Elizabeth Taylor (right), with her daughter Garette Osborne, 9, and neighbour Danielle Fotheringhame, stand at the entrance to a trap that was recently set near their houses to catch a bear that has been eating garbage in the area.
Bylaw needed for garbage at a garbage can, then splitting, fast. The black bear, or maybe it’s a few that look like each other, has been in the area of 100B Avenue and 243A Street for a dozen years, says Albion resident Elizabeth Taylor. It’s a nice enough bear, she says. It just seems to mind his own business and does what bears do – constantly scavenge and eat. But Taylor, a former candidate for Maple Ridge council, is getting tired of being the unofficial game warden, or janitor for the area.
Leaving cans outside only endangers bears: resident by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter He’s been poking around the back yards of Albion homes for few years now, ambling along green spaces between houses, helping himself to snacks of leftovers that residents temptingly leave at curbside, and at least once, nipping into a garage to get

But we don’t want the bear harmed.” Last week, conservation officers left a bear trap in her yard after a panicked neighbour made a phone call. Taylor, though, says Maple Ridge should have a bylaw requiring residents to keep their garbage inside until the morning

What people enjoy about Country Fest, the agricultural fair that’s been going on more than a century in Maple Ridge, is the soft green grass beneath their feet and the tall, leafy trees over head. Those pastoral surroundings, the site of Spencer dairy farm, whose milk house still stands, takes people back to a time they never knew each July, when the farm festival takes place. That soon could disappear under slabs of parking lot pavement and big box concrete, if Maple Ridge Bates council approves a land swap with mall development company Smart Centres. The old 1960s barns and sheds that have grown up around Albion fairgrounds, home not only to Country Fest, but to the Christmas Hamper Society and Ghost Ridge, as well as cadets and minor baseball, all could be bulldozed. In return for acquiring the lush, historic site, Smart Centres would give the District of Maple Ridge its rougher 20 acres on the west side of 105th Avenue, which the Agricultural Land Commission says it won’t allow to be developed. As a result, the fairgrounds and the fair would have to move, while Smart Centres would join the fairgrounds to its existing property for a total of 27 acres of new shopping. “They’ll never be able to move the milk house,” said association manager Lorraine Bates. Expert finds cats not killed by human ‘Most bodies had three or more marks of predation’ by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter
A
back room at the Dewdney Animal Hospital in Maple Ridge turned into a forensic laboratory last Wednesday, crammed with 10 people clad in protective ‘bunny’ suits. Lead by Dr. Melinda Merck, they carefully examined the remains of 30 animals – 20 cats, eight crows, one rabbit, one dog – found in Maple Ridge and Langley since May. Six hours later, the team, which included Maple Ridge veterinarian Adrian Walton, figured out who had killed them, ending a year-long hunt for a possible sociopath. “From the very first body we noticed signs of predators,” said Dr. Merck, who still made the team meticulously study every other remain. “On most of the bodies we had three or more signs of predation.” A renowned animal crime scene specialist from Atlanta, Merck investigated the Whistler sled dog killings and helped build a case against NFL player Michael Vick for his involvement in a dog-fighting ring. Her expertise was crucial to cracking a case that had puzzled police and the SPCA for almost a year. When the first reports of mutilated cats were filed with Ridge Meadows RCMP in June 2011, the SPCA was quick to blame coyotes. But after more cat carcasses turned up in strange places last September and a pathology report indicated cuts with a knife or sharp object, police and the SPCA issued a warning. The reports stopped for several months, but surfaced again in the new year. In Maple Ridge, a cat’s head was

A tail was found under a missing cat poster, while another was tacked to a fence. In May, after the remains of nine cats were found in Maple Ridge in a span of two weeks and four discovered across the river in Langley, the SPCA called in Dr. Merck. “It takes a meticulous re-examination – basically getting the body back to where it was at the time of death,” said Merck. As she looked at the legs and torso of cats, Merck saw tell-tale signs of predation. When she rolled back the skin, there were V-shaped marks on bones and tissue from the animals’ teeth. She found foreign fur caught in the claw of cats and scuff marks
left on paws from being dragged. Some had head trauma from being shaken, others had hair clumped together with saliva from a predator’s mouth. Oddly, some of the remains had no puncture marks on the skin. “A lot of vets don’t even know that,” said Merck. “You can have these beautiful puncture marks on the muscle and tissue and the skin is completely intact.” Merck also studied the crime scenes, looking at photographs of where the remains were discovered. Many locations were spotless and had no traces of a vicious death in the jaws of a coyote with no blood or entrails left behind. The scene can look fairly clean,
says Merck, explaining that it’s typical not to have a lot of blood in an attack because the predator’s teeth are clamped down and coyotes often carry their kills elsewhere to feed. “Cats and dogs don’t bleed like we do,” she added. Blood can also dissipate quickly when it rains. “There is no doubt that these were all killed by a predator,” said Merck, who has now trained local animal cruelty investigators to spot the signs of stealthy animal attacks. The SPCA is currently working with DNA experts at Simon Fraser University to confirm if the predators involved in the attacks were coyotes or some other animal. The B.C. SPCA, however, isn’t the first agency to incriminate humans
for what is normal, but seemingly odd animal behaviour. “There are tons of cases where this has happened,” said Merck, who knows how easy it is for an untrained eye to confuse the two. In 2006, Merck cracked a similar case of cat mutilations in Spokane, Washington. In Denver, Colorado, the dismemberment was pinned on foxes. “They brought experts from all over the country and found out it was a den of foxes,” said Merck. “It turns out foxes will decapitate a cat’s head and bring it back to their den for their kids to play with. It can be bizarre and it can look very bizarre.” Online, however, people are still casting doubt on Merck’s conclusion that the cats were killed by a predator. When asked why it would caused such alarm, the SPCA stressed it had to err on the side of caution. Marcie Moriarty, general manager of cruelty investigations for the SPCA, said investigators could not initially rule out the possibility of human involvement because veterinary and pathology reports from 2011 and 2012 indicated that the animals had been severed using a sharp instrument. The odd placement of the remains was also grounds for concern. “We have a responsibility in any of these types of cases where there is a suspicion of humans causing violence to animals,” she said. “I much rather be speaking to the news about how this was a predator rather than a year from now stating that we chalked this off to a predator, but now we’ve found out the person responsible has moved onto humans.” The SPCA is still urging pet owners to keep their cats indoors. “Bad things don’t happen to cats that are indoors,” said Merck, who specialized in felines when she worked as a vet. “If you can make them happy and fulfill all their needs as a species, nothing happens to them. They don’t get hit by cars, they don’t get taunted or shot at, they don’t get human attacks, they don’t get animal attacks.”
‘At some point we may do a bylaw and ticket people’ Bears from front Even an open garbage can in a neighbourhood park adds to the problem. Taylor doesn’t want the bear to be shot because it’s become used to free meals and lost its fear of people. Last fall, a neighbour left his garage door open and the bear nipped in and dragged out three bags of garbage. Taylor jumped into her car and drove into the driveway, horn blaring, to scare away the bear. “The bear’s done no harm to anybody. But there’s a lot of people freaked out.”
Last summer, near where the trap is located, a nine-year-old girl was picking black berries, encountered the bear, screamed and ran. “The poor bear. The bear looked as traumatized as she was,” Taylor added. She wants the district to pick up the garbage every other week. People also are putting their recyclables into the garbage bags, which then get tossed into the garbage stream. “We’re not environmentally friendly in Maple Ridge and we need to stop lying about it.” So far, the bear is wise to the big blue trap and on the weekend didn’t
fall temptation to the carton of molasses and a bit of fish that was sitting inside as bait. But that wouldn’t be as enticing as garbage from dozens of homes, she points out. Maple Ridge announced earlier this year it was starting a Bear Aware program, but it relies on education only, with no requirements for bear-proof containers or when garbage may be put at curbside. According to the District of Maple Ridge, last year the Conservation Officer Service killed 16 bears in Maple Ridge that had become habituated to human contact.
If human-associated food is readily available, bears will quickly learn to forage in suburbs, threatening the safety of residents and bears, said a news release from earlier this month. Rosie Wijenberg was recently named as the Bear Aware community coordinator. Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said Maple Ridge unveiled its Bear Aware program earlier this year, taking a low-key approach. “We started with education. We started with awareness.” One approach is to use door hangars to let people know it’s not a

good idea to leave their garbage out overnight and making them aware that they can get a bear-proof container. The next step could be putting stickers on garbage cans, telling people to not to put out their garbage at curbside until the morning of pickup. “It’s a progression. At some point we may do a bylaw and ticket people.” Most people want to do the right thing, he added. As well, the district is gradually putting bear-proof garbage containers in its parks.

Teachers extra curricular ban allowed to continue But will have to meet with parents by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter The B.C. Labour Relations Board ruled Friday that the provincial teachers’ union could continue its ban on extracurricular volunteering. However, teachers will be required to take part in parent-teacher conferences and other job-related meetings. In her decision, LRB vice-chair Ritu Mahil
stated the B.C. Teachers’ Federation’s move to ban teachers from volunteering their time for extracurricular activities doesn’t constitute an illegal strike. Mahil stated that since such activities are voluntary, and not related to coursework, the union is free to direct its members to withdraw their participation. The B.C. teachers’ voted 73 per cent in favour of the ban in April after being legislated back to work by the provincial government. However, Mahil also
ruled that the extracurricular ban doesn’t extend to activities related to work duties that occur outside of school hours, such as district committee meetings and parent-teacher conferences, and that the union’s direction to teachers to not take part in these activities constitutes an unlawful strike. Both sides in the dispute were quick to claim victory. “This is a significant legal victory for teachers because it clarifies the distinction between
voluntary and non-voluntary work, and it reaffirms that the countless hours that teachers devote to extra-curricular activities with students truly are voluntary,” said BCTF President Susan Lambert. “We are pleased that the LRB has found in favour of the BCPSEA application and declared that the BCTF engaged in an illegal strike by directing its members to withdraw from those activities that are part of a teacher’s normal work,” BCPSEA in a press release Friday afternoon.
While both sides are claiming victory, the ruling won’t bring about a quicker resolution to the ongoing contract dispute, says Maple Ridge Teachers’ Association president George Serra. “We win, but what do we really win?” he said. With the June 30 deadline for a new contract looming, “We’ve heard [education minister] George Abbott say he will legislate over the summer if no agreement is reached, so that will likely mean more contract stripping.”

Funding changes mean fewer dollars for adult ed. by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter Recent funding changes by the provincial Ministry of Education will mean fewer dollars for adult education, according to the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District. Under the province’s 2008 Education Guarantee, school districts across the province offer a variety of tuition-free
courses for graduated adults looking to upgrade their high school marks so they can be eligible for university or trades programs Currently, should an adult student complete just 10 per cent of an online course, the school district administering the course will receive full funding from the government to offset its costs. However, after funding changes made last
month, only 75 per cent of funding will be released to school districts upon valid enrollment of an online courses, with the remainder released upon completion. As of 2013, payment drops to 50 per cent upon enrollment, and 50 per cent upon completion, not only for online courses, but classroom courses, as well. “We know we’ll be getting less funding, it’s just a matter of how much,”
said Bruce Grady, the district’s principal for continuing education. The purpose of the changes is to ensure tax dollars provided by the ministry will be accountable to taxpayers, and provide an incentive to school districts to better support course completion, according to a spokesperson from the Ministry of Education. School District No. 42 received $554,000 from

Debate about death A law banning assisted suicide was struck down in B.C. Supreme Court last week, igniting the debate whether the ruling will open the door to legalized euthanasia. The court ruled that Canada’s ban on physicianassisted deaths is unconstitutional and gave Parliament a year to draft new legislation. The law had been challenged by Gloria Taylor, who suffers from Lou Gehrig’s disease. At 64, she can no longer walk, eats through a feeding tube, and is losing her ability to speak. She was granted a constitutional exemption that permits her to seek physician-assisted death while the ruling is suspended. She hasn’t yet decided what she’ll do, or when. She has limited use of her hands now, but says the biggest loss is that of her dignity. She can cope with death, but not suffering. The federal government is expected to challenge the ruling, and is under pressure to do so from opponents of physician-assisted death. They believe that striking down the Criminal Code provision prohibiting assisted suicide is a dangerous step backwards – a conflict between the value and respect for human life and an individuals’ rights to autonomy and self-determination, to choice. Would someone choose to end their life because they don’t want to be a burden to others, or because they don’t want to be alone, or because staying alive is too expensive? Could they be coerced into believing the latter? That is where this debate is going. But let’s be clear, only those who are seriously and incurably ill should have the right to request that a physician assist them to end their lives in a dignified manner. And that is for the doctors to decide. That’s how it has been done in Switzerland since 1942. We we able, through health care now, to make dying comfortable, managing pain and maintaining respect, to a point. But when despair reaches a level that a person wishes to die, and one is willing to risk certain freedoms to help end that suffering, is it time to think again about just who a ban on physician-assisted deaths was helping. – The News Tell us what you think @ www.mapleridgenews.com

Choosing work instead of welfare VICTORIA – The B.C. government has taken some modest steps to tighten up the province’s income assistance system, and to encourage people to work when they are able to. With Premier Christy Clark swooping in to take credit, B.C. Views Social Development Tom Fletcher Minister Stephanie Cadieux unveiled changes that included fixing the worst mistake in B.C. Liberal policy. Cadieux acknowledged that B.C. was the only province that clawed back all earnings from employable welfare recipients, and she announced that from now on they will be able to earn up to $200 a month without penalty. The exemption for disabled people is increased from $500 to $800 a month. Another important change is requiring welfare recipients to file income tax returns. People can now do temporary work when it comes along, report the income and take advantage of the various tax credits that come from participating in society instead of just living off it. Any experience earning money is valuable experience. With baby boomers starting to retire in big numbers, the expected labour shortage has begun across Western Canada. And yet, increasing numbers of foreign workers are coming in to do farm and other work, while many young people are unemployed. Finance Minister Kevin Falcon took
note of this during his budget preparations. Increasing numbers of young, employable people were applying for welfare in southern B.C., while jobs go begging in the booming northeast. Falcon mused about setting up a program to provide training and plane fare for these people, an idea quickly dubbed “welfare air.” Another effort to get young people working is Jobfest, a rock-themed road show currently touring northern B.C. towns. It attracts young people with music and souvenirs like drumsticks and guitar picks, and offers them skills assessment using sexy iPad apps and graphics that depict carpentry as cool. If Jobfest and welfare air sound a bit desperate, it’s because they are. They illustrate our society’s problem. We have a public school system where students pass whether they do the work or not. The culture assumes self-esteem is more important than achievement. The teachers’ union constantly sets an example that the way to get what you want is to stamp your feet and demand it from government. What do we expect young people to learn? And how easy is it for B.C. to slip into a Greece-like tailspin, where a majority expects to be carried on the backs of the shrinking minority who do productive work? Old-timers might recall when Mike Harcourt’s NDP government took over from the allegedly miserly Social Credit regime and raised welfare rates. They compounded that mistake by relaxing eligibility rules and making it easier for employable people to stay on welfare. After a couple of years of this wealth redistribution, 10 per cent of the
B.C. population was on welfare, with more piling on every day. Faced with the results of this staggering blunder, Harcourt lashed out at “cheats, deadbeats and varmints” scamming B.C. taxpayers and launched a crackdown on fraud. Later the NDP cut the basic rate for single employables to $500 a month. Today it stands at $610, and the NDP looks poised to repeat history. Surrey MLA Jagrup Brar did a month-long publicity stunt in January, living on welfare by wandering from shelter to food bank with TV cameras trailing behind.
Harcourt lashed out at “cheats, deadbeats and varmints” scamming B.C. taxpayers and launched a crackdown on fraud.
Brar would have been better off if welfare air had been available. Instead of learning to live off the burgeoning urban handout industry, he could have gone up to Dawson Creek or Fort St. John and worked as a labourer. THE NEWS/letters Dave was ‘clown prince of Maple Ridge’ EDITOR, THE NEWS:
Re: Dave’s World comes to an end (The News, June 13). I, along with many Maple Ridge residents, are much saddened by the news of Dave Alexander’s passing. To us, Dave was the clown prince of Maple Ridge. His desire to just ‘do his own thing’ was like a ray of light shining in the turgid greyness emanating from the mental midgets inhabiting municipal hall. I only had the pleasure of meeting Dave on two occasions, once when we met on the Victoria ferry, Dave being on his way to plead with his MLA to get council of his back (futile), and again at his “emporium” on Lougheed Highway. On the second occasion I was driving with my sister and her family, visiting from UK, when my sibling insisted on stopping to peruse this roadside attraction. On returning to our transport, we discovered that dear sister had persuaded Dave to, reluctantly, hand over, in return for the princely sum of $6, a rather tired and scruffy plaster casting of an eagle. Sister was less than amused by her husband and brother’s reaction, which consisted of hoots of derisive laughter and numerous negative comments regarding the quality of her purchase. I am reminded of Dave to this day every time I visit my sister’s home in a 300-year-old stone cottage nestled in a Cumbrian fell. There, amongst the tasteful antiques and family heirlooms, sits this tacky plaster bird looking like a refugee from a 1950s Vancouver boarding house. Dave’s big mistake, of course, was to challenge authority at a time when Maple Ridge was ruled by a right-wing council. At the same time, he was getting enough votes, when running for mayor, to create a feeling of unease amongst the ruling class. The method of Dave’s removal made Maple Ridge the laughing stock of Canada. Dave will be missed, for different reasons by different people, but missed nevertheless.

Where others’ noses begin EDITOR, THE NEWS:
Here’s a question for council: cigarette smoke is a proven toxin that has a horrific toll in terms of damaging human health and destroying life. It is rightly banned in public places and even in outdoor areas like parks (Edmonton has a park ban that extends to 10 meters). Orange County is now leading the way in enlarging its bans to include residential patios and balconies. In doing this, people are simply recognizing the basic human right to protection from harm by proven deadly toxins. Here in Maple Ridge, how do we protect ourselves in our own homes when neighbors sit outside a few feet away and multiple times daily blow this toxin into our homes? How do we protect our children and the special needs people who live with us? The neighbors are probably trying to keep their own home from the stink of smoke, but then subject others to this stink and deadly toxin. cannot just pack up and leave to get away from nearby smokers? It appears there is some hope for protection from the B.C. Human Rights Commission, which has recently awarded two judgments against smoking neighbors. Hopefully, this is the beginning of widening the ban as in Orange County. People have the freedom and right to smoke. But in our societies, we all recognize that none of us has the right to harm others. As a pediatrician said recently in response to the question why we ban smoking even in outdoor areas like parks: “Because we cannot harm others.” That sets clear limits on the freedom of people to cause others harm. As someone said about personal freedoms, the right to swing our arms ends where others’ noses begin. Enough evidence and health experts have concluded that “all exposure to tobacco smoke is harmful,” “tobacco smoke is toxic waste,” and “there is no known safe level of exposure for these substances.” The EPA classes second hand smoke in the same category for the most deadly cancer-causing sub-
stances such as arsenic, asbestos, benzene and vinyl chloride. The World Health Organization says that the death toll from this toxin is now almost six million people a year. The same web site notes this destruction amounts to 15,000 people killed every day. That’s more than a third of all smokers and more than half of all long-term smokers. It has killed 40 million in the last decade.
The World Health Organization says that the death toll from this toxin is now almost six million people a year. And it wrecks the health of many more people. My question to council: you ban such things as lawn chemicals to protect people and animals, why not protect human life in our community against one of the most dangerous toxins that we know of? RCMP warn – don’t drink and drive Ridge Meadows RCMP nabbed their first driver as soon as new impaired driving legislation came into force on Friday. B.C.’s tough drunk driving penalties have been amended to ensure all drivers that blow above the warning level will be given a second breathalyzer test. At 8 p.m. on June 15, the traffic services unit was conducting a road check on Abernethy Way at 224th Street in Maple Ridge. A 2011 Dodge pickup truck was stopped, and the driver showed signs of being impaired by alcohol. He complied with a breath demand, and the result on the approved
screening device was a ‘fail.’ Police said the man declined an opportunity to provide a breath sample into a second instrument as per the new Immediate Roadside Penalty legislation. As a result, the 47-year-old Pitt Meadows man had his driver’s licence taken away, and he cannot drive for the next 90 days. His pickup truck was impounded for 30 days. “With the return of the IRP program, we’re hoping all drivers get the message – don’t drink and drive,” said Sgt. Dale Somerville. “In this case, the man will have to find alternate transportation for the next three months. Fines, towing, and vehicle impound fees are around the $4,000 mark.
This program is aimed at reducing the number of impaired drivers on our roads, as impaired driving is a leading cause of crashes. Ridge Meadows RCMP will continue to check for drinking drivers and make our roads among the safest in the world.”
Cars recovered Coquitlam RCMP worked with the province to remove 15 abandoned cars from north end of Pitt Lake recently. The vehicles had become hazardous to the environment as they were badly decomposing and leaking toxic
‘If they do it right, I don’t have a problem’ Fair from front The building has a lot of concrete in it and would be difficult to transport. And what about the commemorative trees that line the pathways? About 35 have been planted throughout the old farm to honour local leaders, including former RCMP officer Randy Herman and former
mayor Belle Morse and more than 30 other givers who’ve made their mark on Maple Ridge. A tree nearby the Country Fest stage is called the Merrymaker tree, points out Agricultural Association president Tom Cameron. The tree is named after Morse, who, each fair, used to perform in a group of the same name.
The grounds also boast neatly trimmed grassed and fenced areas for displaying cattle, sheep, llama, beef and dairy cows and dogs. “Everything with four legs gets shown outside,” explains Bates. Extra parking is now also needed for the fair, now that fields on the west side of 105th can no longer be used for

fluids. The vehicles, which were not claimed by their owners, were loaded onto a barge and sent for recycling. “The Coquitlam RCMP rural section is not only committed to ensuring the safety and security of local citizens both on land and in the water, but also to the natural environment in which they work in,” said Cnst. Chris Nordlund “Our goal is to ensure that the area stays as clean and sustainable as it is today so that future generations can enjoy all of the uniqueness and extraordinary wealth of mother nature at its finest.”

parking? The grounds also provide space for flyball competition and give 4H competitors a cheap place to camp when they’re at the fair to show their animals. If it all had to be moved, and animals put indoors in a big, brand new building in the new location, could the fair survive? The two behind the fair think so. “If they do it right, I don’t have a problem with it,” says Cameron. “If Ernie [Daykin, Maple Ridge mayor]) drives a hard bargain.” Cameron says he wants to maintain the country look and points out the Chilliwack Fair and Agrifair in Abbotsford both take place on tarmac. Country Fest’s fair grounds are far from being in disrepair. Buildings remain presentable, fences are still sturdy. The district recently upgraded the water supply, Bates noted. To complete the scene, which looks like something out of Farmville, Spencer Creek, which gently flows through the grounds, has a new lease on life thanks to an improved pump station, where Spencer flows into Kanaka Creek. Bates said the society’s directors discussed Country Fest recently and no one was strongly opposed to relocating. And she pointed out previously that attendance jumped when the Chilliwack Fair moved. Maple Ridge council last week authorized staff to start negotiating with Smart Centres.

A con artist pretending to represent Ridge Meadows Hospital has been canvassing Maple Ridge neighbourhoods in an attempt to scam well-meaning residents into handing over cash donations. The Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation received a call from a concerned donor after a young woman with a hospital ID badge showed up at their door on Tuesday, asking for donations near
123rd Avenue and 233rd Street. The husband declined, saying they already support the hospital, while his wife called the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation to see if the canvasser was legitimate. “We don’t go door to door for donations,” said Sandra Rankin, executive director of the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation. “This person had nothing to do with the hospital or the foundation.” She’s concerned donors may have been bilked out of their
money by the scam artist. “For every call we get, there’s probably 10 more we haven’t gotten,” said Rankin. An RCMP spokesperson advised that most legitimate charities have other means of allowing you to donate, and if you don’t feel comfortable, don’t hand over any cash. “Anytime you’re not 100 per cent sure, ask them for an information pamphlet with a phone number you can call to donate, or donate online,” the spokesperson said.
Rankin advised anyone who has been approached by someone canvassing for donations for the hospital in recent weeks to call the police and report the incident. “We sympathize with people who have given money to this person,” said Rankin. “We don’t want people misrepresenting us.”

THE NEWS Serving Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows since 1978
For breaking news, go to
If Maple Ridge council agrees, residents frustrated by parking problems from outsiders soon will be able to get the interlopers out of their neighbourhoods. That could mean West Coast Express commuters will have to have find another place to park their cars when catching the train into Vancouver. If council OKs the
policy at its June 26 meeting, residents will be able to collect signatures requesting either a resident-only or a resident-exemption policy in their neighbourhoods. However, 65 per cent of the residents in that area would have make such a request. Under the resident-only policy, only vehicles belonging to local residents will be allowed to park on streets in that area.
Under the residentexemption policy, nonresidents would have time limits of one or two hours, while residents with a permit could park longer. Fees for parking decals are proposed to be $10. The policies could be applied to areas near the Port Haney West Coast Express station, the Maple Meadows Way station or near Ridge Meadows Hospital. Parking on streets
around the Maple Meadows Way station has “created some challenges,” Mayor Ernie Daykin said later. And people who park near the Port Haney station may instead have to be dropped off if local neighbours request parking restrictions. If approved, the policies only would apply in single-family or semidetached areas, Mayor Ernie Daykin pointed out later.

Braun McAsh has been a professional fight choreographer for 35 years and has trained with some of the most experienced weapon masters in the world.
All hail the mighty sword Maple Ridge resident Braun McAsh has studied the art of the sword by M o n i s h a M a r t i n s staff reporter
A
s he held a sword above his head during a lecture at Science World, Braun McAsh had an epiphany.
“Kingdoms and empires have risen and fallen on a sword,” he told the audience, seemingly in awe of the weapon he held tightly in his hands. “It’s about understanding the history of what led us to now.” A professional fight choreographer since 1976, McAsh has more than 120 professional credits in film, television, and in stage productions – including for the Stratford Shakespeare Festival and the Canadian Opera
Company. But he is best known as the swordmaster for the TV series Highlander and the Highlander movie Endgame. McAsh’s fascination with rapiers, foils, sabres and scimitars, however, is not merely theatrical. Originally trained in theatrical combat techniques at the School of Dramatic Art (University of Windsor) and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, (London, England) he has also trained as the personal student of
some of the most experienced fight choreographers and weapons masters in the world. While an actor at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, he trained for more than four years as the personal student of the legendary Paddy Crean, Stratford’s resident fight director. He also studied with William Hobbs, one of the finest film choreographers. His original master was the Hungarian Olympic fencing coach Maestro Istvan Danosi. See Sword, p22
Artist behind Paint hosts talk at art gallery
Contributed
‘Origins Coalition’ by Lyle Wilson.
If you missed the first opportunity to hear Lyle Wilson talk about his paintings at the Maple Ridge Art Gallery, you’ll get a second chance next week. Paint, an exhibition of more than 40 of Wilson’s paintings, has been well-received since it opened in May. “The opportunity to curate an exhibition by a leading First Nations artist and oversee his first catalogue has been a great privilege,” says gallery curator Barb Duncan. Born in 1955, Wilson was raised in the Haisla community of Kitamaat and went on to study fine arts and education at both the University of British Columbia and the Emily Carr College of Art and Design. He also undertook an intensive exploration of what he refers to as “the classic Northwest Coast style” while working as a commissioned artist at the Museum of Anthropology
at UBC. The artist’s 20-year association with museum enabled him to study the work of past masters and develop his own understanding and interpretation of the style of painting popularly known as formline. Paint is the first major exhibition to focus exclusively on Wilson’s paintings and to assemble such a significant body of his work. Wilson is so a renowned and accomplished carver in wood and metal. Many of the 40 works on display are unique and personalized images of coastal creatures such as orcas and ravens, the undersea world,
and several stylized maps of Aboriginal territories. The exhibition reveals with equal force a contemporary voice that evokes the artist’s concern for the environment and the indigenous Haisla language. When these pressing themes share space with the historical visual language he has mastered, the two forces are sometimes intriguingly – if uncomfortably – juxtaposed. • Lyle Wilson will offer a free, public presentation on his work at the Maple Ridge Art Gallery on Saturday, June 30 at 11:30 a.m.
Raffle Enter a raffle for a sterling silver brooch engraved by Lyle Wilson. Tickets available at the Maple Ridge Art Gallery gift shop. Draw date is Saturday, June 30 at 1 p.m.

says. For McAsh, the sword, more than any other weapon, changed history. He believes the leaders of today could learn a thing or two from the sword and what it symbolizes. “In the past, kings actually fought in battle. Nowadays, presidents and prime ministers don’t fight any more,” says McAsh, a self-described pacifist, who knows first hand the horrors of war. “Henry V led his troops into combat to the point where he actually had a portion of his coronet sheared off. The sword implied honour, it implied loyalty, it implied service to the nation.”

Last year’s concerts drew hundreds of spectators and featured artists such as Paul Garay, Natasha Zimbaro, Aurelius, Echo Park, Big Daddy Jay Phillips, Peter Tam, and Denis Leclerc. • Interested artists can call604467-2420 or inquiries@downtownma-

Sword from p20 “The fact that I’ve been an actor on stage and television, gives me an advantage when approaching the choreography of fight scenes because I am looking at them in context of the script - not just a scene of visual violence,” says McAsh, who recently moved to Maple Ridge. “A horrendous scene of gratuitous violence tacked on by a third party is totally ridiculous.” McAsh has studied the art of the sword and researched historically authentic sword techniques in museums all over the world, including France, Germany, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Italy, England, Scotland and Wales, the U.S. and Canada. In addition to sword skills, McAsh has studied unarmed combat for over 40 years and holds two advanced black belts. “If we don’t understand where we came from, it is very hard to understand where we are going to go,” he

ittens and puppies are very much like human babies – they need lots of attention. They need us to watch over them to make sure they don’t get into trouble. They need warmth, security and lots of love. Quite often when a family gets a new puppy, they try to do it during a period when they can devote some time to the new arrival, maybe take some time off of work, spend a few days at home making sure the puppy settles in and is comfortable in their new sur-
roundings. The same is not always true for kittens. Because grown cats, by nature, are more selfsufficient than dogs, many people believe they can bring a kitten home, set them up with food, a littler box, a few toys and all is well. Many people don’t worry too much about leaving a kitten home alone all day while they go off to work. While kittens will, in fact, fend for themselves for the day, emotionally, they will suffer. Contrary to popular belief, cats are very social animals who thrive on company. See Pets, p25

Thank you to everyone in our community for helping us get off to a great start! To keep each other company Pets from p24 Young kittens, like many other animals, learn most of their social skills through play with others. More and more rescue groups have implemented the policy of only adopting kittens out in pairs. This is especially the case when a kitten is going into a home with no other animals. This is not a strategy to adopt out extra kittens, not a two-forone deal to clear out inventory. It is simply something that is done in the best interest of the animals in our care. Two kittens will keep each other company and provide one another with the warmth they so desperately need when they are very young. They will entertain each other and hopefully leave your plants and furniture in peace. They will comfort each other. They will sleep together, eat together, wait for you to get home together. They will still be thrilled to see you when you walk through that door at the end of a long day, but they won’t suffer the loneliness that a single kitten at home alone does. Of course, if you already have another cat, or five, or maybe a dog who loves feline company the kitten may

Although some people will argue that the bond of siblings (real or adopted) is the strongest, the bottom line is that a kitten needs another kitten to wrestle with. The role that this interaction plays in their healthy development is unquestionable. So if you are considering adding a new feline member to your family, and you are partial to kittens, please consider bringing a pair home. They will have each other for company. You will be able to rest easy that while you are away your little bundle of fluffy joy is not lonely, and hopefully they will wrestle with each other and not your favorite vase or priceless china. If nothing else, you will have a pair that will be
bonded for life. Two is always better than one. – Magda Szulc is a

Getting into the swing With summer arriving this week, golfers are once again flocking to the local links. Neil Campbell chips out of the rough in front of the 15th green en route to a bogey at Meadow Gardens Golf Club Monday afternoon.
Burrards notch first victory Maple Ridge downs Burnaby 9-5 at home to snap winless streak by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter The Ridge Meadows Burrards got their first win of the season on Sunday, shutting down the Burnaby Lakers 9-5 at home. With just three points to show for nine games this season, the team’s first win came far later in the season than head coach Daren Fridge would have liked, but he’s just happy to have the monkey off his back. “It’s been a rough start,” admitted Fridge. “But what we learned Sunday night is that we can’t count on any one individu-
al. Everyone has to contribute, that’s how we’re going to win games.” The Burrards opened up an 8-2 lead in the second period thanks to seven goals from six different players. In all, 11 Maple Ridge players made it on the scoresheet. Randy Daly was the only Burrard to score twice, and added a pair of assists for a game-high four points. Tyler Codron, Simon Giourmetakis, Creighton Reid, Derek Lowe, Colton Porter. Riley Loewen, and Dayne Michaud each found the back of the net. The Burrards will need all hands on deck if they want to salvage their season and vie for a playoff spot, which will be difficult, considering the team hasn’t played with anything close to a full lineup all season. Last sea-
son’s top scorer, Curtis Dickson, is still out with an injured shoulder, and his return is anyone’s guess, said Fridge. Starting goaltender Chris Seidel left the team last week to pursue work interests in California, while the team has been without the services of highscoring attacker Joel Dalgarno for the entirety of this season due to work commitments. Forward Aaron Pascas missed this past weekend’s games after being involved in a car accident, and Daniel Amesbury is still out with a broken hand. But there’s reason to be optimistic about the second half of the WLA season, said Fridge. Defensive stalwart Creighton Reid returned to action this past weekend, providing some muchneeded stability to the team’s back-end, while back-up goalie
Drew Dickie proved he has what it takes to win, stopping 34 of 39 shots Sunday night. The Burrards second half schedule features six games against Nanaimo, New Westminster, and Coquitlam, the three teams they are chasing for playoff spot. Fridge said he is reminded of the B.C. Lions, who started the 2011 Canadian Football League season 1-6, before finishing 11-7, and went on to win the Grey Cup. “We’ve been in a lot of these games, and all it takes is three wins and we’re back in the mix,” he said. “I know we haven’t had much luck... but it’s up to me to coach our way out of this.” The Burrards play in Langley Wednesday, then host the Nanaimo Timbermen on Sunday, 6:45 p.m.
With the playoffs fast approaching, the Ridge Meadows Burrards midget girls’ lacrosse squad came away with a much-needed win over rival Port Coquitlam on Father’s Day, defeating their league rivals 8-3 to move up the midget girls’ standings. The Burrards were led by Sierra LaForge, who recorded a hat trick in the win, while Megan Michaud scored her first goal of the year. Kiana Henry also had a strong game, adding two assists. The win capped a busy week for the midget girls’ Burrards that saw them shut out New Westminster 1 by a score of 3-0 last Tuesday, before losing 3-2 to Port Moody on Thursday and tying New Westminster 2 on Saturday, 3-3. Georgia Hamm, Ellen Harrison, Ciarra Currin, Marlo Bellamy, Brittany Irvine, and goalie Regan Eaton each had standout performances. In the junior B men’s West Coast Junior Lacrosse League, the Ridge Meadows Burrards beat the North Shore Eagles 7-5 at home last Wednesday to improve to 8-1-5 for 17 points and fifth place in the 10-team league. The Burrards took and early 4-2 lead in the first period and were able to stay ahead of the Eagles for the final two periods, never relinquishing the lead. Leading the team in points this season is the trio of Scott Hegedus, Charlie Sallstrom and Brenden Kidd. Hegedus leads the team in goals with 22, and points, with 29. Sallstrom has 28 points this season (15 goals, 13 assists), while Kidd has 27 (12 goals, 15 assists). The intermediate A Maple Ridge Burrards of the B.C. Intermediate Lacrosse League were victorious over the Port Coquitlam Saints Monday night, trouncing their rivals on the other side of the Pitt River by a score of 13-8. The Burrards are tied for fourth in the 10-team league with a 7-4 record, good for 14 points in 11 games. Joe Olson leads the team in points with 53 (15 goals, 38 assists) after just 11 games. Leading the team in scoring is attacker James Baker, who with 30 goals in 10 games, has averaged a hat-trick every outing this season. In midget A1 play, the Ridge Meadows Burrards blanked the Delta Islanders 9-0 at home on Friday. The Burrards are fourth in their nine-team league, with nine wins and seven losses. In tyke and mini-tyke play, Addison Sessions, Jaime Thomson, Luke Christenson, and Brendan Mower each received MVP honours. sports@mapleridgenews.com

Jr. B Flames make offseason signings by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter The Ridge Meadows Flames aren’t wasting any time this off-season assembling their team for the 2012/13 Pacific International Junior Hockey League season. The local junior B hockey club announced a handful of new signings last week, and coach and general man-
ager Jamie Fiset hopes they will add some grit and scoring. The Flames finished with just 11 wins in 44 games last season, and were eliminated in the first round of the PIJHL playoffs by the Aldergrove Kodiaks in six games. Despite last season’s results, Fiset said his team is not in need of a drastic overhaul. “We had a good group
of kids,” he said. “We didn’t need to blow the team up, we just need to add some pieces.” Specifically, Fiset said he’s looking to add physical players and scoring depth. “Alex Smith and Trevor Harris were our only two physical players last year,” said Fiset.

That lack of physical presence was evident in the Flames’ first round playoff series with the Kodiaks. “They did a real good job of grinding us down.” Fiset is hoping six-foot tall forwards Jake Taylor and Clayton Lake will provide that much-needed size up front and help the team’s forecheck. “We think [Taylor] is going to be a big piece of the puzzle for us,” Fiset said of the former major midget player. Lake also comes from the major midget league, where had 11 points in 32 games for the Fraser Valley Bruins. “He didn’t put up great numbers in major midget, but he will play a meaningful role with us,” said Fiset. Also signed from the Bruins are Jake Virtanen and Mike Nolan. However, Fiset concedes there is a good chance the six-foot-one 16-year-old could go to Junior A or the Western Hockey League next season. “That’s the risk you take, but we encourage all of our players to try out for junior A and WHL teams,” said Fiset. “The players that come to our camp end up better prepared.” At five-foot-eight and 140 pounds, Nolan doesn’t bring much size, but Fiset said the pointper-game player will add some much-needed scoring with the departure of Mike Bissett and Danny Brandys. “He’s strong, he plays the puck well, and has a lot of weapons at his disposal,” Fiset said. The Flames also added forward Chris Nakamura from Hollyburn Winter Club. Fiset describes him as one of the better forwards at the midget A1 level. On the back end, the Flames signed major midget defenceman Nick Coltura, and picked up Nolan Wallinger from the Mission Icebreakers. The Flames also picked up goaltender RJ Bruni, who was an affiliate with the Abbotsford Pilots last season. “I’m very happy with everyone we’ve added,” said Fiset. “We went head-hunting this offseason, and we were able to pick up nearly everyone on our list.” sports@mapleridgenews.com

Pitt golfer 4th at B.C. Mid-Amateur by R o b e r t M a n g e l s d o r f staff reporter Pitt Meadows’ Greg Bismeyer fired rounds of 74, 70, and 75 to finish three over-par at the 2012 B.C. Golf Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship last week, good enough for a share of fourth place, and second in the Master-40 Division Bismeyer found himself tied with Courtenay’s Greg Koster after Koster birdied his last hole to finish the final day of play with a round of 76, forcing the two into a playoff to decide the Master-40 Division champion. Both players headed back to the par 5 18th hole at the Summerland Golf and Country club for the playoff. Unfortunately, Bismeyer hit his first tee shot out-of-bounds, while Koster got on the green in regulation. A two-putt par sealed the victory as Bismeyer was not able to save par. Kevin Carrigan of Victoria was the overall champion at the event with a final round 71 to finish up four under-par after 54 holes.
Local D-man picked for U-17 tryouts Maple Ridge’s Dalton Yorke will be going
to B.C. Hockey’s U-17 Pacific Region Summer Camp next month after qualifying at the U-17 B.C. Cup in May. The camp is the next phase in B.C. Hockey’s selection process for the U-17 Team Pacific squad, which will be travelling to Quebec for the U-17 World Hockey Challenge in December. Yorke got the call last week, and will be one of 67 players from across B.C. and Alberta to be picked for the five-day selection camp in Kamloops. Yorke is one of only 16 defenceman from B.C. to get an invite, as well as the only local player to make the cut.
Pitt players named to Selects team A pair of Pitt Meadows lacrosse players have been picked to join the elite Burnaby Mountain Selects field lacrosse program. Riley Glemnitz was named to the Selects’ senior team, while Mackenzie Rope was named to the U-15 squad. The program, run by SFU head coach Brent Hoskins, takes local field lacrosse players to elite-level scouting tournaments south of the border in the hopes of landing the players NCAA scholarships. sports@mapleridgenews.com

Dec 27, 1936 ~ June 2, 2012 BC Cancer

IN MEMORIAM
GALT John-Paul Dec 13, 1969 ~ June 9, 2012
Liz Hansell was born on December 27th, 1936 in Vulcan, Alberta. She left high school to pursue a career in radiology and later took a two year course in England. After that she took a position at the Maple Ridge hospital where she quickly rose to be department head. Liz retired in 1995 and moved to Kaslo in 2008. Liz was an integral part of brother Bill’s family. She developed countless friends and will be greatly missed. The funeral for Liz was held on Saturday, June 9th at the Kaslo Community Church. Donations to the ALS Society would be appreciated.
Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away suddenly June 15. Survived by her family; husband Joe of 59 years, son Fred and wife Lori, grandchildren Taylor and Tony, son Dan and wife Laura, grandchildren Kimberley, Troy and Austin, son Bob and wife Christine, grandchildren Danielle, Jason, James and Sam and great grandchild Brodie, daughter Kelly and husband Ken, daughter Penny and husband Mark, grandchildren Ashley, Shelley and Heather. Pre-deceased by son Carl. Friend for life Dorothy Folz. Mom (Tudy) loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchild very much. She loved life and Bingo. No Service as per request. Condolences may be sent to www.mapleridgefuneral.ca
.
Survived by daughter Dianne, son-in-law Derek, grandson Damon and a bun in the oven. Sisters Melody, Margaret and Stacy and brothers Kelly, Micheal and David and many more friends and family. J.P. was a kind person with a warm heart and a strong spirit. He would do anything for anyone and expected nothing in return. He passed too young at the age of 42, calmly in the presence of family. There will be a Celebration of Life on Sunday June 24 at 5pm at the Ranch Pub and Grill, a favourite place for J.P. to grab burgers and brews with the boys.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
“I am very proud to have been able to work with the calibre of Directors on the Board at the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation and with a very talented and professional staff. It has been an honour to work with a group with such dedication and expertise.
Every year the Foundation purchases the majority of the equipment needed at Ridge Meadows Hospital but, in addition, the Foundation has also been involved in several other worthwhile efforts. This includes funding 39 individuals to increase their skills and education for their work at Ridge Meadows Hospital and the health care services in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows as well as funding a research project entitled, “Unplanned Admission Following Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.” In addition, our efforts to make Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows a healthier community included the launch of our Health Investment Grants program two years ago. Over the last year, we have funded the following projects:
› Grief and Loss Support Group with the Ridge Meadows Hospice Society and the Family Education and Support Centre › Sensory Modulation Care with the psychiatry department at Ridge Meadows Hospital › Technological teaching aids for Public Health › Medical and Community Partners Pilot Project with Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Community Services, and the Ridge Meadows Division of Family Practice › Health Information Resource Centre at Ridge Meadows Hospital › A Hive Kitchen with the Family Education and Support Centre The Board, the staff and all the volunteers working on behalf of the Foundation have
created a community of care that supports the development of a healthier Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. We are very proud of the way that our neighbours and friends have come together to support our community and each other. My sincere thanks and appreciation to our donors, the Board of Directors, our staff, and the many, many volunteers who make up this great organization.” Sincerely,
Mike Murray, ray, Chair Board of Directors, RMHF

Over the last 20 years, Portrait Homes has established and maintained one vision in the residential new home industry, and that is to exceed the expectations of each of their new home buyers. They believe in the long-term value of each and every client they work with. This year, once again, Portrait Homes have invested in the long term health of their clients by donating $10,000 to Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation to help purchase essential equipment. “We are committed to contributing positively to the community we share and with those we live and work with. It is a privilege to partner with Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation to ensure that all residents of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have a well equipped hospital, able to meet the health care needs of all,” said Robert Grimm, principal at Portrait Homes. Thanks to their generous donation we are able to purchase life saving equipment that will enable our health care team to provide excellent care to our community.
The Envision Financial Community Endowment, administrated by First West Foundation, has provided an $11,600 grant to the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation. This grant will be used to purchase sport and music equipment for residents to use during their stay at the Maple Ridge Treatment Centre’s addictions recovery program. Therapeutic recreation is often overlooked as an effective form of rehabilitation support by those outside the field of addictions counselling, however, a simple game of football can be a tool to practice anger management, acceptance, compassion and teamwork, and enable patients to connect and share in ways that group or individual counselling cannot provide. This grant will support music, sports and recreation, which generally receive very limited funding, but are integral to rehabilitation, instilling confidence and creating a sense of selfworth. By helping men develop new attitudes and behaviours related to their addictions through therapeutic recreation, the Maple Ridge Treatment Centre is creating a healthier quality of life for the men in residence and their families.
Over 15 years ago the Auxiliary to Ridge Meadows Hospital provided funding to help purchase a bus for the residents of Baillie House and now that bus is aging and needs to be replaced. The Auxiliary are once again showing their commitment to health care and seniors with a donation of $10,000 to help purchase the new bus. Resident outings are frequently planned including luncheons, shopping trips, sightseeing tours, trips to the casino and more. The residents of Baillie House rely on the bus for their outings which help them stay connected to their community. Purchased in 1995, the bus is now showing significant signs of aging and, for a multitude of reasons, Baillie House staff has had to delay or cancel outings. By providing them with a new, reliable, safer mode of transportation, they can immediately improve the quality of life for those living in residential care. Everyone is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new bus. The Auxiliary to Maple Ridge Hospital (now Ridge Meadows Hospital) was started 58 years ago and has been proudly helping Ridge Meadows Hospital ever since. Today they are a volunteer driven organization with 93 members.
Maple Ridge Lions Club presented $5,000 from their annual fundraiser ‘A Carnation for a Donation’ to assist in the purchase of a new birthing bed in the maternity department at Ridge Meadows Hospital. The maternity department at RMH has 6 birthing beds that are used for pelvic exams, initial inductions, assessments, ultrasounds and deliveries. These beds have been used on a daily basis for over 10 years and are now in need of replacement. Due to usage, and aging, two of the beds are no longer optimal for use. Approximately 900 women give birth at RMH each year. Child birth has potential to be a highly complicated and stressful experience for mom, baby and the medical team. In order to reduce these risks, provide each expectant mom with a positive birthing experience, and ensure the best possible outcome for each infant, they need to have excellent health care. The new bed will improve the speed in which the medical team can respond to a change in patient needs, reduce injuries to staff, and provide better support to the mom and babies before, during, and after labour and delivery.

Leaving a legacy… you really can make a difference! Have you ever thought about leaving a gift for a not for profit organization that you admire? It’s actually quite easy. You can arrange for a gift in several ways, the most common being a charitable gift through a bequest in your Will. Many people set aside a certain dollar amount. Others leave a percentage of their estate or any assets left over after their family has been provided for. Some people donate something they own, like a car or their home. Others leave a paid up life insurance policy, securities, RRSP, RRIF, or other financial investment. Everyone can leave a gift from his or her estate, a word used to describe everything that you own at the time of your death. Most people leave an estate when they die, even though they may not have a great deal of wealth. To include your wish to leave a gift to a specific organization you must state your intention in your Will. Without a Will, you lose control over your property after death. Your property and finances are settled according to provincial laws whether or not they coincide with your and your family’s wishes. Some people tell the not-for-profit organization that they’ve left a
bequest. But that is up to you. Not-for-profits often like to know in advance so they can recognize your generosity. They can also tell you about opportunities for giving for a specific purpose. A bequest gift is a wonderful way to recognize or create a memorial for someone who has made a difference in your life. You just need to make it clear that the gift is given in memory of a particular person. If you need help to arrange for your gift for Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation, call the foundation office at 604.463.1822. Or, if you have a professional advisor you are working with—like a financial or estate planner, lawyer, accountant, trust officer or insurance agent—you could talk with him or her about leaving a gift. A professional advisor can tell you about the tax benefits of planned gifts and can make sure you are getting the maximum tax and legal advantages allowed for your gift.
