Fraser water levels to peak on weekend River expected to hit 6.38 m by Saturday

The rain and snowmelt that has been causing high water in the Fraser River system and flood watch warnings in Prince George and Chilliwack is not expected to create similar problems in Mission. The Fraser River gauge in Mission was measured at 5.86 metres Wednesday morning, up 0.59 metres from the previous week, and is predicted to peak at 6.38 metres by the weekend. But that is well below the 8.89metre height of the lower Fraser River dike system, so communities along the lower Fraser are not likely to experience flooding except for areas not protected by dikes. Environment Canada reports show a low pressure system off the B.C. coast that is expected to spread rain — potentially up to 15 mm — to the South Coast on Friday and Saturday.
School budget calls for staffing level reductions BY JASON ROESSLE Mission Record
A number of staff reductions and cost-cutting measures were unveiled at Tuesday night’s school board meeting where the proposed 201213 budget was out for the public to view. The $61-million budget was given the first two readings, while voting on the third will happen at a special meeting of the board June 26. But the vote was not unanimous.
Trustees Randy Cairns and Carol Hamilton voted against the budget, while Edie Heinrichs, Jim Taylor and Shelly Carter were in favour. Cairns said the staffing reductions worried him, due to potential complications with contracts and “legalities,” and that the level of administrative staff being let go (see story page three) “leaves us too thin at the administration level” to carry out the work. He also said the goodwill established over the years with working groups will be undone
and that student achievement will be negatively affected. Board vice-chair Taylor was blunt in his assessment of the district’s financial position: “We’re in bad financial shape. We have big problems and there are no good cuts,” he said. “Our belief is that we can spread the administrative work around the district.” He added that it was time the board looked at how to more fiscally responsibly carry out services for students.
Hamilton lodged her negative vote after stating that while she recognized the financial problems the school district faces, she didn’t “feel that the approach was balanced.” She said “people would feel better if they knew the transition plan.” One of the main cries from the public Tuesday evening was the loss of two elementary school counsellors, which some residents said put their children at risk. But at the budget presentation, board chair Heinrichs said a 0.6 full-
time equivalent (FTE) counsellor will be in place by September. “We’re not planning on leaving a hole there,” she said, and promised that staff has begun working on how children’s needs will be met, and that a plan will be created during the summer months. We want to create “better services, and affordable services,” Heinrichs added. “If we don’t make changes, See FURTHER Page 3

Admin layoffs aim to save $700K BY JASON ROESSLE Mission Record
In a bid to trim costs, an administrative restructuring will happen at Mission Public Schools District (MPSD). According to a district memo released Monday, the following positions will be eliminated, some effective the end of June and others by July: • Deputy superintendent: Brenda Lightburn • Director of instruction (student learning): Graham Black • Vice-principal (student services): Cyndie Anderson • Vice-principal (Riverside
College): Rick Fitch • Director of school operations: Stan Weir • Custodial manager: Bert Bastiaansen • Payroll supervisor: Marie Schultze • School business managers: Marie Powell and Mary Shurko The memo, signed by school superintendent Frank Dunham, noted Lightburn has been seconded to the Ministry of Education for a year, but will not be returning to MPSD afterwards. Anderson and Fitch will take other jobs in the district, while the remainder will be laid off.
The work will be split to others throughout the district, and will be finalized by September, said Dunham. “At this time we would like to express our sincere gratitude and thanks to all those named here for their commitment and dedication to Mission and their leadership in a variety of school and district roles within our school district. We wish them well in the years ahead,” read the memo. In an e-mail from trustee chair Edie Heinrichs, the changes are aimed at saving around $700,000. She said the board “inherited
a deficit of more than $900,000 with only three years to pay this back and have a projected shortfall of $1.2 million for next year.” Heinrichs also noted that exempt staff levels have been rising in the past few years and that “if some of these cuts had been made in the previous years’ shortfalls, we would not have had to cut as deep.” Net staff reductions Teachers: 10.2 FTE Education assistants: 6.65 FTE Supervision assistants: 1.9 FTE

we’ll be left with the same [problems].” The proposed 2012-13 budget calls for a number of reductions including nearly $700,000 in exempt staff wages, $45,000 from the communications budget, $575,000 from teaching staff — due to enrolment decline — and a drop of $177,000 for education assistants, among others, to arrive at $1.9 million in cuts. The district is also faced with $898,750 less in revenue due to a reduction in operating grants and other items, and had to find funds to cover about $456,000 in known expenditure changes. These included increases in employee benefits, vacation pay, WorkSafe and MSP premiums and more. Going forward The school district, as per provincial government request, must now submit three-year budget proposals, and some of the 2013-14 and 2014-15 initial ideas on cost savings were shown Tuesday. A balanced budget is required by law to be presented by school boards, and shortfalls are expected in the next three years: 2012-13, $1.2 million; 2013-14, $2.2 million; 2014-15, $3 million. To compensate in 2013-14, some proposed measures include engaging in a school closure process ($400,000 savings), decrease student transportation costs ($258,000) and move to a two-week spring break ($100,000 savings), plus more. In 2014-15, a further enrolment decline is still predicted, and possible teaching staff reductions would save $281,000, removing a lab assistant ($40,000 savings) and potentially consolidating the French Immersion program may trim $92,000 from the bottom line. Next meeting The board of trustees special meeting to carry out the third reading of the budget bylaw happens June 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Fraserview school library. If the public wishes to comment on the budget before that time, they can contact their individual school PACs, send e-mails or phone calls to individual trustees, or drop off letters to the school district administration office on Fourth Avenue.

Gravel public hearing June 26 BY ROBERT FREEMAN Black Press
Sparks are already flying as a bylaw to regulate gravel mining in the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) goes to public hearing next week. But there will not be a vote to adopt the bylaw at the June 26 meeting, which will go back to FVRD directors and staff for further work that could take the rest of the year to complete. “The newly developed bylaw will protect our region’s most sensitive areas and ensure that any gravel removal is carried out in the most sustainable and environmentally sound manner that has our public’s best interest in mind,” FVRD chair Sharon Gaetz said in a news release announcing the Chilliwack meeting. But Walter Neufeld, FVRD Citizens As-
sociation president, said unless the FVRD “moves rapidly to introduce measures for accountability, inclusion and transparency, it seems probable that impacted residents ... will take the gloves off.” He charged that FVRD directors are “being used as corporate whips to clear the way for corporate profit at the expense of ordinary citizens, their rights and the environment which sustains us all.” Even before Gaetz’s release, residents opposed to the Aggregate Pilot Project — which proposes a tri-colour mapping scheme where future gravel pits may be allowed — were scrapping with MLA Randy Hawes by e-mail. Hawes is a former FVRD chair and Minister of State for Mining who started APP negotiations back in 2004 with the gravel industry, the FVRD and the B.C. government. Lake Errock resident Reg Longmore accused Hawes in another e-mail of political

“double-speak” and “hiding the true facts” about the APP. “You have yet to give a satisfactory answer as to why the public were never allowed to participate in ‘behind closed door meetings’ that the aggregate industry were so obviously guiding,” Longmore wrote. But Hawes shot back that Longmore was “fear mongering,” when the APP will only increase the “scrutiny” of gravel pit operations. “The APP does not decrease the scrutiny that now takes place by the Ministry of Environment, DFO, and others and the same standards are to be met whether there is an APP or not,” Hawes wrote. “I fail to understand why you persist in spreading these falsehoods.” He said the APP is about planning future gravel operations, and gives local governments “much more say” in permit conditions over removal operation like noise and dust control.

An oasis for elderly animals BY ADRIAN MACNAIR Mission Record
A
white flash comes bounding up, the ragged moose plush toy in its mouth thrust forward inviting a tug-of-war with the exuberance typical of a hyperactive puppy. Mystic looks like any other two-year-old Samoyed-mix. She’s playful, affectionate, and frisky. She’s also palliative. Like most of the animals at Senior Animals In Need Today Society (SAINTS), Mystic’s days are short-numbered. Her previous owners gave her up when they learned she has a fatal genetic condition. “If you can’t handle it, own up to it and get your animal someplace safe,” says Maggie Calloway, a SAINTS volunteer. The little farm houses over 100 animals just north of municipal hall off Stave Lake Road and is a facility for elderly and disabled animals. Unwanted and unloved anymore, these dogs, cats, rabbits, cows, pigs, and other creatures find a new lease on life at SAINTS, with a roof over their heads, regular veterinary care, and all the animal companionship they could ever want. The animals’ ailments range from genetic conditions to sickness, disease, disabilities, blindness, or just old age. Yet
they live and play like any other animal, and it’s clear they long for human contact. SAINTS was started by Carol Hine in December 2004, who shares a small house, barn, and three outbuildings with dozens of animals. There is a field for the horses, cows, and donkey, and there’s even a pond with plenty of mud for the pigs. Calloway says the purpose of the shelter is to create as natural an environment as possible for the animals to enjoy. Many of the farm animals come from animal cruelty cases or situations where they’d simply be euthanized. One very friendly pig who comes over for a sniff was rescued after falling into the Pitt River and nearly drowned, says Calloway. Hence the name, Brad Pitt. Although SAINTS seems to have plenty of room, the shelter is operating at capacity. SAINTS annual costs run about $200,000, which includes veterinarian checkups, food, maintenance, security cameras, and equipment. Although there are three paid employees to do chores and care for the animals, they rely mainly on a huge contingent of loyal volunteers. Soon they will need to upgrade the perimeter fencing at a cost of $16,000 to keep animals from getting out or
Building permit on hold pending Monday meeting A building permit application for a pharmacy on First Avenue has been put on hold for 60 days, pending the outcome of a public hearing June 25. The hearing centres around council’s bylaw proposal to ban new pharmacies from First Avenue until such time as a downtown revitalization plan can be completed. Council had previously issued a 30-day hold on May 22 for the application at 33133 First Ave. submitted by Nandakumar Sambandam to develop a medical clinic and pharmacy.
predators from getting in (although SAINTS has one llama, which is a fierce defender of the property). Calloway started an initiative last fall called 1,000 Saints, a program which aims to get 1,000 people willing to donate $25 a month. She said the goal is to get stable funding so their work can continue. And while the organization has survived for seven years, it hasn’t been easy. “We actually lurk from crisis to crisis,” she said, adding the generosity of donors keeps them afloat. To learn more about SAINTS and visit the animals, there will be an

OPINION
Published and printed by Black Press Ltd. at Mission at 33047 First Ave., V2V 1G2
Proper debate needed While the lumping together of numerous pieces of federal legislation in one giant omnibus bill may not be precedent-setting, there is fear that doing so threatens to reduce democracy to mere window dressing. Stephen Harper’s Conservative government, still relatively young in its first majority, reduced the level of debate on specific issues relating to everything from environmental protection to military spending to multiculturalism. The concern is that sections of the bill pinpointed by hard-working MPs as troublesome could not possibly be given the time needed to discuss potential problems with implementation before regulations and budgets get put in place. It’s not just opposing MPs who were left scrambling by this tactic. Even Conservative MPs were forced to bone up on all aspects of the government’s budget legislation. Who’s got time for that? And how could we expect any of our elected representatives to be well-versed on even half of the legislation tabled? Meanwhile, Opposition and other MPs tabled 800 possible amendments to the bill, which no doubt caused further confusion and anxiety among this country’s lawmakers as the bill went through the debate process. The feds argued time is of the essence as they work to keep the economy from spiralling. Still, that is not reason enough to subvert the democratic process and allow for the kind of proper debate that Canadians have come to expect. To use a well-used phrase, this can only end badly, both for the continuity of services, checks and balances in this country and the preservation of the type of democracy we all voted for. – Victoria News

Choosing work instead of welfare
T
he B.C. government has taken some modest steps to tighten up the province’s income assistance system, and to encourage people to work when they are able to. With Premier Christy Clark swooping in to take credit, Social Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux unveiled changes that included fixing the worst mistake in BC Liberal policy. Cadieux acknowledged that B.C. was the only province that clawed back all earnings from employable welfare recipients, and she announced that from now on they will be able to earn up to $200 a month without penalty. The exemption for disabled people is increased from $500 to $800 a month. Another important change is requiring welfare recipients to file income tax returns. People can now do temporary work when it comes along, report the income and take advantage of the various tax credits that come from participating in society instead of just living off it. Any experience earning money is valuable experience. With baby boomers start-
Q
ing to retire in big numbers, the expected labour shortage has begun across Western Canada. And yet, increasing numbers of foreign workers are coming in to do farm and other work, while many young people are unemployed. Finance Minister Kevin Falcon took note of this during his budget preparations. Increasing numbers of young, employable people were applying for welfare in southern B.C., while jobs go begging in the booming northeast. Falcon mused about setting up a program To to provide training and plane fare for these people, an idea quickly dubbed “welfare air.” Another effort to get young people working is Jobfest, a rock-themed road show currently touring northern B.C. towns. It attracts young people with music and souvenirs like drumsticks and guitar picks, and offers them skills assessment using sexy iPad apps and graphics that depict
carpentry as cool. If Jobfest and welfare air sound a bit desperate, it’s because they are. They illustrate our society’s problem. We have a public school system where students pass whether they do the work or not. The culture assumes self-esteem is more important than achievement. The teachers’ union constantly sets an example that the way to get what you want is to stamp your feet and demand it from government. What do we expect young people to learn? And how easy is m it for B.C. to slip into a Greece-like tailspin, where a majority expects to be carried on the backs of the shrinking minority who do productive work? Old-timers might recall when Mike Harcourt’s NDP government took over from the allegedly miserly Social Credit regime and raised welfare rates. They compounded that mistake by relaxing eligibil-

ity rules and making it easier for employable people to stay on welfare. After a couple of years of this wealth redistribution, 10 per cent of the B.C. population was on welfare, with more piling on every day. Faced with the results of this staggering blunder, Harcourt lashed out at “cheats, deadbeats and varmints” scamming B.C. taxpayers and launched a crackdown on fraud. Later the NDP cut the basic rate for single employables to $500 a month. Today it stands at $610, and the NDP looks poised to repeat history. Surrey MLA Jagrup Brar did a month-long publicity stunt in January, living on welfare by wandering from shelter to food bank with TV cameras trailing behind. Brar would have been better off if welfare air had been available. Instead of learning to live off the burgeoning urban handout industry, he could have gone up to Dawson Creek or Fort St. John and worked as a labourer. Program for all families Editor, The Record: Re: Blessings in a Backpack fundraiser June 2 at pub, May 31 edition. We would like to thank you for your recent coverage of our Blessings in a Backpack program in Deroche. We were able to raise more than $2,000 at our burger and beverage night. However, we are concerned that readers may have inferred that all families who received backpacks were having difficulty caring for their families. This is not necessarily the case. We do not discriminate, or question why a family might
choose to have a backpack. Just as we do not have any criteria for children who choose to eat breakfast at our breakfast club — some kids just like to eat breakfast with their friends. All are welcome! We wanted to clarify and expand the vision that we feel is Blessings in a Backpack. Our vision for this program was to give families a “lift” at the beginning of the weekend. Families may access this program for several reasons: medical, transportation, economic. Some children like to give their parents a break, and children feel proud they
can contribute a “pickme-up” gift to a family. On occasion, a child does not want to feel left out because their neighbours get a backpack. Feeling special, a sense of belonging, encouragement, care and compassion, and yes, helping address physical needs of some families are all part of the program. And all these things will improve learning and connection to schools and education. Many of these families give back to our school in multiple ways — volunteering, reading with children, and helping with fundraising activities for which we are

Tree policy revamped STORIES BY ADRIAN MACNAIR Mission Record
The tree replanting and retention policy has been overhauled to make it easier for developers to remove trees to make way for buildings and municipal infrastructure. The old policy was deemed “punitive and unfair for developers since it required a replanting deposit prior to zoning approval, according to a report to council Monday. Replanting will now be administered through the subdivision process, and the deposit has been axed. The new policy will not require developers to replant trees removed from sites designated
for municipal infrastructure, such as roads, sidewalks, etc. As well, no replanting is necessary in rural areas with proposed items such as the building, driveway, and septic field. Deputy planning director Barclay Pitkethly said revamping the policy maintains flexibility to working with developers, particularly in the planning process, as opposed to creating a bylaw with strict regulations. Coun. Jenny Stevens said the changes might
Council chambers to be equipped with cameras The district will soon be installing cameras within council chambers to offer a live web feed of meetings, plus to broadcast proceedings on a television mounted in the foyer. There will be a one-time $20,000 purchase and installation cost for the single ceiling-mounted pan, tilt
not retain enough incentive for developers to maintain trees. But Pitkethly said a $250 per tree policy discourages clear-cutting, and trees retained in a proposed building envelope will be credited at a 3:1 ratio. Currently, the district has $140,000 in tree replanting deposits, some of which will go to the parks, recreation and culture department if the funds are unclaimed or become forfeit. That money would go toward planting trees in public spaces.
of chambers, expected to take place between July 24 and Aug. 3, according to deputy chief administrative officer Paul Gipps. These works are aimed at improving visibility for both council and spectators, addressing functionality issues, and for rewiring the lighting.

Fire burned two homes on Friday Two Mission families are having to find temporary lodgings after a fire in the 7900-block of Burdock Street severely damaged two residences and vehicles Friday night. Firefighters were called around 11:30 p.m. and crews found the carport, roof and a pair of vehicles on fire at one house. The flames had spread to a neighbouring home, but firefighters were able to douse the fire quickly and contain it to the roof area, said Fire Chief Ian Fitzpatrick. Power lines had fallen across the two vehicles, which made accessing the fire at the first house problematic, he said. A mother and two children were living in the severely damaged home, while a husband, wife, their daughter and her two children lived in the other residence. The Emergency Social Services team took the families to a hotel under the Provincial Emergency Program for the first 72 hours, said Fitzpatrick. Results from the investigation were not available by The Record’s press deadline.

Mission girl lopping off locks Tuesday for cancer patient wigs Eight-year-old Madeline Hofer has been growing her hair for months, but June 26 she’ll cut it all off. Madeline is donating her locks to make wigs for cancer patients at the Mackie Naturals Salon in Mission.
She’s also hoping to raise $1,000 for Make-A-Wish Foundation through pledges and donations. Clearly, the plight of others has been on her mind. Madeline chose to donate to Make-A-Wish and to the wig pro-
gram because she knows a child in her school dealing with cancer. For those who would like to help Madeline achieve her goal, visit www. makeawishbc.ca, click on donate now and choose “Madeline Hofer Haircut
2012” to contribute to her campaign. Make-A-Wish Foundation of BC and Yukon has provided over 1,400 wishes for children with a life-threatening medical condition and their immediate family since 1983.

High water brings more bugs The localized high water levels are expected to produce mosquitoes in the upcoming weeks. When rising water moves into low-lying areas around river corridors it comes in contact with mosquito eggs that have been laid in previous seasons. This triggers the mosquito development cycle. The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) has been preparing since early April by monitoring and treating areas known to produce nuisance mosquitoes. All sites are being treated with a bacterial agent that is non-toxic to humans and is designed to specifically target a mosquito in its larval stage before it can fly. Crews have launched widespread hand and helicopter treatments of sites, covering more than 600 hectares of land around the Fraser River to date, and will continue throughout the upcoming months. Here are some ways to reduce mosquitoes around your property, and ways to limit bites: • Apply insect repellent containing DEET according to label instructions when outdoors. • Wear shoes, socks and long-sleeved, lightcoloured, loose-fitting shirts and pants when outdoors. • Avoid mosquito-laden areas at dawn and dusk. • Eliminate or regularly change water in saucers under flower pots, in bird baths, old tires, pet dishes, gutters, pool covers, trampolines, tarps and other areas where rainwater may collect. For updates on river levels and mosquito activity, residents are encouraged to follow the FVRD’s mosquito control contractor on Twitter @morrowmosquito or find them on Facebook: facebook.com/ morrowmosquito. For other questions, call the FVRD’s Mosquito Control Hotline at 1-888733-2333 or e-mail the FVRD at mosquitoes@ fvrd.bc.ca.

Building inspector earns award from the ASTTBC BY ADRIAN MACNAIR Mission Record
A local man has been awarded Top Technologist of the Year by the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia. Steve Banfield, a building inspector in Mission since 1989, was surprised to learn he was even nominated when he was invited to the awards in Burnaby May 25. Banfield has been contracted as a draftsman and building designer with
the federal government for over 20 years, and worked with BC Hydro as an underground service designer for 19. A graduate of BCIT, he became an instructor in the architecture and engineering technology department five years ago. “It was interesting because quite a few of my students are inspectors now and they were in the crowd,” he said about the awards. Banfield’s business, Focus Inspections, is located on the western end of First Avenue.

The 2012-2013 call for proposals for community-based projects under the New Horizons for Seniors Program is under way. Organizations can receive up to $25,000 in funding per year and must address one or more of the program’s five objectives: volunteering, mentoring, expanding awareness of elder abuse, social participation and capital assistance. Cancer ride rolls through Mission Saturday For eight years, about 100 ordinary people have set aside their hobbies and sacrificed their weekends to spend half a year training for one of the toughest one-day amateur cycling events in North America, the Ride2Survive. The event raises money for the Canadian Cancer Society, and so far this year the crew and riders have raised $345,000. Since its inception the ride has raised $1.9 million for cancer research. Training began in February with bike rides 80 kilometres long. Two weeks ago, the training rides hit the 200-kilometre mark. On June 23, another group of ordinary people will get on their bikes in Kelowna at 3:30 a.m. and arrive 19 hours later in North Delta. The ride will be passing through Mission around 7 p.m., and spectators are encouraged to gather at the Mission Visitor Information Centre on Lougheed Highway at that time. To follow the group’s progress by GPS tracking on ride day, read their stories from the road or make a donation, please go to www.ride2survive. ca.

Dave Alexander, who achieved local legend status for the highway collection of eclectic junk over which he was arrested during a protest against the municipality to remove it, has passed away He was 66. Police notified the family of his passing on June 6, after he was found in his trailer in Mission. He may have died June 5. The cause of his death is not yet known, according to family. Alexander lost his battle with the District of Maple Ridge to keep his collection, known as Dave’s World, in January 1998, when after ignoring an order to leave the property, he was carried away by four police officers early in the morning. A cleaning crew then removed all the debris that the district contended was encroaching on the highway and other land owned by the highways department. Alexander and his brother were both arrested during the skirmish and charged with obstructing a police officer, but were both acquitted in April 2000. He was a frequent visitor at the Ridge Meadows Recycling Depot and the general store in Ruskin, but in recent years had lived in Hatzic. He had only recently moved to the trailer park in Mission. Alexander leaves behind a daughter. • A Facebook page has been started in his memory.

A reminder about household hazardous waste The District of Mission held its third annual household hazardous waste dropoff event at the Mission Recycling Depot on May 12, the Saturday after spring cleanup week. The event gave residents the opportunity to drop off household products for which no practical, local disposal options exist and resulted in the collection of 3.9 tonnes of unwanted
chemical substances. A total of 179 residents made the trip to the depot specifically for this event. If you missed this year’s event, please note that certain household hazardous wastes are accepted at the depot throughout the year, including paint, paint aerosols, paint cans and domestic pesticides. In addition, the depot accepts household batteries, cell
phones, fluorescent light tubes and compacts, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms, televisions, stereos, computers, monitors, fax machines, printers, and supporting equipment, such as cables, keyboards and mice. Of course you can drop off your blue-bag recyclables anytime, which include clean paper, cardboard, container glass, metal food cans,

Mission RCMP run for special cause Damp and chilly weather did not dim the spirits of members of the Mission RCMP and Special Olympics athletes for this year’s B.C. Law Enforcement Torch Run June 7. Police officers and athletes from Mission completed the leg from the RCMP detachment at Lougheed Highway and Wren Street to the Tim Hortons on First Avenue, with people cheering and cars honking as the group ran. “We’ve had good turnouts in all of the communities we’ve been running in,” said Rick Lucy, deputy police chief in Abbotsford and torch run provincial chair. Two athletes from Mission participated in the run, both from the Special Olympics track
and field team; 48-yearold Pat Johnson, and 38-year-old JP Maher. Since 1990, the B.C. Law Enforcement Torch Run has been instrumental in raising awareness and funds for athletes and programs. “Special Olympics relies heavily on sponsorship and donations and it’s very volunteer intensive as well,” said Lucy, adding athletes train and hold events year-round. The Special Olympics provide individuals with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to enrich their lives and celebrate personal achievement through positive sport experiences. Jepsen wins three What’s Happening MMVA awards in Mission
a.m. to 3 p.m. All proceeds go to the Kidney Foundation of BC.
Mission’s Carly Rae Jepsen took home three awards for her current hit Call Me Maybe at Sunday’s MuchMusic Video Awards, held in Toronto. Jepsen earned accolades for video of the year, muchmusic.com’s most watched video, and the UR Fave video of the year. On Monday morning, the Heritage Park Secondary School graduate Tweeted, “Woke up feeling nostalgic! Sending love to David Fryer and Beverly Holmes for believing in me from the start! Xo.” The 26-year-old singer rocketed to fame after signing with fellow Canadian Justin Bieber’s record label earlier this year.

Fiddlin’ frenzy at the park The Envision Twilight Concert Series presents Fiddlin’ Frenzy at Fraser River Heritage Park on Friday, June 22 from 7 to 8 p.m. Fiddlin’ Frenzy is a pair of B.C. sibling phenoms who have taken the Western competitive fiddle scene by storm. Both Kai and Lia discovered fiddle music at a very young age. The fiddling and clogging duet has performed Celtic and traditional music at many events across North America. Then on Wednesday, June 27, the Groovedaddys bring their jazz funk to the Envision Twilight Concert Series at Fraser River Heritage Park. Groovedaddys is fairly new, but many of the members have played together for years in other bands. Chuck Cave (keyboards and alto sax) and Zaf Kundakcioglu (drums and percussion) wanted to form a band to play the music that soothes the soul and moves the feet. They found the perfect guitar player for the group in Jim Verwoerd and a short time later were very happy to add Johan Worst on bass. The Art in the Park program continues with a variety of visual artists presenting their work each evening of Twilight. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for a fun evening at the park. The Blackberry Kitchen and The
Log Cabin Café are open. Envision Twilight Concerts are a community,
free-by-donation series. For more information call 604-826-0277.
PLANT THE SEEDS OF GOODNESS
Most people have good hearts and would like to see the world transformed into one where love and compassion are the dominant motives, but unfortunately, the world isn’t so easily transformed. Hatred, violence and pugnacity are deeply seated in the human psyche, and the evildoing which flows from these sources is strongly resistant to change. So, how might we work to transform the world into a better place? There are many ways to make the world better. Gandhi suggested that “We must become the change we want to see in this world.” Jesus counseled us to “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” And, the law of karma claims that if we treat others well, our good deeds will return to us. Surely, there is some simple, yet profound wisdom in all of this. The quiet, unassuming example of a good person is often more effective at inducing change than the self-righteous moralist on their soapbox. Perhaps the attempt to transform the world into a better place is more like planting a seed than inducing a wholesale change of heart. And although we don’t know which of our kind words or actions will take root and grow in someone else’s heart, we should keep on planting those seeds and watering them with the hope that they will grow.

Mom closed her brilliant blue eyes on June 7, 2012 at 7:18 pm at the age of 79 years, surrounded by family and overflowing with love and respect for the woman that raised us and taught us what it means to be a great Mom. Sheila and Art were married December 24, 1950. They made Maple Ridge their home for most of their lives where they had their business and raised their family. They moved to Penticton 2 years ago to be close to the lake they loved so much that’s always been our “home away from home”. Mom was always a very classy, beautiful woman that never complained and was always there for all of us. When walking in the door of our home we would always say “Mom?” and she would always answer “in here.” Now when we call for Mom we know that she is now “up there” and will be forever in our hearts. We will miss you always Mommy…. A poem that Mom had...
When I must leave you. When I must leave you for a little while, please do not grieve and shed wild tears and hug your sorrows through the years. But start out bravely with a gallant smile and for my sake and in my name live on and do all things the same. Feed not your loneliness on an empty day, but fill each waking hour in useful ways. Reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer and I in turn will comfort you and hold you near, and never, never be afraid to die for I am waiting for you in the sky.
