Flood waters steady as Chilliwack waits for the next pulse

Residents of 39 other homes near the Carey Point area have been on evacuation alert since before the resident-built berm was breached Friday evening. BC River Forecast Centre officials are now predicting levels to rise to six to 6.6 metres at Mission by the weekend. As of Monday morning, the river had fallen to 6.2 meters and was levelling off after peaking at just under 6.4 metres Saturday. The upper limit predicted for the weekend would approach water levels that were reached in 1972. The Gills, a Chilliwack family of blueberry farmers, are already exhausted from trying to protect their home with sandbags and water pumps. For weeks they’ve watched as the rising river has eaten away their blueberry orchard bit by bit. “It’s been horrible,” Amarjit Gill told The Progress. “So far, inside the house is OK but if it comes up any higher, we will have to leave.” She said her husband, Buhd, is “so tired” from constant sandbagging that he’s almost depressed. “But we have been so busy watching everything day and night, we just keep going.”

Contact centre ready to move forward Jennifer Feinberg The Progress It’s been quiet at the site of the proposed Chilliwack Health Contact Centre site on Hocking Avenue. But that’s about to change. Site preparation for the building renovations is set to start next month. Partners and stakeholders came together at city hall Monday morning for an update on the latest plan details. Securing the necessary opera-

tional funding to fully realize the vision for a “one-stop” health and social services facility was one of the last obstacles to moving forward, said contact centre manager Lee Anne Hanson of Pacific Community Resources Society. “That obstacle has now been removed,” Hanson told The Progress, explaining that major project partners like BC Housing and Fraser Health, along with PCRS and City of Chilliwack have recently hammered out a revised plan. “We’re ready to move ahead this summer.”

Groundbreaking on the project is slated for September, along with the signing of a partnership agreement. The Chilliwack Health contact centre plan has evolved over several years, but the core vision from the start has been to offer integrated health, mental health, addiction and social services to the area’s marginalized and at-risk populations. In other words, house and support the homeless for up to a year, while they rebuild their lives and acquire key life skills.

From last spring when the special rezoning for the project went through, up until this point, it’s been an ongoing struggle to make the capital funding and service components work together, Hanson explained. “It’s been an amazing process just to witness it all coming together,” she said. “There’s been solid community interest from Chilliwack from the beginning because this community cares. This collaborative project clearly demonstrates that.”

Frustrated teachers offer summer send off Katie Bartel The Progress Even though the school year is coming to a close, teacher unrest is not. About a dozen Chilliwack teachers rallied along Vedder Road and Luckakuck Way last Wednesday to remind the community their fight for public education is not over. It was one of several teacher rallies held across the province on the same day. “Just because summer vacation has arrived for students and most teachers, the issues haven’t gone away,” said Doug Fraser, teacher at Ford Mountain Correctional Centre, which falls within School District 33’s mandate. “I’m out here to protest against Bill 22 and the lack of true mediation going on right now.” For Sardis secondary foods teacher Doreen Van Stolk, her presence at the rally came down

to safety. Holding a placard that read ‘Everyone’s a someone in a small class,’ Van Stolk described the state of her working environment. “I have 31 students in a classroom that’s designed for 24,” she said. “Not only have I gone flying, I’ve had a student who tripped over a chair and cut his arm from his wrist to his elbow. These are big kids. There’s nowhere to move, nowhere to sit, nowhere to work … which lowers the quality of education.” B.C. teachers have been in a battle with the government for the past year when their last contract expired in June, 2011. The teachers’ union have argued for an increase in wages, benefits and better working conditions, including smaller class size and composition, a reduction in case loads, more class preparation time and improved learning specialist

ratios. But the government has maintained all public sectors must accept a net-zero contract, which has resulted in a tumultuous standoff between the union and the education ministry. Last September, the union entered phase one of job action, resulting in no teacher supervision during recess, and before and after school care; no teacher attendance in administrative meetings; and no teacher-written report cards. Job action escalated in March to a full-scale walkout that lasted three days. Shortly after, the government passed Bill 22, legislation that forbade further strike action and imposed a six-month “cooling off” period, which completes in August. One month later, the teachers’ union voted in favour of withdrawing from extracurricular activities.

Langley Township has no immediate plans to join the Fraser Valley Regional District. “If we can work within the regional district we have, and make them work better, we’ll be better off,” Township Mayor Jack Froese told The Progress Monday after a meeting with Fraser Valley mayors Friday. But talks with the FVRD aren’t over, he added, as the Township still has some tough issues to work out with the Metro Vancouver Regional District and with TransLink, Metro Vancouver’s regional transportation authority. “It’s not a simple thing to do (to change regional district governments),” he said, “and we want to focus on what we can do now.” Froese and mayors from Chilliwack, Abbotsford and Mission met in Abbotsford for more than two hours to talk about regional district matters. Chilliwack Mayor Sharon Gaetz, who is also the FVRD chair, said there was “no interest” at the Friday meeting to create a new regional district comprised of Abbotsford, Mission and Langley Township. But the three Fraser Valley communities do share “similar challenges with transportation” as Langley, she said. “We’ve wanted a bus link to Abbotsford, and Abbotsford has wanted a link to Langley, our transportation issues are more common,” she said. Froese said the Township is waiting for a B.C. government audit expected in August that will show whether TransLink has the funds to expand its rapid bus system to Langley. The Health Sciences Association of B.C. has joined Chilliwack hospital doctors and community leaders criticizing the decision to replace a rehab unit at Chilliwack General with an outpatient service. “Doctors and rehab specialists were not consulted about this closure,” said HSABC President Reid Johnston. “Without consulting the front line workers,” he said, Fraser Health Authority officials “are not going to understand the implications of what they’re going to do.” Which echoes the concern of doctors at CGH that the closure was “not carefully thought out” in terms of the impact on patient care and on other hospital departments that sent patients recovering from the likes of surgery or strokes to the rehab unit. Dr. Ken Hirst, who heads CGH’s department of general medical practices, told The Progress in an earlier interview that rehab patients are often elderly and may not recover at home due to the lack of family or community support networks. If they now need to return to hospital, he said, it will “lessen the availability of surgical and medical beds.” “It makes the hospital even more inefficient in its ability to deliver what it should be doing, which is acute care,” he said.

The evacuation order came last week as the waters started spilling over the banks, but the Gills stayed to try to save their home. They’ve been sleeping in shifts and sharing the sandbagging and pump duties, with the assistance of some very helpful neighbours. “When the water broke, they were there,” Gill added. Fraser River levels along the East Dike stabilized somewhat over the weekend, said city officials, after less rain fell than predicted, and Hope river levels remain constant. Around the clock security was put in place to prevent public access to the closed roads leading to the Carey Point area, as media and curious onlookers keep trying to gain access. “Please avoid this area and the riverside in general,” said city spokesperson Starlee Renton. “The bank is very unstable and a high risk to public safety.”

Johnston said that program leaders without clinical experience are making decisions at health authorities under pressure to cut costs. Those decisions “might make business sense, but not health care sense,” he said. “If the goal (at CGH) was to save money, there might be other ways to do that other than just shutting down the (rehab) service,” he said, a move that therapists and social workers represented by the HSABC were “willing” to look at, had they been asked. Johnston also pointed out that the $800,000 saved by the FHA in closing the rehab unit will now leave the community and be spent elsewhere in the system. “The people of Chilliwack might want to say something about that,” he said. FHA spokesman Roy Thorpe-

Dorward said the health authority is “taking the feedback seriously” about the lack of consultation. “We’re looking carefully at how we can do things differently when we make program changes like this,” he said. However, to date there are no changes in rolling out the new outpatient service, which the FHA describes as an “addition” to rehab options, rather than a cutback. No patients currently in the rehab unit will be moved, but in the future those patients who need in-hospital rehab will be sent to Abbotsford, and the rest will use the outpatient service. FHA officials say better health outcomes are obtained when patients go home. A “patient coordinator” will address transportation concerns of those in “hardship situations,” ThorpeDorward said.

The allure of the Fraser River is a powerful thing, especially as it approaches levels not seen here in 40 years. But it can also be dangerous. Both city and provincial officials are urging residents to stay away from the swollen rivers. And with good reason. We’ve already seen one death in B.C. Edward Posnikoff, 72, was standing on a bridge that was swept away near his home in the Crescent Valley near Nelson Saturday evening. That tragedy prompted Chris Duffy of Emergency Management B.C. to highlight the danger of high river levels, unstable banks and debris. He’s warning people to stay clear of streams and rivers. His concern echoes what the City of Chilliwack said all last week. The river banks are no place for curious onlookers. Said Chilliwack emergency co-ordinator Jim MacDonald: “What looks like stable ground, may not in fact be stable. “When our staff are required to work on dicey ground like that they are wearing life jackets, he told The Progress. “That’s how seriously we take it.” Even under normal conditions a river can be a dangerous place. Nearly every year there are reports of fishermen being swept away after slipping on the muddy banks. With the Fraser running as fast as it is, one mistake could be fatal. True, the Fraser River is an awesome sight right now. But swift-moving water needs to be treated with respect. Getting a closer look is not worth a lost life. ~ Black Press

World leaders bring no new ideas to Rio summit The Rio+20 was a complete nonstarter. Despite all the movers and shakers from 188 nations, states and NGOs, 100 world leaders, and 45,000 others of varying interests, the best the delegates could come up with was to re-affirm what they’ve re-affirmed in the past, i.e., work toward sustainable development defined two decades ago at the first UN Earth Summit in Rio. Nothing has changed. It’s just a revolving door of promises to have a conference to re-affirm the need for a conference to agree to work toward sustainable development at the next conference. So why is Peter Kent, Canada’s environment minister, happy? He doesn’t have to do anything. After all, the feds did a carte blanche job of weakening everything environmental in the Omnibus Bill C-38. Meanwhile, the world is changing.

The delegates should have paid more attention to the research of 22 biologists, ecologists, complex-systems theoreticians, geologists, and paleontologists from the U.S., Canada, South America and Europe, who studied the consequences of human development and the impact of global warming. In the lead-up to the Conference, they warned that Margaret population growth, widespread EVANS destruction of natural ecosystems, and climate change are adding up to a perfect storm that will drive the planet to irreversible change. “It really will be a new world, biologically, at that point,” warned Andrew Barnosky, professor of integrative biology at the University of California, Berkeley,

and lead author of a review paper published this month in the prestigious journal, Nature. “The data suggests that there will be a reduction in biodiversity and severe impacts on much of what we depend on to sustain our quality of life, including, for example, fisheries, agriculture, forest products and clean water. This could happen within a few generations.” The scientists took the cause and effect of past global changes and compared them with current processes to assess the future. They saw fundamental shifts in the disappearance of species and major disruptions in agricultural production. The delegates should have read another international study that included the U.S. Canada (UBC and McGill universities) U.K., Sweden and Switzerland and published in Nature in May. Fifty studies of 1,634 plant species across four continents showed plants are

flowering and leafing as much as over eight times faster than previously predicted. That forebodes consequences to ecosystems, pollination, migrations, and animal and plant behaviour patterns. While global warming predictions are that Canada could benefit from warmer, longer growing seasons and greater production, all that depends on rainfall patterns. There are lessons to be learned from Australia’s enduring drought and water supply dilemmas. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the world remains on a warming curve. Despite the fact that the Pacific Northwest has been either normal or cooler than normal this spring, the globally averaged temperature for May 2012 marked the second warmest May since record keeping began in 1880. Down a dangerous path Based on unhappy experiences of dying loved ones, your columnist Margaret Evans is pleased with the recent Carter case ruling in favour of assisted suicide. (Rekindling the debate over doctor-assisted suicide, Chilliwack Progress, June 19.) I would like to offer a contrary view based on my experience as a family physician. One person’s right can become another person’s obligation. When patients have the right to choose euthanasia, this sends an implicit message that some lives aren’t worth living. Frail elderly, handicapped, and cancer patients can easily perceive that society doesn’t want them around, when

they can instead choose to die “with dignity.” It is a short step from believing that they can choose dying to believing that they should choose dying. We have come a long way in palliative care. I believe this is the greatest medical advance that I’ve observed during my career in medicine. Sure, there’s always room for improvement, but I’ve never heard a negative word about the care given to dying patients in our hospice. Dying in hospice, surrounded by loved ones, with good symptom control, can actually be a beautiful thing to witness. The disease causes death, not some medic with a lethal syringe.

The Canadian Medical Association has consistently voted against physician-assisted suicide. Why is this? Are physicians cruel sadists who want our patients to suffer? No. We believe that palliative care is a better option. We never want patients to wonder whether their doctor will be trying to heal or trying to kill. We take an oath about this proscription against killing, and have done so ever since Hippocrates. Sometimes individual rights are trumped by the common good. In the matter of physicianassisted suicide, this in one of those times. Howard Bright, MD

School zone speed

In praise of kindness

I was hoping to use you as a medium to the public to shine a spot light on people speeding in school zones. My son attends Vedder Elementary School on Promontory Road. This road has heavier traffic than some of the busy roads in Burnaby where we used to live. It sickens me to see people that are in such a hurry throughout the day that they are more than willing to put my child (and all the other students) lives at risk. Besides the posted speed limit/school zone signs and the random speed traps, people just don’t seem to get it. What is it going to take for drivers to take note, the fatality of someone’s child? I certainly hope that with the summer season upon us drivers make note that kids are going to be everywhere and to pay attention when driving.....Don’t speed! I hope to see progress in this matter in the fall when our beloved children return to school.

For reasons unknown even to me, I left my wedding band sitting on the table at the Tim Horton’s in Vedder Crossing on Wednesday morning after enjoying breakfast with a friend. I didn’t notice it missing until I was sitting in a doctor’s waiting room in Abbotsford. I couldn’t return to Tim Horton’s until 5:30, and after asking if it had been turned in, the lovely manager kindly retrieved it from where it was openly sitting on a shelf in the back. She had no idea who had found it, and so I just want to say a hearty and humble thank-you to the kind soul who rescued my ring and saved me a lot of potential grief and heartache, and to those of you who had opportunity to pocket it. Thank-you for your integrity and honesty. May you all be blessed as you blessed me.

Steffens (One Day at a Time) Tony Hurley (Mr. Bunny) and Rolf Zeller (Wayward Wind) to the innovative rendition of El Condor Pasa by Ken Reeves, the emotionally charged choices of Bob Martin (You don’t have to love me anymore), Roger Johnson (Burning Bridges), Barrie Randle (I Believe) and the electrifying delivery by Alex Reed (Mack the Knife), the entire production was simply terrific. These men exemplify all that is so vital and wonderful about

Chilliwack and its seniors. The judges, Paula De-Witt Krause, Trevor McDonald and Mayor Sharon Gaetz provided encouraging assessments of each of the performances. Selecting winners from this impressive group was a daunting task. Sue Attrill emceed the proceedings with aplomb. Thank you, too, to Patsy Bartholomew and her Patsy Cline tribute. Also, the beautiful piano selections pre-

sented by Christine Millar kept the spirit of the audience buoyant. Kudos to the new young talent, Cambree Lovesy. Oregon State Police said in the report that Hallsworth was tr ying to return to the pavement when he lost control and was ejected from the motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at a hospital in Pendleton, Oregon.

Seniors escape fire in mobile home Two seniors escaped from a burning trailer residence Thursday whose main doorway was blocked by smoke and flames. The couple managed to escape unharmed using a second exit. But a pet dog, who alerted the couple to the fire, did not survive.

The Chilliwack fire department is reminding the public to have two ways out of a residence, and to practice home fire escape plans. Fire crews were called to the trailer in the 5700-block Unsworth Road at about 1:55 a.m. Although the trailer was engulfed in flames, firefight-

ers managed to keep the fire from spreading to adjacent trailers. A cat also perished in the fire, and there was extensive fire and smoke damage to the trailer. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it is not considered suspicious.

Contact centre to open early 2013 City of Chilliwack, BC Housing and Fraser Health reps were all on hand answering a range of questions about the scaled down version of the original operational plan. Beds for “low barrier” clients will not be available in the early phases, but the program will be staffed 24/7. The hope is that they’ll ramp up the services, as needed down the line, and possibly add much needed health care services like dental or foot

care in the long term, Hanson said. The former Days Inn motel site will be renovated later this year and the new facility will measure 5,444 square feet. The centre will contain 22 units of supportive housing on two floors, for people who are homeless or at risk of being homeless, with addiction and mental health issues. “Homelessness is a criteria for getting into the centre,” added Hanson. A part-time mental health nurse, and family physician and social

worker will be available, along with HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C services, adult addiction counselling, youth addiction counselling, employment services. A psychiatrist will offer services once a month. “An employment service consultant for those with multiple barriers is a new component,” said Hanson. At the Monday meeting, BC Housing officials confirmed commitments to providing ongoing operational funding, as well as an ongoing opera-

tional subsidies, which will help ensure the facility can provide staff coverage 24/7. Updated building and site plans were shared with project stakeholders Monday morning, and the renovations will not extend the footprint of the existing building, and there will be no addition. Denis Turco Architect Inc. of Vancouver designed the building alteration and renovations, and Mierau Contracting of Abbotsford will be the general contractor.

In building their robots, which look to be a cross between Disney’s Wally and Short Circuit’s No. 5, students are investigating the transfer of energy, force, speed and the effects of friction; measuring distance, circumference, and rotational speed using coordinate systems; regularly converting between decimals and fractions; programming and controlling input and output devises using wireless communication technology; and problem solving through building, testing and evaluating their robots. All without opening a textbook. “I see students who don’t do well in academics come in here and excel,” said teacher Ryan Gleeson. “They get As in this class, they lead the pack, they show other students how to do things.” Which is exactly what the Lego Group had in mind when it first developed the

The Progress If you had a chance to play with Lego in school, would you? For a group of students at Chilliwack middle school this year, that was a no-brainer: Why wouldn’t you, they asked. This year CMS included a Lego robotics component into its Grade 8 science curriculum that has students building robots from scratch and programming them to complete a variety of different skills and tasks. “When people ask me what I did at school today, I get to say I played with Lego,” said student Sarah Wayenberg, a playful smile forming on her face. But the thing is, while this course may look like mere child’s play, it’s actually heavily immersed in science and math concepts.

Mindstorms program. The company wanted to create a hands-on learning environment that would enable children, teens and adults to grasp science, technology, engineering and math concepts in a fun way. With a kit that includes user-friendly programmable software, electric motors, sensors and Lego-technic bricks, students are gaining skills that could be used in healthcare, engineering, computing, building and manufacturing industries. CMS student Jonathan Bearshell, who excels in shop classes, but admittedly struggles in academics, loved the hands-on aspect of this course. “It’s not so much reading from a textbook and writing things out, you’re actually using your hands and your mind to build something,” Bearshell said. And unlike other academic courses, mis-

takes are not penalized, but welcomed. “Figuring out these challenges takes mistakes, and many times more than one mistake, but when you finally get it, it sticks,” said student Natasha Farris. The strong results in class was a good motivator for a group of students to start CMS’s first robotics club. On a cool afternoon, just minutes after the last school bell had rung, while most of their friends were already setting foot home, or planning their evening’s activities, seven students in the robotics club were in a back room of the school’s shop class working on three of the nine challenges they’d learned throughout the year. The club had just come off a loss at the Skills Canada competition, but these kids weren’t wallowing, or even disappointed. Continued: LEGO/ p30

Playground funding comes through for Bernard Katie Bartel The Progress Bernard elementary is $50,000 closer to a new playground. The elementar y school was the only Chilliwack school listed in the B.C. Education Ministry’s latest playground funding announcement last Thursday. The government announced an additional $3.3 million would be provided for 80 schools across the province to repair, improve and replace playground structures. It was an announcement that couldn’t have come sooner for Bernard elementary, a school that’s endured a condemned playground for more than a year, and “didn’t hold out hope” for government

funding, “because we’ve been let down so many times.” Last year, the school’s Parents’ Advisor y Council was given one year to come up with a minimum of $60,000 to replace the intermediate playground, a woodstructure that’s more than 20 years old and is falling apart, rotting, and has bees nests all throughout. It was passed over for funding last September, when the government’s first phase of playground funding went to schools without playgrounds, which in Chilliwack included three middle schools. The second round of government funding in December also overlooked Bernard and instead went towards reimbursing school’s, including F.G. Leary ele-

mentary, McCammon traditional, and Tyson elementary, for funds they had raised towards playground replacements. Still, while Bernard elementary, an innercity school, didn’t have much faith in the government stepping up, it did in its community. The school’s PAC held coin drives, bottle drives, raffles, dinners and dances, craft fairs, a Ford Drive 4 UR Cause event, and has written several grant proposals in order to gain sufficient funds. The community came through. “A playground has been ordered and we hope to have it installed over the summer so that it will be ready for the new school year,” said Deana Reid, head of Bernard’s playground

Tourism Chilliwack officials said CultusLake. com has a social media component built right in to keep everyone in the loop. Price preaches commitment and discipline Each year, the Chilliwack Progress teams up with Brad Geary’s English 10 Honours class at Sardis secondary school, inviting students to write sports articles. The best of the best get published in the pages of the Progress sports section. Today’s is the third of four articles, detailing the busy but rewarding life of working mom Michelle Price.

Melissa McQuade, Sardis secondary school Juggling a full time job, a part time job and a home business, as well as chauffeuring her thirteen-year-old daughter around, doesn’t leave single mom Michelle Price much time for herself. Still, she has committed Friday evenings to the Jolly Miller women’s ball hockey team. Since age 10 Michelle has enjoyed playing all kinds of sports. Over the years she has played volleyball, basketball, baseball, soccer, as well as track, relays and marathons. At age 12 she became interested in hockey, and wanted to play street hockey with the boys in her neighbourhood. “Thinking they’d scare me off, they made me goalie,” Price explained, “For hours they whacked those hard orange plastic balls at me as hard as they could, and I went home exhausted. But the next day I returned, covered with many multi-

coloured bruises, still wanting to play with them. I earned their respect and convinced them that I was worthy, and from then on they let me play.” Michelle is forever in the world of men, working the day shift at Langley Concrete where she is the only woman in her division. At night she deals with all sorts of people as she works at the Rainbow Gas Station in Yarrow. Price enjoys playing hockey because she can let off steam without hitting others. Although they have neither the coaching, nor the pay given to professional players, Price is happy. They play with great unity, this team of women, and they can be as aggressive as men at times. The whole team has made a commitment to play, not because of money, but for the joy of playing, and of course winning. These girls may not have the expensive coaching, but they are still skilled. This small-league team averages 26 games per year, competing with 10 other teams. Of the two years Michelle has played, she is positive that this year was a lot better than last year. She hopes next year will be better still. “Last year they lacked commitment,” she explained, “You don’t play your best if you lack commitment, especially if you just don’t show up. It’s really hard to play

a game if you have only six players show up, but we had to, and we survived.” The whole team was ecstatic when they were the winning team in last year’s tournament. Both the members of the Jolly Miller team and their friends and family rejoiced, with many hugs and back-

slaps exchanged. Even though the games hadn’t been watched by hundreds of screaming fans, the victory was still sweet and they were proud of themselves. All week long Price looks forward to getting together with her ‘sisters-in-hockey,’ to encourage them and ele-

vate their spirits. When asked what advice she had for all those considering joining a sports team she said, “You must be committed and set apart the time you need to practice so you don’t let your team down. You need to be disciplined in keeping to your schedule. If you are to be any good you

must listen to and obey the instructions of your leaders. You must know your part and do it to the best of your ability.” If you do, you can have success just like Price, a woman who provides living proof that you’re never too busy to get involved in community sport.

UFV scoring star following coach to Alberta Dan Kinvig, Black Press On Feb. 25, Joel Friesen hit one of the biggest shots in UFV basketball history – a buzzer-beating threepointer to lift the Cascades to a 69-68 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns and into the Canada West Final Four. In that euphoric moment, few people – including Friesen himself – could have imagined that it would be the last shot the Abbotsford native would hit at the Envision Athletic Centre as a member of the Cascades.

But on June 4, head coach Barnaby Craddock departed UFV to take over the men’s basketball program at the University of Alberta, and Friesen told The News this week that he’s decided to follow him to Edmonton. The 6’4” guard will have to redshirt the upcoming season due to transfer rules, but he’ll be eligible to make his Golden Bears debut in 2013-14. Friesen, a Canada West first team all-star last season after leading the Cascades with 16.8 points per game, described his departure as a gut-wrenching pro-

cess. “My heart and soul is in this community,” the 21-year-old said, thanking his former teammates, teachers and coaches for building into his life over the years. “It’s a lot tougher to even think about (transferring) than most people would think. “I just tried to weigh out everything that I think is going to be the best opportunity for me to be successful as more than just a basketball player, but as a man and in my future career past university.” When Friesen signed with the Cascades after helping the Yale Lions

win a B.C. AAA high school title in 2008, he was arguably the most highly touted recruit in the program’s history. Over the course of three seasons at UFV, he grew into a bona fide star at the university level – a hometown boy who made good. His exit strips a key component from a Cascades team which had been expected to contend for a national title after a breakthrough 2011-12 campaign. UFV won the Canada West silver medal and finished fourth at CIS nationals in Halifax, and all five starters were set to return.

Friesen said Craddock’s departure caused him to evaluate his options. His goal is to become a high school teacher, teaching phys-ed and/or French, but he’d been unable to switch from UFV’s bachelor of arts program to kinesiology after applying multiple times. At the U of A, he’s already been accepted into the faculty of education. Friesen, who has two years of basketball eligibility left, emphasized that his departure shouldn’t be interpreted as dissatisfaction with the hiring of former

assistant coach Adam Friesen (no relation) to replace Craddock. “Adam has been a huge part of my basketball life,” Friesen said, alluding to the fact that his game matured at Yale Secondary under the tutelage of Adam and his father Al. “I know he’s going to do a great job (at UFV).” Adam Friesen said he tried to convince Joel to stay on the basis of his familiarity with the team and the quality of it. He noted that with Friesen out of the picture, fellow Yale Secondary alums Jordan Blackman and Nathan Kendall will have to step up.

“He made his decision,” Adam Friesen said of Joel, “and we wish him the best.” Friesen said most of his former UFV teammates “seemed to understand” when he informed them he was transferring, but the reaction hasn’t been universally positive. “It’s been tough, because you’ve got people pulling on your heartstrings,” he said. “The people who really do know me and have talked to me about why I’m leaving, they understand. The people who just think that I’m being selfish, they must not know me that well.”

Habscheid relinquishes roles in Victoria Eric J. Welsh, The Progress Marc Habscheid is out as head coach and general manager of the Western Hockey League’s Victoria Royals. The team issued a news release on Friday that presents the change as a promotion of sorts for the former Chilliwack Bruins bench boss. According to the

release, Habscheid is “taking on a new executive role within GSL to assist GSL in developing other hockey related businesses.” GSL Holdings Limited is the parent company of RG Properties and the Royals. Jujhair Khaira was the first BCHLer off the board at the National Hockey League entry draft, going to the Edmonton Oilers in the third round (63rd overall). The Cloverdale native was one of five BCHL skaters picked by NHL teams. Powell River Kings goaltender Sean Maguire was next, selected in the fourth round (113th overall) by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Merritt Centennials defenceman Reece Wilcox went in the fifth round (141st over-

all), drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers. The New Jersey Devils went to the BCHL well in the fifth round, selecting Coquitlam Express forward Alex Kerfoot 150th overall. The Vancouver Canucks took Victoria Grizzlies for ward Wesley Myron in the sixth round (177th overall). Maguire and Myron are both committed to Boston University for the 2012-13 season, and Khaira is committed to Michigan Tech. Wilcox is committed to Cornell. A BCHL graduate was also selected on the weekend. Ex-Penticton Vee and current University of Denver skater Joey Laleggia was drafted by Edmonton in the fifth round (124rd overall).

Chilliwack completed the sweep in Semiahmoo Saturday night, taking a 7-4 final. ✞ Obituaries CUDDEFORD Constance Primrose nee Morgan Constance Primrose Cuddeford passed away peacefully on the 18th of June at the Cascades CUDDEFORD Hospice at the age of 92. Born in England on the 19th of April 1920 she immigrated to Canada in 1928 with her mother Minnie Morgan and brother Robert Morgan and joined up with her brother Walter in Winnipeg. In 1943 she moved to Burnaby/ Vancouver, BC via Terrace BC where she lived most of her life before moving to Chilliwack in 2008. She is survived by her three children Fred Berge and his wife Myrna, Connie Metcalfe (nee Vitcoe) and her husband Robert, and Shirley Stewart (nee Vitcoe) and her husband Peter Heide. Four grandchildren Cheryl Berge and her husband Brian Feamcombe, Stewart Berge and his wife Kelly, Gordon Stewart and Gregory Stewart. And ﬁve great grand children Hailey, Chloe, Miles, and Simon Berge the children of Stewart and Kelly Berge and Jordan Stewart the son of Gordon Stewart She also has three nephews and a niece. William Slaughter from Burnaby and Robert Morgan from Surrey and Jimmy and Joan Morgan from Winnipeg, Manitoba. And her sister-in-law Audrey Cuddeford from New Westminster. Constance was a dedicated mother and wife to her children and four husbands who predeceased her: John Berge, Frank Vitcoe, Mike Maxwell,and John Cuddeford. As a working mother she worked many years for the Goodwill Industries in Vancouver before becoming a ceramicist and operating her own business. Later she became an instrutor for the Burnaby Community Centre until her retirement in 1993. Constance was a beautiful and lovely lady. She helped and befriended many people throughout her life She was loved and will be missed by her family and friends.. During her time in Chilliwack she thoroughly enjoyed the friendship she made with Time-Out, Lions Senior Support, and NetCare. And special thanks to Cascades Hospice who provided her with excellent care and comfort the last days of her life. A Memorial service will be held at a time and location to be speciﬁed. Dorothy Barbara MacKinnon passed away peacefully on June 22, 2012 at Chilliwack Hospital MACKINNON at the age of 82 years. Dorothy married her childhood sweetheart Bud MacKinnon on January 18, 1952. Bud joined the army and they moved to Chilliwack where they raised their two daughters and met their many life-long friends. Dorothy managed the Dogwood Den Lounge on the Chilliwack Army Base for many years, was a homemaker and support to her husband in all his endeavors. Nothing was as important to her than her family and friends. She will be sadly missed by her daughters Bonnie (Bill) Johnson of Sackville, NB and Carol “Babe” (Ron) Derksen of Chilliwack, BC; grandchildren Angela van Erp, Sharla (Quinn) Glock, Brent Derksen, Deanna (Joshua) Davyduke, Tyrel Johnson, Alana Johnson, and Kyle Johnson; great grandchildren Joshua Glock, Adam Glock, Jaedyn van Erp, Taryn van Erp, Hudson Davyduke, Maddex Johnson, Mylah Melanson, Lexen Melanson, Ethan Johnson, and Rhys Johnson; and her brother Percy (Joyce) Tower of Sackville, NB. MILLER Frank James January 4, 1930 – June 13, 2012 F r a n k passed away in his Chilliwack home after a brave effort to recover from a November MILLER 2010 accident that left him with severe burns. Born in Innisfail, Alberta, as a young man Frank moved to Richmond where he built his own home, worked as a lithographer, and raised a family with his first wife, Gloria (Watson). After retiring, he moved to Chilliwack with his second wife, Annie May (Powell) and as snowbirds, they travelled each winter to their second home in El Centro, California. Frank was happiest outdoors, especially “up country” at his Horse Lake cabin near 100 Mile House. He is survived by his wife Annie May, daughters Sandra (Al) Gardiner and Patricia (Stan Guenther) Miller, sons, Robert (Gillian) Miller and Chris Miller, and 11 grandchildren. WEIR Joan Marlene (nee Beaton) Joan Marlene Weir, born July 12, 1946 in North Battleford, Sask., died June 20, 2012 in ChilliWEIR wack, BC following a short and hurried battle with chronic lung disease. Survived by her sons David (Liz), and Michael; grandchildren Isabella and Mason; aunts Ethel, Pearl, Amy and Marg; cousins Sharon, Brad, and Ed to name a few; sistersin-law Barb (Bill) and Loraine; nieces Colleen, Lisa and Lori; and nephews Al and Hugh. Joan was pre-deceased by her husband Richard and parents Russell and Elene. Joan trained as a nurse at Royal Columbian Hospital’s nursing school, graduating in 1967 as a member of Class 67B, and later obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Victoria. She worked on many different services throughout her nursing and nursing administration career, and dedicated nearly two decades building and contributing to the Palliative Care program in Chilliwack and Fraser Health. Away from the hospital, Joan loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and her many friends. She enjoyed life-long passions for travelling, entertaining and keeping photo albums. Later in life she discovered passions for golf and gardening. Joan retired from nursing in May 2011 and was looking forward to many years travelling, golfing, gardening, and laughing with family and friends before illness fell her far too soon. The family wishes to thank Dr. Rod MacFadyen, Teasa MacFadyen, Dr. Ron Bull and the Palliative Care team, Dr. Phillip Weatherston, Sharon Meissner, Heidi Liebe, Martha Loewen, Marilyn Hannis and all the friends who stopped in and brought food. A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, June 27, starting at 12 noon, at the Best Western Rainbow Country Inn in Chilliwack.
