ened the staff, vowing to use a weapon if her demands for the drugs weren’t met. Staff complied and the suspect woman fled from the store with shopping bags full of the drugs she wanted. She didn’t get far however. Foreman said she was followed from the pharmacy by several witnesses to a nearby parking lot, where they confronted her and prevented her from leaving. When police arrived shortly thereafter, the witnesses pointed out the suspect to police, who put her under arrest without incident.

The Oceanside RCMP can’t keep the community safe all by themselves, but in Qualicum Beach at least, they don’t have to. That was made clear last week when a supposed armed robber hit the Medicine Centre Pharmacy on June 21. Oceanside RCMP Corporal Jesse Foreman said the incident started on Thursday at 10 a.m. That’s when a when a masked woman entered the pharmacy and demanded a large quantity of prescription drugs. An organization that works hard to support people who are down on their luck has suffered a setback after a robbery last week. According to Robin Campbell at Manna Ministry, thieves broke into the Manna Ministry van which was parked at the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre in Errington and cleaned it out sometime on June 20. Campbell said thieves took everything, including some expensive tents. See MANNA, page A6

Regional park staff are kept hopping

Regional district staff painted over graffiti covering a toilet and cleaned up garbage and debris at Dunsmuir Community Park in Area H recently. That was just part of the problem. Garbage issues, ATV trespass, vandalism and graffiti were all addressed by RDN staff at Englishman River Regional Park. It’s not just people that have been damaging the park infrastrucrture however. The Little Qualicum River Estuary Regional Conservation Area was hit by May’s king tides, which damaged a section of old fence. RDN staff will be making repairs. — NEWS Staff

Amber Webb loves her dog Diesel. He’s her friend, her fur baby. He’s not well though and he’s lost a lot of weight. It’s easy to see. His ribs show painfully through his fur. Parksville resident and her partner, Eric Kovacs, have spent over $4,000 in vet bills to try to make him better. That’s not money the young couple can easily afford. Far from it, in fact.

That’s not money the young couple can easily afford, but their dog is important to them, a part of their young family. For that reason, Webb said she found it particularly hurtful when some people attending the recent Father’s Day car show in Qualicum Beach treated her as if she were an animal abuser. “The dog is so skinny,” she said. “People just thought we weren’t taking proper care of him.” See DIESEL, page A6

The suspect is facing multiple charges, including uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, causing a disturbance and breach of an undertaking. She made her first appearance in Nanaimo Provincial Court on Friday. Foreman said he was pleased at how willing the people were to get involved and stop a suspected criminal from getting away with

illegal activities in Qualicum Beach. “This is a great example of citizens working together to ensure someone who had committed a serious crime was caught,” Foreman said. “Witnesses followed the suspect and then worked together as a group to surround her at a safe distance and await police.” The investigation continues.

Stanford Place evacuation rehearsed by emergency crews NEIL HORNER

NEIL HORNER PHOTOS

Friday was anything but a normal day at Stanford Place in Parksville — at least, not on the ground floor, anyway. That’s because fire, police and ambulance crews staged a mock evacuation drill of the facility, in order to hone their skills in case of a real emergency. The scenario involved a supposed explosion in the laundry room that set off a fire, injuring two people, who were burned and overcome from smoke inhalation. The dress rehearsal went off without a hitch.

Clockwise from top left: firefighter gives aid to a mock victim in an emergency drill. Even though there was lots of excitement going on, life for residents pretty much remained as normal as possible. Ambulance staff stabilize mock patients supposedly injured in an explosion. Firemen strategize outside.

Diesel is not neglected, says dog’s owner CONTINUED FROM PAGE A3

Everybody was looking and pointing and taking his picture. One lady came up to me and said, ‘if you can’t afford to feed your dog, don’t get a dog.’” The couple ended up leaving the car show early, she said, because the comments and dirty looks made her uncomfortable. “It really hurt my feelings,” she said. “He has inflammatory bowel disease. I shouldn’t be looked down upon because of something I have no control over.” The young Labrador/Rottweiler cross is never going to be cured of his condition, she said, but it can be controlled. “It won’t go away,” she said. “He will always be sick. Once this flareup goes down and his intestines are not so bloated, we can keep him healthy and stable with the proper diet.” Webb said the dog was born with the condition and, while it is not curable, she and her partner have done everything in their power to make their pet

more comfortable. “We’ve tried every medication that could turn it around,” she said. “He must have eaten something that made

it flare up. He hasn’t flared out since he was a year and a half old.” While veterinarians are loathe to spend large amounts of their clients money on expensive treatments for older dogs, Diesel just turned two on June 6. The couple has had some help, notably from Save-On-Foods, which donated baked goods for a bake sale at Ballenas high school to raise money for the treatment. Now, the couple is preparing to send their pet to a specialist in Vancouver — an expedition that may or may not provide at least some relief. What it most certainly will be however is very expensive. While Webb and Kovacs would be sincerely grateful for any other financial help they can get to make Diesel at least comfortable, they have a simple request of Qualicum Beach and area residents that won’t cost anyone a cent. Just don’t look at them like that.

Mana van helps those who need it the most CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE

Campbell is the front man for the organization within the Parksville Fellowship Baptist Church that helps provide food and clothing to the local homeless. He conducts his charity work out of the Manna Ministry van which is parked on Hirst Ave near the Rod and Gun every Saturday from 10:30 to 1 p.m. Campbell is a welcome sight for many of the community’s less fortunate people and he is saddened and shocked that anyone would stoop so low and steal the items they hand out to the less fortunate people in the community. He said it is only a $1,000 van and to put an alarm in it would cost more than the vehicle would cost. “Its a real old van with 400,000 miles on it and they jimmied the lock to get in. It would cost too much to put an alarm on it,” he conceded, and added, “The whole idea is to have it stocked and prepared to go at all times so we are ready to

respond to any emergency.” He said the burglars didn’t damage anything and they didn’t take all the sleeping bags but they did get away with some tents and all their dry goods. “They took all the food, the dog food, the personal items…they totally emptied us out,” he reported. He said despite the loss volunteers had the van out on Saturday

after they restocked it but now they have new issues to deal with. He admitted they are so concerned a theft will happen again, they will be unloading the van after each use and keeping the supplies in a secure place which means much more work for their volunteers. He said it was likely someone who was desperate who broke into the van, but Campbell said it is unfortunate they just didn’t come to him for help because he would be more than happy to assist them. “I hope whoever took it is in need.” He said the tents are expensive, and so is the food so now they hope some donations will come in. Anyone who wants to donate to Manna Ministry can call 250-2480845 or drop off donations at the Parksville Baptist Church on Pym St. in Parksville.

Local trustees throw support behind Cowichan School District 69 trustees say all boards are having a tough time balancing budgets BY BRENDA GOUGH reporter@pqbnews.com

When School District 69 (Qualicum) has its regular board meeting tonight the subject of budget woes will once again be on the agenda. Two members of the local board attended a rally June 20 in support of Cowichan School District trustees who recently passed a restoration budget rather than make the cuts required to balance their budget. On May 16 the majority of trustees voted to restore programs and services, the only school board in the province that didn’t submit a balanced budget. In doing so they face being ďŹ red by Education Minister George Abbott. District 69 trustee Julie Austin who joined the well attended rally at the Cowichan school board ofďŹ ce is recommending that her board write a letter to the Minister of Education and the Premier in support of the Cowichan School Board and their submission to the Ministry of Education of a restoration budget. It is a re-introduction of a similar motion that Austin presented to the board on April 24. That motion was defeated in part because some members thought it was premature, as the Cowichan district had not passed all three readings of their restora-

ing. She said though their school district has weathered the many storms, it continues to be at a cost to their students. According to the School Act boards of

education are required to submit annual balanced budgets. School boards that do not comply can and have been dismissed and replaced by a B.C. government appointed administrator. The act also requires school boards to be responsible for the improvements of student achievement in the school district and that has board chair Lynette Kershaw perplexed. Kershaw who also made the trip to Cowichan last week said she believes minister Abbott will ďŹ re the Cowichan trustees despite being elected in a democratic process. “The biggest thing I came away with from the rally, is they didn’t come up with restoration budget on their own. When they campaigned they listened to their constituents and followed what the constituents were demanding. They are standing up for children’s education and now they are going to be ďŹ red for it,â€? she said. Kershaw said the government’s mandate of putting forward a balanced budget would have resulted in the trustees forgoing their election promise and she will be asking the board to write a letter to the minister of education and the premier in support of the Cowichan trustees. Arts Council pulls out the stops to make sure everyone had a good time BY BRENDA GOUGH reporter@pqbnews.com

There were plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy as the Oceanside Community Arts Council hosted a fundraiser on June 23 at the McMillan Arts Centre (MAC) in Parksville. The first ever MacFun Day had many activities including a bouncy castle, art demonstrations, and live music by Kumbana Marimba. Spokesperson Dave Wright said it was a great opportunity and many people came by to drop in and see what the MAC is all about. “It was about meeting the people and artists who make

the MAC a friendly and welcoming community art centre,” he said. While some members of the MAC were creating artwork outside, members of the Qualicum Beach Weavers and Spinners were doing demos inside. Lindsay Rose the director of the summer art camps at the MAC was on hand demonstrating some of the crafts that will be part of their program which runs July 9 to August 17. There are morning and afternoon sessions each with different activities such as mask and puppet making, drawing, painting and sculpting for ages six to 14. To register for this event call the McMillan Arts Centre at 250-248-8185.

Trustees plan to keep issue in the spotlight CONTINUED FROM PAGE A7

Deb Morran of the Mount Arrowsmith Teachers Association (MATA) also attended the rally and said it was interesting to see the level of support for Cowichan trustees in the community. “There were other unions at the rally in addition to teachers and CUPE. There were also moms, dads and kids and it was great to see,” she said. She said at the Cowichan board meeting it was interesting to see how the debate ensued regarding the consequences of the restoration budget. “They are worried and concerned they will be fired,” she said and added they discussed the fact that it could be their last board meeting. “They see it as not the end … but a building block that has brought the issue to the public’s eye. They are not considering it a failure at all,” said Morran.

In fact, Morran said they talked about needing to set a process in place so that when they are fired, all information will be divulged to the public. “They want to know if democratically elected representatives are fired … who will be coming in to replace them and how much are they being paid. It needs to be public. They are resigned to the fact it was their last board meeting.” The Cowichan trustees were looking into getting a legal opinion on whether they can be dismissed by the government. In the meantime Morran said they are planning a year end rally on June 30, the deadline to have a balanced budget submitted and they have invited anyone in the community to attend it. “It will be a celebration of what they stood up for and the platform they were elected on.”

Think about the long-term

Y

ou’re probably seen at least one of them — the bumper sticker on a huge trailer or RV that reads, “I’m spending my grandchildren’s inheritance!” It’s supposed to be funny or clever or otherwise amusing, but it’s not. It’s not funny because, unfortunately, it’s true — not just of the person sporting the sticker, but also for most of the rest of us as well. We’re burning their oil, polluting their water, spending their money and generally wrecking their planet — and they won’t thank us for it. Back in 1992, the International Institute for Sustainable Development made a point of calling for governments to look down the road. “We cannot simply think of our survival; each new generation is responsible to ensure the survival of the seventh generation. The prophecy given to us, tells us that what we do today will affect the seventh generation and because of this we must bear in mind our responsibility to them today and always.” The idea of looking seven generations down the road is older than that, forming a key component of many First Nations spiritual practice and planning. It’s an idea we should all be thinking about particularly hard these days as the climate continues to change and our leaders and the power structures that support them seem not only unable but entirely unwilling to do anything about it. In fact, our current Canadian government is rolling back even the entirely insufficient measures that have been taken in a race to develop and export as much of Canada’s rich resource heritage as quickly as possible. There’s a good reason for that of course. Our corporate culture demands the maximization of profit and it demands it now. Future generations — those little tykes wearing the short pants on the tricycles in your own backyard — they don’t count for pretty much anything. We should think about why that is and what we can do about it. We’re running out of time to make the changes they need. — editorial by Neil Horner

QUOTABLE:

Letters FEEL THE LOVE Maybe some of the current council members weren’t being completely honest when, during the campaign we — yes including myself — promoted our beliefs regarding the OCP, or was that only for the purpose of gaining votes? I recall a candidate, now on council, saying, lets buy all the beach front and turn it into a park! I believed we, as candidates, were to actually mean what we said in public. I wonder if this might have something to do with why people don’t vote, or, why I didn’t get elected? Maybe? How about the mileage some candidates, now on council, got from trashing the previous council over spending on consultants. Not feeling as confident now? Need to spend another pile of our tax dollars to feel the love? PETER SIMKIN Parksville

LEAVE POLITICS OUT

As the Past President of Qualicum Beach Farmers Market (QBFM) I want to express my deep disappointment at the apparent attempt by Councillor Willie to misuse QBFM to carry on his political hostilities towards Mayor Westbroek. For the record, QBFM has, for a number of years, extended annual invitation to the mayor to officially open the market for the season. Almost always the mayor is accompanied by the town crier to add color

and festivities to the occasion. When the mayor is out of town, the acting mayor has performed that duty— as did Wendy Maurer one year. A few years ago, the market had an issue that involved provincial health authorities. Mayor Westbroek, in concert with MLA Ron Cantelon helped us resolve that. When Premier Gordon Campbell — a Liberal — came to town for some function, the mayor invited me (among many others) to come to the Spirit Square for the occasion. In my opinion the mayor was being no more political than he was by inviting Adrian Dix to QBFM. QBFM has and continues to strive to be a significant asset for the town to achieve the town’s wider goals, such as increased local food production, increase in tourism, a significant venue to draw visitors to the heart of the village on Saturdays and generate increased economic activity. Under Mayor Westbroek’s leadership, town council and staff have worked with the volunteer board of QBFM to make the market as the meeting place for local residents and an attractive venue to bring our out-oftown guests. At the peak of summer months, there are almost 2,000 visitors to the market in less than four hours. I would urge all members of council to please not use the market in any manner other than to enhance the attractiveness of this beautiful village. And yes bring all your guests and help us welcome them to this jewel of Vancouver Island.

Hilliers-area store wins BC Hydro challenge NEIL HORNER news@pqbnews.com

Elizabeth and Richard Rosewell have no shortage of vintage lighting — from oil lamps to 1930s decorative fixtures — at their Hilliers store, Mildred’s Memoriabilia Antiques. They’re proud of those old lights, as well as the many other items available for antique hunters, but the lighting that lets their customers see those historical treasures will soon be state-of-theart, thanks to a $5,000 grant the store received from BC Hydro. The antique store won a free Power Smart energyefficient lighting makeover in Hydro’s Smart Energy Fix contest, beating out challengers from across the area. Hydro spokesperson Kevin Aquino said Mildred’s

Memorabilia said they wanted an energy efficient lighting makeover in order to replace their outdated and inefficient track lighting with a low energy LED type system. “They are active supporters and fundraisers for charities and the nature of their business is about conservation, and to promote restoration and reuse,” he said in detailing the reasons the antique store was chosen. “The local facility strives to be more environmentally sustainable and already practices energy efficient behaviours with recent installations of a heat recovery system and high efficiency windows.” The Rosewells plan to replace about 50 lights at their store with the new LED fixtures.

“They are going to replace all the track lighting with low-wattage LED lights,” Richard said. “Those LED lights are fairly expensive and we will need about 50 of them and they are probably about $20 each, including labour. There’s probably a day or two days work.” The couple, who heard they were finalists a few weeks ago, were delighted with their victory, which saw them beat out a store on Quadra Island in the final round. Other winners across the province included Northcoast Health and Fitness in Terrace, Colonel Baker House in Cranbrook, Salmar Grand Cinemas in Salmon Arm and Roberts Roost RV NEIL HORNER PHOTO Park in Quesnel. Richard and Elizabeth Roswell have lots of old-fashioned lights, but they will soon The renovations are likely have state-of-the-art fixtures in their Hilliers store. to be complete in October.

n many cases Baby Boomers not only have to plan for their own financial future but also that of their parents. Not all Baby Boomers are going to inherit money from their parents; many will have to assist their parents both financially and personally. There is a distinct gap between the level of financial assistance that parents of adult children think they want and what they really need. In a recent survey conducted by Toronto-based Bayshore Home Health the following was revealed: Almost one in four adult children didn’t know their parent’s annual income. One-quarter of adult children think their parents will ask them for financial help to get through the recession, though only five per cent of parents plan to ask for assistance.

A recent example was an adult child that found out that their aging parent cancelled a life insurance policy that they had for many years because they believed that their adult child did not need the proceeds. The Downtown Free Bus, the popular shoppers’ shuttle service provided by the Parksville Downtown Business Association, is rolling again this summer. The bus, which brings riders from the resort areas andoutlying neighbourhoods to explore and enjoy the shops and services in Parksville’s downtown, will run Monday to Saturday from July 2 to Sept. 1 inclusive. It will also provide a free shuttle service between downtown and the community park on Canada Day. “This year PDBA is operating the free bus on a simplified schedule, and on a slightly revised route,” said PDBA President Michelle Jones. “This is in response to feedback we re-

ceived last year. “The bus will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. except on Tuesdays when it operates from noon to 9 p.m. to support the Summer by the Sea Market on Craig Street.” Many of the bus stop signs will feature QR codes which link to the online bus schedule at parksvilledowntown.ca. Schedule brochures will be available beginning this week at downtown businesses, area accommodations, the Visitors’ Centre, Rathtrevor Park, the Parksville Community and Conference Centre, at various locations within theParksville Civic and Technology Centre, and at the PDBA’s street market booth and office.

Nominate your champion for a Queen’s medal The City of Parksville is looking for residents who have made a significant contribution to the community. They are asking people to join the city in celebrating the Queen’s sixty years of service with a call for nominations of exceptional candidates for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. The Governor General of Canada announced the program as a way to recognize Canadians of all ages for their contributions to community and country.

To ensure people from all areas of the country are recognized, the government is inviting all of Canada’s 3,734 local governments to nominate a medal recipient and alternate candidate Council is looking for people to nominate exceptional citizens, from which they will select a winner. Nominations should be submitted on the city’s website (www.parksville.ca) or at the city hall administration department by July 13. — NEWS staff

It is with great sadness that we announce that Dot passed away on June 3rd. at Trillium Lodge. She will be deeply missed by her son Bob (Doreen), grandchildren Jody (Glenn Hancock), Wanda (John Ben), Bejay (Brenda) and great-grandchildren Tyson, Kali, Mikayla, Adara and Clover. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack and sisters Hilda and Jean. Dot and Jack moved to Qualicum Beach in 1970 and purchased Qualicum Beach Boat Rental, which they ran until 1978. She enjoyed her retirement and was very active in the community. She spent the last 5 years in Trillium Lodge, which she very much enjoyed. Special thanks to Cheryl and all the staff at Trillium Lodge.

No service by request.

Ronald Dwayne Dalman January 10, 1946 – June 15, 2012 After losing a courageous battle with cancer, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ronald Dalman, a wonderful husband and father. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 45 years, Elaine, his two children, Darryl (Jill) and Wendy (Brian), and one granddaughter, Bailey. Ron lived in Port Alberni for most of his life and worked at Jack’s Tire Service and later at Mars Industries as a heavy duty tireman. After retirement he and Elaine moved to Parksville as Ron liked nothing better than going for long walks on the beach. One of his favorite pastimes was target shooting at the gun range either in Port Alberni or here in Parksville. Because of Ron’s love of driving, Ron and Elaine enjoyed countless numbers of road trips together throughout British Columbia and the United States. Ron will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts. The family would like to thank all the Doctors and Nurses who helped Ron through this difďŹ cult journey. Special thanks to our family especially brother in law Armand and sister in law Florence who were there for us through the entire journey, all of our friends and our great neighbours for all the support they have given us along the way. Ron requested that there be no service and in lieu of owers, donations be made to the BC Cancer Organization or Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.

Water Dancers finish strong JAMES CLARKE

sports@pqbnews.com

Oceanside’s Ravensong Water Dancers synchronized swim team capped off its season recently with a strong showing at their provincial championships. In the mix alongside 12 other teams from throughout B.C. at Commonwealth Games Pool in Kamloops, the Water Dancers were in fine form, as their trio of Jasmin Ford, Allandra Ryhorchuk and Julie Preston garnered gold, while the Duet of Alanna Morton and Kyra Wilson earned silver, and together with Dasha Tchernova, took fourth in the team competition. It was, said head coach Carol MacFayden “a good year with a small yet enthusiastic group of kids. We try to always have fun while working on our skill development and team camaraderie,” she explained, adding those close to the club are already “looking forward to what next year brings.” To that end the Water Dancers will be hosting their yearly ‘see it try it’ in September “where we love to show kids our moves. We want to welcome potential new Ravensong Waterdancers,” said MacFayden. Watch for more info on the bulletin board at the pool for exact dates and time.

More than 300 people took to the water at Ravensong Aquatic Centre for the swim portion of the Qualicum Beach Triathalon.

QB triathalon numbers back up

BY JAMES CLARKE sports@pqbnews.com

Over 450 people turned out under surprisingly sunny conditions for this year’s Quality Foods Qualicum Beach Triathlon, and while that’s not a full field, the local event looks to be back on solid footing. “We had almost 70 more people then last year, so the numbers are growing again which is good news, and wow, did we get lucky with the weather” the QBTs longtime keeper of the times, David Kazakoff with the host Tri-Athletics Society, said after. The maximum field is 500, which is where it stood for years until the event was sidelined in 2010 while Ravensong Aquatic Centre underwent its refit. On Sunday, 156 adults and 140 youth, along with another 60 in the Tiny Tri for 4-7 year olds, turned out for the 16th running of the QBT. Nanaimo’s Byron Trajan turned in the top time on the day at 52:05 — Byron, who won the event last year, completed the 400m Swim (that’s 16 lengths of the pool) in 4:54; did the 18km bike in 30:09, and finished the 5km run in 17:02.

While it wasn’t a course record, “that’s pretty darn good,” chuckled Kazakaoff “they’re all good splits.” Evi Emmenegger from Seattle was not only the first adult to cross the finish line on the day, but her time of 1:06.07 also held up to be tops among the women “which is very unusual.” An accomplished triathlete back home, Evi, who was in the F45-49 age group, was in heat 7 (out of 13) David explained, adding “we go from the slower to fastest swimmers, so it’s usually a faster swimmer that does very well.” “We’ve been vacationing here (in Oceanside) for 12 years but we’ve always missed (the QBT) by a couple weeks, so this year we decided to come early so we could be part of it,” said the American — also completing their respective individual events were here daughter Geneva, 13, and Olin, 10. “It’s beautiful here — great course,” she smiled between gulps of water, pointing out “I grew up in Alaska so this is like home for me.” (We can only assume she was referring to the natural beauty and not

the weather). Taylor Gunstone from Tofino was the first adult male in at 1:12.02 for second in his M18-24 division. “Awesome course — I love it,” he puffed. Topping the list of notable performances on the part of our locals were two ladies who set new records. QBT veteran Sandra Reed from Qualicum shattered the old record in the F65-69 division by 10 minutes with a time of 1:22.38. Also setting a new standard in her division was 71-year-old sparkplug Sheri Farinha from Parksville who won her Over70 division with a time of 1:30.14. “They both did amazing,” said Dave. QB’s Garfield Buchanan, 72, was the oldest competitor to complete the course Sunday in a time of 1:23.47. Patrick Maguire from Victoria, who has won the QBT in years past, was second overall and set a new record in his M55-59 division with a time of 56.44. The top finishing local was an-

other QBT veteran, Rob Williamson, who won his M45-49 age group and finished 5th overall in a time of 57:52. It is, confirmed Kazakoff, “very impressive to finish in under and hour.” The first local female over was Jackie Allen, who finished second in her F45-49 division at 1:10.19. At the other end of the age spectrum, Nanoose Bay’s Sophie Lorette won the F8-9 individual Minor category in a time of 24.20 (100m swim, 4.5km bike and 1km run). Tayden De Pol was the top youngest male (8-9 yr olds) with a time of 23:18. Kai Stilwell was also the top local finisher in his age group (M10-11). In the team competitions, locals of note included The Mooo Racers — Spencer Dipper (swim), Christopher Raduy (bike) and Ethan Raduy (run) who finished first overall in the 8-11 Minor category in a time of 20:58. “We had a great day — great weather, and everything went smoothly,” confirmed Michelle Lantaigne, who was co-race director with Donna Meadows.

The Tigers savour the moment Saturday after winning the Mosquito division house league championships.

Minor baseball, major success BY JAMES CLARKE sports@pqbnews.com

The kids of Oceanside Minor Baseball have been busy, and on Saturday the youngsters earned an A for effort — both at home and on the road. Sixteen house teams in four divisions took to the fields up at Springwood Park in what for most players was their final innings of the year. The culmination of a week long playoffs, in Mosquito division (9-10 year olds) action, it was all Tigers on this day — the kids in orange were leading the championship game, played out at Springwood Old, by a bunch, but the Pirates battled back in the final inning to make it interesting. Tigers’ coach Ryan Pletz was as stoked as his players as they all ran out to the mound to mob their closer, Cole

Pletz. Brandon Nichol led the charge in that one with his pitching and his bat. The Tigers went 2-0-1 in the playoffs. In the afternoon set the Peewee (1112s) league winners Real Teal had their hands full as they clipped the Marauders in a close one. The Marauders had to be the comeback kids down the stretch to earn a berth in the final, and were within two runs in the fifth inning, but came up just short. “It was a really successful house league season,” OMB president Mike Parlow said after the sun had settled on another campaign, pointing out “we also had the Tadpole (7-8) and Rookie division (5-6) out there as well that day. The rookie division is new this year, so that was great to see, and now we’ve got three summer ball teams kicking off including two in the Mosquito division,

and I don’t think we’ve had that in over a decade.” All told he said there were some 270 kids registered for OMB’s House League this year, and earning props for their contributions as main sponsor Save On Foods. OMBs two Bantam and two Midget teams were all on the road for their playoffs. The Oceanside #2 Midget house team won their Mid-Island League in exciting fashion over the weekend — check out Friday’s News for the whole story. PLAY BALL! — In Rep ball, Oceanside’s Mosquito AA team thumped Comox Valley AAA 11- 2 in exhibition action up at Springwood on Sunday, and tied the visitors 6-6 in seven innings in game two of the double header, “so that’s a real strong showing by them,” Parlow pointed out.

Senior carpet bowlers recognized OCEANSIDE — From the bumped-but-not-forgotten files comes word RDN Recreation & Parks recently added some more names to its growing list of those named to the Performance Recognition program. Earning the accolades during the RDN’s recreation com-

mission meeting at Oceanside Place were three local seniors with game — Chris Vanderstoep, Glenn Howell and Margaret Howell. All three garnered gold at the BC Senior’s games in 2011 in Carpet Bowling, but were unable to attend the RDN’s Fall Performance Recognition Ceremony. All

three were presented with certificates, a pin and a gift certificate. According to the RDN’s Christina Finnie, this brings the total to 105 area athletes that have been recognized so far since the program surfaced in 2010. - James Clarke

Hard work and wins, but all fun BY JAMES CLARKE sports@pqbnews.com

There were smiles allround at Springwood Park Saturday as 57 special olympians took to the pitch for the B.C. regional bocce qualifier. It’s the first time Oceanside has hosted the event, and Bobby Deborne, Island manager of community development for SOBC, said the event is a big day on the sports calendar for the participants, who were all trying to qualify for the 2013 BC Summer Games in Langley. “It’s going really good,” Deborne explaining there were six different Island communities represented at the all-day play-down. There were eight locals in the mix, including the team of Kerri Lipsack and Melanie McMaster who brought their game faces (which included plenty of smiling) to the pitch on Saturday as they were ‘kicking butt’ in a 12-6 win over Saltspring Island when The News stopped by. “Nicely done guys, that was a good game — a very good game,” one of the volunteer linesman remarked as the girls savoured their win which helped punch their ticket to the provincials.

Exciting Eaglecrest Ladies Golf trophy From the desk of Elizabeth Marsland comes word Irene Creally edged out Liz Gillies on Hole #16 to win the 2012 Eaglecrest Ladies Golf trophy in exciting fashion. The consolation competition, played out among those who were knocked out in the first round, was won by Lillian Houg. In other news, this year’s countrywide RCGA Pin Round competition is well under way, with three of Eaglecrest’s scheduled rounds already played. According to Marsland, RCGA rules specify a maximum of ten pin rounds in the course of the season, though most clubs, including Eaglecrest, opt for six. Each club winner — the player with the lowest aggregate net score over her four best rounds — receives a pin at the

end of the season. The Pin Round days at Eaglecrest this year “have been plagued by damp and cold weather, to the extent that perseverance seemed at times almost as important as golf skill,” she said, pointing out only 12 players completed the most recent game, but even so, “some consistent leaders are emerging.” Results so far, with net scores (retro in the case of ties):

FAMILY DAY

If we could talk to the animals ...

North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre holds a special family day event to help people get up close and personal

BY BRENDA GOUGH reporter@pqbnews.com

The North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre (NIWRC) hosted it’s annual Family Day on Saturday, June 23. A fundraiser for the centre all proceeds help the non-profit organization continue to care for ill, injured and orphaned wildlife. Parksville artist Monk was on hand with her community canvas which has been at three Family Day events at the centre and is still a work in progress. Several animal lovers young and old added their brush strokes to the piece on Saturday. Anyone who adopts an animal or buys a seasons pass or membership at the centre in Errington will be entered in a draw to win a kids bicycle. The draw will take place on July 31. For more information visit www.niwra.org

MUSIC

Bluegrass Festival set to kick off in Deep Bay BY BRENDA GOUGH reporter@pqbnews.com

Tight vocal harmonies with fiddle, banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar and upright bass are some of the trademarks of bluegrass music the second annual Lighthouse Bluegrass Festival this weekend will provide three days of non-stop entertainment. There will be picking parties everywhere as Deep Bay welcomes musicians from far and wide over the Canada Day long weekend.

SHOP LOCALLY

The Lighthouse Bluegrass Festival presents everything from old time music, string band music, new grass, grass rock and other variations on the theme. Last year at the first annual Lighthouse Bluegrass Festival local group BackPorch Banjo shared the stage with Canada’s premiere bluegrass band, the Foggy Hogtown Boys and the international bluegrass supergroup, Long Road Home featuring Pete Wernick aka Dr. Banjo, from Colorado. Linda Thorburn who plays a 5-string

Scruggs style banjo with BackPorch Banjo said her group will be performing this year but will just do one set at the festival because she will be one busy lady during the event. Thorburn has been immersed in bluegrass for over 30 years and as one of the festival organizers she knows what works and what doesn’t and she said they want to continue to build on the success of last year’s inaugural festival. She said bringing amazing talent is costly but well worth it because they

want people here to experience a first class bluegrass festival. “I am choosy about the bands. I know who the good ones are. We have some clout and can pick and choose who we want so why not have a few good ones? Each year we can get better and that is the goal,” she acknowledged. Acclaimed John Reischman and The Jay Birds out of Vancouver as well as Mark Phillips & IIIrd Generation from Norman Oklahoma are this year’s headliners. See BLUEGRASS, page B3

general.” MacDonald-Eardley is an increasing rarity — someone who was born and raised on Vancouver Island, Whiskey Creek to be precise, part of the MacDonald family that has been a presence in the area for many years. That local connection has proved invaluable in her new role, as word slowly trickles out that it’s Cheryl who is running Cruiser’s these days. “I’m starting to get more local traffic from people who heard about me doing this,” she said. Although she said she would very much like to cater to more of the trucking community and locals, she said most of the people who drop by her Alberni Highway location — right next to the gas station in Whiskey Creek — are tourists. While some come to support her new business, most of her growing clientele come for the food — simple, hearty Canadian fare — and for the atmosphere. “What people are telling me is they like the friendly service,” she said. “They are saying this should be called the laughing cafe. We’re always laughing and full of smiles. It’s a comfortable place, a warm, cozy place.” The door opens and a group of customers swarm in. Her break is over and soon she is run off her feet. She’s smiling though, and for good reason.

heryl MacDonaldEardley has done lots of different jobs in her life, from painting boat ramps to working on a potato farm and when she did, she always worked hard and worked long. The Coombs resident and mother of two now has a new job and she’s working even harder — and longer — but that’s not the biggest difference. “I’m doing it for myself now,” she said on a break between customers at her new place of business — Cruiser’s Grill in Whiskey Creek. “I was working seven days a week for everybody else and I reached a point where I just wanted to work one job — for me.” MacDonald-Eardley took over the business this spring, making the leap from employee to employer, and she hasn’t looked back. Running a restaurant is a lot different from selling paint, but she’s no stranger to the world of the grill. “My first real job was as a prep cook and dishwasher at the Frontiersman Restaurant when I was 15,” she said. “I also worked at Pastimes in Errington, which is really where I learned all about running a business, managing a kitchen cooking, prep, serving, everything about restaurants in

Mark Phillips & IIIrd Generation Bluegrass Band is a talented group of award-winning musicians who perform hard-driving traditional bluegrass and bluegrass-gospel music. Young and energetic, the band consistently entertains audiences all over North America. With five critically acclaimed albums, two Juno nominations and two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations, the buzz around John Reischman and The Jaybirds just continues to grow. Like the mandolinist at its helm, the group fashions a stylish, elegant take on bluegrass that is innovative and unadorned, sophisticated and stripped-down, happily old-fashioned, yet unself-consciously new. Their live show is a genial blend of storytelling and side-show humor with their studied performance of original songs, instrumentals, and newly arranged traditional material. A full day of games and family events are scheduled including go-karts, kite flying demonstrations and a wide selection of food, arts and craft vendors. There will be an entire day of music at the park starting at 1 p.m. featuring many local and Vancouver Island musical acts including Lemon Tree, Gold & Shadow, Carli & Julie Kennedy, Johnny Inappropriate, Time Well Waisted, Johnny Vallis, Tripple Grace and then the headliners the Timebenders at 8:30 p.m. Vallis who performed in Parksville during Canada Day in 2009 and 2010 said he is thrilled to be coming back with his man of many voices show. “It’s a lot of fun. I do the standards and I run around in the audience. The audience in Parksville enjoys what I do,” stated Vallis. He said his hour long leg-

ends of rock n roll show has good time music that everyone in the family will enjoy. Some of those legends include Buddy Holly, Mick Jagger and John Lennon and the presentation involves a few costume changes. He agreed that if the weather is really hot it can be uncomfortable up on stage with so many outfits on. “I wear different layers and I have to make little costume changes. I have had an inhouse sauna for some gigs,” he laughed. Vallis said impersonating Mick Jagger means he has to stay in shape because even though the front man for the Rolling Stones is 68 years old, the rock n roll icon is in amazing shape. “He works out like crazy. Genetically he has that build but he works at it. He is very smart. I run and I try to keep

in shape but I should be doing more than I do,” he confessed. Vallis said this Canada Day he is bringing his six-year-old son with him and they will watch the parade and take part together in the festivities happening throughout the day in Parksville. The celebration wraps up with a spectacular fire works display presented by Thrifty Foods. The much-anticipated pyrotechnics will light up the sky around 10 p.m. For those who want to watch the fireworks in a unique way there is an opportunity to observe them from the water. Participants will paddle off the shore of Parksville from the public beach access at Mariner Way at 8:30 p.m. The cost is $59 and you must pre-register with RDN Recreation and Parks at 250248-3252.

Qualicum Beach to take a ‘40s theme rade at 11:30, which will muster at the parking lot adjacent to The Old Schoolhouse at Fern and Memorial. “All members of the community are encouraged to participate, from very young to very old,” she said. “We are hoping to attract both young cyclists and older citizens alike on their favorite sets of wheels. We would ask that participants decorate their respective rides and/or selves in Canada’s official red and white.” They will march to the Legion grounds at Veterans Way, where the ceremonies begin at noon.

Festivities will commence with an address by Mayor Teunis Westbroek, the singing of the national anthem and the cutting of a beautiful cake provided by Quality Foods at 2:15 p.m. There will be facepainting, games, food and fun throughout the afternoon. The entertainment line-up includes The Mount Arrowsmith Pipes and Drums Band, The Tidesmen Barbershop Chorus, Sharon Lafferty’s Clog Dancers and dancing to the rhythm and blues music of the ever popular Bent Rymn Band between 1 and 4 p.m. — NEWS staff

The Arrowsmith Pipe Band will play around 1:30 and Jessica Kelly will sing O Canada and a few others, with the formal cup cake “cutting” a bit later, at 3 p.m. The Ladies Auxilary will run a barbecue and Dave Marco will perform. — staff

Qualicum Beach will be loud and proud of both its country and its local history during Canada Day celebrations on Sunday. “Qualicum Beach was amalgamated as a village in 1942,” Legion spokesperson Joan Lane said. “In honor of our 70th anniversary, we will be celebrating this year’s Canada Day with a 1940’s theme.” She said many participants will be sporting costumes from that era, courtesy of The Echo Players’ Village Theater, which she noted is also an important part of the town’s heritage. Bert Abbott takes his wheelchair for a spin on the new Regional District of Nanaimo trail in Qualicum Bay on Saturday. He was delighted with the commitment to help disabled people take to the bush.

There’s no reason why Qualicum Bay residents with physical disabilities can’t go for a bush experience, whether they walk, roll or something in between. That’s because the Regional District of Nanaimo on Saturday officially opened the first fully accessible trail in the district. The 2.5-kilometre section of manicured trail marks the start of a major new accessble outdoor feature for the RDN, said chair Joe Stanhope at the ceremony. “Like many of you, I draw great strength from time spent in the forests and by the rivers and streams of our beautiful Vancouver Island,” Stanhope said. “No one should miss the opportunity to wander along a trail, stare up the trunk of a huge Douglas fir, gaze at salmon fry in a creek and munch on the occasional huckleberry.” The trail, he said, is designed for people who rely on wheelchairs, scooters and other aids to get around and who are often shut out

from the parks and trails experience because of rough terrain. “In time, when the bridges are completed over Nile and Thames Creeks, you’ll be able to start her and walk, roll or ride to downtown Bowser without having to take a car or walk down the side of the highway,” he said. The bulk of the work was carried out over the fall and winter of 2011, with help from a $270,000 grant from the Province of B.C. and the Island Coastal Economic Trust. As well, the Job Opportunity Program supplied skilled workers to do the job right. An additional $460,000 came from the Regional Parks budget of the RDN. “When you’re out on the trail you’ll see the fine work they did on the tapping edge for the sight impaired and the great wood carvings they left for us,” Stanhope said. Area H director Bill Veenhof said he saw the project as one of building connections. See NEW TRAIL, page B7

New trail part of a larger overall system in the RDN CONTINUED FROM PAGE A3

“It connects elderly people with young people, it connects people with nature and us with each other,” he said. “The fact this is the first accessible trail in the RDN is huge.” Veenhof noted the idea began as a concept in 1997 and, by 1998 a large number of volunteers had begun flagging trees and blazing a route along undeveloped roads. This spring, the final finishing touches to the first section of the trail were completed. Bert Abbott from the Spinal Cord Society knows only too well the frustrations that can come to a person in a wheelchair who wants to enjoy a bit of the outdoor experience in the woods. “Getting out on the trails has always

been a challenge,” he said. “You start out with your family and then there’s a big root you can’t get across and they have to haul your butt over it and then there’s a whole bunch of rocks and then there’s another big root and when you finally get close to where you want to go, you get to the big mud pit. That puts an end to our fabulous day in the woods.” Regan Myers of the Accessible Wilderness Society said he worked with the district to fine-tune the trail and was delighted with the result. “Our group has assessed this trail and approved it,” he said. “It works for almost everyone.” Myers noted his group publishes special guides that detail which parks are accessible in the province and how far you can go on their trails before there’s a problem. “This trail will be featured in our next guide,” he said. “We are hoping to bring tourists through our work and this is one of the places they’re going to come.” Project manager Joan Michel noted the trail is just a part of the overall regional district trail system that she hopes one day will allow pedestrians to walk from Courtenay to Parksville in a woodland setting. The Qualicum Beach Artisans Market is about to start it’s summer season. On Friday starting at 3 p.m. there will be an exciting array of art and music in the heart of Qualicum Beach. The juried market means quality work for those coming out to see what is new and with everything from stone to pottery, glass, painting, photography, metalwork, blacksmithing and more there is a wide range of artistic talent to view. The market, now in it’s fourth year, will be going for 10 weeks starting June 29. Running until August 31, the market will feature plenty of high quality crafts and handmade art because this year it has doubled its space. Dee Aguilar said each vendor had to go through a jurying process and the selection of work was based on quality, originality and marketability. Even the kids will have the opportunity to get involved this year, with an area set up for them to participate in an art project each week between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. Youth will also have an area dedicated to showcasing their art. The location is right beside The Old School House on Fern Roadfrom 3 to 8 p.m. each Friday and includes great entertainment. Kerri Brown of Qualicum Beach

is the featured musician for the first market. She plays with the band Skewlines and will be bringing along her bandmates and some other special guest. A music teacher in Parksville, Brown found her way to Qualicum Beach after living and performing in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, Ireland and the United Kingdom. The accomplished musician who plays guitar, fiddle and mandolin has an eclectic musical background and has played with award winning Canadian fiddle players from Cape Breton to B.C. She said five hours is a long gig so she is hoping some of her friends from Phil Harmonic’s Jug Band Orchestra will drop by and perform with her on Friday night. The list of artists and musicians will change weekly, but some of the artists who will be on hand this Friday include stone carver Del Mark; glass blower Ted Jolda; potters Larry and Dee Aguilar; photographer Alan Cornell and glass bead maker Wendy Maurer. “The Old School House is also open Friday night until 8 p.m. so it’s a good fit. Arts and culture in the community play a big role in our market and the Town of Qualicum Beach is creating more of a focus on it and even the business community is embracing that segment as an economic driver,” Maurer said. The Parksville and Qualicum Beach Library Branch Summer Reading Club starts July 5 and includes some hocus pocus by local magicians Heather (left) and Sandra McNeill.

Catch the magic of books with the Summer Reading Club BY BRENDA GOUGH reporter@pqbnews.com

The Summer Reading Club at the Parksville and Qualicum Beach libraries is about to kick off with all sorts of fun activities planned. The library is offering two levels of summer reading programs: Summer Reading Club for Kindergarten to Grade 7 and Read to Me for pre-schoolers and those who cannot yet read independently. The Summer Reading Club provides elementary school children with incentives to make reading an integral part of their summer break and encourages them to practice and improve their reading skills while school is out. Strange…But True is the theme for this year’s program, and each week has a different theme featuring titles that will expose young readers to different genres - science fiction, fantasy, nonfiction, mystery, adventure, poetry, folk and fairytales, jokes, humour, and more. Children who sign up receive a fun registration package with a bookmark, stickers, trinkets, and a reading record book in which they are encouraged to keep track of the books they have read. When they finish their reading record, children are eligible to receive a special Summer Reading Club medal at the end of the summer. Children are also invited to attend interesting programs at Vancouver Island Regional Libraries. Parksville and Qualicum Beach Library branches will be holding a multitude of special activities, events and contests to encourage young people to read over summer break. “We are really excited about our summer programming this year” emphasized Eileen Gillette, library manager at Qualicum Beach Library. Parksville and Qualicum Beach Libraries

will be offering such programs as: weekly crafts, games, puppets shows, prize draws and even a kid’s talent show over the summer. Reading is like all skills — a little practice goes a long way, and the old ‘use it or lose it’ adage applies equally well to reading, especially for children who don’t keep up these important skills during their summer vacation. Nobody knows this better than teachers who believe that some children can lose as much as 60 per cent of their acquired skills over the summer break. A minimum of 10 minutes a day is all it takes for primary school children to keep up their reading skills and speed. “Research shows that students who don’t read a minimum of 10 books at their current reading level will actually regress over the summer and be further behind, compared to where they were at the start of their summer vacation, and then they’ll have to play catch-up in September,” according to Melissa Legacy, customer service librarian at Parksville Library. She suggests that parents encourage daily reading activities during the summer by signing their kids up for reading programs as a great way to keep children and parents motivated. The Summer Reading Club starts July 5, with special guests Heather and Sandra McNeill performing all sorts of fun magic tricks for kids. Registration for the free summer reading programs starts on July 3 but children can register any time in July. Parents are encouraged to sign their children up early. Find more Information at www.virl.bc.ca. Kids use their own or their parent’s library card, which is available free-of-charge at all local library branches.

Wayne Barber shows off a fully-restored, brightly painted tractor on his five-acre property in Nanoose Bay Friday. The Regional District of Nanaimo wants the machinery moved elsewhere or scrapped.

Machines are not junk says owner CONTINUED FROM PAGE B10

He said he needs the crane in order to pull the pump out of his deep well, as well as to provide a safety line while he works on the damaged roof of the workshop. “We have the machines, so we thought we should do it ourselves,” he said. Touring around the property, he showed obvious pride in some of the machines he has collected and at least partially restored, including a 1935 sawmill and his oldest piece, a 1929 welder. “All the stuff is old, but I use it,” he said. “The crane has 120 hours on it since I got it and I’ve done 200 hours of work on it. It cost me $3,000.” Ann noted the first complaint came right after they obtained the crane, because the starter went on it, leaving it stranded in the driveway. A lot of work and $1,500 for a new starter later, they snugged the crane up against their house — if not entirely out of sight from the road, then nearly. She said photographs shown at the RDN meeting were out of date, with rubbish

piles long since removed. Wayne said he is aware of the concerns about his machinery, noting that while he would ideally like to keep the machines he restores, he’s willing to let it go if there’s a collector or museum somewhere who would give them a good home. Barber’s plea to the RDN board didn’t go unnoticed, with director Julian Fell saying the issue was highly subjective. “These are clearly museum artifacts,” he said at the meeting. “They are not junk. They might be unsightly in somebody’s eyes, but beautiful in someone else’s eyes. They might be valuable one day.” Director George Holme was also sympathetic, noting the full board meeting wasn’t for another two weeks, so the 30-day timeline wouldn’t start until then. Board manager Paul Thorkelson said staff is more than happy to work with the owners to come to a satisfactory conclusion, vowing not to take any drastic action prior to consulting with the board.

BC Seniors Games bid considered NEIL HORNER

news@pqbnews.com

The demographic of Oceanside could see a sharp spike in the senior set if a study by the Regional District of Nanamio turns out positive. Dean Banman, the RDN’s manager of recreation services said the district is currently looking into the possibility of hosting the 2015-2016 BC Senior Games. “The Senior Games don’t put out an official request until January of next year and we wanted to be ready,” Banman said. “I met with the Town of Qualicum Beach and with the Seniors Games Society and I will meet with the City of Parksville before the end of the month.” The meetings, he said, will be a precursor to a RDN Recreation Commission report to be presented to the board some time in October. “We are looking for direction about whether the RDN, city and town would be able to or if there is any direction to submit a bid to the Seniors Games,” Banman said. “We are hearing lots of enthusiasm and it sounds like there is lots of energy building up, but we determine

what are some of the benefits of doing it and what are the areas we need to focus on.” One challenge, he said, would be to determine which community would serve as the village centre, as well as what additional facilities would be needed. “An athletics facility is something which we don’t have,” he said. “However, we are close enough to Port Alberni or or Nanaimo that it would be acceptable, so we do have two options for track. “ He stressed that, even if Parksville, Qualicum Beach and the Regional District of Nanaimo opted to put in a bid to host the games, there’s no guarantee they would be successful. “It is competitive,” he said. “It is not by default. They traditionally get between six and eight applicants per year.” However, he said this region has some natural advantages that could help a bid. “It hasn’t been here for a while and what a lot of people speak to is our natural beauty, plus the facilities we have and the natural demographic,” he said.
