Strahl to chair spy agency ‘watch dog’ committee Robert Freeman The Progress Former Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP Chuck Strahl has been named to chair the committee that reviews Canada’s spy agency — the Canadian Security Intelligence Service. BC Civil Liberties Association president Robert Holmes welcomed Strahl’s appointment, but hoped the Security Intelligence Review Committee (SIRC) will be given adequate resources to carry out its “watch dog” duties over CSIS, especially in light of the elimination of the Inspector General’s Office. That million-dollar cut was contained in the omnibus bill that Conservative MPs approved last week. The Inspector General’s role was also to monitor CSIS, and Public Affairs Minister Vic Toews was criticized by Opposition MPs for making the cut while the committee chair was still vacant. Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the appointment in a brief news release last Thursday. Strahl said it’s true SIRC shared the job of monitoring CSIS with the Inspector General, but he believed his appointment was more the result of the resignation of the former chair. He said SIRC - which meets three or four times a month — can’t function without a chair. “I wasn’t angling for the job,” Strahl said. “But when the PM’s office calls, it’s hard to say no.” “It’s an honour to do it,” he said. CSIS was given “extraordinary powers” to investigate terrorist activities around the world, but sometimes those investigations touch the lives of Canadians and their Charter rights. “This committee was put in place to ensure those rights are adequately protected,” Strahl said. High waters to test flood protection Evacuation alert issued for residents living outside the dikes Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Flood protection projects in Chilliwack are so far holding back the rising elevations of the mighty Fraser River. But much more water is on its way. With a “high stream flow advisory” issued Sunday, officials are keeping a watchful eye on potential flooding at Carey Point — a vulnerable area outside the city’s dike system. They’ve also issued an “evacuation alert” for all residents living outside the dike, meaning those residents should be prepared to evacuate on short notice. The river rose quickly over the
weekend because of heavy rains up north. Chilliwack MLA John Les has cancelled a trip to northeast B.C. because of the threat. The Fraser River is expected to hit high-water levels not seen in 40 years. “I remember 1972 and the water (then) was much higher than five years ago,” Les told The Progress. “I think I need to stick around here.” The waters could reach 6.5 to 7 metres at the Mission gauge by the weekend, according to predictions by the BC River Forecast Centre, with estimates of 12,000 to 13,000 cubic metres of water per second at Hope. “By the end of this week, we could easily see everything out-
side the dike flooded and a large amount of seepage inside,” Les said. Despite the rising water, both the recently constructed check dam and berm structure are holding up well so far, said Will Davis, chair of the Carey Point Improvement Society, on Monday morning. “That did take us off guard,” Davis told The Progress. “But so far the berm and the check dam are doing what they are supposed to be doing. “Unfortunately these are BandAid solutions to the bigger problem we’re facing of constant erosion.” One last rush from the snow melt mixed with rain is coming
down the Fraser from the upper watersheds, but they don’t know when it will arrive exactly. Regular dike patrols have begun, and the city will activate an Emergency Operations Centre. According to its response chart, flooding of the unprotected areas could start at six metres. The arrow hit 5.8 metres Monday morning. Last year at this time, some residential properties outside the dike had to be sandbagged. Some properties are nearing that point again. Last week they were losing about 24 feet a day to erosion, or a foot an hour near Carey Point. It was “alarming” to look at the comparison photos of what’s been lost, said Davis. Continued: RIVER/ p4

Sparks fly before public meeting on gravel even begins Robert Freeman The Progress Sparks are already flying as a bylaw to regulate gravel mining in the Fraser Valley Regional District goes to public hearing next week. But there will not be a vote to adopt the bylaw at the June 26 meeting, which will go back to FVRD directors and staff for further work that could take the rest of the year to complete. “The newly developed bylaw will protect our region’s most sensitive
areas and ensure that any gravel removal is carried out in the most sustainable and environmentally sound manner that has our public’s best interest in mind,” FVRD chair Sharon Gaetz said in a news release announcing the Chilliwack meeting. But Walter Neufeld, president of the FVRD Citizens Association, said unless the FVRD “moves rapidly to introduce measures for accountability, inclusion and transparency, it seems probable that impacted residents ... will take the gloves off.” He charged that FVRD directors
are “being used as corporate whips to clear the way for corporate profit at the expense of ordinary citizens, their rights and the environment which sustains us all.” Even before Gaetz’s release, residents opposed to the Aggregate Pilot Project - which proposes a tri-colour mapping scheme where future gravel pits may be allowed - were scrapping with MLA Randy Hawes by email. Hawes is a former FVRD chair and Minister of State for Mining who started APP negotiations back
in 2004 with the gravel industry, the FVRD and the B.C. government. But those negotiations took place behind closed doors, with no public input, a fact that continues to irritate residents and raise allegations of collusion. Lake Errock resident Tony Rees sent an email last week urging FVRD residents to attend the Chilliwack meeting and protect the region’s water resources, which he believes are endangered by gravel mining. “This plan was devised behind closed doors with no impacted
Fraser Valley residents involved, and not surprisingly it does not address community concerns, such as noise, air and water pollution, traffic problems, the dismal record of regulation compliance of operators, lowering of property values of residents, and the irreversible destruction of water resources,” he said. Lake Errock resident Reg Longmore accused Hawes in another email of political “double-speak” and “hiding the true facts” about the APP. Continued: GRAVEL/ p8

Garden tour has a bit of everything The Progress Take a tranquil trip through some of Chilliwack’s best gardens on the Garden & Lifestyle Tour June 23, put on by the Rotary Club of Chilliwack. One of the stops is a unique property that appeared on the TV show Canadian Pickers. It’s all part of the excitement in store for the 10th annual Garden & Lifestyle Tour this Saturday. A total of 10 fantastic, worldclass gardens will be showcased, with a chance to visit Minter Gardens included in the $20 ticket price. The diversity reflects a huge range of personal tastes and lifestyles, and this year’s garden tour in Chilliwack is no exception.
“There’s been a drive in recent years on the decor front to create outdoor rooms, which have become extensions of our homes,” said Rotary Club member Dianne Darke, chair of the Garden Tour committee. “The concept of a garden means different things to different people, and we wanted to include gardens that represent all the variety and beauty we have in Chilliwack.” For the first time this year, a local Sto:lo family is participating, Darke said. Their garden is located on Chilliwack River Road, showcasing their active, outdoor lifestyle, and pride in First Nations culture. Some gardens will be showing off exquisite landscaping techniques, well pruned perennials,

or colourful groups of annuals. There’s one garden tidily tucked in on a corner lot, while another is on a sprawling acreage. Some have model trains, while others boast fantail pheasants, or meandering creeks. One of the stops on the tour in Sardis is all about creating a serene space. It offers the tranquility of an alpine meadow with ponds, water features, and multi-level plantings. First-time participant Henry Kikkert said he’s been collecting antique vehicles and gas station memorabilia for more than 40 years, while his wife tends their lovely garden. They’ve welcomed car clubs and TV types in the past. “But it’s the first time we’ve ever been a stop on a garden tour,” he said. “We thought it was
a nice way to raise some money for charity.” The Popkum property was featured on the Canadian Pickers last season, showing off some of Henry’s vintage signs, tools and equipment, and the back garden offering a great view of Mount Cheam and Bridal Falls. Ticketholders for the tour can follow a suggested route and vote for their favourite when they’re done. Proceeds go to Rotary projects ranging from student scholarships, and supporting the hospital to global efforts to eradicate polio. 10th annual Garden & Lifestyle Tour, June 23, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. tickets $20 at the Progress office. A 36-year-old Surrey man was arrested last Thursday after Chilliwack RCMP attended a suspected drug house on Cook Street. Police said they attempted to stop and question two men suspected of coming from the residence, one of them a known drug trafficker. Both men fled on foot, but the known drug trafficker was later arrested. Police are still looking for the second suspect. A large quantity of what police believe is methamphetamine was seized as a result of the arrest, along with a prohibited weapon and “evidence suggesting drug trafficking,” police said. “This is a perfect example of how a tip from the public has resulted in an arrest of someone obviously involved in the drug trade,” RCMP Sgt. Steve McLeod said. “The seizure of more illegal drugs that will not be sold on the streets is significant,” he said. Police said investigators were following up on information that drugs were being sold from the Cook Street address, and attempted to stop two men in the area suspected of coming from the residence. Both men fled, but one was later seen “prowling in a nearby backyard.” He was located by plain clothes officers, but while speaking to police he again attempted to flee. The police officers gave chase and were able to apprehend him without further incident. McLeod said Chilliwack’s Crime Reduction Unit will continue to make life “uncomfortable” for people involved in the drug trade. “We know that this type of activity brings violence and other property crime to areas where drug sales are taking place,” he said. “We encourage people to continue to provide information on residences where drug trafficking is suspected of taking place.” Information can be called in to the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611.

The erosion is caused by a shifting scour hole that resulted in a significant amount of land falling into the river from Carey Point to Island 22. “The erosion has actually slowed down with the arrival of the high water,” said Davis. “So in a roundabout way we’re happy the high water is keeping the erosion at bay.” They are starting to see some seepage, which is typical. There are about 15 properties in the unprotected area outside the dike, which covers about 350 acres of agricultural land. In the long term they’ll most likely have to move the berm closer to the dike. “We started out a couple hundred feet from the river. And because of the erosion now it’s closer to 60,” he said. But the situation is better than last year, because the water hasn’t reached the dike yet. “That’s all because of the berm and the check dam,” Davis said. “They’re helping everyone.” The berm was originally constructed in 1997 by the province. It failed last year during a prolonged period of high water. Neither city nor provincial officials claimed responsibility for the orphaned structure, despite ongoing requests by affected property owners to reconstruct it. The intense negotiations and ongoing meetings yielded results. The berm was rebuilt this winter by the society formed by group of affected property owners, with the province and the City of Chilliwack chipping in $25,000 each, while residents put in $70,000 to $85,000 in cash and inkind donations. City of Chilliwack also built a separate structure to keep flows away from the city dike, an engineered check dam at the Orchard Slough, for about $100,000.

Parents disappointed with LRB ruling The Progress A Labour Relations Board (LRB) ruling last week did nothing to improve the current state of educational strife in B.C. schools, says a Chilliwack parent representative. The LRB ruled on Friday that while teachers were well within their rights to withdraw from extracurricular activities, they were not given leave to stop participating in parent-teacher interviews. In her decision, Ritu Mahil, LRB vice-chair, stated the teachers’ union had not undertaken an unlawful strike by directing its members to refrain from participating in activities outside of instructional hours, including supervising or instructing student performances, sports teams, clubs, field trips, graduation
and awards ceremonies, “which are truly voluntary and extracurricular. However, Mahil did note the union was in violation by authorizing teachers to withdraw from activities like parent-teacher interviews and kindergarten orientation, which “although they occur outside of instructional hours, may nonetheless be part of their work duties. The union has been directed to cease and desist from that stance. Gord Byers, president of the Chilliwack District Parents’ Advisory Council, said that while he understands teachers not wanting to give up their bargaining leverage, he fears students will suffer in the long run. Without after-school activities like sports and theatre productions
to keep students engaged, Byers believes some will lose interest. “It’s basically going to boil down to a school year that’s going to be 8-4, he said. “There’s no way around it, they’re going to lose out. Outgoing Chilliwack Teachers’ Association (CTA) president Katharin Midzain said it’s still too early to jump to conclusions regarding next year. She said teacher action will depend largely on government proceedings this summer. “If we get an imposed contract that has a lot of restrictions or things taken away, I think it will not bear well for the extra things teachers do, said Midzain. At the CTA’s annual general meeting in May, teachers were

Tough pill to swallow The province’s highest voice on all things medical, Dr. Perry Kendall, made a pretty bold statement earlier this week when he claimed that MDMA should be legalized in order to be regulated. MDMA, as in ecstasy. MDMA as in the drug that claimed the life of numerous young people over the last year in this very health region. But we have to wonder what the point would be in regulating MDMA at all. This isn’t a pain killer. It doesn’t have positive qualities that make it useful in pharmacology, health care or even psychiatry. Does it? The obvious problem is that street level ecstasy can’t be trusted. When it’s cooked up in a clandestine, unregulated lab, the chemicals can vary from tab to tab, batch to batch. We’ve seen, and reported on, the dangers of the drug in the past. It’s no secret that it is the gangs who thrive on the sale of illegal drugs. But don’t forget that regulated, legal drugs created with a therapeutic intent are stolen and re-sold every single day. Ecstasy is a popular rave drug, making it a ‘hit’ with party-going teens. So what would regulating the drug do? Could a teen walk into a
The Chilliwack

R AESIDE
drugstore and buy ecstasy before heading out to party, in Kendall’s theory of regulation? Probably not. But adults would, one would assume. And kids would still get their hands on it, somehow. One could argue that the same has been true for alcohol for decades. But hey, nothing bad ever came from a teenaged drinking binge, right? Wrong. Vital Stats reports that total deaths directly related to alcohol in Canada in 2000 was well over 300. That includes over intoxication, alcohol poisoning, and numerous diseases directly linked to alcoholism, such as alcoholic liver disease and chronic pancreatitis. When you factor in the deaths indirectly related to alcohol, that number jumps to 1,689. We’re not pushing a return to prohibition — that certainly didn’t work. But it’s laughable to suggest that regulating a drug will make the world a safer place for our children. After all, look in the right places and you can still find moonshine. ~ Black Press

Rekindling the debate over doctor-assisted suicide It was a Monday evening. Tom lay heavily sedated in palliative care in Chilliwack General Hospital. He had been diagnosed with colon cancer just two months before and immediately had surgery. But now the cancer was ravaging his body. Vital organs had shut down. His limbs were swelling. “We have to remove the IV fluids,” the nurse said gently. “But he needs them,” I struggled to argue. Exactly two years before, Tom’s mom had laid in a nursing home in the final torment of Alzheimer’s disease. She had faced the same palliative procedure. I knew what the nurse meant. “How long?” I asked not wanting to know. “Perhaps two weeks.” Numbed, I nodded. Then, just 12 hours later, my husband died. Across the province and the nation, thousands of families face

the agony of watching a loved one die. Some pass mercifully quickly. Others, though, may face years of pain, suffering, and devastating misery from a ravaging, fatal illness. Such is the case for Kelowna-based Gloria Taylor who suf fers amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease, a fatal neurodegenerative disease Margaret that robs people of their motor skills, EVANS tormenting them with increasing disability as weakening muscles and atrophy. Following in the footsteps of ALS-sufferer Sue Rodriguez, Taylor along with two other plaintiffs appealed to the B.C. Supreme Court for the right to doctorassisted suicide. Rodriguez failed in her mission 18 years ago, but
on Friday, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Lynn Smith ruled that the provisions in the Criminal Code making physician-assisted death illegal are invalid. The ground-breaking ruling has opened up a national debate on euthanasia. “Under s.52 of the Constitution Act, the provisions are declared invalid,” wrote Smith in her 395page written judgement. “They (the plaintiffs) succeed because the provisions unjustifiably infringe the equality rights of Gloria Taylor and the rights to life, liberty and the security of the person of Gloria Taylor, Lee Carter and Hollis Johnson.” However she stated that the operation of that declaration is suspended for one year to allow Parliament time to explore what has to be done although she gave exception in Taylor’s case. Understandably, there is sharp division between those who sup-
port strict safeguards and absence of loopholes in upholding the right to die debate while those who don’t support it see nightmarish problems with elder abuse, inappropriate family involvement, and lack of clarity of a patient’s clear and independent intent in the final stages of life. Doctor assisted suicide and euthanasia are not new. It is allowed in one or other form in Washington and Oregon in the U.S. and in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. Aside from all the legal issues, the emotional debate on the ethics and morals of euthanasia and doctor assisted suicide continue to be argued. Smith clearly recognized that. “The evidence shows that thoughtful and well-motivated people can and have come to different conclusions about whether physician-assisted death can be ethically justifiable,” wrote Smith.

“The major medical associations in Canada, the United Kingdom, some other Commonwealth countries and the United States have all taken positions opposed to physician-assisted death. On the other hand, some individual physicians in those countries take a different view, as do some medical associations, physicians and politicians in jurisdictions where physicianassisted death is permitted.” But will Parliament follow through with changes? Possibly not for some time. Either the B.C. government or federal government is expected to appeal the ruling. But in March, Quebec’s National Assembly committee released a report calling on their provincial government to legalize euthanasia along the lines in the Netherlands. For Taylor, though, the ruling is a victory giving her the choice to die with dignity in her own way.

FHA out of touch with health care? It is outrageous that the head of the rehabilitation unit at CGH, Dr. Ken Hirst and other medical staff were not consulted about the upcoming closure of this important hospital resource in our community. We congratulate Dr. Hirst for coming forward publicly with his concerns and outlining the negative patient and family impact this closure will bring. Fraser Health Authority officials stated that the closure would act as “an addition to rehab options rather than a cut and result in better health out-
comes.” Dr. Hirst disagreed, and stated in your cover story on June 12, “there has been no communication or apparent consideration of all the ramifications.” In our opinion, our doctors and other medical professionals should always be included by the health authority at the very beginning of all disclosures. The doctors are the experts and know what each community needs with respect to health care and health facilities. We do not feel that some lofty governmentappointed personnel, who appear
to be out of touch with the reality of health care, should make decisions in isolation. In closing, we question why only now is MLA John Les becoming involved with FHA’s decision. He stated, “It’s about time the community was shown some respect.” Where were you, John, when the closure was first reported May 29? As well, MLA Gwen O’Mahony is saying she has concerns and was asking questions. What has she done? Suzanne and Ken Hepting
NDP win not because of ‘right-wing split’ Every media outlet in southern B.C. has expressed surprise over the last few weeks over the byelection win in Chilliwack/Hope by the NDP and specifically by Gwen O’ Mahony. Prior to the election of April 19th, some political “pundits” were predicting a win by either the BC Liberals or by the BC Conservatives. Only a few were giving the NDP much chance. They based their assumptions on the fact that the NDP had never won before in the Chilliwack area. Such highly simplistic evaluations could be expected from political novices; however, one would expect a bit more thought from people who supposedly spend their lives in the political realm of BC politics. However; these mistaken predictions paled in comparison to many of the more recent explanations as to why Gwen O’Mahony won in such a positive manner. I could not believe
what I was reading when I read that many media writers explained Gwen’s victory as a result of the so-called “right-wing split”. Many even went so far as to state that if there had not been a Conservative candidate that the Liberals would have won. Such nonsensical statements ignore the hard reality of what has occurred in this area over the past three years and give no credence at all to the intelligence of the electorate. I was personally very involved in all three of Gwen’s campaigns over the past three years. I was her campaign manager in 2009 and in 2001 and played a major role in this more recent byelection win. I know for a fact that there were at least three very powerful reasons why Gwen won this by-electionreasons that had nothing to do with the “rightwing split”. First, Gwen has been a “canvassing machine” in three successive elec-
tions. She has personally knocked on over 30,000 doors since early 2009. I know, because I either accompanied her on most of those visits and/or personally planned every single canvassing effort. Gwen was and is very able at the door and has the unique ability to get her message across quickly. People sense that she is a conscientious person- one really worth electing. Secondly, this recent by-election brought to the local NDP a wellorganized campaign like never seen before. There were several hundred volunteers who came out to ensure that the voters were contacted and our positive message was put forth. While the Liberals ran on a negative, attack campaign, the NDP message of a positive alternative resonated. Thirdly, for the first time in history, the NDP matched the opposition financially. In the past, we often had to run a campaign
on 10% or so of what the BC Liberals had. This makes it very difficult to conduct proper newspaper advertising, radio ads or flyer distribution. For once, the NDP was on an equal par in these areas and our efforts paid off. For any person to suggest that the Liberals would have won this by-election if there had not been a Conservative candidate is pure nonsense. I asked many of our canvassers what the issues were that they heard at the door. The constant refrain heard was an urgent need to get rid of the Liberals. It is very obvious that, if there had not been a Conservative candidate, the vast majority of the 25% who voted Conser vative would have either stayed home or voted for Gwen O’Mahony. So, please, let’s put this fallacy to bed forever- the “right-wing” split was NOT the reason the NDP won in Chilliwack/Hope. Dick Harrington, Chilliwack”

Gravel meeting GRAVEL from p3 “You have yet to give a satisfactory answer as to why the public were never allowed to participate in ‘behind closed door meetings’ that the aggregate industry were so obviously guiding,” Longmore wrote. But Hawes shot back that Longmore was “fear mongering,” when the APP will only increase the “scrutiny” of gravel pit operations. “The APP does not decrease the scrutiny that now takes place by the Ministry of Environment, DFO, and others and the same standards are to be met whether there is an APP or not,” Hawes wrote. “I fail to understand why you persist in spreading these falsehoods.” He said the APP is about planning future gravel operations, and gives local governments “much more say” in permit conditions over removal operation like noise and dust control. But to date there has been no government remedy proposed, local or provincial, to the operations of existing gravel mines that lie behind much of the public anger. FVRD directors have said publicly in the past that the gravel industry would not negotiate, if public representatives were included in the talks. The courts have to date favoured the gravel industry in court cases launched by the FVRD.

Hi Mom/Grandma: Where to begin? The obvious perhaps. You are deeply missed. We are reminded of you every day, both as our mother and grandmother and in the role you played sharing Terry’s story and nurturing his values and vision. We have heard often over the past year that time heals. They remain only words - losing you is still very fresh, very real and very painful. We feel misplaced at times questioning why we go on - we are unsteady and there is discomfort in every step - we try to follow your example of being strong. We know you are happy now reunited with Terry and too many loved ones but selÀshly would rather have you here. We have memories, they are crystal clear, happy and powerful but we are not accepting that we will not experience more, ever. We miss your unconditional love, your appreciation and pride for everything we do no matter how trivial it might be to others. You were our Mom and Grandma, mentor, protector and head cheer leader. We are individually and collectively not the same, a little less then before you left us. Sunday was Father’s Day though like the 364 days since you left us our thoughts will also be of you.

advised not to plan any out-of-school activities for the next school year. Chilliwack teacher Clint Johnston, who will be taking over as CTA president in July, doesn’t hold out much hope for teacher involvement in extracurricular activities next year given the membership already “clearly voted” this year to withdraw from those services. But it’s not a decision that would be made lightly, he said. “We understand the importance of extracurricular activities, it’s why we chose to involve ourselves in them,” said Johnston, a parent of five children; four in the public school system. “But when you feel your voice is being taken away from you ... when you’re only left with certain actions you can take, those inevitably probably become the actions you do take.”

Pipeline ‘safest’ way to move oil products, says Kinder Morgan Robert Freeman The Progress Crude oil and tar sands are pumped through Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline with National Energy Board approval, says a spokesperson for the company.
And tar sands in the form of diluted bitumen is no more corrosive than conventional crude oil, according to the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association. “With respect to the question of (the Trans
Mountain) pipeline age, pipelines are proven to be the safest and most efficient means of transporting large volumes of crude oil and natural gas over land,” Kinder Morgan spokesperson Lexa Hobensfield
said in an email to The Progress. “Our industry safety record is first-class compared to any other way to move large quantities of energy that people need and use every day,” she said.
“This is absolutely by far the safest and most environmentally sound way to do that.” But Fraser Valley residents concerned about Kinder Morgan’s plan to “twin” the pipeline that runs from Alberta oil
fields to tankers waiting in Vancouver are “networking” with others down valley nonetheless. The diluted bitumen, and the impact of a pipeline rupture on Chilliwack’s under-
ground water supply, was a concern heard at a Tuesday night meeting of the Pipe Up Network, said organizer Wendy Major. “It’s like sandblasting the inside of the pipe,” she said, about bitumen moving through the pipeline. David Lavallee, whose documentary film ‘White Water Black Gold’ was shown at the Pipe Up meeting, also insisted that diluted bitumen is “much more dangerous” than crude oil and could not be cleaned up like a conventional oil spill. He said Kinder Morgan seems to have found an ally in the Conservative government of Stephen Harper and was even able to get approval to “clear-cut a swath” through a national forest for its pipeline. “They won’t talk about the things they should talk about, which is spills and their spill record,” he said. In January this year, a Kinder Morgan tank farm on Sumas Mountain saw a 110,000-litre spill, and in July, 2007, a Burnaby construction crew hit the pipeline and 234,000 litres of oil shot into the air for 25 minutes, covering nearby homes and flowing into Burrard Inlet. Kinder Morgan has promised extensive community consultations before proceeding with the twinning project, and the company president has met with the Chilliwack mayor. Hobensfield said any changes to products pumped through the pipeline must be approved by the National Energy Board, which includes “an opportunity for public comment” in the process. She said Kinder Morgan has “an extensive integrity and maintenance program in place to ensure the pipe and associated equipment are well operated and maintained.” “Pipelines are monitored 24/7 at a control centre equipped with sophisticated computerized sensing and control systems,” she said, with “automatic leak-detection alarm systems, automatic shut-off devices and devices that monitor the internal condition of the pipe.” rfreeman@theprogress.com

Progress Katie
Bartel 604.702.5575 • kbartel@theprogress.com
Competing to be a role model for young women Katie Bartel The Progress Jessica Wesson wants to show Chilliwack’s youth they too can step out of their shells and succeed. The 20-year-old Chilliwack resident is vying for top spot in next month’s Miss BC 2012 pageant. It’s something she would never have done just a few short years ago. “Growing up, I was self-conscious and quiet,” said Wesson, who graduated from Chilliwack secondary in 2009. A trip to Europe in her grad year, though, changed that. “That was my first trip, my first time on a plane, first time away from my family,” she said. “I took a leap of faith, and I loved it. “Since then, I’ve wanted to do things that please me and make me happy, regardless of whether they scare me.” Becoming Miss BC is one of those things. While Wesson won’t be required to sport a swimsuit this year (that component of the pageant was omitted to attract a wider selection of contestants)
she will be required to perform a choreographed number, walk the stage several times, and be interviewed by a panel of judges. But she’s not scared. “The only thing I’m nervous about is tripping in my heels,” she laughed. Unlike the stereotypical image of a beauty pageant contestant, Wesson isn’t competing for fame, glory, or to boast about her undeniable beauty. She’s competing to show others they can do things they love too, regardless of how shy or insecure they may be. “I want to be a role model for women and youth in B.C.,” said Wesson, who’s being sponsored for the pageant by Lucy Bruni Photography. Wesson, who’s lived in Chilliwack her whole life, also wants to shine a light on her beloved hometown. “I love it here,” she said. “People come here in the summer all the time, but Chilliwack has so much more to offer – they should be coming here all the time.” On June 24, Wesson will be hosting a fundraiser for Cops for Cancer, the pageant’s charity of choice, at the Village Classic
Car Show. She has also been diligently raising funds for the cause online and through a donation box at IGA on Menzies. It’s something she could easily get behind, she said. “Kids are very self-conscious about themselves, especially when they know they have something different about them, and I think it’s great to support a charity that sends these kids to a place where they can feel like everybody else.” The Miss BC Pageant is on July 2 and will be televised later in the summer. To donate to Wesson’s Cops for Cancer fundraiser, visit her charity page at www.copsforcancerbc.ca/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=1018247&sup id=354804368. Wesson also has a Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ JessicaWessonForMissBC2012. From June 15 to July 1, the community can vote for the Miss People’s Choice Award at www. missbc.ca. One vote per house, per day. kbartel@theprogress.com twitter.com/schoolscribe33
Jessica Wesson hopes that by competing for Miss B.C. next month, she’ll inspire other young women to go after their dreams no matter how challenging or frightening they may be. SUBMITTED
CSS team studying to win Envirothon 2012 Katie Bartel The Progress Chilliwack secondary’s Envirothon team is made up of not your average type of students. These kids don’t choose friends over studying; they’re not classroom clock watchers; and they’re not the type to count down the days to summer.
Quite the opposite. This group of five is more about adding onto to their knowledge workload than decreasing it. For five months Grade 12 student Zac Greenwood, along with Grade 11 students Joel Goshulak, Priya Nand, Tiffany Schulz, and Grade 10 student Jessica Layton have been studying everything they can on
Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania in preparation for this year’s Canon Envirothon competition – the largest North American high school environmental education competition around. And they’re doing it on top of their regular high school studies, many of which include advanced placement courses. “Basically I’ve destroyed
all my free time,” said Goshulak. They’ve cut out social time, extra-curricular activities, loaded up on caffeine, spent most nights studying into the wee hours, and some have even opted out of sleep altogether. “It’s a lot of pressure, but I think we’re kind of used to pressure,” said Schulz. And if they win, it’ll be

Friendly faces at Banners The owners may be new, however the “friendly” in Chilliwack’s “Friendly Banners Restaurant” will stay the same. James Lee, a local Realtor in town, recently took over ownership of the popular downtown eater y. He’s joined by partner Bob Kim and his wife Sun Lee. Together they plan to maintain the restaurant’s friendly appeal, while enhancing the menu and improving the decor. Banners is a well-known spot in Chilliwack’s downtown. And the friendly faces – who know many of their customers by name – will remain the same, Lee says. The menu, too, will maintain many of the favourites. Although, Bob Kim, a chef with 16 years experience, will be looking at ways he can introduce a few new flavours, or add some healthy alternatives.
James (right) and Sun Lee, along with partner Bob Kim, are the new owners of Banners Restaurant. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS
The goal, says Lee, is to keep the restaurant’s home-style appeal and “feel-athome atmosphere.” Not only should the meals be comforting (both to the palate and to the wallet), he insists, but the restaurant itself should be relaxed and inviting. “That kind of space is very rare.” And it should be that
way for the whole family. Banner’s goal is to provide a place where even young ones can enjoy an evening out in a restaurant that’s warm and accommodating. Lee admits he is new to the restaurant business. But his nine years as a local Realtor has given him a good sense of what Chilliwack likes. His
18 years of marketing experience, coupled with Kim’s knowledge of the food industry, meanwhile makes it a strong alliance. “We think it’s going to be a good combination.” Banners is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and desserts. It’s located at 45966 Yale Road.

Holmes said SIRC’s annual repor t to Parliament is “one of the checks and balances that Canadians look to in order to ensure government agencies .... are kept within their proper boundaries
and won’t discredit or embarrass us by failing to live up to the standards we expect.” “But unless you give them the resources to do the job in an effective way ... you really don’t get the results you want,” he said. In 2007, Harper gave
an apology and $10.5 million compensation to Maher Arar, a Canadian citizen detained by U.S. authorities in 2002 on suspicions of being a member of Al Qaeda and deported to his native Syria, even though the government there was known to use

Surprise deal brings Plevy to Chilliwack Eric J. Welsh, The Progress Chilliwack Chiefs general manager Harvey Smyl didn’t get the reputation he has by being timid. Gutsy trades are part of his repertoire, and he made his latest Thursday afternoon, finalizing a team-altering deal with the Merritt Centennials. Smyl shipped Derek Huisman to the Interior conference team. In return for the
20-year-old center, the Chiefs got 18-yearold Austin Plevy plus the playing rights to 20-year-old goaltender Keith Hamilton. “For us it was a matter of looking for more offence and at the same time trying to get younger,” Smyl explained. “We’re at our limit with the 20-year-olds, so this move is about trying to get equal production while getting that veteran situation sorted out.” Smyl is familiar with
a very high compete level,” Smyl said. “He will bring the effort and attitude we expect from a Chief.” The acquisition of Hamilton is interesting. The Kelowna native spent last season putting up woeful numbers with the woeful Victoria Royals (ex-Chilliwack Bruins) in the Western Hockey League. In 58 appearances he managed a 4.10 goals-against average and .880 save percentage. Hamilton played 33
Plevy’s abilities, having coached the Langley native from 2009-11 with the Langley Chiefs. The five-foot-nine and 165 pound forward came into his own as an offensive force last season, scoring 13 goals and adding 30 assists for 43 points in 58 games. He was also on Team West at the Canadian Junior Hockey League Prospects Game in November 2011. “Austin is a hard working and extremely skilled forward who has
games with Merritt in 2009-10, and his numbers weren’t much better. He might never show up in Chilliwack, but his potential arrival would create some drama between the pipes. Presumed starter Mitch Gillam, committed to Colgate for 201314, is expected back this season. But Smyl confirmed last year’s backup, Bryton Udy, will not return. It’s unlikely Hamilton is going to be happy in a
faceoff and defensive abilities. Plevy may well be able to match or exceed Huisman’s offensive output, but he’ll be hardpressed to do everything Huisman did. “Got to give up something good to get something good,” Smyl said. “I’ve coached Austin before, I recruited him to the BCHL and I think I know what he’s capable of. And I think he’s got potential to put up some really big numbers.”
backup role. “It’s a matter of trying to get depth,” said Smyl, who also holds the rights to Prince Albert goaltender Luke Siemens. “What we have is an asset, a chip that might help in the future.” As for Huisman, his contributions at both ends of the ice will be missed. The Smithers native did a fine job offensively in 2011-12 (30 goals and 65 points in 58 games), but Smyl made far more of his

Your home should look great when it goes on the market. When you are ready to list your home, go through each room with a critical eye. What should you look for? Start with the ceiling; look for any cracks or water stains, then inspect the condition of the paint and wallpaper. Make sure that the windows are clean and window treatments are attractive. All of the closets and storage spaces should be neat and organized (a cluttered closet looks smaller!). If the rooms seem cluttered with too much furniture, you can create a more spacious look by storing your “overflow”. A well-maintained house tends to sell much quicker than one where buyers must use a lot of imagination. The condition of your house will help to determine the selling price; the better the house looks, the better your chances of selling it for top dollar. Your Realtor can help you identify the repairs and cleaning that will increase your home’s marketability. Another factor to take into account when selling your home is that prospective buyers may react strongly to the way a home smells. Smoke, pet odors, strong disinfectants, insecticides, kitty litter, and french fries have all been known to dampen the enthusiasm of buyers who might otherwise respond positively to a house that would meet their needs. Be sure that your home passes the sniff test when it is on the market. Smoke and pets are the biggest offenders. Problem is, we become accustomed to the various “scents” in our own home and therefore can be offended to hear our home has a “pet” smell or other odors.

If you are selling, you will get the maximum exposure needed to market your home effectively, and if you are purchasing I will listen to your needs and help you find the perfect place to call home. I believe that the qualities of a good real estate agent are honesty, integrity and a strong work ethic. My name is Steve Mainse and I will take great pride in representing you.
If your home is on the market and feedback from potential buyers viewing your home suggests that they had an adverse reaction to any odors in your home, don’t despair, there are cleaning services which specialize in odor removal. They may suggest carpet steaming and other techniques to remove unpleasant odors. Even if buyers smoke themselves or have pets, they will react differently to the same odors lingering in a home they are considering. Finally, Realtors have all shared stories of having fingers or ankles nipped by furry creatures during a showing, or opened the front door to show a home, only to have a family pet scoot toward the nearby street. If you have pets and you are putting your house on the market, be sure to work out the showing arrangements carefully. It is important for Realtors to be able to communicate to their colleagues what to expect when they pass through your front door. It is rare for pets to pose significant problems, but big dogs can be menacing. Buyers may be allergic or even a little phobic about dogs or cats. It is difficult to get a buyer excited about your home if he or she is sneezing continuously or cowering in a corner in fear of Fido. If your Realtor knows there might be a problem, they can arrange ahead of time for you to do whatever is necessary to make sure that the showing goes smoothly.
For many people, their home is their biggest asset and their prized possession. When it comes time to buy that first home, or sell your current home and upgrade, why trust someone that doesn’t have intimate knowledge of the area and local market? Having been born and raised in Chilliwack, knowing the community and various neighbourhoods comes as second nature to me. With an extensive background in Personal and Commercial Insurance Sales and Marketing, I know what it takes to market products to the right people to achieve a quick sale and for top dollar. I love working with people and seeing my clients meet their Real Estate Goals is my main focus! When Buying or Selling Property, you need an honest, hardworking REALTOR that you can count on to be there for you and to devote the time to ensure that you are totally satisfied before, during and after your transaction. I am that REALTOR; and I welcome your calls.

Hello, my name is Corny Woelders, I am one of the proud owners of Landmark Realty Chilliwack. I am married and have two great kids. I grew up in Chilliwack and graduated from C.S.S.S. (a long time ago) and then moved to Abbotsford where I met my wife of 23 years. I predominately worked in the poultry and dairy industry and also ran our own Poultry Farm. I became a Realtor® a number of years ago and worked out of the Landmark Abbotsford office. However, I found myself selling a lot of homes in Chilliwack for friends and family, so when a Landmark franchise came available, my partners and I knew that Chilliwack was the place to go. Today’s low interest rates, plus low prices, plus high inventory, equals the perfect buyers market. So come on in and visit our office and I will help you with all your real estate needs.
