A return to Abby Senior Newly built school adopts previous name The Abbotsford board of education has announced that the district’s newest school will return to its roots. The newly rebuilt school, currently known as Abbotsford Collegiate, will be named Abbotsford Senior Secondary – as it was known from 1955 to 2006 – starting this September. As well, the neighbourhood learning centre that is part of the facility will be known as the Sweeney Neighbourhood Centre, in honor of the family’s long-time involvement in education and the community. Ronald Sweeney Sr. taught at Abby Senior for 28 years, while his wife was a substitute teacher. His son, Ron Jr., recently retired after a 35-year career. The Sweeney Family Singers have performed at community events and fundraisers for many years, raising more than $50,000 for charities. Names have also been given to two new playing fields.

The revamped grass field will be known as Barry Stewart Field in honour of the teacher and sports coach of 35 years. Stewart, almost 80, currently coaches a basketball team at Robert Bateman Secondary. John Sutherland, chair of the board of education, said the names were chosen through a committee which held discus-

sions with people associated to the school – past and present – as well as through an online survey that received 500 responses. Principal Lance McDonald said there was a “groundswell of support” to bring back the Abby Senior name. “I know a lot of our students and staff will be pleased with this news, as they anticipate coming back to the ‘new’ Abbotsford Senior Secondary in September,” he said. The name for the new combined city and school library located at the school will be announced on Canada Day by Mayor Bruce Banman. A grand re-opening for all the facilities will be held following completion of the buildings and fields, scheduled for next spring. In the meantime, opening events may be held at the individual facilities in the fall or winter. The school is located at 2329 Crescent Way.

A 48-year-old Abbotsford man has been charged with six child pornography offences. Crown counsel approved the charges Thursday after police arrested Donald Kenneth Petne, an Abbotsford tow truck driver. In March 2012, the Abbotsford Police Department’s major crime unit began investigating Petne, who had allegedly been using the Internet and communicating over social media and via chat rooms in order to obtain and exchange child pornography.

He said police would have preferred to have a conservation ofﬁcer on scene with the

proper equipment and training to handle the situation. “Police are here to deal with people,” he said. Conservation officer Don Stahl said he set two live traps for the bear – one on Wednesday near Pratt Road, and a second on Saturday in the Auguston area. In both cases, the bear had been in residential yards. However, he said catching and releasing the bear was not an option after its behaviour on Sunday. Up to that point, it was scared away by people. By Sunday it was not scared

away even after being peppersprayed. Going on decks, and even scratching on windows, is simply too close to humans. “If we would have captured that bear, it would have been put down,” said Stahl. “We completely support the police in their decision.” Stahl said a CO did return a call about the bear at about 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, but was told it had left the area. It returned later that night. Stahl is conﬁdent it was the same bear seen in urban areas earlier this month.

Residents of Glen Valley have been allowed to return to their homes as Fraser River water levels have stabilized. However, it could be a short stay. He said residents in the area were “happy to go back” even if it

may only be for a few days. The two homes still under the evacuation order are located at the far east and far west of River Road where the flood risk is still high. The portion of River Road east of Bradner Road is open to local traffic only. The rest of River Road is open to passenger vehicles only and is limited to one lane in some areas. A temporary court fix

Recently, a 20-year-old man from Surrey received a month in jail for his part in the Stanley Cup riots, which took place just over a year ago. Many people are hoping this sets a precedent for future sentencing, and it should. A one-month term for taking part in a riot, in which millions of dollars in property damage was done, police were assaulted, 150 were injured and the global reputation of the Vancouver area was severely damaged, is light punishment. However, it is likely that many of those charged will not receive any punishment. Their cases may well be thrown out of court because of excessive delay, due to the severely plugged nature of the court system. If a case is delayed for 18 months or longer, through no fault of the defence, it is quite likely it will not come to trial. This is unacceptable. While it says volumes about the state of the court system, something that few people pay

attention to unless they are directly involved, it sends a bad message to the rioters. It tells them that they should do all they can to delay the process until they are charged. And, they should not plead guilty. As a result, they may see their case dropped. The provincial government should set up a temporary court which can solely deal with riot cases. Everyone who is charged in connection with the riot should face trial, and do time if found guilty. If such a temporary court proves to work well, it could be used in other situations – such as to relieve system congestion in speciﬁc areas. If rioters are able to get off without any consequences because of a backlog of cases, the criminal justice system needs some creative ﬁxing. The province can do something about this – now. Authority must trump lawlessness. – Black Press

Other Hand Music has never been a big part of my life … I can’t remember the lyrics to my favorite songs seconds after hearing them, despite occasionally being able to sing along while they’re playing on the stereo. But their sounds, and some of the words, do stick in my memory. For instance, Willie Nelson’s “Don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys” – fortunately for ﬁnancial reasons, despite an inner desire to have done what he urged against, I followed a different path. I did, and still do occasionally, chase cows on horseback, and have had for most of my life more than a few of the cowboy’s necessary “vehicles” adorning my pastures. I also had a memorable connection to the vocals of Janis Joplin and others, but one singer who really stirred me sang slow and sultry.

The lyrics that ﬂowed from her evocative of places and things … “Southern Rain” came to mind during a horrendous downpour in Alabama that forced me, and every other driver on the road, to pull over until the torrent subsided. Her “Horse in the country” conjured thoughts of inviting her over to see mine, because in the early 1990s, she was named “one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world,” by People Magazine no less. With that on the resume, who wouldn’t want to have her visit? Well, in a manner of speaking and at least 20 years later, that ﬁnally occurred. There on the stage of the Abbotsford Arts and Entertainment Centre was Margo Timmins, she of the beautiful people and lead of the Cowboy Junkies. And I was bitterly disappointed. Not that her beauty, though I was too far away to notice if all the glam still remained, was a letdown. It was the sound. I couldn’t hear her voice over the bashing of the band which was, in a word, poor!

To be fair, however, it may not have been “The Junkies” themselves so much as it was the terrible acoustic production by their sound crew. All I heard was a cacophonous and overpowering drone, when I should have been hearing drops of melodic

The Cowboy Junkies were, by the way, the front band for John (no longer Cougar) Mellencamp, who was able to captivate both in vocal clarity and nonoverwhelming instrumental backup. boys not at all. And Margo must have, should have, been disappointed. The Cowboy Junkies are/were a folksy/blues band made up of Margo, her two brothers and a friend. They’ve been nominated for Juno Awards, had their songs used as themes in major movies. Even the town of Timmins, Ontario is named after their family. Sure, Mellencamp was the headliner and lived up to expectations, but I had hoped for a lot more from what was once an iconic Canadian band. So sad, I’ll just have to live with the memories of those great songs of many years ago. And remember Margo as she, and her voice, once was. Because that’s why you go to concerts, not to be a music critic, of which I am not, but to hear the tunes that generated emotions and recalled the memories of things and places past. And that’s why, if Willie Nelson ever makes it to the musical backwater that is Abbotsford, I’ll go see him. If nothing else, his words and acoustic guitar will give cause to me still having “ﬁeld ornaments” and a room full of saddles. markrushton@abbynews.com

An inspirational woman

The Fraser experience has already waited. The Mighty Fraser River, the backbone of the Valley, has slowly but inexorably been reduced to an industrial highway. Except for a few disconnected parks and derelict boat launches, public access is difficult or impossible. For all our talk, we have isolated ourselves from the Fraser and turned our backs on all of the opportunities the river can create. The anonymous author of the “Experience can wait” editorial feels that the Experience the Fraser project is not worth the cost, that it will not generate any financial return for the “taxpayers.” The author has become so focused on financial value that he has forgotten about values of other kinds. The Experience the Fraser project proposes to bring the human aspect back to the river. In so doing, the Fraser River will change from something we briefly glimpse between waterfront industries to the centerpiece of our communities. And we will all be better off for it. Remi Masson

and her only regret is she can no longer do them. Her eyesight is failing somewhat. She wears hearing aids and walks with a cane, but she is still upright. The Abbotsford Hospital Auxiliary honoured her with a framed certificate for 60 years of service. I presented this to her, and she was so pleased. She has sewn and knitted for our auxiliary and others over the years. She told me that she made a

christening gown that was rented out at $5 each time until it was finally put in a shadow box and displayed in the gift shop. This charming woman is truly our own Abbotsford gem, and we should be honoured to have her among us, and may she continue to be in our midst for a very long time. Abbotsford Police are searching for a man who is believed to have committed an indecent act. Const. Ian MacDonald said that on June 15 at 10:20 a.m., a witness observed a man standing near a community mailbox in the area of McKinley Drive and Waterton Crescent. The man had his shorts down at his ankles and appeared to be holding and exposing himself. The witness feared that the man was looking in the direction of a neighbouring elementary school. She i m m e d i a t e l y A police artistâ€™s composite drawing of the suspect. went home and called police. Patrol officers attended the area and spoke with residents and school administrators. The suspect was not located and no other neighbours who were canvassed had witnessed the incident or had seen the man. Parents, however, were notified about the occurrence. In the days that followed, the witness observed the suspect again, although not engaged in an indecent act or exposing himself. For the second time, officers looked for the man and an advisory was issued to parents. Police have issued a composite sketch of the suspect, who is described as a dark-toned Caucasian man in his 20s with short brown hair with a small patch of beard running from lip to chin. He is about 6â€™1â€? tall, medium build with blemishes or pock marks on his cheeks and a scrape on his forehead. He also has a tattoo on one of his wrists. The suspect was wearing dark shorts and a brown T-shirt with a red logo on the first sighting and a brown hoodie and grey jogging pants during the second sighting. Anyone with information is asked to contact Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The city finished last year with a small surplus of $15,000 in its $150-million general operating budget. It also had a total of $92 million in long-term debt, according to the 2011 annual report brought before council on Monday. The report, which is required by the Community Charter, includes such items as audited financial statements (made public last month), tax exemptions provided by the city, a progress report on objectives and other data. Pat Soanes, general manager of

finance and corporate services, said the slight surplus means the city was under budget last year. As for the debt, the city paid $4.4 million in repayment in 2011 to bring the total down to the $92-million mark. Of that debt, $77.3 million is from Parks Recreation and Culture, and is related to the Plan A projects which included the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, The Reach art gallery and improvements to the Abbotsford Recreation Centre. The remainder of the debt is from the water fund ($9.1 million) and sewer fund ($5.7 million).

Provincial NDP leader Adrian Dix was in Abbotsford Saturday afternoon to introduce his party’s latest candidate for the 2013 provincial election. Sukhi Dhami, a 27-year-old farmer, will challenge current Liberal MLA Mike de Jong in the riding of Abbotsford West. Dhami was born in Chilliwack but has lived in Abbotsford for the past 15 years. He said winning in the riding will take work. “We are doing well in the polls, but I don’t believe in polls too much. You have to get in the community, do your due diligence and you’ve got to work with the people.”

Dhami is a graduate of W.J. Mouat Secondary and works in his family business, which consists of a nursery, garden centre and berry farm. He has been active in the community, helping to organize a local anti-HST rally and was involved in opposition to a P3 water system plan for Stave Lake. “This is a beginning for positive change in Abbotsford,” he said. Dix called Dhami a good choice for Abbotsford voters. “This young man is going to be a star in politics,” said Dix, adding Dhami will represent Abbotsford with “everything he has.” The next provincial election is scheduled for May 2013.

The recent Gutsy Walk held in Abbotsford raised more than $14,000 for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC). A man who was on bail for robbery charges in Chilliwack was handed a three-year jail term on June 18 for a similar offence in Abbotsford four months ago. Charles Anthony Heward, 25, pleaded guilty to robbing the Shell gas station at 2016 McCallum Rd. on Feb. 4. He produced, but did not use, a metal pipe during the incident. Police identified him through surveillance video that was captured before and during the robbery. Abbotsford Police Det. Kevin Murray said Heward did not cover his face while he was in the Husky gas station across the street just prior to the incident. He was wearing the identical clothing in video obtained from the Shell, and then used a cab – which he had called from the Husky – to make his escape. Murray said Heward was tracked to his Abbotsford residence from cab records and was arrested without incident. According to the provincial court database, Heward has several prior convictions, and has served jail time, for offences such as possession of stolen property, theft and break-and-enter.

Summer food fairs Two “summer food fairs” held this week at local grocery stores will benefit the Abbotsford C o m m u n i t y Services’ Food Bank. Some years ago an employee of a cat boarding facility brought into the hospital a cat boarder that was flat out and non-responsive. The cat was diabetic and the caregivers at the boarding facility religiously gave the cat her insulin every 12 hour as directed. Unfortunately the cat was not eating her normal amount of food, and thus was receiving too much insulin. As a consequence she became hypoglycemic. Luckily after three days of intensive treatment the cat did recover and could go home. After this cat went home, we knew the Fraser Valley area needed a place where owners

We pride ourselves in making sure every cat receives whatever they need to make their stay more comfortable; whether it is a “box” to hide in or a special treat to encourage them to eat. Presently we have an older diabetic cat staying with us for a long-term visit as his owner broke her arm. Joey, though eating and taking his medication, seemed very lonely. So Dr. Horvat’s cat came to visit, and now Brandon and Joey nap together and have a daily snuggle with a cat nip blanket – like we said, we do whatever is required to make our guests happy. Our boarding facility is located above the hospital away from the hustle and bustle of the clinic. We have a variety of rooms available – jungle rooms with windows to the outside, theme rooms with climbing trees and hiding boxes, and apartments with lofts. Despite years of public education, almost 70 per cent of the houses that caught fire in B.C. in recent years still did not have a working smoking alarm. Many of those were low-income homes, rental units, many on aboriginal reserves and other rural locations, according to a study of residential fire reports done by the University of the Fraser Valley. Seniors, disabled people and young children were at greater risk of dying in a house fire.

Justice Minister Shirley Bond and Social Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux revealed new support Monday for the B.C. government’s campaign to get a working smoke alarm in every home in the province. Smoke alarm maker Kidde Canada is donating 5,000 units with a retail value of $75,000 that will be distributed to B.C.’s most vulnerable populations this fall. And Black Press, whose publications reach 1.2 million B.C. homes, has pledged a public awareness advertising campaign worth $350,000 to remind people to install or

upgrade their smoke alarms. Surrey Fire Chief Len Garis, president of the Fire Chiefs Association of B.C., said the study used data from B.C.’s Office of the Fire Commissioner from 2006 to 2011. The study suggests that 69 lives could be saved each year if homes across Canada had working smoke detectors, he said. “Smoke alarms give you time to escape from the fire – it seems pretty simple, doesn’t it?” Garis told a news conference at the B.C. legislature. Summer has been slow in arriving, but the boys of summer are heating up in Abbotsford. Both of the Abbotsford Cardinals teams – the seniors and the juniors – are hitting their stride as the B.C. Premier Baseball League season progresses past the midway point. The senior Cards have engineered a remarkable turnaround around after a slow start. They came stumbling out of the gate, dropping 10 of their first 15 games, but they’ve been red-hot over the past month, and a pair of road wins on Sunday over the North Delta Blue Jays gave them a 12-2 record over their last 14 games. Prospects shortlisted for Team Pacific

A trio of Abbotsford hockey prospects have been named to the training camp for Team Pacific. Forwards Jake Virtanen, Matt Revel and Mitch Skapski – linemates with the Fraser Valley Bruins of the B.C. Major Midget League – made the roster for the camp,

from another team, the Flames retain the right to match. Goaltender Irving is coming off a rollercoaster 2011-12 campaign. He was stellar in the first half, backstopping the Heat to one of the best records in the AHL. Then in early December, a knee injury to Flames backup Henrik Karlsson opened the door for Irving to make his NHL debut. He performed well enough in limited action behind Miikka Kiprusoff that the Flames recalled him on several occasions to make spot starts even after Karlsson returned to health. But he hit a rough patch in March, as the travel grind of bouncing between Calgary and Abbotsford took its toll. He ended the season watching from the bench as Danny Taylor carried the load for the Heat in the playoffs. Irving finished with a 22-13-4-2 record, a 2.67 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage in Abbotsford. In seven appearances with Calgary, he went 1-3-3 with a 3.20 GAA and a .912 save percentage. Byron, a small-butspeedy centre, got off to a slow start offensively with the Heat last season. But he finished on a tear, racking up 10 points in his last eight regular season games after finding great chemistry on a line with Krys Kolanos and Dustin Sylvester. He ended up with 21 points (seven goals, 14 assists) in 39 AHL games. Byron also saw extended duty in Calgary, and registered three goals and two assists in 22 NHL contests. Aliu, a 6’3”, 220-pound power forward, turned around his career in Abbotsford last season. Acquired in a trade for John Negrin, he found a home on the Heat’s third line and contributed 10 goals and four assists in 42 games. He made his NHL debut late in the season, and scored two goals and added an assist in two games with the Flames. For mer Heat forwards Logan MacMillan and Ryley Grantham were not extended qualifying offers, which essentially ends their tenure in the organization. They become unrestricted free agents.

At the junior level, Abbotsford has been a longtime powerhouse – the Cards juniors won league titles in 2008 and ‘09, finished second in 2010, and made it as far as the semifinals in 2011. 2012 has been more of the same, as the juniors sit in third place with a 15-9 record. Head coach Shawn Besse has gotten terrific performances from a quartet of returning pitchers – J.J. Pankratz, Liam Kano-McGregor, Jordan Dobos and Emilio Foden – and above-average production at the plate from the team as a whole. Besse has been most pleased with the bluecollar attitude of the group. “The commitment to learning and getting better is what I really like,” he said. “They all like to do what’s best for each other, not just themselves.” The lone frustration for the Junior Cards has been the weather. They recently had four games in a row rained out, and after they finally got a game in on Sunday – a 5-2 win over the North Shore Junior Twins at DeLair Park – the second half of the doubleheader was suspended due to rain. “It wears on the kids more than myself, to a certain degree,”

HENRY Eva Of Abbotsford, BC. Passed away peacefully June 23, 2012 at the age of 97. Loving wife of the late Raymond Henry. She will be sadly missed by her sons John (Carole) Matt, Ernie (Karen) Matt, step-son Ron Henry and step-daughter Doreen (Ed) Prestayko, nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter, two nieces Louise (Ken) Sager and Bernice (Don) McBeth, as well as many other relatives and friends. Eva will be fondly remembered for her unwavering faith, her good humor and gentle nature. A memorial service will be held at Maranatha Baptist Church on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 12:30 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Maranatha Baptist Church.

MARTIN, James passed away peacefully at White Rock Hospice surrounded by family on June 21, 2012. Survived by his loving wife Martha of 52 years; his children Peter, Pauline and Kevin; and grandsons Gabriel, Michael, David, Matthew and Daniel; 1 brother, Bryce. Jim was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland and graduated from medical school, Queens University, Belfast. He came to Canada in 1958 as a General Practitioner for 7 years in Port Moody. From 1966 - 1970 he went to Toronto to specialize in Diagnostic Radiology. He came back to BC in 1970 and spent the majority of his years with Valley X-Ray. He worked as a Radiologist at Royal Columbian Hospital, MSA Hospital in Abbotsford, and Langley Memorial Hospital, where he served as Chief of Medical Staff. Jim was a dedicated volunteer ever since coming to Canada. He was honored as Knight of Grace, Order of St. John for his service with St. John Ambulance for 25 years, acting as Medical Coordinator for the Abbotsford Air Show, P.N.E. and other major events. He volunteered in Uganda to set up an X-Ray Department in two hospitals. In retirement, Jim volunteered with Canadian Food for Children and gave generously to numerous organizations. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday June 28, 2012 at 11am at Good Shepherd Church, 2250-150th St. Surrey, B.C. Interment will follow at Gardens of Gethsemani, 15800-32nd Ave. Surrey. PETRALI-LEGLER Mary Harriet December 21, 1919 June 21, 2012 Mary went to be with her Lord and Saviour on June 21st, 2012 at the age of 92. Mary was born in Ponte San Pietro, Italy, to Riccardo & Ilda LeglerTschudi, both of Swiss origin from the canton of Glarus. She was predeceased by her husband Sergio and her brothers Ricco and Fredy. She is survived by brother Franco, sister-in-laws Claude and Anna, and her children Folco, Elena, Guja, June and son-in laws Jack and Costante and daughter-in-law Sharon. She is also survived by her grandchildren Jed, Shiloh, Rachel, David, Marina, Eric, Silvia & Vanessa. Mary loved her flowers, fruit, vegetables and trees in her garden and her horses and pure bred Holsteins. She loved her art and even as a child always had a pad and a pencil nearby. She attended art school in Florence before getting married, took art classes at UFV in the seventies, and was an active member of her church and the Mission Arts Council and the Federation of Canadian Artists. Mary travelled the world. Thank you to her care givers at Ebenezer Home, Bevan Lodge and more recently with the family at Mission Memorial Hospital, Helen Juntilla and Dorothy Fraser. The funeral service will held Friday June 29th at 11 A.M. at Northside Community Church 33507 Dewdney Trunk Road Mission, BC. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Mission Arts Council. SCHMIDT Jan. 31, 1913 ~ June 22, 2012

Our wonderful Mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother is now with the Lord. We were all blessed to have her in our lives. Our loving Mother was born at Herbert, Sask., the daughter of Rev. George and Anna Buhler. At an early age Mother accepted the Lord Jesus as her personal Saviour and was baptized on June 5, 1927 by her father. On August 12, 1934 she was united in marriage with Jacob C. Schmidt at Herbert, Sask. Mother was a faithful wife and helpmate to our father who served as teacher, pastor, missionary and bishop with the Mennonite Conference. She was always there assisting father in their service to the Lord. This included much travel and many moves. In 1966 she and Dad were called by the Mission Board of the General Conference Mennonite Church to start a Bible School and Church in Mexico. They both described this period of their lives as “serving with great joy.” In January 1972 they moved to Abbotsford where Dad accepted the call to the Clearbrook Mennonite Church and Mother served as organist. She played the piano/organ in most places they served and was involved in ladies aides. She always played hostess to all the visiting ministers and missionaries. Mother is survived by two sons, Earl (Jean) in Victoria and Robert (Joyce) in Abbotsford / Phoenix; and three daughters, Carole (John) Neufeld of Kelowna, Ann Marie (Len) Schellenberg of Abbotsford and Lynette (Peter) Shenkaruk of Saskatoon; 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her loving husband, 2 sisters and 2 brothers, 1 grandchild and 1 son-in-law. We as a family are thankful that we were able to give our parents a month together in Hawaii where mother celebrated her 65th birthday. Father passed away at the airport in Honolulu, preparing to return home. We will miss you so much, Mother! You have left us with many great memories. We praise God for your life. You have now taken this wonderful trip to Heaven. We look forward to seeing you again in our Heavenly Father’s Home. Many thanks to the Tabor Home staff and residents for their friendship and caring. Seabird Island Band Employment Opportunity Posting POSITION TITLE: EMERGENCY SERVICES OFFICER POSITION SUMMARY: The Emergency Services Officer, under direction of the Public Works Manager, is a seasonal position working approximately 6 to 8 months per year working with the management team to ensure that the Band is adequately prepared for all potential emergencies (natural or manmade). The ESO will work with the management team and the maintenance department in an administrative capacity to facilitate the execution of emergency plans and to perform tasks related to planning sessions. QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: • Post Secondary education in a related field would be an asset • Familiarity with emergency services or emergency planning would be an asset • Proven excellence in Computer skills, including compiling and entering data, able to use Microsoft office suite and other applications. • Capable of providing high standard of service and records management. • Valid BC Driver’s License and Clear Criminal Record Check. • Knowledge of the Sto:lo culture, traditions and language is an asset. • Must have ability to remain calm in high stress and emergency situations PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: • Prep and plan meetings for the Emergency Services team • Increase awareness of the EST to membership and within the community through various mediums including workshops, presentations, written communications and on-line resources. • Recording minutes for all Emergency Services team meetings; communication of all action items; along with follow-up on action items. • Work with EST and Fire Department to plan emergency drills for staff and community • Build and maintain relationships with external emergency assistance providers (ie ambulance, police, search and rescue) • Ensure that emergency plan is continually updated and prepared for use when needed including keeping supplies stocked • Ensure that all prepared plans meet the requirements of associated bodies (ie health Canada, INAC, Worksafe BC) Pursuant to section 41 of the BC Human Rights Code, preference may be given to applicants of Aboriginal Ancestry. SUMMARY The Records Manager, under direction of the Finance Manager, will be responsible for the efﬁcient and effective organizational management of all electronic and paper based information. The position must determine the most appropriate storage, protection, retention, and access methods for all records and historical property of Seabird Island Band.

The Policy Analyst, under direction of the Band Manager, will be responsible for the research and analysis of information, consulting with stakeholders, Counsel, management, internal staff and technical experts, the development of options and preparation of recommendations on a wide range of policy projects.

Responsibilities will include the creation and maintenance of records management policies, the set-up, maintenance and review of records systems, and the standardization of information resources.

Responsibilities will include the coordination and implementation of operational policies, programs and strategies necessary to support the organizations overall plans and objectives. They will be capable of articulating sound policy advice both orally and in writing.

JOB DUTIES • Develop, implement and maintain the organizational management of electronic and/or paper based information and archive system. • Review, recommend, implement, and monitor records management policies, procedures and classification systems. • Manage the changeover from paper to electronic records management systems, where appropriate • Preserve Band history and heritage • Draft papers, prepare quarterly and ad hoc reports for Management and Council • Advise on highly complex legal and regulatory issues, often involving difficult judgments in controversial areas such as the Freedom of Information Act, and other national or regional legislation; • Manage and monitor records budgets and resources; REQUIREMENTS • Post-secondary degree in information management or related discipline. • 5 years of related experience in records retention management • Experience in conducting legal and regulatory research regarding all applicable regulations affecting retention of information as records • Proven Supervisory experience (leadership, delegation, coaching, mentoring, training) • Passion, personal alignment, and commitment to the goals of the Seabird Island Band. • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and accountability • Must be available to work some flexible schedules Pursuant to section 41 of the BC Human Rights Code, preference may be given to applicants of Aboriginal Ancestry.
