these kinds of developments is costing us all. I think the district should look at cost and benefits, over the long term. If the taxes don’t cover the cost of servicing, these kinds of developments should not be approved, especially since it’s going to be a subsidy for the more affluent among us.
Re: A sensible and humane decision (Health Care, June 22). I read, with much interest, what former Maple Ridge family physician Dr. Marco Terwiel had to say regarding the recent B.C. Supreme Court decision regarding Gloria Taylor’s request to have the right to “doctor assisted suicide,” should she so desire. Justice Lynn Smith, in a blatant example of judicial activism, is attempting to subvert
Canadian Parliament and the Supreme Court of Canada, both of which oppose this. Sue Rodriguez (October 1993) was turned down by Canada’s highest court, and Bill C-384 (April 2010) was defeated 228-59 by Canadian Parliament. Dr. Terwiel rambled on about a woman in her 80s who he painted as a fanatic who prayed too much, then he switched to Taylor, who he apparently admires As with Ms. Rodriguez, Ms.
Taylor suffers from ALS. Dr. Terwiel admits that if it was legal, he would have given in to former patients who “begged” him to put an end to their incredible suffering. Dr. Terwiel lamented that he was not trained to make the last stage of his patients’ lives as pain-free and comfortable as possible. And, I thought, that is exactly what caring family, doctors who take the Hippocratic Oath seriously, coupled with modern pain medication, can ef-
fectively do. Palliative care is all about the above, not about killing patients. I think that, like any abortionist, like-minded doctors would be better to practice veterinary medicine, where they are less likely to contribute to a misguided secular humanism that has led many western countries into the death culture we Canadians find ourselves immersed in today. RICHARD WHALEN MAPLE RIDGE
Just when you thought lower Jackson Farm was safe EDITOR, THE NEWS:
Once again, Jackson Farm is under threat of succumbing to development. Just when you thought it was saved (Upper Jackson Farm to be developed, to preserve Lower Jackson Farm as a park), there is a proposal to re-zone the agricultural lot on the southeast corner of 102 Avenue and 244 Street. If the proposal goes through as is, there will be 30 new houses on the cur-
rent lot, and 1.5 acres of lower Jackson Farm (the park) will become a bioswale (to divert water away from the development). It seems to me that this deal would favour the developer. If the lot were left as agricultural, drainage wouldn’t be an issue. As a potential development (at this site) gets larger, the drainage issue becomes larger, therefore it should be the developers
responsibility to deal with their own drainage issue if they want 30 units. My family and friends hope this amendment is voted down and the lot remains agricultural for the sake of lower Jackson Farm and to slow densification in the Albion area until school capacity catches up a little. The people of Maple Ridge were led to believe their park was safe from encroaching development,
but now it may be partially developed (if you call a bioswale developed) and the view to the west altered in a negative way. The District of Maple Ridge made a wise decision, when it decided to save lower Jackson Farm for future generations to enjoy. Let’s hope the right decision is made now, and this proposal is voted down. SEAN ORCUTT MAPLE RIDGE

The woman leading the NDP in Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows next election took nothing for granted in winning that nomination, and will take nothing for granted in the May 2013 B.C. election, either. Elizabeth Rosenau narrowly defeated Korleen Carreras Sunday in the meeting in St. Andrew’s Haney United Church in Maple Ridge. “It was hotly contested, right to the last
minute. We didn’t let our guard down for a minute,” Rosenau said Monday. She added that Carerras, who works for the B.C. Government and Service Employees Union, was a strong, well-organized opponent and that the membership kept both candidates on their toes, with few tipping their hand as to how they’d vote and seeming to request candidates to impress them in order to earn their support. “It was almost like an election. The excitement was incredible,” Rosenau said. She added that the composition of the crowd was also encour-
aging, with a mix of old and young. “In the past, it was an aging group of people who’d been there a long time.” Rosenau said 122 people were registered to vote in the nomination, out of a membership of 300. But she wouldn’t give the exact number of who supported her or Carreras because of the attempt to maintain unity in the membership. “I was told not to tell you.” Craig Speirs, president of the Maple RidgePitt Meadows constituency association, said “that’s just something we don’t like to put out.
That’s just something we decided not to do, so we won’t. That’s just how it works.” Rosenau ran for the federal NDP nomination in the last federal election, losing out to Speirs. She added, if her party forms government, she intends to speak up and bring more resources to Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows. Rosenau will replace Michael Sather, who resigns next year. Between 150 and 200 people showed up at the meeting, said Speirs. “I was really impressed, such a great vibe in the hall. It was packed. We had to keep bringing out chairs.”
Bridge usage up 12 per cent in first quarter Tolls from front However, that’s still 11 per cent below projections for that year. Snider added that last year, there were just fewer than 10 million crossings of the Golden Ears Bridge, also a jump of about 12 per cent. “The awareness plan that we had has definite-
ly helped getting people on to the bridge,” Snider said Friday. That campaign involved advertising and placing door hangars on residences near the bridge. And over the 35-year payback period of the public-private partnership, the bridge will pay
for itself, said Snider. TransLink last year also tried giving fare discounts for evening and weekend use of the bridge, but that didn’t bring in any extra dollars. Usage of the Golden Ears Bridge, completed in 2009 and joining Langley and Surrey to Pitt

Meadows and Maple Ridge, could increase after this year, once the Port Mann Bridge opens. That structure will also be tolled. In the first three months of this year alone, 2.4 million crossings took place, which is also up 12 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Let’s Celebrate With Our 1st
Celebrations planned for Canada Day staff reporter Canada turns 145 years old this Sunday, and there will be plenty of festivities in both Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows for local residents who want to celebrate. This year, the District of Maple Ridge will not only be celebrating Canada’s 145th birthday, but Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee, commemorating 60 years on the throne by Canada’s official head of state. The party will be tak-
ing place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Memorial Peace Park downtown, with the official ceremonies beginning at 12:30 p.m. The event will include live entertainment, singing, dancing, activities, food and fun, continuing throughout the day. A 28-year-old woman was arrested Friday in Pitt Meadows after she crashed a pickup truck while trying to escape from police. A police officer spotted the pickup truck on 124 Avenue near Harris Road around 9:15 p.m. When the officer turned on his lights and siren, the driver acceler-
Six impaired drivers were taken off the roads this past weekend. All of them received immediate, 90-day driving prohibitions and had their vehicles impounded for 30 days. A 21-year-old Pitt Meadows woman was stopped just after 2 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Meadow Vale shopping mall in Pitt Meadows. She provided breath samples into two roadside screening devices, and both produced ‘fail’ readings. On Sunday, three more drivers were caught for drinking drunk. A 20-year-old Langley man, and a 19-year-old Maple Ridge man both blew ‘fail’ readings, while a 27-yearold Surrey man refused to provide samples of his breath. On Monday, an 18-year-old Maple Ridge man and a 21-year-old Pitt Meadows man also received suspensions.
Bothersome bear trapped in Albion They’ve caught at least one of the bears that’s been bugging residents in south Albion. Sunday evening a bumbling bruin walked into the trap set near Elizabeth Taylor’s home on 100B Avenue. She called the conservation officer, who told her that many bears are in the area and that the bear would be relocated because it hadn’t been caught previously. “Too bad we do not have a bylaw for the home owners who leave garbage out leading to the unnecessary

A large quantity of illegal drugs was seized from a house in Maple Ridge last week. Ridge Meadows RCMP’s Street Enforcement Unit executed a search warrant at the property in the 22300 block of St. Anne Avenue Thursday around 2 p.m. Six people were arrested inside the house and a significant street level quantity of what is believed to be crack cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and psilocybin, or magic mushrooms, were located and seized. Other items associated to the sale of illegal drugs, including a large sum of money, were also seized. “This is a substantial case regarding the distribution of illegal drugs,” said Insp. Dave Fleugel. “Two of the people arrested are very well known to Ridge Meadows RCMP. We are still putting together the details that will be presented to the courts in the near future.”

Eric Langton gets playground funding
Parents and students at Eric Langton elementary School got some unexpected good news Thursday, as the provincial government announced funding to help upgrade playgrounds at 80 elementary school across the province. The downtown Maple Ridge school was awarded $50,000 towards a new playground, while Albion elementary was given $25,000 for upgrades to its playground. Earlier this year, the playground used by Eric Langton’s primary students had to be boarded up after it was repeatedly vandalized.

Lilly Dickson/contributed
From a distance, the owl looked dead. He was hanging, lifeless, above the surging Alouette River, where it whirled into Davison’s Pool with his wings spread out limp. As Lilly Dickson peered through the pelting rain on Friday, she spotted a man in the branches above the bird. When Dickson looked closer, she realized the raptor was tangled in
fishing line. “It was unbelievable,” she says. “He was exhausted. His feet were all wrapped up. He probably tried to fly and ended up getting more caught.” Luckily, a rescue was already underway when Dickson spotted the owl. A tree climber from B.C. Plant Health Care cut branches to lower the owl into the net of a volunteer from the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society in Delta. The volunteer bundled the owl in a blanket and drove it to the rehabili-
tation centre, where he remains. Rob Hope, the head bird supervisor, reports the mature owl is doing “remarkably” well. Staff at the centre cut 60 grams of fishing gear – five lures, 20 yards of line and a bobber – off the bird, who weighs 760 grams. Hope recommends fishermen who get their lines caught in trees should try to get most of it back, if possible. The owl, older than two years, should be released within a few weeks.

t doesn’t matter whether you barbecue year-round, or put the barbecue away for the winter, it’s always a good idea to clean it thoroughly once or twice a year. Take a look these tips to make the job easier: What you will need: a steel putty knife; a heavy duty vacuum; a brass bristle barbecue brush; plus cleaning supplies, including a degreaser for heavy grime; a glass cleaner with ammonia for exterior cleaning; and stainless steel cleaner/polish for finishing touches. First step: Attach your barbecue to the propane tank or natural gas connection. Use a mixture of dish soap and warm water to coat all connections to test for leaks – any bubbling at connections means there is a leak. Stop everything and consult your local barbecue dealer for more help. If your barbecue passes the leak test, remove the grids and heat medium. If possible, remove the burners, inspect them for damage and blockages – a piece of wire with some cloth on the end is an excellent way to clear blockages from the burner. Clean: re-install the burners, heat media, and cooking grids. Light your barbecue and let it heat up to 200 degrees F.

Turn everything off and let it cool until it is just warm to the touch. Brush the grids thoroughly on both top and bottom. Remove the grids and set aside. Use your grill brush to remove any debris on the heat media, remove them to expose the burners and cook box. Using your putty knife, scrape the sides of the cook box to remove any caked-on debris. If your barbecue has a removable grease tray, take it out with the debris. If you have a closed-bottom cook box, use your heavy duty vacuum to clean up all the loose ash and debris in the cook box. Quick tip: Re-install the grease tray, heat medium, and cooking grids. Heat your barbecue to at least 400 F and season your cooking grids with olive or grapeseed oil. This will protect your cooking grids and can prevent food from sticking. Take a minute to inspect your barbecue’s exterior for any other damage and follow the above process to clean your side burner as well. Check wheels and casters for any damage. Whether your barbecue is brand new or older than your children and pets, a semiannual cleaning is highly recommended to ensure years of trouble free use. – METRO CREATIVE SERVICES

Healthy Living Preventing cavities C
avities are a problem for adults and children alike. Some people seem more susceptible to cavities than others, and the pH of the mouth and other factors may play a role in the formation of cavities. The number of dental cavities increases with age. Dental decay remains the most prevalent chronic disease in both children and adults, even though it is largely preventable. Although it may seem like children who love sugar would have the highest rate of cavities, Canadian oral health statistics indicate that 96 percent of adults have them. What causes a cavity? Bacteria is the main culprit behind cavities. Bacteria migrate into the mouth and are constantly present on the gums, teeth and tongue. While most oral bacteria are not harmful, certain types can prove troublesome. Bacteria attach to the enamel of the teeth and eventually start to form a colony. Proteins present in saliva mix with the bacteria, which then forms a hard layer on the tooth known as plaque. Sugar plays a role in the process because the bacteria use sugar as a food source. The sugar also helps them stick to the tooth surface, making it more difficult for bacteria to be cleared away with saliva. As bacteria eat the sugar, they produce waste, which is acidic. Over time, this acid can wear away at the tough enamel on teeth, making it porous. These holes can become bigger, eventually forming what is known as a cavity.
It may take a while before you realize you have a cavity because the enamel of the tooth doesn’t have nerve fibers. But once the cavity becomes large enough to expose the sensitive dentin within, pain ensues. Preventing cavities Cavities can be largely prevented by brushing and flossing regularly to remove extra bacteria from the teeth, and preventing them from attaching and building up on the teeth. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings also play a preventative role. Dentists have equipment that can effectively clean teeth in areas that can sometimes be difficult to keep clean with just manual brushing. High susceptibility to cavities Medications and biology can affect the pH of a person’s mouth and contribute to the formation of dental caries. When pH drops, demineralization of the tooth enamel occurs and cavities form. Some forms of bacteria contribute to tooth decay more than others. As mentioned, sugar feeds bacteria growth. Research has found that it’s not often the amount of sugar eaten at a given time, but the frequency of sugar exposure that can lead to cavities. Sucrose, it seems, is bacteria’s preferred energy source. Saliva production is important for keeping bacteria at bay. Individuals who produce less bacteria, due to medication or their physical history, may be more susceptible to cavities. – METRO CREATIVE SERVICES

or Rayne Beveridge, it was all about dreaming big. The Bergthorson Academy of Musical Arts instructor had no idea if he’d be successful, but was determined to try and assemble Maple Ridge’s first orchestra. “I really wanted to give members of the community and my students the opportunity to do something unique and spectacular,” Beveridge says as he prepares for the orchestra debut at the ACT on Saturday. The Bergthorson academy is partnering with the arts council to stage Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operetta Iolanthe, a topsyturvy love story involving fairies and senators. Conducted by Beveridge, the 13-member orchestra – featuring six violins, two cellos, two flutes, a saxophone, a clarinet, and a trumpet – will play the score live. The singers will also be accompanied by internationally renowned pianist Sergei Saratovsky. “Just the fact that we were able to create an orchestra in Maple Ridge is pretty amazing,” says Beveridge. “We are hoping it is viable and grows much bigger and we are hoping to create a symphony.” First performed in 1882, Iolanthe is one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s 14 musicals, and is universally regarded as one of Sir Arthur Sullivan’s most beautiful scores. Iolanthe (eye-oh-LAN-thee), also called The Peer and the Peri, lampoons the senate and political party system. It tells the story of Strephon, a half-fairy Arcadian shepherd who attempts to find true love with Phyllis, a woman who is ward

“The reason I chose it is because the music really drew me in. I feel like it’s some of Arthur Sullivan’s most developed music. It stays true to Gilbert’s librettos and crazy dialogue.” The cast of 19 includes adults and teenagers, seasoned and new performers. Mary-Ellen Smith, who plays Earl Tolloller,

special tribute act comes along once in a blue moon. From Heartbreak Hotel, Don’t Be Cruel and Hound Dog to Love Me Tender and Blue Suede Shoes, everyone loves Elvis. Following an unprecedented 11 years in the American Superstars show at the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino on the Vegas strip, the “World’s No. 1 Elvis” arrives in Maple Ridge next week. During his youth, Lee discovered the music of Elvis Presley. Hound Dog was the first song that turned his ear. Probably known best this side of the border
for being the first Elvis tribute to completely re-create Presley’s 1968 comeback special at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth and Burnaby’s Michael. J Fox theatres, Lee not only has an uncanny resemblance to Elvis, he has the spot-on moves and vocals that made him a star in Vegas. After his decade-long starring role at the Stratosphere, Lee, who was born in Edmonton and lived in Pitt Meadows, has returned to his Canadian roots and says he looking forward to the next phase of his professional career. He is currently performing around the country, and plans to take his tribute to the King worldwide, and more importantly, he is a new father to twin girls. Lee’s record run in Vegas started when he
won the World Elvis Contest in Memphis, Tenn. on the 20th anniversary of Presley’s death, Aug. 16, 1997. He soon joined the cast of the Vegas ensemble show, which has seen many line-up changes over the years. Lee’s Elvis segment was a constant through the years, bringing fans to their feet nightly with his powerful tribute to the King.

“You meet people from your own country and you are also going to meeting people from all over the world.” To raise money for the competition, Brady and Hepburn have been selling chocolates outside the Langley Farm Market in Maple Ridge every weekend for the past two months. All three models need to have trendy wardrobes and eye-catching accessories to stand out from the crowd. Heaps, 19, is a dancer, model and actress from Chilliwack, who hopes the competition jumpstarts her career. “I’ve been training pretty hard so I feel pretty confident, says Heaps, who teaches dance fulltime in Chilliwack and trains at least 20 hours a week. “I really want to go somewhere with dance. I would love to try and get a scholarship, hopefully go farther than Chilliwack. I would love to make it the finals.”
Sponsor Brady Nugent, Keely Hepburn and Jocelyn Heaps are looking for sponsors who are willing to donate clothes or money to help them compete at the event which runs July 6-15. If you would like to sponsor a model, email ridgetalent@gmail.com.

Peewee girls take top spot staff reporter
staff reporter The Ridge Meadows Burrards girls’ lacrosse team clinched first place in the Lower Mainland Minor Lacrosse Commission’s peewee league last weekend, downing Port Coquitlam 6-5. The Burrards got out to a 4-0 lead, only to have PoCo tie the game at 5-5. Jenica Schellaus scored the winning goal for Ridge Meadows, assisted by Jade Meredith. The peewee girls finish the season with an 18-1-0 record and will face either Burnaby or Coquitlam in the opening round of the playoffs. The Ridge Meadows Burrards junior girls’ squad travelled to Nanaimo last weekend, coming home with a 6-5 victory. The Burrards took a 3-1 lead, only to have Nanaimo score a pair of powerplay goals to tie things up. The two teams traded goals until Jessica Thomson scored the winner for the Burrards. Alysha Coete provided solid goaltending to ensure the win for Ridge Meadows, despite being outshot. The junior girls finish the regular season with a record of 9-10-1, good for 19 points, and will face Port Coquitlam in a single game knock-out to advance to the league playoffs. In midget action, the Burrards girls beat Nanaimo 6-2 on Sunday to finish off their regular season with a win, after losing a close game to the Burnaby Lakers on Saturday. Sierra LaForge had a pair of goals against Burnaby, while Ciarra Curran had a pair of assists. After finishing the season with an 11-8-1 record, the Burrards will again face Burnaby, this time in an opening round best-ofthree playoff series. The bantam girls dominated Langley with a 9-1 win on Saturday, before falling 5-4 to Port Coquitlam on Sunday to finish up their regular season play. Megan Kinna had the hat-trick against Langley, while Sarah Ickert scored twice. Strong defensive play by Mikayla Quinn and Madelyn Barr helped keep Langley off the board. The bantam girls finish the season in third place in the Lower Mainland Minor Lacrosse Commission’s bantam league with a record of 11-8-1, and take on New Westminster No. 2 in a three-game series that gets underway Wednesday. The novice girls beat New Westminster on Saturday 8-6 to finish the season in third place with a record of 10-3-1. MacKenzie Boldt had a hat trick in the win, while Hannah Gjaltema had a pair of goals. Also scoring for the Burrards were Ashley Jansson, Carmen Suchodolski, and Lily Ferguson. Leona Sinclair stood tall in net to get the win. sports@mapleridgenews.com

Burrards chopped down by Timbermen by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter The Maple Ridge Burrards season went from bad to worse Sunday night as they dropped a 10-6 decision to the visiting Nanaimo Timbermen, despite outshooting them. Burrards goalie Blake Duncan allowed 10 goals on 36 shots, including four goals on 12 shots in the first period alone. At the other end of the rink, Burrards shooters struggled to put balls past Nanaimo backup Zach Boychuk, with six goals on 43 shots. With the loss, the Burrards fall further into the Western Lacrosse Association cellar, with a record of 1-9-1, and are the only team in the league below .500. The Burrards opened the scoring Sunday night thanks to an
even-strength goal from the stick of Simon Giourmetakis six minutes into the first period. The Timbermen responded three minutes later, and just past the midway mark of the period, took a 2-1 lead. Rookie forward Brandon Bertoia tied things up for the Burrards with a powerplay goal, but a pair of goals from Nanaimo to end the period gave the visiting team a 4-2 lead heading into the second period. Jarrett Davis cut the Nanaimo lead to one with a goal seven minutes into the middle frame, only to have the Timbermen score three unanswered goals to take a 7-3 lead into the third. The Burrards were by no means ready to concede defeat,
however, as Davis, Riley Loewen, and Colton Porter each scored to bring the home team within one. That would be as close as they would get, as the Timberman finished the Burrards off with a trio of goals to win 10-6. Davis led the Burrards with two goals and one assist, while Randy Daly had three assists. Derek Lowe also contributed a pair of assists. The Burrards are back in action Thursday, July 5 when they travel to New Westminster to take on the Salmonbellies. The Burrards return home Sunday, July 8 for a rematch with the Nanaimo Timbermen at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge. Game time is 6:45 p.m.
Maple Ridge’s Karina Leblanc will be heading to London for the 2012 Olympic Summer Games after the Canadian women’s national soccer team confirmed the veteran goalkeeper would be in the Olympic lineup Monday morning. As the team’s No. 1 goalie, Monday’s announcement was a formality for the 32-yearold, who will be making her second Olympic appearance with Team Canada. LeBlanc helped backstop Team Canada to a berth in the Olympics with a 3-1 win over Mexico at the CONCACAF women’s soccer qualifier tournament in Vancouver in January. LeBlanc will share goalkeeping duties with Erin McLeod of St. Albert, Alberta at the Olympic tournament. This has been a year filled with milestones for the local goalkeeper, as she registered her 100th international cap in March. LeBlanc injured her ankle in practice last month, but has since been cleared to play. Team Canada is hoping to erase the memory of its winless, first-round exit from last summer’s Women’s World Cup last year that saw finish dead last. After flaming out early at the 2011 World Cup, Team Canada rebounded with a gold medal win at the Pan Am Games and are currently ranked No. 7 in the world. The team’s only Olympic appearance was in 2008 in Beijing, where the Canada finished in eighth place after losing to the US in the quarterfinals.

Maple Ridge’s Michael Stovman and Brayden Slaughter have both been selected to represent B.C. Minor Baseball at the 2012 Continental Amateur Baseball Association (CABA) World Series qualifying tournament next month. The two local boys will be part of 15-person team selected from the top peewee-aged players in the province to compete in the elite
U-12 tournament. Slaughter plays for the Ridge Meadows Royals peewee AAA summer team, while Stovman plays for the Coquitlam-Moody peewee AAA team. B.C. Minor Baseball coaches and directors spent three weeks traveling the province last month to put together the best peewee team in B.C. Also getting the invite to the team were Rhys Cratty, Dawson Gray, Dylan Kirby, Der-
ek Krall, Niko Millas, Wesley Moore, Elliot Morrow, Devin Patterson, Nicolas Phelan, Sam Sheomaker, Cade Smith, Jason Willow, and Michael Yang. If the team is successful in winning in it division at the qualifying tournament, it will earn a berth at CABA World Series The CABA World Series has featured teams from every state, along with Puerto Rico, Panama, Guam, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Brazil
and the Dominican Republic. The tournament takes place outside of Toledo, Ohio, and runs July 23 to 28.
Bantam AAA Royals sweep Aldergrove The Ridge Meadows Royals bantam AAA baseball team continued its winning ways last weekend, sweeping Aldergrove in a double-header at home at the Pitt Athletic Fields on Sunday. The Royals opened the first game of the series with a 6-1 win
over Aldergrove, before walloping the visitors 14-3 in the second game of the day. With the wins, the Royals are now in fifth place in the provincial bantam AAA league, with an 18-11 record and .620 win percentage. The Royals are Domenic Baptista, Kole Benard, Devon Bird, Jared Clark, Zac Comeault, Justice Eely, Nick Evans, Brenden Holstrom, Ryan Keller, Ryley Leoppky, Ryan Lipscombe, Garret Maydaniuk, and Clayton Skipper.

EDITOR, THE NEWS:

COME FIND OUT WHY WE’RE THE LOWER MAINLAND’S
