Principal’s Message

Congratulations to Highland’s graduating class of 2012. On behalf of the all of the staff at the school we wish you a bright future and look forward to hearing of your accomplishments. The skills and attitudes that you have developed at school will hopefully be an important part of your future. We also realize that outside of school you have had many experiences, in a variety of settings, that have helped you become the person you are today. On this important occasion take some time to celebrate your accomplishments, pause to thank those that have helped you along the way, and then move towards your next goal in life. In many respects your education is just beginning. The ‘real world’ will provide many lessons in many different forms. Just keep in mind that anything of value will come from hard work and sacrifice. This year’s valedictorians spoke about their groups’ ability

to work together to accomplish great things. The ‘We are More’ philosophy has been demonstrated throughout this year as students responded to tragedy and worked to build a community that provided more support for youth. I cannot recall a time when I have seen as many young men and woman making contributions to the school and the community. I am often asked about the attitudes and actions of today’s youth and I respond with the many positive examples of projects and accomplishments from this year’s graduating class. This is a group that is committed to changing the world for the better.

ALEDICTORIANS Pragya Dawadi

Pragya Dawadi’s time at Highland Secondary School made her realize she wants to help people and try to change the world for the better. The female valedictorian for Highland was born in South Africa and moved here a couple of years ago. Before she moved here, she was interested mainly in academics, especially science and math, but once she got to Highland, that changed. “There’s a lot of focus on global things and a lot of connections and helping the world (at Highland),” said Dawadi. “I got really interested in that kind of stuff and got involved with the Interact Club and the Eco-Team and the GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance).” Dawadi received the President’s Scholarship — an entrance scholarship — to the University of Waterloo in

Ontario. She will start in the actuarial sciences program at the school in September, where she plans to use her skills in math and science to learn about statistics and risk management, coupled with human resources aspects. Right now Dawadi said she’s not sure which career path she will choose and the area of study “just sparks an interest.” Dawadi has played field hockey and piano since Grade 2, and she used to play classical pianist concerts. She also took guitar lessons for some time. She helped with Interact Club initiatives, volunteered at the Comox Recreation Centre, and worked as a candy striper at St. Joseph’s General Hospital.

Seth Johnson Highland Secondary School’s male valedictorian Seth Johnson is not sure what he wants to do for a career, likely because he’s interested in so many different areas. It’s “probably easier to ask me what my interests aren’t,” says the grad with a grin. “There’s so many things that I am interested in.” Johnson enjoys writing in a variety of styles. He writes creatively, including short stories and poetry, as well as essays, and he’s written for the school newspaper. He was also editor of the school yearbook. He’s interested in music, and plays piano, guitar and drums. And he likes to “goof around” in sports. Though he says he doesn’t play sports to a “high level,” he enjoys participating in team sports like soccer and basketball for fun. Because he’s unsure which career path he wants to

take, Johnson plans to take some time off school until he decides. “I’m going to stick around and probably work for a year and figure out where I’m going to get going,” says Johnson. I “don’t really have much of a plan at the moment, so I’m going to wait until I have one, work until I do, and take it from there.” Johnson says Highland’s graduation ceremony — which was held at the end of May — will be the most memorable experience of his time in secondary school.

Congratulations to the Graduating Class of 2012!

Principal’s Message

P. V A N I E R

It has been my privilege to serve as the principal to Vanier’s graduating class of 2012. This year’s experience of working with such a fine group of students has truly been a pleasure. The theme, A Red Carpet Affair, tells me the kids are excited about graduating and wish to end the year in a very classy, exciting and positive way. Vanier has an excellent reputation for its strong programs and long-standing traditions. Although our year has been taxed with job action, the staff, parents and volunteers have continued to work with our grads to maintain this reputation. Our year has experienced excellent achievements in the areas of academics in school and provincial exams; the performing arts once again offered a fabulous musical; many athletic teams placed well in their divisions and many did well provincially; technology continues to grow and our students won medals in the trades during the Skills Canada competitions; examples of quality student leadership has been witnessed throughout the year through the various clubs and class projects. This year’s grad theme song, “Let it be a good life,” is an

excellent way to end their year at Vanier and to prepare themselves for their future. The time has come that our grads move on to bigger and better experiences and a ‘good life.’ The staff of Vanier believes in each and every one of our grads and feels they are well prepared to be successful in the tasks and journeys that lie ahead in their future. On behalf of the school administration, teaching staff and support staff of G.P. Vanier, I’d like to congratulate all the students of this graduating class. I trust the staff of Vanier have prepared you well for the many adventures in life you are about to take on. Good Luck!

ALEDICTORIANS Andraya Walters

Andraya Walters plans to head off to university to take nursing — but first she needs to address the travelling bug. This year’s female valedictorian for G.P. Vanier Secondary School will stay in town and work to save money for a backpacking trip to Europe next spring. England, France, Spain, Croatia, Austria, Germany and Finland are some of the stops she and her best friend plan to make on their three-month trip to Europe in April 2013. Walters wants to attend the University of Victoria or the University of British Columbia the following fall to become a registered nurse. Then she’d like to do some more travelling. “Hopefully then I can go overseas and help (using nursing skills), then come back and specialize,” says Walters. “That’s my plan.” Walters’ time at Vanier has been busy. She was

on the girls’ rugby team, which placed second in the provincials this year, and she was active in other sports such as soccer. She was instrumental in the creation of the documentary Conquering Silence, which is a companion piece to the school’s video Instructions for a Bad Day. Walters also does spoken word, and used to participate in theatre, including improv and musicals. This year, Walters became one of the first students in the peer counselling club, which was started by teachers but is designed to enable students help students. “If there’s students that don’t want to talk to an adult, they can talk to a peer, so we’ve been taught about a lot of different issues like eating disorders and depression and stuff — we’ve been taught how to deal and help people who have those kind of issues,” explains Walters. It’s a really rewarding program.”

Brook Trainor Brook Trainor loves hockey. Trainor, who is G.P. Vanier Secondary School’s male valedictorian this year, plays centre for the Comox Valley Glacier Kings, and plans to continue playing hockey after secondary school. “It was always my goal to try to get a scholarship with it and go from there — maybe pro (professional),” says Trainor, adding he’s played hockey for the majority of his life. He has already applied to various Junior A hockey teams on Vancouver Island and in other provinces. And where he goes to school will ultimately come down to where he can play hockey. But even with his focus on hockey, Trainor didn’t lose focus on his grades. He is a straight A student. “My whole life it’s kind of been like if I want to play

high level sports, which is sort of all I ever wanted to do, my parents, I have to keep straight As, so that’s kind of the deal,” explains Trainor, adding he didn’t always like this rule. But, “now I see it’s definitely worth it because I see there’s options.” He plans to go into the area of business, and possibly become a financial advisor — that is, if he doesn’t end up playing hockey as a career. Though hockey is his No. 1 sports love, Trainor also skis and plays volleyball.

Management & Staff wish the Comox Valley Graduating Classes of 2012 A BRIGHT & PROSPEROUS FUTURE.

Principal’s Message

On behalf of the teaching and support staff of Mark R. Isfeld Secondary, I would like to congratulate the grad class of 2012. The Commencement Ceremony is designed to acknowledge an important milestone in the lives of our graduates. This ceremony allows friends and family to celebrate this special time with these students. While each grad class inevitably establishes its own identity and culture, this particular group of students has set itself apart from others in so many ways. This special group of students has performed well academically, in the fine arts and performing arts, as well as in the areas of technology and athletics. The many examples of both individual and group accomplishments demonstrate the strengths of a diverse and high-performing group. Where this group has set itself apart is in the realm of citizenship. This may the finest collection of ‘citizens’ that I have been a part of in my career. While this may be a generalization, I can’t name another group that compares to this group in terms of looking beyond themselves. The culture of caring that has developed in this group and

the high degree of involvement has made it a pleasure for us all to be part of. They care about each other, have provided both subtle and very overt positive leadership to our younger students and have embraced opportunities to help in their community. The future for these students is so full of promise. I encourage them to follow their heart and pursue their own dreams. I love the quote “Life isn’t about finding yourself — life is about creating yourself.” This very capable group has the tools to explore their interests and the skills to act on things they are passionate about. The Comox Valley has every reason to be very proud of this group of students. Congratulations and we wish you the very best!

Alexandra Kent loves drama — and law. Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School’s female valedictorian plans to move to Victoria at the beginning of July where she will work for the summer before she starts a theatre program at the University of Victoria in September. Acting is one of Kent’s passions, and she has been involved in various projects, including Isfeld’s production of the Diary of Anne Frank, and the school’s improv team. “I like drama because it’s a chance to be someone who’s not myself,” says Kent, adding she’s not quiet but she’s not very outgoing naturally. “It’s the shot to just go out there and be as confident as I can be when I’m not generally.” She will be working towards a four-year degree from UVIC, and she notes the school’s theatre program is very competitive with

only 14 students making it into the second year, nine into the third and six into the final year. However, Kent also hopes to become a lawyer, and eventually, a judge. She enjoys law and plans to use her degree in theatre to enter law school. But Kent chose law for a larger reason than the fact she’s interested in it; she wants to create change in the world and sees a career in law as a avenue to do just that. Kent also participated in Isfeld’s poetry slam at and the Comox Valley School District’s Public Speaking Contest, where she placed first in English this year. Kent’s fondest secondary school memory is this year’s Tailgate BBQ.

Ryan Hunt Mark R. Isfeld’s male valedictorian plans to stick around home for a year before he heads off to Calgary to obtain a bachelor degree in business administration. Ryan Hunt wants to attend Mount Royal University in September 2013 because of its reputation for quality programs in his area of interest, which is business with a focus on marketing. “I am fascinated by the way products are displayed, the way they work, you know, the way businesses work, companies, professionalism, everything,” explains Hunt. He hopes to get his masters degree in business administration one day as well. Hunt describes himself as an avid volunteer in the community. He volunteered as a referee at the Special Olympics, among various other instances when he’s lent a helping hand around town. The young graduate also plays music; he’s been playing guitar for about eight years and drums for about five, and he’s tried his hand at playing piano.

Hunt’s musical styles and influences range greatly, and he struggles to pin down specific genres to list as favourites. “I’ll play everything from classical to metal to folk to funk to jazz — I play whatever I’m feeling at the time,” he explains. “Music is like life basically.” Hunt is delighted to be Isfeld’s male valedictorian — but not for himself. “I didn’t want to be valedictorian for me. I wanted to be valedictorian because I love this grad class and I wanted to represent it for the way I look at it,” he explains. “This grad class has potential beyond belief.”

Taylor Christianson When I came to CVCS in Grade 8, I enjoyed how close everyone was, everyone knew each other and enjoyed hanging out and having fun. I plan to spend this summer working at a ďŹ shing lodge, then head off to Hawaii in the fall for a program called Mission Builders.

Mikayla Donovan I have attended CVCS since Kindergarten, and I feel so blessed to have many different memories from my time here. In July, I am moving to Langley for an Internship at Christian Life Assembly, then I will pursue a career in Medicine.

Mandy Larade

• Excellent academic foundations • Balanced class sizes • Excellent programs including technology, music, athletics, ďŹ ne arts, performing arts, photography and more • CertiďŹ ed, dedicated and caring faculty • Multi-denominational faith-based school community • Tax deductible tuition • Opportunities for parent involvement

I‘ve been at CVCS since Kindergarten, and have countless incredible memories. After graduation, I will pursue photojournalism at a college in Ontario.

Kendra Naswell I came to CVCS for my Grade 11 and 12 years. It has been some of my best years at school; each day is ďŹ lled with fun, laughter and learning. After graduation, I plan to work in the Valley and do some post-secondary schooling on-line.
