Canada Day Fireworks lights up the sky over the DND Grounds

T

he Canada Day Fireworks Committee will coordinate the annual Canada Day Fireworks display the evening of July 1st at the DND Grounds. Expecting to attract thousands of spectators, pyro-technicians will fire approximately 15 minutes worth of display explosives to musical accompaniment in honour of Canada’s birthday celebrations.

With the Funtastic Sports and Music Festival operating on Canada Day weekend, it is strongly encouraged that the public use the free shuttle buses, providing pick up and drop off from the Vernon Performing Arts Centre parking lot to the DND grounds, starting at 9 p.m.. This will reduce the traffic congestion and parking issues at the DND.

SUNDAY,

Vernon Fire & Rescue personnel will monitor weather and conditions to ensure public safety and preservation of the DND grounds and surrounding areas. The public is reminded to secure the safety of pets during the fireworks event. While there is an area of the DND where pets are permitted, no pets are permitted on the DND fields.

THE FUN STARTS AT

The Canada Day fireworks display is made possible through the annual commitment from the City of Vernon, Funtastic Sports Society, Vernon Fire & Rescue, volunteers from BX Swan Lake, Okanagan Landing and Coldstream Fire Departments, Department of National Defence, RCMP, Community Policing, BC Forestry Service and Heritage Canada.

JULY 1 9PM

Traffic, parking and crowd marshalling will be in effect. The public is encouraged to follow local news carefully in the days preceding the event for updates on access and anticipated start time, or check www.vernon.ca.

Following the fireworks show at the A&W Funtastic stage will be the iconic Canadian band- Trooper! We would like to acknowledge the support of the Department of Canadian Heritage.

TURN IT LOUD!

O

riginally formed by Brian MacLeod and Ab Bryant as a sort of 'side project' from Chilliwack, the group was rounded out by drummer Bernie Aubin and Vernon`s own Darby Mills, one of the west coast's hottest new singers. Their impact was immediate even before they'd landed a record deal, quickly earning the reputation as one of the west coast's most energetic and magnetic live groups. The band's chemistry with the crowds was rivalled by few and they soon became one of the hottest commodities in Canadian rock, beginning with their first show in hometown Vancouver backing up Blackmore's Rainbow in 1979.

with Katrina Lawrence

I

n 1982, the group released TURN IT LOUD on the independent Solid Gold Records. Charged with emotions, MacLeod's guitars rang predominant, almost a friendly battle with Mills' immediately signature voice. With Bryant and Aubin serving a tight powerful backbeat, the lead-off title-track grabbed you and refused to let go, and would soon find its place in rock history as one of rock's greatest anthems of all time. The band would go on to double platinum status, and stayed on top of the charts for six straight weeks.

M

ills was heralded as having one of the most powerful set of pipes in the business. Her growl was matched only by her purr, and would go on to lead the charge in their energized live show. "Don't It Make Ya Feel" turned the FM stations upside down, as did the title track, the killer "Breakin' Down" (about one person's handling personal problems via suicide), "People" and the power ballad "Winnin'". Word of the band's raucous, charged show spread and by the time TURN IT LOUD turned platinum just a few short months later, the band had already toured most of the continent. The debut would go on to sell over a quarter-million copies in Canada alone and be

certified double platinum, making it one of the most successful debut albums by a Canadian group ever.

I

n 2001 the band was thrilled to announce the addition of Tony Dellacroce as their new guitarist. Originally from Ontario but now living on the West Coast, he's toured with Jerry Doucette and Lee Aaron and gained a reputation cross-country as one of Canada's brightest young stars. They soon added Alfie Galpin to the mix, another veteran of the axe wars. Together they form of one of the scene's deadliest one-two punch on guitar.

T

he band is still packing the houses and kicking ass like no others. A greatest hits package was finally released to the delight of classic rock fans in 2002. The only compilation currently available to span all 3 records, THE COMPLETE GREATEST HITS is a multi-media event - 14 killer tracks that helped shape Canadian rock, as well as the videos for "Just One More Time" and "Don't It Make Ya Feel". The Headpins are the head instructors in Kick Ass Rock 101 - and school is in session. Make sure you catch them when they turn it loud on Friday night Funtastic this year!

Following three years of convalescence from major surgery in 2000, Shields career continues and his dream remains, to entertain with music. The spotlight still shines brightly and it will shine on Kenny Shields and Streetheart on Friday night at Funtastic.

W

hen one speaks of rock music and western Canada in the same sentence, there is a good chance that Kenny Shields may be the subject of that sentence. His passion for music and love of the spotlight emerged at the age of six when he entered an amateur talent show, and smoked the competition. Upon graduation from secondary school, he moved to Saskatoon and joined that city’s premiere band – Witness Incorporated – and the professional spotlight first fell upon him. Shields’ lifelong dream started to crystalize: to entertain with music. The band would do just that, playing to dedicated audiences across western Canada. They relocated to Toronto in 1967 and won over the dubious patrons of the Yorkville clubs and The Rockpile. They opened for Cream, toured with Roy Orbison, and issued five singles including "I’ll Forget Her Tomorrow", "Jezebel" and "Harlem Lady." In 1970 Shields was critically injured in an automobile accident that sidetracked him from music for several years. He made one attempt at a comeback with the Regina-based band called Mudd, but realized that although his dream was still intact, he was not yet ready to resume the touring life. After a further period of convalescence, Shields moved to Winnipeg to join another Saskatchewan band entitled Wascana, which included in its ranks Spider Sinnaeve, Daryl Gutheil, and ex-Witness drummer Craig Kaleal. The voice was re-energized, the stamina returned, the band gelled, and after relocating to Saskatoon, they became Witness again. While on the Alberta touring circuit, Shields struck up a friendship with the members of The Great Canadian River Race, and in 1976 when Witness finished its run, Shields moved back to Regina in the company of Paul Dean and Matt Frenette. With Spider and Daryl , the five formed the quintessential prairie powerhouse band of the late 1970s and early 1980s - Streetheart.

At their best in a live setting, Streetheart was labelled Canada’s #1 touring band for many years running. They played bars, clubs and arenas from coast to coast sharing the stage with such acts as Chilliwack, Rush, Harlequin, Styx, Max Webster, AC/DC, and April Wine. Streetheart recorded a total of six studio albums and one double live album. They topped the Canadian charts with a non-stop string of hits including "Action", "Hollywood", "Under My Thumb", "Look In Your Eyes", "What Kind of Love Is This", "One More Time" and "Snow White" – all tunes that remain standards on radio playlists to this day. Along the way they earned a total of six gold albums, four platinum albums, a gold single, two Ampex Golden Reel awards, a Music Express Award , a peoples' choice voted most popular Canadian act and a Juno. And in September 2003, as befits a national institution, Kenny Shields and Streetheart were inducted into the Western Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

Funtastic - Building a Better Community Through Sport Funtastic Slo-Pitch Tournament and Music Festival, is the Funtastic Sports Society’s sole fundraiser. All proceeds from the event are dedicated towards the improvement of sports and recreation for all in our community. We thank you for your continued support of Funtastic and hope you enjoy your weekend.

Funtastic Community Grant Program Introduced in 2009, the Funtastic Community Grant was established as a way to celebrate Funtastic 25th Anniversary. Since then, the Funtastic Sports Society has distributed $100,000 to 24 local organizations to support sport and recreation in our community. Overall, since 1985, Funtastic has given $1.4 million to support community sport and recreation initiatives. Once the Funtastic Community Grant program was in place, the society is fortunate to have community leaders to participate on a selection panel to review applications. In 2012, the panel, which included Selection Committee Chair and Funtastic Treasurer - Diana Mahortoff, Funtastic VP Sandra Simeo and Funtastic Directors Akbal Mund, Darcy Sochan and Michelle Robertson, received 18 applications requesting funds of more than $124,000.

Funtastic in Kandahar

No matter where you go, Tim Horton’s is a Canadian icon. Even in Kandahar, Afghanistan, the familiar logo can be found, and that’s as reassuring to Canadians as the coffee itself. But great Canadian coffee isn’t the only Canadian institution that’s appeared in the sand dunes of Kandahar. Last year, the familiar gold, black and red t-shirt – known by most as the Funtastic volunteer t-shirt – made its debut, thanks to long-time Funtastic participant Dan MacLeod. That shirt, along with Dan, began its journey to Kandahar just as Funtastic was wrapping up last year. While most said their farewells and prepared for a six-, eight- or even 10-hour drive to get home, Dan boarded a plane for a 14-hour flight to Afghanistan. With t-shirtt in hand, he travelled a whopping 10,549 km – from the ball fields at the DND Grounds to o the heat of Kandahar (thank heavens for Tim m Horton’s Iced Capps!)

Proud Sponsor of

The t-shirt was a gift from Gary and d Donna Rauch, the former owners of Dutch’ss Campground. Dan and his team have stayed d at Dutch’s for the last 13 years while playing g in Funtastic. They still keep in touch, and still ill see each other every year as Gary volunteers rs with the Vernon Lions and serves beer in the he BudLight gardens.

“We have seen the Funtastic logo across oss western Canada and even as far away as New Mexico, but w Mex exiico b utt I think Kandahar is the farthest destination for a Funtastic t-shirt,” said Brett Kirkpatrick, Funtastic president. Dan and his team are at Funtastic 2012 for their 14th year and are once again staying at Dutch’s Campground. Let’s hope this year Dan can stay for the entire weekend and enjoy one more Canadian icon – Trooper – on Canada Day.

Dried fruit and nuts are convenient grab-and-go snacks! They are semi-perishable and can be kept in your cupboard for a year when bought fresh. I keep the bulk of my dried fruits, nuts, and seeds in my freezer and transfer them to my cupboard when I need them. That way, I’m not always having to dig around in my freezer and my cupboard stays well stocked for the year. Breakfast is such an important meal. It truly sets the course for one’s day. Eating a nutritious breakfast isn’t always easy. We sometimes don’t leave enough time in the morning to eat properly. But a few tricks for making the right choices are:

HAPPY DAYS STORE

• Have your oats set out the night before with a good choice of dried fruit and nuts added to them for nutrition and taste. Then, in the morning, you just add water and simmer for 15 minutes or so. Pack it in a thermos or enjoy right away with a dollop of yogurt on top. • Believe it or not, if you soak your oats and fixings overnight you retain more nutrition and they cook faster! Soaking your nuts and seeds helps to remove the enzyme inhibitor that prevents nuts and seeds from sprouting prematurely. This makes them easier to digest. • Another quick breakfast idea is a smoothie! I especially love these in the summer months. Pack in some fresh berries, about twelve soaked almonds (soaked overnight in just enough water to cover them), a tablespoon of hemp seeds, half a frozen banana (I freeze my bananas in halves once they turn brown), a touch of vanilla, some yogurt, and a bit of orange juice. Blend and enjoy!

It is so easy to forget about eating healthy when you’re in a hurry. Rushing out the door in the morning or grabbing something ‘convenient’ at lunch time, rather than planning for healthy choices, is common in our fast paced world. There’s that tricky word... ‘planning’. Easier said than done, I know!

These simple planned breakfasts make running out the door nutritious and cheap! Cheap because you skip the bagel or muffin you usually grab from your favorite coffee joint. Plus, you feel satiated and ready for the day rather than sluggish and yucky from no breakfast or one packed with too much sugar and hydrogenated oils.

Thank you to everyone, especially the volunteers who make Funtastic what it is today! The Funtastic experience started 27 years ago in Vernon on August 15, 1985 with 55 teams. Since then, the spirit and vision has grown and spread throughout the region. Today the Funtastic slo-pitch tournament is proud to host 300 teams, more than 4,500 players from two countries, and is recognized as Canada’s largest slo-pitch tournament. Presenting their own unique culture of Funtastic, our neighbouring communities of Armstrong and Enderby host independently run events that share the Funtastic brand. The same love for sports and recreation with the mandate of giving back to the community is also shared by these host communities. Taking a break from the tournament is Lumby which was the first satellite community to host a Funtastic event in 1989. Its popularity saw registration reach as high as 48 teams. The money generated continues to support local students with a scholarship fund that was

created with the North Okanagan Community Foundation to support Lumby students. Armstrong joined Funtastic next, and will celebrate its twentieth anniversary this year. At their first event in 1992, Armstrong hosted 24 teams - today their numbers have grown to 40 teams. Armstrong’s community has seen the financial benefits first hand, which have gone towards their new arena, spray park and curling scraper. Teams book their campsites a year in advance and look at Armstrong Funtastic as a family reunion as much as a ball tournament. Enderby joined the Funtastic team roster in 1999, and has grown from 24 to 32 teams. The proceeds of Enderby Funtastic have gone to improve and upgrade Legionnaire’s field, rebuild backstops, replace home-run netting and washrooms at Riverside Park. In addition, money raised has gone to support Enderby Minor Soccer and Baseball.

In all communities, Funtastic is one of the highlights of the summer in the north Okanagan- a fun-filled weekend of good sportsmanship and a great social event with friends and families.

Strong lead and backup vocals, precise harmonies, solid rhythms and warm, driving bottom end are all part of the formula. Throw in some world-class guitar work and the results are sublime. MACE was a fixture at several local and valley nightclubs throughout the 80s and was also the most called-upon band to rock local dance functions. MACE was the original Funtastic band and eventually took their act on the road, appearing throughout the province under the Sam

9:00 PM

Feldman stable of bands. Several original compositions were featured regularly in the act and recording plans were only halted by a personnel change in 1984. The band resurfaced with a new drummer and keyboard player and underwent a few reformations throughout the 80s and 90s, the most successful being O.T.C and Petty Crimes. Today’s lineup includes original members Jackson MACE ... lead vocals/guitar, Jeff Gamble ... lead guitar/vocals, and Gary Moore ... bass guitar/vocals. Added to the mix on drums/vocals is former Starship and Labels member Don Redgwell. The latest version has all the same qualities that led to all that initial and memorable success. MACE’S original byline was and is “The Joy of Rock”! Never has this been more true! Check out MACE at Funtastic on Saturday night.

Following the death of both his father and mother, Bennie and Nikki Grammatico — he a trumpeter and bandleader, she a singer for his Big Band — Gramm fulfilled a lifelong wish of his parents that their three musical sons might someday make their music together. Gramm and his brothers, Ben and Richard, formed the current lineup of the Lou Gramm Band (also known as "LGB"). First rising to prominence as the frontman for platinum-selling hard rock combo Foreigner, Lou Gramm later mounted a successful solo career, cracking the Top Five in 1987 with "Midnight Blue." Born in Rochester, NY on May 2, 1950, Lou Gramm first surfaced as the drummer with the band Black Sheep, assuming lead vocal duties prior to recording the group's self-titled 1975 Capitol debut; although neither the album nor its follow-up Encouraging Words earned much mainstream notice, they did capture the attention of journeyman guitarist Mick Jones, best known for his stint with a latterday incarnation of Spooky Tooth. Jones soon tapped Lou Gramm to front his new group Foreigner, and together

they began writing songs, co-authoring the smash "Cold as Ice" from their best-selling 1977 eponymous debut LP. Lou Gramm's powerfully distinctive vocals were inescapable in the years to follow as Foreigner reeled off an impressive series of pop radio hits including "Hot Blooded," "Double Vision," "Urgent," and "Waiting for a Girl Like You," culminating in 1984's chart-topping power ballad "I Want to Know What Love Is." With Foreigner on hiatus, Lou Gramm made his solo debut in 1987 with Ready or Not, scoring a major hit with "Midnight Blue" The Lou Gramm band has been touring the U.S., Canada, and Mexico steadily since January 2004, as well as occasional dates off the continent, and the touring continues. Lou, Ben, with friends Don Mancuso and Andy Knoll, play a retrospective of Gramm's work with Foreigner, his solo material, plus a few personal favorites of their own. In 2012, Lou Gramm hits the Funtastic stage on Saturday night with his band, performing many of his old Foreigner hits, with his voice back to full strength and continuing to improve.

SUNDAY BANDS Energetic. Powerful. Refreshing. And sometimes a guilty pleasure. 7:00 PM

Onlookers have used words such as these to describe this young, female-fronted power-quintet. Walls of loud, distorted punk-rock fury, high-energy live stage show, and ... Top 40 pop hits? Taking songs by such artists as Rihanna, P!NK, Katy Perry and Lady GaGa, and Frankensteining them into a strange brew of catchy and danceable hard rock anthems. It sounds odd, but it works. Formed from other bands and projects from around BC, this valley five-some has been getting double-takes and "did they just do what I thought they did?" reactions since the summer of 2011. Smoothing out the edges of WE ARE LIVE! LIVE! on lead vocals is sexy former Vancouver solo artist turned Vernonite front-woman and band cheerleader Sasha Hall. In the role of lead guitarist and head of stage shenanigans is Williams Lake hardcore-metalhead Stephen (Steve Dave) Davies, formerly of the Merritt hardcore band, Just Kuz. On the other side of the stage is former KookShow and Midnight Famous vocal and rhythm section, Merritt punk rockers Jared Jackson and Brandon Fauteux, now providing guitar and bass respectively. And finally, providing groove and flailing on the drum throne (as well as acting band manager) is Kelowna cover-band veteran and stage/studio drummer and vocalist Don "The Anymal" Mutter, member of Okanagan fan-favorites The Young'uns and ORiO. Five members bringing experience and talent to the table that defies their age, and backs it up live on stage for a show that needs to be seen to be believed. Reviving the cover-band scene again with a refreshing

sense of energy, class, talent and showing everybody how easy it is to watch LIVE MUSIC and have a crazy good time! Watch for them on Sunday night, and touring around BC and Albertait's going to be a crazy year!

Good luck to all participants

Aerosmith is one of rock and roll history's most recognized, idolized, and also most covered bands. The music of Aerosmith is so well known that if you were to say aloud the title of an Aerosmith hit, people in close proximity would start to sing it. Aerosmith Rocks tribute band is Canada's newest offering to Aerosmith fans from around the world. This tribute band covers over 3 decades of the best of Aerosmith's top selling records and radio singles. An awesome visual and audio recreation of the original.

8:00 PM

It’s not common when a band can play Aerosmith material and make us feel like we're hearing it for the very first time again. Aerosmith Rocks has produced something that people will actually take seriously, accomplishing the identity and sound of the living legend known as AEROSMITH!! Let's start with vocals. Danny Deane has what we need from the lead singer of an Aerosmith tribute - the crisp high end, the sustain, the "yeh-yeh-yehyeh", and most importantly, that neck-tickling Steve Tyler presence that makes Aerosmith fans feel right at home.

Phone: (250) 545-7264 Fax: (250) 542-5116 3109 32nd Ave., Vernon, BC V1T 2M2

Next we have Andrew Laing and Dan Parker picking up their axes in the name of Joe Perry and Brad Whitford. Although Aerosmith is more widely known for their vocals, you would be surprised at how easily a guitar player can make or break their signature sound. The intro riff to Aerosmith Rocks' cover of "Walk this Way" is refreshingly reminiscent of the original version, in all of tone, style, and bad-ass attitude. Come solo time, fans are shocked at how well all of Perry's mysterious little licks are captured.

APPEARING on the A&W Funtastic stage Sunday, July 1st.

www.vernonmorningstar.com It goes like this: two million records, a couple dozen hits, sold-out coliseums across Canada, a Juno Award for Band of the Year. The Vancouver Sun called them "Canadian rock heroes of the first order ... the best performing band in Canada." If you need reminding, this was Trooper a decade or so ago. And what made them what they were then is still there now: great performances and great pop songwriting.

From the Funtastic anthem- "We're Here for a Good Time (Not a Long Time)" to "Raise a Little Hell", "The Boys in the Bright White Sportscar", "Two For the Show", "Pretty Lady" "Good Ol' General Hand Grenade", "Round, Round We Go", "Santa Maria", "Janine" - just a few of the Trooper hits that, according to writer Ryan Sparks, have woven their way into the fabric of this country like no other bands have been able to do. Tune into any radio station from Vancouver to St John's and you're bound to encounter one of their dozen hit radio anthems that are still featured in heavy rotation to this day.

Incredibly, more than one out of every forty Canadians owns a copy of Trooper's 6X Platinum album; "Hot Shots". The band has performed thousands of shows in virtually every city and town across Canada and are the first Canadian band to successfully tour from coast to coast in their home country. In America, they've backed up a who's who of Rock including; Aerosmith, BTO, AC/DC, Steppenwolf, Alice Cooper, ZZ Top, Fleetwood Mac, Jeff Beck, REO, Styx, and many others. In 1990 Trooper returned to the airwaves with the new album; "The Last of the Gypsies". The welcome afforded them by fans, radio and critics was unqualified. The Toronto Star's Craig MacInnis pronounced Gypsies "a wonderful album, imbued with the humor and verve that only come from slowly digging oneself out of adversity." The album scored Gold-plus sales and new radio hits. Their cross-Canada tour with Helix and Brighton Rock was the most successful Canadian tour of the summer. The video for the hit "Boy With A Beat" received extensive play on Much Music as did a previously unreleased 1980 concert film. In 1991 Trooper released their tenth album. The anthemic "American Dream" landed at the top of the charts, as did the heartfelt "Kids in Love". "Ten" was a hit! In early 1995, two vintage Trooper albums were released, for the first time, on CD in Japan. By the end of 1996, MCA Records had decided to acknowledge the band's newfound popularity by re-releasing four more of the groups albums on CD. "Hot Shots" remains MCA's best-selling catalog title. In 1996 & '97, Trooper toured relentlessly, continuing to sell out night clubs, universities and concerts, from Victoria to St. Johns. In 1998 Ra and Brian worked on the Compilation Album and gathered together a large collection of Trooper memorabilia that was requested by the National Library of Canada. These items will remain carefully preserved in climate controlled archives. 1997 and '98 saw Trooper attaining Legendary status across Canada - performing at, among other things, the televised 1997 Grey Cup game, the televised '98 West Coast Music Awards and an appearance on the Canadian cult hit TV show: "This Hour Has 22 Minutes" New Years Eve Special. The year 2000 marked the band's 25th anniversary as top performers in the Canadian music industry. With a packed house at Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom, they reunited original group members with the Trooper of today for one incredible and memorable night of celebration. As Trooper continue to sell out shows, large and small, across the country, they often find fans from three different generations in the audience, proving that the band remains ageless. Trooper has become a Canadian legend - "Canada's number one party band". The perfect band to celebrate Canada Day! They perform their huge collection of hits at Funtastic on Sunday with the vitality and sense of humor that has served them well on their steady march through the hills and valleys of Rock and Roll.

32 Teams | 4 Days | 60’s Theme Funtastic Enderby has been a major contributor to the recreation amenities and services that we as a community have come to enjoy, since 1998, the first year the ball tournament was held in Enderby Some of the projects that Enderby Funtastic has taken part in over the years include: • a childrens play area at riverside ball park • fencing and netting of diamond 1 • refurbishing of backstops • the rebuilding of diamond 4 • the purchase of a rotovater/aerator for the grounds crew to use on the ball diamond infield maintenance • a major contributor to the Enderby area F parks plan • continued support for many local teams who participate in championship playoffs in out of the area locations These are just a few of the projects that Enderby Funtastic has participated over the years. The directors of Enderby Funtastic want to firstly recognize the Enderby Lions Club for faithfully supporting us for 14 years. It was through their participation in Funtastic that they were inspired to build some kind of a facility with a roof, for functions such as this. Thus the Gazebo which was built in 2003, a great asset to the community which is used by many for various functions. THANK YOU ENDERBY LIONS CLUB. We also would like to thank the many local businesses and citizens for their continued support of our July long weekend event.
